It is unsure if this actually includes food and a drink at each stop. Otherwise it is a very pricey boat ride that can be substituted with a free monorail ride.

We really enjoyed this cruise today. We had a chance to meet other DVC members and enjoyed the drinks and food. We would have liked an option to have beer or wine instead of the specialty drinks, but it's not designed this way. The time was well spaced and relaxing , and our boat driver was very nice and personable. We were greeted by friendly cast members at each resort.

Seeking to indulge your inner gourmand and set sail at the same time? Culinary and wine enthusiasts will likely love that two luxury cruise lines — Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Atlas Ocean Voyages — have just announced new epicurean delights at sea.

Let’s look at what we know so far. Regent Seven Seas has introduced “ Epicurean Perfection” while Atlas ( see photo above by Atlas Ocean Voyages ) has rolled out a sneak peek at its new “ Epicurean Expeditions .” For 2023 and beyond, cruisers have some fantastic new options for gourmet cruises.

Regent Seven Seas: Epicurean Perfection

“Nothing enhances travel like cuisine,” believes  Andrea DeMarco , president and CEO, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, in talking about the new Epicurean Perfection ” programming.

The new concept features multiple culinary threads — everything from exquisite cuisine in up to five specialty restaurants to immersive shoreside excursions, private fine wine and spirit tasting sessions, and hands-on cooking classes within the line’s state-of-the-art Culinary Arts Kitchen .

Guests can expect other demonstrations, talks, presentations and more. In fact, l ook for this new program to go beyond traditional culinary offerings found at sea. Most notable? The line is introducing 11 new Epicurean Spotlight Voyages.

New Epicurean Spotlight Voyages

We’d definitely encourage foodies and wine aficionados to check out these Epicurean Spotlight Voyages for 2023, 2024 and 2025. As the first of several culinary initiatives to be launched this year, they’ll deliver incomparable experiences with famous chefs, vintners and sommeliers.

You’ll find these on select voyages of Seve n Seas Grandeur,   Seven Seas Splendor ,  Seven Seas Explorer, Seven Seas Mariner  and  Seven Seas Voyager.  Since this news was just released, we don’t have the full picture, but below are some highlights. Also, here’s the RSSC press release.

Epicurean Cruises: 2023 Alaska

In Alaska this summer, two savory Epicurean Spotlight Voyages are planned. Chef Mark Bittman and RSSC’s Executive Culinary Director Wolfgang Maier  will join Seven Seas Explorer’s June 21, 2023 sailing   from Seward, AK, to Vancouver, B.C.

During another gastronomic voyage between those two ports on August 30, 2023 , guests will hear from Chef Vincent Guerithault , a James Beard award winner. He’ll share his secrets and recipes from his award-winning restaurant Vincent on Camelback, in P hoenix, AZ.

Both cruises are seven-night voyages with port calls at Sitka, Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. The ship will also cruise to the Hubbard Glacier and spend a day at sea.

After two-for-one discounts have been applied, starting fares at press time were $6,999 per person, double occupancy, for the August 30 voyage and $7,399 for the June 21 departure; pricing is subject to change.

Contact your travel advisor for booking and to learn about any discounts or promotions.

Epicurean Spotlight Voyages: 2023 Mediterranean

If travelers prefer a Mediterranean culinary experience, on   August 14, 2023 , they can board Seven Seas Mariner in Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy , for an Epicurean Spotlight Voyage to Fusina (Venice), Italy.

Following in his late father Michel Roux’s culinary path, Chef Alain Roux leads the  Waterside Inn restaurant, holder of three Michelin stars for 38 years. That’s the longest of any restaurant in the world outside France.  During this gastronomic voyage, Chef Roux will offer cooking demonstrations and special dishes.

He’ll be joined by Chef Michael Nizzero , chef instructor at the Waterside Inn, who also will share insight. Guests will learn about the daily operations of running a Michelin-star restaurant.

At press time, prices for this August 14 voyage started at $12,599 per person, double occupancy; pricing is subject to change. Given Chef Roux’s reputation within culinary circles, this is one Epicurean Spotlight Voyage that is likely to book up quickly. So, talk with a  professional travel advisor today if you’re interested.

Master Sommelier Doug Frost

Separately,  Seven Seas Splendor will operate a 12-night Epicurean Spotlight on Wine sailing with Master Sommelier Doug Frost on October 8, 2023 . The voyage will sail from Tarragona (Barcelona) to Fusina (Venice). Guests will have the opportunity to learn from a true expert in wine.

