Siberian Tiger Mauls Woman After She Gets Out of Car; How Aggressive Are Big Cats? [WATCH]

Video of Tiger Mauling a Woman After She Gets Out of Car to Argue With Husband at Beijing Animal Park Resurfaces; How Aggressive Are Big Cats?

A family got in trouble when an unexpected guest joined in their argument. A couple was reportedly fighting when a tiger attacked the woman.

Tiger Attacks a Woman

A Twitter   video went viral, featuring an unexpected encounter between humans and a fierce tiger. According to Crazy Clips in the caption, the woman exited the car during an argument with her husband in a safari park.

In the video, the car stops, and the woman immediately gets off the car. The driver - her husband - opens the door on his side.

They talk or probably argue while she stands outside the car until a huge Siberian tiger approaches the woman and attacks her. The big cat drags her out of the frame of the camera.

The husband and another woman ran out of the car to rescue her.

The post has garnered 2.6 million views, 2.5 retweets, and over 20,000 likes. Several netizens also reacted to the clip.

Steve Parker suggested   that the couple should have kept their argument in the car. Lord Flacko Slim said   it was "natural selection."

Another jokingly commented  that the moral of the story was for women to wait to get home before they yell at their husbands and not do it on the grounds of "the eye of the tiger" at lunchtime in the jungle.

What Really Happened in the Video?

The incident happened in 2016. According to The New York Times , the family was in a Beijing animal park, Badaling Wildlife World, in a section that allows people to drive their vehicles.

Her husband and the other woman - who was later identified as the woman's mother - jumped out in an attempt to rescue her. The woman who was first attacked was badly injured, but her mom, who tried to save her, was mauled to death.

The husband was uninjured, and so did their child, who remained inside the vehicle.

How Aggressive Are Tigers?

The outlet noted that the tiger that attacked the woman could be a Siberian tiger, which is the largest cat in the world, according to Jack of Science . Siberian tigers are considered more powerful and bigger than Bengal tigers.

They can weigh up to 660 pounds. Aside from being heavier and larger, Siberian tigers have long claws, which gives them an edge.

In general, although tigers are seen as a threat, they are elusive and would rather avoid humans. However, they tend to be aggressive and irritable when they are ill, injured, or can't hunt properly, according to Biology Dictionary .

Tigers are both fascinating and frightful beings. John Vaillant tells the story of Vladimir Markov, a hunter, and poacher in Far Eastern Russia, in his novel " The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival ."

The gripping story detailed how a man-eating tiger was killing people in a remote village. The deadly predator was cunning, injured, and starving.

Vaillant also recounted how Markov wounded a tiger with a gunshot before snatching some of its prey.

The wounded tiger followed the hunter, searched his hut, and awaited his return home before killing and devouring him. The unusual instance shows the tiger waiting up to two days for the hunter before killing him, seemingly out of retaliation.

Mom Killed After Trying to Save Her Daughter From Horrific Tiger Attack in Safari Park

From Good Housekeeping

A mother has died after trying to save her daughter from a tiger attack at a drive-through animal park in Beijing, The New York Times reports . The two women, along with the daughter's husband and the couple's child, were visiting the Badaling Wildlife World park when the attack occurred.

According to the Times , a Beijing news source has reported that the younger woman left the car after an argument with her husband. In the below video, which was captured by a park surveillance camera, you can see her exit from the passenger door and walk around to the other side of the vehicle. Within seconds, a tiger attacks, and the woman's husband and mother run after her in an attempt to save her.

Although park workers were on the scene nearly immediately after the attack (which you can also see in the surveillance camera footage), they were not able to save the woman's mother. The younger woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and her husband remained unharmed, the Times reports. The couple's child, who stayed in the vehicle during the time of the attack, was also unharmed.

Badaling Wildlife World visitors are prohibited from exiting their vehicles and warned to keep their car doors locked and windows closed, NBC News reports , but this isn't the first time that the park has seen a tragic animal-related death. A park employee was killed by an elephant in March, and a security guard, who had stepped out of a patrol vehicle, was killed by a tiger in 2014, according to the Times .

USA Today reports that the Yanqing County government is currently investigating the incident.

