With the many places I’ve been to, I found that love, inspiration, and happiness are some things that bring people together. No matter how different we are on the outside, I’m a true believer that our emotions don’t lie; if you dig deep into our psyche, we’re all the same inside.

This belief was further amplified when I joined Quote Ambition. Through the quotes I’ve read, collected, organized, and written about, I found that humans are resilient, creative, and compassionate.

We take from each others’ hearts and courage, and it’s through our individual experiences that we learn how to rise above our challenges and pain. In so many ways, Quote Ambition is a platform that allows people from all over the world to gain the inspiration they need anytime, anywhere!

The Importance of Friendship in Star Trek

To achieve a united Federation-esque society, we need to appreciate cross-cultural friendships.

StarTrek.com

One of the things I found most unsettling in my first viewing of Star Trek: Enterprise was the difficult relationships between humans and the Vulcans.

Archer closes his eyes as T'Pol looks up at him

The Vulcans were paternalistic, appeared condescending, and could even engage in duplicitous acts. There was a cloud of suspicion that they were stultifying human exploration and the progress of Starfleet’s programs. In addition to some odd discontinuities with the other series, it was these cultural and relational motifs that I found unsettling. I was used to seeing Vulcans as close allies and friends of the humans in Starfleet.

However, the more I think about this, the more it makes sense. Vulcans were the first alien species to make contact with humans and their unemotional devotion to logic, their cultural proclivities and differences, and their modes of communication would be off-putting for those first generations after contact. It takes time and dedication, shared experiences and companionship in tragedy, patience and commitment to learn to grow friendships with those who are so different from our own worldviews.

This is the second essay in a series of three that asks the question — How do we move from our current situation, with all of its division, to the unity and flourishing found in the Federation? In the first, I wrote of the need for a well-rounded education that helps mold people into critical thinkers . In this second piece, I will discuss the necessity of cross-cultural friendships.

[ Editor's Note : In the third essay, Dr. Harvie examines importance of the Gorn and how facing a formidable opponent presents as an opportunity for transcendence .]

A McCoy faces a stoic and seated Spock who looks out directly in front of him on the bridge of the Enterprise in 'The Tholian Web'

The difficulties witnessed between species, and even among our favorite characters, were real and, at times, virulent. In the Star Trek: The Original Series ’ episode “ The Tholian Web ,” we are witness to some of this conflict. After Kirk disappears along with the starship Defiant , Spock and McCoy do not see eye to eye on the course of action the crew should take. The disagreement becomes so caustic that McCoy accuses Spock of opportunistically attempting to usurp Kirk’s command.

This seems a far cry from the friendships we come to know these characters enjoy. The friendship that develops between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy is not automatic. It is not something that happens with ease and it does not appear to come naturally for either McCoy or Spock. It is only with a lifetime of shared experiences and the unwavering commitment to the flourishing of the other in their midst that seemingly insurmountable differences become fodder for friendship.

Kirk, McCoy, and Spock sit around a campfire in Star Trek: The Final Frontier

We see the fruit of a lifetime of dedicated commitment to friendship in a particularly poignant scene in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier . Immediately after Kirk has a near-death experience whilst rock climbing, the famed trio sit around a campfire for some of McCoy’s homemade beans with a secret ingredient (Tennessee whiskey). It sees the aging Starfleet officers still getting on one another’s nerves, but now the irritation seems more feigned than actual. McCoy jokes with his companions, “You know you two can drive a man to drink.” The three move from jests to discussing their shared concerns and experiences of life and death. McCoy continues reflecting on friendship saying, “It’s a mystery to me what draws us together. All that time in space and getting on each other’s nerves, what do we do when shore leave comes along? We spend it together.”

McCoy reflects on the realities and ideals of friendship with those who are different than him. McCoy chastises Kirk for his reckless abandon in climbing and exhibiting an apparent disregard for the preciousness of human life. He is still frustratingly bewildered at the difference of Spock’s culture, outlook, and way of being in the world. Spock’s literalism in wondering the merits of campfire singing cause McCoy to blurt out “God, I liked him better before he died!” Yet despite the differences, the cultural incongruities, the petty annoyances, and the genuine disagreements, in this scene, we see people coming together out of a mutual sense of care and dedication to the well-being of the others in the group.

McCoy, Spock, and Kirk raise a glass in 'Requiem for Methuselah'

One of the most influential discussions on friendship in the history of philosophy was conducted by Aristotle in Books VIII and IX in Nicomachean Ethics . Aristotle describes three types of friendships — pleasure, utility and seeking the benefit of the other for the other’s sake. In the first two types of friendship, be it because of fun or receiving something useful from the other, the primary motive is gaining something for oneself. Because of the inward focus of these two types of friendships, they tend to be short-lived and do not tend toward the development of character.

In the final type, people are not concerned primarily for themselves, but for the other. These friendships take time. They require constancy through hardship and devotion to the other’s welfare. Here the goal is to work toward the flourishing of another person rather than ensuring one’s own desires are paramount. Friends seek the benefit of each other, and in so doing also happen to be useful and pleasurable to one another. This friendship develops the character of each partner.

Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan Spock and Kirk Vulcan salute

However, Aristotle thought that this type of friendship required similarity. He thought that “like is drawn to like,” and this is necessary for mutually-enhancing friendship. Aristotle argued that people must be alike in virtue, but he thought this entailed being of similar social stature, culture, and worldview. What he failed to understand was that while communities with comparable outlooks, histories, and backgrounds can give a sense of security and warmth, they can also be insular and stagnant. If people remain friends only with those who have opinions and beliefs analogous to their own, these friendships can just as easily become narrow feedback loops of self-confirming attitudes.

It seems that the life-changing friendships in Star Trek are relationships which explore the essential mystery and wonder of a person who is fundamentally different than oneself. These differences include intellectual differences, differences in value-systems, religions, technical abilities, and life-philosophies.

A concerned Riker leans over a paralyzed Worf in his med-bed in 'Ethics'

One example is found in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “ Ethics .” The friendship between Commander Riker and Lt. Worf is tested by a vehement disagreement over culture and beliefs. Worf is paralyzed from an injury and wants Riker to assist in a Klingon ritual which involves ending Worf’s life. Riker is opposed to the ritual and yet wants to honor his friend. Riker finds the ritual despicable and one that exhibits beliefs regarding life that are fundamentally opposed to his own. He finds that though he cannot simply disregard Worf’s request, he will not take part in the ceremony.

What is most important here is that through this fundamental disagreement regarding core convictions about life their friendship remains strong. Their dedication to and respect for the other remains constant. For these individuals, dedicated friendship does not necessitate agreement. Having similar outlooks and beliefs is not a prerequisite for a friendship which has the other’s flourishing at its center.