Frost’s claim to fame? Interestingly, he’s one of only four people globally to simultaneously hold the Master of Wine and Master Sommelier titles. Frost will host several events on board and ashore; those will include a tasting class, informative presentations, and escorted tours.

Venturing ashore with Frost, guests who are die-hard wine enthusiasts will savor high-quality wine tastings in Tuscany, Italy; Aix-en-Provence, France; and Koper, Slovenia.

Interested? Pricing at press time started at $14,099 per person, double occupancy. A personal travel planner can help sort out all the details and discuss any discounts or promotions.

For example, in one recent blog, The Meandering Traveler profiled Jamie Roach , a personal travel planner for Pavlus Travel .

2024 Epicurean Cruises with a Wine Spotlight

Several 2024 Epicurean Spotlight on Wine sailings are also planned; travelers will enjoy onboard presentations, and tours and tastings ashore:

  • Winemaker Joe Caldwell of Caldwell Vineyard in Napa Valley, CA, will sail aboard Seven Seas Voyager between Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro o n March 9, 2024.
  • Winemakers and proprietors Jack and Ann Seifrick of CAST Wines in Sonoma, CA, will sail on a Seven Seas Splendor voyage between Barcelona and Civitavecchia (Rome) on April 14, 2024 .
  • Ed and Adam Sbragia of the Sbragia Family Vineyards  will mix and mingle with guests during a Seven Seas Voyager sailing that departs May 8, 2024. This epicurean journey begins in Istanbul, Turkey, and ends in Athens (Piraeus), Greece.

Epicurean or Wine Cruises with a Unique Twist

On August 14, 2024 , Los Angeles-based Chef Tommaso Barletta and actor and comedian John O’Hurley  will sail on Regent Seven Seas’ new Seven Seas Grandeur .  The 10-night culinary-focused cruise will sail from Piraeus, Greece, to Barcelona, Spain.

Together Chef Barletta and O’Hurley will host everything from cooking demonstrations to escorted tours. An added treat? Guests will have the opportunity to watch a special performance of O’Hurley’s one-man show, “A Man With Standards.”

Separately, on March 31, 2025 , the line will host an Epicurean Spotlight with ZAP: Zinfandel Advocates and Producers,  on Seven Seas Explorer’s roundtrip cruise from Tokyo, Japan. California-based ZAP is a members-only organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating all things Zinfandel.

That club consists of winemakers, preservationists and Zinfandel enthusiasts. Look for members to host special tastings and educational master classes.

Use the “date links”provided above to learn more about these specific voyages. We’d suggest chatting with a skilled personal travel planner who can discuss any current deals and discounted contract air tickets.

More on Gastronomy and Wine

It’s important to note that Regent Seven Seas has also introduced several other Epicurean Spotlight Voyages. All feature renowned guest chefs and vintners. This blog has provided a sampling of the voyages above, but for more options, check out this page on the line’s website.

Beyond those voyages, the line’s Epicurean Perfection experience offers other culinary elements too. Among them are these:

  • “ Unrivaled Cuisine ” that goes beyond the inclusions of most specialty restaurants on any luxury or premium cruise brand. Onboard a Regent Seven Seas ship, special tastings, deck-top regional barbecues and cooking classes are among the ingredients for memorable culinary experiences.
  • Epicurean Explorations, which will take guests shoreside to explore historic markets, sample beverages, observe traditional cooking methods and taste local specialties.
  • Epicurean Explorer Tours, which will take cruisers to a world-class restaurant, ancient market or other culinary spot. Then, guests will r eturn to the ship to participate in Culinary Arts Kitchen classes (see photo below) on Seven Seas Grandeur, Seven Seas Splendor , and Seven Seas Explorer.

Culinary Arts Kitchen on Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Image provided by Regent Seven Seas Cruises,

  • Wine & Spirits Tours, allowing guests to taste beverages produced in the region being visited — cascading vineyards in France or a distillery in Ireland.
  • Food & Wine Tours, which are conducted by culinary professionals in partnership with “Food & Wine Trails.”
  • Local Flavors Tours, giving guests a chance to dine authentically in the spots the locals love.
  • Epicurean Land Programs, which are pre- and post-cruise land trips that dive deeper into a region or destination, with a focus on unique flavors and culinary heritage.

For more information, visit the Regent Seven Seas Cruises website.  And be sure to chat with a  personal travel planner who can answer your questions and help you find the perfect epicurean adventure.

Atlas Ocean Voyages: Epicurean Expeditions

Also on the gourmet dining front, small-ship Atlas Ocean Voyages  just announced new Epicurean Expeditions , which will run from April through October 2023.

