The town has spiritual significance as the abode of the virgin Goddess Kanya Kumari, who is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati, the divine Mother Goddess. Kanyakumari is the place where the goddess is believed to have done penance in order to get Lord Shiva to marry her, which means the town is a popular destination for pilgrims and devotees. People come from all over to bathe in the holy saltwater and make an offering at the temple, but there are many more things to do when visiting Kanyakumari. Feel the Rush of Water at Courtallam Falls

If you want to get out of the city, a trip to the roaring waters of Courtallam Falls is a great way to do just that. It takes about three hours to drive the 76 miles (123 kilometers) to the natural park, but once you get there, you'll find nine beautiful waterfalls that have been featured as a backdrop in many classic and contemporary Bollywood films. It was also a subject that the poet Thirukudarasappa Kavirayar sang about in his work, "Kutraala Kuravanji." In the summer, you may be able to witness Saral Vizha, an eight-day festival where people come to bathe in the falls, whose water is said to contain therapeutic properties. The nearest town is Tenkasi, which also has a train station if you prefer to travel by rail.

Visit Vivekananda Rock Memorial

Revered Indian poet and Hindu philosopher Swami Vivekananda visited Kanyakumari in 1892, towards the end of an extensive trip across India as a wandering monk. His transformation into an influential leader and reformer is attributed to the three days he spent meditating on a large offshore rock, where Goddess Kanya Kumari is said to have carried out part of her penance by standing on one foot. According to ancient Hindu texts, the Puranas , the rock was blessed by the touch of her foot.

A memorial was built on the rock in 1970 to honor Swami Vivekananda. It consists of a pavilion with a life-size bronze statue of Swami, a hall with information about his life, and a meditation area. There's also a carving of the Goddess' foot on the rock.

Visit the Thiruvalluvar Statue

A towering statue of the great Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar stands on a smaller neighboring rock, just off the coast of Kanyakumari. The foundation stone was laid in 1979 and the work was completed 20 years later, in 1999. Ferries to Vivekananda Rock Memorial stop at the Thiruvalluvar statue afterward if the tide permits. It's possible to go inside the base of the statue and climb the stairs up to its feet for a superb view, as long as it's not closed for periodic maintenance.

The town's 3,000-year-old Kumari Amman Temple (also known as Arulmigu Bhagavathy Amman Temple) is dedicated to Goddess Kanya Kumari, who is worshiped as a great protector after destroying the mighty demon king Banasura. This important temple sits by the sea near Triveni Sangam and has a beautiful black stone idol of the goddess. The standout feature is her sparkling bejeweled nose ring. Non-Hindus are allowed to enter the temple, but photography is prohibited. If visiting in October, try to visit during the Navratri Festival .

Mahatma Gandhi visited Kanyakumari a couple of times, and some of his ashes were scattered into the sea there on February 12, 1948. A memorial was later constructed at the location where the ashes were kept for public viewing, near Kumari Amman Temple. Its architecture resembles that of temples in Odisha and the design is quite exceptional. Every year at noon on October 2, Mahatma Gandhi's birthday, the sun's rays fall through a hole in the temple's roof and onto the place where the ashes sat in an urn.

Drive Through One of the World's Largest Wind Farms

If you're interested in renewable energy, you can combine a trip to the Thovalai flower market with a drive through Muppandal Wind Farm by continuing about 15 minutes further along National Highway 944. Notably, it's one of the largest onshore wind farms in the world and India's biggest source of wind energy.

Its motley assembly of more than 3,000 turbines stretches for miles, curiously intermingled with palm trees and banana plants. The farm produces 1,500 megawatts of power in total; to put that into perspective, a single 2-megawatt wind turbine can power 400 houses. The fact that the turbines are sponsored and commissioned by private companies accounts for the lack of uniformity in their design.

Thanumalayan Temple Sthanumalayan Kovil

Thanumalayan or Sthanumalayan is a Hindu temple dedicated to the three Gods Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. The temple is one of the prominent religious places to see in Kanyakumari. Bhagavathy amman temple.

