Howard Jones

A new wave one-stop shop will tour North America this summer when Howard Jones and ABC will be hitting stages across North America with special guest Haircut 100. The full itinerary appears below.

“I’m very excited to be hitting the road with my friends ABC and Haircut 100,” Jones enthused. “Our audiences can look forward to some seriously top tunes night after night!  Bring your celebratory selves to the party.”

Popular on Variety

Of course, the evening will play out like an evening filled with hits from the early days of MTV, when the so-called “Second British Invasion” dominated the channel. Jones’ hits “New Song” and “What Is Love,” and “Things Can Only Get Better” probably segued into or out of ABC’s “Look of Love,” “Poison Arrow” and “Be Near Me” and Haircut 100’s “Love Plus One” and “Fantastic Day.”

All three acts have gone on to other successes, but this tour brings together the songs and sounds that first brought them to fame.

Jan. 6 Panel Releases Video Of Capitol Tour Before Attack

tour the capitol

The House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection released video on Wednesday of a tour led by a Republican lawmaker the day before the attack, showing participants taking photos of stairwells and tunnels in the Capitol complex.

The panel released the video as it renewed calls for the GOP lawmaker, Rep. Barry Loudermilk of Georgia, to speak to the committee about the tour. Loudermilk has so far declined the interview and denied any wrongdoing, and the chief of the U.S. Capitol Police said in a letter to Republicans this week that after reviewing surveillance video, "we do not consider any of the activities we observed as suspicious."

Still, the committee says it has questions. In addition to the surveillance video, the footage released by the panel also includes video of an unidentified man walking toward the Capitol on Jan. 6 holding a flagpole that appears to have a sharpened end, which he says is "for a certain person." The committee says the man who took the video, who is not seen in the footage but is laughing and urging on the man with the flag, is one of the tour participants who was taking photos inside the Capitol the day before.

Later footage taken by the same man shows people approaching the Capitol. The man taking the video then makes apparent threats toward Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Reps. Jerrold Nadler and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

"They're coming in, coming in like white on rice for Pelosi, Nadler, even you, AOC," the man says in the video released by the committee. "We're coming to take you out and pull you out by your hairs. … When I get done with you, you're going to need a shine on top of that bald head."

Day 3 Of Jan. 6 Hearings: Trump Pressure On Pence To Reject Election

The panel did not say whether the man got into the Capitol or whether he has faced any charges. While more than 800 people have been charged for breaking into the building, or for violently beating police officers, thousands of other protesters were outside the building or on the National Mall and did not engage in violence. The breach temporarily halted the certification of President Joe Biden's victory.

In a Wednesday letter to Loudermilk renewing the request for an interview, Rep. Bennie Thompson, the committee's chairman, said the panel "had hoped to show you the video evidence when you met with us" but was releasing it publicly because Loudermilk had so far declined. Thompson said the areas photographed and recorded by some on the tour are "not typically of interest to tourists, including hallways, staircases, and security checkpoints."

Another member of the panel, Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger, tweeted after the video was released: "Please take a look. These are not normal tour routes, the Capitol was closed to tours."

The back-and-forth with Loudermilk has underscored the committee's difficulty in getting any information from Republicans who were communicating with President Donald Trump, the White House or the rioters during the insurrection or beforehand as Trump strategized about how to overturn his election defeat. While the panel has conducted more than 1,000 interviews, five GOP lawmakers have defied subpoenas, including House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy, who spoke with Trump that day.

Loudermilk has not been subpoenaed, and there is no evidence that he knew that any of the participants on his tour were outside the Capitol the next day.

The Georgia Republican said in a statement after the video's release that the panel "is undermining the Capitol Police and doubling down on their smear campaign." He said there is "nothing there" and noted that none of the locations they visited were breached on Jan. 6.

"As Capitol Police confirmed, nothing about this visit with constituents was suspicious," Loudermilk said. In an interview with reporters in the Capitol, he said he condemned the violent language against lawmakers but that "no one in that group showed that kind of aggression that day."

Police reviewed the footage of Loudermilk's tour as the committee requested his interview and after some Democrats said immediately after the attack that Republicans had led "reconnaissance tours" of the Capitol building beforehand. There has been no evidence that happened.

"This false narrative that the Committee and Democrats continue to push, that Republicans, including myself, led reconnaissance tours is verifiably false," Loudermilk said in his statement.

In a letter sent Monday to Republicans on the House Administration Committee, of which Loudermilk is a member, Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger said there were about 15 people on the tour and that Loudermilk was showing constituents around the Capitol complex, which was closed to visitors at the time because of coronavirus concerns. But they did not enter the Capitol itself. The group also walked around one of the buildings without the congressman, Manger said.

The surveillance video released by the committee shows the group at entrances to tunnels that lead to the Capitol but not entering the building. The Capitol complex includes 20 buildings and facilities, including House and Senate offices, and underground tunnels connect most of the buildings to the Capitol.

"There is no evidence that Representative Loudermilk entered the U.S. Capitol with this group on January 5, 2021," Manger said in the letter. "We train our officers on being alert for people conducting surveillance or reconnaissance, and we do not consider any of the activities we observed as suspicious."

Republicans on the House Administration Committee had previously said they reviewed security footage from Jan. 5 and said there were "no tours, no large groups, no one with MAGA hats on."

But Thompson and Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, the chairman and vice-chairwoman of the Jan. 6 panel, said last month that their review of the evidence "directly contradicts that denial."

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

Bright flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Moscow Substation

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

Gov. Whitmer tours facility, announces more water infrastructure projects on the way

LANSING, Mich. (WILX/WNEM/WLUC) - Aging water infrastructure continues to be an issue throughout Michigan, as Governor Gretchen Whitmer Monday announced a $290 million expansion of the MI Clean Water Plan.

Governor Whitmer toured the $85 million in upgrades coming to the Delta Township wastewater facility on Monday. Since 2019, the MI Clean Water Plan has awarded over $4 billion to communities to upgrade their drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities. However, more funding is needed.

“Michigan is home to over 20 percent of the world’s fresh surface water, millions of acres of forest and farmland, and 11,000 inland lakes. We’ve got to protect these precious natural resources,” Gov. Whitmer said.

Most of the state’s water systems are over 50-years-old and reports show Michigan has a near $1 billion gap in funding water infrastructure project needs. Communities have requested $3.5 billion in water infrastructure projects next year, but the state won’t have even a quarter of what’s needed.

“Because of our clean water needs, almost every village and city in my district has deep concerns about their ability to expand housing or economic development, or at the simplest level just take care of their residents,” Rep. Angela Witwer (D), Delta Township, admitted.

The $290 million will be made available to communities through loans and will be used to finance projects like removing lead service lines or upgrading drinking water and wastewater plants. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy Director Phil Roos said the upgrades will ensure clean drinking water and save families money.

“It’s really going to help us do our job. To support communities, to update aging infrastructure, to improve the reliability of treatment systems, to increase water quality and actually decrease the cost associated with providing water, and that’s going to translate to lower costs for residents,” Roos said.

While more work needs to be done, they say the extra funding should help them get closer to their goal of providing clean drinking water to communities across the state.

Healthcare Cover Letter Samples & Examples That Worked in 2024

Julia Gergelova — Resume Writer

Crafting a compelling healthcare cover letter doesn't have to be as daunting as it often seems. This guide can equip you with practical tips and illustrative examples to help you stand out from the crowd.

Emergency Relief Worker Cover Letter Sample

Aside from your resume , a cover letter is a key element in your application — it's your personal pitch and an opportunity to set yourself apart in the dense healthcare industry. An outstanding cover letter can differentiate you from other candidates and steer the recruiter's perspective in your favor.

And so, without further ado, keep reading to learn all about:

  • Formatting your healthcare cover letter
  • Creating your healthcare cover letter header
  • Writing an effective cover letter headline
  • Personalizing the greeting of your healthcare cover letter
  • Writing a compelling healthcare cover letter introduction
  • Highlighting your best professional skills & accomplishments in healthcare
  • Ending your healthcare cover letter with a strong conclusion
  • Avoiding common mistakes on a healthcare cover letter
  • Average salary and job outlook for healthcare professionals

1. Format your healthcare cover letter properly

Just like a well-organized medical chart, your healthcare cover letter should be clear, structured, and easy to read. Here's how to properly format your cover letter :

  • Length: Stick to one page. Keep your cover letter concise and to the point.
  • Alignment: Align all your text to the left. This ensures a clean, professional look.
  • Margins: Use standard one-inch margins on all sides, so your cover letter looks tidy and well-spaced.
  • Font: Choose a professional, easy-to-read font such as Arial, Times New Roman, or Calibri. Typically, a font size between 10 and 12 points works well.
  • Sections: A well-formatted cover letter usually has three sections: opening paragraph, body, and closing.
  • Avoid dense text blocks: Keep your paragraphs short and manageable. You can also use bulleted lists where appropriate to break up information.

