A word of caution though: your bucket list is sure to get a whole lot longer…

Best Travel Destinations For Couples Who Love Nature

Yellowstone National Park

Covering nearly 4 million square miles, and unifying 50 different states, the US has lots to offer travel loving couples, especially those who love nature.

There are 58 National Parks across America, some more famous than others, but all are stunning and beautiful in their own rights.

Whether you choose to visit one of the most well known parks like Yellowstone, Grand Canyon or Yosemite, or some of the lesser known ones, such as Great Basin in Nevada or the Volcano National Park in Hawaii , you’re sure to escape into a world of incredible natural beauty wherever you go.

Banff National Park

Similarly to the USA, Canada is also vast in size and home to over 45 National Parks.

Some of the most spectacular nature spots in Canada include popular Niagara Falls in Ontario, stunning Banff National Park in Alberta and practically anywhere throughout British Columbia’s coastal and mountainous regions.

Be sure to look out for moose, bears and the Northern Lights throughout your Canadian adventure!

Plitvice Or Krka: Which Is Most Worth Visiting

Whether you enjoy relaxing beach trips, underwater adventures or day hikes, Croatia in the Baltics is home to a lot of natural beauty.

Perhaps one of the most popular (and beautiful) natural spots in Croatia is UNESCO World Heritage Site, Plitvice National Park. Here, you’ll find gushing waterfalls, woodland walks and tranquil lakes.

Other top nature spots in Croatia include Krka National Park, which is also home to magnificent waterfalls, as well as the Southern Dalmatian islands and the coastal city of Split.

Views of Porto Moniz from afar

The tiny Portuguese archipelago of Madeira is not most traveller’s first choice when it comes to nature travel, or any type of travel when it comes to it.

And yet – with year-round spring-like temperatures , mountainous viewpoints, volcanic rock pools and an interesting culture – it’s hard to understand why.

Some of the best nature spots and top things to do in Madeira include the Laurissilva forest, Queimadas Forest Park, the volcanic rock pools at Porto Moniz, Pico do Arieiro and the levada walks.

At just 309.3 square miles, it’s really easy to see the best of Madeira in just 1 or 2 weeks by car. However, it can be quite challenging to drive in Madeira. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to get around Madeira , such as frequent coach tours and an easy to use bus network.

Iceland Sunset

Home to towering waterfalls, sprawling volcanic fields and bubbling hot springs , Iceland is swiftly becoming one of the world’s most popular nature travel destinations.

The most popular spots can usually be found within Iceland’s Golden Circle , which makes them easy to see and get to by car or as part of a group tour.

These include Thingvellir National Park , Gullfoss and the Geysir Hot Spring Area.

But you should also make an effort to head to the south coast in search of incredible waterfalls and black sand beaches.

6. New Zealand

Milky Way

Covering two large islands and over 100,000 square miles, New Zealand is quite possibly one of the most heavily sought after destinations for outdoor adventures and nature travel.

While you can explore glow worm caves, heavenly beaches, natural hot springs and New Zealand’s largest lake on the North Island, the South Island is home to New Zealand’s best wine regions, as well as glaciers, epic mountain ranges and even a ‘Dark Sky Reserve’.

Although you’ll need several weeks to see the best of New Zealand’s nature, this is one adventure you’ll be unlikely to forget any time soon!

Réunion

Found near the Eastern coast of Africa and close to Mauritius, Réunion island isn’t often considered by travellers.

But for those of you who venture off the beaten path in search of the island’s best nature spots, will be met with dramatic waterfalls, sparkling lagoons, pristine beaches and tropical jungle treks.

Jatiluwih Rice Terrace

One quick search on Pinterest or Google Images for photos of Bali presents endless reels of lush green rice fields, tropical jungles, bright blue oceans and endless blue or pink skies.

The epitome of exotic nature, Bali in Indonesia is most known for its volcanic mountains, tropical jungles, rice paddies, sandy beaches, colourful coral reefs and incredible underwater adventures. It’s a total bucket list destination !

Not to mention the nearby Gili Islands are ridiculously beautiful too – especially the honeymoon island of Gili Meno !

Views from Tintagel Castle

Often overlooked in preference of far flung and far more exotic locations, it’s often forgotten just how much natural beauty there is right here in the UK .

From the seemingly bottomless meres, tarns and waters of the Lake District , to the mountainous peaks of Scotland and Wales, beautiful Cornish beaches , shaded canopies of the Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks and even the northern part of the ‘Emerald Green Isle” itself, you’re sure to find somewhere in the Great British Outdoors well worth exploring.

Just come prepared for unpredictable weather year-round!

10. Tanzania

No list of the best nature travel destinations would be complete without mentioning an exotic safari.

Africa is – by far – one of the most popular destinations for animal lovers, and while the continent is home to many safari parks, Tanzania along the East coast is home to some of the absolute best.

From the classic savannah destinations of the Serengeti, to chimpanzee trekking in the tropical rainforests of Gombe, big five safari experiences in stunning Ngorongoro Crater and even the colourful coral reefs of nearby Zanzibar island, a Tanzanian safari is sure to be the most magical.

Best Travel Destinations For Couples Who Love Culture

Japan

Thanks to its multiple millennia of history, as well as Buddhism and Shintoism influences, Japan has one of the richest cultures in the world.

The country is home to exquisite and highly detailed temples of worship, traditional Geisha performers and exemplary calligraphy artwork.

While Tokyo presents a more modern front, the old capital of Kyoto is where to go if you truly want to experience some of Japan’s best and most authentic culture.

The city of Paris at sunset

France has been at the forefront of the art world for centuries.

Some of the world’s most well-known painters and sculptors have come from France including Monet, Degas and Van Gogh to name just a few.

Today, France (particularly Paris ) continues to be the perfect destination for art lovers. Its capital city is home to the infamous (and sprawling) Louvre museum, as well as Musée d’Orsay, Centre Pompidou, Paris Museum of Modern Art and Palais de Tokyo.

Athens

Greek history spans millennia. Particularly the Ancient Greek era from 1100 BC to 146 BC is one of the most talked about in history lessons across the world.

Greece’s history has been a key influencer in many modern-day notions including democracy, the Olympics and even Disney movies, which have so often been based on Greek myths and legends.

Today, you can marvel at where it all started, thanks to the preserved ruins of the Parthenon, Acropolis of Athens, Temple of OIympian Zeus and many more tourist hotspots throughout the country and on neighbouring islands like Cyprus .

Palatine in Rome

Similarly to Greece, Italy and the Ancient Roman period of history is a well versed subject in schools.

Responsible for the concept of aqueducts, bathing and cleaning rituals, and wrapped up in Roman mythology, there’s no denying that venturing to Italy where it all began is the perfect trip for couples who love history.

Although you’ll find Italy’s history built into cities throughout the country, some of the best ones to visit include Rome , Pompeii, Verona and Florence .

Pittville Circus, Cheltenham

Having once been home to many settlements, not least the Vikings, Romans and Anglo-Saxons, the UK has so much history ingrained into its towns and cities.

Also, the UK has experienced many interesting periods of history since those earlier times as well, such as various monarchies and regencies, as well as industrialisation.

For those of you who are interested in ancient history, you should venture to towns and cities ending in either ‘cester’, ‘caster’, ‘ceister’, or ‘chester’, as these were all originally built as Roman camps. Some of the best examples include Gloucester, Chester , Leicester and Doncaster, while you can’t possibly miss a day trip to Bath to see the original Roman baths and pump rooms.

For those interested in royal history and the regency period, visits to London, Cheltenham and Brighton are not to be missed.

You should also make it your mission to drive around the Cotswolds as you can see quaint villages, thatched cottages and stone ruins synonymous with the Middle Ages here.

This 10 day UK trip itinerary should give you a good idea of where to go! >>>

china-wooden-door-travel-wishlist

The Chinese culture spans over 5,000 years. There’s such a richness when it comes to the country’s heritage that this alone is one of the many reasons why the country frequently attracts over 90 million visitors every year.

From marvelling at the myriad temples of worship and spiritual rituals, to learning more about the various dynasties in China’s history, as well as its porcelain, pottery and art influences, China is an incredible place to visit for culture lovers.

For a glimpse into China’s historic past, Beijing, Xi’an and Pingyao will be calling out to you, while a trip to Shanghai uncovers China’s future.