‘Battle at Kruger’: The Ultimate Game Drive Footage

Watch ‘battle at kruger’ – lions v buffalo v crocodile.

‘Battle at Kruger’ is perhaps the most epic homemade safari video ever filmed. It’s also one of the most viewed, having raked up 83 million views on YouTube!

The now-legendary video was caught on camera in South Africa’s Kruger National Park in autumn 2004 by an amateur whilst on a guided safari game drive , just meters from the action.

Chevron employee David Budzinski was on holiday in Kruger National Park with his friend Jason Schlosberg, and ended up filming what any professional wildlife cameraman would see as the pinnacle of their career. It’s no wonder that the clip has so many YouTube views, and been featured in TIME magazine , National Geographic, and countless other wildlife websites and publications.

If you’ve not yet seen it, set aside eight minutes right now to watch this epic animal confrontation. Not for the faint-hearted, the eight-and-a-half-minute clip shows a graphic struggle for survival between a herd of buffalo , a small pride of lions , and some opportunistic crocodiles in the water.

Watch the full ‘Battle at Kruger’ video:

Most viewers will be rooting for the buffalo calf, but it’s also a powerful vision of the relationships between different animals and within a herd. Could you imagine the feeling of actually being there while this tale played out in front of your 4×4? It’s dramatic enough on the computer screen!

The video starts with a pair of adult buffalo with a calf leading a large herd alongside a river. From a distance, a group of four lions are resting and watching, and quickly assume a stalking position. Moments later the lions ambush the buffalo, sending them running, and pulling the baby buffalo into the water shallow water.

The lions quickly surround the baby buffalo in the water, biting its neck in an effort to kill it. They calmly pull the buffalo onto the riverbank but are ambushed by a pair of crocodiles, one of which bites the buffalo’s rear end, and a tug of war between lions and crocodile ensues. The lions eventually win and drag the buffalo on to dry land, where they settle down to tuck into a meal.

At this point, a large buffalo herd in formation slowly approaches the lions, and a couple of the braver males make charges at the lions. At one point a lion is flung high in the air on a buffalo’s horns, and one of the lions runs away.

A group of buffalos then advances to touching distance of the lions, at which point – miraculously – the baby buffalo stands up and runs back into the herd, seemingly OK. The remaining lions are then chased off one by one, and the video ends.

Two tigers fight fierce battle at safari park in South Africa. Old video goes viral

An old video of a fierce battle between two tigers is doing the rounds of the internet and swiftly going viral again. Sudha Ramen of the Indian Forest Services tweeted the short clip on Friday and it has garnered around 3,000 views so far.

Shot at the Tiger Canyons, a wildlife and safari park in South Africa, the two tigers engaged in a brutal battle and wrestled with each other for a prolonged period of time. Neither of them was willing to concede defeat.

In the meantime, another tiger, made an attempt to gauge the scenario as it treaded the battleground. However, it understood that it might be futile to intervene, and eventually left the spot.

"Ever seen tigers fighting, it is no less than wrestling. The dominance will be established only through such fights. The winner wins the territory and if lucky, the tigress too. The loser has to move out and wander to find a new home," Sudha Ramen said in the caption of her post.

The sight of watching two tigers engaging in a fierce fight is a mesmerising one. India Forest Services (IFS) officer Susanta Nanda took to Twitter to share a video of a wild tiger fighting with a safari tiger. The video was shot at Bannerghatta National Park in Karnataka.

"If the human relationship in this world were as strong as this fence. Wild tiger fights with a safari tiger at Bannerghatta, Karnataka (sic)," Nanda wrote while sharing the video.

The two tigers in the video were identified as T-67 and M-3 by the Kanha Reserve. The park said that they "often wander in the Ksili and Sarhi zones of the reserve. They must have crossed each other’s ways, thereby leading to the big fight."

Last year, a similar video from Ranthambore National Park. The two tiger brother T57 and T58 were fighting over a female tigress named Noor T39.

Woman Attacked by Tiger When She Stepped Out of Car ‘After Argument’ Video: Fact Check

CarToq Editor

A horrifying tiger attack at a Beijing safari park left a woman injured and her mother dead after they stepped out of their car during a tour of the park. The incident recently went viral on the internet, and we checked its veracity.