Bhagavathy Amman Temple is a 3000 years old temple dedicated to the Goddess Kanyakumari Amman. The temple is significant in hosting the ancient scriptures of the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata and the religious Vedas. It is considered as one of the auspicious places to visit in Kanyakumari. The idol of the Goddess inside the temple is remarkable. She holds a rosary in her hand and wears gold jewellery in her nostrils which radiates at the spark of light.  As per Hindu mythology, Lord Parasuraman is believed to have blessed the temple as sacred or holy. Thirukkural, ‘The Sacred Couplets’, has three sub-sections, which are the Books of Aram, Porul, and Inbam. V. Ganapati Sthapati is credited to be the architect of the statue, and it was unveiled on January 1, 2000.

2. Vivekananda Rock Memorial

It is situated on one of the two adjacent rocks protruding out of the Lakshadweep Sea and constitutes the ‘Shripada Mandapam’ and the ‘Vivekananda Mandapam’. This statue depicts spectacular architecture and was built in the year 1970 and has been a major tourist attraction ever since. The island on which the statue is located is said to have been the site where Vivekananda attained enlightenment. The Shripada Mandapam has a study hall and a museum, where you can explore Vivekananda’s life and work in depth. This Mandapam adds to the spiritual significance and of the memorial along with emphasizing its purity. It is the perfect spot to meditate and introspect. With its serene surroundings and majestic construction, the Vivekananda Memorial is an unforgettable experience.

According to historical tales and legends, it is believed that Goddess Kumari performed austerity on this rock. There is a ‘Dhyana Mandapam’ located beside the memorial, which serves as the meditation hall for the visitors who want to meditate. The style of architecture followed here is distinctive and incorporates various temple styles from all over India. These rocks are surrounded by the Laccadive Sea. 

Swami Vivekanand was a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, the founder of Ramakrishna Mission and this construction was dedicated to him. Built between the years 1963 and 1970 and adorned in red and blue granite, it is situated on the top of a rock island, at a height of about 17 meters above sea level, covering a total area of approximately 6 acres. 

Shripada Mandapam has a square floor plan and it includes Garbha Graham (Sanctum Sanctorum), Inner Prakaram, Outer Prakaram, and an Outer Platform. The Outer Platform surrounds the Shripada Mandapam. Vivekananda Mandapam and Shripada Mandapam are designed in such a way that the vision of Swamiji’s statue in Pralima Mandapam is directed towards the Shripadam.

3. Padmanabhapuram Palace

Padmanabhapuram Palace is believed to have been built in the 16-century and houses many unique antiques and artifacts. Reflecting on the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the country, it is a must-visit place to see in Kanyakumari. This was the capital city of the erstwhile Travancore Empire and has been a bonafide symbol of strength to the region’s history. What is worth noting about this palace is the fact that Padmanabhapuram Palace is made entirely from wood and no other material. Decked up with exceptional wooden carvings and designs, the simplicity of the palace is what makes it a truly charming destination.

The Padmanabhapuram Palace is segregated into several divisions, each of which has a significance of its own. Many unique articles such as old Chinese jars, a variety of weapons, stone sculptures, furniture, large mirrors, paintings, brass lamps, wood, a wooden cot, and a polished stone cot are housed in the Padmanabhapuram Palace for safekeeping. Kerala Government is responsible for maintaining this enchanting palace and Padmanabhapuram Palace draws hundreds of visitors daily. It is often touted as one of the best 10 palaces in the world.

You might have heard about this being the abode of the Travancore rulers, as it was the Venad ruler, Iravi Varma Kulasekhara Perumal who gave Thucklay this palace dipped in Kerala style of architecture around 1601 AD. Later around 1750 not only did Padmanabhapuram Palace get a facelift but also its name which was given by King Marthanda Varma who ruled the kingdom by the name Padmanabha Dasa, slave of Lord Padmanabha and devoted the whole kingdom to the family deity Sree Padmanabha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The floral carvings, black granite floor, pictures of Krishna, murals from 17-century and 18-century, mahogany musical bow, windows of coloured mica are some of the fascinating items on display here. Also, take a look at the medicinal bed present in the King’s room, secret underground passages, and the brass-made hanging lanterns which are lit to date.