17. Austria

Gold Hofburg Palace Vienna

Thanks to world famous Austrian composers like Strauss, Mozart and Beethoven, Austria has really been put on the map when it comes to classical music and the opera.

Cities like Salzburg and Vienna are awash with opera houses, while a trip to the opera or to see a classical music performance frequently top tourist lists everywhere.

Alongside music, Austria is also great for architecture. Vienna, in particular, is full of neoclassical and baroque-style buildings and palaces , which are both grand and opulent in their appearance.

Flamenco dancers

Many extraordinary and traditional dances have sprung up in Spain over the years.

Among the most popular and well-known is flamenco, while other dances like the paso doble, bolero and fandango have frequently been included in worldwide dance competitions and movies.

Alongside dancing, Spain is also home to an interesting architecture scene. The medieval city of Seville and the gothic and other worldly city of Barcelona are two cities in particular that call out to architecture lovers.

Cuba

Although Cuba is slowly becoming more modern thanks to the car import ban being lifted in 2013, it remains one of the most extraordinary places to visit if you love culture.

For a start, it’s like stepping back in time as the island is still full of 1950s vintage cars. These are juxtaposed against bright and colourful architecture, making for perfect Instagram shots and memories.

Music also plays a key part in the Cuban culture. Many of the sounds you’ll hear around the country today have been adapted from other musically-rich cultures, such as Spanish guitars or Afro-Cuban jazz.

Walking the streets of Cuba will often present itself with extraordinary dancers and street festivals centred around music and dance.

India

From temples and places of worship associated with Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism, to elaborate wedding traditions and rituals , as well as world-renowned festivals like Diwali and Holi, a trip to India (even a short one) is sure to uncover its rich heritage and culture.

Whether you’re marvelling at its intricate architecture, watching uplifting music and dance performances, or immersing yourself in the varied religions, India really knows how to open up and allow you to embrace their way of life… regardless of where you choose to visit in the country.

Egypt

Of all the countries to visit for history lovers, Egypt just has to be up there.

The Pyramids of Giza are known the world over, as are the treasures that lie (or used to lie) within them.

There’s a reason why so many of our ancestors ventured inside the pyramids in search of gold, hieroglyphs and mummified Pharaohs. Although they may have been risking the wrath of curses placed on the tombs, they allowed us all to get a glimpse of the wonders inside.

Today, most visitors head to either Cairo or Giza (or both), which are conveniently located near to each other. But the city of Alexandria is also well worth a visit as it’s often considered to be the birthplace of literature and philosophy.

Best Travel Destinations For Couples Who Love City Breaks

The French capital of Paris is frequently referred to as the “City of Lights” or the “City of Love”, making it the very essence of romance for couples who love city breaks.

25. Amsterdam

2 day Amsterdam itinerary

The quirky city of Amsterdam, found in the Netherlands, is an enjoyable city break for couples intent on visiting interesting museums and art galleries together, while taking full advantage of Amsterdam’s relaxed approach towards erotica and drugs.

And when you can also combine this with romantic walks along the 31 miles of canals and a few historical and cultural exhibits, your city break to Amsterdam is bound to be unforgettable.

An Irish pub in Dublin with flowers hanging outside it

As one of the major cities in Ireland, Dublin offers a lot of variety to its visitors.

From drives and hikes out in the neighbouring countryside, to walks around historic Dublin, and epic half day trips from Dublin , there’s a lot on offer here.

And when you can also combine this with a naughty sip (or few) of Guinness, then you’re bound to have lots of fun with your travelling partner during this fun and relaxed city break .

Rome

Rome is a very popular city break option as it’s a place of great food, interesting history and offers plenty to see and do – whether you have one weekend to spare or just one day.

We’d recommend staying in Rome for at least 3 days in order to see the best of it.

Top tourist highlights include the Colosseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Vatican City and Palatine, while the various “Piazzas” like Piazza Navona are perfect for whiling away a couple of hours people watching and eating gelato in the sun.

Schloss Charlottenburg

Berlin is one of Germany’s hippest and trendiest cities, but has an astonishing and gruesome history.

During this city break, you’ll both enjoy learning more about this extraordinary city and its various histories, including that of WWII and the fall of the Berlin Wall .

And at night, you’ll also enjoy visiting some of the many bars and clubs on offer here. There’s a reason Berlin is so popular with young 20-somethings!

Have fun dancing the night away, followed by more subdued and respectful sightseeing during the day.

Britain's smallest police station in Trafalgar Square, London

The UK’s capital city is great to visit in its own right with lots of interesting museums, art galleries, theatre shows, palaces and gardens to explore.

However, it’s also a great base for anyone interested in seeing the “Great British Countryside” as well.

Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire, Essex and Kent are all reachable within an hour or two from London in case you’re after an interesting day trip during your London city break.

30. Barcelona

Barcelona

Barcelona in Spain brings something a little different to a couple’s city break.

Not only can you marvel at interesting architecture, such as Gaudi’s Sagrada Família, and visit contemporary museums and art galleries, but you can also chill on one of the city’s many beaches.

So if sun, sea and sand coupled with Sangria and sublime architecture is your bag, then Barcelona is the city break for you.

31. Brussels

Brussels

We’ve recently discovered the wonders of Brussels, Belgium’s hip political gem, and we loved our city break so much that it just had to make it onto the list.

You can easily see the city’s many highlights in a long weekend as they are frequently found close to the city centre and the infamous gilded buildings of Grand-Place.

During your visit, you should make an effort to try original Belgian chocolates and head out on a  street art walking tour .

And if you have a little more time, try visiting one of Belgium’s many other nearby cities such as Bruges , Antwerp and Ghent by train.

You may notice that these first city break recommendations are all in Europe. While the best city breaks are often in Europe due to the continent having lots of small cities that are easy to get around in, there are plenty of other cities around the world that can be enjoyed as a city break too.

32. Los Angeles

Rodeo Drive, Los Angeles

Found on the West Coast of the USA, Los Angeles is most famous for its connection with Hollywood and the movie industry.

Admittedly, many of the city’s hotspots focus around this such as the boardwalk stars , Universal Studios and iconic Hollywood sign.

But perhaps lesser known to some first time visitors is LA’s stunning beaches, pretty canals and quaint marina.

Aim to spend 3 days here venturing out on both the well beaten and not so beaten track.

33. San Francisco

San Francisco

Another of the USA’s popular West Coast cities is San Francisco.

Whereas LA is closer to what you think of when you imagine California, San Francisco is like the black sheep of the family.

Often witnessing a bizarre fog that descends over the city – locals fondly nickname it “Karl the Fog” – San Francisco isn’t where you’ll come for sunbathing but is where you’ll come when in need of a trendy city break in the US.

Just like LA, you’ll want to spend at least 3 days exploring all the sights at a leisurely pace.

Did you know? Both Los Angeles and San Francisco are great stopovers on your way to or from Hawaii. We actually did both to help break up the long flights out to Oahu and The Big Island!

Sydney Opera House, Australia

Although not the capital city of Australia, Sydney is – by far – one of the country’s most popular cities to visit.

A long weekend in Sydney means you can spend a few days exploring its bustling harbour, stunning beaches and myriad parks and gardens.

Afterwards, you could choose to see more of Australia or venture further afield such as to New Zealand, Bali or the Philippines.

35. New York City

Manhattan Bridge, New York City

Found right across the other side of the US from Los Angeles and San Francisco is New York City – aka “The Big Apple”.

Although you’ll need more time to see the best of New York – four or five days is the ideal city break here – you won’t be disappointed by just how much you can see and do.

Wander through sprawling Central Park. Traipse around huge museums like the MET and Natural History Museum. Cross the infamous Brooklyn Bridge. Cruise past the Statue of Liberty on your way to Staten Island.

These are just some of the amazing things you can do when in New York City.

36. Hong Kong

Hong Kong

Hong Kong is frequently used as a stopover by airlines flying to Asia, but you could try staying for a long weekend in order to make this stopover more interesting.

If you do, a serene harbour, beaches, parks, gardens and temples will be waiting for you.

From here, many couples go on to discover the wonders of China, Japan, Bali and the Philippines.

37. Saint Petersburg (currently not recommended)

St Petersburg

Note: We wrote this blog post before the current situation with Russia, so you’ll probably want to avoid this one for now. We decided to keep the following information in this blog post, so we can remember how travel has changed over the years.