The incident is real, but it is not new. The tiger attack happened in 2016, at China’s Badaling Wildlife World. The incident occurred at a tiger safari park where visitors can drive through and view various exotic animals in a more natural setting. The 32-year-old woman, identified only by her surname, Zhao, reportedly got out of her car after an argument with her husband. Security camera footage captured the moment a tiger pounced on her, dragging her away from the vehicle.

We do not know why the woman got out of the car. While the Internet was quick to blame her for doing it after an argument with husband, her family later said that she stepped out ebcause she felt car-sick.

In the video, we can see that Zhao steps out of the right side of the car, walks around the front of the car, and opens the left-side door. Then, startled, she looks behind her and within seconds, a huge tiger pounces on her, dragging her out of view of the camera. A man jumps out of the car, looks confused and tries to run after the woman. A woman – the woman’s mother jumps out of the rear seat and runs after the tiger and her daughter.

Woman Attacked by Tiger When She Stepped Out of Car ‘After Argument’ Video: Fact Check

We do not know exactly what happened afterward, but Zhao escaped (maybe because her mother distracted the tiger). Zhao’s 57-year-old mother, surnamed Li , however was attacked by another tiger when she was outside and seriously injured. We can see park rangers arriving at the scene in the video immediately aftewards, but Li died from her injuries before medical help could be provided.

Almost everyone blamed Zhao in the aftermath of the incident. She had sustained serious injuries in the attack, and later filed a lawsuit against the Beijing Wild Animal Park, alleging negligence and failure to provide adequate safety measures to protect visitors. The lawsuit seeks compensation for medical expenses, mental anguish, and the loss of her mother.

Woman Attacked by Tiger When She Stepped Out of Car ‘After Argument’ Video: Fact Check

Zharo said in an interview that she stepped out because she felt car-sick. And that while she signed a document exonerating the park of any responsibility in any such accident, she had not read it as no one asked her to read it before they started driving through the park. This explanation did not satisfy most in China, who thought the explanation was rubbish and shirking all responsibility.

The park has faced criticism in the past for its safety procedures, with some questioning whether the animals’ enclosures are secure enough. The latest incident has reignited the debate over the safety of these types of attractions and prompted calls for stricter regulations.

The tiger enclosure was temporarily closed to visitors and later re-opened. We do know that the case went to court, but there is no information on a verdict or whether the woman received any compensation. The park had expressed its willingness to offer compensation out of ‘compassion’ but not because of any legala obligation to do the same.

Several instances of people beign careless dring wildlife safaris have come out over the years – and in India too, people have behaved irresponsibly with wild elephants and tigers.

A Brutal Fight Between Two Tigers In This Video Going Viral Again

Two tigers in a brutal fight in this video from South Africa.

A dramatic video that is going viral on social media shows a fierce fight between two male tigers. The seven-year-old video resurfaced on Twitter this morning after being shared by Indian Forest Service officer Sudha Ramen, who explained that these big cats establish dominance through such fights.

The video was filmed by Helena Watkins at the Tiger Canyon wildlife and safari park in South Africa in 2013. While the original clip on YouTube has garnered a whopping 7 million views, various versions of it have cropped up on social media again and again over the years - going viral for the video's shock value.

The clip shows a fight between two male tigers that lasts several minutes. The two tigers growl, scratch and wrestle with each other in their bid to establish dominance. Male tigers clash to defend their territory, and it is the most common reason for fights. Tiger fights also occur for mating rights with a female.

"Ever seen tigers fighting, it is no less than wrestling. The dominance will be established only through such fights," wrote Ms Ramen while sharing the video. "The winner wins the territory and if lucky the tigress too. The loser has to move out and wander to find a new home," she added.

Take a look at the video below:

"The first 10 seconds were far worse than any other fight I've seen," wrote one commenter, while another said: "Those scratch noises are painful to listen to."

This is not the only time that a brutal tiger fight has captured social media's attention. Last year, IFS officer Parveen Kaswan also shared a video of two Ranthambore tigers in a violent territorial clash.

