The OG Wiggles announce 2022 tour with DZ Deathrays & Polish Club

A collage of OG Wiggles, DZ Deathrays, and Polish Club

  • X (formerly Twitter)

The iconic children's entertainers are hopping in the Big Red Car and hitting the road with some of the nation's best live rock acts.

The original line-up of The Wiggles - Anthony Field, Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt and Greg Page - are getting back together (again), for a 2022 tour marking their 30th anniversary.

Hitting arenas in capital cities from February, the 18+ shows, The OG Wiggles will perform all their '90s classics, with cameos from pals Captain Feathersword, Dorothy The Dinosaur, Wags The Dog, and Henry The Octopus.

What's really got our fingers waggling though is the promise of a "wild support act" at each show.

Joining the fun will be Brisbane riff lords DZ Deathrays, who are heading out on their own tour next year, and Sydney's Polish Club, fresh from releasing Now We're Cookin. There's more supports to be announced closer to the tour as well.

View all the dates and details below. Tickets are up for grabs from 22 October and find more info at The Wiggles website .

“ It will be The Wiggles as you remember and love them, but we’ll all have a bit more grey hair… and there’s a bar," said Red Wiggle Murray Cook. You might recall Murray has collaborated with DZ Deathrays on the live stage before...

Oh, and in case you've just come out of hibernation: OG Wiggles Murray, Jeff, and Anthony hit the Like A Version studio earlier this year, helping current Wiggles Emma, Lachie and Simon take on Tame Impala's 'Elephant'.

This year has been an extraordinary one for the Wiggles, which won triple j’s Hottest 100 for the first time; landed a No. 1 album on the ARIA Chart (also a first), sold out Australasian arenas with their children’s Fruit Salad TV Big Show Tour and adult’s OG Reunion Tour; and scooped the Ted Albert Award for outstanding service to Australian music (a first for a kid’s entertainment act). They’re set to appear on the September cover of Rolling Stone Australia magazine, out next week.

The Wiggles – ‘ReWiggled’ review: Stella Donnelly, Spacey Jane and more pitch in for a sunny yet strange covers album

The beloved children’s entertainers receive charming covers from the likes of The Chats and DZ Deathrays, but drop the ball on their own renditions of Fatboy Slim and Queen

Wiggles covers album ReWiggled The Chats San Cisco Stella Donnelly Spacey Jane

Is there an Australian group more beloved yet still underrated than The Wiggles ?

Generations have grown up on the entertainers’ songs, but the band arguably still deserve more credit for their musicianship. Both Anthony Field and Jeff Fatt were in ’80s pub-rockers The Cockroaches, while Murray Cook continues to play and tour to this day, most recently as part of The Soul Movers. They’ve also become prime purveyors of children’s music, which at its best never talks down to its younger audience while remaining simple, catchy and therefore accessible.

The first disc of ‘ReWiggled’, dedicated to Australian artists covering The Wiggles’ songs, speaks to both their influence and compositional chops. Not only are there younger artists here that would have inevitably grown up on the group ( San Cisco , The Chats ), but also musicians that are now parents themselves and sharing The Wiggles’ music with their kids ( Luca Brasi , Emily Wurramara ).

It’s a fun listen, kicking off with Cook’s good friends DZ Deathrays tearing into ‘Hot Potato’ with mosh-ready abandon before turning to Spacey Jane’s cheery indie-pop ode to everyone’s favourite rose-eating dinosaur, ‘D.O.R.O.T.H.Y.’ Elsewhere, AMP-shortlisted soul singer Emma Donovan sounds right at home on ‘Say the Dance, Do the Dance’, while Polish Club shake their sillies out on the wonderfully nonsensical ‘Apples and Bananas’. Throw in the dreamy French-pop whimsy of Stella Donnelly’s ‘Ba Ba Da Bicycle Ride’, and ‘ReWiggled’ is off to a seriously promising start.

The only cover that falls short is former Eurovision contestant Dami Im , who completely misunderstands the assignment. Her piano version of ‘Big Red Car’, one of the group’s signature songs, seems to lose most of the original lyrics and its all-important chorus.

Recommended

Things get a little dicier on the second disc. After the stunning success of their triple j Like a Version cover of Tame Impala’s ‘Elephant’ – which ended up topping the Hottest 100 of 2021 – the group were compelled to head back to the well and try their hand at a few more covers. Some of them are perfectly charming: A cover of The Chats’ ‘Pub Feed’, in exchange for their punky take on ‘Can You (Point Your Fingers And Do The Twist?)’, is guaranteed to raise a smile, as is new-era Wiggles Simon Price (Red) and Emma Watkins (formerly Yellow) duetting on The White Stripes ’ ‘We’re Going to Be Friends’.

