Cannon Beach Oregon

Nothing stokes nostalgia for the 1980’s more than checking out the original Goonies filming locations in Oregon! There was a time after the movie was released when every 80’s kid wanted a treasure map and to go in search of One-Eyed Willy’s lost treasure!

Any Goonies fans planning an Oregon trip should make sure Astoria is on their list as it was here that the majority of the iconic Goonie movie scenes were filmed. We’ve put together this list of our favorite Goonies filming locations near Astoria, including a map of all the locations and tips for visiting them all.

Goonies Filming Locations

Most of the Goonies filming locations are dotted around the town of Astoria in Oregon so movie fans should aim to spend most of their time here. Make sure to check out the other things to do in Astoria while you search for all the locations! We hope you have as much fun exploring the Goonies filming locations as we did, just try not to truffle shuffle too much! It’s also possible to visit most of the locations on a day trip from Portland .

1 | County Jail (Oregon Film Museum): Jailhouse

This is easily one of the most recognisable Goonies filming locations in Astoria. The county jail in Astoria was the jailhouse where Jake Fratelli was held until his family helped him escape. It’s possible to visit the cell where he was held and the actual jeep that was used by the Fratellis is usually parked out in front of the jailhouse.

The county jail is now home to the Oregon Film Museum which celebrates the history of film-making in Oregon. The self-guided tour of the museum is short at less than 30 minutes but visitors can see the cell where some of the Goonies scenes were actually shot.

2 | The Goonies House

Address: 368 38th Street, Astoria:   Click here for exact location

This is probably the most famous Goonies filming location in Astoria and the one that all Gonnies fans will want to see in person. The owner of the house has welcomed back Goonies fans in recent months (some of our readers have mentioned there is a donation box on the drive). Visitors are requested to respect parking restrictions and only access the drive way by foot.

There is no street parking close to The Goonies House, so you may want to park a few blocks away and walk to The Goonies house.

The Goonies Filming Locations tip: as with any private property, please respect the owners’ wishes when visiting the Goonies house.

5 | Astoria Coffee Co

Address: 304 37th St, Astoria. Click for exact location

Be sure to make a quick stop at the cross walk opposite Astoria Coffee Co in Astoria. It is here where Rosalita is seen crossing the street as the Fratellis speed past with the cops in pursuit.

6 | Lower Columbia Bowl

Address: 826 Marine Dr, Astoria

The scene where Chunk, holidng his pizza and milk shake, sees the car chase through the window of is shot from the Lower Columbia Bowling alley.  Today the building is still operating as a bowling alley and you can see the glass where Chunk viewed the car chase from.

7 | Flavel House Museum

Address: 441 8th St, Astoria

One of the most beautiful buildings in Astoria is the Astoria Historical Museum. In the movie the Goonies cycle down the hill past the museum in search of One Eye’d Willie. Mikey’s father, Mr Walsh, worked as a museum curator. Visitors to Astoria can do a self-guided tour of this historic house that lasts around an hour.

8 | Ecola State Park

Ecola State Park is home to several Goonies filming locations that visitors will instantly recognise from the movie.

One of the best-known locations is the spot where the Fratelli’s had their hideout and where the Goonies started their treasure hunt. Known as the Lighthouse Lounge in the movie, the hideout was purpose-built for filling and taken down afterwards. Today you can visit the location of the scene where a small structure stands in place of the hideout in the movie.

Lighthouse Lounge Ecola State Park

The second scene is when the Goonies stop on their bikes when searching for the start of the treasure map. This scene is from along the Indian Beach trail through Ecola State Park.

Indian Beach Trail Ecola State Park

There a numerous other scene shot in the park and the road where Mikey’s brother (Brandon) is pushed off his bike is in the area.

9 | Cannon Beach

Address: Cannon Beach

The magnificient Cannon Beach is where the Fratelli car chase came to an end. It was the location of the 3rd Annual ORV Ralley and was filled with cars and spectators in the scene. Cannon Beach is also where the final scene from Point Break was filmed

10 | John Warren Field

Address: 1898-1828 Exchange St, Astoria Click for exact location

The scene with Andy at cheer practice was filmed at John Warren Field. Unfortunately, the site is now the location the Columbia Memorial Hospital but some of the grassy area from John Warren field is still visible.

11 | Cauldron Point – Goat Rock Beach California

Address: Goat Rock Beach, Sonoma Coast State Park Click for exact location

It’s often thought that the final scene in the movie, where One-Eyed Willie’s ship sails into the sunset, was not shot at Indian Beach. In fact, the final scene from the Goonies was shot at Goat Rock Beach in California.

You can park on Duane St. Pedestrians are at least tolerated on.l 38th St. There is a box for donations. Please put some cash in it to express gratitude. This is a sacred place for some of us. Show respect lke you would in a church. My son was 7 years old when we saw this movie. His name is Michael but we didn’t call him Mikey

Thank you for the info, and so recent (Nov 2020), good to know about the donation box, it’s well worth it!