If you format your healthcare cover letter right, the document will be as easy to follow as a good presentation, guiding your potential employer through your qualifications and convincing them you're the right person for the role.

Create your cover letter fast with artificial intelligence.

2. create an effective healthcare cover letter header.

The header of your healthcare cover letter is like the topmost section of a patient's medical record. It bears crucial identification information, providing an immediate context and line of communication to the reader.

Your header should incorporate two subsections — one for your contact information and one for your recipient's details:

Your Information:

  • Mailing address (city and state is sufficient)
  • Phone number
  • Professional email address
  • LinkedIn Profile (optional)

Recipient's information:

  • Recipient's full name (try to determine the hiring manager's name)
  • Professional title
  • Company name
  • Company address

Let's clarify this with examples. One is an incorrectly formulated header and the other adheres to the proper presentation style:

Incorrect healthcare cover letter header example

John Doe 123 Road (123) 456-7890 john@email

Company Address

Why is this header incorrect? The incomplete address, lack of professional email, and missing LinkedIn profile make it unprofessional. Moreover, the company's specifics, such as the hiring manager's name and their title, are not included.

Correct healthcare header example

John Doe 123 Road, Springfield, IL (123) 456-7890 [email protected] LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/johndoe January 1, 2023

To: Sarah Smith Human Resources Manager United Healthcare 456 Lane, Chicago, IL

Why is this header correct? It includes John's full name, abbreviated address, phone number, professional email address, and LinkedIn profile link. Plus, it notes the date and all the necessary information about the recipient, including their full name, job title, company name, and company address.

Remember that starting your healthcare cover letter with a thoroughly composed and professional header sets the right tone. It demonstrates your attention to detail and exhibits essential qualities such as diligence and respect for formal communication.

3. Write a compelling headline for your healthcare cover letter

The headline, sitting right below your header, serves as an introductory statement to your letter. It's your chance to draw in your reader by succinctly stating the position you're applying for and briefly highlighting your most relevant qualification or experience.

Your headline should:

  • Mention the job title you're applying for.
  • Showcase a key accomplishment or a unique qualification that sets you apart.

Incorrect healthcare professional’s headline example

Application for Healthcare Position

Why is this example incorrect? This headline is too vague. It doesn't specify the job title, nor does it highlight any unique achievements or qualifications.

Correct healthcare professional’s headline example

Registered Nurse with 5 Years of ICU Experience Seeking the RN Position at United Healthcare

Why is this example strong? This headline is on point. It immediately communicates the job being applied for (registered nurse) and underscores a significant accomplishment (5 years of ICU experience). This already sets the candidate apart, piquing the interest of the hiring manager.

A compelling headline can be the hook that reels the hiring manager into your cover letter. By being specific about the role you're applying for and presenting a notable achievement or attribute, your headline will serve as an effective preview to the rest of your content.

4. Personalize the greeting of your healthcare cover letter

The greeting of your cover letter is more important than you might think. Just as you would address a patient by their name to establish a personal connection, properly addressing the hiring manager can make your cover letter more engaging and set the right tone.

When a specific individual's name is used, it signals that you've put effort into understanding the company's team and that you respect and acknowledge your prospective employer.

Here are a few ways to personalize your greeting:

  • If you know the hiring manager's full name and title , use them: "Dear Human Resources Director Jane Johnson,".
  • If you know the name, but aren't sure about the title , use a more general greeting like "Dear Ms. Johnson,"..
  • If you know the hiring manager's title but not their name , use this information. For instance, "Dear Hiring Manager," or "Dear Human Resources Director,"
  • If you don't have any specific information , opt for a more general greeting: "Dear Hiring Team," or "Dear Sir/Madam,".

Regardless of the scenario, do your utmost to avoid starting your cover letter without any greeting — this can risk your letter coming off as impersonal or rushed.

Remember, attention to detail is as relevant in your healthcare cover letter as it is in patient care. Being attentive to the small details, such as customizing your greeting, adds a personal touch that can help set you apart from other applicants.

5. Write a compelling healthcare cover letter introduction

The opening of your healthcare cover letter sets the stage for what's to follow. It should provide:

  • A concise summary of your professional and academic background.
  • A compelling reason as to why you're applying for this specific role.
  • If applicable, a mention of any mutual acquaintances or connections.

Here are two examples illustrating how this opening could look, based on your career stage:

Seasoned healthcare professional’s cover letter opening example

As an experienced Healthcare Administrator with over ten years in hospital management and a Master’s degree in Health Administration, I was thrilled to see the opportunity to apply for the Healthcare Administrator position at United Healthcare. I’ve admired United Healthcare’s commitment to quality patient care and efficient operation for many years and I believe my extensive experience in the field and proven ability to manage healthcare programs makes me a great fit for this role.

This introduction immediately presents the candidate's relevant experience, the level of education, and their specific interest in the company . There is a strong tie-in between their background and the role they're applying for.

Fresh graduate’s cover letter opening example

As a recent Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduate from XYZ University, I am excited to start my nursing journey in a challenging yet supportive environment, like ABC Healthcare. During my clinical placements, I concentrated on critical care, which I understand is a focus area at ABC Healthcare. I believe that my academic accomplishments and passion for patient-centered care align well with your advertised Registered Nurse position.

Despite not having professional work experience, this fresh graduate highlights their specialization and relates it directly to the responsibilities of the desired position. They've clearly explained why they are enthusiastic about this particular role and work setting.

Remember, your cover letter is your opportunity to generate interest and compel the hiring manager to delve deeper into your resume. Crafting a compelling introduction primes the reader to learn more about you and what you can bring to the healthcare team.

6. Highlight your healthcare skills and accomplishments

The body of your healthcare cover letter is where you make your case . It's here you showcase key skills, highlight significant achievements, and illustrate why you're an ideal fit for the role.

Here's a list of valuable skills of a healthcare professional

  • Patient care & empathy
  • Thorough clinical knowledge
  • Teamwork & communication
  • Detail-oriented & organizational skill
  • Problem solving & decision-making

Experienced professionals tip: Use concise and impactful anecdotes to demonstrate application of these skills.

Experienced healthcare professional’s accomplishments in a cover letter

In my role as a Registered Nurse at XYZ Hospital, I consistently maintained a patient satisfaction rate of over 95%. My deep clinical knowledge and exceptional problem-solving skills proved invaluable during a critical incident where I successfully identified a rare drug interaction missed by the team, preventing further complications.

Fresh graduates or less experienced candidates tip: Draw on experiences from internships, placements, or academic projects. Highlight your understanding of healthcare practices and your eagerness to learn.

Fresh graduate’s accomplishments in a cover letter

During my studies at XYZ University, I completed an eight-week placement in an acute care setting. I participated in patient care with a strong focus on empathy and communication. Additionally, I identified a discrepancy in the medication inventory during an academic project which instituted a review of the current system, demonstrating my problem-solving, decision-making, and keen attention to detail.

A well-crafted body of your cover letter, peppered with relevant skills and achievements, creates a compelling argument for your candidacy. Whether seasoned or just starting, remember to connect your past experiences directly to the job requirements and demonstrate how you're an ideal fit.

skills to include on a healthcare cover letter

7. End your healthcare cover letter persuasively

Wrapping up your healthcare cover letter is as essential as a well-rounded treatment plan in a medical scenario. It’s your final opportunity to leave a lasting impression , motivate the recruiter for the next interaction: an interview invitation.

This section should:

  • Extend gratitude to the recruiter for their time and consideration
  • Clearly state when you're available for further discussion
  • Indicate your preferred mode of communication
  • Mention that you will follow-up
  • Include a professional sign-off

Ineffective healthcare professional’s cover letter conclusion

Please refer to my attached resume. Thank you.

Why is this example wrong? This ineffective closing lacks finesse and important details. It doesn’t exhibit any enthusiasm or keenness for the role or hint at any further interactions. There’s also no indication of the candidate's availability for an interview or preferred mode of communication.

Effective healthcare professional’s cover letter conclusion

Thank you for your time and considering my application. I greatly appreciate your efforts to understand how my experience aligns with the values and needs at United Healthcare. I am excited about the possibility of contributing my skills to your team. My preferred contact method is email, but I’m also available on the phone. I can provide additional information and discuss my application in more detail between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday. I will follow up on my application a week from now if I don’t hear from you by then, but please feel free to contact me in the meantime at your convenience.

