Tom Cruise wearing Persol shades in the 1988 classic Cocktail.

On the list of overused fashion terms, “updated classic” ranks pretty high. But in the case of the latest product from the Italian eyewear masters at Persol , it feels like a pretty apt descriptor.

This week, the brand released a few new takes on its PO3225S model—more commonly known as the shades Tom Cruise’s character Brian Flanagan wore in the 1988 classic Cocktail . In the film, Flanagan attempts to raise money for business school by working as a shaker-slinging bartender and eventually moves to Jamaica to serve his high-flying cocktails on the beach. The shades are prominently featured during a scene in which Flanagan is being berated by a customer at an all-inclusive resort for a free cocktail. His love interest, Jordan Mooney (played by Elizabeth Shue) runs up to the bar and asks him to help a friend who’s passed out on the beach, and Flanagan and his shades spring into action.

The sunglasses offer a heft and stance that are about as bold as any other memorable pair from that decade: They feature a boxy shape with a straight top bar, while preserving a handful of Persol’s signifiers. The keyhole bridge, taken straight from the 649 sunglasses Steve McQueen helped make famous, is still there, as is the distinctive sword-shaped metal accent that connects the frames to the temple.

From a design perspective, they don’t differ all that much from the ’80s originals. But what this new batch of sunglasses offers instead is the choice of six shades of the brand’s well-known, durable acetate. Right now, you can pre-order polarized versions in black or brown tortoise for $360, or you can choose from black and three other tortoise frames for $310.

Any of these configurations offer classic shape that’ll look sharp for years to come. And while they probably won’t make you a better bartender, they will serve as a wearable conversation piece—whether you’re at the bar, the beach, or anywhere in between. Visit Persol.com to see all six shades .

Italian Eyewear Brand Persol Celebrates the Old with the New

Persol’s latest collection is a timeless extension of the Italian eyewear brand’s reputation for high quality, stylish design. Take a look.

  • Author: Teddy Willson

Luxury eyewear brand Persol lives up its namesake in its latest collection and campaign, “For The Sun. Not Only.” The Italian company’s name is a literal translation of the very function of its product—for the sun.

Not only does the new collection celebrate the brand’s trademark, but also its history. Reissued eyewear styles made their way out of the archives and back onto shelves, alongside brand-new summer releases.

Among the reimagined frames is the PO3225S style, which features a boxy design and key bridge inspired one of Persol’s most popular glasses. The style looks like it could have been pulled straight off the set of an ’80s movie, and it basically was. Tom Cruise wore Persol’s PO3225S sunglasses in his 1988 film, “Cocktail.”

Persol’s 649 model , the aforementioned best-seller, got a fresh update with double-layer acetate combined with polar lenses in a variety of colors. Subtle patterns grace the front frame, accentuating the brand’s iconic arrow.

The PO3219V design was introduced to the line, providing another option for those looking for sleek, durable and stylish optical eyewear. The acetate oval glasses are a nod to the ’30s, a decade that saw an increase in the popularity of eyewear simply for the sake of style.

Actors, musicians, models and artists—including Gabriel Kane Day-Lewis, Leyna Bloom, Jeremy McClain , and Sean O’Pry—gathered yesterday for an intimate dinner at the Gramercy Park Hotel in New York to celebrate the new Persol launch.

Risky Business sunglasses

Tom Cruise and Ray Ban Wayfarer Sunglasses Risky Business

In the 1983 classic film Risky Business, Tom Cruise plays a high school student who starts a prostitution business to pay for his college tuition. And while his character isn't exactly a role model, there's no denying that he had some great style. One of the most iconic looks from the movie is when Cruise is seen wearing a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers. There are many iterations of the Wayfarer but the one sported by Cruise is the true O.G. Featuring the classic disjointed wing juncture and the extreme pantoscopic tilt are the hallmarks of an original wayfarer.

Classic Rayban Wayfarer in Black

The original Wayfarers used to be produced with real glass lenses and even used to be manufactured in America. But since the Luxottica takeover in 1999 they have been made in the east to a much debated lower quality... But if you're not too bothered about the provenance of your frames and want to channel your inner Tom Cruise, be sure to check out Ray-Ban's sunglasses collection. Most recently the Wayfarer appears in the Netflix Smash Hit nostaglic series Stranger Things , if you're in the mood to reminisce check out the article.

The Rayban Clubmaster is available in a variety of different colours, so you can find the perfect pair to match your personality. Whether you want a classic black or brown pair, or something more colourful.

The Clubmaster style of frame is also known as a "Browline" and draws attention to the wearer’s browline by using a dark or contrasting material only along the top portion of the frame and temples.

The lenses are typically held in place by a thin metal frame or what is known as a "supra". Instead of metal holding the base of the lens in place, it's a thin nylon cord which is virtually invisible. Giving the frame the look of the lenses almost defying gravity.