Although Moscow usually draws in the crowds in Russia, Saint Petersburg is a fantastic option for a city break and is easy to get to from many European countries, especially Scandinavian and Eastern European countries.

By spending a few days in Saint Petersburg, you’ll discover a myriad of interesting museums, grand palaces, sacred cathedrals and interesting architecture.

Why not combine a city break in Saint Petersburg with a trip to Helsinki or even Lapland to see reindeer and the Northern Lights?

Tokyo

Japan’s capital city of Tokyo is extraordinary in its own right but is also the perfect gateway to explore more of the country and culture.

A long weekend in Tokyo can uncover some of its most interesting hotspots such as Ueno Park, Tsukiji Market, the district of Harajuku and Shibuya Crossing to name just a few.

Plus, a Tokyo city break can also easily be followed up with a longer stay in Japan by visiting the country’s old capital, Kyoto, the deer parks at Nara and day trips to Mount Fuji via one of Japan’s rail networks.

Dubai Ferry Cruise At Sunset

Similarly to Hong Kong, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates is also often used as a short stopover by major airlines flying to Asia, Indonesia or islands in the Indian Ocean.

But have you ever considered spending longer in Dubai such as 2 or 3 days?

This is ample enough time to see some of the city’s highlights including its beaches, marina, modern architecture and luxury shopping.

Best Travel Destinations For Couples Who Love Food

Mary's Shop Display

Whether you choose to visit the political hotspot of Brussels, historic Ghent , or the diamond district of Antwerp, there’s no denying that Belgium is the most epic chocolate destination in the world.

Known for creamy chocolatey flavours and pralines, many tourists flock to Belgium intent on trying as many different kinds of chocolate as they can during their trip.

Some of the most sought after Belgian chocolate shops include Neuhaus (the inventors of the praline), Chocolatier Dumon , Mary , Godiva and Leonidas .

Paris in 3 Days: Macarons

France frequently tops foodie destination lists and it’s easy to see why.

Whether you love cheese, wine, bread or pastries, you’ll often find some of the best in France.

For cheese lovers, make it your mission to visit the largest cheese production regions such as Roquefort, Comté, Camembert and Cantal.

Love wine? The stunning wineries in Bordeaux, Champagne, Loire Valley and Côtes du Rhône will be calling your name.

While France’s capital, Paris, is flush with superb bakeries and patisseries … macarons, choux pastries, eclairs and croissants are just some of the must-eat Parisian foods.

Italian Food

While France dominates the sweet end of the food hierarchy, Italy rules the savoury.

Fresh doughy pizzas, homemade pasta dishes, locally caught seafood and olive side dishes are just some of the Italian delicacies you can expect.

That said, it should be every traveller’s destiny to eat genuine Italian gelato at least once too. Florence has – by far – the best selection in our humble opinion.

Naples is perfect for pizzas, Rome is great for pretty much everything and coastal towns like Catania and Positano are ripe with seafood dishes.

43. Thailand

Thailand

There’s a reason why Thai food has arrived in many Western countries.

Aromatic spices, healthy noodle dishes and Thai green curries with a bit of a kick are just some of the foods you can look forward to when on a foodie holiday to Thailand.

Thailand is also world-renowned for its street food and the variety on offer at market stalls and tourist hotspots is superb. You can also discover some of the cheapest Michelin Star food here as well.

44. Morocco

Morocco Mint Tea

Most travellers visit Morocco for souks, haggling and the bustling atmosphere of Marrakech.

However, we’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again: there is so much more to Morocco than just souks and Marrakech.

If you venture out of town, you’ll find beautiful valleys , clean beaches, an interesting culture and deserts that seem never-ending.

But you’ll also find incredible food.

Fragrant spices, tropical fruits, sweet mint tea and succulent meat dishes cooked in a tagine are just some of the amazing foods you can expect.

Spanish Food

The Spanish culture is heavily linked with its food and eating habits.

While lunch times are a heavily involved affair lasting for 2 or 3 hours and split over several courses, dinners are light and eaten late. And you can bet that tapas dishes will make their appearance!

When in Spain, you can’t resist trying paella or gazpacho washed down with some delicious red wine from the Rioja region.

Just whatever you do – take your time with it. A foodie holiday in Spain means eating slowly and spending time with your loved ones.

46. Denmark

Danish pastry

While Denmark is most well-known for its simple and sweet Danish pastries, there’s much more to this foodie destination than meets the eye.

Smørrebrød, a dark brown rye bread topped with various toppings is eaten as a snack throughout the day, while roast pork (aka Flæskesteg) is also a local delicacy.

Plus, cheese lovers can’t possibly miss out on a strong and pungent Danish blue!

Indian Food

Indian cuisine has made its rounds the world over. And weirdly enough, an Indian curry now seems to be the nation’s favourite dish right here in the UK.

But travel to authentic India, and you’ll discover a whole new world of Indian cooking.

Fragrant spices, curries with a kick, fluffy rice, crispy samosas and soft flatbreads will be even more flavoursome than what you’ll find at a takeaway.

Furthermore, the actual process of eating in India is something to be enjoyed and shared with others.

So… just like in Spain, take your time, try lots of different dishes and get to know one another again through deep conversation.

48. Germany

Lebkuchen

I’ve often joked that I should have stayed in Germany after I was born there. Germany truly is a meat lover’s paradise with lots of variety of succulent sausages and pork dishes on offer.

Some of our favourites include Bratwurst, Currywurst, Wiener and Frankfurters.

But there’s also more to German cuisine than just meat.

Other local delicacies include Black Forest Cake, Berliner doughnuts, Pfannkuchen pancakes and beers, ales and lagers.

And at Christmas time, Germany really comes into its own with tempting treats like Stollen, Lebkuchen, Christmas cookies and Glühwein.

49. The Netherlands

Dutch pancakes

Although some travellers won’t consider the Netherlands to be a foodie destination, others know that there’s more to this little country than meets the eye.

Both Gouda and Edam cheese originated here and that fact is celebrated across the Netherlands.

While sweet Stroopwafel and Pannenkoeken (Dutch pancakes) are well worth discovering – especially as simple street food dishes.

Full English Breakfast

The UK is a highly multicultural country so you’ll find all kinds of cuisines available throughout, ranging from Italian, Indian, Chinese, Thai and even Caribbean.

But traditional British food is also well worth travelling for.

While our food is often described as “stodgy” or “unhealthy”, this is simply a misunderstanding of what British food is all about.

For most Brits, food is about comfort, which is why so many of our classic dishes involve warm custard or hot gravy.

Some of our best dishes include the humble roast dinner, fish ‘n’ chips, hot apple crumble, sausage and mash, quaint afternoon teas and, of course, the Full English Breakfast.

Hotel Amenities

Health & wellbeing, nice, france, best for: charming anniversary spots.

Paris is the picture of a city destination built for lovers with the soft ambience of brasseries, flirty cafe bars and the classic Eiffel Tower background adding charm to couples’ holiday selfies. But southern province Nice, the heart of the French Riviera , has its own style of quintessentially French. From quaint strolls down the promenade and dips in the Cote d’Azur to tables for two at lavish restaurants, the coastal city is the ideal place to celebrate a milestone anniversary or a partner’s birthday in style.

Castel Enchanté  in the hills above Nice is a traditional 19th-century B&B a stone’s throw from Mediterranean beaches. Magenta shutters and climbing vines accent the fairy-tale interior and a buffet breakfast, swimming pool access and wifi are included in the cost.

Tuscany, Italy

Best for: foodie couples.

From couples’ cooking courses to tandem bike rides and wine-tasting days at balmy Italian vineyards , Tuscany is a European delight for foodie couples looking to indulge in cuisine. Think fine-tuning the art of a pana cotta, fresh pasta and gnocchi on private culinary skills days with your significant other. And the intimate adventures don’t stop there: sunrise hot air balloon rides, hot spring baths and late-night dancing on medieval cobbles can all round off a romantic week in the heart of the Italian countryside.

B&B San Remigio, an endearing Italian bed and breakfast in Florence, boasts exposed beams, traditional interiors and a terracotta terrace on the doorstep of the Piazza della Signoria.

The Maldives

Best for: newlyweds.

