Just like a parent isn’t supposed to have a favorite child, we try to avoid saying one area is completely superior to another in Florida, but southwest Florida is so darn happening that it’s hard not to!

Whether it’s Disneyland in Miami, gorgeous gardens and everglades in Naples, or magical antique mansions turned museums in Sarasota, a lot of the best things to do in Florida are already in the southwest area of the state.

It can be a little overwhelming when planning a trip, so we packed together all of our favorite stuff in one place to try and make it a little easier!

Visit Sanibel and Captiva

Are you looking for a gorgeous beach that is absolutely lousy with shells, or are just a sea shell enthusiast in general?

Then Sanibel and Captiva is one of the best places in Southwest Florida for you!

The area is comprised of two medium sized keys, respectively named Sanibel and Captiva, and it is a shell lover’s absolute paradise, making it one of the best places to visit in southwest Florida!

Edison and Ford Winter Estates

Do you love the old money mansions that have been turned into museums? We sure do! If you’re like us, then one of the best things to do in southwest Florida for you!

The estates were both built near the end of the 19th century by the two innovators, Ford and Edison!

Edison found the affordable property in Fort Myers perfect for a relaxation haven away from his regular life, and then a few years later he convinced his friend Ford to follow in his footsteps.

Since both of these men were quite wealthy, you can see what the elite of the time liked in their living spaces in terms of decorations and aesthetics.

Through the generosity of Edison’s widow and some hand changing on the real estate market done by Ford’s property, both houses are now open to the public!

The estates’ property is on 20 acres of gorgeous land that’s packed with gardens, Edison’s botanical research laboratory, a museum, and of course the actual Edison and Ford residences.

Whether you’re coming for the history, the gardens, or the vintage aesthetic, there is no shortage of things to appreciate about this very special destination which is why it’s one of the best places to go in southwest Florida!

Visit Everglades National Park

If you’re wondering if that’s really right, nowhere else on earth? Seriously, the everglades are a unique gem in the crown of this beautiful planet! Make sure to put this on your list when doing a Florida Keys Road Trip!

Visit the Ringling Museum

Continuing on in the vein of gorgeous old mansions with epic history that have been repurposed as museums for us the public to enjoy, we present: The Ringling!

If you’ve ever been to a circus in North America back when they were a huge sensation, there is an overwhelming likelihood that it was part of the absolutely massive circus conglomerate created by Mr. Ringling!

Originally starting from less than ideal means, Mr. John Ringling eventually created an empire in a field of business that he perfected and industrialized like no one before him: the traveling circus!

Even though he created a massive fortune over the years, it disappeared in what seemed like a blink of the eye. Mr. Ringling’s life and stability were plagued with euphoric highs and tragic lows.

We won’t spoil too much of the story for you other than promising that it has a happy ending!

Today the grounds of Mr Ringling’s estate have been transformed into a beautiful experience for the public to enjoy.

The grounds include a massive art museum, a circus museum, a perfectly preserved antique mansion with steps into the the literal ocean, and a stunning giant walking garden.

Spending a day at this historic site is one of the best things to do in southwest Florida!

If you’re lucky to be there while the rose garden is in bloom, the perfume of the flowers mixes with the peppers that are grown elsewhere in the garden creating a beautifully sweet and spicy aroma to enjoy while exploring the grounds!

Do you absolutely love the everglades but want something that is a little more expansive and open-world feeling?

10,000 islands State Park is going to be right up you alley, it is an absolutely massive state park that as, as the name suggests, a staggering amount of small islands!

The mangroves create a beautiful maze to explore, but even the website itself says it can be a bit confusing so make sure you have a compass, a map, and ideally a guide who knows the are.

Naples Botanical Garden

If after being in the unique swampy paradise that is the everglades you’re looking for a more manicured nature experience, then this is one of the best attractions in southwest Florida for you!

When we say this is the disneyland of botanical gardens, we aren’t joking! The botanical gardens occupy a staggering 170 acres, and has been honored with some of the most prestigious awards that a garden can earn! Don’t forget to check out the best things to do in Naples while you are here!

Ground was first broken in 1993 and due to the garden’s non-profit status and robust donor base, it has flourished since! The botanical gardens see upwards of 220,000 people a year, which is no doubt because it is one of the best things to do in southwest Florida!