Understanding Bengal Tiger: How Tigers Communicate

  • April 29, 2023

tiger communication in jungle

Bengal tigers, also known as Indian tigers, are the most common subspecies of untamed tigers. They are reclusive and territorial creatures, Bengal tigers communicate with one another in a variety of ways. Communication is vital to their survival because it allows them to avoid conflict and locate potential prey.

Bengal tigers use vocalizations such as growls, roars, and groans to communicate. In the dense jungle, these vocalizations can be heard up to three kilometers distant. They also use body language, such as tail movements, ear placement, and facial expressions, to communicate. These signals express a variety of emotions, ranging from aggression to submission.

Tigers of the Bengal subspecies also use scent marking as a means of communication. Tigers designate their territory with urine and feces to assert their dominance and deter other tigers from entering. Additionally, they use scent signatures to find potential partners.

In this blog post, we will dive deep to learn the different ways Bengal tigers communicate with each other.

The Roar of the Tiger: Vocal Communication Among Tigers

The tiger’s roar is a mighty sound that can be heard from distances away. Their bellow is one of the most recognizable noises in the animal kingdom. Tigers can produce roars as strong as 114 decibels, which is higher than a chainsaw. Tiger roars can differ in pitch, with deeper roars typically signifying a larger, more dominant animal.

The distance a tiger roar can travel in a national park depends on a number of factors, including the terrain, the weather, and the presence of other noises that may interfere with the roar. Tiger roars can sometimes be heard up to three miles away, allowing them to communicate over great distances.

Tiger roars are significant because they serve as a means of communication. Tigers use their growl to announce their presence and territory to other tigers in the area. Tigers frequently use their growl to alert potential intruders that they are entering the territory of another tiger. This aids in conflict prevention and reduces the likelihood of injury or fatality.

In addition to its function in territorial communication, the tiger’s roar is also used during the breeding season to entice partners. Female tigers are known to respond to males’ roars, with the volume and pitch of the roar indicating the male’s size and ferocity.

Tigers produce a variety of sounds, including roars, growls, groans, sighs, and snarls. Each vocalization has a unique significance and is employed in various contexts. Tigers, for instance, may bellow to communicate over long distances with other tigers, whereas snarls and groans may be used during close-range interactions or confrontations.

Smells Like a Tiger: Scent Marking and Olfactory Communication

Scent marking and smell-based communication are important parts of a Bengal tiger’s behavior because they help set and keep area limits. Tigers use different kinds of smell marking to talk to other tigers in the area and show that they own their territory.

Urine spraying is one of the most popular ways to leave a smell mark. Tigers mark their territory by spraying their pee on trees, bushes, rocks, and other things. This leaves a smell that lets other animals know they own the area. Male tigers also have scent glands near their anus, which they use to mark their area by rubbing against things in their surroundings.

Tigers can also find other tigers in the area by smelling them. Based on a person’s unique smell, they can tell if they are part of the same social group or if they could be dangerous. This keeps them from getting into fights with other tigers and keeps their territory lines clear.

Pheromones are another way that animals talk to each other through smell. Pheromones are chemicals that an animal’s body gives off, which can change how other animals of the same species act. Tigers use pheromones to tell other tigers about their social standing, whether or not they are ready to have cubs and other important things.

Research has shown that tigers have an incredibly sensitive sense of smell, which allows them to detect scents from long distances. This ability is especially important for finding prey, as tigers rely heavily on their sense of smell to locate potential targets.

Body Language: Visual Communication in Tigers

Bengal tigers, like many other animals, use body language as a form of visual communication. Through their posture, movements, and facial expressions, they are able to convey a range of messages to other tigers, including aggression, submission, and dominance.

The standard “tiger pose” is one of the most well-known ways tigers communicate with their bodies. With their ears perked up, eyes fixed, and bodies lowered to the ground, they are ready to pounce on prey or defend their territory. This is a clear sign that the animal is ready and can be used to warn other animals nearby that something is dangerous.

Face movements are another important part of tiger body language. Tigers can tell other tigers how they feel and what they want to do by the way they move their faces. For example, a tiger may bare its teeth and growl to show aggressiveness when it feels threatened. If it feels weak, it might shrink and lower its head to avoid a fight.