Thank you. Very helpful to us “older” generations who watched it with our little boys.

Still looks great! – September 1 2022 Donation for sure 😊

I was 5 going on 6 when the movie was released. It was definitely one of my favorites. In fact those closest to me called me Mikey – some still do to this day. 🙂

Thanks for the info. I have been to Oregon and Washington a few times, and this is for sure on my list for a future trip.

PS It’s Monday, 11:30 am. No other pilgrim’s here now. I parked beside Data’s house…the blue one on the corner.

We went and saw the house today. DO NOT DRIVE UP THE DRIVEWAY! The owners just recently let people start seeing the house again and one way that can be ruined is by ignoring the clearly stated signs. Great experience.

I’m going to Astoria in July 2021 and cannot wait to visit these locations. I am MOST excited about the house now being accessible by foot!!! I will definitely leave a donation next month if I can walk up there.

We visited the Goonies house and Data’s house this evening. Signs clearly say no cars but that you are welcome to walk the driveway up. Further, as mentioned there is a donation box at the house. Well worth the stop, and the owners have some awesome gardening skills!

Fab, thanks for the update! Hope you enjoyed it!

Can you stand on the porch

I was able to leave a donation via Venmo! The owner was very sweet and commented on it. Such a cool bit of history!

Awesome place to visit one of the greatest movies of all times!

one of the greatest? you mean the GREATEST

Well, maybe one day we will fly from Britain to Oregon to see Astoria. Fingers crossed. 🙂

Spent a week in Astoria in Sept 2023, visited several movie scenes but mostly the Goonies locations. Astoria is a wonderful place that we just came across during a month touring Oregon, the trolley ride along the front is a must. Oregon and WS are fabulous to visit.

The Goonies is one of the best-loved 1980s adventure movies. The tale of friends searching for One-Eyed Willy’s hidden treasure was a huge hit on its release in 1985 and continues to win the hearts of audiences today.

tour goonies house astoria

The story is set in a picturesque fictional town in Astoria, Oregon on the Pacific coast. It’s here where our teenage heroes set off on their quest for the pirate’s loot to save their homes from demolition.

Whether you’re a fan of the movie or just visiting Astoria as part of your travels, the movie’s filming locations are worth checking out. They provide a fascinating insight into Astoria’s history and showcase its stunning shoreline, idyllic Douglas fir-lined streets, and neighborhoods sporting picture-postcard Colonial Revival-style houses.

More than a movie – why The Goonies is still loved today

The Goonies was one of the biggest box office  hits  of the 1980s. While it’s now nearing its 40th anniversary, the film continues to be adored by fans new and old. It’s no surprise the film has transcended the silver screen. It spawned the much-loved top 10 single “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough” by Cyndi Lauper and coined the phrases “Truffle Shuffle” and “Hey You Guys.”

Its role in pop culture is undiminished today. For example, Funko released the board game “Goonies Never Say Die” in 2021. Elsewhere, Blueprint Gaming created The Goonies Jackpot King game which can be played at popular online casinos like  MrQ . The five-reel, three-row game features many recognizable elements from the film – from Mikey’s copper medallion to skulls, gold coins, and pirate ships.

Where To Visit In Astoria

One of the most visited places is the Astoria Jailhouse which features in the opening scene. This is where the Fratelli family (played by Anne Ramsey, Joe Pantoliano, and Robert Davi) escape the clutches of the local sheriff.

Today it’s home to the Oregon Film Museum. Here, at 732 Duane Street, you can discover stories from the making of The Goonies and find out about other notable films shot in Astoria, including Kindergarten Cop and National Lampoon’s Animal House .

The property known as “The Goonies House” is where Mikey (Sean Astin) and Brand (Josh Brolin) live. It’s located at 368 38th Street off Franklin Avenue. There’s no parking, so you have to make your way up to the house on foot. In the movie we see  Data  (Ke Huy Quan) use a zipline from his bedroom window to enter Mikey’s living room. As you’d expect, his house is located just across the street.

Other must-see locations include the Fratelli’s hideout in Ecola State Park. Although the bar they’re holed up in was purpose-built for the movie and removed afterward, there’s a small structure marking its location today.

While here, check out the coastal views the Goonies witnessed when they checked the treasure map before going underground. You can’t miss Haystack Rock, one of the most famous local landmarks when walking along the Indian Beach Trail. Other scenes were shot in this area, such as when Brand gets thrown off the cliff while riding the pink bicycle he stole.

Astoria is a wonderful place to visit whether or not you’re a Goonies fan. However, the classic adventure movie adds a little extra magic to your trip, so it’s well worth checking out some of its most notable filming locations.

A Goonies Tour of Astoria

tour goonies house astoria

Astoria was a home to the Goonies even before the movie was filmed. Oregon's greatest achievement in beach towns is—as the locals will tell you—a "quaint drinking village with a fishing problem," full of working-class seafarers, third-generation shopkeepers and Portland runaways.