Look for Manatees

These gentle cows of the sea are a beauty to behold, and if you’ve ever seen one in person it’s easy to understand how these critters were once believed to be mermaids!

Find the Dome Houses

This unique landmark was once supposed to be an opulent beach home for a member of the upper crust – however today all that remains is the signature domed ceilings of the now eroded foundations.

The eroded home now is a lovely place for the local flora and fauna to take over, and it’s also one of the benefits of seeing it in person!

Myakka River State Park

Are you looking for a gorgeous nature experience that is super close to what the conquistadors and indigenous people of the US would have seen back in the old days?

Myakka River State Park one of the best places to go in Southwest Florida, it’s also one of the oldest and biggest state parks in the entire state of Florida!

There is ample exploring to do just about anyway that you can think of, there are almost 40 miles of hiking trails and 14 miles of bike trails!

19 Awesome Things to do in Southwest Florida (Fort Myers, Naples & Sanibel Island)

Despite being born in Miami, I never had the chance to explore the Gulf of Mexico side of my state much, so it was an easy ‘yes’ when I was recently presented the opportunity to experience all the best things to do in Southwest Florida—specifically the areas of Fort Myers , Sanibel Island and Naples .

Thousands of people flock to the picture-perfect white-sand beaches of Florida’s Southwest coast each winter to escape the cold and now I totally understand why. The weather is perfect this time of year—sunny in the 60s and 70s, without the oppressive sweat-inducing humidity that summer brings.

Plus, there’s a more chilled-out, nature-centric vibe to this side of Florida that’s an ideal antidote to the fast-paced party life that’s become synonymous with Miami culture.

What’s even more exciting for my fellow Californians is that Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) recently announced new non-stop flight options from LAX and SFO, and it’s now easier than ever to do a quick getaway to the Southwest Coast of Florida.

If you’re looking to plan your own escape that includes beautiful beaches, stunning coastal scenery and unique wildlife tucked between the mangrove forests, Southwest Florida is your spot. The Best Things to do in Southwest Florida

From food and culture to making the most of the state’s natural surroundings, there’s quite a variety of things to do in Southwest Florida. Below, I’m breaking it down between Naples and Sanibel Island where we focused most of our time during this trip.

Things to do in Naples

Naples, Florida has long been known for attracting an older crowd of snowbirds who flock to the area for sunshine and golf post-retirement. But I have to say that since I was last in Naples, the scene has been looking a lot younger and there’s plenty to do for those of all ages.

We had a ton of fun here doing everything from an electric moped tour, sunset sessions at the beach to enjoying the local brewery scene.

Book a Naples Princess Dinner Cruise

For a relaxing and fun night out on the water, a ride aboard the Naples Princess is where you’ll get a different perspective of Naples from the vantage points of Naples Bay, Port Royal and the Gulf of Mexico. Naples has some of the most high-end real estate in the country and the best way to get a closer peek into the homes of the uber-rich is via boat.

The Naples Princess has multiple options for cruises, including lunchtime cruises, sightseeing cruises and sunset excursions as well. We booked the dinner cruise, which served a surf and turf style dinner of steak and shrimp as we made our way through Naples’ calm waters past some of the area’s most expensive real estate out to the Gulf coast.

Stay at the Inn on Fifth

Located in the heart of downtown Naples on 5th ave, the newly renovated Inn on Fifth is a must-stay if you’re seeking the luxurious side of Southwest Florida. While the rooms are beautiful and we had an epic balcony overlooking 5th Ave, I have to say that what impressed me most was the quality of service.

From the moment we stepped on the property, the hospitality here was some of the best I’ve experienced staying at a hotel anywhere in the world—and you better believe I’ve stayed at my fair share of hotels. We were also in walking distance to most of the activities we wanted to do in Naples which was super convenient.

Pro tip: If you want the ultimate experience, make sure to book a Club Level Suite which comes with its own exclusive amenities including a private rooftop jacuzzi, evening hors d’oeuvres and a self service bar.

