On the elegant and prestigious main floor, the vast greenery of the 10,000 tsubo garden that can be seen from the windows looks like a forest, giving you the illusion that you are inside the mansion of a French aristocrat. The beautiful furniture imported from France when it first opened still shines today.

Tour d'Argent Tokyo

Ratings and reviews, location and contact, michelin guide's point of view.

We had a great dinner at Tour d'Argent!! The service and food was excellent, the ambiance was good as well. Never had this experience before and hope to visit again. I really recommend this place to everyone! Remember, ask for the sommelier recommendation!!

The expense report says it was an expensive meal but everything tastes good with butter does it not. And the pre-fixe menu was excellent. And we did the wine pairing $$$ and the fois gras and the beef and the duck . Tres Bien. Merci... Beaucoup. Oh one does need to dress up. More

Combine French elegance and impeccable Japanese F&B service, and one gets La Tour d'Argent Tokyo. Dining here is definitely quite an experience. The decor is decidedly period French, a bit OTT, heavy with courtly awe, chandeliers, ceiling mirrors, drapes, a sense of reverence. One almost... felt the necessity to whisper rather than talk loudly in case one disturbed the next table. However, being a Tuesday evening, we saw only three other covers, unless there were earlier diners because we had a late dinner. We were informed that the restaurant is rather popular during special public holidays and holiday seasons. The waiters are in coattails. A dress code for diners is mandatory - gentlemen in jackets and ladies in smart chic. All credit and praise to Maitre d'Hotel Kouichiro Harashima and his special team. The staff all stood at attention facing the diners; any slight nod or wave will bring a staff quickly but quietly to your side. And often anticipating your needs. Their service was faultless. My partner and I made a reservation at this restaurant just for one item on its dinner menu. And that is Duckling Frederic Delair. The dining experience was quite, quite superlative. We elected to have the entire duckling , which would mean breast meat as a first main and then drumstick as a second main. Before the dinner, we had met with the maitre d to inform him of my dietary restrictions. And he was very flexible. The meal started with an amuse bouche. As an appetizer, my partner opted for the duckling consomme, while the maitre d recommended for me just two spears of steamed white asparagus which was in season. The breast meat course was excellent. The dish was brought to the table and presented with a flourish 'voila'. The accompanying sauce, made from pressing the bones and extracting the marrow juices, then slow cooking it in the restaurant's own recipe, in the dining room in front of the diners, was simply divine. It was not heavy, just light enough, and tasted slightly peppery, to enhance the flavor of the breast meat which was still a bit red and juicy. The second main was a drumstick each. A finger bowl for each of us was brought to the table, because we opted to use our fingers. Such was the superb and attentive service. A sommelier was on hand to help us select a bottle of wine from a very thick and heavy list, a list we felt was on the high side, price wise. Nevertheless, the red wine went beautifully with the duck. Just as the main course ended, Harashima-san presented us a memento postcard - an authentic duckling number certificate, a tradition started in 1890 in Tour d'Argent Paris, and in 1984 in Tour d'Argent Tokyo. Our certificate says " Votre Caneton No: 260441" (Your Duckling no: 260441). The maitre d said that the certificate confirms that the duckling came from France. Then the maitre d suggested we move to an adjoining room for dessert and petit fours to enjoy a view of the garden which The Hotel New Otani is famous for. Definitely worth coming again, if only to experience, again, the impeccable service. Reservations recommended. Closed on Monday. More

Over the years, I have been to Tour d'Argent 5 times before, and each time, I really enjoyed it. The service was impeccable and the food excellent. In fact, I have been praising it to my friends in Tokyo. On Sunday 11 August, I was... back in Tokyo and was looking forward to going back to Tour d'Argent with a French friend of mine together with his Japanese wife. Because I have been praising the restaurant so much, they were looking forward to it as well. What a disappointment. We ordered the famed "Press Duck". It was Ok, The second dish, as part of that order, used to be a simple roasted leg of the duck. This time, there were fanciful stuff with it and detracted from the purity of the roast leg. Another disappointment. Finally, we were given a "certificate". Previous certificates, of which I have five of them, were classy with a picture of a chef preparing the duck on the front, and on the inside page, some history regarding the duck. This time, it was a postcard with a cartoon duck hugging a tower. It cheapens the whole experience. in my previous 5 trips, the restaurant was full. This time, only a few tables of patron. That tells all. I recognise some other staff. Their service was excellent. That's the only thing that reminds me of the previous experience, The staff was really excellent. When I expressed my disappointment regarding the "certificate", I could sense the staff was disapproving of the new certificate. If Tour d'Argent doesn't go back to its old tradition, I am afraid it will no longer be the place of which i have so much fond memory. More