It ain't just the Goonies house and the old Clatsop County jail. It is a forever-home for misfits with heart, a town of dive bars and breweries, ramshackle 1920s mansions with boarded-up siding, and a standalone J.C. Penney that resolutely refuses to say die. Here is a guide to the places in Astoria where The Goonies was filmed—and the places where the Goonie spirit lives on.

Mikey Walsh's House

368 38th St., Astoria.

Sandi Preston, from her home in California, prayed for the Goonies house. She loved The Goonies so much she prayed for four years after visiting Astoria the first time, until the house inhabited by One-Eyed-Willie true-believer Mikey Walsh finally came up for sale.

"I asked God if he would give me the Goonie house," Preston told The Washington Post in 2010 ,"and he did." It is still a site of pilgrimage for thousands each year. To get there, you follow the Goonies parking arrows away from the house to the mildly disheveled John Jacob Astor Elementary on 38th Street—everything in Goonieville is disheveled, because the beach air does grim work—and then walk three blocks uphill to a sign that says "Private Drive: Goonies on Foot Welcomed."

It is the second such sign: The first was stolen almost immediately after being planted, and so the current version is plunged into heavy concrete. On warm days, the sidewalks up and down 38th Street fill with the faithful, gawking at a wealth of no-trespassing signs, and signs asking visitors that they please, dear Lord, not block the driveway. An older man walks out to fetch his newspaper and eyes a family of six pushing a stroller uphill. "Goonies, Goonies, Goonies, Goonies!" he exclaims, and shuts his front door tight.

Atop the private drive, the Preston-Walsh house sports two flags—one American, one Israeli—and a bright yellow Porsche Boxster tagged with a "NOBAMA" sticker.

On our visit, Preston's handlebar-mustached husband, John, was replacing the front steps. "For the upcoming 30th anniversary tours?" we asked. "I'm building steps," he said gruffly, "because we need steps."

The Goondocks house, including the attic, will be open for public tours on The Goonies 30th anniversary weekend, June 5-7. You will be welcomed on foot, but not with your shoes on.

Data's House

344 38th St., Astoria.

Data's filmic home is owned by the same family, the Fullers, who once also owned Mikey's house next door. The massive house is still blue as a Windows homescreen, still technically within zipline distance of Mikey's, and still owned by the Fuller family—split now between heirs Lloyd and Catherine.

732 Duane St., Astoria, 325-2203, oregonfilmmuseum.org .

Every now and then, somebody shows up at the Oregon Film Museum and sadly asks to bail out his cousin. It used to be the jail, and people who've been locked up have very long memories. ("I've been in there," says Rhonda, the bartender from Labor Temple bar down the street. "I'm not proud of it.") It was also the jail the Fratelli brothers broke out of, in the whiz-bang car-chase action sequence that kicks off The Goonies . The real jail is now across the street.

tour goonies house astoria

As a museum, it's only 5 years old—created just in time for Astoria's 25th anniversary Goonies celebration. Within, there are jail cells, a video about Kindergarten Cop , and a series of scenes you can re-create while filming yourself with digital cameras—the car scene from The Goonies , something-something Free Willy , and something-something from Cthulhu . It is a museum based less on artifacts, and more on nostalgia itself.

Flavel House Museum

441 8th St., 325-2203, Astoria, cumtux.org .

In the film, Mikey's dad is assistant curator at an unnamed museum. This, as it turns out, is the actual Flavel House Museum, named after heroic sandbar pilot Capt. George Flavel, who was hailed by newspapers in the late 19th century as a "grave, saturnine, sphinx; sour, dour, cold and crabbed, turning to gold all he touched without a friend and suspicious of all."

He was also one of Astoria's first millionaires. He married his 14-year-old sweetheart at the age of 30—which was considered normal—but scandalized the township by installing the region's first indoor toilet. Today, the home is beautiful but oddly haunted, arranged as if the family had only just now escaped in a hurry, leaving children's books strewn about the bed, the closet door ajar, and a bird carefully preserved under glass.

tour goonies house astoria

Meanwhile, the family's descendants all moved into a different Flavel house that was finally auctioned off last December. Derelict and in ruin, it had stood vacant for the 24 years since owner "Hatchet" Harry Flavel stabbed a man in the abdomen and fled the state. He was finally arrested, months later in Pennsylvania, after stealing towels from a motel.

Lower Columbia Bowl

826 Marine Drive, Astoria, 325-3321, lcbowl.com .

The midcentury Lower Columbia Bowl, which now offers free soda refills to Oregon Lottery players, is the bowling alley where Chunk witnessed "the most amazing thing I ever saw," out the window—the prison-break car chase by the Fratelli brothers that begins the movie.

