The Who - I'm The Face - 1964 UK Acetate

(Click on the pictures above to hear a sound sample of each song.)

In 1964, The Who went through several name changes after evolving from The Detours . First they were The Who , then The High Numbers and back to The Who again... Before, they recorded "Zoot Suit" and "I'm The Face" (as The High Numbers ), T he Who recorded these (2) two songs on May 11, 1964 and June 4, 1964, respectively.  As you can quickly tell from the sound sample, this version of " I'm The Face " is very different than the one you are so familiar with. The sample starts from the middle instrumental section of the song to demonstrate the flavor of the differences. " It Was You " is Pete Townshend's very first song! It was released by The Naturals in 1964 and Chaos & Co in 1966, but never by The Who. Hopefully these recordings will see a 2020 official release. You can read all about the acetate story here . Enjoy!

Roger Daltrey, arms wide with a tambourine in each hand, on tour with the Who.

The Who review – rock operas get an orchestral uplift in a show stuffed with classics

Castle Esplanade, Edinburgh Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend are as playful as ever in a crowd-pleasing set featuring strings, brass and, in the audience, thousands of air guitars

‘I want what you’re taking,” Pete Townshend quips, pointing to an enthusiastic fan. “Not again,” retorts Roger Daltrey, comedically rolling his eyes. After six decades of bickering, the two original members of the Who still have compelling onstage friction.

In a loosely buttoned white linen shirt, Daltrey paces stage right, twirling his microphone and winking at the crowd. Townshend keeps firmly to his own half. “The Who? More like who’s left,” the guitarist deadpans, before gesturing at a stage packed with strings, brass and two drum kits: “We replaced Keith Moon with 50 people, so you’re getting your money’s worth.”

The Who Hits Back! tour is built to be a crowd-pleaser, combining orchestral performances of the classic rock operas Tommy and Quadrophenia with a band-only section of pure hits. A majestic opening overture sweeps the Edinburgh crowd to their feet despite the evening’s heavy rain, but the first songs proper, including Tommy’s concise 1921, feel swamped by their expanded rearrangements. It takes Pinball Wizard to bring the energy back. The string section, with lead violinist Katie Jacoby, sounds victorious against Daltrey’s commanding, brassy voice, and Townshend’s iconic riff feels like a drone ringing through the Castle esplanade.

Spiky and electric … Daltrey (left) and Townshend.

Eminence Front locks into a strong groove, but other classics are set to cruise control: Who Are You is buoyed only by the crowd. By the middle of the show, however, the core band find a fresh edge, and a double-header of You Better You Bet and Substitute is spiky and electric. When the orchestra returns for Quadrophenia, it’s a much better match – instrumental The Rock seethes like a Bond theme.

Baba O’Riley, saved for last, is the musical equivalent of a fireworks display: Jacoby finds fresh heat in the outro’s well-loved solo, brandishing her violin at Townshend and dancing playfully with Daltrey. A delighted crowd air-guitars along with her.

The two Whos stay on stage for a softer finale. Tea & Theatre is a saccharine ballad about the band’s legacy, but it’s genuinely poignant when Daltrey sings Townshend’s lyrics directly to him: “We did it all, didn’t we?”

Two-time PGA TOUR winner Ron Cerrudo dies at 79

In his two PGA TOUR victories, Ron Cerrudo left little doubt who was the best player in both of the weeks he walked away with trophies.

Near the end of the 1968 PGA TOUR season, at the Cajun Classic at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, Louisiana, Cerrudo rolled to a four-shot triumph over the duo of Bobby Mitchell and Charlie Sifford. Fifteen months later, at the 1970 San Antonio Open, Cerrudo coasted to a four-stroke, 54-hole lead and went on to rout the field in winning at Pecan Valley Country Club by five shots.

Nailbiters, it seemed, were never a part of the equation for Cerrudo, who died April 24 in his adopted home of South Carolina. He was 79.

Cerrudo played the PGA TOUR full-time from 1968 to 1977, eventually leaving the touring life to become a successful club pro and instructor. Cerrudo, born in Palo Alto, California, on Feb. 4, 1945, was the 1964 California Amateur of the Year. He first attended Chabot Community College in nearby Hayward before transferring to San Jose State, where he led the Spartans to a second-place finish at the 1966 NCAA Championship, four shots behind winner Houston. Cerrudo tied for fifth in the individual competition. He twice earned first-team All-American honors as a Spartan.