Deanna Troi looks over and comforts a downtrodden Alexander in 'Ethics'

Aristotle’s insights into friendship offer us important categories for understanding the role of community in developing the kind of character important for a good life. What is missing is a dynamic account of the necessity of newness and difference in making that happen. In order to have the kind of society envisioned in the Federation, openness to novel experiences and relationships is a prerequisite for understanding. It requires the willingness to stick with someone in the midst of disagreement and continue to seek the betterment of others with whom we have little in common. Aristotle says that friendship depends on community.

In Star Trek, we see humans experience the misunderstandings and growing pains of expanding that community to increasingly encompass those we do not fully understand. One day we might have to learn how to get along with Vulcans or Klingons. Today, we can become friends with someone at the local community center, church, synagogue or mosque. We can become dedicated to someone with opposing political or philosophical beliefs. Today, we can learn how to have better, more-inclusive friendships.

Star Trek: Spock's Best Quotes Not From The Original Series

Star Trek fans, both new and old, may remember some of these Spock quotes.

  • Spock's line, "I Have Been And Always Shall Be Your Friend," in Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan, reflects the close bond between Spock and Kirk.
  • In Star Trek: The Original Series - Season 1, Episode 17, "Squire Of Gothos," Spock objects to intellect without discipline and power without constructive purpose.
  • Spock's line, "We Have Only Now," in Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, Episode 11, "Perpetual Infinity," brings a grounded perspective amidst the show's time-travel and futuristic elements.

The first Star Trek episodes aired in 1966, and Spock was there from the very beginning. Spock was one of the few characters that survived the transition from pilot to regular show when the entire cast was either rotated into another role or cut out completely for the official start of Season One.

Star Trek: Spock's Best Friends, Ranked

Repository of Vulcan wisdom, theme character, and best friend to James Kirk, Spock has been memed, parodied, and quoted at various times. There are whole pages of his memorable lines throughout the decades and the actors who have played him, and every single one of them are fascinating.

"I Have Been And Always Shall Be Your Friend."

Star trek 2: the wrath of khan (1982).

Lest it be forgotten that some of the earliest examples of "shipping," now a common practice, took place between the two main characters of the classic Star Trek show. This emotional scene at the end of The Wrath Of Khan at least confirmed that the two were very close friends.

This line returns in the next movie, not only when Sarek joins minds with Kirk in an early scene but also at the end, repeated by Spock upon his return. It wasn't just the repetition that fused this quote into the minds of the movie-going public but also its tear-jerking sincerity.

"We Have Only Now."

Star trek: discovery season 2, episode 11 "perpetual infinity" (2019).

When modern shows include Spock as a character, it's often as his younger self, partly because that was a time in his life when the movies or vintage shows never addressed in detail. His adventures with Michael Burnham remain classified in later years, a neat explanation as to why they were never discussed during his years on the Enterprise.

15 Spock Memes Only True Star Trek Fans Will Understand

This quote is memorable because of how ironic it is to appear in an episode entitled "Perpetual Infinity." It's a spin on the axiom "no time like the present" in a situation where nothing exists but the present, forever. In a show that includes spore drives, wormholes, and red angels from the future, Spock grounds the action and adventure with this simple truth.

"Logic Is The Beginning Of Wisdom...Not The End."

Star trek 6: the undiscovered country (1991).

Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country was the last feature film to include the cast from The Original Series . The plot of Star Trek 6 is more about political intrigue than fighting, and reflects some of the real-world events of the early 1990s, primarily the fall of the Soviet Union.

Star Trek: Spock's Biggest Mistakes & Failures

The plot of the movie starts with the impending destruction of the Klingon homeworld. In this scene, Spock is conversing with a fellow Vulcan and his favorite student, Valeris, and they seem to be on opposing sides of the important political issue of the day. Should Klingons be allowed to settle among the same races that they were trying to conquer only months ago? Valeris suggests the solution should be determined by logical means alone and Spock politely disagrees with this quote.

"Council, Ministers, I Must Decline."

Star trek (2009).

Star Trek (2009) was a new take on the younger days of the TOS characters, but this time in an alternate reality, although some of the canon events are the same. The moment when Spock refuses admission to the Vulcan Science Academy and opts to join Starfleet instead is one of the pivotal moments of the movie, and it was the first time this moment appeared on film after being referenced on several occasions.

The incident was serious enough to estrange Spock from his father for several years, according to the lore of the vintage series, and the way it's played out in the Kelvin Universe, it's easy to see why. Zachary Quinto expresses Spock's defiance by keeping it all inside, but at the same time expresses exactly how he feels, and caps it off with a sarcastic farewell - "Live long and prosper."

Best Spock Quotes In Star Trek: TOS

  • Leonard Nimoy's Spock was almost cut from Star Trek due to feedback on the failed pilot episode, but creator Gene Roddenberry chose to keep him.
  • Spock's mixed heritage and logical Vulcan mindset make him one of the franchise's most interesting characters, leading to great story ideas and dialogue.
  • Spock's dialogue and interactions in various episodes reveal his stoicism, friendship with Kirk, and his growth beyond purely Vulcan stoicism.

Leonard Nimoy's Spock is one of science fiction's most famous aliens, but the character came very close to being cut from the show in its earliest days. Feedback on Star Trek 's failed pilot episode gave creator Gene Roddenberry an ultimatum: get rid of the Satanic Spock , or ditch the Enterprise 's female second-in-command. Roddenberry chose to stick with Spock, and, with hindsight, it's difficult to argue that he made the wrong decision.

Star Trek: James T. Kirk's Best Friends, Ranked

Spock's mixed heritage makes him one of the franchise's most interesting characters. His affection for his friends is tempered by his logical Vulcan mindset, and this conflict has been mined for both great story ideas and great dialogue. Not every Spock-focused episode is a classic, but even the worst have some memorable lines.

"Live long, T'Pau, and prosper."

"amok time" ( the original series , season 2, episode 1).

"Amok Time" gave viewers of The Original Series their first real glimpse of the planet Vulcan. Spock returns home in order to confront his bride, T'Pring , although complications arise when T'Pring announces that she is more interested in another Vulcan, Stonn. Plot contrivances lead to Spock and Kirk fighting to the death with traditional Vulcan weapons, resulting in Kirk's apparent death.

Spock's dialogue with T'Pau, a Vulcan elder, not only demonstrates a previously unexplored facet of Vulcan society but also indicates Spock's stoicism, even in the face of Kirk's death. The line has since become a meme in popular culture, alongside the apocryphal "Beam me up, Scotty".

"I object to intellect without discipline. I object to power without constructive purpose."

"the squire of gothos" ( the original series , season 1, episode 17).

"The Squire of Gothos" prefigures concepts like the Q Continuum that would play a major role in The Next Generation . Kirk and Spock encounter Trelane, a powerful entity who toys with the Enterprise crew. Despite Trelane's vast powers, Spock is unimpressed. The Vulcan points out that Trelane's powers are a waste if not put to good use.

Star Trek: Christine Chapel and Spock's Romance, Explained

Spock's observation foreshadows a twist worthy of The Twilight Zone . The episode's conclusion reveals that the godlike Trelane is only a child, hence his mischievous behavior. "The Squire of Gothos" may be a slog for some fans to get through, but Spock's objections to Trelane's misused power serve the dual purpose of revealing something about Spock's character while hinting at Trelane's true nature.