While t he luxury expedition line’s 198-passenger World Traveller and sister World Navigator visit such remote, polar destinations as Antarctica and the Arctic, now they’ll also offer culinary-focused sailings to iconic, marquee European ports.

“We specialize in expeditions that provide insights, indulge the senses, and inspire discussion among like-minded travelers,” says James Rodriguez , the line’s president and CEO. “With the addition of our new Epicurean Expeditions ,  discerning explorers can now truly immerse themselves in the culinary culture of European ports, while cruising aboard a luxury yacht.”

Epicurean Cruises: Gastronomic Guests

What can you expect if you sail? Look for the new sailings to feature onboard enrichment by a Gastronomic Guest, who might be a renowned chef from a Michelin-starred venue or a local culinary rock star. In addition, all voyages will offer regional wine tastings from a  Visiting Vintner.

Restaurant menus will highlight the Gastronomic Guest’s signature dishes, and the guest chefs will also conduct cooking demonstrations. So, culinary enthusiasts can take home recipes from the presentations — and then make the yummy dishes at home too.

Along with the ship’s executive chef, the Gastronomic Guest will also participate, in the Yachtsman Cookoff.  That’s Atlas’ version of a culinary “ironman” competition.

Chef Rudi Scholdis is one Gastronomic Guest aboard Atlas Ocean Voyages this year. Photo by Atlas Ocean Voyages.

Gastronomic Guests will also accompany culinary-focused Cultural Immersion tours ashore; those will be complimentary for Epicurean Expeditions. So, guests might sample tapas in Barcelona or explore a farmer’s market in Corsica.

Or, we personally love the thought of shopping with the Gastronomic Guest for chocolates and wine along Italy’s Cinque Terre.

Chef Rudi Scholdis

One famed 2023 Gastronomic Guest is Chef Rudi Scholdis. He’ll sail on World Traveller’s Epicurean Expeditions from April 15 to May 31 and from July 15 to August 15. He’ll also sail with guests on World Navigator in September and October 2023.

Scholdis has cooked alongside such culinary luminaries as Alain Ducasse  and  Charlie Trotter. He also learned from his lifelong mentors  Willy Elsner  and  Anton Mosimann . The celebrity chef owns two gourmet restaurants in  Chile.

One is Amandine Bistro et Vins   in  Santiago. The other is Casa de Amalia , which opened last year in the  Maule wine-producing region. Prior to that, he was affiliated with luxury cruise lines for more than 17 years.  The Belgian-born Scholdis also has a history of cooking at Michelin -starred venues in Europe.

New Alma Alfresco Experience

Atlas also has another savory new option for gastronomy fans. Those traveling on Epicurean Expeditions can dine at a new open-air dining concept called Alma Alfresco. It’s located in an outdoor area aft of the main restaurant and is complimentary for guests.

“Particularly appealing  is that Alma Alfresco’s wine-pairing menu will offer an authentic Portuguese dining experience,” says Shelby Steudle , president, Pavlus Travel. She adds that “it’s an ode of sorts to the line’s heritage.”  That’s because while Atlas is a yacht expedition brand headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, FL, it’s owned by Mystic Invest Holdings, which hails from Portugal.

Epicurean Cruises: Traditions from Portugal

Guests can expect this new culinary experience to feature Portuguese recipes passed down for generations and prepared using artisanal techniques, cookware, and traditional ingredients. “Alma means soul in Portuguese and our new venue showcases the gastronomic soul of Portugal,” emphasizes James Rodriguez , Atlas’ president and CEO.

The Alma Alfresco specialty dining experience will showcase traditional Portuguese cuisine. Photo by Atlas Ocean Voyages.

So, what’s to savor? Menu items may include Polvo à Lagareiro from Santa Luzia . That’s a dish of oven-roasted octopus and potatoes in a bath of olive oil and roasted garlic, from Santa Luzia. Or, guests might taste Alheira de Mirandela , traditional Portuguese sausage, sauteed radish greens and potatoes. It originated in Mirandela.

The meal will also deliver the sweet taste of Torta de Azeitão from Setubal. That’s a delicious, rolled sponge cake dessert filled with egg custard cream.

For more information on Atlas, here’s a link to the Atlas Ocean Voyages’ website.

“But when it’s time to sort out the accommodations choices, decide about pre- and post-cruise options and secure the latest discounts or promotions, be sure to contact a professional travel advisor , ” suggests Pavlus Travel’s Steudle. “A personal travel planner is an invaluable resource and you’ll also get great service.”

One of the major regions wine fans will be attracted to Azamara is their itinerary design. Although some lines repeat the same route week after week, Azamara gradually moves its ships around the globe, allowing wine enthusiasts to book a segment calling on ports in their favorite wine regions.