In the summer of 1966, at the U.S. Amateur at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania, Cerrudo had a two-foot putt that would have put him in a three-man playoff at a time when the United States Golf Association still used stroke play to determine a champion. Cerrudo admitted he rushed his putt on the 18th green, missed and then watched as Deane Beman defeated Gary Cowan in sudden death.

“It just goes to show you what one careless move can cost you,” Cerrudo later told the Oakland Tribune. “But it taught me a lesson, and maybe it’s for the best.”

A year later, Cerrudo, after finishing third at the U.S. Amateur, represented the U.S. at the Walker Cup against a team from Great Britain & Ireland at Royal St. George’s Golf Club in England. Cerrudo compiled a 1-1-2 record in his four matches as the U.S. retained the Cup.

While still an amateur, Cerrudo had already appeared in four PGA TOUR tournaments, making the cut in all four—his best finish a tie for 13th at the 1967 American Golf Classic in Akron, Ohio. He also played on the weekend at both of his Masters appearances (1966 and 1967). Cerrudo made his professional TOUR debut late in 1967 after two consecutive summers of close calls on the amateur circuit. Besides his third-place finishes at the U.S. Amateur, Cerrudo lost in the finals of The Amateur Championship, 2 & 1, to fellow American Bob Dickson. At the 1966 Western Amateur, Jim Wiechers, bested Cerrudo, 1-up, in the finals at Pinehurst Resort’s No. 2 Course.

Once he turned pro late in the season, Cerrudo made two TOUR starts, tying for 70th at the Hawaiian Open then finishing 11th at the Cajun Classic in Louisiana, a performance that was a harbinger of things to come in the Bayou.

A year later, Cerrudo’s talent was on full display the week before Thanksgiving in Louisiana as he shot rounds of 69-67-66-68—the only player in the field with four sub-70 scores—to win his first title.

“It’s a bigger thrill than anybody knows,” he told the media following his victory. “I was starting to get the feeling of a bridesmaid, wondering if I was ever going to win anything.”

Cerrudo then only waited 15 months to win again, this time in San Antonio. He played the final round with old friend Dick Lotz, also from California. It was a bit of revenge for Cerrudo, who lost to Lotz in the finals of the 1962 California State Amateur.

At Pecan Valley Golf Club, after Lotz had narrowed Cerrudo’s Sunday advantage to one stroke with nine holes to play, Cerrudo made a 20-foot birdie putt at No. 10, he chipped in for birdie at the 12th and rolled in back-to-back birdie putts, starting at No. 14, allowing him to salt away win No. 2.

“You’ve got to be aggressive to win,” he said. “You start playing it safe and the field’s going to go right by you.”

It turned out to be an abbreviated 1970 season for Cerrudo, who took time off after his win to rest his painful back. He eventually underwent surgery in August to repair a ruptured disc but still finished 57th on the money list despite appearing in only 15 tournaments. He closed the following season 81st on the money list, with three top-10s then was 85th in 1972. His lone highlight that season didn’t come in the U.S., however. In December, Cerrudo traveled to Africa to play in the second edition of the Hassan II Golf Trophy in Morocco. He battled Al Geiberger through 72 holes, the two Californians tying at the end of regulation. In the overtime, Cerrudo parred the first hole to Geiberger’s bogey, giving Cerrudo the first-place check of $13,000 and a trophy, a dagger encrusted with 210 diamonds.

Cerrudo’s play and health continued to drop off after that, and he never finished higher than No. 100 in earnings. By 1978, Cerrudo only played seven tournaments.

At the close of the 1970s, he essentially retired from TOUR golf to become the head teaching professional at the Shipyard Golf Club in Hilton Head, South Carolina. After 17 years at Shipyard, Cerrudo accepted a position as the head teaching pro at Port Royal Golf Club, also in Hilton Head, where he remained until 2002 when he moved to Charleston, South Carolina, and the Daniel Island Club. He held that position until his death.