The quintessential love bubble location for the freshly married to escape reality, the Maldives archipelago in the Indian Ocean really raises the bar when it comes to bucket list accommodation. Thatched floating villas with sea slides and hot tubs are often on offer for a private slice of paradise. All-inclusive seafront resorts dot the turquoise waters and personalised itineraries of paddle boarding, snorkelling and jet skiing fill any gaps in days spent on white beaches or turning pages from the comfort of a hammock.

Hurawalhi Island Resort  in Hurawalhi embodies every detail of a true Maldives experience. Panoramic sea views, private sun decks and the world’s largest all-glass underwater restaurant create an atmosphere of unmistakable luxury among the palms.

Koh Chang, Thailand

Best for: paradise islands.

The lush greenery, dramatic mountains and diverse landscapes of the Thai isles provide their own version of nirvana for partners – and a trip can be very friendly on the wallet. With 1,430 islands to choose from, lovebirds looking for seclusion and a bit of peace and quiet or adventure and excitement can find it all on Thailand’s coasts. From abseiling down waterfalls to relaxing on remote sandbars, activities can be selected to suit, while accommodation options include treehouses and river bungalows.

Gajapuri Resort , or “Elephant’s Empire”, in Koh Chang offers couples an outdoor spa, library and open-air restaurant all wrapped up in a palm-lined tropical paradise. Tents, wooden villas and sea view suites let the outside in at this reasonably priced beachside stay.

Grindavík, Iceland

Best for: spa days for two.

Balance active exploration with relaxation on a holiday in Iceland . The Nordic country provides a best-of-both-worlds holiday for the adrenalin junkie and laid-back sauna dweller in the relationship. High-energy snow sports and Golden Circle tours of waterfalls, volcanoes and otherworldly landscapes meet spa days at the iconic Blue Lagoon in Grindavík, while nights of quality time spent under the glow of the aurora borealis make for the perfect backdrop to a week of fine dining at intimate Reykjavík restaurants.

Harbour View Cottages  provide guests with sea views, sun terraces and large walk-in showers. Just five miles from the relaxing haven of the Blue Lagoon, glimpses of the rare Northern Lights are not uncommon from the comforts of the cosy cottages.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Best for: cosy city breaks.

Make the most of a long weekend with one-on-one time in the Danish capital. From gentle boat trips down canals to candlelit cafes, Copenhagen’s typically Scandinavian atmosphere is perfect for a romantic holiday. Couples can bask in ‘ hygge ’, a Danish quality of cosy contentment, at hole-in-the-wall coffee stops between historic attractions and even take in the stars from the planetarium or the Round Tower. Gazing upon the twinkling lights of Tivoli Gardens from March to December are an equally magical way to spend an evening.

Manon Les Suites offers couples a taste of Indonesian magic in the centre of the Danish city. Lush greenery, four-poster beds and a dynamic fusion of Scandinavian and Balinese decor adorn suites for two guests on an intimate city escape.

Santorini, Greece

Best for: sunset dinners.

Greece’s shining star, Santorini, is widely regarded as one of the most romantic destinations in Europe. The island’s famous sunsets over the Aegean lend the perfect backdrop to spreads of Greek meze and local ouzo – seasoned couples used to people watching in the comfortable silence of their 100th date are sure to spot a proposal or two amid the cobalt rooftops and whitewashed walls of the Cycladic shore.

The stylish  Onar Villas  feature cave-style accommodation 10 minutes from the centre of Oia. White stone, turquoise pools and breathtaking Caldera volcano views greet guests arriving at this romantic escape.

Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

Best for: romantic retreats in nature.

If your vision of romance involves honeymoon-style accommodation in a tropical rainforest, a visit to Costa Rica in Central America is for you. Couples lusting for unique adventures can get active in the great outdoors, go horse riding or lounge on alluring gold beaches in Manuel Antonio, the home of luxury resorts and bountiful wildlife.

Makanda by The Sea Hotel  boasts celebrity treatment in deluxe infinity pool villas just 200m from the beach. Romantic features include sea view terraces and excursions such as on-site sunset horse riding just one mile from Manuel Antonio National Park.

Kyoto, Japan

Best for: intimate tradition.

Already special thanks to its Buddhist temples, imperial palaces, Shinto shrines and traditional wooden houses, Kyoto  becomes even more so come spring, when pastel cherry blossoms line its winding paths and riverbanks. Traditional accommodation for two in a romantic Ryokan (Japnese inn) features elegant tatami-matted rooms, hot baths and authentic Japanese cuisine, while other lovebird-friendly attractions include soaking in traditional onsen (hot springs).

Ryokan Mugen  offers a traditional Japanese inn with 160 years of history, modern mattress rooms and bikes for hire. Air conditioning, garden views and complimentary chocolates at the adults-only lodging are sure to sweeten the deal for couples staying in Kyoto.

Then, retreat to one of the many hotels and resorts that offer glitzy accommodations for two – not to mention some must-visit spas . Best romantic holidays

Kyoto, Japan

1.  Kyoto, Japan

Tokyo gets all the noise, but Kyoto is for lovers. Known as Japan’s most romantic city, the historic and cultural capital of this most fascinating nation is a picture-postcard city of classical Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, traditional wooden houses and imperial gardens. The food is incredible, the people are magnificent, the atmosphere is spellbinding. What more could you want from a couples getaway? The city has become something of a hotspot for proposals, and it isn’t hard to understand why. Prep the knee!

St Lucia

2.  St Lucia

If chocolate is an aphrodisiac, romance is guaranteed to blossom in  St Lucia . Cacao is so abundant here that it grows by the roadside. The island is home to Hotel Chocolat’s cocoa plantations, and its hotel, Boucan, has a chocolate-themed spa and bean-to-bar experiences. It helps that St Lucia is gorgeous, with two distinctive peaks—the Pitons—crowning one of the lushest landscapes in the Caribbean. Hotels like Jade Mountain set the bar for views and romance, but couples will equally love St Lucia’s legendary rum-fuelled street parties.

Rocky Mountains, Canada

3.  Rocky Mountains, Canada

Find the right train and all our old-fashioned, romantic notions of rail travel become justified. The route we’d pick carves through  Canada ’s Rocky Mountains around  Banff ,  Jasper  and Lake Louise, on the Rocky Mountaineer. This is no ordinary train: viewing carriages have windows that span from the ceiling to seats so that it truly feels like you’re among the wilderness. There are four different routes taking a minimum of one to four days. Expect frothy rivers, towering spruce, glacial lakes and perhaps the occasional bear.

Provence, France

4.  Provence, France

Artistic luminaries of the 19 th and 20 th centuries were clear on the romantic appeal of Provence. Cézanne was a native of the region, but it also lured Picasso, Monet and Van Gogh with its lavender fields, pavement cafes and attractive light. From the sweeping bridge of Avignon to the glamour of Nice and cobbled squares of Aix-en-Provence – there’s enough eye-candy in this southern swathe of France to make even the most hardened realist swoon.

Prague, Czech Republic

5.  Prague, Czech Republic

The City of a Hundred Spires seems to have been built with love in mind. That can be the only takeaway for couples looking over the Czech capital from the viewpoint at Letna Hill, a beer in one hand and beloved in the other. Prague is a postcard city of stories, a famous old wonder that has long been a favourite of couples looking for a romantic getaway and for good reason. The Old Town gets most of the attention, but don’t be afraid to explore further afield either; each district has its own unique take on romance, from the modern stylings of Karlin to the grandeur of Vinohrady and beyond. Prague lives up to the hype, and then some.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

6.  Buenos Aires, Argentina

The country that invented tango is guaranteed to get every couple’s pulse racing. Dance aficionados head for the  milongas  (dance halls) of San Telmo in  Buenos Aires  for steamy nights pressed close together. After a few days soaking in the bohemian vibe and late-night bars of BA’s oldest neighbourhood, we recommend allocating time for wine tours in Mendoza and a posh eco-lodge in the remote heart of Patagonia,  Argentina .

Marrakech & Essaouira, Morocco

7.  Marrakech & Essaouira, Morocco

Despite its unfortunate reputation for hassle,  Marrakech  remains the stuff of Arabian Nights fantasies. Its sand-coloured streets are a gloriously intoxicating whirlwind, and there’s nothing quite as arresting as the call to prayer in this city of a thousand rooftops. We recommend splurging on a sumptuous palace hotel or medina riad with a decadent spa (many of which are still remarkably good value). Afterwards, retreat to the whitewashed coastal town of Essaouira for a peaceful wind-down by crashing waves.

