The Used – 15 Year Anniversary Tour: In Love and Death

dsc_0032

The Used are currently on the road for their 15 Year Anniversary Tour with the up and coming band New Language. My taste in music has changed a lot since my emo phase, but I am so happy that the universe decided I was going to get to shoot The Used the night they were playing the album that got me through my teenage years.

The sold out show was full of diehard fans, who felt more like family than strangers, and definitely did not disappoint. Opening the show was New Language a fairly new band from Los Angeles. After their set I talked to the guys and found out that they were actually the only band all the guys in The Used could agree on to open for them and I can see why, I’m totally a fan now and can’t wait to see how far they will get.

When The Used finally came on stage everyone went crazy and I’m pretty sure the whole city of Austin Texas could feel the energy coming from the venue. The night was a little emotional too. Bert brought up losing his dog and his girlfriend to addiction while writing this album, he said In Love and Death saved his life just as much as it saved ours and reminded us all that tomorrow is never promised.

It was a night I will never forget surrounded by people who love this album as much as I do. Somehow between screaming the lyrics and avoiding crowd surfers I managed to get some pretty nice pictures, enjoy!

The Used's In Love and Death is their official sophomore album, following the tide-over hodgepodge of 2003's Maybe Memories. They've found some harder guitars in the interim, filling "Take It Away" and "I Caught Fire" with directly energizing chord progressions that spill over rewardingly into triumphant choruses. "Away" even revitalizes the ridiculously played-out singing guy/screaming guy dynamic that the Used and so many of their peers unfailingly deploy. The rest of In Love and Death plays directly to the bruised souls and bleeding hearts of tortured teenage scribblers everywhere, incorporating emo/punk revivalist genre touchstones like tortured/sweet vocals, jarring time shifts, and elaborately layered production techniques. Overall, it's a promising effort from the Used. © Johnny Loftus /TiVo

Emerging as a voice for the damaged masses in the early-2000s post-hardcore scene, Utah-bred rock group the Used connected to their audience with a potent mixture of feral rage and unabashed vulnerability. Their breakthrough platinum debut, The Used, gained popularity on both radio and MTV, bolstered by hit singles like "The Taste of Ink" and "Buried Myself Alive." As their presence on the touring circuit increased, they hit a mainstream peak with 2004's platinum In Love and Death and its follow-up, 2007's Lies for the Liars. While they remained a respected name in the scene and were a fixture in the Top 20, latter albums were less visible outside of their devoted core fan base. With each set, their sound evolved and bandmembers matured, reaching creative peaks on 2017's The Canyon, 2020's Heartwork, and 2023's Toxic Positivity.

The members of the Used had to overcome poverty, homelessness, and substance abuse, as well as the conservative attitudes of their hometown of Orem, Utah, to bring their screamo-tinged brand of post-hardcore to life. But they persevered and earned a contract with Reprise Records, releasing their self-titled debut album in June 2002. The Used proved to be their major breakthrough, going platinum in the U.S. upon the strength of hit singles "The Taste of Ink," "Buried Myself Alive," and "Blue and Yellow." Having only played a handful of shows around Orem prior to their record's release, the band -- vocalist Bert McCracken, guitarist Quinn Allman, bassist Jeph Howard, and drummer Branden Steineckert -- began relentless nationwide touring that quickly saw their fan base multiply. Club dates soon turned into successful stints on larger-scale festival/package tours including the Warped Tour, Ozzfest, and Projekt Revolution alongside Linkin Park and Snoop Dogg. In the summer of 2003, the Used issued the introspective compilation set Maybe Memories, another platinum release that contained unreleased songs, live material, behind-the-scenes footage, and more.

The Used's official sophomore outing arrived in September 2004. Debuting at number six on the Billboard 200, In Love and Death shot them even further into the public consciousness. The singles "Take It Away" and "All That I've Got" were Top Ten U.S. Rock chart hits, and the set was soon certified platinum. Around that time, they also recorded a version of the Queen classic "Under Pressure" with My Chemical Romance to benefit victims of the devastating tsunami of December 2004. Outside of the band, McCracken has also lent his vocals to the punk rock drum troupe Street Drum Corps. As the Used readied their third album, Steineckert parted ways with the group over creative differences in early fall 2006 (he went on to join Rancid).

The live CD/DVD Berth appeared in February 2007 to tide fans over a bit longer until their third proper full-length, Lies for the Liars, came out in May. Though he didn't perform on the record, drummer Dan Whitesides joined the band as an official member just in time for the supporting tour. The group's fourth full-length album, Artwork, was produced by Matt Squire (Panic! At the Disco) and released on Reprise in 2009. Arriving in 2012, Vulnerable, the band's fifth studio outing and first for new label Hopeless, was preceded by the single "I Come Alive." It was reissued the next year as Vulnerable (II), with a bonus disc stocked with B-sides, remixes, and acoustic tracks. Imaginary Enemy followed in 2014.