The window view contains a McDonald's sign not visible onscreen: This was covered up by the pizza slice Chunk smeared against the window. "It took six or seven tries for him to get it right," says one of the bowling alley's longtime employees, Cindy McEwan. "By the end, he was crying. He couldn't get the pizza in the right spot to block the sign."

The alley now has a little shrine where Chunk once stood—although they've actually raised the floor three feet—with a thick guest book signed by hundreds from around the country and world, from England to Australia to Niger.

East End Mooring Basin

Dock 36, Astoria.

The docks. This is where the Fratelli brothers conclude the Astoria portion of their car chase (which continues, magically, on Cannon Beach), and it is where Stef dunked herself into a crab barrel. But this year, most of the fishing at these docks is conducted by a horde of 2,300 sea lions and harbor seals—10 times as many as there were five years ago—a layer of braying cellulite coating every available dock surface. Their maddening racket can be heard all the way up the cliffs at the Goonies house.

Around Astoria, rumors abound of sea lion attacks. One guy will tell you they ate the fish right off his friend's hook. The next says they ate a shih tzu off a leash.

Astorians have tested electric mats to piss off the sea lions, and local police brought in a 16-foot fiberglass orca, which they towed around by boat in futile hopes of scaring them. Lately, they've been scaring sea lions with beach balls.

tour goonies house astoria

On a more sinister note, at least ten sea lions have been shot or killed.

"No one's happy," says James, a bartender at Rogue ale house along the waterfront. "The fisherman aren't happy. The cruise ships aren't happy. The Native Americans aren't happy. They're eating all the fish."

Astoria Coffee Co.

304 37th St., Astoria, 325-7768.

The Stop-n-Snack mini-mart, featured briefly in The Goonies ' bike-ride and car-chase scenes (and in a much longer outtake involving a brawl), is now a coffee roastery with medium roasts, biscotti, and a side business in ceramic ware.

"From the 1890s to the 1990s, this was a little grocery store," says co-owner and roaster Rick Murray, who has the sun-tightened skin and rough chin beard of a fisherman. "And then the big grocery stores came and did what big grocery stores do to little grocery stores. Good for me, I guess. Now I live upstairs and roast downstairs."

Before starting his roastery, Murray worked at Starbucks for 10 years. "But they forgot everything I taught them," he says.

John Warren Field

tour goonies house astoria

Exchange Street between 18th and 20th streets, Astoria.

The field where Andy leads a cheerleading squad in the opening credits—thus establishing her 1980s top-of-the-pecking-order status—had been home to the Astoria High Fishermen since 1928, ground for the Fishermen's epic rivalry against the cross-town Knappa Loggers.

But as of September 2014, the Warren grounds are fallow, future home of an Oregon Health & Science University hospital expansion. As part of a deal that Astoria football coach Howard Rub hailed as a "tremendous partnership," the city built the Fishermen a new artificial-turf field as a cap for an old landfill.

Ecola State Park and Haystack Rock

tour goonies house astoria

Cannon Beach

Some of the Goonies' most iconic images—Brand's girlie-bike ride down the forested hills of Ecola State Park, the rough-and-tumble Lighthouse Lounge gang hideout, and the mighty Haystack Rock—all come from Cannon Beach, an hour south of Astoria.

The Lighthouse Lounge was constructed only for the movie, and torn down thereafter; a picnic shelter stands on the grass near its former site, as a pale echo.

At Haystack Rock, meanwhile, tragedy is striking. The starfish in its famed tide pools have been dying of a mysterious disease, dissolving to white mush. Almost 90 percent are gone since last year, giving Haystack the faint aspect of a gravestone.

But it is still beautiful at twilight, and tourist shops nearby sell Goonies -themed medallions whose holes you can line up at sunset with the "needles," the name given to the many smaller rocks that stutter along Haystack's edge.

The worst thing Chunk ever did: "I mixed a pot of fake puke at home and then I went to this movie theater, hid the puke in my jacket, climbed up to the balcony and then I made a noise like this: hua-hua-hua-huaaaaaaa! And then I dumped it over the side, all over the people in the audience. And then, this was horrible, all the people started getting sick and throwing up all over each other. I never felt so bad in my entire life."

This could have only happened here, in this 90-year-old balconied theater with an adjunct live-music lounge called the Voodoo. Musical guests of the past two months included Corrina Repp, Stephen Malkmus, and the Minders.

For $17, the building's brunch-happy Columbian Cafe will cure the hangover Voodoo caused with the breakfast-hash equivalent of omakase at a sushi bar—chef's choice, no substitutions. Mine involved mushrooms, sausage, bok choy, walnut pesto, much egg, much spice and no carbs whatsoever.

Beer Canneries of Astoria

tour goonies house astoria

Rogue Ales Public House, 100 39th St. (Pier 39), 325-5964, rogue.com ; Buoy Beer, 1 8th St., 325-4540, buoybeer.com ; Fort George Brewery, 1483 Duane St., 325-7468, fortgeorgebrewery.com .