In addition to posture and facial expressions, tigers also use tail and ear movements to communicate. A twitching tail can indicate restlessness or agitation, while a relaxed tail is a sign of calm. Similarly, when tigers flick their ears back and forth, it can be a sign of alertness and readiness.

The Language of Touch: Tactile Communication Among Tigers

Tigers need to be able to communicate with each other through touch to build relationships and set up social orders. Tigers show authority through touch. They do things like rub their heads and nuzzle to show where they are in order. This can be seen in the way mothers talk to their cubs and in the way, adult tigers talk to each other.

Tigers also use touch to show love and form bonds with each other. They clean and rub each other’s fur with their teeth and claws. This is called mutual brushing. This behavior helps people get along better with each other and calms down the group.

Tigers also use touch to communicate with each other when they play. Cubs play rough-and-tumble games with each other, like biting, pawing, and fighting. By playing like this, kids learn important social skills and the physical balance they’ll need to hunt and stay alive in the wild.

Communication in Hunting: How Tigers Coordinate Their Attacks

Bengal tigers are known for their remarkable hunting abilities, and one key factor in their success is their ability to communicate effectively during a hunt. Tigers mostly hunt alone, but they may also work together as a family to take down larger prey.

When hunting in a group, tigers use various forms of communication to coordinate their attacks. One common strategy is for one tiger to chase prey towards another tiger waiting in ambush. The waiting tiger may use visual cues, such as body language or tail movements, to signal to the chasing tiger where to drive the prey.

Tigers may also use vocalizations to communicate during a hunt. Studies have shown that tigers have a range of vocalizations that they use in different contexts, such as for territorial displays or to communicate with cubs.

Tigers Fight

  • by Sharad Vats

Nature Safari India - Curious tiger

Not many have seen the Tigers fight in a Jungle. At times one feels that he is lucky to see one, at times you feel that you should not have seen one. Two beautiful powerful creatures fighting to capture a territory or a Tigress is not a pleasant sight. After-effects are consequential, painful and death for the fighters, and distressful for the viewer.

You must be wondering why this note on a travel site? The reason is simple, this site or this company came into being because of love for Tigers. So anything going on with Tigers is a matter of concern and I wish to share it here. Another point you must be wondering is about my fascination with Kanha Tigers..well let me clarify here, Mukki to be in particular. Yes, I am enamoured by these Mukki males, the reason is they are monstrous, mesmerizing, and majestic.

I write this note while the battle between two heavyweight Tigers is on in Mukki zone of Kanha. Coincidentally both are sons of the legendary Munna (who has CAT spelt as a marking on his forehead). One is Umarpani male who has ruled Mukki for the last 4 plus years. He has been used to being the dominant male in Mukki zone. But over last three years, it was noticed that three more males (Bheema, Kingfisher (KF), Link7) came into the zone and kind of charted out a small pie out of Mukki. Umarpani allowed that to happen for reasons best known to him. The second male is Chotta Munna aka Link7 and lately even Linku. Called Chotta Munna as he is the son of Munna.

Umarpani and Kingfisher (KF) Tigers fight

But as they came, as they went, like the FIFO rule (First In, First Out). KF got the first dose of Umarpani’s fury as he was the eldest of the lot. KF was born late 2010 and went in Oct 2016. He often intruded territory of Umarpani male for a good close to two years. Like a seasoned warrior or a smart street fighter, Umarpani male did not do anything initially. He waited for himself to get into his prime. He studied KF completely, which included a fight in Jan 2015 with him. Seemed as if he did a SWOT (strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threat) analysis of KF. Assessed his amplitude, then like a fugitive knocked him out fast, furious and forever. It seemed like a very clever fight by Umarpani male, without injuries to himself he was able to bring down the mighty KF.

tiger safari fight

Umarpani and Bheema Tigers fight

Now it was the turn of Bheema, in November 2016 they had a fight, and Bheema was discovered afflicted with agonizing injuries. He was moaning when found by Mahouts. He had not eaten for a few days, had maggots all over him, basically, an irreversible condition. Forest department tried their best to revive him but failed. Who could have done this to a Tiger? Another Tiger of course, but which one? Umarpani obviously.