Allman and the band amicably parted ways in 2015, and Saosin guitarist Justin Shekoski was recruited as his permanent replacement just in time for a tour in celebration of the group's 15th anniversary. On each stop of the tour, the Used performed two shows, one for each of their first two LPs. A live album commemorating their acoustic stint at the Palace in Los Angeles was released in April 2016. Live and Acoustic at the Palace was recorded in October 2015 and featured accompaniment by a string quartet, harpist, pianist, and gospel choir.

The band's seventh studio album, The Canyon, arrived in late 2017. The critically acclaimed set marked an evolution in both style and content, inspired in part by the death of one of McCracken's close friends. When touring concluded for the album, Shekoski parted ways with the group and they began work on a follow-up. 2020's Heartwork, a nostalgic callback to their first three efforts, was another step forward for the Used. Produced by John Feldmann, the LP was the first with guitarist Joey Bradford and featured guests Jason Aalon Butler (Fever 333), Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker (blink-182), and Caleb Shomo (Beartooth). 2022 saw the emo icons issue the combative and celebratory "Fuck You" ahead of the arrival of their ninth long-player. The angsty and anthemic "People Are Vomit" appeared in early 2023, with Toxic Positivity arriving later that May. ~ Neil Z. Yeung & Corey Apar

It didn’t take much convincing for Louise and Greg Battaglia to join in Virginia Beach’s Historic Garden Week last week.

Greg designed the North End cottage with oiled white oak floors, handmade clay tiles and a backyard with ipe decking and a fireplace. He also designed another tour destination, the McCarty home, a bungalow built for low-maintenance summers at the shore. It features a combination of natural grasses and AstroTurf, and floor-to-ceiling windows that draw light across the entire downstairs.

Louise has also been best friends with Holli Wachmeister, the garden club co-chair, since grade school. When the call came in asking them to participate, Louise said, she “couldn’t say no.”

The garden club is responsible for creating the dynamic floral arrangements, with each home assigned its own squad dedicated to specific sections of the space. Each local group sets a theme.

“I love the fact that the garden club comes through and does these amazing arrangements,” she said. The arrangers “have used a lot of flowers out of their own yards, and a lot that are native to Virginia. It’s really an honor for our house to be a backdrop to some amazing work.”

The hard part, however, is finding homes that people want to see, and people who want their houses to be seen. The process takes over a year — and crafting a sales pitch for homeowners to let strangers into their homes is just the start. Garden club co-chairs Maria Hillebrandt and Wachmeister reached out to friends and family of the club to curate the tour.

“We got turned down a lot,” Hillebrandt said. “People are really being incredibly generous and open to let hundreds of strangers walk through their home. Not everyone wants to do that, and some don’t think their home is garden-tour worthy, but we would never ask someone if we didn’t think so.”

While the idea of the show may be sweeping landscapes and grand estates, the approach to the Virginia Beach tour this year was a little different.

It was about how families maintain a stylish, decorated home, and allow kids and family members to work and play.

“I’m interested in seeing what it looks like when there are children running around,”  Hillebrandt said. “How do you balance art and style and design? It comes across in multiple different ways.”

The tour also requires lots of extra hands, with more than 250 volunteers for the Virginia Beach tour and thousands across the state. A sponsorship chair is responsible for finding funding for the tour.

Costs for flowers, transportation, brochures and additional materials for the tour add up quickly, Hillebrandt said. Because of the narrow streets in the North End, the tour required a van for guests to visit areas with limited parking. If costs are covered, remaining proceeds are used to restore and preserve historic gardens and landscapes throughout the state.

Many guests have been taking in the views for years. Cindy Hyman, a Virginia Beach local, loves attending the tour every year she can, and has on and off since 1985.

She was at the McCarty home Wednesday. “I love it,” she said.  “I’ve been wanting to see the inside of this house since they remodeled, and it’s exquisite. It exceeds expectations.”

Less than a year before his death, Marley released his final album during his lifetime, Uprising, on June 10, 1980 . The deeply religious body of work includes some of Bob Marley's most well-known songs , including "Could You Be Loved" and "Redemption Song." To promote the album, Bob Marley and the Wailers embarked on the Uprising Tour starting in Europe. The U.S. leg was cut short due to his deteriorating health and Marley's final concert took place at the Stanley Theatre in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, on September 23, 1980.