When filming began on The Goonies in 1984, Astoria's fishing economy was in crisis—and houses were indeed getting sold back to the banks. The old canneries, including the 1899-founded Bumble Bee cannery, were closing, and food stamps had become such a currency they were reportedly accepted as beer money at Astoria's Portway Tavern on West Marine Drive.

tour goonies house astoria

Once home to the American Can Company, Astoria Warehousing now hauls in canned salmon from Alaska by truck. The last tuna cannery in Astoria is Josephson's Smokehouse, which smokes and cans albacore as a craft product, in the back of their storefront. But the biggest industry in Astoria now is not fishing but tourism, and so alongside a seemingly abandoned cannery museum, the Bumble Bee cannery has found new life as a huge, bustling Rogue Ales Public House serving up Astoria-exclusive sour and barrel-aged beers.

tour goonies house astoria

The cannery at Cannery Pier is now home to Buoy Beer, which already hosts a tap at seemingly every bar in Astoria. But by far the biggest cannery in Astoria is Fort George Brewery, now the 12th-largest craft brewer in Oregon.

Pro tip: If you don't plan to eat, skip the spacious brewpub in favor of the much more capacious beer list at Fort George's tiny brewery tasting room.

Bars of the Workers

Labor Temple, 934 Duane St., Astoria, 325-0801, labortemple.com ; Mary Todd's Workers Bar & Grill, 281 W Marine Drive, 338-7291.

Forever on the Goondocks, Astoria's oldest bars are dedicated wholeheartedly to the workers, from fisherman's bar the Portway—densely hung with life preservers signed in Sharpie by all the old regulars—to Mary Todd's Workers Bar & Grill, where on our last visit a man loudly insisted into his phone that he "wasn't going to haul my ass all the way out there for 38 salmon."

Mary Todd's has cheap prime rib on Fridays, bras hanging from ceiling fans, and a $9 drink called the Yucca that locals will either recommend or warn you to avoid for exactly the same reason: The drink contains about a fifth of a bottle of HRD vodka. By the time you leave, you'll know everyone in the bar.

Labor Temple, a bar and diner located in an old union hall, is no longer a union shop as of four years ago—although it is apparently a popular target of local labor organizers.

The diner recently stopped its tradition of midnight breakfast (served till 2 pm) because it attracted town drunks to the bar. "I had a little squirt gun," says longtime bartender Rhonda, "and I'd squirt people if they were getting out of line. I probably 86'd half the people in town."

From the Goonies House to Haystack Rock, and the jail where Jake Fratelli made a break for it, the Oregon coast is steeped in Goonies history.

the goonies

Heyyy you guys! Avast ye and listen up, for I have a tale to tell ye about the Goonies filming locations. Have ye ever wondered where Mikey, Data, Chunk, Mouth, and Sloth embarked on their booty-busting adventure? Well, shiver me timbers and hoist the Jolly Roger, because we're about to journey to the very spot where this swashbuckling movie was filmed. We're setting our course for Astoria, Oregon , where the Goonies' treasure hunt all began on the Oregon Coast. So come aboard, ye scallywags, and let's set sail on a journey to uncover buried treasure.

the goonies

Growing up in the eighties was just simply awesome. And while we didn't have a lot of really cool high-tech things to play with, our time was mostly filled with wrecking on our bikes, catching bugs, and of course wishing we were a real life Goonie.

I have another fun fact for all you movie fans out there before we proceed. Kindergarten Cop, was also another great movie filmed in Astoria !

the goonies

The Goonies, among other great movies like The Ghostbusters, comes from a time when they really made a lot of great kids movies. The movies today for kids aren't bad, but I feel most of them can't even touch the movies we grew up with as they lack the imagination and magic that went into so many great films in those days.

The Goonies was a huge part of my childhood, and to this day remains one of my favorite movies ever made. While my children maybe don't have the same love for it that us eighties babies did, they still appreciate the flick.

Personally, I have now made my way to the Goondocks many times. That is, of course, Astoria. As a native Oregonian writing this, I am truly grateful to be so close to the hometown of one of the best movies ever made in the 80s.

Goonies Filming Locations

goonies house

First on the list of Goonies locations, and probably one of the most popular tourist attractions for Goonies lovers, was The Goonie's House in Astoria. The home is generally better known as Mikey's house. If you’re a true fan, then you know that visiting the infamous Goonie’s house is a must-do on your treasure-hunting adventure.

The iconic two-story Victorian house was famously featured in the 1985 Steven Spielberg classic and has become a popular tourist attraction and local phenomenon over the past four decades. In fact, it was recently sold to Behman Zakeri for $1.65 million, nearly 40 years after the movie first made it famous.

You might be wondering where you can find the iconic two-story Victorian house from the movie. Well, the house is located in Astoria, Oregon, along the picturesque Pacific Coast.