Santorini, Greece

8.  Santorini, Greece

The calling card of this popular island in  Greece  is its famous sunsets. Blue-and-white villages trickle-down stark mountains saluting the sea, with dozens of hotel and bar terraces positioned for the chink of champagne glasses as the sun sinks. Many accommodation options are designed for maximum privacy, some have private plunge pools, and several are adults-only.  Santorini  gets crazy busy in summer, but that’s no biggie if you can afford your own little slice of the horizon.

Iceland

9.  Iceland

Iceland can feel like another world, a world filled with all the best bits of nature, from thrilling geysers to moon-like craters and more. A bit like love, right? Okay, there might not be geysers and craters in love, but you get the point. A romantic holiday to Iceland is something of a bucket list item for couples who visit in search of that very unique atmosphere. It doesn’t get more special than the staggering light show of the Aurora Borealis, an achingly gorgeous experience that everyone should seek out at least once in their lives. The eccentric side of capital Reykjavik is plenty romantic in its own right.

Palawan, Philippines

10.  Palawan, Philippines

Beach bums and lovers of the life aquatic can satisfy all their desert-island fantasies in Palawan. It’s a large archipelagic province of the Philippines (the easiest way to get here is to fly from Manila) characterised by virgin rainforest, limestone karst cliffs and unrivalled sands. Below water, there’s WWII shipwreck diving and cities of coral. Forget Thailand: rumour has it that Palawan’s Bacuit Archipelago was the real inspiration for Alex Garland’s The Beach . The author lived in El Nido for six months.

South Island, New Zealand

11.  South Island, New Zealand

There’s something undeniably dreamy about the prospect of waking up somewhere different every day. If you and your partner are adventurers at heart, you’ll love campervanning through New Zealand ’s dramatic southern island. Just the two of you and the open road, with mountains, fjords and lakes to gawp at. There are hundreds of camping grounds to choose from, many in remote, beautiful locations.

Rajasthan, India

12.  Rajasthan, India

Ok, so  India  isn’t everyone’s idea of romance. But Rajasthan is something special, and it’s still a destination where unique experiences and luxury are a relative bargain. You can roam abandoned forts and decorated palaces with their sumptuous harems, take desert camel rides, track tigers at dawn, and bed down in magical old maharaja digs with a G&T poured by a butler. Hire a car with a driver to make it stress-free; it’s surprisingly affordable.

Hamilton Island Travel Guide | Visit the beautiful Whitsunday Islands and take scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef. This guide features all the best things to do on Hamilton Island | Bucket List Seekers

Australia is often considered the place to go for  bucket list-worthy travel adventures . But is it the place to go for romance? Absolutely.

We live in Australia, so we might be a little biased, but we happen to think the Whitsundays absolutely deserves a spot on this list of the best destinations for couples holidays in the world.

The Whitsundays are a cluster of 74  islands off the coast of Queensland  that seem to be curated specifically for romance. Many Aussies visit these glorious islands to propose, take a romantic vacation, or even get married.

The picturesque turquoise water, secluded white sandy beaches, and unbelievable scenery that looks like a backdrop, help set these islands apart from other tropical destinations. And not to mention, it’s the ideal location to  see the Great Barrier Reef .

Curate a unique stay by glamping on a pontoon in the Great Barrier Reef or spend the night in an underwater suite. Other romantic places for couples to go in the Whitsundays include stunning  Hamilton Island  and uber-luxe  Hayman Island .

Best Time to Visit:  Aim to go to The Whitsundays in September, as it offers the best weather and conditions for water activities like snorkeling.

Where to Stay:  The Intercontinental Hayman Island  is the ultimate tropical couples resort.

A list of the best couples getaways is not complete without listing Paris as one of the most romantic cities in the world!

Not only is Paris one of the  most beautiful cities in France  (and Europe), it features a little bit of everything for couples to enjoy. Since Paris is a haven for foodies, it’s also necessary to try as much of the local food as possible. Choose a few cute local cafes and enjoy a croissant and cup of coffee like the local Parisians.

We recommend couples  spend at least two days  soaking in the vibes of Paris, before heading off to one of  these equally romantic places in France .

Best Time to Visit:  If your objective is avoiding higher hotel costs and crowds, then February and August are the best months to schedule a trip to Paris.

Where to Stay:  Hôtel Le Walt  offers fabulous views of the Eiffel Tower.

A diverse landscape filled with volcanic boulders and lush forests is surrounded by incredibly clear waters, helping create an idyllic location that has made it’s mark on many stunning Instagram photos.

Cycling around the islands is another popular activity, as it allows you to enjoy the pretty landscapes with your loved one.

While some other destinations on this list have focused on enjoying beach-laden destinations for a peaceful getaway, Bora Bora takes the cake for serenity. This remote French Polynesian island provides the feeling that you’re tucked away in a private paradise with your significant other.

Set on a cluster of volcanic islands and atolls in the South Pacific, Bora Bora boasts palm-fringed islets, dramatic mountains, turquoise lagoons, and uber-luxury resorts with overwater bungalows. It is simply paradise.

Where to Stay:  We love the overwater bungalows at  Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora .

#8 | Fiji

Idyllic turquoise water by an exotic beach in the Yasawa island in Fiji in the south Pacific ocean

Fiji is without a doubt one of the best couple island vacations that is completely underrated. Popular amongst Australian holiday-makers (due to the short flight time), yet it seems to be undiscovered by the rest of the world.

Those seeking a more luxurious beach getaway will enjoy spending time in Fiji . You’ll find pristine beaches covered in shady palm trees, private islands to explore, luxury resorts, spas, and glimmering water.

Relax at Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pool, a natural spa experience unlike any other. Start by lounging in the mud pool as one of the natural spa treatments, then work your way through the three available hot springs.

Other fun water activities like snorkeling with manta rays or swimming underneath waterfalls help you stay cool on this beautiful island.

Make sure to add a trip to one of the private islands to your itinerary. There’s nothing more romantic for couples than staying in very a secluded spot.

Best Time to Visit:  May through September provide clear sunny skies and the perfect weather for exploring the islands.

Where to Stay:  Six Senses Fiji  is the perfect secluded spot for couples to escape.

For a couples holiday destination with a twist, the Isle of Skye is a unique place to visit for a romantic getaway. Imagine medieval castles waiting to be explored, rugged terrain, and incredible scenery all in one spot.

This island’s name translates to “Cloud Island” from Old Norse, providing an accurate description of the island as it seems to sit among the clouds.

There’s quite a lot to do on the Isle of Skye, like watching the Northern Lights as they dance across the evening sky, although only visible during the wintertime.

Otherwise, you can spend your time hiking around the Isle of Skye if you’re feeling particularly active. Afterward, grab a drink at one of the local pubs. It’s a particularly spectacular place for an adventurous  couples road trip .

Best Time to Visit:  April and May are excellent months to visit the Isle of Skye. These months are the driest, making them ideal for outdoor activities.

Turks and Caicos Beach

These stunning islands are renowned for their white sand beaches, which are some of the best in the world. Combine these stunning beaches with 360 days of sun and fewer crowds than Nassau, and it’s easy to see why the Turks & Caicos Islands is one of the best destinations for a couples holiday.

The islands’ unique location on top of an underwater plateau helps create an environment with some of the best scuba diving in the Caribbean.

como uma ubud villa overlooking the jungle

Bali is a stunning destination and one of the best couples vacation spots that allows you to immerse yourself in nature.

Stunning beaches are a given in Bali. However, you’ll also find  beautiful rice fields , picturesque lakes, cascading waterfalls, majestic mountains, and nearly every type of natural landmark here. Interspersed between the incredible natural beauty of Bali lies its impressive temples.

One of our favourite romantic places to visit in Bali is Ubud, a lively mountain town with  great food , stunning natural  hidden gems , and  many activities to offer  all types of couples.

Along the south coast of Bali, there’s buzzing Seminyak, laid-back Canggu, impressive Uluwatu and family-friendly Nusa Dua. These locations offer couples more entertainment options, beaches, and  luxury resorts .