When it seemed that the Tigers fight in late 2016 had settled the territorial and Tigress sharing arrangement perhaps people had underestimated the Tigers of Kanha. The Tigers fight in Kanha for Territories, Tigresses, and Tyranny. They wash their fight with blood. No half measures.

Advantages to Umarpani male in a Tigers fight

This guy has advantages going his way right from his genes. Son of Munna, and Umarpani female both of whom were big sized. If one studies the lineage of Munna you know that his father was another big-time guy who ruled for a long time in Kanha. Same goes for Umarpani female, very strong lineage, her mother being a sister of the Legendary Laxmi.

Not only has Umapani male got the gene advantage of brawn but his brain is sharp too. Like in the previous two fights he displayed amazing intelligence. While he knew that to fight for long with KF was not advisable so surprise him and knock him out.

tiger safari fight

The Climax has begun; Umarpani male and Link 7 (Chotta Munna) Tigers fight

They have had a couple of minor skirmishes in the past. But the one-two days back was no small one. The fight was seen by some tourists. They came out of a bush, exchanged some blows right behind the safari vehicle, and moved into the bush again. During the approach, Umarpani male was seen bleeding in his eye and his left forepaw. But not to be subdued he was after the Link7 after the blows were exchanged. This means that Link7 was wanting to leave the territory and Umarpani was walking behind him to ensure that. The cut below the eye of Umarpani male at first gave a sign that he has lost his eye, but no, he escaped marginally being blinded by one eye.

After this fight, a reticent calm in the forest. They both disappeared into the forest. None knew what happened. Who was hit how badly? Was the fight over? Will they survive? If yes, then who will and who will not? All Kanha lovers on the edge, sleepless nights. Both the Tigers were heart-throbs of many. Link7 had shown his boldness in his very early days, he would model for the tourists, run after the adult Tigers while he was a sub-adult. Basically a very favourite Tiger of the tourists.

On the other hand, Umarpani has been the shy one, never wants publicity. Hardly gave sightings till the time all the 4 males were in the zone. But after eliminating the two males he started to show up. Though not so consistently as Link7 or other Tigers hence there is a raging debate on him about his size and stealth.

Will Umarpani survive this Tigers fight?

Now, this is a million-dollar question. But odds are in his favour. He has a deep cut below his left eye, will that heal? It is noticed that Tigers usually lick themselves and get fit. But his tongue will not reach the area of the cut, does that mean the wound can be severe? He is a smart Tiger, and he knows what to do in such conditions. Tigers need no training in self-defence and recovery. They learn the first aid course from their mother’s womb. I have heard of Tigers applying saliva on their paws and then rubbing the paw in the area where the tongue cannot reach. I can confidently say this as I have also seen my German Shepherd do this when he got cut below his eye. He did exactly what I had heard. Apply saliva on his paw and rub on his eye.

This is the treatment that Umarpani male will give himself and be out for the final round of the fight which in my opinion will be sooner than expected. Whose favour the fight will go only the time will tell, but it is advantage Umarpani for now.

Best Wishes to the Tigers of Kanha, may the best of genes survive, after-all it is the “Survival of the Fittest”

– Sharad Vats

P.S. I am adding this note three days after the fight of the two big males. Happy to report that both the males are moving, so no injury critical. Umarpani male has been tracked by the Mahouts of the forest department. They clicked his image and observed a cut just above his eye which is drying up, and should be healed soon. Chotta Muna (Link7) was seen by the tourists yesterday morning. He was limping a bit, and dragging his leg as well. No bleeding as such, so he should also be back to normal soon.

These are true Tigers, they fight like one, they heal like one. In fact, Umarpani male was seen by the Mahouts bringing down an Indian Gaur. Now, this speaks volumes of the mental state of this Tiger. After a fight with a big Tiger in which he came out bleeding he has gone ahead and killed a Gaur, the largest prey animal in Kanha this is amazing, and this is what makes Umarpani male a very special Tiger for me. He seems to be proving right a blog post written by me on him last year, titled, “The Biggest Tiger of Central India”.

Criminal exploits of Scattered Spider earn respect of Russian ransomware hackers

By Bill Whitaker , Aliza Chasan , Graham Messick, Jack Weingart

April 14, 2024 / 7:32 PM EDT / CBS News

In the shadowy corners of the dark web, young hackers from the U.S., U.K., and Canada met and teamed up with Russian ransomware hackers, becoming powerful partners in crime.