Why is this example correct? This robust cover letter conclusion not only expresses gratitude but also conveys the candidate’s enthusiasm about the role. It clearly spells out the best way and time to contact the applicant, and importantly, exhibits a clear call to action by stating their intention to follow-up. The concluding note is professional, reinforcing the seriousness of the candidate’s intent.

By ending your cover letter conclusively and well-rounded, you’ll reassure the reader about your interest in the role and encourage them to move your application forward.

8. Avoid common mistakes on a healthcare cover letter

It's crucial to ensure your cover letter is free of common mistakes. Just as in healthcare practice, a small error can have significant consequences .

Here are a few commonly committed mistakes and tips on how to avoid them:

1. Generic content

  • Mistake: "I am applying for the healthcare position at your health institution."
  • Fix: Always be specific in mentioning the role you're applying for and the name of the organization. This can demonstrate your attention to detail and seriousness in the application process.

2. Focusing on what the job can do for you, not what you can do for the job

  • Mistake: "I've always wanted to work in a hospital setting to develop my medical skills."
  • Fix: Highlight what you can bring to the table. Align your skills, experiences, and goals with the requirements and objectives of the company.

3. Lacking detail in your qualifications

  • Mistake: "I have healthcare experience."
  • Fix: Expand on your qualifications. Mention the relevant roles you've had, the responsibilities you've met, and the impact of your work.

4. Not checking for spelling and grammar errors

  • Mistake: Not proofreading the cover letter.
  • Fix: Just as meticulous charting is essential in healthcare, careful proofreading is a must for your cover letter. Use grammar and spell check tools, but also manually proofread your letter to catch errors these tools might miss.

5. Not following instructions

  • Mistake: Ignoring application instructions, such as not including requested information or failing to adhere to a specified format.
  • Fix: Follow the application instructions to the letter. This shows your ability to follow procedures — a key skill in healthcare.

Just like following a treatment protocol leads to better patient outcomes, avoiding these common mistakes can improve your chances of landing that healthcare job . Always remember, your cover letter is as much a demonstration of your attention to detail as it is of showcasing your suitability for the role.

9. Healthcare resources

Navigating the healthcare job market can seem like an intricate procedure. Luckily, there are numerous resources available that can aid your job search and supplement the information provided in this guide.

  • Job search websites: Many job boards specialize in healthcare job listings. Websites such as Health eCareers or MedZilla can help discover opportunities from entry-level positions to highly specialized roles.
  • Networking platforms: LinkedIn is a powerful platform to network, keep an eye on job openings, and engage with the greater healthcare community. Joining relevant LinkedIn Groups can provide valuable discussions, industry news, and job postings.
  • Career websites: Sites like Kickresume or The Muse provide career advice, resume writing tips, job search strategies, and insights about different paths in the healthcare profession.
  • Professional associations: Associations like the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Nurses Association (ANA), or the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association offer numerous resources ranging from networking events to job postings, professional development, certifications, and industry updates.
  • Online learning platforms: Sites like Coursera or Khan Academy offer a wide variety of health-related courses. Whether you are looking to refresh your medical knowledge, gain a new certification, or simply wish to learn more about a particular healthcare topic, these platforms can be a huge asset.
  • Healthcare consultants: For those seeking executive-level positions, using an executive search consultant familiar with the healthcare sector can make the job-hunting process smoother.

Remember, crafting an impressive healthcare cover letter is one step in your journey. Utilizing these resources can ensure that you're thoroughly prepared for each stage of the job hunting process, from initial search to final interview, enhancing your chances of landing your perfect role in healthcare.

10. Average salary and job outlook for healthcare professionals

According to the recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the landscape for healthcare professionals looks inarguably promising in terms of job growth and wages.

The overall employment in healthcare occupations is projected to grow at a much faster pace than the average for all occupations from 2022 to 2032.

It's estimated that on average, there will be approximately 1.8 million job openings each year in these occupations.

When it comes to wages, healthcare professionals indeed enjoy competitive pay. As per the BLS data from May 2022, the median annual wage for healthcare practitioners and technical occupations was $77,760 . This figure stands significantly higher compared to the median annual wage for all occupations, which was $46,310 during the same period.

On the other hand, healthcare support occupations, which encompass roles like home health aides, personal care aides, medical transcriptionists, and occupational therapy assistants , reported a median annual wage of $33,600 in May 2022. Although this is lower than the median wage for all occupations, career prospects and growth opportunities within these roles provide a robust platform for both personal and professional development.

With the healthcare industry showing such dynamic growth and excellent salary potential, it's certainly a worthwhile sector for professional investment. Crafting an effective healthcare cover letter, as guided in this article, is the first step towards seizing these rewarding career opportunities.

Healthcare Cover Letter FAQ

Beyond the specifics of the healthcare field, it's crucial to remember that the length of a cover letter should ideally be about one page. It should be brief yet comprehensive enough to highlight your skills, qualifications, and motivations.

In general, you should keep in mind the potential audience of your cover letter. It's likely that your cover letter will be initially screened by HR personnel who may not understand specific healthcare terminologies. Therefore, while some industry-specific language can showcase your understanding of the field, don't overload your cover letter with jargon.

Customizing your cover letter goes beyond just adding the recruiter's name and company details. Try researching about the healthcare organization’s culture, mission, and recent achievements, then express how you resonate with these aspects in your cover letter.

Absolutely. While expertise and technical skills are crucial in healthcare, soft skills such as empathy, communication, and problem-solving are equally important. Showcasing these traits can portray you as a well-rounded candidate and align with patient-centric healthcare environments.

While your resume will have detailed information about your licenses and certifications, in your healthcare cover letter, you can mention key ones that are particularly relevant to the job role you're applying for. Remember, your cover letter needs to complement your resume, not repeat it.

How to Write a Cover Letter for Medicine Work Experience

Not sure how to write a cover letter for Medicine-related worke experience? Read on to find out what our top tips are!

It can be quite daunting trying to get medical work experience . There will always be people who have a Doctor in the family who can let them tag along at a moment’s notice, but in reality, most people don’t have that option. Luckily, this doesn’t mean you can’t get work experience, it just means you have to be a bit savvier about it. I’m going to run through some of the things you can do to write a great cover letter to use when contacting people for work experience.

Written by Ruari McGowan

Consider Your Options

The first thing you’re going to want to do is prioritise. What is it that you would like to see during your work experience? This doesn’t mean you should pick one thing and focus on that alone, it means you should think of a variety of specialities or settings of Medicine, and consider what you would be most interested in.

One thing to keep in mind is that a lot of different things count as work experience – and some are easier to get than others. For example, volunteering in a care home or hospice counts as valuable experience and can be easier to get a hold of than two weeks in neurosurgery.

Different Medical Schools also provide guidelines of what they want to see in your work experience, which you can see on our Medical School Work Experience Requirements page .

Briefly Introduce Yourself

If you do want to try something more specific, this is where the cover letter comes in handy. This should never be longer than a single A4 page.

Start with a brief introduction about yourself and try to avoid clichés about how you have ‘ always dreamed of being a Doctor ’ – everyone appreciates originality.

You don’t have to divulge your life story, but it’s good to include just a little bit about where you are in life – for example, applying to Medicine, interested in Medicine as a career, etc.

Do Your Research

Next, a little bit of research can be useful. It’s good to personalise your letter a little to each Doctor you are going to contact. It can set you apart from the crowd if you research them and see if they have been involved in any research which you could express interest in, or if they have a subspecialty that they focus on.

You will be noticed if you put the effort in and more likely offered work experience if they think you will be genuinely interested in what it is they can show you. There is nothing worse than a student who is disinterested and doesn’t get anything out of the experience.

Use this research to write a section about why you are interested in what this Doctor in particular does and if you can’t find out specifics, write a little about why you think what they do as a GP or vascular surgeon or oncologist would be interesting to you.

Then Ask For Work Experience

Don’t ask for work experience straight away – do it after you have written the above and make sure you’re extremely polite, explaining what you might like to get out of the experience.

Never say you’re doing it because it’s a requirement for your application – express that you actively want to.

When starting and finishing your letter keep it formal: they don’t know you, so don’t use their first name as this can seem overly familiar. When signing off make sure to include contact details underneath to make it easy for them to get in touch.

What Should My Cover Letter Include?