The house, which is better known as Mikey’s house, has been a popular tourist attraction for years, drawing in crowds of devoted fans from all over the world. But what you might not know is that the house has changed hands several times over the years, and the newest owner has recently opened up the Goonies House to the public for tours .

That’s right, you can now walk through the very same halls and climb up the same attic where Mikey and his friends plotted their epic adventure. So come on down and relive your childhood dreams of finding One-Eyed Willie’s treasure!

1. Opening Scene at John Warren Field

One of the film locations is from the beginning credits when the Fratellis are being pursued by the police, and Andy (Kerri Green) is leading cheer practice. Unfortunately, we have learned the football field was torn down in 2015. The site is now home to the Columbia Memorial Hospital, but some of the grassy area from John Warren field is still visible.

The John Warren Field previously was at 20th and Exchange Street in Astoria, Oregon.

2. Data's House From The Goonies

In the scene where Brand steals the little girl's bike, he does so in front Of Data's house. You will find Data's house on 304 38th St, in Astoria, Oregon.

Keep in mind just like Mikey's house, this is also a private residence. Parking at the nearby Astor Elementary School and walking to the homes would be the best idea to make sure and not bother the people currently living here. You'll also find a great viewpoint from the waterfront area which is across the highway.

3. Flavel House Museum

goonies filming locations

Remember where Mikey's dad works? Here's the place. It's known as the Flavel House Museum, and it is absolutely gorgeous. This Queen-Anne style house was built by millionaire Columbia River bar pilot Captain George Flavel, and in fact is now on the National Register of Historic Places. You will find this spot at 441 8th St, in Astoria, Oregon.

4. Lower Columbia Bowl

Remember when Chunk smashes his pizza and milkshake on the window? One of the funniest moments from Chunk of course, during the police car chase in the opening scene. And it was at the Lower Columbia Bowl, which you can find on 826 Marine Dr, again in Astoria, Oregon.

Hell you may even decide to stop in for a game, where they offer state of the art scoring systems, synthetic lanes, dollar off nights, and a bar.

5. The Store in Astoria

goonies filming locations

When The Goonies went to the store, this is where they went. It's just around the corner from their house in the movie. Signs had been changed to make this building into a grocery store, and the unsightly wires and poles have since been removed.

The sign says 37th Street and Lief Erikson Drive. Leif Erikson Drive is an Extension of Marine Drive and is also Highway 30. It's the main drag through Astoria going along the Columbia River. It's also called East Columbia River Highway on some maps, although I've personally never heard anyone call it by that!

6. Mouth's House

goonies filming locations

In the early scenes of the movie, Mouth's house serves as a prominent filming location. Located just up the hill from the County Jail, it features the front of the house in one scene, while another captures Mouth in his bedroom with a stunning view of the actual location visible through the window.

Address:  32 Skyline Avenue, Astoria

7. Astoria Coffee Co

Don't forget to make a brief stop at the crosswalk across from Astoria Coffee Co in Astoria. This spot is where you can catch a glimpse of Rosalita crossing the street while the Fratellis speed past in a frantic chase with the police.

Address: 304 37th St, Astoria, OR 97103

8. Ecola State Park

The Fratelli family's hideout, the Lighthouse Lounge, was built at Ecola Point and then unfortunately taken down when the movie wrapped. Today is Ecola State Park is a heavily visited recreation Park on the Oregon Coast.

According to Sean Astin, he was allowed to keep the treasure map used in the film. However, the map was lost forever when his mother discovered it several years later, thought it was just a crinkled piece of paper, and threw it in the trash.

Address: Cannon Beach, OR 97110

9. Oregon Film Museum

county jail goonies

Ah yes, we can't forget the exciting jail break scene. Today, the old jail is a museum! In a daring attempt to free his incarcerated brother from Clatsop County Jail, Francis takes matters into his own hands. With a tank of gasoline and a shot from his pistol, he sets the jailhouse ablaze, reveling in his triumph. Seeking refuge at the Lighthouse Lounge, Francis and his family bask in their newfound freedom.

However, the celebrations are cut short when a pair of FBI agents arrive to confront the Fratellis. In the ensuing confrontation, shots are fired and the agents lose their lives, leaving the Fratellis to face the consequences of their actions.

The Oregon Film Museum is a must-visit destination for any film lover. The museum is housed in the historic Clatsop County Jail, which was featured in the opening scene of the 1985 film The Goonies. The museum celebrates the history and art of filmmaking in Oregon, showcasing props, costumes, and memorabilia from some of the state's most iconic movies and TV shows.

Visitors can even step into a replica of the jail cell from The Goonies and explore the interactive exhibits that bring the state's filmmaking legacy to life. Whether you're a fan of The Goonies or simply interested in the history of filmmaking, the Oregon Film Museum is a fascinating and engaging experience that is not to be missed.

Address: 732 Duane St, in Astoria.

10. Cannon Beach

Home to Haystack Rock, which you'll see in the Goonies which they use to navigate. You can't miss Haystack Rock, as it's one of the world's tallest sea stacks.