See the Sites of Naples via Electric Moped

Out of all the things we did in Naples, this one was definitely the most fun! I was a little skeptical at first because I’m not even that confident on a regular bike. However, these electric mopeds were way easier to learn to ride than I expected and once we got the hang of things we were speeding all over town.

Our guide from Trike Tours USA led us via e-moped to some of the most popular spots around town like the Naples Pier, Port Royal (one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in America) and down several of the most popular shopping strips. Pack comfy close-toed shoes because you’re not going to want to miss this one, promise!

Visit Tin City

To snag more of your quirky, classic Florida souvenirs and giftables, a stroll through local shopping spot Tin City is the place to go. Plus, it’s located right on the waterfront and has a totally different vibe than most of the luxury shopping that you’ll find on 5th Ave. The building is fun, colorful and rustic—definitely a quaint pit stop during your visit and fun for photos as well.

If you’re in the mood for more high-end shopping instead, pop over to Mercado, Third Street South, Waterside Shops or 5th Avenue South.

Enjoy a Night of Fine Dining at Sails Restaurant

One of the better restaurants I’ve eaten at in a while, Sails was definitely pricey but worth every penny in my opinion. No need to picture some stuffy, fine dining eatery though—here there’s a fun social vibe, featuring live music and great people watching.

We opted to sit at the bar and ordered a selection of dishes to share (the tagliatelle and tomato salad were my favorites), and then finished off dinner with a divine soufflé that can’t be missed. If you want to eat here, definitely make a reservation ahead of time.

Have Lunch on the Sand at the Turtle Club

For an awesome daytime dining option, head straight to the Turtle Club in the Vanderbilt Beach Resort, where you can enjoy al fresco dining literally with your toes in the sand. Afternoon or sunset would be the best times to go here, but be prepared to wait a bit for a table. If you come here with some friends for a mid-day hang, the ambiance is perfect and you can walk in, however reservations are recommended for the evening tables.

Check out the Naples Brewery Scene

The craft beer scene is relatively new in Naples, but that seems to be changing with more breweries popping up locally over the last five years. I love trying out new craft brews when I travel, so we decided to check out one spot while we were in town called Riptide Brewing , which was started by three friends originally brewing beer out of an old office warehouse in Naples. The current location has a great little back patio for some mid-day relaxation.

If you’re keen on more of a brewery tour of Naples, some other spots worth checking out are Bone Hook Brewing , Momentum Brewhouse and the Naples Beach Brewery , which is the only microbrewery in Naples.

Visit the Naples Botanical Garden

Strolling through the Naples Botanical Garden was one of my favorite activities we experienced while in Naples. It’s not too far outside of downtown, but feels like it’s own peaceful oasis, situated on over 170 acres of land. I recommend grabbing a morning coffee at Fogg Cafe inside the garden and strolling through as soon as it opens to avoid the crowds. Don’t miss the Brazilian gardens and any special exhibits on display.

Catch Sunset at the Naples Pier

You can’t go to Naples without a visit to the Naples Pier, period. Whether at sunrise, sunset or on a mid-day stroll, this 1,000 ft pier is a hotspot for surfers, local fisherman and tourists alike. However touristy it may be, it’s that way for a reason.

Sunrises here are calming, with locals coming to stroll the beach as the perfect reset for a new day. During golden hours, larger crowds flock to the silky white sand beach here for an idyllic setting to catch a perfect Naples sunset. If you’re lucky, you might even catch the elusive Green Flash!

Lunch at Celebration Park

If you’re looking to mix it up from the restaurant scene, head to Celebration Park, an area of Naples perched on the waterfront that’s become a go-to for food truck dining with a sports bar attached. Make sure to keep updated with their calendar of events as they regularly host fun theme nights, charity events and holiday gatherings.

Things to do in Sanibel Island and Captiva Island

Sanibel Island is one of those places that feels a bit cut off from the rest of the world—and in the best way possible. There’s not even a main downtown here…just 12 miles of beaches, loads of bike trails and a much slower pace of life. It’s a little stuck in time, but that’s all part of the charm and repeat visitors here wouldn’t have it any other way.

Sanibel is the kind of place where you want to head to bed early each evening so you don’t miss a single gorgeous sunrise. And if you plan it right, you can literally witness it each morning from the sand just steps away from your hotel bed. Sounds idyllic, right?