To summarise, your cover letter should:

  • Start with a bit about who you are and why Medicine
  • Include a bit of research on their speciality
  • Be polite and respectful – don’t demand they let you shadow them!
  • Have an email address and contact number so you can be reached if they decide to offer you a placement!

Work experience isn’t the easiest to get and you may well receive quite a few rejections – but a good cover letter is key to standing out and increasing your chances of being offered a placement!

How to Secure a Hospice or Palliative Care Mental Health Internship, Practicum, or Clinical Supervision Placement with a Powerful Cover Letter or Cold Email Pitch

How to Secure a Hospice or Palliative Care Mental Health Internship, Practicum, or Clinical Supervision Placement with a Powerful Cover Letter or Cold Email Pitch

Landing a practicum, internship, or clinical supervision field placement in a  hospice or palliative care setting  is a rewarding opportunity for aspiring mental health and counseling professionals in fields such as professional counseling, clinical psychology, social work, addictions counseling, and marriage and family therapy (MFT). One of the first steps to landing an opportunity in this setting is crafting a cover letter or cold email pitch to get the attention of the hiring manager. To  stand out from the competition  and demonstrate your passion and qualifications for this specialized field, a  well-written cover letter or cold email pitch  is crucial. This step-by-step guide will help you create a unique and compelling cover letter or cold email pitch---essentially  your elevator pitch ---specifically for a hospice or palliative care setting.

Step 1: Understand the Difference Between Hospice and Palliative Care

Before writing your cover letter or cold email pitch, it is critical to understand the difference between a hospice facility and a palliative care facility, and to know which one you are applying to.

Palliative care focuses on treating patients who are living with a long-term and serious illness that may lead to an end-of-life situation in the future. Hospice, on the other hand, focuses on patients who have already been given an approximate end-of-life timeline. As such, hospice care supports patients as they transition through the process of death.

Step 2: Research and Understand the Hospice or Palliative Care Setting

Once you have determined whether the mental health and counseling internship, practicum, or clinical supervision placement site is a hospice or palliative care, it is then critical to research the organization to which you are applying. Understand the services they offer, their mission, and the unique challenges involved in providing mental health and counseling support in hospice or palliative care. This knowledge will help you design a personalized and resonant message.

One place to start is with  Mojozy . Mojozy provides mental health and counseling interns, practicum students, and clinical supervisees with access to field placement sites, many of which are in hospice and palliative care settings. Moreover, mental health trainees use Mojozy to filter their search by geographic region and other critical variables.

Find Mental Health Placement Sites

Step 3: Start with a Strong Introduction

Begin your cover letter or cold email pitch for the mental health hospice or palliative care internship, practicum, or clinical supervision field placement by addressing your recipient directly and briefly explaining the purpose of your communication.

Example:

"Dear [Recipient's Name],

I am writing to express my deep interest in the mental health practicum opportunity at [Hospice or Palliative Care Organization]. As a resolute and compassionate counseling student, I am drawn to the unique challenges and immense privilege of providing mental health support in hospice or palliative care settings."

Step 4: Highlight Relevant Experience and Skills

In the following paragraphs, display your  experience and skills  that align with the needs of a mental health practitioner in hospice or palliative care. Ensure that your internship, practicum, or clinical supervision placement cover letter or cold email pitch provides specific examples to demonstrate your qualifications and/or potential.

"During my clinical rotations at [Hospital/Counseling Center], I had the opportunity to collaborate with patients and families facing end-of-life challenges. I have been exposed to the complexities of grief, loss, and anticipatory mourning, and developed a deep understanding of the integrated approach required to support individuals in these circumstances. In one particular case, I provided counseling to a terminally ill patient and their family, aiding them in navigating their emotions, facilitating open communication, and developing coping strategies to enhance their quality of life during the challenging journey ahead."

Step 5: Ensure Cover Letter or Cold Email Pitch Expresses Empathy and Compassion

All mental health and counseling settings require the ability to demonstrate empathy and compassion, but hospice and palliative care settings are a notch above the rest. If you are applying to an internship, practicum, or clinical supervision opportunity in hospice or palliative care, then highlight your ability to provide empathetic and compassionate care by sharing personal anecdotes or examples from your previous experiences.

"I believe that offering unwavering support, empathy, and a safe space for individuals and their families is essential during their end-of-life journey."

Step 6:  State Career Goals and Align with Hospice or Palliative Care Organization's Mission

In this section of your cover letter or cold email pitch, express your career goals and explain how they align with the mission and values of the hospice or palliative care organization in which you would like to do your mental health internship, practicum, or clinical supervision placement. This would be the place to identify your mental health and counseling subfield---social work, clinical psychology, professional counseling, addictions counseling, or marriage and family therapy (MFT)—and how your area can uniquely contribute to the goals of the facility. This demonstrates your commitment to their cause and your understanding of their specific needs.

"I am dedicated to enhancing the emotional, psychological, and spiritual well-being of individuals who are facing life-limiting illnesses. By joining [Hospice or Palliative Care Organization], I aim to contribute to your mission of providing compassionate care and support to patients and their loved ones during this challenging time. It would be an honor to collaborate with your dedicated team and learn from their expertise."

Step 7: Emphasize Professional Growth and Learning

Mention your willingness to learn and grow within a hospice or palliative care setting while you are engaging in a mental health and counseling internship, practicum, or clinical supervision placement. Highlight your openness to receive mentoring and feedback, and your commitment to professional development.

"I am eager to gain further knowledge and skills in providing mental health support in hospice or palliative care. I am enthusiastic about receiving clinical supervision and engaging in ongoing training to enhance my understanding of the unique needs and therapeutic interventions required in this specialized setting."

Step 8: Wrap Up and Express Gratitude

End your cover letter or cold email pitch for the hospice or palliative care internship, practicum, or clinical supervision by expressing gratitude for the opportunity. Summarize your enthusiasm and reiterate your contact information.

Example:

"Thank you for considering my application for a mental health practicum in hospice or palliative care at [Hospice or Palliative Care Organization]. I am hopeful that I will have the opportunity to contribute to your mission and discuss how my qualifications align with your needs in more detail. Please find my attached resume, and I am available for an interview at your convenience. Thank you again for your time and consideration.

[Your Name]

Contact Information:

Phone: [Phone Number]

Email: [Email Address]"

Step 9:  Incorporate Keywords Relevant to Hospice or Palliative Care Settings

Ensure that your cold email pitch or cover letter incorporates keywords such as the below list. The purpose of this is so that your cover letter or cold email pitch can be found when searched in an organization’s database. A secondary reason is to show that you are familiar with some of the concepts relevant to hospice and palliative care settings. In other words, you would be speaking their language. This involves a delicate balance such that you do not overuse keywords. This is a clear example in which quality supersedes quantity.

Crafting a compelling cover letter or cold email pitch for a mental health practicum, internship, or clinical supervision field placement in a hospice or palliative care setting requires research, personalization, and the ability to showcase your unique qualifications and passion. By following this step-by-step guide and incorporating the provided examples and relevant keywords, you can create an application that stands out and highlights your ability to provide empathetic and effective mental health support in these specialized settings. Good luck in your application process.

How to write a cover letter.

How to Write a Cover Letter

In the previous section, Ch.2: Cover Letter Format , we covered how to professionally build your cover letter to meet the expectations of recruiters. Here, we'll discuss how to write your cover letter , section-by-section to create the best letter possible to land an interview.

The better your cover letter, the better your chance of securing an interview and leading to a potential position.

Knowing how to write a cover letter is key to coming off as a professional and landing the job interview you want. Since it's the first impression a prospective employer will have of you, make sure the document is clear and concise and conveys how you want to be received.

Typically, employers and hiring managers will read the cover letter before opening up the resume. This means that if your cover letter is deemed as unprofessional or doesn’t sell your skills for the open position, they might not even consider opening your resume and reviewing your professional experience.

Luckily, writing a cover letter has become very standardized, which means there aren't that many differences when it comes to format.

However, fitting your qualifications and achievements into three small paragraphs can be much more difficult than writing something long-winded - as you might be unsure of what to include and exclude.

While learning how to write a cover letter, be sure to keep in mind that you can only include so much, so only include the most important, most relevant factors to get your point across.

Part of the tricky thing writing a cover letter is that you need to know what to exclude, and what to include. Including too much information will feel like a tall task for the healthcare recruiting and hiring manager to sift through. Whereas including too little will make it seem as if you aren’t qualified for the position itself.

Writing a good cover letter is a balancing act, and we’ve got all the things you need to consider when crafting your cover letter.