"Captain, there is definite pleasure associated with the hearing of your voice."

"spock's brain" ( the original series , season 3, episode 1).

"Spock's Brain" is one of the worst-regarded episodes of The Original Series and marks a poor start to the show's final season. Spock is kidnapped by alien women who intend to use his brain to power their air-conditioning unit. Fans remain divided on whether the episode is a gloriously campy slice of fun or the absolute nadir of Star Trek storytelling, but Spock's friendship with Kirk in the episode is undeniable.

Kirk must locate Spock's brain and put it back in his robotized body within a limited time frame. It's one of science fiction's silliest race-against-time plots, but the usually unemotional Spock's relief at being reunited with his old friend makes for a genuinely touching moment in an otherwise schlocky episode.

"Computers make excellent and efficient servants, but I have no wish to serve under them."

"the ultimate computer" ( the original series , season 2, episode 24).

Spock is often remembered in popular culture as a relentlessly logical character, a kind of pointy-eared computer. However, the technological morality tale "The Ultimate Computer" demonstrates Spock's disdain for such technology when used incorrectly. Starfleet plans to replace the captains of its starships with advanced computers, and one is installed aboard the Enterprise for testing - with disastrous results.

Star Trek: Best Body Swap Episodes

Spock admits that, while computers are useful, they cannot inspire a crew in the same way that a charismatic commanding officer can, no matter how advanced their circuits. It's a point that remains relevant today with the recent artificial intelligence boom , forcing viewers to wonder just how large a part technology should play in their day-to-day lives.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home Friendship Quotes

How we cite our quotes: all quotations are from star trek iv: the voyage home ..

KIRK: Let the record show that [...] the crew of the late starship Enterprise have voted [...] to face the consequences of their actions in the rescue of their comrade, Captain Spock.

The Voyage Home has a unique jumping-off point, as far as Star Trek movies go. The crew of Enterprise isn't in the middle of a five-year mission to explore strange new worlds—they're renegades from Starfleet. And why? They broke just about every law in the book to bring their friend, Spock, back to life in the last movie. Check out the aptly titled The Search for Spock for more on that.

SPOCK: I must go to Earth. To offer testimony. AMANDA: You do this for friendship?

Spock is in a funky state after his whole "resurrection" deal, so he has even less insight into emotions than before. Yikes. Nevertheless, he still feels a sense of loyalty to the crew of Enterprise .

AMANDA: Then you stand here alive because [...] your flawed, feeling human friends [...] believed that the good of the one, you, was more important to them.

Here, Spock's mom reminds him how much his friends sacrificed for him. Though this might seem illogical from his rigid Vulcan perspective, it shows that friendship can be as powerful as a dilithium crystal.

22 Famous Star Trek Quotes that Will Live Forever

If you haven’t watched Star Trek , you’ve at least heard about it. The sci-fi television series created by Gene Roddenberry has earned millions of fans over the years.

Roddenberry was allegedly inspired by Gulliver's Travels and a TV series called Wagon Train to create Star Trek.  Each episode of the series is built as an incredible adventure, but also as a morality tale, considering that the episodes depict cultural realities and conflicts like war and peace, sexism, human rights, religion, economics, loyalty, racism and technology.

A Lasting, Passionate Relationship Isn't Just For Starry-Eyed Romantics—It's For Skeptics Too!

According to award-winning psychotherapist and TV host Dr. Jenn Mann, the #1 reason relationships don't make it past the 1-year mark is because as soon as our relationship doesn't go according to plan, tensions can get so high, the whole relationship crumbles.

"It is easy to get along in the honeymoon phase of a relationship. During the early stages, when we are falling in love, all we see is how alike we are and how wonderful our new partner is. We see our commonalities, not our differences. “You like pizza. I like pizza! We are so alike! We are perfect for each other!” We are merged. We feel like one person, a unit, a “we.” The first time we see our differences, it may feel like a huge betrayal (“What do you mean you voted for him?”), because it marks the moment when we are thrown back into the reality of being two separate people with different thoughts and beliefs." So what about all the people who make it past the honeymoon phase? The "1 year mark"? Does that mean they have it all figured out? Jenn Mann , Instyle

star trek quotes friendship

Relationship goals are more than just whimsical fantasies or Instagram-worthy snapshots; they are the guiding principles that steer a couple toward a fulfilling and harmonious partnership. At their core, relationship goals encompass the shared visions, aspirations, and milestones that both partners aim to achieve together. These goals provide a roadmap for growth, fostering communication, understanding, and mutual respect along the way.

Most importantly, they serve as your relationship-sonar in times of turbulence so you and your co-pilot can navigate the storm together. From building trust and deepening intimacy to navigating challenges as a united front, setting relationship goals cultivates a sense of purpose and commitment that strengthens the bond between partners.

In essence, relationship goals aren't just important—they are the foundation upon which enduring love is built.

How to Get Clear on Your Love Goals

Whether you're in a happily committed relationship, enjoying the thrill of new love, or searching for a partner, setting relationship goals is within everyone's reach. But before we dive into pursuing the love we desire, it's important to have a clear idea of what that love actually looks like.

Some Questions To Ask Yourself

  • What does my ideal, healthy relationships look like?
  • What romantic relationships do I idealize?
  • How would my partner and I stay on the same page or resolve conflict?
  • How do I prefer to receive love from my partner?
  • How would my partner and I best communicate in everyday life?

When it comes to setting relationship goals, it's not one-size-fits-all. Getting a clear picture of what a healthy relationship looks like for you may be vastly different than what it looks like for a friend or a family member.

Don't be afraid to compare notes but try and stay away from comparing goals.

The 8 Most Important Couple Goals To Set And When

First and foremost, relationship goals should be something both you and your partner set together. Setting one-sided couple goals probably isn't the best idea and will likely lead to disappointment. You have to start somewhere—and the best place to start is on the same page.

"When Ryan and I got together, we made a rule not to work at the same time so that we could always prioritize our personal life. That takes working really hard when we're not. Just like financial planning and sustaining that - it takes balance." Blake Lively, Further Ado Podcast

If you're drawing a blank on what an appropriate relationship goal looks like, here are the 8 most important things to know when it comes to making your relationship work.

#1. Understand Each Other's " Love Language "

Counselor, Gary Chapman coined the widely popular theory of the "Five Love Languages". In his work, Chapman found that couples often had difficulty feeling and expressing love (despite their partner's best efforts). So he broke down the themes from these discussions into what's known as the five love languages:

  • Physical touch
  • Quality time
  • Acts of service
  • Words of affirmation.