Other choices, however, ring as absolutely bizarre, such as an unremarkable rendition of Fatboy Slim’s ‘Praise You’ and James Brown’s ‘Get On The Good Foot’, which new Yellow Wiggle Tsehay Hawkins is awkwardly placed on.

There are also some wincing reminders that the Wiggles are ultimately still making music for minors: Price hums his way through the part in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ where the protagonist confesses murder, while mainstay Wiggle Anthony Field says he wants to eat something “ healthy ”, not “ greasy ”, in ‘Pub Feed’.

On the flipside, the lyrics to AC/DC’s ‘Thunderstruck’ – including the lines “ We met some girls/Some dancers who gave a good time ” and “ I was shaking at the knees/Could I come again, please? ” – have inexplicably been kept completely intact. There’s a novelty to hearing childhood musical heroes faithfully delivering rock ’n’ roll innuendo, but the Wiggles’ logic here feels inconsistent.

Even with these shortcomings, there’s more than enough substance across the ‘ReWiggled’ project to deem it worthy of exploration. As they have done for decades, the Wiggles are here to entertain.

The Big Story Behind David Byrne’s Big Suit in ‘Stop Making Sense’

You may ask yourself, why the big suit?

The Big Picture

  • Stop Making Sense is celebrated as the greatest concert film ever, showcasing Talking Heads' most iconic songs.
  • David Byrne's symbolic big suit in the film represents self-expression and artful rejection of conventions.
  • Byrne's inspired big suit was crafted to make his head appear smaller and body bigger, enhancing his uncanny appearance.

Concert films are a storied, celebrated way to experience your favorite band's work in a different light. They've had a resurgence in popularity recently with the successful releases of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour and Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé . But an older one had a decent comeback at the box office last autumn, and is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Stop Making Sense , the Talking Heads concert film that covered their 1983 tour, was directed by Jonathan Demme and released the following year in 1984. 40 years after its release, it is still considered the greatest concert film of all time by many critics and fans.

Stop Making Sense

Considered by critics as the greatest concert film of all time, the live performance was shot over the course of three nights at Hollywood's Pantages Theater in December of 1983 and features Talking Heads' most memorable songs.

What Happens in 'Stop Making Sense'?

Stop Making Sense sees David Byrne , Tina Weymouth , Jerry Harrison , and Christ Frantz , the core line-up throughout Talking Heads' historical run, joined by a variety of backing musicians (including legendary keyboardist Bernie Worrell ) for an electrifying performance that made audiences cheer, dance, and let loose whether watched from the crowd, in a theater, or on the couch at home. Despite being a fairly minimalist production, one wardrobe choice made by Byrne resulted in what may be the most iconic, pervasive image in the history of concert films: the big suit.

Byrne waltzed onto stage with this giant, gray business suit toward the end of the show for only one full number, before slowly removing pieces of it and returning to his normal attire. But the image of the big suit, which was used on the film's poster and the live album artwork, has persevered ever since.

Why Did David Byrne Wear a Big Suit in 'Stop Making Sense'?

Throughout Stop Making Sense , most of the costume choices are fairly minimal. Byrne wears a plain, gray wardrobe. Many of the band members are in solid-colored t-shirts, so the one big choice Byrne makes with this iconic costume change really stands out.

Byrne's idea for the big suit was inspired by Japanese theatre . Byrne explained to Entertainment Weekly in a 2012 Q&A that a remark from his friend about the figuratively larger nature of a theatrical performance got him thinking about a literal expansion of the size of the performer. During the 1980s, Byrne spent time in Japan, seeing many forms of Japanese theatre, including noh and kabuki, styles that traditionally involve large, boxy costumes . Byrne translated this concept into a more contemporary style, sketching a boxy business suit that he would hand off to Gail Blacker , the tour's costume designer.

Blacker brought the costume to life, taking Byrne's design and crafting a gray business suit with massive proportions. The suit was held up by a frame on Byrne's shoulders, so most of the fabric was loosely hanging around him, enabling it to shake in a fluid motion as Byrne danced. Byrne explained in 1984 while promoting the film: "I wanted my head to appear smaller and the easiest way to do that was to make my body bigger." It is certainly a successful effect, as Byrne's uncanny, cartoonish appearance in the suit makes for the most memorable moment in the film.

The 'Stop Making Sense' Big Suit is a Celebration of Self-Expression

David Byrne frequently explores the oddities of the seemingly mundane aspects of American life throughout his work. His songwriting often affixes him within the world, not as a participant, but as an alien observer trying to make sense of everything around him. The most basic functions, like grocery shopping or commuting to work, are viewed through a curious, sincere lens that highlights how strange and beautiful the things we take for granted in life can be.