Mission impossible 2 oakley sunglasses

Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible Wearing Oakley Romeo

In Mission Impossible II, Tom Cruise's character Ethan Hunt can be seen wearing a pair of Oakley Romeo sunglasses. These stylish shades help to protect his eyes from the bright sun while he is out on missions. Originally called the "Oscar" it was the world's first 3d sculpted full metal sunglasses frame. It's unique style and shape offered a glimpse into a futuristic-inspired era of eyewear prevalent in fashion as a whole during the turn of the Millenium.

Oakley Romeo sunglasses frame

However, styling aside the frame being made from metal created stress points on the lenses, causing them to fracture and splinter. The frame was also criticised for being too large for the average head and too heavy for prolonged wear.

It was discontinued in 2004 and replaced with the Romeo 2 and now launched their Muzm Series Romeo in 2021 which is the 3d printed version of the iconic design.

Mission Impossible ghost protocol sunglasses

What many people don't know is that the glasses worn by Tom Cruise in the movie are actually a custom-made version of the Oakley Windjacket glasses frame.

Oakley Wind Jacket Glasses worn by Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol

The original Oakley Wind Jacket sunglasses are designed to be lightweight and comfortable, with a sleek style that is perfect for athletes or anyone who wants to look good while being active. But what makes the Tom Cruise version so special is that it is completely transparent. That's right, those Mission Impossible ghost protocol sunglasses are see-through!

Oakley Wind Jacket Ducati

The Wind Jacket™ is a special rendition of the renowned Split Jacket™ sunglasses. A removable strap and snap-in gaskets were added to the Wind Jacket, which was created with motorcycle riders in mind and includes a detachable seal for sealing airflow across your eyes at high speeds. This interchangeable lens design, which comes with SwitchlockTM Technology for fast and easy lens replacement, is must-have equipment for any lifestyle that travels quickly.

This style is no longer in production however there are a few Ducati editions of the Wind Jacket still available. Which is a dark grey version of the transparent frame Cruise wears in MI.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol also sees Tom Cruise sporting an old favourite Persol once again. In the classic Havana colourway, it’s a more rectangular shape compared with the normal aviator style we're used to seeing Cruise wear. This shape seems to suit him better and with the addition of the tortoise print, it's a more sophisticated look for the action star.

Persol PO2978S sunglasses as seen on Tom Cruise

Although this isn't the first time we've seen Tom Cruise in Persol sunglasses , it is the first time that we've seen him wearing this particular style and colourway. We hope that this trend continues as we think it suits him.

The 2017 film see Cruise play Barry Seal in "American Made" a former TWA pilot who starts working for the CIA in the early 1980s. The film is based on true events and chronicles Seal's involvement in the Contras scandal.

Tom Cruise American Made sunglasses

Tom Cruise American Made wearing Randolph aviators

Playing yet another pilot requires yet another aviator for the lead sunglasses role. This time it's that of Randolph Engineering. A hot favourite from the likes of Johnny Depp who has been wearing them both on and off screen.

Randolph engineering sunglasses are some of the most popular on the US market. The company has been around for over 40 years and is known for their high-quality products. They offer a wide variety of styles and colours to choose from, so you can find the perfect pair to match your personal style. Whether you're looking for a classic aviator or a more modern style, Randolph has you covered.

Randolph Aviator Military Special Edition

A telltale sign of Randolph aviators over others is the signature straight temple arm. Without the usual temple drop; this allows for easy on-off whilst wearing a helmet. And with Randolph's affiliation with the US military, it's easy to see why that would be a requirement. These frames rely on a wraparound temple arm to help the frame grip onto the sides of your head to ensure they don't fall off.

The specific frame worn by Cruise in the film is the Aviator special military edition, with a starting price of $330 and a range of 3 different size to ensure optimal fit.

Mission Impossible 5 - Rogue Nation Tom Cruise Sunglasses

Tom Cruise Wearing LGR Tangeri sunglasses

MI 5 sees Ethan Hunt and his team return to take on a rogue group of terrorists called the Syndicate. If you're looking for a pair of sunglasses that will have you looking just as suave as Tom Cruise, then look no further than the L.G.R. luxury brand. These Italian-made beauties are the perfect addition to any outfit, whether you're dressing up or down. The aviator style is classic and timeless, and the black acetate frame is both sleek and sophisticated.

LGR Tangeri Sunglasses worn by Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible

L.G.R was founded in 1990 by two friends with a passion for eyewear and a shared dream of creating their own business. Today, the company is run by Creative Director Massimo Gamba, who oversees all aspects of design and production. Each pair of LGR sunglasses is handmade in Italy using only the finest materials.