Chances are, you and your partner don't have the same love language. The chances are even higher that you show your partner love the way you want to receive love. It's a bit of a trap. The problem probably looks a little something like this :

  • After a long work week, you spend hours cooking your partner their all-time favorite meal (acts of service)—the least they could do is wash the dishes (acts of service).
  • Instead, the dishes pile up in the sink while they run over to the TV and put on your favorite movie for a Netflix and cuddle sesh (Quality Time, Physical Touch).
  • Even though their heart's in the right place, you can't enjoy the movie because you're too busy thinking if they really "loved" you...that casserole dish wouldn't be soaking in the sink.

It easy to see why identifying you and your partner's love language is a quick way to get crossed wires, uncrossed. Good news is, "quality time" is one of the most common love languages and it here's a simple hack to get it right.

#2. Commit To A Weekly Date Night — "Don't Stop The Romance"

If there's one thing Suzanne Somers and Alan Hamel knew how to get right—it was romance.

After 55 years together, Somers heartbreakingly passed away in 2023 and fans were overwhelmed by Hamel's masterful letter he wrote to Somers in her final days. He found a way to pack 55 years of love into one last, beautiful, tearjerking punch.

But even though the love of his life would leave him too soon—Hamel and Somers lived with no regrets. They made every moment on earth together count. In rain or shine—dressed up or dressed down—the soulmates famously shared the secret to their marriage:

"Listen to one another, give each other a lot of attention, keep it exciting, date. My marriage is very romantic. … We might sit here and have a tequila. … We dance, I cook, we sit out and watch the moonlight on the ocean." Suzanne Somers

They also reportedly had sex twice a day—but who's counting!

#3. Maintain The Physical Connection

While we may not all have the libido of ThighMaster influencer Suzanne Somers we don't have to! When it comes to setting relationship goals around intimacy don't underestimate the significance of physical touch.

Incorporating consistent physical connection into your relationship offers numerous benefits. Simple gestures like hand-holding, hugs, or a reassuring pat on the shoulder can trigger the release of oxytocin, the "feel-good hormone," while also reducing cortisol levels, the body's stress hormone.

While physical intimacy is undeniably important, it's crucial to understand that it's just one facet of intimacy in a relationship. Intellectual, spiritual, and emotional connections are equally vital. Creating a safe and comfortable environment where both partners understand each other's preferences and boundaries enhances the pleasure derived from physical touch.

However, it's essential to approach physical intimacy with sensitivity and awareness. Attempting to force physical closeness or using it as a substitute for deeper emotional connection can backfire. Achieving a healthy balance in physical touch requires open communication, mutual understanding of body language, and respect for each other's boundaries.

Remember, physical connection encompasses more than just sexual intimacy. From a warm hug in the morning to a sweet kiss goodnight, there are countless ways to express affection and strengthen the bond with your partner.

You don't need to be an expert in massage therapy to reap the benefits of physical touch—simple gestures can go a long way in nurturing intimacy and emotional well-being. So, prioritize physical connections and make them an integral part of your relationship journey.

However, try not to get the purpose of the "love languages" confused. Showing your partner "love" is so important but it's not a substitute for the sometimes hard conversations.

#4. Improve Your Communication

See on Instagram

When it comes to love communication really is key—and miscommunications are one of the first things that can tear a couple apart.

As you’re building your list of goals, an important thing to think about is the way you and your partner communicate. It's easy to make the assumption that our partner knows exactly how we feel–—but assumptions can be deadly to a relationship. No matter how long the two of you have been together, your partner can never know what you truly feel unless you tell them. So prioritize communication.

"If I was going to have an equal voice with this very opinionated man, I had to get myself up." - Michelle Obama, "Becoming"

Understanding how your partner feels and why they think this way is critical to a healthy romantic partnership. Different backgrounds, upbringings and experiences can sometimes make it difficult to see things from our partner's perspective. Make it part of your relationship goals to better understand one another.

If communication is a couple goal you both want to prioritize but have trouble with, seeking the help of a licensed therapist to act as an unbiased evaluator can be a great tool to utilize.

Just ask Barack Obama and Michelle Obama! After 30 years together, the former President and First Lady have openly credited therapy as a huge help in making sure they are always on the same page!

#5. Discuss Your Shared Values And Prepare For Values To Change AS You Grow

TOPSHOT - US actor Ben Affleck kisses US actress and singer Jennifer Lopez as they arrive for the screening of the film "The Last Duel" presented out of competition on September 10, 2021 during the 78th Venice Film Festival at Venice Lido.

One of the biggest miscommunications a couple can have is thinking they have the same values—only to find out, in big relationship-defining moments they couldn't be more wrong. A relationship-defining moment could be when a couple is deciding how they want to raise their children or whether or not they want to get married. This discovery can be devastating. The million-dollar question is, how do you avoid it?

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are great examples of a Hollywood "it" couple who had miscommunications and learned from it. "Bennifer" didn't make it the first time around—and the exes went on to raise their children in very different ways—with Lopez opting for a more lavish Miami lifestyle and Affleck keeping it low-key in LA. So what changed? What made this couple reunite years later?

Did the stars align? Or did they just get clear on their shared values?

Though the two went their separate ways in 2004, 17 years later they resurrected one of Hollywood’s favorite romances. After being spotted on multiple loved-up outings and at red-carpet appearances together, they were finally married in 2023. But before they tied the knot the couple made it a priority to talk about what mattered and how this time was going to be different.

In an exclusive sit down with VOGUE, Lopez shared how the second time around was even better than the first. They had years to mature and become full-formed individuals. When they reunited they were no longer "two halves" struggling to make a whole. They were two whole people coming together who put their shared family values first, instead of their careers.

He’s a wonderful, wonderful father and father figure to them as well, ’cause he has his own three beautiful children and then there’s us. He’s fantastic. He really steps up to the challenge of what [being a stepfather] is and what that means, and they love him." Jennifer Lopez, VOGUE (2023)

Lopez and Affleck's story is a revealing reminder of the significance of aligning with a partner who shares your values, particularly when envisioning a future together. While initial discussions about important topics such as living arrangements, family planning, and career aspirations may lay the foundation for a strong connection, it's crucial to recognize that values can evolve over time.

Continual communication about evolving priorities and aspirations is essential for maintaining harmony and alignment within the relationship. Whether it's a shift in living preferences or a newfound desire to establish roots in a specific location, addressing these changes openly and honestly fosters understanding and prevents potential conflicts down the road.

If identifying your and your partner's values may feel too broad, here are the 7 most important "core values " according to psychotherapist and celebrity relationship guru, Esther Perel.