Where To Watch Bob Marley One Love

Bob marley's cancer diagnosis explained, bob marley was diagnosed with melanoma in his toe in 1977.

As shown in Bob Marley: One Love, Marley sought medical advice for an infected toenail on his right foot during the Exodus Tour in 1977. The first doctor suspected that the lesion under his big toenail was the result of a soccer-related injury, but when his condition worsened, Marley sought a second medical opinion. The biopsy revealed that the lesion was actually a symptom of pre-existing cancer and Marley was diagnosed with malignant acral lentiginous melanoma , a rare but aggressive type of skin cancer that occurs in places that are not typically exposed to the sun.

Marley was advised to have the affected toe amputated, but he refused due to his religious beliefs and out of concern that it would hinder his ability to perform onstage. While his decision is included in Bob Marley: One Love, the movie omitted the fact that Marley opted instead to have his toenail and nail bed surgically removed , which he covered via a skin graft taken from his thigh. Marley did not experience any glaring health issues for years until 1980, when he visited New York City to perform two shows at Madison Square Garden on the Uprising Tour.

Once the cancer had spread throughout his entire body, Marley sought alternative treatments in Germany.

While jogging in Central Park, Marley collapsed and was rushed to the hospital, where it was discovered that the cancer had metastasized to his brain, lungs, and liver. He continued to reject conventional treatment methods, but once the cancer had spread throughout his entire body, Marley sought alternative treatments in Germany involving certain exercises, ozone injections, and vitamin supplements.

Where Bob Marley Died

Bob marley died shortly after an emergency plane landing in miami, florida.

After pursuing this alternative course of treatment for eight months in Germany, Marley's cancer continued to progress. He decided to head back to his hometown in Jamaica, but during his flight on May 11, 1981, Marley's vital functions went into failure. After his plane made an emergency landing in Miami, Florida, Marley was rushed to Cedars of Lebanon Hospital, where he died shortly after.

A state funeral was held for Marley at the Ethiopian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity followed by the National Arena in Kingston, Jamaica, on May 21, 1981.

Ten days later, a state funeral was held for Marley at the Ethiopian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity followed by the National Arena in Kingston, Jamaica, on May 21, 1981. Marley was laid to rest in a chapel near Nine Mile, Jamaica , where he was born. He was buried with his red Gibson Les Paul guitar, a Bible opened to Psalm 23, and a stalk of marijuana that Rita had placed in the coffin. Jamaican Prime Minister Edward Seaga delivered the final eulogy at Marley's funeral (via Marley Legend: An Illustrated Life of Bob Marley by James Henke):

His voice was an omnipresent cry in our electronic world. His sharp features, majestic looks, and prancing style a vivid etching on the landscape of our minds. Bob Marley was never seen. He was an experience which left an indelible imprint with each encounter. Such a man cannot be erased from the mind. He is part of the collective consciousness of the nation.

What Happened After Bob Marley's Death

Rita marley & the marley family have continued to keep bob marley's legacy alive.

Shortly after Marley's death, his widow, Rita Marley, purchased Jamaica's very first recording studio, Federal Records, where her late husband recorded his first single, "Judge Not," at just 16 years old in 1962. Bob Marley's final album, Confrontation , was released posthumously in 1983 , containing unreleased material including one of his biggest hits to this day, "Buffalo Soldier." Three years later, Rita converted his home into the Bob Marley Museum, which remains a popular tourist attraction in Kingston, Jamaica.

What Happened To Rita Marley After Bob Marley: One Love

That same year, Rita founded the Bob Marley Foundation , a non-profit organization that provides financial aid and resources to underserved Jamaican communities in an effort to eradicate poverty in Jamaica. Along with Bob Marley's kids , Rita has continued his charitable efforts and honored his memory through the Bob Marley Foundation.

In 1994, Bob Marley was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Five years later, Time magazine deemed Exodus the Album of the Century. In February 2001, Marley received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In the decades since, Marley's enduring legacy remains alive as ever, and Bob Marley: One Love serves as a celebration of his indelible impact on music and the world at large.

Kim Zolciak is hitting back at criticism of her clickbait post.

The “Real Housewives of Atlanta” alum wrote via Warped Speed Thursday that she did not “claim” or “allude to” her estranged husband Kroy Biermann’s death by posting a black-and-white photo of them captioned, “R.I.P.”

Although the since-deleted social media upload gave her daughter Ariana, 22, a “damn near … heart attack” on Tuesday, Zolciak told her followers she has “more tact and class and compassion than that.”

The Bravolebrity, 45, defended herself by posting another black-and-white snap with Biermann, 38.