L.G.R. feature twice in MI:5 the second time it's the turn of Comoros. This eyeglass frame is designed from sheet metal, making it very thin and lightweight. The dark grey rubber lens rim contrasts against the silver metal frame, giving it a futuristic appearance. Plus, they're fitted with premium Zeiss dark grey sun lenses that offer 100% UV protection. So if you're looking for a pair of sunglasses that can keep up with your active lifestyle (or just want to channel your inner Ethan Hunt) these could be for you.

Conclusion: The Tom Cruise Effect

It's no secret that Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood's most bankable stars. He has a long list of box office hits to his name and is known for his dedication to his craft. But he is almost as famous for his sunglasses habit.

That's right, over the course of his career, Tom Cruise has been spotted wearing a variety of different sunglasses on-screen and off. And it seems that his fans can't get enough of it. In fact, there's even been a phenomenon dubbed "The Tom Cruise Effect" which refers to the increase in sales of the sunglasses worn by the actor in films.

So if you're looking for your next pair of sunnies and trying to choose, Tom Cruise may just be the best person to ask. But of course, we can't all slide into Tom's DMs and ask... So hopefully this article has provided some insight into some of his favourite frames and which ones may be right for you.

After a long, protracted wait, Maverick: Top Gun is finally here. The sequel hits theaters this week amid a very weird time for movies. A slew of major blockbusters have all had their opening dates pushed due to COVID-19; a handful of recent theatrical releases, meanwhile, are getting fast-tracked to Video on Demand . But since the trailer dropped a whopping two years ago, Maverick has remained a shimmering ray of popcorn-chomping hope on the horizon, a high-octane, greased-up, beach-volleyball-playing, mach-two-with-your-hair-on-fire scorcher that promises a return to the heyday of the summer blockbuster .

But the much-anticipated Top Gun sequel stands apart for another reason entirely. Cinephiles love to bemoan the dearth of originality in modern blockbusters; the most successful pictures, they’ll groan at you, are almost always paint-by-numbers sequels or lazy remakes or loose adaptations of some obscure Happy Meal toy from 1992 designed to tickle your brain’s warm nostalgic pleasure centers. Judging by the reviews , though, Maverick appears to be a shot-for-shot recreation of the original Top Gun (albeit laced with way, way more vertigo-inducing, real-deal stunt work )—and yet people are still losing their goddamn minds over this movie. Tom Cruise does not lose. His ego just keeps writing checks that his body miraculously continues to cash .

Along with Cruise, his old teeth-chomping adversary Val Kilmer, and a sweaty undercurrent of latent homoeroticism, the sequel is bringing back another vital piece of the Top Gun puzzle: Maverick’s iconic Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses. In the seven months after the first film dropped in 1986, sales of aviators reportedly jumped 40%. It’s easy to see why: everybody, a slightly damp Tom Cruise especially included, looks great in a pair of aviators . The teardrop lenses flatter all face shapes, and the slender metal frames sync up perfectly with everything from a tight white tee and Levi’s to a heavily starched and pressed dress uniform . Like Cruise himself, they’re ageless and eternal.

And if the buzz is to be believed, you’re going to want to buy your pair pronto. Assuming the excitement around this flick continues to build apace, and history repeats itself, waiting to see it before copping the shades will likely mean missing out on them entirely. (And remember— there are no points for second place .) Safer to secure ‘em now, before everyone and their uncle gets the same idea. Trust us: they’re going to look cool as all hell on an 80-foot IMAX screen, and they’ll look equally as cool on you all summer. They’re the best of the best , and they’ll make you better.

The Many Shades of Tom Cruise: Sunnies Were Made For This Guy

  • Jun 13, 2012

I’m A Star, Baby

Glamorous Gucci’s, all black with large lenses and thick sides, just seem to scream “I’m a movie star!” You are, Tom, you are. These are fabulous for facing the paparazzi when getting in and out of matching black limos because they don’t show the angry eyes! Oh wait, that would be Sean Penn, not Tom Cruise.

It’s Something Persol

Hip To Be Square

Even in big, boxy, black shades, Cruise is still beautiful. Of course, these square sunnies aren’t just any glasses, but stylish Ray Ban’s with polarized lenses and a double metal crossbar accent. These are squares with flair to be sure!

What Goes Around

Never one to shy away from different shaped shades (a good thing when you have a face that can wear anything!), Cruise even wears rounder lenses on occasion. He’s been seen rockin’ some sweetly round-edged Persols. The black square style of classic summer eyewear really suits Tom Cruise. He goes for Gucci in the dark, iconic sunglasses shape popular with men and women. Tom looks sophisticated and sporty all at once in these shades. And as an interesting change from his typical black lenses and cool toned metals, Tom is striking in Ray Ban’s warm-toned version of aviators. The metal trim of these classics is all gold and the lenses are a greenish gray color. Hot!