In the last year, ransomware hackers have targeted hospitals, pharmaceuticals, tech companies, and even Las Vegas' biggest hotels and casinos. Bryan Vorndran, the FBI's top cyber official, called ransomware an "enormous problem," and says no sector, company, or type of organization is off limits to hackers. There are estimates that global losses from ransom payments exceed $1 billion a year.

"Any way you look at the numbers, it's a problem for the global economy, and for the U.S. economy, and for the security of the United States," Vorndran said.

Scattered Spider hackers

A loose-knit group of predominantly native-English speaking hackers, called Scattered Spider by the FBI, are behind some of the recent ransomware attacks, Vorndran said. The group is also known as Star Fraud, UNC3944, and Octo Tempest. Scattered Spider hackers are considered experts in social engineering.

"Part of their success is because they are fluent in Western culture. They know how our society works," said Allison Nixon, chief research officer with the cybersecurity firm Unit 221B. "They know what to say to get someone to do something."

Allison Nixon

Scattered Spider is just one of many illicit hacking groups, all part of a sprawling collection of online criminals calling themselves "the Community," or "the Com" for short, Nixon said. She describes it as a new, but surprisingly disruptive online subculture. Members of the Com have hacked into companies like Microsoft, Nvidia and Electronic Arts, among others.

The number of people involved has exploded since 2018 from only a few hundred to thousands, Nixon said.

"They connect over the internet. Social spaces where people hang out. Gaming servers," Nixon said. "It's almost analogous to, like, maybe the back alley where the bad kids hang out but on the internet."

Those involved are largely males under the age of 25, though Nixon said teens as young as 13 have also been involved in pulling off major crimes.

Infiltrating ransomware gangs on the dark web

Members communicate on messaging apps like Telegram – their chatter a toxic stew of racism and sexism. They often boast about the money they've scammed and how menacing they are.

"There are these toxic online spaces where young people can socialize and mingle with criminals and gang members," Nixon said. "And the end result of all of this is this online subculture has formed that glorifies crime, that measures one's personal worth by how much harm they can cause the world."

Hackers team up

Scattered Spider is one of the most sophisticated offshoots of the Com. Their criminal exploits have caught the attention of cybersecurity companies and earned the respect of other criminal hackers, including one of the most notorious Russian ransomware gangs, BlackCat, also known as ALPHV, who saw the young, native-English-speaking Westerners as a potential "force multiplier" for their ransomware attacks.

"Historically speaking, Russian cyber criminals did not like working with Western cyber criminals," Nixon said. "There was not only a language barrier, but also they kinda looked down on them and viewed them as unprofessional."

Scattered Spider uses its English and social engineering skills to break into companies and other entities. BlackCat provides its experience, platform and its malware, which has been used in some of the most consequential ransomware attacks in recent history.

Cybersecurity researchers believe that BlackCat is made up of former members of the Russian cybercriminal hacking group DarkSide/BlackMatter, which was responsible for the 2021 attack on Colonial Pipeline that caused gas shortages up and down the East Coast. And according to an FBI advisory, "Many of the developers and money launderers for BlackCat/ALPHV are linked to DarkSide/BlackMatter, indicating they have extensive networks and experience with ransomware operations."

Jon DiMaggio

"It's called rebranding," said Jon DiMaggio, who is chief security strategist for cybersecurity company Analyst1. DiMaggio investigates ransomware and the relationships between different cybercriminal groups.

"With the ransomware as a service model, you have that core gang that's the service provider that is providing all these resources and attack services to make their job easy. And then you have the hackers who are the contractors that work for them," said DiMaggio.

Long-established Russian gangs, like BlackCat, offer their services — including the latest malware and experience negotiating ransoms and laundering money — to affiliate hacking groups, like Scattered Spider. If a victim pays a ransom, the funds are split.

Ransomware attacks bring companies to knees

Scattered Spider and BlackCat both claimed credit for the September 2023 ransomware attack on MGM Resorts , which cost the hotel and casino giant more than $100 million. It disrupted operations at a dozen of the most renowned hotels and casinos on the Las Vegas Strip: including MGM Grand, Aria, Mandalay Bay, New York-New York and the Bellagio.