Padmanabhapuram Palace holds the honorary mention of being among the top ten palaces in the world. The Rajas of Travancore ruled the city of Travancore from this fort till 1790. Later the capital was changed from Padmanabhapuram to Thiruvananthapuram.

Padmanabhapuram Palace has a vast spread over a sprawling 6 acres and is situated at the foot of Veli Hills of  Western Ghats . This palace was constructed by Iravipillai Iravivarma Kulasekhara Perumal in the 17-century. This palace is mostly a wooden structure that exhibits the traditional architectural style that Kerala boasts. The walls of the palace have wooden planks, which have carvings of Anantasayana, which depicts Lord Vishnu in a reclined pose on the serpent lord, Ananta. The floor of the palace is made of burnt coconut shells, laterite, lime, and sand.

The interiors of the Prayer Hall are designed with 50 murals that depict Lord Vishnu with his consorts and Lord Krishna and his gopikas. Several paintings depicting important episodes from the life of Marthanda Verma can be seen on the walls of the corridor leading to the guest house.

4. Kanyakumari Beach

Situated at the confluence of the three oceans namely, the Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal, and the Arabian Sea this picturesque beach features amongst the most prominent places to see in Kanyakumari. Moreover, the temple that stands now in Suchindram was built in the 17-century and sees worshippers bowing down to praise Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and Lord Brahma who are also a part of the temple’s name where “Stanu” refers to Lord Shiva; “Mal” to Lord Vishnu; and the “Ayan” means Lord Brahma. This unique temple is the only temple in the world where the holy trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva is enshrined at the same place as a single deity (called Sthanumalayan). One can also see a towering 22-feet Hanuman statue that is one of the highest in the country. Beautiful gopurams, exquisite carvings, musical pillars, and a powerful spiritual aura are some of the vital features to be observed here. The 18-feet high musical pillars carved out of single granite stone are a massive attraction. There is a strict dress code for men and women and one needs to be wary of the so-called guides and pandas who are on the lookout to extract money from tourists.

It is dedicated to Thiruvalluvar, a prominent Tamil poet and philosopher. The 133-foot-tall statue stands proudly on a 38-foot-tall pedestal and can be seen from afar. The pedestal’s height represents the 38 chapters of virtue in his literary masterpiece Tirukkual, while the statue’s height signifies the 133 chapters in the same book. The museum houses many figures of famous national and international personalities from different walks of life, like Sir Abdul Kalam, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Charlie Chaplin and Michael Jackson. 6. Bharat Mata Temple

Although the bridge was originally built across the Pahrali River for easy passage of irrigation water, it soon became a major tourist attraction. 11. Thanumalayan Temple

There are about 30 shrines in the temple, including a 22-foot-tall statue of Lord Anjaneya and a massive idol of Nandi. From astounding architecture and four musical pillars to beautiful gopurams and exquisite carvings, everything about the temple is amazing. Travelers may encounter a tourist tax or fee depending on their destination.

That additional travel cost could come up if a person visits one of the slew of places around the world that have such charges. Factors that spurred the taxes can vary, ranging from climate change to overtourism, according to reports.

Five locales with tourist taxes or fees include:

Venice, Italy

The roughly $5.35 daily tourist access fee for Venice, home to the Rialto Bridge, Doge’s Palace and St. Mark’s Basilica, launched as a pilot on Thursday after it received the go-ahead from city officials in mid-September. It targets day-trippers coming into the city between 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is required on specific dates in April, May, June and July during the test period.

International tourists can face an "International Tourist Tax" while exiting Japan, per the Japanese National Tax Agency . It amounts to about $6.30 per departure and must be paid by those taking planes or boats to do so.

Barcelona, Spain

While the city’s nightly tax for travelers staying at tourist accommodations has existed for quite some time, it went up at the beginning of the month, becoming about $3.47. It is capped at seven nights. Catalonia, the region where Barcelona is located, also has a graduated tourist tax that’s size is determined by one’s accommodation, according to The Points Guy.

Bhutan, nestled in the Himalayas in Asia, asks most tourists to hand over nightly Sustainable Development Fees of $100 for adults and $50 for ages 6-12. It charges a differently-priced fee from those coming from India. The money goes toward "various projects that create long-term, sustainable opportunities for the Bhutanese people," the country’s department of tourism website said. 