In it for the long-haul: why couples who travel together stay together

Emma Sparks

travelling couple holiday

A couple hiking through the forest and helping each other to climb

It’s a fact: travel is sexy. Studies have shown that most people prioritise finding a partner with similar levels of wanderlust, while including a holiday snap in your dating app profile improves your chances of scoring a first date.

The journey doesn’t end there, of course. From the first romantic city getaway to a round-the-world adventure for two, the highs and lows of travelling as a couple can deepen the bond you share with your other half. Here’s how.

Travellers holding hands as they cross a river

You work as a team

Successful couples know how to problem solve and compromise, and there’s no better place to hone those skills than on the road. Planning and booking a trip, navigating an unknown city and coping with unexpected challenges – such as late trains, lost credit cards or even scammers – all require teamwork. The buzz you’ll get from overcoming such obstacles together will no doubt bring you closer and build trust.

Couple’s counsel: Making joint decisions isn’t always easy – particularly if you have different travel styles . If you find yourselves bickering, heed this Vanilla Ice-inspired motto: Stop. Collaborate and listen. If all else fails, you could always consider a rap battle...

A couple eating some street food in a market

You experience new things together

You don’t want to grow apart, so why not grow together? Perhaps quite literally, if the sight of tropical flora ends up inspiring you to spruce up your garden when you return home. Whether your tummies rumble in unison at the sight of unusual street snacks or you lock eyes and share a gleeful smile when you spot an exotic bird in the wild, the joint encounters and learning opportunities globetrotting gives you will help foster collective interests that will only make your connection stronger.

Couple’s counsel: Take your new worldly wisdom home with you: learn to cook your favourite Thai dish and host a dinner party for friends; hang that Moroccan mirror you haggled so hard over in your love nest; or enrol on a Spanish language course.

A man giving a woman a piggyback in a forest

You enjoy a vital break from routine

Binge-watching Narcos in your PJs and ordering a biryani may be the norm for long-term twosomes, but wouldn’t you rather get a taste of the real Colombia or India instead? Travel breaks your everyday routine, injecting a little spontaneity back into your relationship in the process.

Couple’s counsel: While away you may reflect on your life at home and decide to make some changes that will benefit you both, such as taking more mini-breaks, minimising screen time or taking up a new hobby. If a trip inspires you to shake things up, make a pact and stick to it – it’s easy to fall back into old habits once you return.

Two men sleeping in a car

You see each other at your worst

Hangry. Stressed. Sick. Chances are you’ll both be all of these at some point during your travels. If your partner’s suffering, you’ll have to bear the brunt of each and every grumble – with the understanding that sooner or later, the situation will be reversed. If the pair of you are worse for wear simultaneously, prepare to fight over the last chip, or worse, the toilet bowl.

Couple’s counsel: Feeling vulnerable so far from home means you’ll need each other now more than ever. Have your loved one’s back and take the lead when they’re low. You’d be amazed what a quick nap and a bite to eat can cure.

Travel puts a twinkle in your eye and a spring in your step. When you see the world as a couple, you associate that feel-good factor with each other. Combine this with your sweetheart’s sun-kissed glow and your new-found carefree attitude and you’ll be eyeing each other up like a pair of love-struck teenagers.

Couple’s counsel: Now is the time to be present. You will never again be as young as you are in this moment (a motivational maxim if ever there was one), nor will you always be as happy. Make the most of it.

Couple swimming in a lake with mountains in the background

You get to know each other’s quirks

There’s a lot you can glean about a person by observing their behaviour as they travel. Packing techniques (or lack thereof), aeroplane etiquette and breakfast buffet habits can all highlight character traits you were, until now, blissfully unaware of. Fortunate couples may find their foibles are completely in sync – or at least complementary – while others will have to work out how to marry one’s aptitude for losing their passport with another’s fear of missing a flight.

Couple’s counsel: Patience is key here and you’ll need to take the rough with the smooth. Remember: your partner isn’t the only one with flaws.

You gain new, shared perspectives

Travel can stretch time. Suddenly you have hours, days or weeks to discuss anything and everything, from distant childhood memories to global politics. With a deeper understanding of each other’s viewpoints, a new, shared outlook may arise (eg if we can survive a 19-hour bus ride through rural China , we can survive anything) and vague plans for the future become thought-out, achievable goals.

Couple’s counsel: While travel can lead to many aligned perspectives, it may also unearth differences of opinion you never knew existed. Use the time you have on the road to discuss important issues in a stress-free environment and resolve recurring niggles.

Two women looking down on Halong Bay, Vietnam

You create memories that last a lifetime

You don’t need to traverse the globe to make wonderful memories, but it helps. Once you’ve tackled the Trans-Siberian , cruised along the Amazon and road-tripped Route 66 hand-in-hand, you’ll have plenty of glorious experiences to reminisce over in your old age – and anecdotes aplenty with which to bore the grandkids.

Couple’s counsel: Keep a journal during your travels, and when you’re back, create a scrapbook and organise and print special photos. When you’re old and grey these visual prompts will spark cherished memories of adventure and romance – or even inspire you to take an anniversary trip .

Best All-Inclusive Caribbean Resorts for Couples Guide

Adults-only policy.

When researching the best all-inclusive Caribbean resort for couples, keep top priorities in mind. If an adults-only environment is important, seek resorts that classify themselves as “adults-only” or “couples-only” destinations. This will ensure a romantic – and kid-free – getaway tailored to the preferences of couples.

The Caribbean islands each hold their individual charm, unique cultures, and attractions. Consider the location that best fits your needs before seeking out a specific resort. We’ve included many popular Caribbean destinations in this list including Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Dominican Republic, Barbados, Bahamas, Virgin Islands, and Costa Rica.

Only all-inclusive resort packages vary, depending on the resort. Check beforehand whether this includes meals, drinks, entertainment, activities, and spa treatments to determine the best all-inclusive resorts.

By knowing exactly what is covered in the all-inclusive package, you’ll be able to budget and avoid unexpected expenses. Choose a package that aligns with your interests and budget.

Romantic Extras

Many couples’ resorts provide an array of romantic amenities. Whether you’re seeking a couples’ massage, a sunset cruise, or a private dinner on the beach, check beforehand to be sure the resort offers your preferred activities.

Are there private beachfront, private pools for a romantic dip before dinner, or intimate dining options? If looking for a honeymoon escape, look into resorts that offer a free honeymoon package. Check in advance for special packages or services that may add to the romantic elements of the resort.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What makes a resort “all-inclusive” for couples in the caribbean.

A listing as “all-inclusive” generally means that the cost of the stay includes a range of services and amenities, whether those include dining, drinks, excursions, or other activities like spa services.

The rate at an all-inclusive couples’ resort will include accommodations, meal packages, beverages, and sometimes excursions. Check beforehand on various packages. Some may include different levels of alcoholic beverage options such as wine or beer with meals, or top-shelf options.

The reasoning behind an all-inclusive resort is to provide a complete package for couples to relax and enjoy the destination without worrying about individual expenses.

How do I choose between different Caribbean islands for a couples’ resort?

First, get clear on your needs and desires for the destination. By considering the type of experience you want, whether a relaxing beachfront experience, adventurous activities, culture, or a bit of everything, you’ll be able to make the best choice.

Since each island has its own vibe and appeal, consider whether you prefer lively and active nightlife, or prefer something more laid back and secluded. Choose an island that fits your activity needs, atmosphere, budget, and cultural appeal.

How far in advance should I book an all-inclusive Caribbean resort for couples?

The amount of time will depend on the island’s peak season, the popularity of the destination, and any holidays or special events. To get the best pricing, book well in advance – usually 6 to 12 months – for peak season.

If you can be flexible and travel during off-peak season, you may only need to book 3 to 6 months in advance. Keep in mind that some resorts offer discounts during off-peak season.

No matter when you book your reservation, be sure to note the cancellation policy in the event your plans change.

Are there any special romantic packages or services offered by these resorts?

Yes, many Caribbean resorts for couples offer special romantic packages. They’ll sometimes include personalized amenities designed especially for couples seeking a romantic getaway.

Whether it’s a romantic dinner, photography services, spa packages, room decorations, sunset cruises, honeymoon packages, and more, these packages are designed to enhance the amour and create a trip with lasting memories. Check with your resort for the romantic packages offered.