  • Communication : Keeping open lines of communication with your partner can set you up to have a successful relationship. The busyness of life can make it challenging for couples to keep one another informed. However, maintaining a clear back-and-forth of information is the only way to ensure the relationship will be sustainable.
  • Equality : Seeing each other as equals fosters mutual respect. This can create a deeper emotional connection and create greater intimacy between you and your partner.
  • Honesty : Honesty and trust go hand in hand. Being honest with your loved one allows you to build a healthy relationship. Without honesty, the foundation of the relationship can falter and lead to heartbreak.
  • Intimacy : Take time for physical and emotional intimacy. You should not ignore a healthy sex life, frequent displays of affection, and date nights.
  • Shared beliefs : Religious beliefs can play a significant part in a person’s life. Though religious differences do not always signal a deal-breaker, having shared beliefs can make navigating through life together, especially if parenting, easier.
  • Trust : Every good relationship needs a foundation of trust. Relationship experts claim trust is the most important value of every successful relationship. Without trust, romantic relationships quickly deteriorate.
  • Validation : Emotional validation is the process of making your partner feel understood. Ensure you acknowledge their points of view and emotions. Emotional validation provides mental health benefits and is a healthy way to care for your partner's well-being.

While it's highly unlikely you and your partner will share all values, you and your partner must have at least 3-5 of these values in common.

#6. Support One Another—No Matter What"Always supporting me (literally)"

The #1 most important shared values a couple needs to have, is family values. David Beckham and Victoria Beckham may just be the best example when it comes to demonstrating how powerful supporting your partner can be (literally)! After all, you're not just building a life together...you're building your forever family.

Even though celebs are stars in their own right—over 25 years together have proven the power couple are partners in work and in life. The couple share four children: Brooklyn , 24, Romeo , 21, Cruz , 19, and Harper Seven , 11.

In their widely successful Netflix doc, Beckham , The Beckhams unpack years of their life together. The ups (winning a World Cup), the downs (the cheating scandal that nearly broke them), and everything in between!

The power couple may lead crazy busy lives but it's never stopped them from making sure family comes first.

"Running a business [and] most importantly, being a mum, wouldn't be possible without David. Not only is he the most incredible father, but he's supportive and someone who loves and inspires me every single day." Victoria Beckham, Glamour Women of the Year Award.

The bottom line is—if you're putting them before you and they are putting you before them, you have the best chance for success. But supporting your partner can look different depending on the situation. It's not about blindly agreeing to everything they say. Sometimes it looks like challenging their beliefs to help them grow

#7. Fight Fair—Be A "Master Negotiator"

Disagreements in relationships are inevitable. How delicately a couple navigates conflicts can make or break a relationship. So that's why if you're going to fight, fight fair. Or in other words: compromise!

"I think everybody needs to be a negotiator. Everybody needs to have patience and know when to take a walk." James Brolin, PEOPLE

After 25 years of marriage to the legendary diva Barbra Streisand, it should go without saying that Brolin knows a thing or two about conflict resolution. His advice couldn't be more spot on.

RELATED: Barbra Streisand and James Brolin’s Advice for a Successful Marriage Is Seriously Simple

Research suggests that "happy couples" avoid criticism, steer clear of extreme language, and prevent arguments from escalating through joint problem-solving.

If you know your partner shuts down when things get heated, don't push their boundaries and force them to give you answers. Step back. Give them space to think. Or in James Brolin's words let them "take a walk."

Fighting fair can look like this:

  • Knowing how your partner's conflict resolution style may differ from your own
  • Respecting your partner's boundaries
  • Making your needs known

If this all sounds like a lot—one simple trick to remember when you're in a heated debate with your partner is to avoid starting a sentence with "you always..." or "you never..."!

Do they always leave the toilet seat up? They never take out the garbage?

Probably not. But the truth is, remembering this when we're "seeing red" can feel impossible. In the middle of a fight—the #1 most important thing to remember is this—what outcome do we really want after passions cool and the fight is over?

Do we want to hurt or do we want to heal?

#8. Manage Your Emotions—Don't Forget You Want The Same Outcome!

It shouldn't come as a surprise that effective communication is critical for a healthy relationship, but just because this goal is simple—doesn't mean it's easy.

When we have a problem with our partner it can be tempting to "outsource" for advice. We may call our mom or a best friend. We swear we're "just venting," but a lot of the time what we are looking for is advice.

That's not always a bad thing! But it can be a slippery slope (especially when you're not dealing with a licensed professional).

We can be quick to tell everyone what our problem with our partner is...except our partner!

That's why after over 30 years of marriage to Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker's best piece of advice is to "keep things just between the two of you".

RELATED: Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick’s Advice to a Lasting Marriage Is One Very Simple ‘Secret’

Asking outside opinions can distract us from dealing with the real problem. We can't expect someone to change if they don't know what is going on with us, right?

If Your Partner Calls You The More "Emotional" One...

If your partner calls you the more "emotional" one, when problems arise, you're probably pretty reactive. Chances are you read into every little action and behavior—when they seem "distant" you take it personally.

The "emotional one" is the person pacing in the living room, interrogating their partner who sits silently on the couch cross-armed. It's confusing. The more you try to "communicate"—the more they shut down.

But remember facts are not feelings! Sometimes when you think you're communicating—you're not. You may phrase your insecurities like a question—but really you're making a statement.

For Example: In a tense car ride after leaving your mother-in-law's house you may ask your partner, "Why do you never stand up for me?" Even though it's phrased like a question it's not. You're telling them they never stand up for you. It makes sense they may get defensive or shut down completely.

That's not a conversation. That's a confrontation.

If you're a volcanic eruption of emotions all your partner is going to want to do is step on rocks to dodge the hot lava!

Conflict Resolution Tip: For The "Emotional Ones"

Try taking a beat and not being so reactive. Breathe and ask yourself if the big emotions you're experiencing are rooted in reality. Then sit with it for a few days.

If you're still feeling you have something you need to say, then say it!

Your partner may get defensive but trust they will come around—because they want your relationship to work too. Don't jump on every little word they say. Wait it out. Actively listen instead of waiting for what you want to hear.

Don't take their pace personally. Just because you may want to "fix" the problem right away, doesn't mean it's always the right answer.

If Your Partner Calls You The More "Emotionally Unavailable" One...

For the "emotionally unavailable" ones, communicating looks completely different.

Unlike their partners, the "emotionally unavailable" ones tend to suppress and detach from their relationship conflicts. This can lead to big miscommunications that eventually push their partner away in the long run—which isn't what they want!

If the "Emotional" partner seems to care too much— the "emotionally unavailable" partner doesn't seem to care at all. However no matter how convincing their act may be, this isn't the truth.

The emotionally unavailable partner wants to be seen and heard too. They just don't know how to process their feelings at the same rate! The "emotional" partner has a tendency to take over the conversation and leave little room for the "emotionally unavailable" partner to process their feelings and say their piece.

So instead, they shut down. But what these personality types don't understand is their partner wants to hear how they feel. They just have a hard time asking instead of guessing.

RELATED: HOW YOUR ATTACHMENT STYLE AFFECTS YOUR RELATIONSHIP

Once you can identify why this caused you to feel a certain way, try and get into these habits:

  • Talk to loved ones about what they’re feeling
  • Write down what you think and feel
  • Try meditation or therapy
  • Exercise to relieve stress and increase endorphins
  • Practice being aware of their thoughts when they’re emotional
  • Remove themselves from an emotional situation if it is becoming uncontrollable

Don't be afraid to discuss these goals with your partner. It's about progress not perfection. They just want reassurance that you care. Don't be afraid to ask for them to work on their emotional regulation too.