Bare Essentials

In Mission Impossible, Cruise wore a few different, ultra-small, ultra-sporty Oakleys. Those black, tiny Oakley Eye Jacket sunglasses covered only Tom’s eyeballs, yet he looked fabulous. Once again, Tom Cruise helped fuel an summer eyewear craze. Guys were wearing these shades all over the place after the movie came out.

Living Large

Really proving that he can carry off any shape and size of sunnies, Cruise just rocks the goggle-like, Dior 0087/5 shades. These huge, rimless sunglasses are all fashionably black with a thick metal top crossbar for glamor. He looked so incredibly amazing that he probably got anything he wanted when he wore these babies!

Justin Case

Just in case his eyewear seems to be even remotely predictable, Tom seems to really switch things up every once in a while. A case in point is the Justin designer shades that Tom’s been seen wearing. These are gold-toned, metal trimmed lenses of a unique kind of tilted rectangular shape by designer Loree Rodkin. They’re inspired by aviators, yet don’t have the low-dipping lenses. As usual, Tom Cruise can carry these more unusual shades off, no problem. We wonder what kind of sunglasses style he’ll choose for fun next. Bring it on, Tom!

How to Dress Like Tom Cruise in ‘Mission Impossible’

IMF agent Ethan Hunt may play it fast and loose on missions, but his clothing is always on point.

tom cruise persol sunglasses cocktail

The key to being a good movie spy is fitting in no matter the surroundings, so it makes sense that the key to good movie spy style is looking good no matter the sartorial situation. The ability to look good in a variety of outfits is a big part of what makes movie spies like Ethan Hunt, Tom Cruise ‘s character in the Mission Impossible films, fashion icons.

Over 22 years and six films, including the soon-to-be-released Mission Impossible: Fallout , Cruise has rocked suits, tactical gear, tuxedos, and plenty of leather jackets while playing Hunt. As one of the best-dressed characters in one of the most successful franchises in movie history, Hunt’s style should inspire all guys who want to look their best. The fact that Cruise is 56 with three kids means that dads in particular should take notice.

Here are some of our favorite pieces from the recent Mission Impossible films that can up any dad’s style game.

The Hooded Leather Jacket from Ghost Protocol

tom cruise persol sunglasses cocktail

Hunt’s hooded silhouette has become a recurring image over the past few Mission Impossible films, and this jacket is a sterling example. The hood, which helped keep the Impossible Mission Force’s leader incognito as he slipped in and out of dangerous situations, will also help keep you warm and dry on late night diaper runs.

The Persol Sunglasses from Ghost Protocol

These classic Persol shades worn by Tom Cruise in Ghost Protocol kept the sun (and sand) out of his eyes when he was sprinting around Dubai. But their classic silhouette works well during any moment. These, after all, come from the brand who gave Steve McQueen his effortless cool.

The Tudor Heritage Chrono Watch from Ghost Protocol

tom cruise persol sunglasses cocktail

A great watch is one of the most versatile pieces you can own. Cruise rocks this one with white pants and a dark button down, but it would look just as great with a suit or tuxedo. At nearly five grand, it’s definitely an investment, but if you’re in the market for a quality timepiece you could do a lot worse for a lot more money.

The Tacky Shirt from Rogue Nation

tom cruise persol sunglasses cocktail

The costume designer made this shirt Cruise wears from fabric she found in east London, so unfortunately you won’t be able to wear the exact shirt. Nevertheless, the lesson is clear: if worn with confidence (and a great pair of dark pants), nicely patterned floral shirt can do wonders. We dig this one from H&M.

The Grey Suit from Rogue Nation

The suit, worn by Cruise as he clings to that airplane in the beginning of Rogue One, was custom-made with reinforced seams that could withstand such intense wind. This Armani suit is a close copy. Just know that it will likely rip if you spend time hanging from a fuselage.

The Leather Jacket from Rogue Nation

tom cruise persol sunglasses cocktail

This jacket, which Cruise wears for the majority of Rogue Nation , is all about the texture. Purposely textured to appear as though it has wrinkles, the jacket, made by Barney’s has a well-worn, timeless feel.

These sunnies rep a lot of what military pilots have worn for decades. Yes, they're timelessly stylish, and Ray-Ban's model comes in a couple of different sizes to flatter most face shapes. If you have an average face width then you'll be good to get the 55 mm size but if you think you'll need to size up go with the 58 mm. The difference in sizing hardly effects the weight, so whichever you go with you'll still have a pair of metal frames that are light as a feather (about 1.1 oz).

And if you're looking to upgrade your Tom-approved Ray-Bans, you can get the 3025 in a polarized version . The cost is about $50 more but if you anticipate throwing these into your daily style rotation—which is a legitimate power move—then the price bump is worth the investment.

Sometimes the best style upgrades can be found by looking at what's always worked. Grab a pair of these bad boys and officially enter your "summer cool guy" status.