I start by saying that the decor is sumptuous - read OTT - and the staff are wonderfully attentive. I took the special menu for hotel guests - 5 courses plus "petites douceurs", with cheeses available at an extra price. The 1st course - moules... - was unsatisfying. The mussels themselves were tiny and flavourless, and the accompaniments lacked definition in both flavour and texture. The taste of the listed ingredients was simply not there, apart from a gentle curry effect. The 2nd course - brochet en savarin - was better, but the accompanying "jus de ratatouille" and "sauce citron confit" were over-salty for my taste. The 3rd course - duck soup - was also very flavoursome, but again over-salted to my taste, and the promised "petits legumes" a little hard to find. For the 4th course, there was a choice between fish and duckling. I chose the former, rouget. It was overcooked and dry. The accompanying turnip in brioche managed to lack both flavour and texture, and did nothing to save the dish from mediocrity. The cheese selection was superb, and the cheeses that I chose were in perfect condition. The dessert was excellent - a rich fig paste ("jam" or "confit" might be better descriptors) en route, and a delicious berry sorbet. Likewise, the douceurs. The wine list is amazing (and expensive). I feel the magic of the mother ship in Paris hasn't translated to Tokyo. It's a pity, because the cost is not inconsiderable - 15,000 yen pp ++, together with wine, cheese and mineral water (annoyingly, good old tap water isn't available). In my experience, you can eat much better for much less in Tokyo. More

For great french food don't spend your money here. There are fabulous french restaurants in Tokyo. La Tour D'Argent doesn't qualify.

Our third visit here was a huge disappointment. The quality of the food was definitely not what it used to be, and hundred-dollar bottles of wine were disastrous. The evening before our meal we wanted to calmly inspect the wine menu and were shooed away... after 10 minutes in the lounge by an arrogant maitre d'. Farewell to another of life's pleasures. More

I've dined at numerous 3 Star Michelin Restaurants (Eleven Madison Park, Le Bernardin, Jean George) but I was intrigued by the history of La Tour D'Argent. While all of the other places prided themselves on being inventive, LTDA seemed to pride itself on perfecting the... same dishes over hundreds of years. They've done an excellent job. The food was impeccable and perfectly executed. No flaws with any dish. Just like the room we sat in, each dish carried a strong sense of history and refinement. It was exciting to know that I was eating the same meticulously prepared duck and quenelle as Otto Von Bismarck. The wine list is intimidating and a bit too pricey for my liking. But, I'm sure there are some smart plays to make with it. Definitely ask to take a tour of the restaurant after your meal. The place is filled with art and museum pieces. I was a fan of the marble table that was carved to look like a tablecloth-- a true masterpiece. Yes it's pricey (around 300 USD per person depending on the conversion rate) but of the Michelin 3 stars I have dined at, I think this is the one I will repeat again. More

you can never go wrong with Michelin starred restaurant:) the Chef's menu was an absolute treat! probably the most delicious foie gras and duck confit I ever had! Beatiful presentation of each dish and Huge selection of wines! More

Dear Tour D’Argent Tokyo Team, On September 8th 2018, I chose to celebrate at your restaurant my wedding anniversary. From the moment we arrived until the end of our dinner, I had the most extraordinary experience. While dining, I was explaining to my spouse that... all employees were like in a ballet choreography, serving, guiding, and recommending their guests with an incredible proximity, a comfortable presence, a perfect timing, combined with discretion and a high level of service. Staffs were dancing around us. The spectacle was beautiful and the choreography perfect. I will remember this dinner for its impeccable quality of service. Besides, we did also enjoy the dinner and the Sommelier recommendations. Each meal we selected was a delicious surprise and we enjoyed every bite of it. The wine selection by the glass was an exquisite experience and the Sommelier was very attentive and inspiring. We did also enjoy the atmosphere and heritage of this restaurant. Everything was so comfortable that it felt we were at home. The restaurant is really beautiful and well decorated with many heritage pieces from France. Last but not least, we were guided by Mister Bollard, restaurant Managing Director, who took the time to explain to us France’s history and Tour D’Argent’s history, making us travelling through time. My wife and me will keep this dinner in our memory for ever. Thank you to the team of Tour d’Argent for this unique experience. Congratulations to all of you for the hard work you put in the excellence of your art and for pleasing your guests. More

Very authentic, nice outdoor cafe for people watching. The steak frites is a nice break from Japanese food.