These sorts of goals are often best met when both parties are working together, and often key components of a more lasting love.

If nothing else remember: it's not a confrontation, it's a conversation!

How to set goals: a normal and healthy part of a relationship.

You understand why it's essential to set goals in a healthy and thriving relationship and have a few couple goals in mind that you'd like to discuss with your partner. Now it's time to sit down and have a conversation. Here are a few tips for setting relationship goals with your significant other.

  • Choose a neutral space to discuss relationship goals
  • Determine the length of time for each relationship goal
  • Set check-in dates for each relationship goal
  • Include at least one fun relationship goal
  • Make sure your relationship goals are measurable
  • Evaluate how your love goals make you feel
  • Make sure your couple goals are equally weighted

Don't just set and forget your goals. Consistency is key. Achieving goals requires ongoing work from both you and your partner.

It Works If You Work It—Because You're Worth It!

Setting relationship goals takes time and effort – but the payoff is worth it. Even if you decide to start small, setting couple goals will undoubtedly yield a stronger relationship.

However it's important to remember while there is no shame in working on your relationship don't mistake setting goals with trying to change your partner. Sadly, sometimes when a relationship has soured it's a case of not-meant-to-be that all the self-help books in the world can't fix.

However, if you're merely ironing out the wrinkles with the right person and you both share aligned love goals, you'll have a clear pathway for achieving them and a means of assessing your relationship goals as you move forward. It's important to keep in mind that working towards relationship goals should be a positive endeavor – something that feels rewarding and enjoyable.

"Every woman in her late 20s goes through a period where she just doesn't believe love is out there anymore, but it is. And I think the minute you stop looking for it is when it comes for you." Kristen Bell

With the right tools, effort and mindset, you can use relationship goals to build the future you want with your partner.

Star Trek: Spock's 15 Best Quotes, Ranked

Spock is one of the most notable figures within the Star Trek franchise, and his philosophy on life and logic brings timeless wisdom to all.

Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek : The Original Series introduced excited science-fiction fans to the iconic duo Spock and Kirk . Often at odds with one another because of how vastly their point of view differed, Spock's logic paired well with Kirk's impetuous nature, provoking thoughtful commentary and hilarious banter. There was a definite sense of balance between them, with each man poised at opposite sides of the spectrum, but they almost always found common ground when necessary.

Leonard Nimoy's portrayal of the half-human, half-Vulcan was iconic. Spock paved the way for the creation of numerous characters as the Star Trek franchise began to expand. His influence over the development of the android artificial intelligence Data (Brent Spiner) in The Next Generation is clear in Data's curiosity about human nature. He can be seen also be seen in Voyager 's holo-physician, The Doctor (Robert Picardo), who employed an acerbic bedside manner and logic for problem-solving the crew sometimes lacked. Deep Space 9 's changeling Chief of Security, Odo (Rene Aubergenois), carried himself with a similar sense of rigidity. While each of them shared personality traits with Spock, one of the most prominent similarities they shared was the perspective of an outsider--always viewing humanity, judging and trying to understand its nature.

With Leonard Nimoy's passing, his legacy as Spock carries on through actors like Zachary Quinto and Ethan Peck. Quinto gave voice to Vulcan logic in the Star Trek reboot films directed by J.J. Abrams, while Peck portrays young Spock in Discovery and Strange New Worlds . Nimoy set the foundation, establishing an unforgettable character who spoke volumes on the nature of humanity over the years.

Spock's unique view on life, humanity, and most especially his fellow crew mates sometimes led to strained relationships. Therein lay his deepest observations and wittiest banter. Spock fought hard to deny the human side of his nature, and all too often his read on the people around him only furthered his desire to forget that despite being raised on Vulcan, he was still part-human himself.

15 "It is more rational to sacrifice one life than six, Doctor."

Logic and rationale were at the forefront of everything Spock adhered to, which often made it hard for the people around him to relate. It was easy for him to make judgment calls that would give others pause as they weighed it all out because in his mind the right answer was always the logical one. Even when it came to having to sacrifice lives, he was quick to point out something that would become a standard Star Trek philosophy: the needs of the many far outweigh the needs of the few or the one.

It is a logical observation, to be sure, but in the 1967 episode "The Galileo 7," Dr. McCoy can't wrap his head around Spock's rational response. What McCoy more than likely struggled with was how quick and easy it was for Spock to decide another's fate, even it was rational.

14 "I am frequently appalled by the low regard you Earthmen have for life."

In that same 1967 episode that provoked Spock's quick reaction to saving the many over the one, he also made note of how appalling he found the human disregard for life itself. This prompted an eventual debate about their responsibility to weigh all components before making rash judgments and decisions when his crewmates Gaetano and Boma suggest destroying the antropoids that have stranded them. This episode provided a lot of insight into how the people Spock worked with every day viewed him. They found his cold rationale to be unnerving, but in the end, he made the most sound decisions to display his respect for life as a whole.

13 "Evil does seem to maintain power by suppressing the truth."

When Spock and the crew bring a group of children suffering from amnesia aboard the Enterprise in Season 3, Episode 4, "And the Children Shall Lead," McCoy discovers that they've all blocked out the details of specific events, including what happened to their parents. While trying to make sense of not only what happened, but why those specific memories were wiped, Spock recognizes evil's inclination to avoid outright lying by withholding information entirely. So long as those they wish to control don't know all the facts, they will go on believing whatever they are told.

After the children become possessed by the dark spirit that destroyed their lives, Spock shows them footage of what really happened. Learning the truth broke the entity's hold over them, allowing them to finally grieve for what they'd lost. This is definitely a piece of wisdom that carries over into the world, encouraging everyone to seek the truth and find the facts before committing to another's beliefs or will.

12 "Vulcans never bluff."

In the 1966 episode " The Doomsday Machine ," Spock finds himself pushed out of the command position Kirk left him in when he refuses to attack a massive planet killer. Decker, the man who took over, eventually provoked Spock's ire after Kirk found out what was going on. Insisting that Decker step down, he challenges Spock's authority and accuses him of bluffing. Spock's claim that Vulcans don't bluff may be somewhat exaggerated, but their reputation for keeping a cool head in the face of adversity certainly makes his words believable. There's a chance he was bluffing, but how would one actually know?

11 "...The female capacity to avoid a direct answer to any question."

The 1960s were a much different time, but Star Trek did attempt to at least given women equal opportunities aboard the Enterprise. On the other hand, the show often portrayed them in a narrow minded light. Like Spock noting his failure to understand why it was so hard for women to directly answer a question when asked. At the time, a joke like that might be easily overlooked as just women and those pesky feminine wiles of theirs. Today it wouldn't stand. Spock may have been half-Vulcan, but his half-human side didn't always prevent him from adopting a poor view on females.

10 "Captain, you almost make me believe in luck."