How to Write a Cover Letter:

A strong cover letter is comprised of 3 components: the introduction salutation, the body paragraphs, and the conclusion, including salutation, signature, and other information.

How to write a cover letter 2

(The numbers in the document above match the sections below)

1. Introduction Salutation

Show them you did research and know whom you are talking to. If you can, used social media outlets like Facebook and LinkedIn to find out who'll be receiving your application and address it to them.

You'll catch their attention much more efficiently by stating their name, giving your application priority over others.

Including their name will also highlight that you have written a personal cover letter to them, and not just some generic one you send to every healthcare recruiter or hiring manager.

The more personal your cover letter feels to them, the more authentic you will come across in your desire to have a position with the company you are applying for.

2. Body Paragraphs

This is where you should let your uniqueness shine. Use the body section to show where you came from, what you've achieved, and what skills you have to meet their need.

Write about situations that are relevant to the job and highlight a skill they're looking for without restating the information on your resume.

Give them great examples and tell compelling stories, engaging their attention. Highlight your key accomplishments and show them how you can fulfill the job position. Give the employer something they want.

Remember, when writing these various sections - it’s important that you showcase value.

You want to showcase the value that you can provide the company and why you should be considered for the available position over other candidates.

Employers don’t want just want do’ers, they want achievers. So think about that when crafting each individual section.

First Paragraph

The first paragraph should remain relatively short and concise and use it to grab them with a strong introduction -- introduce yourself, and explain why you're contacting them. Include your name, the position you're applying for, and where or how you found out about the position.

If you know anybody that works at the company (or any person you can name drop) list them; tell how you know them or that they referred you. Referrals have much more impact on employers than blind-hires.

In addition, in the first paragraph you want to detail some of your general qualifications. Some of these general qualifications include: basic info about yourself, degrees obtained, area of study, area of expertise, and career goals.

After detailing some of the general qualifications above and providing a little bit of a background for yourself, you want to detail how those general qualifications and your background align with the goals of the company.

As we mentioned earlier, it is important to showcase how your background aligns more closely with the company goals, more-so than other applicants.

Second Paragraph

The second paragraph is where things can become more in depth since it's the heart of your letter. Use this section to show how you can meet the company’s need, as well as, show how you’ve addressed similar situations - using specific examples and prior experience.

Essentially, this paragraph is useful for talking about the job description. One thing you want to do before writing this section is to research the company.

It’s one thing to know what a company does and detailing how your goals align in the first paragraph - it’s another thing to detail how you are well versed in their industry and current and future trends.

Showcasing this knowledge is a great way of showing your passion for the industry itself. One of the common questions in an interview is how familiar you are with the industry itself.

Those applicants who showcase their experience in the industry can set themselves apart from those applicants who know nothing about the industry.

When an applicant is perceived as having little knowledge of an industry, companies worry that they might have to spend extra time and effort in getting the employee up to speed with current trends and future directions.

Another great tip to use in your second paragraph of your cover letter is to include specific keywords that were in the job posting itself.

In this way, if the company you are applying to requires a cover letter submission through an applicant tracking system that pulls keywords and information out of each document, you can have several keywords and keyword phrases that relate to the job posting itself.

Something every employer is happy to see, as it highlights the fact that you did your research on the position itself.

Highlight aspects of recent work that relate to the position you're applying to, and how you've gone above and beyond to accomplish goals relating to it.

You're allowed to use experience from education, work, or volunteer/charity as long as you don't simply repeat what's on your resume.

You can also use this section to elaborate on accomplishments that your resume might not speak about; use this paragraph to highlight your strengths and make a good impression to your employer.

Lastly, use this paragraph to help transition to the third paragraph, tying everything together.

Third Paragraph

Tie everything together and show/explain how you're the best candidate for the position with the third paragraph. Further tailor yourself to the position and summarize your accomplishments in a way that casts you as the candidate who will solve their problem. This is what the main objective of the third paragraph is; tell them how you can help.

You can elaborate on aspects of your qualifications that don't directly relate to your experiences as well, but would be beneficial to the employer.

Think outside the box here and be creative with the connections you make; everything in this paragraph should show them how you can solve their issues.

Another thing you wish to accomplish in this third paragraph is to create a call to action. You want to drive the individual reading your cover letter to invite you to an interview or the next step in the application process.

Lastly, tell the employer that you look forward to hearing from them and specify a date in which you intend to follow up on your application.

It is important that you tactfully ask for an interview in the closing; which, leads into the final section of the letter content.

In addition, you want to thank them for spending time and reading your cover letter.

3. Closing Salutation & Signature

Ask for the interview. There is one reason for writing a cover letter and resume, and that's to get an interview. Thank them for their consideration in advance, and let them know you would like a follow up and put a future meeting on the table.

Again, don’t drag it out; be clear and concise. Rewrite your phone number and give them an invitation to call you anytime to schedule an interview.

Cover Letter Tips - Dos:

Writing your cover letter with these three blocks will set the foundation for your document, but it is important that you follow a few rules to enable your cover letter to hit a homerun. Here are six things you need to consider while writing:

1. Know your audience

It is vital that you know who you will be writing to. Just like you resume, you want to draft your cover letter with a prospective employer in mind and write for them. Do research on the company you want to work for and determine the gatekeeper.

Write for the hiring personnel and focus on what their company needs. It doesn't matter what you want as a job seeker as much, as it’s what you can do for the company as a whole which will determine whether or not you get the position.

So, use your cover letter to demonstrate how you can help.

Researching your company is easy with today’s technology; Google and LinkedIn are powerful tools for researching anything you need regarding the job market.

You can find the company's website and specific individuals who work there, and it is good to research both the company and specific people, as mentioned previously.

You can use the company’s website to find the name of the person you want to write to; the website will give you the name, exact title, and what they need/do for the company.

If you can’t find what you need on the company’s webpage, you can search Google for online directories — sometimes just typing in the name of the company can pull up documents and archives on your prospective employer.

In addition, these google searches might even provide additional contact details such as different emails that might be in use, or other important individuals you might want to CC (carbon copy) in your email.

As much of the hiring process is determined by several individuals, it would be a good idea to make sure that the content over your cover letter is accurate for the person who would be making the hiring decision or reviewing the applications as they get submitted.

Be friendly, professional, and enthusiastic about the field you are applying to. Nobody wants a robot that churns out blanket statements and boring sentences.

Healthcare recruiters and hiring managers can tell right off the bat whether or not your cover letter is a generic one that you send to every position you apply for, or if you have hand crafted it for the individual position.

Your tone can indicate whether or not it is a generic cover letter, or if you have specifically crafted it for the respective position.

One way to showcase that you have specifically crafted the cover letter for the respective position is to show the company that you want to work in that specific field, that you’re good at your job, and that you love doing what you do.

Be engaging. Ask questions your prospective employer might ask themselves, and answer them with examples of how you tackled obstacles and accomplished similar tasks that align themselves with what the company needs.

3. Be Compelling

Don't be boring. Most people remain too stuffy in their letters and use the same cliche statements; "I'm responding to...; I can do...".

Instead, tell about interesting adventures that demonstrate skills you can bring to the table; talk of your travels and combine that with lessons you learned that also apply to the position.

You want to separate yourself from the other candidates who will be using these generic statements. One great way is to tell a story.

Tell a story to demonstrate your skills instead of just saying you have the skills. It is more interesting and memorable to tell about the time your skills were put to the test and how you rose to the occasion.

One of the common questions in an interview is to talk about when you have used specific skills related to the position.

So if you do decide to use a story about using your skills in your cover letter, remember to bring it up in the interview once again.

This way, you can remind healthcare recruiters and hiring managers about your unique cover letter if they happen to forget it by the time the interview rolls around.

4. Be Concrete

One thing you want to make sure that you do is to avoid the abstract. Give specific accounts and tell about actual stories that tie in with concrete skills and accomplishments that are relevant to what the company needs for the job.

One additional thing you should avoid doing is use flowery language. As we mentioned earlier, you want to make sure that you avoid including flowery language that would make your cover letter longer than it needs to be.

Avoid flowery language and provide very specific examples on why you are great candidate and can help the company be great.

5. Be Concise

Employers go through roughly 200 cover letters per position, so to have the best chance of staying out of the trash, keep it short and sweet. Avoid being redundant in your cover letter; It is important to be direct and cut to the chase.

Don’t drag the cover letter out and don’t add too much irrelevant personal information. The whole document should stick to the three blocks and be about three paragraphs—try to stay at one page, three-quarters if possible.

Only include the information that is relevant to the position in your cover letter.