Take a trip up Ecola Road to Cannon Beach, and you will find this incredible place, where The Goonies was filmed 26 miles south of Astoria, at Ecola State Park's Cannon Beach. Point Break and Twilight were actually filmed here too! (and no, not the silly reboot of Point Break)

11. Cauldron Point – Goat Rock Beach California

goonies filming locations

The Goonies movie is packed with breathtaking filming locations that transport you into the captivating world of the adventurous group of misfits. However, there is a common misconception that the iconic final scene featuring One-Eyed Willie's ship sailing into the sunset was filmed at Indian Beach.

Contrary to popular belief, the final scene was shot at Goat Rock Beach in California, where the crew created a stunning visual spectacle that has stayed with fans for decades. The natural beauty of Goat Rock Beach, with its picturesque scenery and rugged coastline, provided the perfect backdrop for this unforgettable cinematic moment.

It's interesting to note that despite not being filmed in Oregon, the final scene's seamless integration into the rest of the movie is a testament to the dedication and skill of the filmmakers. Additionally, visiting Goat Rock Beach allows fans to relive this magical moment and experience the awe-inspiring location that played a vital role in the film's unforgettable finale.

Overall, although the final scene in The Goonies was not shot at Indian Beach, its unique charm and appeal continue to captivate audiences and remind us of the magic that can be created on film. And, for those who want to explore this iconic filming location, Goat Rock Beach is a must-visit destination for any true Goonies fan.

We covered quite a bit of filming locations in the Goonies here, although we may have missed some. Do you know any other spots we missed? We'd love to hear from you in the comments below. The movie was filmed on location in California, and of course Oregon. Locations included were Goat Rock State Beach, California, Astoria as we've mentioned, and of course Cannon Beach.

And never forget, Goonies Never Say Die. 🏴‍☠️

Going for the ‘Goonies’ (and more) in Astoria

The Oregon town is marking the 30th anniversary in June of the filming of the hit Steven Spielberg movie ‘The Goonies.” See the Goonies house, join the party and see Astoria’s more standard tourist sights.

Share story

Children of the 1980s grew up wishing they, too, could be one of the “Goonies,” the treasure-hunting teens in the 1985 hit movie executive-produced by Steven Spielberg.

In sleepy Astoria, at Oregon’s northwest tip, grown-up “Goonies” wannabes can fulfill their dreams, at least a little, by visiting locations where the cult classic was filmed.

Astoria remains a hub for “Goonies” fandom, especially when the town celebrates the film’s 30th anniversary with a “Goonies” gathering June 4-7.

“Goonies” goings-on will include a concert; quote-along film screenings; visiting film locations; and appearances by Jeff Cohen, who portrayed the character Chunk in “The Goonies. ” (Info: travelastoria.com/trip-ideas or thegoondocks.org ).

Beyond the “Goonies” festival, visitors’ interest in the Astoria filming locations goes year-round.

Dylan Reel of Portland and David Zorob of Peoria, Ill., made a trek to Astoria for one primary reason: “We mostly came to check out the ‘Goonies’ house,” Reel said while standing in front of the home at 368 38th St., a neighborhood known in the movie as “The Goondocks.”

“ ‘Goonies’ is one of my favorite movies of all time, and the house looks just like it did in the movie,” said Reel.

Swamped with visitors

Sandi Preston bought the “Goonies” house in 2001 when it was in foreclosure. Knowing it was the “Goonies” house had sentimental value: Her children were teenagers when the movie was released, and it became a family favorite.

Initially, not many tourists came to see The Goondocks, but after the 20th anniversary “Goonies” reunion in 2005 that changed and the number of visitors steadily increased.

Sometimes as many as 1,000 people per day in the summer walk up the gravel drive, off a paved road, that serves as the entry to several homes, including Preston’s famous house.

“Though I enjoy meeting new people, it’s become very difficult to live here,” Preston said, citing the hassles of owning a piece of pop culture history. Her neighbors are frustrated with foot and vehicle traffic. “People walk up the driveway and stand in the middle of the access road or driveway and refuse to move when a resident needs to drive up or down.”

But there have been some enjoyable moments, too.

“Most endearing was a woman whose son had died, and ‘The Goonies’ was his favorite movie. She had brought his ashes to Oregon,” Preston recalled. “I asked if she wanted to scatter some in the garden, which was in full bloom, so she and her family did that. It was so sweet. I read online that another person did that, in the middle of the night, without asking for permission. Oh, well, part of owning this house, I guess.”

Astoria’s other roles

Astoria has played a role in movies beyond “The Goonies,” though that film seems to garner the most attention.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1990 comedy “Kindergarten Cop” filmed at Astor School (3550 Franklin St.). The home of the boy who sought to free the captive orca in “Free Willy” is located at 3392 Harrison Ave.