“I am TIRED OF ALL THE LIES and ACCUSATIONS,” she wrote. “EVERY DAY it’s always something new. I’m tired of so much BS being thrown my way. So you want to know ‘what died?’ Here’s the truth.”

The lengthy post Zolciak linked to explained, “I used a picture of BOTH of us and said #RIP — and, frankly, the end of my relationship was like a death of sorts so #RIP to that.

“The story was a tribute to many we’ve lost this past year ,” she continued. “And yes my relationship was lost too so it seemed fitting.”

She told haters offended by the upload to “get serious” and not “jump to conclusions.”

The former reality star asked, “Do you actually think if Kroy died — even with all of the issues we’ve had — my first instinct would be to go to my Instagram and post #LinkInBio with his pic and #RIP attached?

“To reiterate — Kroy is alive and well and did NOT DIE nor did I ever say he has died,” she concluded. “And that’s that.”

Zolciak did not directly address Ariana’s TikTok reaction .

On Tuesday, the influencer asked her followers what “the f–k” they would do in her “situation,” saying, “I physically don’t have any f–king words.”

She appeared near tears in the video while telling her mom, “I love you, but I just, like. … My heart, like, tugging. Like, no.”

Ariana Biermann

The clickbait post was not Zolciak’s first, as she previously implied daughter Brielle, 27, was pregnant in November 2023.

The “Don’t Be Tardy” alum, who is also the mother of KJ, 12, Kash, 11, and twins Kaia and Kane, 10, has been battling mounting debt and multiple lawsuits in the last year while navigating her rocky relationship with Biermann.

The duo filed for divorce in May 2023, only to reconcile two months later — and then file again in August of that same year.

Taylor Swift Is ‘Fired Up’ to Return to ‘Eras Tour’ After ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ Success

Taylor Swift Is Fired Up to Return to Eras Tour After ‘The Tortured Poets Department Success

Taylor Swift is just as excited as her fans to resume her Eras Tour , all thanks to the streaming success of The Tortured Poets Department.

“My mind is blown. I’m completely floored by the love you’ve shown this album,” Swift, 34, wrote via X on Sunday, April 27, sharing snaps from the TTPD recording process. “2.6 million ARE YOU ACTUALLY SERIOUS?? Thank you for listening, streaming, and welcoming Tortured Poets into your life. Feeling completely overwhelmed.”

She continued, “I was already so fired up to get back to the tour but you doing THIS?? May 9th can’t come soon enough.”

Swift released TTPD , her 11th studio album, on April 19 with plenty of tortured poetry about exes Joe Alwyn and Matty Healy , plus declarations of love for now-boyfriend Travis Kelce . The album dropped during Swift’s hiatus from The Eras Tour , which she started in March 2023 to celebrate all of her past records.

While there are sections for most of Swift’s iconic LPs (save for her self-titled debut) and a rotating surprise song part, it is not known if TTPD will make the setlist. Swift’s concert return is set for Thursday, May 9, in Paris before she traverses across Europe and the United Kingdom throughout the spring and summer. In the fall, Swift brings the stage shows back to North America.

Many Swifties do believe TTPD will get a designated Eras section based on a social media video that the pop star shared on Thursday, April 25. In the YouTube Short clip, Swift was seen rehearsing her tour choreography but fans did not recognize the moves from previous shows.

“Why do I feel like these are definitely rehearsal pics for TTPD songs ‘cause when have we ever had the dancers with hats and sticks,” a social media user wrote via X.

Other fans noticed that, at one point, Swift leaned on a railing that featured mystery white letters.

“That’s the TTPD logo on the railing,” one user pointed out via X. “Omg TTPD is getting her own set at The Eras Tour !”

Swift has not commented on the fan theories, but at each show she has mentioned how she’s loved being back on stage for the first time in four years. The summer Eras shows, however, will be bittersweet for the Grammy winner since she’ll be away from Kelce, 34.

Swift and Kelce, who have been dating since summer 2023, spent her tour hiatus together on the West Coast. (After downtime in Los Angeles, they jetted off to Las Vegas for the Saturday, April 27, charity auction hosted by Patrick Mahomes ’ nonprofit. Swift donated four tickets to Eras concerts in the United States.)

“[They have] deepened their bond,” the insider exclusively told Us Weekly earlier this month. “It makes the prospect of her tour more challenging. She’ll be sad, [but] they support and respect [each other]. They have busy careers, so they understand those commitments, as difficult as it is.”

Kelce is expected to attend some of Swift’s overseas shows, telling Entertainment Tonight in April that her London concerts at Wembley Stadium will surely be incredible.