Just three months ago, the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame inducted Cerrudo into its 2024 class.

Cerrudo is survived by his wife of 50 years, Madeline, his daughters, Katherine Erdman and Stacy Artherton, and two siblings, brother Gordon and sister Deborah.

The family will hold a celebration of life on May 10 at the Daniel Island Club.

Stand-Up Star Nikki Glaser Tells Howard Her Unaired Jokes From the Roast of Tom Brady

Entertainer also opens up to howard about spending big bucks on taylor swift tickets and how comedy may have saved her life.

The closest thing stand-up comedy has to a Super Bowl may be a star-studded celebrity roast, as seen on Sunday night when many of the funniest comics in the business competed for laughs while goofing on N.F.L. legend Tom Brady in what has been dubbed “the Greatest Roast of All Time.” No one on the dais was spared as A-list comics and athletes alike sent digs in every direction and, while no official winner was crowned, critics and even guest host Kevin Hart agreed that superstar stand-up Nikki Glaser delivered one of the night’s most unforgettable sets.

So, what did Nikki do after crushing it in the Super Bowl of comedy? The 39-year-old comedian, podcaster, and actress didn’t go to Disney World — she returned to the Stern Show, sitting down with Howard for a riveting conversation covering everything from her long-term boyfriend and how comedy helped her through some of her toughest times to why she spent over $25,000 following Taylor Swift around on her recent tour. Howard and Nikki also discussed the Tom Brady roast, of course, with Nikki revealing who was funnier than she realized, which jokes she couldn’t tell on TV, and why receiving a standing ovation meant so much to her.

the who tour archive

“It’s the biggest crowd I’ve ever performed for. It’s live on Netflix. It’s doing a set I’ve never done in this context,” Nikki told Howard of Sunday night’s performance. “It’s a high risk situation, and I was terrified going into it.”

“You were killing it,” Howard responded before playing clips of a few highlights from the night, including several of Nikki’s funniest barbs and the kind words Hart had for the audience after her set.

Nikki thanked Kevin for being so nice. “I’ll love him forever,” she told Howard of Hart.

The roast was of course more frequently savage than sweet. From Tom Brady’s breakups to his murderous ex-teammates, almost every topic was fair game. However, Nikki and her co-stars did largely steer clear of one subject: “We all collectively decided not to involve his kids too much in anything because they didn’t ask for that,” she told Howard. “So, I couldn’t say, ‘Tom, hopefully we make out at the after party — you can pretend I’m your son.’”

“Were there jokes you left out of your set?” Howard wondered.

“So many,” Nikki responded, explaining that some jokes didn’t hit hard enough while others were cut for time. Thankfully for Stern Show listeners, she debuted some of the cut jokes on the air with Howard on Monday morning.

“Thank you all for being here tonight and taking some time away from cheating on your wives,” Nikki began. “It’s not their fault, it’s their wives’ fault for aging naturally.”

“These guys really fucking damage their bodies and their brains all for the sake of guys hugging each other at a Buffalo Wild Wings,” Glaser continued. “Like, I hope it was worth it fellas.”

The Joke Tom Brady Thought Went Too Far

Tom Brady had dozens of insults hurled his way during Sunday night’s roast and took most of them in stride, but the iconic quarterback did seem to get upset after comedian Jeff Ross set his sights on New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft. The joke in question, which alluded to Kraft’s massage parlor-based legal issues in 2019, led to Brady getting up from his seat and telling Ross to “never say that shit again.” It was one of the most shocking moments of the evening, and Howard wondered if it was real.

“I believe that was for real,” Nikki responded. “Based on the little knowledge I had of [the roast], I think Robert Kraft was not a confirmed guest to be there.”

“I was surprised when Jeff made that joke, but I do think that Tom was actually looking out for him,” she continued, adding that after Jeff’s set the comedian seemed “a little bit worried” he might’ve crossed the line.

“We have consciences about these things, you know? Afterwards we go, ‘Did that really hurt his feelings?’” Nikki concluded. “[Tom] had to do it performatively for Robert … but I’m sure it’s not an issue Jeff is gonna hear about today.”