6. Sell Yourself

A well written cover letter enables you to make a great first impression and is meant to highlight your strengths and to sell yourself to your prospective employer.

Don’t sound too haughty, but it’s okay to brag on yourself a little—as long as you have concrete instances to demonstrate your skills.

Highlight your successes and reinforce your resume; don’t repeat it, but back it up with examples of why you are the best at what you do.

It really elaborates upon the achievements in your resume, or add some depth that your resume can't convey.

Among all things, be sure to use strong verbs and strong examples-- remember, be compelling.

Knowing what to avoid can be as important as knowing what to include, and try to avoid mistakes that can potentially land your document in the trash can.

Cover Letter Tips - Don'ts:

Now that we’ve covered all of the things you should include in your cover letter, here are a few things you should avoid including.

As mentioned previously, you want to ensure that you only include all the necessary details, so avoid including the following things.

1. Don’t Be Dull

The first thing you want to avoid doing, is appearing to be dull. In essence, you don’t want to be dull. Spice it up a little.

Many professionals will tell you that you want to be as plain jane as possible, but you also have to remember that hiring managers and healthcare recruiters read hundreds of cover letters for a vacant position.

This means that after a while, every single cover letter starts to blur together. You don’t want to just be another cover letter in the stack, you want to stand out a bit.

You want to stand out in the best way possible, which is to make the healthcare recruiter or hiring manager feel like they have to get in touch with you to learn more about you and see how your skills would be a good fit for the position.

Don’t write like a robot - show some personality. Try to compel them and sell yourself in your cover letter.

You want to be careful to avoid making it seem as if you are over-selling yourself or boasting about your experience.

Doing so will make it seem as if you are boasting about your skills to hide your inexperience in other areas, or that you will be difficult to work with due to your boastful personality.

Essentially, there is a delicate balance you need to find in how much you sell yourself in your cover letter.

In the same essence, you don’t want to undersell yourself, because then you might come off as unqualified.

Lastly, tell them what a great company they are, and demonstrate how you can contribute to that greatness through the use of your skill set and experience.

2. Don’t Talk About Salary

One of the questions that is frequently asked on applications is what your expected or desired salary would be the for the available position.

Because of the fact that this question is one of the mandatory questions, many choose to include it on their cover letter to showcase that they reviewed the application and put it on there for additional consideration.

Even though many people choose to put it on the cover letter, it is not recommended.

Just don't do it. One of the problems that come with putting your desired salary or salary range on your cover letter is that it creates the illusion that the only thing you care about is the money.

You don't want want the main reason you want the job to be about money, and It’s not important at this juncture and any talk of it can hinder negotiation tactics.

If you place your desired salary range too high or too low, you can automatically disqualify yourself from future consideration.

If you place your desired salary range too high, then your cover letter will automatically disqualify you from companies who cannot afford to pay someone that much money - or require that they work their way up to that pay grade.

If you place your desired salary too low, then it makes it appear as if you are desperate or that you are unqualified for the position.

On the rare occasion that your desired salary is in the range that the employer is willing to pay, then you have negotiated against yourself by letting them know the range you would settle at.

You want to avoid negotiating against yourself, as you want to showcase that your skill set and experience would make you a better fit than the other applications the employer is reviewing.

Wait until you get an offer to negotiate salary — unless they bring it up beforehand.

3. To Whom It May Concern

"To whom it may concern" is both old and outdated, and it shows that you did no research in discovering who you will be talking to or who handles new hires.

Take the time to find out who you are writing to. Hiring managers and healthcare recruiters will be more impressed if you call them by name in your letter — everyone loves hearing their name. It makes them feel important.

In addition, it creates a more personal approach that you are writing about your desire to have the job to a singular person, instead of using “to whom it may concern”, which could be read by anybody.

Use psychology to give you leverage of situations like this. It is important to show that you did research, and calling them by name, makes it personal.

If you can't find out who will be receiving your submission, omit the line altogether. It's redundant and wastes space that can be used on an example or your skills or experience to strengthen your application.

4. Don't Write Blanket Cover Letters

Tailor each cover letter for a specific job, so you can highlight specific skills that can fill the need of each job. Using the same cover letter for a retail job and a nursing position, will not help you in the long-run.

Many professionals will use the same cover letter for every single job, and you can separate yourself as a more desired candidate if you tailor your cover letter for each position.

Employers, hiring managers, and healthcare recruiters want to see individuals who put more effort into each cover letter, because it showcases your work ethic and desire to work for that company.

Each position is unique and so should each cover letter. Even though your stories might be the same, you can emphasize different points of them to highlight individual skills.

However, if you need to save time, you can create cover letters for categories of positions.

For example, create one cover letter for nursing and one for physician's assistant, and then change small amounts of information depending on the job you're applying to.

This approach makes your job search much more efficient and saves a lot of time in the long run and will cut down some time if you don’t wish to fill out a cover letter each time for a new position.

5. Don't Use "I" Too Much

In your cover letter, you want to avoid using “I” too often. Using “I” gets redundant, and sounds like you have no other words in your vocabulary.

While your cover letter should be about you, you don't have to keep reiterating that. We already know it's about you, so try and come up with different subjects for your main sentences.

Try making some of the subjects about the prospective company, past companies, past experiences, and accomplishments.

If you keep saying "I" it will make your cover letter dull and uninteresting - something we’ve already covered earlier in our cover letter requirements that you want to avoid.

6. Don't Over Do It

Be clear and concise; say what you need to and wrap it up. Remember that a cover letter is a document that, coupled with your resume, demonstrates your skills and highlights stories that reinforce why you are the perfect fit for the position.

Sell yourself and demonstrate how you can meet the company’s needs. Spice up your writing and engage their attention, and show them you know how to write a cover letter.

Be confident in your writing. You are the best fit, so demonstrate that to your prospective employer.

7. Avoid Spelling and Grammar Mistakes

One thing that you need to make sure you do before submitting your cover letter is to avoid spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. There are plenty of available resources to use that can make checking for errors even simpler.

In addition, you can always ask a friend or coworker to review your cover letter to ensure that there are no mistakes that you should fix.

It’s always a good idea to have someone else review it to determine whether or not you are coming across how you’d like, and that your experience and skills translate well throughout the document.

One of the things that will instantly disqualify you from further consideration is having spelling or grammar mistakes in your cover letter.

When you have spelling or grammar mistakes in your cover letter, it comes across to potential employers and healthcare recruiters that you didn’t bother to spend the extra few seconds making sure there are no errors.

Which begs the question, will you take that same approach in your professional career?

Avoid presenting this image to someone who is going to determine the future you might have with that company, and spend the few seconds to review your cover letter before officially submitting it.

8. Avoid Rambling

You should avoid rambling in your cover letter. A cover letter is similar to a resume in that you want to convey what you can do for a company in a succinct manner.

As mentioned previously, healthcare recruiters and hiring managers review hundreds of cover letters for a vacant position, so you want to ensure that you provide them with all the information they need quickly.

If a cover letter is too long, they won’t even review it after the first paragraph. So if you are saving all the juicy details in your cover letter after the first paragraph and your cover letter is too long, then they won’t even consider reading very far.

To avoid this, just make sure that all the detail you are providing is absolutely critical in the cover letter, and it follows the three paragraph outline we have specified above and in Ch. 2: Cover Letter Format , as well.

9. Avoid Too Much Personal Information

One additional thing you need to avoid doing when crafting and writing your cover letter is to avoid using too much personal information.

Healthcare recruiters and hiring managers do not need to know about your personal details unless it specifically relates to your ability to do the position itself.

In many cases, you can avoid mentioning personal information at all, unless it is brought up in the interview. And only certain things can be brought up in an interview due to regulations and employee employer relations.

Typically, those questions only relate to whether or not there are any restrictions that might prevent you from completing the job as assigned.

So to avoid oversharing any information, just list the critical information that you need to provide on your cover letter, and keep the details on your cover letter related to your skills and previous professional experience as it relates to the available position.

10. Don't Rehash Your Resume

One thing you want to ensure that you do is to avoid rehashing all the data on your resume. Your cover letter allows you to expand upon your resume due to the fact that the information isn’t all just bulleted information.

Even though your cover letter allows you to expand upon your resume, you should avoid rehashing it.

When professionals rehash their resume, it begs the question as to why someone should review the resume if you mention everything that is on it.

Your cover letter should be useful for expanding upon how you used those skills or specific examples of accomplishments you listed on your resume.

For additional information, you can say that you would be happy to expand upon the details more in an interview.

