Customers demand refunds after Steve Harvey’s Sand & Soul Festival is canceled

    NASHVILLE ( WSMV ) — What was supposed to be a fun vacation in the Dominican Republic with a well-known comedian turned out to be not so funny.

Steve Harvey’s Sand & Soul Festival promised party-goers the time of their lives, but instead, customers said the trip got canceled and they never got a refund.

Sandra Glover couldn’t wait to get on the trip and party in the sun with Harvey, a popular comedian and game show host.

“We’ve never been before, so we decided we were going to take a girls’ trip and go to the festival and hang out in the Dominican Republic,” Glover said.

Glover said she paid over $1,400 for the first of four payments, but that lavish vacation in the sand set for Labor Day 2020 quickly went to dust.

The pandemic postponed the trip, then organizers canceled it all together. But months later, Glover still can’t get money back.

“There was no website. The website was taken down,” Glover said.

She’s not alone.

“They’re not responding to your emails and no one is answering the phone calls in the office either,” ShaDonna Middleton said.

Middleton, who lives in the Atlanta area, is having the same problem – no trip and no money back.

“Pay us back our money that we have put into this trip because at this point, sometimes I feel like you’re living off the money I gave you, and others,” Middleton said.

News4 Investigates found several other customers in the same boat.

The NBC affiliate in Chicago interviewed multiple people desperately trying to get their refunds. The investigation led us from Nashville to Atlanta.

When News4 visited the Steve Harvey Sand & Soul Festival office, no one was there at the moment.

Brandon R. Williams of Steve Harvey Global issued an email statement:

“We are in the process of refunding customers their deposits for Sand & Soul. We have already refunded approximately $300,000 back to hundreds of customers and all customers that are due refunds will be repaid. I have made the event management company that is processing the refunds aware of the fact that the individuals that you are reporting should be placed at the top of the queue. I would anticipate that their refunds will be processed within the next 1-2 weeks.”

Middleton and Glover hope that’s true because both women said this entire experience, one that was supposed to bring joy and memories with their favorite comedian, is no laughing matter anymore.

“We do make mistakes, but can you please own up to your mistakes,” Middleton said.

Both ladies said the experience leaves a bad taste in their mouths, but they still love Steve Harvey. All they want is some transparency.

• Steve Harvey's Sand and Soul Festival is moving to the Moon Palace Resort in Cancun, Mexico amid concerns over US tourist deaths at all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic, INSIDER confirmed Thursday.
• The festival was initially set to take place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Punta Cana in October.

The festival announced last week that it was changing locations, citing "a lot of negative media in the recent weeks surrounding the Dominican Republic and its safety for tourists to travel."

Steve Harvey's Sand & Soul festival is moving locations to Cancun from the Dominican Republic amid concerns over US tourist deaths at all-inclusive resorts .

The third-annual  Steve Harvey Sand and Soul Festival  was set to take place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Punta Cana, in October — but an email seen by INSIDER shows festival organizers announcing it will now be held at the Moon Palace Resort in Cancun, Mexico.

"We know this change has been a lot to process, but Mr. Harvey and our entire staff appreciate your patience and your trust in us to provide you with a stellar experience," the email said. "This new resort is in no way a 'downgrade' and we can't wait to show you a fabulous time."

NBC 5 Responds: Complaints Mount Over Steve Harvey's Canceled Caribbean Party

NBC 5 Responds has heard from nearly a dozen Steve Harvey fans seeking refunds for tickets they purchased for the 2020 Steve Harvey Sand & Soul Festival in the Dominican Republic, which was canceled in late August.

“I want my refund.  That’s basically it” says Ronie Spencer.

Spencer is far from alone.  

The weekend getaway, slated for Sept. 3-7, was officially canceled on Aug. 28. More than six weeks later, requests for refunds remain unanswered. 

“Everyone who is requesting a refund, who has paid money for this trip for 2020 should be entitled to a refund, and people should not have to go through the to the length of contacting a television news station to get some redress to this,” Scorns Gail says.

Gail, along with her friends, Ronie, Debra and Pamela all bought tickets to the Caribbean party this year, after staying at the same Cancun hotel where it was held last year.  

 “They (fans) were coming in for that year’s Sand and Soul festival. Okay, and they just kept saying how wonderful it was and we should try to make it again this year,” says Debra.

The four retired friends travel around the world together. From South Africa, Belize and Israel, they were excited to add a stamp from the Dominican Republic to their passport. Additionally, it was a chance to party with one of their favorite celebrities, comedian Steve Harvey. 

 “We all love Steve Harvey. Seen him on TV. He's so trustworthy warm and friendly he has a reputation. Everybody knows him.  I never thought that it would come to this, never,” says Pam. 

The four friends reached out to NBC 5 Responds after seeing our first story that aired on Sept. 3, when we introduced you to Genelle, Jemille, Jeanetta, Cortney, Tracy and Veronica, six women who were all desperately trying to get ahold of anyone from the Sand & Soul team about refunds. 

 “They don’t answer the phone, they don’t answer emails, they don’t answer messages.  I’ve tried everything I could to get in contact with them,” Jeanetta told NBC 5 Responds.

NBC 5 Responds made several attempts to get answers from the Steve Harvey Sand & Soul event organizers.  We finally heard from the COO Brandon Williams of Steve Harvey Global, who thanked NBC 5 Responds for bringing the matter to his attention and pledged to ensure “…that the individuals that are due refunds, will be made whole.”  

Since that response on Sept. 2, none of the women say they have received their refunds.   

NBC 5 Responds followed up and was told by Williams on Oct. 5 that the funds for the refunds (over $15k) were wired from Steve Harvey Global to the Event Organizer, as that was necessary in order to properly process the individual refunds last week. 

“I was just made aware of the fact that for some reason (of which I am presently unaware) that the refunds were not processed, as was instructed to the Event Organizer.  Like you, I am trying to get to the bottom of what has happened in this specific instance,” Williams told NBC 5 Responds.