I like the New Otani complex but I am aware you need to be able not to ask if is really worth every cent you are spending , specially at the Tour D' Argent in Tokyo. We were there twice in the last 4 years... and there is a melancholic magic in this place like in only very few others I have been in the last 30 years : maybe the "Horcher"(with its 1943 menu) in Madrid, "Rejans" in Istanbul (Atatürk's preferred place in the 30s), "Normandie" in Bangkok, "Apicus" in Tokio , and the restaurant under the former Hotel Marriott in Buenos Aires (with the original dishes of its opening 1903 but forgot the name of the restaurant). Upscale locations where not only the interior or the menu but simply everything seems to have been "timecapsuled": the menu, the style of preparations, the mise-en-place, the interior, the -opultent - furniture, the china, the dressing and behavior of the service team... and maybe the guests. From a gastronomic point of view it is for me a fantastic experience not to have a "retro" but a really authentic preserved style. This may frustrate someone easily as this can quickly be sensed as overpriced for a quality that has often in such "cocooned" place its limits compared to todays similar priced modernized upscale gastronomic offerings. But any modernization would be a huge loss, to the contrary I personally would hope that the Tour D'Argent in Tokyo will not continue with those "careful" modernization of the menu that I have - maybe wrongly - sensed. It is a hyper-elegant place and in order to feel well you cannot dress upscale enough. There is a very elegant 70s style salon for the "digestif" and a wonderful neoclassic large and bright dining room with a spectacular view on the Otani garden. Service comes with all the "gravitas" of traditional French gastronomy combined with this unique sense of elegant, distant, courtesy you can only experience Japan. Having said this the two evenings were worth the experience . On the first we had the "Foie Gras trois Empereur", "Canneton Marco Polo" and the Crepes with grapefruit. On the second pan fried foie gras, the famous Canneton Tour D'Argent and a sweet souffle. Was it the best dinner in my life - no, was it one of our most magic dinners - yes ! The concepts of the dishes are from another time (70s I guess) and neither the crepe or the Canard Marco Polo could be justified today for what they are , specially at this price . I could start reflecting about the acidity of the grapefruits, the temperature of the gelee on the Foie Gras, the harmony of the various pepper corn flavors of the "Marco Polo" duck- I will not . I am sure the plates come today exactly if not in a better preparation than those dishes came when they were the first time served in the 60s or 70s or maybe before. For me to be exposed to such - still delicate - dishes gives you a sense on where the culinary and overall gastronomic traditions comes from and how it has evolved. In this I find my visits at the Tour D'Argent Tokio a much better experience than at the visits at "Lassere" or the "Grand Vefour" in Paris. The wine list is too large for my humble expertise, I remember great Champagne (Pommery 1999 I think) and a suggested Sauternes by the glass that was fine. Unfortunately I lost my notes on the red Burgundy we were suggested but I remember that it was a good advice on the pairing with the "canneton" It is a unique experience, but you must be really interested in gastronomy and its development to fully appreciate the place and do not start thinking about the bill and the "price to value" ratio...... which is easier if you are in romantic mood. More

I was served like a Princess. I had the pleasure to be invited to this landmark of restaurants in 1986... I will never forget the Chateauneuf du Pape Champagne

Let's get this out of the way: I've heard very different opinions about La Tour D'Argent worldwide, whether the one in Japan or Paris, etc. As we were fortunate enough in knowing the GM here via a friend, it is possible our great experience was... ensured from the moment we booked the table. As for our dinner it was impeccable to say the least. Staff were very friendly, formidably efficient and courteous all at once. Table setting and surroundings was exactly as expected from a Michelin starred venue and the food was exquisite. It was my first taste of Canard au Sang and it was sensational (though I did try to forget the prep procedure!). And yes, I did keep my little card with the duck number as memorabilia. Even for those with ethical issues regarding food, this dish should be tried once at least! Needless to say all dishes were superbly executed and the visual element is all part of the show as are the grand theatrics in table service; if this is something you do not enjoy then La Tour D'Argent is not for you. A great place for (very) special occasions, important business meetings and 'one-offs' as the experience, while amazing, certainly comes at a hefty price! Lots of dish-washing and pot-noodles after this one. More