When looking for the best all-inclusive experience, consider what is most important to you as a couple.

Secrets Tides Punta Cana is our pick for best overall because of its stunning location, abundant amenities, multiple pools, and romantic setting.

Whether it’s a private island, nightly entertainment, romantic packages, destination weddings, or the ultimate spa offerings, these resorts have everything you need to create the perfect romantic couples’ escape.

Your First Couple’s Vacation: A Dozen Destinations to Consider

A successful and enjoyable first couple’s vacation starts with choosing the right destination, and we’ve got a dozen for you to choose from.

travelling couple holiday

A couple’s vacation is a completely different experience than traveling alone or with friends. The old adage says that if you can survive a road trip with each other, you may just have a shot—and there’s some truth to that! There is an art to traveling with a partner, and ensuring that you have a successful and enjoyable first couple’s vacation starts with choosing the right destination!

Where should you go? What kind of trip works best for your first time traveling together? That’s where we come in. Grab a comfy spot—we’re here to answer those questions and more, and we’ve compiled a list of 12 of the best romantic getaways and adventure destinations!

Bond over a scavenger hunt !

Did you know that Let’s Roam has created hundreds of scavenger hunts and indoor adventures for couples, families, and friends? Whether you’re exploring a city abroad or staying close to home, there’s a perfect experience for you! From haunted history tours to bar crawls , you’ll find something to do whenever you have the Let’s Roam app in hand!

Criteria for the Perfect First Couple’s Vacation

No trip is going to be perfect for every couple. We are all individuals and enjoy different things, and every love is unique. That’s why we have included all kinds of travel experiences on this list. However, there are a few travel tips to consider in a first trip destination to help ensure smooth travel, minimal stress, and plenty of fun!

1. Choose something short and close to home.

When traveling with a new partner, there is a lot of uncertainty. You don’t really know how this is going to go. Travel can be really stressful, and that is expounded the bigger and more complex the trip is.

If you are on a plane for 12 hours, you arrive exhausted. You have jet lag and feel like poop. You then have to rent a car and drive in a foreign country, which will test even the strongest of marriages for that first 30 minutes. You might not speak the language, and you likely won’t have cell service for a bit, and Google Maps will fail you. Big, international travel is full of these little inconveniences that can really add up. Then, heaven forbid, if you break up, you are stuck far from home, with someone who is likely the last person you want to be around.

To avoid all this mess, keep your first trip within a few hours of home, and limit it to a few days at most. Short flights are cheaper, should you have to retreat, and you will likely feel more at ease through the trip. Limiting the trip to a few days will be long enough to know if it is going to work, and not too long to get sick of each other.

Pro Tip: You could also choose somewhere that you have been before. Familiarity decreases the stress level immensely.

2. Choose a place where you can enjoy some downtime.

Your new relationship needs some alone time to mature. Sure, Las Vegas and New York are amazing, but you don’t want to be surrounded by tourists and crowds the entire time. Pick a place that gives you the option of seclusion for at least part of your trip. Plan activities sparingly. You can always add more if you get bored, but if you have pre-booked a packed itinerary, and your partner hates it, then you are kind of stuck.

3. Choose somewhere that fits both your travel styles.

You may find that your partner exhibits a very different travel style than you. That isn’t a bad thing, and it doesn’t mean you can’t travel successfully together. You both will need to make compromises, but that is the nature of a relationship anyway, so it’s good practice.

Talk with your significant other before you start trip planning. Compare notes on how you travel. Do you stay in hostels or all-inclusive resorts? Do you generally eat at restaurants, buy groceries at local stores, or brave all the street food? Do you enjoy a packed itinerary, or are you looking for some downtime? Do you prefer budget public transit, or are you more of a private shuttle traveler? All good information to discuss before you’re on the road together! Collect your answers and look for a place where you can both be comfortable.

4. Choose a destination with easy amenities.

Even if your destination is close to home, some places are just harder to travel that others. Choose a destination that doesn’t stretch your travel chops too much for your first trip together! Battling language barriers, huge crowds, hot weather, difficult transit, too many location changes, or even hard-to-handle foods can really produce an unpleasant experience. This is especially true if you are not both avid travelers. For your first vacation as a couple, keep it simple!

5. Choose somewhere on both your wish lists.

You want your premier travel experience to be one that you both remember fondly! Your best bet is to choose a destination that both of you have been dreaming of. Since you likely will have activities on your list already, it also makes for easier trip planning!

The Perfect Travel Destinations for Your First Couple Trip

1. an all-inclusive resort in the dominican republic.

The greener half of the island of Hispaniola is popular with honeymooners and beach bums. The Dominican excels at making vacation easy! Its beaches are stunning. The locals are super-friendly. Most everyone speaks English in the tourist areas, and the DR’s laid-back vibe is perfect for the first vacation as a couple. Plus, the Dominican is one of the most budget-friendly places to experience an all-inclusive trip.

If you don’t mind splurging a bit, check in to Tortuga Bay in Punta Cana . There are plenty of beautiful resorts in the area, but Tortuga sits in the center of a 1,500-acre nature reserve, so it isn’t hemmed by other resorts on all sides. It feels secluded, and it was designed by the late Oscar de la Renta to fit into the surroundings, unlike some others. The amenities are top-notch. It’s not the cheapest resort on the island, and an ocean-view suite will cost you around $6,000 for the week, but you will want for nothing. For a cheaper option, if you don’t mind being in the middle of the action, Iberostar Grand Bavaro provides beautiful suites and all the amenities for around $3,000 per week.

2. Adventure in Nearest National Park

The United States is filled with incredible national parks. From the soaring peaks of Olympic NP to the swampy bayous of the Everglades, every portion of The States has something to show off. Choose the national park that is nearest to you and spend a couple of days getting to know each other, surrounded by the beauty of nature.

We wouldn’t suggest doing super long hikes or camping in the backcountry. Getting lost in the wilderness might be a bit too much for your first trip together. Instead, find a nice cabin or hotel room just outside the park and enjoy a couple of days of adventuring. Take a couple of day hikes. Go on a guided wildlife tour. Enjoy sunsets in your hot tub, and spend your evenings under starry skies.

3. A Wellness Retreat in Topanga, California

What could be more relaxing than an entire vacation dedicated to your well-being? Wellness travel is trending at the moment, and fantastic retreat complexes dedicated to all manner of spiritual, mental, and physical health are popping up all over the world, and we can’t think of a better first trip together.

For a well-rounded, minimalist retreat, head for the hill of California and book a spot in Katie Sadler’s Impact Retreat. Not only is the modern facility stunning, but Katie is a no-mess, no-fuss instructor that digs deep and covers it all! Her program includes nutrition consults, fitness routines, spiritual wellbeing, and even fashion consultations. Doing the program together will be an incredible bonding experience, and you will certainly get to know each other on a far more intimate level.

For more information on this style of travel, check out our guide “Wellness Travel and What It Can Do for You.”

4. Romance in Tulum

Tulum is the perfect Caribbean destination for a romantic getaway. Not only does it have some of Mexico’s most pristine and curated beachfront, but the small boutique hotel vibe is just what the relationship doctor ordered. While not very authentic, Tulum is adorable! You can wander the town on rented bikes, take a day trip to swim in one of the cenotes, visit the incredible Mayan ruins, eat at some of the cutest eateries on earth, and just enjoy that Caribbean life.

The flight to Cancun is usually pretty budget-friendly and short. You will need to secure transport to and from Tulum, which can be on the local shuttle, or you can arrange a private shuttle to pick you up at the airport through your hotel. Tulum is loaded with gorgeous boutique hotels in several price ranges. We do recommend that for a romantic getaway you stay in the “hotel zone” on the beach and not in the center of Tulum.

5. The Full Package in Antigua, Guatemala

Antigua is a charming Spanish-Colonial city just a 20-minute Uber from the capital of Guatemala City. It’s a gorgeous little town with loads of tourist activities and romantic ruins around every corner. Antigua is hemmed in by three volcanoes and features panoramic views in all directions. The cobblestone streets are perfect for hand-in-hand strolling. There is a fun chocolate factory to explore and several traditional cooking classes. There are also plenty of options for food of all kinds and several great bars for an evening drink.

Antigua is also a wonderland for adventure lovers. It is one of the best places on earth to hike an active volcano, is in close proximity to watersports on Lake Atitlan, and guided adventure activities are available all throughout the city for great prices!