Anthony Curtis, who publishes the "Las Vegas Advisor," was in an MGM property during the ransomware attack. He says people were left dumbfounded as thousands of slot machines suddenly stopped functioning properly.

"So all of a sudden now people are going 'How do I get my money? What's wrong?' And the people were sitting there waiting and couldn't get paid," Curtis said.

As a result of the cyberattack, elevators were malfunctioning, parking gates froze, and digital door keys wouldn't work. As computers went down, reservations locked up and lines backed up at the front desks.

"Anything that required technology was not working," Curtis said.

MGM Resorts declined a request for an interview, but at a conference a month after the hack, CEO and President Bill Hornbuckle admitted the disruptions were devastating.

"For the next four or five days with 36,000 hotel rooms and some regional properties, we were completely in the dark," Hornbuckle said at the conference.

The hackers demanded $30 million to unlock MGM's data. The company refused, but they still paid a price – an estimated $100 million in lost revenue, plus millions more to rebuild their servers.

Hackers got inside MGM's network using social engineering. They zeroed in on an employee, gathering information from the dark web and open sources, like LinkedIn. Next, a smooth-talking hacker impersonated the employee and called the MGM tech help desk. The hacker convinced tech support to reset his password. With that, the hacker was inside MGM's computers and unleashed destructive malware.

Curtis said it was the cyber criminals' version of an "Ocean's Eleven" heist.

"These hackers were able to turn the tables," Curtis said. "The casinos have their systems. They have their protections. They have their experts. They have their security. These guys are better."

Anthony Curtis

Later, MGM's biggest competitor, Caesars , admitted it also suffered a social engineering attack around the same time. It's suspected it was by the same group. Caesars reportedly paid a $15 million ransom and did not suffer any disruptions.

"From an FBI perspective, our position is we recommend a ransom not be paid," Vorndran said. "But we understand it's a business decision during a time of crisis."

He declined to say if any arrests had been made in the Las Vegas cases.

Worries for future

Ransomware hacks have been growing more costly and disruptive every year and cyber security researchers fear it's going to get worse.

The Russian government provides a safe haven for Russian ransomware gangs, said DiMaggio. He added that as long as the hackers don't target organizations in Russia, they don't get prosecuted.

"It's crazy, right? That's how it works though," DiMaggio said.

The most successful Russian gangs are run like legitimate companies with easy-to-navigate online platforms. The leadership are people in their 30s and 40s, DiMaggio said. They often have a financial background.

"There are people that specialize in developing malware and ransomware, and they're in very high demand," DiMaggio said.

Russian ransomware has become such a threat that the elite cyber warriors at the National Security Agency have joined the fight. Rob Joyce, who was the NSA's director of cybersecurity before retiring last month, said the Colonial Pipeline attack was a wakeup call.

"It caused us to step back and decide that we had to put more resources into this foreign threat," Joyce said. "That's the value NSA can bring is, we can identify people, specific people involved in some of these activities."

The NSA helped identify the Russian hacker responsible for the Colonial Pipeline attack. And in January 2022, after months of negotiations, Russia arrested him and other accomplices. But it all came undone five weeks later.

Rob Joyce

"Following the Ukraine invasion, those people were let out of jail," Joyce said.

And now, Russian hackers have teamed up with the young native-English speaking hackers of Scattered Spider. The FBI's Vorndran calls it an evolution of cybercrime.

"I think that it's important to know that we are against a very capable set of adversaries, they're very good at their work," he said. "We're also very good at our work."

In January, the FBI arrested a 19-year-old from Florida named Noah Urban on charges of stealing $800,000 in cryptocurrency. Urban has pleaded not guilty. Cyber investigators have tied him to Scattered Spider, but so far not to the casino heist. The Scattered Spider hackers who did pull off the attack on MGM are still online – hiding in plain sight – in unholy alliance with Russian hackers. Nixon calls what happened in Las Vegas a harbinger.

"The level of cybercrime has risen to the point where it feels overwhelming," she said. "And every year it gets worse. And it feels like as defenders, it's almost like we're winning every battle and losing the war."