The main location in Paris has a real history, having opened in 1582. Renaud Augier, winner of the Un des Meilleurs Ouvriers de France (MOF) award, breathes new life into classic dishes with modern sensibilities. Specialities with an especially solid reputation include young duck roast made with duck that carries a serial number, which was enjoyed by Emperor Showa, and Three Emperor’s style goose foie gras. A luxurious meal here would be a fitting end to a special day.

About Tour d’Argent Tokyo

Elegance redefined: tour d’argent tokyo – where french cuisine meets japanese serenity.

Nestled within the luxurious confines of the New Otani Hotel, Tour d’Argent Tokyo stands as an emblem of sophistication and culinary excellence. Since its inception on the 4th of September 1984, this prestigious French restaurant has remained a testament to the enduring friendship between President Yoneichi Otani and Claude Terrail, encapsulating a harmonious fusion of French gastronomy and Japanese serenity. Under the unwavering guidance of Christian Bollard, who has steered the ship from the beginning, Earned Michelin one-star status, Tour d’Argent Tokyo has consistently delivered a dining experience that transcends fashions and crises, making it an undisputed gem in the heart of Tokyo.

Tour d’Argent Tokyo takes you on a journey through time, a portal to an era when French cuisine was still a novelty in Japan. As one of the pioneering fine dining French restaurants in the country, it has played a pivotal role in introducing Japan to the splendors of French gastronomy. Today, its reputation continues to ascend, and it remains an icon of culinary excellence in the heart of Tokyo.

The very ambiance of Tour d’Argent Tokyo exudes an air of elegance and refinement. A breathtaking view of Japanese gardens provides the backdrop to your dining experience, creating a serene and visually enchanting atmosphere. The subtle interplay between traditional Japanese aesthetics and classic French opulence is a sight to behold, setting the stage for a memorable dining experience.

2006 — today

André Terrail, the grandfather of the current owner, bought the Tour d'Argent from Frédéric Delair in 1914 and made Adolphe Dugléré's recipes and the rare bottles of Café Anglais part of his legend.

A tireless entrepreneur, the tour d'argent joins the collection of his many establishments, including san régis, georges v in paris, escargot montorgueil and potel & chabot. in 1947, andré terrail handed over the reins of the tour d'argent to his son, claude. under his leadership, the tour d'argent opened a second restaurant in tokyo, celebrated its 400th anniversary, and underwent a number of changes, keeping it at the very top of world gastronomy., a visionary entrepreneur and leader of men, history will remember him as a great maître de maison whose favourite maxim was: "there is nothing more serious than pleasure". passed away in 2006, his son andré is now carrying on the history of our great house. he joined the family business in 2003 and took over from his father in 2006. andré thus began a new chapter in the illustrious history of la tour. while meeting the expectations of a demanding clientele, he is committed to developing the company while respecting its heritage, and relies on a team of top professionals to embrace the spirit of the time., a unique historical heritage.

On the banks of the Seine

On the banks of the Seine

The first forks, the tower coat of arms, exceptional food and drink, lecoq, first chef of the tour d'argent ... and of napoleon, the three emperors' dinner, frédéric delair & the numbered duckling, le café anglais, a new decor, the tower rises, andré terrail, a legacy looking to the future.

Under Henry III, opposite the wine port and just past the Porte Saint-Bernard, a certain Rourteau opened an elegant inn that welcomed the King’s lords. The adjacent Château de la Tournelle, built of silvery Champagne stone, gave its name to the establishment, which became known as the Hostellerie de la Tour d’Argent.

16 th century

Already used in some Italian homes, the fork made its appearance in France at the Tour d’Argent. In order not to stain the immaculate strawberry that fashion imposed on the necks of gentlemen, Henri IV inaugurated this utensil at a dinner that caused quite a stir in Paris. From then on, the Tour d’Argent became the place to be, and Henri IV regularly came there to enjoy “La Poule d’Afrique ou l’Anguille des Bois” and “thick slices of heron pâté”.