Experiencing island life here is one of the best things to do in Southwest Florida and luckily Sanibel is just a short drive from Fort Myers. If you’re looking for a true reset from the rest of the world, this little island should definitely be on your Florida bucket list.

Check in to the Island Inn

There are tons of accommodation options on Sanibel Island, from hotels and small inns to condo rentals, but Island Inn has been consistently ranked #1 on Sanibel & Captiva islands and is the oldest hotel on Sanibel since 1895.

Staying here is true island living. We booked one of the beachfront cottages that literally opened out to the sand and it took us just seconds each morning to step out from our patio to take in the beautiful beachfront sunrise. I also have to give major props to their on-site restaurant Traditions on the Beach which was one of the best meals we had on the island.

Take a Day Cruise out to Cayo Costa State Park

If Sanibel Island is known for anything, it’s the abundance of beautiful seashells that cover the beaches here. If you’re on the hunt for some epic shells to bring home as mementos from your trip, make sure to head out to Cayo Costa State Park for a day.

You can book a half day or full day excursion with Captiva Cruises who share history and fun facts about the area as you head out on the water towards Cayo Costa. Once docked, you’ll basically feel like you’ve been dropped on a deserted island where seashells abound. We even found a handful of perfect sand dollars here. This is definitely one of the best things to do in Southwest Florida.

Try the Area’s Famous Keylime Pie

Did you know that key lime pie is the official pie of the state of Florida? If you dine out anywhere here, especially in Southwest Florida, you’ll pick up on this quickly—it’s practically on every menu! Sanibel and Captiva Islands of course are no exception.

While I didn’t have a chance to try every key lime pie on the island, we did enjoy a very, very good one at Keylime Bistro (I mean, key lime is in the name, so it’s gotta be good right)?! This spot is conveniently located across the street from the Captiva Cruises dock, so we went straight here after departing from our Cayo Costa cruise excursion.

If you’re truly on the hunt for the best of the best, some other key lime pies of note according to the internet can be found at Cip’s, The Sanibel Grill, Paper Fig and Grandma Dot’s.

Take Advantage of 25 Miles of Bike Trails

As someone who has a mild fear of biking, I greatly appreciated Sanibel’s commitment to being bike friendly. The island has been designated a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists and has over 25 miles of bike trails.

We rented our bikes at our hotel, Island Inn, and then set off for three hours, biking all the way out to the Lighthouse park and back, getting a great intro to the island (and workout!) in the process.

Breakfast at the Island Cow

If you’re looking for a hearty meal with a plethora of options for everyone in your travel party, look no further. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more extensive menu in my entire life. Think heavy hitters like coconut french toast and hash brown benedict for breakfast to everything from seafood to sliders for dinner.

We came here for breakfast, but I feel like this would be a really fun spot for daytime drinks or later dinner as well, as they feature live music and have outdoor games on offer.

Watch Sunset at Sanibel Lighthouse Beach Park

For sunset on Sanibel, head to the Lighthouse Beach Park on the southern tip of the island, where you can enjoy a long stretch of sand with the backdrop of the island’s historic lighthouse built in 1884. If the conditions are right, you might also get a show of kite surfers to boot. It costs $5/hour to park here, or you can bike like we did and park for free.

Book Dinner Reservations at the Mad Hatter

Probably one of the top two meals we had during our entire Southwest Florida trip was at the Mad Hatter. This fine dining restaurant has incredible service and a fun Alice in Wonderland theme (but don’t worry, it’s not overkill). Every single thing we ate here was delicious, from the goat cheese pillows and roasted garlic plate appetizer to the scallops.

Kayak Through the Mangroves in J.N. “Ding” Darling

This national wildlife refuge is home to a massive undeveloped mangrove ecosystem that a wide variety of birds and wildlife call home. To experience the refuge in the most peaceful way possible, renting kayaks or taking a kayak tour is ideal.

We opted for a kayak trail tour with Tarpon Bay Explorers who offer a wide selection of guided nature tours in the area. Our guide was super knowledgeable, but I did feel like the tour was a bit overpacked and we couldn’t hear everything the guide was sharing. If you book with them you might want to inquire about the least busy days/times to see if you can get into a smaller group. Otherwise, I’d rent private kayaks to head through the trail at your own pace.