Luck is entirely illogical, according to Spock. Those who put their stock in luck are asking to be let down, but Captain Kirk's quick wit and ability to find his way out of a tight spot are often inspired. Even Spock can't help but admire the captain, confessing that the ease with which he solves a major problem in Season 1, Episode 23, "A Taste of Armageddon," is almost enough to make him believe in the possibility of luck itself.

9 "If I were human, I believe my response would be 'Go to hell'."

In Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , Spock finds himself questioning whether age has made him and Kirk too rigid and set in their ways to be useful. When Uhura tells him that they are to return the Enterprise to dock, so she can be decommissioned, he lets himself give in to his human side by telling authority to go to hell. Even after all those years out there among the stars, Spock still struggled to accept that a part of him was human, clinging almost desperately to his Vulcan half. This rare moment in which he relents is proof enough that neither he nor Kirk are too old to keep going as long as it takes.

8 "Logic is the beginning of wisdom. Not the end."

Another bit of wisdom from the 1991 film, The Undiscovered Country , Spock finds himself face to face with his own Vulcan apprentice, Valeris, who turns out to be an assassin working against the Enterprise. Much of the original Star Trek saw Starfleet in constant, tense negotiations with the Klingons. Given their nature, Valeris didn't believe peace with them to be logical, and given the Klingon nature, perhaps her viewpoint was logical. But as Spock pointed out, logic is just the beginning when it comes to making wise decisions. One can't rely on that alone to determine outcomes.

7 "It is the lot of man to strive, no matter how content he is."

Even in the proposed future, with humankind out gallivanting among the stars, Spock observes their ever-present sense of ambition. No matter how far humanity comes, or how much they achieve, there is a constant push to do more, receive more, and strive for more. Perhaps slowing down and taking stock in one's contentment would grant a new perspective, one in which they don't need to strive ever onward, but it's hard to imagine. Humanity reached for the stars and grasped onto them, but there must be more and they will find it.

6 "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few."

As mentioned previously, this philosophy became a focal point for Star Trek as a whole. No matter where the journey takes a crew, they will always face situations that require this reminder. The number of people out there among the stars who are perfectly content to destroy an entire world or system to save just one person is greater than one might imagine. The idea of losing a single loved one is painful, but setting aside that pain and embracing logic has the power to preserve the continued growth and expansion of life overall.

5 "Insufficient facts always invite danger."

Kirk didn't become captain because he was impetuous, but he did have a tendency to charge in first and ask questions later. Fortunately, he had Spock by his side to remind him to take care. Charging into a situation without all the facts is dangerous. While Kirk may like to laugh in the face of danger, it's definitely been a source of trouble for him throughout his career. It likely would have been a lot worse if not for Spock.

4 "Men sometimes see exactly what they wish to see."

In the most critical moments, it's far too easy to overlook what's right there and see what one wants instead. How often did Spock see only what he wanted to see? Perhaps while looking in the mirror, seeing only the Vulcan side of himself, ignoring the human.

Despite his wise observations on human nature, Spock had flaws of his own. It would be easy for him to see his humanity reflected in his faults, but a good many of them boiled down to his Vulcan nature. It would be difficult, if not impossible, for him to ever admit that.

3 "It is curious how often you humans manage to obtain..."

Spock isn't the only living being to observe how often humans wind up getting exactly what they don't want. He noted how curious it seemed, "How often you humans manage to obtain that which you do not want." It goes hand in hand with humanity's lot in life to strive. In some ways, it's an afterthought on being "careful what you wish for," though it's likely Spock would note that wishes had nothing to do with the outcome.

2 "One man cannot summon the future..."

Mankind spends a lot of time thinking about the future, wishing it would hurry up and start happening now. But that's as illogical as it is impossible. While there are definitely some parallels between Vulcan logic and Zen philosophy, Spock's advice is about as Zen as it comes. "One man cannot summon the future, but one man can change the present." If things aren't going the way one wants, looking to the future won't make change happen. Focusing on the moment, the now, is the only way to provoke the changes one wants to see in their life.

1 "Live long and prosper."

Of the many logical and wise things Spock said over his many years in Starfleet, the one he remains most remembered for are the words spoken with the Vulcan salute. Hand raised, middle and ring fingers parted in a V, it almost always accompanied the words, "Live long and prosper." Translated into Vulcan, the phrase, " dif-tor heh smusma ," is often coupled with the words, "peace and long life".

It wasn't Spock, or even Leonard Nimoy, who originally coined the phrase. The inspiration came from a number of places, including an old Egyptian blessing, the Bible, William Shakespeare, and Stephen Crane. These days, when people hear those words the first person who comes to mind is Spock, and given the impact his character has had on generations of Trekkies, chances are that isn't going to change anytime soon.

After a day of wide-ranging talks and a joint news conference, President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden welcomed Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and wife Yuko Kishida back to the White House Wednesday evening for a lavish state dinner.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida cracked jokes and invoked a touchstone of American culture as he quoted from “Star Trek” at Wednesday’s state dinner , telling guests at the White House that he hoped the “unshakable relationship” between his country and the U.S. would “boldly go where no one had gone before.”

“I would like to propose a toast to our voyage to the frontier of the Japan-U.S. relationship with this word: boldly go,” Kishida said, quoting the iconic opening monologue of the original “Star Trek” series.

Kishida, who spoke in English, and President Joe Biden exchanged warm toasts to each other and the decades-long, alliance between their nations as top figures from business, sports and politics — including an ex-president — looked on. The two leaders, who expressed a genuine friendship, pledged to continue to knit together their countries’ interests in the face of global challenges.

Biden , 81, said he and Kishida, 66, came of age as their countries forged a strong bond in the decades after they were pitted against each other in World War II.

“We both remember the choices that were made to forge a friendship,” Biden said. “We both remember the hard work, what it has done to find healing.”

“Tonight,” Biden continued, “We pledge to keep going.”

As the White House served up a maximum dose of pomp to honor its close U.S. ally, notable guests included Bill and Hillary Clinton, who were on familiar turf for the event. The former president declared it “feels great” to be back before casting an appreciative eye at a portrait of his wife from her first lady days that was on display nearby.

Guests in bright spring colors and lots of shimmery gowns chatted politics and talked shop as they strolled in — that meant eclipse chatter from NASA Administrator Bill Nelson (“fabulous” view in Ohio!) and an assessment of Biden’s electoral prospects in Wisconsin from Gov. Tony Evers (looking good!).

But on a day when the inflation news from Washington was less than encouraging, Federal Reserve Chairman Jay Powell shot past reporters without stopping to chat. Olympic figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, in a purple gown, said she didn’t expect to be out campaigning for Biden but nonetheless seemed bullish on his reelection. Actor Robert De Niro supplied the night’s Hollywood quotient and seemed to channel one of his tough-talking characters when he was asked for his thoughts about the 2024 election.

“What do you think?” he retorted.

On a warm spring evening, the Bidens came stepped onto the North Portico to welcome Kishida and his wife, Yuko, who stood out in a flowing royal blue gown on the red carpet.

