Live reviews

On n’aura en effet droit qu’aux seuls You As You Were et 74-75.

Shearwater has to be a band that is difficult to place at certain venues. On the one hand, it produces small, intimate songs about the daily struggles we all go through, on the other it produces sprawling soundscapes with no clear topic but pure emotion. At their concert in Vera, a medium sized underground club in Groningen, it is clear that the former works better in this setting than the latter. That is by no means a bad thing. Shearwater is a hard working, amiable band headed by the charismatic Jonathan Meiburg, that can please a crowd no matter what. The intimate songs work great with the crowd and Meiburg has them in the palm of his hand when he introduces those songs. The bigger, more elaborate songs work less well on the small podium. Although the lighting and gimmicks are amazing, you can feel how it work even better in a large concert hall filled with a vibrant crowd. The crowd here isn't working, and it feels like a shame that they react most to the Bowie covers that are played as an encore.

Shearwater's set is namely a great experience for those who know and love the band. Every song gets a slightly different treatment to its album version. You see the complicated workings behind those amazing intertwining reverbs and riffs. Even those grandiose potential stadium rockers as You As You Were would work great if the crowd would see the magic going on on the stage.

Alas, this is not the club for orchestral manoeuvres in laser light. That speaks more to the club and crowd than to Shearwater though.

There aren’t too many more bands I’ve seen live more times than I’ve seen the high-tension dramatics of Jonathan Meiburg’s Shearwater. The line-up supporting him might change from time to time, but with his song writing chops it’s always going to be a set of the utmost quality. Once part of Okkervil River and a keen ornithologist (the band is named after a winged beast, of course) and naturalist, Meiburg didn’t hit on real success with his band (also consisting of incredible drummer and multi-instrumentalist Thor Harris, who batters the skins for Swans, and upright bassist Kim Burke, who doesn’t always tour) until the “Island Arc” (from 2006 to 2010) trilogy of records Palo Santo, Rook and The Golden Archipelago. These records form the basis of the live set, and the songs from it often swell from gentle instrumental beginnings to dramatic climaxes based around Meiburg’s vocal gymnastics. Highlights are the piano-led histrionics of ‘Seventy-four, Seventy-five’, the string-laden ‘Leviathan Bound’ (played on some flattened harp contraption by Harris) and the beautiful balladry of ‘The Hunter’s Star’. Most recent album Animal Joy added some unexpected guitar muscle to the Shearwater repertoire, a product of a stripped down sound and not being able to tour with Harris and Burke but if you catch them in this form then you’ll hear a rousing cover version of R.E.M.’s ‘Begin the Begin’ which takes the place of their gorgeous version of Talk Talk’s ‘The Rainbow’.

This was my first visit to the Brudenell Social Club. It turned out to be a great experience. Well balanced sound, great view for whoever, wherever, and no psychopaths dancing around in your space/face. Shearwater were vibrant, and full of energy. They knew their audience and treated them to a rockier set list than their back catalog would suggest. The performance was tight, and the light show tighter. The tracks were mainly from the new album; Jet Plane and Oxbow. They were thumped out with passion and commitment. Like me, a lot of the audience were slightly confused by the Bowie tribute trilogy as an encore. Unexpected, and not every-bodies begged for earful, but a fitting end when considered. A good friendly evening full of dynamic energy. Thanks for sharing.

Live show was even better than expected. There was a very strong atmosphere, with smoke and various lighting effects. Meiburg is a powerhouse; his voice is beautiful and haunting, and the mood he brings to the live songs (especially the songs from the new album) enhances them in the best sort of way. Was also very friendly with the audience, offering banter between songs and taking the time to speak with people after the show. I'm absolutely impressed with Shearwater and will definitely see them next time they come to town.

Kayak Orcas Island After Dark

Orcas Island is not known for its nightlife, but this is it! Join us on a two-hour evening kayak tour through sheltered Deer Harbor as we search for magical, twinkling bioluminescence. The San Juan Islands have significant tidal exchanges that create strong upwellings. These conditions make our water rich with nutrients, providing a diverse habitat for microorganisms. Some of the microorganisms have the ability to create their own light.

As the water is stirred by marine life and our paddle strokes, it causes a reactive glow. These microorganisms are most numerous following long, sunny days and most visible around new moons. Sightings are common but vary in intensity and are never guaranteed. To maximize the best sightings, we offer bioluminescence tours during the darkest nights of summer. These tours are very popular, so book early to experience the natural marine lights from the depths of the Salish Sea.

Shearwater provides stable two-person kayaks, all the necessary kayaking gear, dry storage bags, and professional guide service. No kayak experience is required. Our tours include about 30 minutes of gear adjustment and basic instruction. Expect about an hour and a half on the water on this tour.

Start times vary. O ffered on the darkest nights of June to September. Call for details.