Using this useful technique is a great way of once again declaring that you would like to move forward in the candidate application and selection process.

11. Avoid Highlighting Unnecessary Skills For The Job

Similar to avoiding the use of personal information, you also want to avoid highlighting skills that would be unnecessary for the job.

For those professionals who typically use the same cover letter for every application that they submit — this is one of the main problems associated with their cover letters.

Due to the fact that these cover letters are used for a wide array of positions, many people will list skills that can be used in every position, and not skills for individual positions.

When crafting your cover letter, you should ensure that you write it so that each of the listed skills is useful for that specific job.

When you place the skills that you possess on each individual cover letter, you are separating yourself from those candidates who will list skills that don’t relate to the position itself.

Your cover letter should consist of an introduction salutation, three body paragraphs, and your conclusion salutation. For formatting the dates and contact information, check out Ch. 2 Cover Letter Format .

To write a great letter, find out who your audience is and tell them, through examples, why you're the best candidate for the position.

Keep things streamlined, concise, and easy to interpret so that the reader can quickly draw information from it.

Clutter may cause your application to be dismissed. Remember, they have a problem and are looking to solve it. Be the solution and you'll have no problem scoring an interview.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

When crafting your hospitalist cover letter, it's important to avoid these common mistakes:

Being Too Generic : One of the biggest mistakes you can make is sending a generic cover letter that doesn't address the specific needs of the hospital or healthcare system you're applying to. Take the time to research the organization and tailor your letter to highlight how your skills and experience align with their mission and values.

Failing to Highlight Relevant Medical Experience : Hospitalist positions require a strong background in medicine and patient care. Don't forget to emphasize your relevant medical experience in your cover letter. Highlight any specialized training, certifications, or clinical rotations that make you a strong candidate for the role.

Neglecting to Address the Specific Needs of the Hospital or Healthcare System : Every hospital or healthcare system has unique challenges and priorities. Show that you've done your homework by addressing the specific needs of the organization in your cover letter. Discuss how your skills and experience can contribute to solving their challenges or meeting their goals.

Not Demonstrating Effective Communication Skills : As a hospitalist, effective communication is crucial. Your cover letter is an opportunity to showcase your written communication skills. Make sure your letter is well-written, free from grammatical errors, and demonstrates your ability to clearly articulate your ideas and experiences.

Focusing Too Much on Personal Achievements : While it's important to highlight your achievements and qualifications, be mindful not to focus solely on yourself. Hospitalist positions are inherently team-oriented, so it's important to convey your ability to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals. Discuss your experience working within interdisciplinary teams and your commitment to providing patient-centered care.

Neglecting to Mention Continuing Education and Professional Development : The field of medicine is constantly evolving, and hospitalists are expected to stay up-to-date with the latest research and advancements in their specialty. Mention any continuing education courses, conferences, or professional development activities you've participated in to demonstrate your commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth.

Failing to Proofread and Edit : Attention to detail is essential in the medical field, and this extends to your cover letter. Take the time to proofread and edit your letter to ensure it is error-free and presents a professional image. Typos or grammatical errors can give the impression that you lack attention to detail, which is not a quality hospitals are looking for in their physicians.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can create a compelling hospitalist cover letter that stands out to hiring managers and increases your chances of landing an interview.

In conclusion, a well-crafted cover letter plays a crucial role in a hospitalist's successful job application. The example cover letters here should give you a good general idea on how your Placement cover letter should be formatted and written.

The rest of this guide gives more specific guidance on how to create your own cover letter in this format, and even includes some templates you can copy and paste.

How to write a Placement cover letter

A simple step-by-step guide to writing your very own winning cover letter.

How to write a cover letter

Write your cover letter in the body of an email/message

You should write your cover letter in the body of the email (or messaging system if sending via a job board) and never attach it as a document.

The reason for this?

You want your cover letter to start connecting with the recruiter from the moment they open your application.

If they have to open a document to read it, it will slow things down and they may not even bother to open it.

Write cover letter in body of email

Start with a friendly greeting

Cover letter address

To kick your cover letter off, start with a friendly greeting to build rapport with the recruiter instantly.

Your greeting should be personable but professional. Not too casual, but not too formal either

Go with something like…

  • Hi [insert recruiter name]
  • Hi [insert department/team name]

Avoid old-fashioned greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very formal companies.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.

  • Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

Once you’ve opened up the cover letter with a warm greeting to start building a relationship, it is time to identify which role you want to apply for.

Recruiters are often managing multiple vacancies, so you need to ensure you apply to the correct one.

Be very specific and use a reference number if you can find one.

  • I am interested in applying for the position of *Placement position* with your company.
  • I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 406f57393)
  • I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
  • I saw your advert for a junior project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Highlight your suitability

The sole objective of your cover letter is to motivate recruiters into to opening your CV. And you achieve this by quickly explaining your suitability to the roles you are applying for.

Take a look at the job descriptions you are applying to, and make note of the most important skills and qualifications being asked for.

Then, when crafting your cover letter, make your suitability the central focus.

Explain why you are the best qualified candidate, and why you are so well suited to carry out the job.

This will give recruiters all the encouragement they need to open your CV and consider you for the job.

Cover letter tips

Keep it short and sharp

It is best to keep your cover letter brief if you want to ensure you hold the attention of busy recruiters and hiring managers. A lengthy cover letter will probably not get read in full, so keep yours to around 3-6 sentences and save the real detail for your CV.

Remember the purpose of your cover letter is to quickly get recruiters to notice you and encourage them to open your CV, so it only needs to include the highlights of your experience.

Sign off professionally

To round of your cover letter, add a professional signature to the bottom, giving recruiters your vital contact information.

This not only gives various means of contacting you, it also looks really professional and shows that you know how to communicate in the workplace.

Include the following points;

  • A friendly sign off – e.g. “Warm regards”
  • Your full name
  • Phone number (one you can answer quickly)
  • Email address
  • Profession title
  • Professional social network – e.g. LinkedIn

Here is an example signature;

Warm regards,

Gerald Baker Senior Accountant 07887500404 [email protected] LinkedIn

Quick tip : To save yourself from having to write your signature every time you send a job application email, you can save it within your email drafts, or on a separate document that you could copy in.

Writing a Placement & Work Experience Cover Letter

Alt Text!

When you apply for a placement, you’ll need to send a cover letter along with your CV. A placement cover letter supports your application by explaining who you are and why you’re interested in the role.

The aim of your cover letter is to persuade an employer to read your CV, (over the fifty others they received), and eventually invite you for an interview.

Want to write the perfect one? Read on for the how…

  • What goes into a work experience cover letter?

How to write a cover letter for a placement

Placement cover letter example.

  • Things to remember

What goes into a work experience cover letter

Although you should always tailor your cover letter for each job you apply for, there are a couple of things that all cover letters must include.

On top of the usual letter niceties, these are…

  • Your name and contact details
  • The role you’re applying for
  • Why you’re interested in the role
  • Your skills and previous experience
  • What you’ll bring to the company
  • Your career goals

Step 1: Dear Sir / Madam?

The first three words of your cover letter are crucial. Make no mistake!

Recruiters and employers get itchy eyes when they read a work placement cover letter addressed to [Dear Sir/Madam]. And they really lose their minds when they see [To whom it may concern]. It’s best to address your letter to the reader directly. So…

Dear Full Name , e.g. Dear David Attenborough – this is ideal as it’s gender-inclusive and doesn’t rely on the use of ‘Mr’ or ‘Ms’

Dear Mr Surname , e.g. Dear Mr Attenborough

Dear Ms Surname , e.g. Dear Ms Attenborough – never presume marital status. Write Ms instead of Miss / Mrs.

Don’t know who to address your cover letter to? There’s a few things you can do.

1. Browse LinkedIn – Lots of companies have a profile that lists their employees

2. Contact the employer – Ask for the name of the person who is tasked with reading placement cover letters. You can do this by phone or email

3. Address your cover letter to the department manager

4. If you can’t locate the person who handles recruitment, address your placement cover letter to someone who works in HR .

hospital placement cover letter

Step 2:  Swift intro

Next, you need to disclose what placement you’re applying for.

A company might be hiring placement students in a number of different departments. Be specific to make sure you’re being considered for the right role.

Write something like this –

“ I am writing regarding the vacancy for the marketing placement with IBM, as advertised on RateMyPlacement. Please find my attached CV. “

Let the recruiter know where you found the vacancy for the placement. Employers are always keen to know what channels students use to find jobs. It makes a good impression.

Step 3:  Why are you interested?