Wine on board: Azamara includes beverages as part of their all-inclusive pricing. They offer a selection of several varietals in almost unlimited quantities along with a high standard of liquors like Gordon’s Gin. Passengers can sip Nicholas Feuillatte Brut Champagne to their heart’s content by upgrading to the Ultimate Beverage Package priced at $23.95/day or choosing their “By the bottle” wine list.

Spectacular wine experiences: If your itinerary includes the city of Bordeaux, expect an overnight stay to explore the city and spectacular tour options like a visit to both Chateau Lynch Bages in Paulliac and Chateau Kirwan in Margaux.

seven seas tasting cruise

You would expect a line that encourages tuxedos and kilts for men on formal nights to excel in the wine department. Cunard is the only line offering regular transatlantic service on seven-night voyages aboard Queen Mary 2.  On voyages like these, the ship is your destination, and the wines do not disappoint.

Wine on board: Cunard’s wine list offers over 480 wines from 27 countries. The Port Bar features that namesake beverage, offering vintages dating back to 1840, the year Samuel Cunard founded the company. Cunard offers classes from the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) onboard in addition to wine and food pairing themed lunches. Their wine list features some of the world’s rarest bottles like Domaine Leflaive Montrachet, Penfold’s Grange and Domaine de la Romanee Conti selections.

Spectacular wine experiences: As a wine connoisseur you are familiar with the five famous first growths of Bordeaux, but have you ever tasted them side by side in a five-wine flight? Cunard offers this tasting of these famous Premier Crus at around $350.

Began an extraordinary wine journey with the Ultra-Premium Cruise Lines below and discover curated wine lists that elevate your taste buds to new heights of luxury.

Here is a line offering nine dining options. There are times you prefer a salad and rose wine alfresco. You might want champagne and canapes in your stateroom or Italian cuisine in Osteria D’Ovidio.

Wine onboard: The Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony also feature The Vintage Room, an ideal venue for food and wine pairings. The line has redefined inclusive luxury by offering wines like Jacquart champagne and Bandi Chianti Classico Reserva.

Spectacular wine experience: The Vintage room is the setting for their six-course tasting menu matched with appropriate wines ($300/head) or the Ultimate Vintage Room Dinner ($1,200/head).

Explora Journeys

Explora is MSC Cruises’ entry into the luxury cruise market. You can tell you are an honor guest as you are greeted with a welcome bottle of champagne in your suite and your choice of spirits.

Wines onboard: The thinking behind the inclusive wine list is to identify wines by varietal while featuring those varieties from undiscovered places or producers within the wine regions where the ship is sailing.

Spectacular wine experience: Every ship has at least one wine sommelier, but how many other ships have a Sake sommelier to help compliment your Asian entrée?

seven seas tasting cruise

Holland America

Here is a line ideal for wine fans. Their ships have a series of specialty restaurants, ideal for the wine fan seeking to match wines with courses. Expect to find an American steakhouse, French seafood restaurant, Italian venue along with an Asian restaurant. Suitable wines are available in each venue.

Wine onboard: Holland America Line won the top spot from VIBE Vista, an industry group, for best wine program in 2020. They teamed up with James Suckling, longtime Wine Spectator editor to offer a wine list comprised of wines all rated 90+ points. These wines are at all price points.

Spectacular wine experience: In addition to an excellent wine program, Holland America also has a Whisky bar onboard. The selection is extensive and large tags are attached to each bottle eliminating the uncertainty of the cost of each whisky. They hold tutored tastings too.

seven seas tasting cruise

Oceania has had a longstanding relationship with world famous chef, Jacques Pepin. In partnership with Wine Spectator, they have brought La Reserve, a wine sanctuary to their Marina and Riviera ships.

Wine onboard: You are expecting good wine, but it’s always a treat to discover great wines that are hard to find elsewhere. Oceania has recently introduced its Rare Wine Collection including hard to find names like Mouton Rothschild and Ornellaia.

Spectacular wine experiences: Wine enthusiasts enjoy nothing more than a leisurely served tasting menu with wines paired with each course. La Cuisine Bourgeoise is one example of what’s in store for you.

seven seas tasting cruise

Regent Seven Seas

For a cruise line known for ships that are not too large, Regent Seven Seas features The Compass Rose, the largest specialty restaurant across their fleet. Regent maintains a partnership with Food & Wine Trails, who provide shore excursions for the gourmet traveler. If you want to visit a distillery in Ireland or a vineyard in Bordeaux, this is an ideal choice.