6. Lazy Days in Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is oozing with Southern charm and romance. Giant live oaks, dripping in Spanish moss, and Antebellum mansions around every turn. It’s a beautiful city with tons of green areas and parks and lots of walking paths. Stroll along the waterfront at sunset. Take a characteristic trolley tour. Enjoy some Southern cooking and craft beer. Shop, dine, and dance on River Street and peruse the local art in Savannah City Market. If you need a bit of a thrill, take your love on a haunted scavenger hunt with Let’s Roam!

Savannah is a stunner, and her laid-back vibe is a great option for a short romantic getaway. Book a suite in the Kehoe House , one of Savannah’s top-rated bed and breakfasts! This gorgeous mansion from 1892 has the perfect location on Columbia Square, in historic Savannah, and they pride themselves on providing the perfect atmosphere for romance.

7. Quiet Time in a Mountain Retreat

There is nothing more relaxing and good for the soul than crisp mountain air! If you and your new partner want to do some rejuvenating, you don’t have to go extreme. Book a cabin retreat in the closest mountain range, and spend a few days in nature. Whether that is the Sierra Nevadas out west, the Ozarks in the Midwest, or the Blue Mountains of the South, you are sure to find the nature is stunning, the atmosphere is relaxing, and hopefully, the company is good too!

Check out this gorgeous lake retreat just outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee!

8. A Cultural Experience in Puerto Rico

If you are looking for an international experience without going too far, or if one of you doesn’t have a passport, then look no further than San Juan, Puerto Rico. As an unincorporated territory of the United States, PR has all the amenities you are used to, but with that Caribbean flair.

Puerto Rico provides everything you need for a few days of romance and adventure! The food is tasty! San Juan is full of historical forts and gorgeous architecture. The beaches are gorgeous. The resorts are very comfortable, and there are a plethora of more budget-friendly condos available. The nearby El-Yunque rainforest provides the perfect day trip for ziplining through the rainforest and splashing in waterfalls. The island is a wonderful combination of romantic sunsets, a vibrant culture, lazy beach days, and tons of adventure activities! Plus, it is a short trip and an easy travel destination in all aspects.

Here are our votes for “ The Top 12 Most Unforgettable Airbnbs in Puerto Rico ”!

9. An Easy Escape to Cozumel

The little island just off Cancun, on Mexico’s Mayan Riviera, is just about the most perfect first trip destination we can think of. It’s easy to get to, provides budget accommodations, and has plenty to keep you busy while intermingling plenty of romantic walks on the beach. Cozumel has long been a destination for those learning to scuba dive. You can easily take a course together if you are both interested in learning. There are dives ranging from the most basic to extremely advanced, and it is one of the most interesting and varied underwater landscapes on this side of the globe.

Cozumel also has wonderful boutique hotels lining its harbor side, and some of the most stunning wild beaches on earth, on the east side of the island. If you want to keep it purely touristy, then stay along the coast. For a more intimate and traditional experience, you will find local bars and restaurants all over the interior of the island. Punta Sur Eco Beach Park is a wonderful day trip where you can visit a historic lighthouse, hang out on gorgeous El Cielo beach, take a crocodile tour through the mangrove forest, and learn all about the local varieties of tequila!

10. Stunning Landscapes in Otherworldly Utah

Utah is one of the most beautiful locations in the United States. Boasting five national parks, interesting cities, otherworldly, red-desert landscapes, and America’s saltiest body of water, Utah is the quintessential getaway for an active couple!

Spend a day exploring the weird and wonderful Salt Lake City. Take a ride over The Great Salt Lake and peruse Antelope Island, where you can see wild bison herds and float in the lake. Then, wander through the thousands of natural rock arches in Arches National Park. Hike the Narrows in Zion National Park, and meander through the delightful hoodoos of Bryce Canyon. If you love outdoor adventure, then you really can’t beat a few days exploring Utah.

For a little help with our planning, check out “Your A to Z Guide to Visiting Zion National Park.”

11. Fall Foliage in Vermont

Vermont is world-famous for its fall foliage, and it’s about that time of year that your social media will be bombarded with quaint Vermont farms doused in yellows, oranges, and reds. A leaf-peeping road trip sounds pretty romantic to us!

Take a tour of a local cheese farm. Visit the covered bridges of Bennington County. Experience a farm-to-table meal Cloudland Farm , in the cute town of Woodstock. Mount Tom, Mount Peg, and Vermont’s tallest peak, Mount Mansfield all offer wonderful hiking trails, especially in the fall! Hike all morning, and then reward yourself with local cheese and craft beer. For a fantastic brewery experience, check out the masters at The Alchemist Brewery in Stowe! They have an informative guided tour, a super fun beer garden, and a hearty beer menu. You could really spend a full day at The Alchemist.

12. Hammock Life in Key West

Back to the beach we go, and this time, we head to the most Southern point of the Continental United States, the glorious Key West. Stroll vibrant Duvall street and hop in and out of its numerous bars and cafes. Enjoy a margarita at the iconic Green Parrot Bar . Waste your days away in a hammock by the crystal clear water, or try your hand at Snuba (a cross between scuba diving and snorkeling). Dog starved when owners swanned off for holiday at Center Parcs

A couple who let their dog starve while they ‘swanned off’ on holiday have been spared jail.

Sophie Singer, 41, and Keith Byrne, 38, went to Center Parcs in January 2022, leaving their dog Bentley behind.

A neighbour who had suspected that the boxer was suffering before the couple abandoned him for the Center Parcs trip raised the alarm.

The couple, from Eastbourne, East Sussex, have now been given suspended prison sentences after a judge heard they had seven children.

An RSPCA inspector said Bentley, 14, was barely alive and struggling to breathe. He was covered in scabs and weighed 12.5kg – less than half the weight he should have been.

Food wrappers and a felt pen were found in his stomach, prosecutor James Bull told Lewes Crown Court, suggesting the dog had resorted to hunting among rubbish for scraps of food.

Inspector Tony Woodley said: ‘It was very dramatic. I’m not allowed to take the dog by law but when I spoke to the police sergeant after making the 999 call, he told me to remove the dog right away.’

Dog wrapped in a blanket next to a bowl of water and some dog snacks on the bottom step of a stairs.

Judge Christine Laing KC said: ‘I find this case really extraordinary. Even as a non dog owner, I would have seen instantly that this dog was in a terrible state.’

She added: ‘He would not have been able to move without being in agony. The ribs showing through his skin you could not have failed to miss.

‘He had scabs and inflammation on his skin you could not have failed to miss.’

Despite an untouched bowl of water and dog snacks found nearby, there was no food in Bentley’s stomach.

Bull said ‘large amounts of rubbish’ were found in Bentley’s stomach, which he suspected the starved dog ate ‘out of excess hunger’.

He had prominent ribs, hips and spine. His eyes were sunken and his claws were curling over.

He was clearly a victim of chronic neglect, an RSPCA vet said.

The RSPCA did their best to save him, but Bentley died overnight on February 1 after months of neglect.

When contacted by the RSPCA through information found on Bentley’s chip, long distance lorry driver Byrne told them Bentley had not seen a vet for a year.

Singer said they put his condition down to old age and tiredness, claiming she believed he wouldn’t have come home if they had taken him to a vet.

The pair tried convincing the court they had left Bentley – their pet of seven years – in the care of a family friend, but the judge rejected this claim.

Judge Laing said: ‘You insist on continuing to persist with this bizarre story. The dog had clearly been suffering for a very substantial period of time and you decided to swan off on holiday.

‘I’m not even convinced you had somebody to look after it or that this person even existed. The animal was clearly starving. There was no food in its stomach.

‘It really is appalling behaviour. I am at a loss. Both of you talk about it as if it was a beloved family pet.

‘What an example you are showing to your children about what love is.’

Singer and Byrne were convicted in their absence of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and failing to ensure his welfare.

Criticising their avoidance of court, the judge said: ‘There is no mitigation to be found.

‘I’m quite satisfied you have gone to considerable efforts to avoid the whole court process.’

Judge Laing handed Singer a six-month prison term, suspended for two years, yesterday.

She gave Byrne nine months, suspended for two years.

They were both banned from keeping animals for five years, ordered to pay costs and given community service.