The Astoria Column has been seen in multiple movies, including 1992’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III.” The 164-step tower was a gift from a descendant of fur trader and investor John Jacob Astor, the town’s namesake, and was dedicated in 1926.

Tributes to these ’80s and ’90s films can be found at Astoria’s tiny Oregon Film Museum, housed on the first floor of the former Clatsop County Jail that was featured in the jail break scene at the beginning of “The Goonies.”

Artifacts from these movies — “The Goonies” dominates — can be found inside the three-gallery museum, which also gives visitors the opportunity to record themselves re-enacting scenes from filmed-in-Oregon productions “The Goonies,” “Kindergarten Cop” and “Twilight.” Scenes are recorded and emailed to you a few weeks later.

Astoria beyond movies

Of course, Astoria has plenty to offer beyond movie locations.

Westerberg is quick with a quip, commenting on the cost of upkeep for the 100-year-old Victorian homes perched on the Astoria hillside, looking down on the city center and the Columbia River: “Hear that swishing sound? It’s all the money being dumped into those Victorians.”

Maritime museum : The Columbia River Maritime Museum displays maritime artifacts from the Columbia River and the Pacific Northwest, including the lightship Columbia and the pilot boat Peacock. crmm.org

Fort Clatsop : Drive to the nearby Fort Clatsop, part of the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, where the Lewis and Clark Expedition camped near the mouth of the Columbia River during the winter of 1805-06. Fort Stevens : At Fort Stevens State Park, at the northwest tip of the Oregon coast, are miles of beach and the rusting hull of the century-old shipwreck of the Peter Iredale, jutting out of the sand. New owner of Astoria Goonies house wants to keep it open for movie fans

Behman and Liz Zakeri are pictured in January 2023, in front of their new home in Astoria, which was used in the filming of the 1985 cult classic "The Goonies."

The 1985 Steven Spielberg cult classic “The Goonies” has fans, superfans, and people like Behman Zakeri , who defy superlatives. Zakeri lives in Kansas, but he’s now the new owner of the home in Astoria where the movie was filmed. Since the movie first made its debut in theaters, the real Astoria house has been a tourist draw for him — and for fans from all over the world. Zakeri has seen the quintessential adventure movie countless times.

“You had the five boys and two girls, the bad guys after them. So I think that sense of adventure and that just chase for a treasure hunt — I think everybody someday wants to find an undiscovered treasure. That’s why everybody, I think, plays Powerball right? Trying to hit it.”

Zakeri lives in the Kansas City area and has no plans to make the Goonies home his primary residence. In fact, his planning for what he will do with it is “fluid.”

“It was bought as an investment, but I didn’t buy it to keep it to myself. I bought it to share it with the world,” he said. “As long as Goonies are respectful.”

By chance, one of his childhood friends — who was with him when he saw the movie for the first time — is buying the house next door. All but a couple of the other neighbors have been very supportive, Zakeri says. He and his wife Liz have been busy in the last couple of weeks, getting furniture in the house and making it welcoming.

“We’re just setting it up. People are still coming by every day. Goonies are coming up the driveway every day and taking their pictures and doing the truffle shuffle.” said Zakeri. “And if I’m outside, you know, I’m, I’m letting them walk up on the porch and stuff like that.”

He says he’s committed to making sure the house is preserved and that other die-hard fans will have access to it. What that will look like, though, is anyone’s guess. Zakeri says he’s not legally allowed to rent the home on a short-term basis, make it into a museum, or put it to other commercial use. Like the heroes of the story, he says he’ll “never say die” and that the adventure will unfold.

The Goonies House, better known as Mikey's house, is one of the most popular attractions in Astoria. The house must have changed hands within the last few months based on our visit today.

1. The signs at the bottom of the driveway near the mailboxes about trespassing and calling the police are gone. The only sign next to the mailboxes says "YES."

2. We exchanged pleasantries with both the owner (or whoever was in the house at the time) and a neighbor to the right (if you're looking at the house). Both women gave big smiles and said hi.

3. The house was in great shape. I assume the tarps mentioned by other visitors were for renovations by the new owner.

We left $20 in the donation box and parked in the boat launch lot next to the Comfort Suites. Don't park or pull over in the neighborhood nearby the house. Parking at the boat launch is $10 for the day and we left our parking ticket in the machine for the next person. Good spot to access the Riverwalk too. You can park for free at Safeway, which is a little further from the house.

Being respectful of the neighbors and neighborhood will ensure future visitors are able to enjoy access too.

The man who lives there now is very hostile to anyone walking anywhere near the house. The small donation box that used to be there and the sign that said foot traffic was accepted are long gone. We saw that one of the houses was for sale (partially visible in the movie for a brief moment), so we went up anyway. When we got halfway up the drive leading to all the houses on the hill (a public road until the telephone pole we learned from the very friendly neighbor), he came out on his porch to shout at us. We explained that we were there to see the house for sale, and he told us to go straight to the house, i.e. don't stop and take pictures.