Wine onboard: This is the place to find an excellent selection of California wines. The complimentary wines are ones you would be proud to serve at home, like a 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape.

Spectacular Wine Experience: Wine fans know the Wine Spectator compiles an annual list of top restaurants with spectacular wine lists. The latest list includes The Compass Rose, located on the Regent Seven Seas ship Seven Seas Explorer. They have held a WS Award of Excellence since 2020.

seven seas tasting cruise

Here is a line that was known for smaller ships and larger luxury before other cruise lines jumped on the bandwagon. If you have sailed with Seaborne before, you know what to expect.

Wine onboard: A substantial selection of approximately 15 whites and another 15 reds from around the world are included with your cruise fare. Nicolas Feuillate champagne is on the list too. For wine fans thinking they might need to “trade up” to find better wines, you should find favorites like Saint Emilion from Bordeaux, Provence rose and Albarino from Spain on the list.

Spectacular wine experience: Seaborne has an interesting option for lovers of fine wine. Select a package at one of three tiers ($350, $600, $850) and enjoy a 17-24% bonus.

seven seas tasting cruise

SeaDream Yacht Club

SeaDream’s theme is “It’s yachting, not cruising.” If you want to sail on a vessel with 112 passengers max, served by 95 crew, look no further. Now combine a smaller ship with a wine-themed destination.

Wine onboard: Expect wine themed activities like a tasting menu dinner hosted by a winemaker who pairs wines with each course. Wine tasting sessions are hosted by local winery personnel.

Spectacular wine experience: The “Champagne and Caviar Splash” takes place on Caribbean voyages. Enough said.

seven seas tasting cruise

Silversea ships are smaller and sail to all seven continents. Smaller ships can get into ports that larger ships cannot. Venice, Italy and Hamilton, Bermuda are examples of ports where smaller ships have an advantage,

Wine onboard: With 70 selections on the complimentary list, industry experts credit their list as the largest inclusive selection at sea.

Spectacular Wine Experience: If 70 selections is not enough, the Connoisseur list includes Vega Sicilia Unico (2005), possibly Spain’s rarest and most expensive wine. Red Burgundy is represented by Jacques Prieur Clos de Vougeot (2012) and Chateau d’Yquem (2006) is a tempting dessert wine from the Sauternes region of Bordeaux.

seven seas tasting cruise

Swan Hellenic

Here is a line known for expedition cruises to destinations like the North and South poles and other beautiful remote parts of Europe, Scotland, Africa and many others. Although you are retracing the steps of explorers, you are not forgoing luxury. Every suite onboard has its own fireplace!

Wine onboard: Swan Hellenic has partnered with Jeunes Restauranteurs (JRE) to provide a dining experience hosted by visiting chefs, many with Michelin stars to their credit. The wine sommeliers are beyond capable with finding the wine you may desire from a very interesting wine list.

Spectacular Wine Experience: S hips have a very well-stocked bar with a selection of wines and beers included, a selection of premium beers, wine and spirits are available at an additional cost. In the evening the maître d’ can accommodate any special requests.

seven seas tasting cruise

Viking Ocean

Viking River Cruises is a household name. Building on that success, they launched a fleet of ocean-going vessels. One of the features making Viking unique is the inclusion of shore excursions. If you are traveling to a wine region, you should expect a visit to a vineyard.

Wine onboard: Viking offers complimentary house wines, beers and soft drinks with onboard lunches and dinners, plus specialty coffees and assorted hot teas that are available 24 hours a day. For those who would like to upgrade and enjoy unlimited beverages, Viking offers a Silver Spirits beverage package, which covers any drinks (excluding champagne) up to $18.00 USD, including premium wines by the glass, cocktails, all house pouring wines, champagnes, beers, liquors, well drinks, mixers/long drinks and soft drinks throughout the day for a flat fee per guest.

Spectacular Wine Experience: Viking allows passengers to bring their own wine (within limits) and does not charge corkage fees for wine you bring into the dining room. This can be your opportunity to find spectacular bottles onshore and share them with your tablemates as you recount your experiences.

Whether you are exploring the wonders of the seas or engaging in opulence, these cruise lines ensure every glass raised onboard is a celebration of the finest wines. Cheers to a journey of luxury and flavors!  Written with help from Bryce, a true wine connoisseur.

1 thought on “Wine Connoisseur Paradise: Navigating the Wine Personalities of Ultra-Luxury and Ultra-Premium Cruise Ships”

For a wine fan, there is plenty of choice. Several lines have spectacular wines onboard along with tasting menus. If you are traveling to ports in “wine country” it looks like they offer seriously wine themed shore excursions.