How Stand-Up Comedy Saved Her Life

Though Nikki was able to quit drinking with the help of a book, she had to rely on a 12-step program to deal with a separate issue — the eating disorder she developed when she was just a teenager. When the young Glaser was once too nervous to eat because she was going on a date with a crush of hers, a fellow classmate paid her a compliment. “The next day this girl … was like, ‘Nikki, you look amazing,’” she said before recalling how things soon spun out of control. “And then we graduated, and I was hospitalized … I really wanted to die, and I was going to.”

Fortunately, when a college friend signed her up to perform on a campus comedy show, Nikki found a beacon of hope. “I called my dad, and I was like, ‘I know what I want to do — I found it,’” the comedian remembered. “The next day I called the counseling service at CU Boulder, and I said, ‘I have an eating disorder and I want to get help for it.’”

Glaser continued. “I was like, ‘Okay, I’ve got to beat this because now I have something I actually want to do and I’m good at — something to live for.’”

Still, Nikki wasn’t sure exactly what to do for that first show — so she looked it up. “I typed in ‘stand-up comedy woman’ and Sarah Silverman pops up,” she noted. “I loved comedy but not in a way that I saw an ‘in’ … and then when I saw Sarah Silverman it was just like, ‘Okay, that’s it — that’s what I’m going to do.’”

When Glaser speaks to young comics, she advises them to do what she did — pretend they’re writing for their favorite comic. “I just wrote jokes like I was writing for Sarah, and I definitely had a knack for writing one-liner jokes,” the roast veteran explained.

Nikki’s Relationship With Her Boyfriend

Sober for over a decade, Nikki said she was dependent on alcohol for much of her 20s as a coping tool, especially with relationships. “I think it really helped with nerves … but it mostly helped with sex,” she confessed to Howard. “I’ve always had this fear of I’m going to be bad at this … and then it just took that away.”

Upon quitting drinking, it would be two years before the comedian had sex again. “I went from like hooking up pretty frequently to not kissing anyone, not doing anything,” she recalled. “I’m still with the first person that I hooked up with after I quit drinking because I really had to get to know him and really like him and crave him sexually in a way that wasn’t just brought on by being drunk.”

The relationship, with producer Chris Convy, has been off and on for a decade — something she addresses in her latest special, “Nikki Glaser: Someday You’ll Die,” which premieres May 11 on HBO. “Forever makes me think of no other adventures, it’s just kind of admitting defeat,” Nikki explained to Howard of her own commitment issues.

Another difficult aspect of their relationship in the past, as Glaser admitted, was that she wasn’t always honest with her partner. “I thought getting a boyfriend meant just like being agreeable,” she said. “I never, ever complained about anything … and then I’d air those complaints on podcasts … he eventually heard them and [went], ‘I don’t recognize who this person is.’”

These days, the couple is in a much better place. “He really got me to stop lying,” the comedian noted. “I’m not perfect at it because I still fear abandonment, so there are some issues in our relationship where … I’ll just give the answer that I think he wants.”

Nikki Spent Over $25,000 Following Taylor Swift on Tour

As a Taylor Swift superfan, Nikki was dismayed when a soundbite of her critiquing Taylor’s appearance made its way into the 2020 documentary “Taylor Swift: Miss Americana.” “I was mouthing off on some interview about her in a way that was not kind, but it was me being jealous and feeling like I couldn’t be friends with her,” Nikki told Howard. “Then it comes out in the documentary that she was anorexic. I was like, ‘What the fuck?’”

“I was commenting on somebody’s body who has the same fucking thing I did. It was so grotesque, so I issued an apology on Instagram,” Glaser continued, adding, “She wrote back to me in the comments — like, ‘Thank you so much. This means so much to me.’”

Nikki’s love for Taylor has only grown since then. She told Howard she spent over $25,000 following her around on her last tour. The decision was made after she realized she no longer wanted to freeze her eggs, which would’ve cost a lot of money. “I was [considering] freezing my eggs in case I break up with my boyfriend — who I don’t plan on breaking up with — and I meet a guy who refuses to adopt … and then I felt sad about it, so I said, ‘I’m not doing this’ … and that’s when the tour was announced,” Nikki told Howard.