Now you’ve introduced yourself, it’s time to explain why you’re interested in the chosen placement or work experience scheme.

It’s important to do some research about the company you’re applying to and the content of the programme. Use it to give convincing reasons for your interest in the placement.

Step 4: What can YOU bring?

In this section, you want to explain what you’ll bring to the company as a placement student. There’s no need to mention everything.

Be specific and keep it relevant to the role. What unique skills will you bring to the organisation?

It’s also a chance to talk a little bit about your hobbies and interests – keeping them relevant to the role you’ve applied to.

“ I am halfway through a Marketing degree, and on course to achieve a 2:1. So far, I have focussed on digital marketing modules, which have imparted strong analytical and problem-solving skills. I am also now proficient in basic coding. My three years at Mecca Bingo have provided experience with customer service practices and other useful soft skills. “

hospital placement cover letter

Step 5: Final flourish

Aptly named the final flourish, you will end your placement cover letter in this section. Thank the recruiter for considering your application, and register your interest in attending an interview.

“Thank you for considering my application, I’m looking forward to the prospect of discussing the placement in greater detail in an interview. “

Step 6: Farewell

If you found the name of the recruiter/employer, end your placement cover letter with ‘Yours Sincerely’. If you rebelled and wrote “to whom it may concern”, put ‘ Yours Faithfully’.

Here is an example of a placement cover letter. This is the structure and general length you should be aiming for (approx 250 words) …

Dear Mr Attenborough,

I am writing regarding the vacancy for the marketing placement with IBM, as advertised on RateMyPlacement. Please find my attached CV.

I am particularly interested in this placement at IBM because of the focus on different areas of digital marketing. IBM is at the forefront of the digital marketing industry, and I am fascinated by the cloud-based software IBM provides for companies on email, web and social media.

I have been reading about IBM’s most recent project, which aimed to improve customer experience across the buyer journey. It links closely to a project I completed in the first year of my Marketing degree, which centred around optimising the user experience for online retail.

I am halfway through a Marketing degree, and on course to achieve a 2:1. So far, I have focussed on digital marketing modules, which have imparted strong analytical and problem-solving skills. I am also now proficient in basic coding. My three years at Mecca Bingo have provided experience with customer service practices and other useful soft skills.

Thank you for considering my application, I’m looking forward to the prospect of discussing the placement in greater detail in an interview.

Yours Sincerely,

Kevin McCloud.

1 . If you’re applying for a placement online, you’ll need to write your cover letter in a text box. Write it in Microsoft Word or Pages first, then copy and paste it into the text box. That way you can check your grammar and spelling beforehand.

2. If you’re sending your cover letter via email or attaching it to an online application, save it as a .pdf rather than a Word/Pages file. All computers can read PDFs, so there’ll be no problem when an employer opens the file.

3 . Always save your cover letter as ‘[Your Name] Cover Letter ‘. It looks clean, and employers will be able to find you easier.

How to write a successful pharmacy cover letter

Writing a cover letter that helps you stand out from other applicants can be challenging. Pharmacy career consultant Amy Zydzienowski, from Vertica Career Consultants, explains how it is done.

Do I really need to write a cover letter? In my role as a pharmacy recruiter and career coach, I am often asked whether a cover letter is a necessary accompaniment to a CV as part of a job application. Some people believe that cover letters just repeat information from their CVs — others are concerned that recruiters never even read them. However, if you can write a cover letter that explains why you are the right candidate for the job you want, you can ensure that your application stands out for the right reasons.

Cover letters — what’s the point?

Traditionally, you would send a CV and cover letter by post in response to a job application or as a speculative approach. Your cover letter would introduce you in a professional sense, explain why you were applying for the position and provide some evidence of your competency for the role.

Nowadays, applications are less frequently sent by post — they are usually emailed or completed online. Despite this, presenting a professional cover letter is still part of the established protocol. If you are responding to a job advertisement in today’s competitive pharmacy jobs market, it is likely you will be one of many applicants (sometimes one of hundreds). Therefore, you need to do everything you can to ensure your application stands out, which includes an excellent cover letter.

Consider the hiring manager’s point of view

Before you start writing your CV and cover letter, you need to ask yourself: “What would the hiring manager want to see in the application?”

One way to find out is to simply call and ask the hiring manager or recruiter exactly what they would like to see. A recent survey of US employers by Saddleback College in America has shown that they can have differing views on whether a cover letter is important, how long it should be and what information it should contain. By asking the employer directly, you can find out their specific views and tailor your cover letter accordingly.

Laying out your letter

There are no set rules for your cover letter, but a good structure is important. The cover letter is telling a story about you and, like all good stories, it should have a beginning, middle and end.

The beginning

If the application is being posted then use a standard letter format, with your own address and date on the right and the organisation’s contact name and address on the left. For email applications, put your cover letter in the main body of the email and add your CV as an attachment. Your cover letter can be ignored more easily if you attach it as a separate document.

You should always try to address your cover letter to a specific person when possible. This will be easier if you have already called the hiring manager. Research by Forum3 (now called Charity People), a not-for-profit recruitment company for the third sector, suggests you are 10–15% more likely to receive a reply if you address your application to a person and 5% more likely to get an interview [1] . If you do not know the name of the person, then use a professional address such as “Dear Sir or Madam”.

Immediately after addressing the reader, you should state the purpose of the application, so that the reader can quickly understand the reason for the email. For example, “Reference: Application for Band 6 hospital pharmacist role”. This could also be included as the subject line of the email.

The first paragraph should describe what your current professional situation is and why you are applying for the position. This paragraph should also include any research you have done into the role or organisation, including anyone you have spoken to, any site visits you have undertaken and the name of anyone who may have referred you. If you have taken the time to research the organisation and the role, this could be a key differentiator for your application. However, you should avoid making generic statements, such as “I want to join your esteemed company”. Make sure anything you say about an organisation is relevant to them and based on the research you have undertaken.

Your cover letter should demonstrate to the reader that you have the key skills and experience relevant to the particular role. You can do this by providing specific examples, tailored to the requirements listed in the job description, of when you have demonstrated these from your own experience to date. Choose three or four of these relevant examples that each tell a story about your skills, experience or traits and provided a positive outcome for the stakeholders involved in the situation.

These examples could come from any part of your life, as long as they are relevant. Newly qualified pharmacists will likely use examples from their pharmacy placements, academia, part-time work and also extra-curricular activities, in order to demonstrate a range of skills. A more experienced pharmacist candidate would generally choose examples from their work history because it is the most relevant. However, sometimes it is appropriate to bring in other examples, such as voluntary work.

Always try to use an active voice when explaining your achievements, because this serves to make the reader feel that you were in control in these situations. Additionally, try to avoid making vague or generic statements that could apply to any applicant.

If an achievement is strong enough to be included in your cover letter, it should be repeated on your CV. Try not to repeat examples word-for-word on both documents — instead, try to interpret them differently. Sometimes, due to time constraints, the hiring manager may bypass your cover letter and go straight to your CV, which could mean they miss your best examples. In addition, repetition will serve to reinforce these key messages like a sales brochure would, which is, in essence, what your CV and cover letter are.

In your final paragraph, thank the reader for taking the time to read your application and summarise why you feel you are a good fit for the role, based on your skills and experience. State how and when you can be contacted with regards to arranging an interview and then make sure you are available when you say you will be.

Sign off the letter professionally with “Yours sincerely” (to a specific person) or “Yours faithfully” (to an unnamed person), followed by your name.

Formatting your letter

In terms of format, a cover letter is usually written as a traditional letter, laid out in paragraphs. It is different to your CV, which is an abbreviated document that uses various techniques to draw the eye to the most important parts quickly and make the document as succinct as possible. In your cover letter, keep your language concise and purposeful. To achieve this, you may need to redraft your letter several times.

The grammar, spelling and formatting of your cover letter is just as important as the content of the document, so make sure it is perfect. Particularly, ensure you have spelt names and company names correctly and there are no typing errors. Research from student recruitment website StudentGems.com suggests half of employers discard job applications that contain spelling or formatting errors.

Choose a standard, well known and professional font, such as Arial, Verdana, Calibri, Times New Roman or Trebuchet. This will make the letter easier to read and will also support applicant tracking systems that may not be able to pick up lesser-known fonts. Keep your font size between 10 and 12 for ease of reading.

Through my own experience of recruiting pharmacists, I have observed that the standard of today’s pharmacy job applications is generally quite poor. If you spend time putting together a strong application, which includes an excellent cover letter, then it will stand out to an employer and increase your chances of securing the role.