7 best cruises for seniors who love to travel by sea

T he best senior cruises mix adult-focused onboard activities with fascinating destinations ashore. No two retirees want the same thing from their travels. However, generally, most seniors have time to dedicate to longer itineraries.

Some have saved their money to enjoy a more premium cruise ship experience, but all are happy to snap up a cruise deal or find a promotion offering increased value from their cruise booking.

How did we choose the top cruises for seniors? We prioritized cruise lines that target couples and adults, rather than families, as well as cruise ships with fine dining, grownup entertainment and plenty of opportunities to socialize. We looked for destination-intensive cruises offering immersive cultural opportunities, bucket-list itineraries and a range of sailing lengths.

We dismissed the huge ships with their whiz-bang top-deck attractions, although these are ideal for grandparents on a multigenerational holiday with family. We also skipped the small expedition ships that require a level of physical fitness not all seniors possess.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Based on those criteria, here are the seven best cruise lines for seniors who love to travel and are looking to spend more time at sea.

Viking 's 930-passenger ocean ships top our list of the best cruises for seniors because they are designed specifically for an adult crowd. No one younger than 18 is allowed on board, and all the programming is created with passengers aged 50-plus in mind.

These cruises are ideal for academic-minded seniors. Viking chairman Torstein Hagen says that he set out to create "the thinking person's cruise," and lectures and other destination-specific programming are the main form of entertainment on board. That doesn't mean Viking cruises are boring, though. In fact, the crowd-pleasing ABBA tribute show in the theater is not to be missed.

Viking ships are comfortable, homey oases done up in sophisticated Scandinavian decor.

Itineraries are focused on getting senior cruisers to key attractions around the world, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with a shore excursion each day included in the cruise fare. Thrifty retirees will appreciate the "no nickel and diming" philosophy and cruise fares that cover everything except cocktails and spa treatments.

Complimentary dining includes a specialty Italian restaurant and the Chef's Table, with its rotating tasting menus themed around international cuisines.

Related: What's included in your cruise fare?

Also recommended for the senior and baby boomer crowd are Viking's river ships in Europe , Vietnam and Egypt (among other destinations) and the line's expedition products in Antarctica and on the Great Lakes , which have similarities to the ocean ships, including the all-inclusive pricing.

Windstar Cruises

Windstar 's small sailing ships and motorized yachts range from 148 to 342 passengers. Although kids 8 and older are allowed on board, you are unlikely to see many on these upscale vessels. Most Windstar cruisers are active seniors who come as couples, pairs of friends or solo travelers, looking for a destination-rich experience on ships where they won't feel lost in a crowd.

Windstar has two classes of ships. Older couples celebrating a milestone anniversary should choose a sailing ship, with its vast open deck space and picturesque sails that set the mood for romance. Seniors who prefer more personal space should seek out the 312-passenger motorized yachts with their all-suite accommodations.

Related: A beginner's guide to picking a cruise line

Cruise highlights on all ships include an outdoor deck party with a lavish buffet and late-night conga line, as well as meals created by James Beard Foundation-affiliated chefs. (Windstar partners with the prestigious culinary organization.)

Because of their small size, all Windstar ships can visit quiet harbors and out-of-the-way places that big ships can't in destinations like Tahiti, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean .

Azamara Cruises

With four nearly identical ships holding fewer than 700 passengers each, Azamara has carved out a niche catering to well-traveled seniors looking to cruise in clubby surroundings.

The line's cruises are best for seniors who don't want to splurge on a fancier luxury product but still want an upscale level of ambiance, service and amenities. While kids aren't banned, the line makes clear on its website that it "discourages" passengers younger than 18.

Azamara passengers appreciate the boutique hotel-like decor, which includes faux fireplaces in the impressive libraries, called The Drawing Room on each vessel.

The line's destination-focused itineraries in Europe and elsewhere spend more time in ports than average ships, staying overnight in key destinations. This is ideal for passengers who want to explore on their own. The line also offers a complimentary "AzAmazing Evenings" program on every cruise. They feature cultural performances ashore in amazing destinations, such as Turkey's ancient city of Ephesus.

Related: 5 best adults-only cruise lines

Holland America

Holland America is one of the best cruise lines for seniors because it hits the sweet spot with its midsize ships. Carrying 2,668 passengers or fewer, these vessels offer big-ship amenities but lack the more over-the-top waterslides and thrill attractions found on megaships. The line is a great choice for baby boomers and older seniors who wish to enjoy the line's alternative dining options, casinos and choice of entertainment.