It was the boyfriend who encouraged Nikki to indulge her inner-Swiftie. “He said … ‘Who knows when she will [go on tour] again? It’s the thing that brings you the most joy … Taylor Swift is your life … Go to every chance you have.’ So, I did,” Glaser recalled, adding, “I was on [my comedy] tour last year … I did at least like 60 different cities, and I also went to 12 different cities for Taylor Swift. I went on like two tours.”

Speaking of boyfriends, Howard wondered how Nikki felt about Taylor’s relationship with football star Travis Kelce.

“It’s so hard for something with that much attention to last, but I hope it lasts forever, and I really like him for her,” Nikki concluded.

“The Roast of Tom Brady” is available now on Netflix. “Nikki Glaser: Someday You’ll Die” premieres May 11 on HBO.

Local golfing legend Jay Don Blake to play in Black Desert Championship, his 500th PGA Tour event

the who tour archive

ST. GEORGE — Longtime pro golfer Jay Don Blake of St. George has been granted a PGA Tour exemption to compete at the Black Desert Championship this fall.

the who tour archive

The 65-year-old Blake received the news on Tuesday morning when Patrick Manning, managing partner of Black Desert Resort, presented him with a framed exemption certificate on the course’s practice green.

The special moment came as a complete surprise to Blake, Manning said as he explained how he was able to lure Blake out to the course early in the morning, along with more than 15 of his family members.

“Greater Zion had filmed a documentary, an hourlong documentary on the rise of golf in this region, culminating in a PGA Tour stop at Black Desert,” Manning told St. George News. “I told Greater Zion that they should reach back out to Jay Don, because that documentary was filmed a while ago, and tell him that they forgot to get a picture for the documentary of him and his entire family, all of his kids and grandkids. That way, we could get them all out there on the Black Desert putting green.

“And so, while they were posing for pictures, I came up behind Jay Don and presented him with an exemption certificate to get him his 500th Tour start. It was a really, really cool moment.”

Manning said Blake was “very surprised” at the news.

“He cried. His family cried. It was pretty awesome,” Manning added.

Blake told St. George News that he and his wife had gone out to the course around 5:30 a.m. to get ready to do “a little bit of camera work.”

“They (the photographers) wanted to get some stuff with my wife, who has been my caddy,” Blake explained. “She carried my clubs for 10 years on the Champions Tour.”

the who tour archive

Unbeknownst to Blake and his wife, a number of other family members who had been made aware of the surprise ahead of time, began to gather on the putting green.

Blake said as he drove the cart up to the putting green, he didn’t realize who was there at first.

“I went, ‘Wait, that’s my whole family,’” he recalled. “I had my kids and grandkids out there, about 17 or 18 of our family members. And you know, I kind of realized, when I saw my family there, I can get what’s kind of going on and what’s gonna happen. I got pretty emotional, you know, teary-eyed and excited.”

Manning said he’s been working on getting an exemption for Blake since last year, right after it was first announced that Black Desert Resort would be hosting a PGA Tour event in the fall of 2024.

The Black Desert Championship, which will be part of the PGA’s FedExCup Fall series, is scheduled for Oct. 9-13, Manning said.

“I thought it was a really good story, with Jay Don being born and raised in St. George and having a successful career in the PGA but falling short by one Tour start to get his 500th,” Manning said. “So I’ve been working on trying to get him an exemption into our tournament for nearly a year. We finally got approval from the PGA about a week ago.”

Blake called the moment a “pretty neat deal.”

“It’s a milestone to accomplish getting 500 PGA Tour events, and to top it all off, to have it be in my hometown,” he said.

Blake said he’s looking forward to playing competitively on the Black Desert course.

“I’ve played it three times,” he said. “Every time I go out there, I see new things, different things. Man, it’s a beautiful golf course.”

“It has some holes that are very demanding, where if you don’t hit the green grass, you’re going to be in that black lava rock and you can’t ever find your ball again,” Blake added with a chuckle. “But all in all, they’ve done a great job with (the) design of the golf course and I think the players are really going to enjoy it.”

Blake said he plans to get more familiar with the course over the next several months.

“I’ll definitely get out there quite a few more times, map it out and kind of get a little bit more accustomed to where to hit it and where not to,” he added. “And just kind of learn the greens a little bit.”