New Zealand

New Zealand’s tourist tax, called the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, costs $35. Tourists encounter it during the visa application process. The country requires it for "most people entering New Zealand on a temporary basis" such as vacation and certain student and short-term work visas, according to the government. 

Tourism a boon for economy

Travel and tourism provides major benefits to local economies and the global economy alike.

Countries around the world will see travel and tourism produce $11.1 trillion in 2024, according to a report recently released by the World Travel & Tourism Council.

Part of that will include spending by international travelers. They will reportedly contribute $1.89 trillion, according to the WTTC.

This Ski Resort Town Was Just Named the Most Expensive Vacation Destination in the U.S.

The average cost of a one-week vacation in the U.S. for just one person hit nearly $2,000 in 2023, up by more than $400 over the previous year, according to a study by Bankrate . And this is just for a basic trip. But if you're hoping to go to places like New York City , you're going to spend a pretty penny, as it was just named the eighth most expensive destination in America. 

The travel experts at OptimosTravel recently analyzed more than 100 vacation spots in the United States, assessing each on the price of a daily meal, public transit, accommodation rates, and attraction fees, all in an effort to uncover the 10 most expensive vacation destinations in the nation. After crunching the numbers, it found that Aspen, Colorado, is the most expensive of all. 

"Aspen, Colorado, tops the list as the most expensive vacation spot, with a total daily cost of $761.39 per person, leading to a whopping $5,329.72 for a 7-day trip per person," the team noted in its findings, which it shared with Travel + Leisure.

The research crew noted that gourmet meals can cost upward of $100.5 per day, while "opulent accommodations" cost $494.56 per night. "Aspen's breathtaking scenery comes with a premium price tag," it added, "and for a family of four, the skies are the limit at $13,691. Even with modest transportation costs at $7, the city's unmatched offerings ensure its status as the epitome of luxury travel." 

Joining Aspen at the top of the most expensive list is Park City, Utah, in second, where travelers can expect to pay $93.75 for daily meals and $471 per night for lodging. "A week's stay costs $4,971 for one and $12,632 for a family of four," the team shared.

Maui, Hawaii, wasn't far behind in third, with a daily cost of $682. "It boasts the highest meals ($112.50) and lodging ($534.11) among top destinations, but affordable attractions ($26.63) balance the cost. A week costs $4,762 solo or $10,782 for families." 

These spots were followed by Montauk, New York, in fourth, with a daily cost of $613.77; Santa Monica, California, in fifth with a daily cost of $592.05; Key West, Florida in sixth, with a daily cost of $537; Charleston in seventh with a daily cost of $535.68; and New York City in eighth with a daily cost of $511.34.

Rounding out the top 10 is Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts in ninth with a daily cost of $496.65, and one more ski town, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in 10th, with a daily cost of $490 per day. Pay to enter: Venice becomes the first city to implement a tourist ticket system

Venice became the first city in the world on Thursday to introduce a payment system for visitors in an experiment aimed at dissuading tourists from arriving during peak periods.

However, it isn't the only place in Italy that has recently introduced new measures aimed at slowing tourist flows.

Here are some of the initiatives currently in force.

Venice tourist tax

The lagoon city has introduced 5 euros (about $5.35) tickets for day trippers, valid from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The experiment came into force on April 25, a national holiday in Italy. Tickets will be needed for the following 10 days and thereafter for most weekends until mid-July.

Venice residents, students, workers, and homeowners are exempt from paying or booking a slot. Visitors aged under 14 and tourists with hotel reservations will need to register, but access for them will be free of charge.

Other cities, such as Como, have said they are considering introducing a similar measure but are waiting to see how the Venice initiative works before deciding.

In addition, Venice has said that from June, it will limit the size of tourist groups to 25 people and ban the use of loudspeakers by tour guides.

Florence tourist measure

Florence announced in October that it was banning new short-term residential lets on platforms such as Airbnb in its historic center. It also offered three years of tax breaks to landlords of short-term holiday lets who start offering ordinary leases for residents.

The city's famous museum, the Uffizi, offers discounts to people who arrive before 8.55 a.m. and lower prices off-season. To spread out crowds, it also closes at 10 p.m. once a week.