18 th century

It was this same Henry IV who granted the Tour d’Argent the honour of bearing arms, and until the reign of Louis XIV the coat of arms “Cuisinier – Oyer – traiteur” could be seen above the hostelry door. The restaurant’s arms were: “Argent a plate covered with Sable between three wreaths of ivy and Vert”, while those of the hostelry were “a Tower Argent embattled on a field of Gules”.

From the time of Cardinal de Richelieu to the French Revolution, La Tour d’Argent remained the place for fine dinners. Legend has it that the Duke of Richelieu, the Cardinal’s nephew, hosted a dinner for forty people over a menu consisting entirely of beef prepared in thirty different ways! It was at the end of this meal that coffee cups first appeared. Excellent chocolate was also served at the Tour d’Argent. In a letter written in 1671, Madame de Sévigné wrote to her daughter that she enjoyed her chocolate every day on the Quai de la Tournelle.

With the revolutionary turmoil behind him, Lecoq, the imperial chef, rebuilt the Tour d’Argent restaurant. The restaurant once again became a venue for famous gourmets such as the Duc de Morny and the Countess Le Hon, the Lady of the Camellias and Lord Seymour.

It was in 1867, at the time of the Paris Universal Exhibition, that the Café Anglais reached its apogee. Just imagine! Alexander II, Tsar of all the Russias, the Tsarevitch and future Alexander III, William I, King of Prussia and future Emperor, as well as Prince Otto von Bismarck gathered at the same table. For these exceptional guests, Chef Dugléré will be preparing an exceptional menu comprising five starters, six main courses and four desserts.

For nearly seventy years, La Tour d’Argent has been supplied of its precious ducks by Burgaud in Chalans, Vendée, recognised as a “quality artisan producer” by the Collège Culinaire de France.

In 1911, on the eve of the First World War, André Terrail bought the Tour d’Argent. By marrying the daughter of Claudius Burdel, then owner of the Café Anglais, he brought together the gastronomic heritage of Frédéric and that of the no less illustrious Adolphe Dugléré, chef at the Café Anglais, no less than the most popular Parisian establishment of the Second Empire.

Before 1936, the Tour d’Argent restaurant, then on the ground floor, was covered in wood panelling. A sumptuous wrought-iron gate marked the new entrance, moved from 15 quai de la Tournelle to 17, at the corner of quai de la Tournelle and rue du Cardinal Lemoine.

You can imagine the architectural prodigies that had to be deployed to build the now-famous grand hall on steel blocks, the weight of which the main building would not have been able to support. At first, it was an open terrace, which was then covered with tarpaulins, and then with huge bay windows. Little by little, the Tower took on the unique structure it has retained ever since: the second dining room was opened up, the kitchens moved to the sixth floor, a slightly larger lift was installed, and the Tour d’Argent, with its breathtaking view of Paris, Notre Dame Cathedral and its islands, was born!

In 1947, André Terrail handed over the reins of the Tour d’Argent to his son, Claude. Under his leadership, the Tour d’Argent opened a second restaurant in Tokyo, celebrated its 400th anniversary, and underwent a number of changes to maintain its position at the very highest level of world gastronomy. A visionary entrepreneur and leader of men, history will remember him as a great Maître de Maison whose favourite maxim was: “There is nothing more serious than pleasure”. His son, André, who took over at his father’s death in 2006, continues the history of this great household.

The Tour d’Argent is not a museum but a theatre – Claude Terrail understood this perfectly – and for André Terrail, the challenge is to pass on the family heritage with an eye to the future. In 2022, buoyed by his initial successes and surrounded by a team of enthusiasts, André Terrail dared to take the boldest gamble since the 1936 renovation by his grandfather of the same name, who took the restaurant up to the 6th floor. At the end of a titanic worksite lasting more than a year and led by architect Franklin Azzi, La Tour d’Argent reopens its doors in August 2023 to unveil a revamped restaurant as well as completely new, tailor-made spaces. These immersive experiences, from the ground floor to the roof of the Tower, have been thought out down to the last detail by André Terrail, captain of the ship, who is thus brilliantly ushering La Tour d’Argent into a new century where the excellence, generosity and modernity of the House shine together in the Parisian sky.