An older crowd does not mean a sedate group. Holland America hosts live music in a big way. Passengers dance the night away at venues that include B.B. King's Blues Club, featuring some of the best live bands at sea. Explorations Central (EXC) programming is designed to educate passengers about the destinations they visit, and a fun roster of other onboard pursuits includes a winemaking experience with Chateau Ste. Michelle.

The ships are also particularly accessible. Many staterooms offer roll-in showers and other assistive features. Vessels also are equipped with a lift system for pools and tenders.

Related: The 4 classes of Holland America ships, explained

In addition to one-week cruises in the Caribbean and Alaska (the line's specialty), Holland America explores South America, the South Pacific and other destinations around the globe. The line also offers months-long world cruises.

Senior travelers with a penchant for traditional cruising will find Cunard 's ocean liners to be a top cruise option. Founded in 1840, the cruise line has a long legacy and is proud of its less casual vibe, which includes nightly dress codes. Go old-school with dress-up galas held in real ballrooms with high ceilings and twinkling chandeliers. Gentlemen hosts are on hand if ladies need a dance partner.

Those same ballrooms host daily afternoon tea, complete with finger sandwiches and scones with cream, served on fine china by white-gloved waiters. Other refined onboard activities include watching shows in Queen Mary 2's onboard planetarium, attending lectures by guest speakers, fencing, taking art classes and enjoying classical concerts.

Not everyone stays in a fancy suite, but seniors ready to splurge should book either Queens Grill or Princess Grill rooms for upscale accommodations and meals served in exclusive, intimate restaurants.

QM2 is the only ship that offers regular transatlantic service between Southampton, England, and New York. The 2,081-passenger Queen Elizabeth and 2,061-passenger Queen Victoria spend time in Europe and other destinations, and all three ships offer world cruises around the globe. When it debuts in 2024, the line's 3,000-passenger Queen Anne will also sail in the Mediterranean.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Retirees who have worked hard and are ready to treat themselves right will find that Regent Seven Seas Cruises is one of the best cruises for seniors looking for luxury.

The cruise line brags of operating the most luxurious ships afloat. It's hard to argue that point, especially on the line's latest ship, $545 million, 746-passenger, all-suite Seven Seas Grandeur. The ship boasts a football field's worth of marble, an impressive art collection and one of the most expensive suites at sea — a Regent Suite, which is priced at $11,000 per day, per couple.

Other high-end lines, such as Seabourn and Silversea , operate intimate ships with extraordinary service, accommodations and cuisine. However, Regent differs with its shore excursion-inclusive, one-stop-shopping fares and grand European hotel ambience — especially on the sister ships Seven Seas Splendor and Seven Seas Explorer.

Related: 12 best all-inclusive cruise lines

The other Regent ships are well-maintained 480- to 684-passenger older vessels. On all, if you don't feel like going to one of the restaurants, you can stay in your bathrobe and order a meal served course by course in your suite.

Also, except for summer and holiday periods, you are unlikely to find kids on board.

Regent sails to some 450 ports of call around the world, including world cruise itineraries, so senior travelers can find sailings to all the destinations they've been waiting to explore.

Oceania Cruises

Wellness-focused seniors love Oceania Cruises ' 648- to 1,210-passenger ships for their spa and fitness center and healthy food options. Foodies are drawn by the inspired dining. PBS host and cookbook author Jacques Pepin has a French bistro on the line's two largest ships, Marina and Riviera, and he's one of the line's culinary advisors. All the line's ships include impressive steakhouses , and some feature Red Ginger, an extraordinary modern take on Asian cuisine, as well as other eateries.

The ships provide an appealing country club-like ambiance, which is upscale without being fancy. Older passengers tend to be the sort who like to entertain themselves, though they might be distracted by the standout attraction of a real cooking school where expert chefs give classes on Marina and Riviera.

As a nod to solo travelers, the line is in the process of adding solo cabins designed and priced for one.

Oceania is known for destination-focused itineraries in the Caribbean, Alaska and Europe, among other places. Most are 10 nights or longer; world cruises are up to 180 days.

Bottom line

You'll find seniors on nearly every cruise line out there. Some older travelers are looking to explore the world, while others prefer cheap trips to beachy destinations.

Everyone's top choice will be different, but we think these seven lines represent the best senior cruises. They prioritize an adult-focused onboard experience and destination-intensive itineraries more readily accessible to retirees.

Wine Tasting

Cool Cruiser

I’ve read in some posts about wine tasting on Regent cruises where there is an opportunity to taste the available included wines and also some specialty wines for an up charge. When and where does that normally happen (I would assume early in the cruise) and how do you sign up to participate in that activity?

