Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.

Southeast Asia has a real grip on me. From the very first time I went there, it was a fulfillment of my childhood fantasies of the way travel should be.

I wanted adventures. I wanted to go up the Nung river to the heart of darkness in Cambodia . I wanted to ride out into a desert on camelback, sand and dunes in every direction, eat whole roasted lamb with my fingers. I wanted to kick snow off my boots in a Mafiya nightclub in Russia. I wanted to play with automatic weapons in Phnom Penh, recapture the past in a small oyster village in France, step into a seedy neon-lit pulqueria in rural Mexico. I wanted to run roadblocks in the middle of the night, blowing past angry militia with a handful of hurled Marlboro packs, experience fear, excitement, wonder.   I wanted kicks – the kind of melodramatic thrills and chills I’d yearned for since childhood, the kind of adventure I’d found as a little boy in the pages of my Tintin comic books. I wanted to see the world – and I wanted the world to be just like the movies.

Without experimentation, a willingness to ask questions and try new things, we shall surely become static, repetitive, and moribund.

If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.

Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.

With spring break just around the corner, it's about time to pack up your suitcase and head off on an adventure. If you're anything like me, half the fun of traveling is curating your Instagram. I adore editing my photos and pairing them with beautiful words. I like to find a caption that captures the spirit of the photo and what I was thinking about as I took it. And, as a reader, I frequently use quotes from books along with my Instagram posts. When I use a line from literature in context of my photos, I find it lends a new perspective to both the quote and the photo.

Of course, travel is a major theme in books. Literature is filled with quests and adventures aplenty, and there's no better travel agent than your local library. All you have to do is open a book, and there is always a journey waiting for you. Literature in itself is inherently a way to travel. And with both, you're constantly making discoveries about yourself and your inner world.

I love these, especially 18 and 31. Also ha ha to number 16. I always think of Uncle Traveling Matt's song from Fraggle Rock as inspirational for travelers. "Every sunrise shows me more and more/ So much to explore/ Come and follow me", etc.

We got this traveling quote from our friend JD of EarthXplorer. Well said JD! There is no better piece of advice. I wish my niece and nephews listened to me when I told them this.

Whenever I read this quotation on travel, I always think of the singer Dido. Do you know that song ? “I’ve still got sand in my shoes and I can’t shake the thought of you.” When traveling to islands and beaches , this one always pops into my mind.

Over the years we have had many people ask us, “how did we have the courage to do what we do.” Truthfully, we never thought too much about what could go wrong.

When we knew we wanted to cycle Africa or climb a mountain, we didn’t focus on what could go wrong, instead, we focused on the excitement and challenges ahead. So we recommend using this travel quote to help you overcome the “what ifs in life.”

Oh, I love this! It’s one thing to read a quote, but having an image attached really helps you to FEEL the quote. My favorite is the one about getting “lost in the right direction.” I feel that way very often 🙂

Paul Heller has been a lifelong avid traveler and language learner and teacher, Even as a child, he told Santa Claus that he wanted to visit all the children worldwide. At seven years old, Paul wanted to retire to Mexico. At eight, he memorized the name, capital, location, and some facts about every country worldwide. At twelve, he found a book "Lonely Planet: Southeast Asia on a Shoestring" and started developing his own itinerary for a future round-the-world trip. He remained obsessed with travel; after getting a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California and working as an administrator, He spent his vacations going to different countries around the globe studying language, touring, and volunteering. In 1994, he quit his job and lived in Russia as a volunteer English instructor. He discovered that he loved teaching languages. In 2004, he decided to make a living out of his travels and founded a community of people who love to travel just like him. He developed 5 three-hour classes about living and traveling long-term worldwide which he taught in over 50 adult education programs throughout the US. After his parents passed, he realized his dream of traveling around the world; cruising and touring some of the most remote places like the North Atlantic, Patagonia, and Oceania; and learning new languages (he knows Spanish, Italian, French, and Russian). Paul encourages everyone to learn foreign languages. He knows that it can be frustrating and slow but that anyone can learn a language if they put in the work and, most importantly, learning a language is well worth the time and effort because it opens up a whole new set of people, ideas, and cultures. He is currently spending the next chapter of his life in Mérida, México. Rising costs on flights: When to book, and what to expect

TSA Administrator David Pekoske discusses air travel demand, flight disruptions, his experience going through TSA and firearm detections at checkpoints.

Airfare prices are expected to rise as soon as next month as travelers finalize summer plans, according to travel app Hopper. However, they will reach their peak by the end of May.

Hopper lead economist Hayley Berg reported on Tuesday that domestic round trip fares in April will average $290, which is slightly lower than last April. However, at their peak, around the end of May and early June, prices will average $315 per round-trip domestic ticket.

Those prices will fall back to an average of $264 per round trip ticket in the shoulder season, according to Berg. Shoulder season is an industry term for the off travel season. In the fall, it usually spans between September and October.

In terms of international travel, airfare has continued to improve "following two years of bloated prices due to quickly recovering demand, high fuel prices and supply constraints."

The cost of flying to most regions around the world dropped compared with last year, aside from Canada. 

However, fares remain higher than pre-pandemic levels "as higher fuel prices persist and airlines continue to rebuild capacity to many regions," Berg said.

Compared with pre-pandemic times, flights to Canada are 32% higher. Meanwhile, flights for Europe and Asia are up 10% and 44%, respectively. 

However, even with the higher prices, Berg noted that Asia still remains top of mind for American travelers, specifically Osaka, Japan, and Seoul, South Korea. Fares for such destinations are over $1,300 per round-trip ticket on average. 

For Seoul, Hopper said a round trip ticket sitting at $1,463 is considered a "good deal."

Disruption rates:

Berg warned that travelers should also expect disruption rates to increase as peak travel months like June, July and August approach. For instance, last summer, delay rates jumped 25% between March and July.