Inside, Jill Biden , wearing a beaded sapphire gown, had transformed the State Floor of the White House into what she called a “vibrant spring garden” for the evening. The floor of the famous Cross Hall was decorated with images giving the nearly 230 guests the feel of walking over a koi pond, a nod to fish that symbolize “friendship, peace, luck and perseverance,” the first lady said at a media preview Tuesday.

Guests at the head table with the Bidens and Kishidas included the Clintons, De Niro and Japanese pop duo Yoasobi.

Kishida, in his toast at the dinner, enthused over the splendor.

“First and foremost, to be honest my breath is taken and I’m speechless in front of such a huge number of prominent American and Japanese guests,” he said.

A state dinner is a tool of U.S. diplomacy, an honor doled out sparingly and only to America’s closest allies. In the case of Japan, the president has granted that honor for just the fifth time to an ally that he sees as a cornerstone of his policy toward the Indo-Pacific region.

Kishida is on an official visit to the United States this week. The state dinner is Biden’s first this year.

The guests included plenty of Biden family members, including granddaughter Naomi and her husband, Peter Neal. Business moguls also were in force, including JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Labor luminaries United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain and United Steelworkers President David McCall were also in attenddance. Both unions have endorsed Biden for reelection.

Dry-aged rib eye steak, cherry blossoms and the music of Paul Simon were also part of the evening. Simon opened his after-dinner performance by playing guitar and singing two of his major hits, “Graceland” and “Slip Slidin’ Away.”

Guests dined on a meal that was designed to highlight the “bounty of spring” in Japan and the United States: a first course of house-cured salmon that was inspired by a California roll and an entree of rib eye with shishito pepper butter, fava beans, mushrooms and onions. Dessert was salted caramel pistachio cake with a matcha ganache and cherry ice cream.

Some of Jill Biden’s favorite flowers, including sweet peas, roses and peonies, were arranged alongside imported cherry blossoms to decorate a mix of round and rectangular dinner tables in the East Room in shades of pink. A few floral centerpieces topped out at 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall.

Tables were set with a mix of place settings representing the administrations of Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and George W. Bush. Glass and silk butterflies danced over the tables.

Simon is one of Jill Biden’s favorite artists, the White House said, adding that she chose him as a special tribute to Kishida because the prime minister also admires his music.

Simon’s career spans six decades, including performing as part of a duo with his childhood friend Art Garfunkel. The 82-year-old New Jersey native has earned numerous accolades, including multiple Grammys and a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Kishida is the fifth world leader Biden has honored with a state dinner following counterparts from France , South Korea , India and Australia .

Strange new worlds actors reveal cut star trek musical finale moment & why spock dances.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Ethan Peck, Celia Rose Gooding, and Christina Chong drop some BTS about the musical episode's grand finale number.

  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' musical episode concludes with a grand finale showcasing the power of unity and camaraderie among the crew.
  • Lt. Spock's logical decision to dance in the musical finale helps boost subspace rift's 'improbability levels,' aiding the crew in saving the galaxy.
  • A bonding moment between Uhura and La'an highlights the ensemble's support for each other, showcasing a sense of solidarity and friendship, but it was cut from the episode.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' Celia Rose Gooding and Christina Chong reveal a cut moment from the finale of the first-ever Star Trek musical, and Ethan Peck explains why Lt. Spock decided to dance in the closing musical number, "We Are One." Strange New Worlds season 2's acclaimed musical episode, "Subspace Rhapsody," was written by Dana Horgan and Bill Wolkoff and directed by Dermot Downs. All of the songs were composed by Kay Hanley and Tom Polce from Letters to Cleo. The musical required the entire cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to sing and dance, and everyone embraced the musical with gusto.

In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' musical episode, a subspace rift created a reality defined by the rules of musicals that threatened to engulf the entire galaxy. Meanwhile, aboard the USS Enterprise, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew unwittingly express their deepest feelings and emotions through songs. Ensign Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) deduced that to close the subspace rift, the crew of the Enterprise needed to perform a grand finale, and every single person aboard the starship joined in for the big finish musical number, "We Are One."

Star Trek Strange New Worlds Musical Episode Ending Explained

Star trek: strange new worlds' musical cut a moment from the grand finale, celia rose gooding explains a missing moment from the musical episode..

In an interview with TV Insider, Celia Rose Gooding and Christina Chong reveal that there was a bonding moment between Ensign Nyota Uhura and Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh that was cut from the final version of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' musical episode 's finale number, "We Are One." Read their quotes below:

Celia Rose Gooding: La’an and Uhura had a little handshake moment that we made up on the spot. Christina Chong: We did! Celia Rose Gooding: We did, but that didn’t make it. But in my mind, there was something so beautiful about that after we finished the song. Our instinct was first to just celebrate one another, and then get back to work. I think that is such a nod to our routine as an ensemble to just check on each other and really boost each other up because we’re doing something that some characters are not super comfortable with and that isn’t their instinct to burst out into song. And so that final moment of camaraderie - of course, it had to be shrunk down for the nature of TV - but in my perfect world, there’s an edit of five minutes of everyone just giving each other compliments.

"We Are One" was a catharsis for the crew of the Starship Enterprise. For La'an, the Strange New Worlds musical's finale reaffirmed her decision to be more open with her feelings, even after her confession that she is attracted to Lt. James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) didn't go as she had hoped. Meanwhile, Uhura realized that her role in keeping the crew of the Enterprise connected was a gift, and it empowered her to save the ship. Both La'an and Uhura shed their old inhibitions and took steps forward to becoming happier people .

Why Spock Dances In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Musical Finale

Ethan peck knew spock would only dance when it was logical to dance..

Ethan Peck also explained Lt. Spock's decision to dance in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' grand finale, "We Are One." Peck, who understands Spock like Leonard Nimoy did , needed a logical justification for Spock to dance , and he found out. Read Peck's quote below:

Ethan Peck: There was a moment there in that finale where life really imitated art. I mean, that happens so frequently, but never so closely together as in that moment. Spock doesn’t get to participate because, obviously, he doesn’t want to be dancing. I spoke with Dermot, the director, about it. How would Spock dance? Well, I guess he has to to get that meter maxed out so we can break out of the musical reality. And he would do it for that, and so he joins in for the very end of it. So I felt like kind of an outsider. I join in at the very end of that whole sequence. And then Chapel and Spock are sort of on rough terms, and I remember its ending. We had this joyous moment, and then we have kind of a broody look to each other. So my experience was a little bit different from some of the other cast members.

Lt. Spock dancing in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' musical finale did boost the subspace rift's 'improbability levels ', and helped put the Starship Enterprise crew over the top. Unlike Uhura and La'an's moment, the final cut of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' musical included the awkward moment between Spock and Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) after the couple ended their relationship through song. What happens next between Spock, Chapel, and the crew of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 remains to be seen, although it won't include another musical episode. (At least not in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3.)