Stop Making Sense follows through on the notion of Byrne as an outsider , with a loose, unspoken arc that sees him begin the show with jerky, uncomfortable movements and a nervous demeanor before slowly letting go of his discomfort, and finding comfort in expressing himself through a communal act of music-making. Byrne has been open about living with autism and struggling to socially engage with people around him. Throughout the performance, he drops his masking to reveal a live-wire, expressive performance. It is in these moments that the show really soars, and that Byrne seems most at home .

You May Ask Yourself, What’s So Special About Talking Heads’ ‘Stop Making Sense’?

In this way, Stop Making Sense is, well, exactly what the title implies: an exercise in rejecting conventions, and embracing self-expression. Is there a better means to convey this notion than a business suit, a simple image that evokes authority, uniformity, and rigidity , being contorted into a caricature of itself? Within the billowing suit, Byrne loosely wiggles around on stage while performing "Girlfriend is Better," the song that lends the film its title. Byrne's awkward, unconventional dance moves take on a larger-than-life quality in the suit, as it acts as a flowing extension of his movements that exaggerates every step. The suit makes it all the more clear how much the music is freeing Byrne up, smoothing out his movements in an entrancing fashion.

Is the suit a visual metaphor for a conflict between expectations to conform and the inner desire to break free of those limitations? Or are we overthinking it by attempting to attach any meaning to a work of art that is telling us pointedly to not make sense of it? Either way, the big suit is a compelling image, and one that has taken on a life of its own. A24 utilized the suit throughout the marketing of their 40th-anniversary re-release (which is getting a 4K Blu-ray release this summer), and Byrne seems to embrace it as a symbol that is irrevocably attached to his artistic persona. All this time later, Byrne's dancing, the incredible music, and that big gray suit comprise what is the greatest concert film ever made.

Stop Making Sense is available to stream on Max in the U.S.

Jonas Brothers to Perform 'Five Albums Every Night' on Massive Tour Kicking Off This Summer

The band's upcoming The Album drops May 12

If any Jonas Brothers fans missed seeing Nick , Joe and Kevin on tour for their favorite album, now's the chance to make up for lost time.

On Tuesday, the band announced Five Albums. One Night. The Tour., a string of 35 North American concerts kicking off this summer that'll presumably see them perform songs from 2007's Jonas Brothers , 2008's A Little Bit Longer , 2009's Lines, Vines and Trying Times , 2019's Happiness Begins and The Album , which drops May 12.

Launching Aug. 12 at Yankee Stadium in New York City, the tour will make stops in cities including Boston, Toronto, Detroit, Austin, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Houston, Nashville and more before wrapping Oct. 14 at the Kaseya Center in Miami.

"It's official!" wrote the band on social media alongside the tour announcement. "Let's go!"

Tickets will first become available through Ticketmaster's Verified Fan presale, and fans can register to participate through 11:59 p.m. ET on May 6 before it opens on May 9. Additional presale tickets for most dates will go on sale for Citi cardmembers and Verizon customers from May 10 at 10 a.m. local time through May 11 at 10 p.m. local time.

VIP packages will also be available for the tour, which is sponsored by EVO ICL , a company that "provides vision correction in harmony with your natural eye, and can deliver sharp, clear vision day or night without causing dry eye syndrome," per a press release.

Jonas Brothers' Five Albums. One Night. The Tour arrives shortly after the band performed a series of worldwide underplay concerts as well as a 5-night Broadway residency, during which they performed one of their five most recent albums in full each night.

Last month, the band appeared on SiriusXM's Radio Andy to discuss the Yankee Stadium shows, which were announced ahead of the full tour. They confirmed that they'll perform "pretty much every song from all the albums" during the concert.

"Correct, a 17-hour show," joked Joe, 33, when host Andy Cohen asked for clarification.

Nick, 30, explained that the Broadway residency served as the blueprint for the upcoming shows. "For those that don't know, we basically played five nights and picked a different album that we spotlit for the first act of the show," he said.

"We played it in its entirety," Nick continued. "Which, for a lot of these songs, we've never even played them or we hadn't played them in 15-plus years."

He said they "had so much fun doing that," they got on a call a few days later to discuss how they could incorporate "another version" of the residency into their tour.

The brothers plan to "play the familiar songs from each album" with medleys and new versions of some songs.

"Someone could say, 'Oh, that's gonna be a really long show,' but the reality is that when some of these earlier albums came out, we were teenagers with tons of energy," Nick noted. "And so the tempo of the songs are a little faster... So, it's actually not gonna be that long."

Kevin recalled the first night of their Broadway residency, "We got off the stage, and we were like, 'Wow, that was a very fast set.' Everything was really quick."