There is usually a tasting of the included wines on the first sea day which you can just turn up to (at approx 10:30/45am - not sure what happens if there aren't any sea days 😁 ) and a wine tasting lunch which includes 5 or so of the speciality wines which costs $169 each. I recommend signing up for this with your sommelier at lunch as you board as it is usually oversubscribed.

Alas,  there isn’t really a tasting of the upcharge wines.  Need to pay for that.  However,  the included tasting,  we always go to, to determine if there is something we like.  We always find a couple.

We did the wine tasting on the first sea day of Cape Town-Cape Town  You could easily walk by and not see it if you weren't looking for it.

It was very nice and informative.  Someone commented that there were no South African wines.  It was explained that the wines in the tasting are a standard set that are always available on all the Regent ships as part of included wines.  We found some nice wines and later on in the cruise, I ordered one I liked and no problem at all, it showed up.

Were South African wines available? I think they touted in the recent Society Pages, that they do stock South African wines in that part of the world.

We always drink Pinotage on our Regent cruises.  Never an issue.

We had some South African wines on our recent Voyager cruise. Don't know if it had anything to do with Voyager coming from South Africa so the supply would be easier to get.

For the wine tasting there were no South African Wines.  The Sommelier said the tasting was for wines that are common on all the ships and basically would always be available.  The South African wines may not be consistently available on all the ships.

Yes, there were South African wines onboard that were included, just not at the tasting.

This was a new one for us and we loved it.....very nice!

We will be on a Mariner transatlantic cruise in September and would like to attend the wine lunch that you pay for. Is it possible to sign up for the wine lunch on embankment day other than directly with a sommelier (eg reception)?  As always appreciate advice from the more experienced Regent cruisers!

We just recently did the wine lunch on the Splendor. I don't think you can sign up for this before boarding, but if you know you want to do this for sure, ask for the head sommelier at dinner your first night. They will advise you to when it will be and you'll be put on the list to receive an invitation  sent to your cabin with dates, price, etc. Then sign up immediately as it sells out fast! Well worth the cost (in our opinion) and lots of fun!

Thanks, Mudhen!

We had lunch in the buffet when we boarded.  Our wine server gave us the information about the Wine Tasting.  We said we wanted to do it and she filled out the paperwork and billed our room.  Our friends tried to sign up the next day and it was full.  I believe any bar person can sign you up.

Thanks

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Russia establishes special site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600

!{Model.Description}

A special production site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600 fast reactor under construction has been established at Russia’s Mashinostroitelny Zavod (MSZ - Machine-Building Plant) in Elektrostal (Moscow region), part of Rosatom’s TVEL Fuel Company.

As part of the project, MSZ had upgraded existing facilities fo the production of fuel for fast reactors, TVEL said on 3 March. Unique equipment has been created and installed, and dummy CFR-600 fuel assemblies have already been manufactured for testing.

The new production site was set up to service an export contract between TVEL and the Chinese company CNLY (part of China National Nuclear Corporation - CNNC) for the supply of uranium fuel for CFR-600 reactors. Construction of the first CFR-600 unit started in Xiapu County, in China's Fujian province in late 2017 followed by the second unit in December 2020. The contract is for the start-up fuel load, as well as refuelling for the first seven years. The start of deliveries is scheduled for 2023.

“The Russian nuclear industry has a unique 40 years of experience in operating fast reactors, as well as in the production of fuel for such facilities,” said TVEL President Natalya Nikipelova. “The Fuel Division of Rosatom is fulfilling its obligations within the framework of Russian-Chinese cooperation in the development of fast reactor technologies. These are unique projects when foreign design fuel is produced in Russia. Since 2010, the first Chinese fast neutron reactor CEFR has been operating on fuel manufactured at the Machine-Building Plant, and for the supply of CFR-600 fuel, a team of specialists from MSZ and TVEL has successfully completed a complex high-tech project to modernise production,” she explained.

A special feature of the new section is its versatility: this equipment will be used to produce fuel intended for both the Chinese CFR-600 and CEFR reactors and the Russian BN-600 reactor of the Beloyarsk NPP. In the near future, the production of standard products for the BN-600 will begin.

The contract for the supply of fuel for the CFR-600 was signed in December 2018 as part of a governmental agreement between Russia and China on cooperation in the construction and operation of a demonstration fast neutron reactor in China. This is part of a wider comprehensive programme of cooperation in the nuclear energy sector over the coming decades. This includes serial construction of the latest Russian NPP power units with generation 3+ VVER-1200 reactors at two sites in China (Tianwan and Xudabao NPPs). A package of intergovernmental documents and framework contracts for these projects was signed in 2018 during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