Cinque Terrer overtourism

The five villages that make up the Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera regularly get swamped with visitors.

To try to reduce the overcrowding at peak periods, the authority which oversees the area said this week it would charge visitors 15 euros (about $16) to walk the most celebrated coastal path. In addition, the path can only be walked in one direction.

Capri tourism measure

The picturesque small island that lies across the bay from the southern city of Naples has doubled its entry fee, which is automatically added to ferry tickets, to 5 euros. The fee will be charged from April 1 to October 1.

Capri, Ischia, Procida, Lampedusa and Linosa changes

These islands have introduced limits, or outright bans, on cars for non-residents during the main tourist season.

Trump’s trial is the latest chapter in the rich history of Lower Manhattan’s courts.

A cluster of downtown buildings has served as the borough’s “epicenter of criminal justice in New York since the 1830s,” said a lawyer who has led walking tours of Manhattan courthouses.

For a decade, Robert Pigott, a lawyer, has led walking tours of the courthouses of Manhattan, guiding visitors around landmarks where the city’s rich legal history has played out. Now the trial of Donald J. Trump has added a chapter to the story he gets to tell.

Mr. Pigott’s tours, which he runs in his spare time, revolve around a cluster of downtown buildings that are the borough’s judicial hub. For now, 100 Centre Street — the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse, where the former president’s case is being heard — is the focus.

But just down the street on Foley Square sits Manhattan’s most elegant courthouse building, New York’s Supreme Court, with its sweeping flight of 32 stone steps leading up to a series of imposing Corinthian columns. Other court buildings are dotted around nearby.

“The eyes of the nation and the world are trained on criminal court cases in New York County, whether it’s organized crime, Wall Street cases or federal cases,” Mr. Pigott said.

Mr. Trump’s trial is remarkable because it is the first time that a former American president has been criminally prosecuted. The defendant’s status as this year’s presumptive Republican presidential nominee adds a contemporary political dimension.

For Mr. Pigott, 64, who has written a book about the history of the city’s courthouses, the real significance is what it says about the status of a few blocks of Manhattan as a nexus. He pointed out that Mr. Trump’s civil fraud case and defamation case also both played out this year in courthouses within spitting distance of the criminal trial.

“Now, when I arrive at the expanse of Foley Square midway through the walk, I can point to something truly remarkable — three different courthouses where the same former U.S. president has been on trial,” he said.

Mr. Trump’s trial shows how politics, celebrity and the location of the court itself can reinforce one another to make a big story bigger. New York’s status as a media hub increases the spotlight during high-profile cases and the high-profile cases held over the decades have, in turn, made the city’s courts an attractive setting for fictional courtroom dramas.

In these buildings, a jury convicted Anna Sorokin for grand larceny in 2019 for posing as a German heiress to swindle wealthy New Yorkers — a case that almost by definition blurred fact and fiction. Naturally, the tale has since been turned into a series on Netflix.

The cluster is also where a group of Black and Latino teenagers, then known as the Central Park Five, were wrongly convicted in 1990 of raping a jogger — a case also rendered as a Netflix series — and where Mark David Chapman pleaded guilty in 1981 to murdering the musician John Lennon.

The New York Supreme Court building, a trial-level court, often serves as a symbol of the court complex. It featured prominently in the television show “Law and Order" and the 1957 courtroom film classic “12 Angry Men,” to cite just two examples.

Mr. Pigott, however, is drawn to the history of the legal system before the 20th century and how it evolved through its buildings. The first stop on the tours he runs is a sidewalk nearby with glass blocks embedded in it, through which it is possible to see the excavations of a courthouse built by the Dutch in the colonial era.

The authorities in New York built a judicial infrastructure in this part of Lower Manhattan starting mainly in the 19th century, when the area experienced significant gang violence, he said.

“This one-block radius has been the epicenter of criminal justice in New York since the 1830s,” said Mr. Pigott.

For all the drama associated with the Trump trial, the streets outside the criminal courthouse have generally been calm this week. Reporters and members of the public have lined up for entry to the courthouse. And on Thursday morning, Collect Pond Park across the street, which has been designated for protests, was empty. Its only occupants were some police officers and a few pigeons.