Restrictions Minimum age: 15 years Maximum weight: 260 lbs /person Maximum height: 6’4″

Meeting Location : Deer Harbor Marina. Meet outside The Barge Gift Shop, down the right hand ramp by the shop at the end of the main dock.

Cancellations:  You want to go kayaking. We want to take you kayaking. We understand plans sometimes change. Cancellations more than 48 hours in advance of a standard, scheduled tour are fully refunded (more than 5 days in advance for groups of 5+; private and custom tours have a separate policy). Late cancellations or changes, late arrivals, and no-shows are refunded only if we are able to fill the tour. → Please read our Cancellations page for details. ←

Tour Itinerary

With the 1000-year history, Russia has had a rich portfolio of conflicts, battles, wars. On this Soviet tour, we'll talk about various wars that happened in Russia, focusing on WWII.

Mother Russia has undergone a lot in its long life. Since ancient times, Russian rulers have taken nearly all political power into their own hands. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian oppositional movement was deadly set for the total destruction of the ever-lasting tsarist regime. All of Russia got involved in the bloody revolution of 1917 in an effort to abolish the current state of the government and gain freedom for the ordinary people.

You will learn about the every-day life of the Soviet people during the bloody Second World War with the Nazis, including the legendary Battle for Moscow, the 900-day siege of Leningrad, the hardships that local citizens went through, the consequences of the war and the scars it left on the Soviet people, as well as why the Cold War happened and what was the fundamental reason.

Our mission on the Soviet Russia tour is to find out

  • - How much this 1917 revolution cost the people;
  • - Whether they actually got the freedom they wanted and was it worth it;
  • - What happened over the next 74 years;
  • - Who were the main political communist leaders of the Soviet Union;
  • - Were Russians happy and satisfied with the Soviet Union?

Our tour itinerary will lie in most Soviet areas of Moscow, which are quite spread throughout the city, as very few of them are left. You can choose how much you are ready to live this Soviet life on a 5, 7 or 10-hour tour. Depending on the duration of the tour, you will see part or all of the places below:

If you want to extend the tour, you are welcome to do so by paying $20/extra hour in cash on the tour.

Time stands still in Red Square. The Red Square is the heart of Moscow (and whole Russia). Saint Basil's Cathedral will make your mouth drop. If it is from May-October, have a cocktail on the outside terrace and simply people watch! The massive square offers so much to enjoy.

Lenin's Mausoleum

The burial place of one of the most influential communist leaders in the world.

Revolution Square Metro Station

Rub the Soviet dog's nose for good luck and admire the 76 bronze sculptures, devoted to the passionate, strong-willed and patriotic Soviet people.

Poklonnaya Hill

The highest point in Moscow, where Napoleon waited for keys of the city.

All-Russian Exhibition Center (VVC)

With its giant arch, amazing fountain, and huge pavilions of different Soviet Republics.

Victory Park Metro Station

The deepest undeground station in Moscow and one of the deepest in the world.

Victory Park

For an open-air museum as big as 135 ha (1 350 000 square meters), Victory park sure doens't lack diversity. The park is dedicated to the Russian victory in WWII, and was laid out in 1995 in commemoration of 50-year anniversary of victory.

Stalin had planned for its construction already in 1941, being sure of victory from the very start of the war.

Greeting Hill

The highest points in Moscow (172 meters), where Napoleon waited for keys of Moscow in vain.

Triumphal Arch

Stunning monument consisting of 12 cast-iron columns, each 12 meters high, and weighing 16 tons. Built to mark Russia's victory over Napoleon in 1812.

Museum of the Great Patriotic War

In the city that is as much about wars as it is about victories, there is one essential stopover - the Museum of the Great Patriotic War (that's what WWII is called in Russia). Must-do for those wishing to understand Russia's past and look at the whole war from the different perspective - Russian.

The museum is not for the faint-hearted. Here you can see films about the partisan experience, the scenes that will haunt you forever (no subtitles, but they are not necessary).

Museum of Contemporary History (from outside only)

We'll have a glance at Russian life of the XX century in the  Museum of Contemporary History , which houses bits of everything from Russian history of XXth century: from English club to a storage of Stalin's presents.

Memorial to the Holocaust,

devastating and breath-taking!

Unleash your inner spy. Highly recommended  Bunker-42 ,  Cold War Museum , explore the place where Khrushchev lived during the Cuban Crisis. Go down 18 floors to a gigantic bunker under Moscow that was designed to withstand a nuclear attack. Watch a short film about the severity of the Cold War. If you lived through the Cold War, you will hardly believe it is possible that you are in Bunker 42!

Wander through  Sparrow Hills  and climb up to the highest observation deck of Moscow with stunning views of all seven Stalin’s skyscrapers, including  Moscow State University . After that, experience the excitement of taking a  river cruise  on the Moscow river and catch the views of the Kremlin and Soviet times.