The Seashell Museum

As far as museums go, I have to say, this one was really cool. I spent many days in my childhood admiring beautiful seashells without giving much thought to how they were formed, where they came from, and the abundance of variety in them. Shells are literally nature’s artwork and this museum proves it!

The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum allows you to get up close and personal with some live sea life (they have a designated touching station), and includes some really fascinating information about mollusks and their homes. This is a great activity to bring kids to as well, but every adult would enjoy this just as much.

Personally speaking, I’m always excited when I get a chance to visit this part of Florida because it feels like a home away from home. There’s something so peaceful and relaxing about Southwest Florida. So come escape reality as I walk through some of the best things to do in Southwest Florida. Trying to figure out what to do can be quite a challenge when there are so many different experiences offered or places to go in Southwest Florida, but I have you covered. Here are 16 of the best things to do in Southwest Florida for your next visit! 

You can’t visit Southwest Florida without stopping by its stunning beaches. These white sandy beaches offer options for relaxing but also for many other fun activities. Anything from playing a game of v olleyball to exploring the tide pools packed with crabs, starfish, and shells. 

Some areas within Southwest Florida even feature quartz sand, which makes the beach sparkle (and helps keep the sand cool, even on those hotter Florida days!). We’re looking at you Anna Maria Island !  Of course, many people also flock to the beaches here to enjoy the magical crystal-clear waters . A few of the best beaches include Tiger Tail Beach, Bunche Beach Preserv e, Lido Beach, and Brohard Beach Paw Park (a dog-friendly beach). 

If you love shelling , plan a visit to Sanibel Island , a barrier island found off of Fort Myers. Sanibel Island is considered one of the best shelling spots in the US, according to Travel & Leisure. 

Over the years, shelling at Sanibel Island has become an incredibly popular pastime for island visitors. It’s so popular, in fact, that there is even a nickname for your posture while shell hunting (aka the “ Sanibel Stoop “). 

And while you’re exploring Sanibel, don’t forget to add nearby Captiva Island to your bucket list, another spot known for its shells as well as its beautiful beaches. Check out Turner Beach , which is known as one of the best beaches in the area for shelling but also just to visit and enjoy a quieter beach.

No trip to Southwest Florida would be complete if you didn’t add The Everglades to your itinerary. , Especially if you are traveling Southwest Florida in winter and spring. The dry season and the best time to visit the Everglades is from November to April. The Everglades NP is among the best national parks to visit in March . Everglades National Park has some of the most diverse wildlife , including manatees, crocodiles, and Florida panthers . It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the only subtropical preserve in North America. 

As with most National Parks, there are plenty of outdoor activities including biking, canoeing, fishing, and camping. It’s easy to spend an entire day, or even a weekend, exploring all that the Everglades NP has to offer.

One of the most popular ways to see the Everglades is by taking an airboat tour. These tours typically last around 60 minutes. During a tour, you’ll fly down the waterways exploring the Mangrove forests and wetlands as you go. Keep your eyes peeled to see local birds, alligators, and several other animal residents that live here in the Everglades (and there are a lot!). Nestled on the Gulf Coast of Florida, Naples Pier is a must-visit destination for tourists and locals alike. With its stunning views of the ocean, boardwalk to explore, and incredible opportunities for people-watching, it’s no wonder why this spot is so popular! T he Pier also extends around 1,000 feet into the ocean , making it one of the longer piers to visit in Florida .

Strolling Naples Pier at sunset is among the best things to do in Southwest Florida. however, from sunset watching to taking in the salty air, there’s a lot that makes Naples Pier an unforgettable experience. 

Unfortunately, Hurricane Ian in September 2022 did some damage to this area and the pier which has caused parts of the pier to be closed until further notice. However, don’t let that stop you from visiting as there’s still plenty to do around the area.

Next to the iconic pier is Naples Beach , a beautiful spot with miles of white sand to explore. It’s a picturesque beach that’s great for swimming (except during Red Tide season).

If you’re looking for an outdoor activity with a little more adventure in Florida, look no further than kayaking in Southwest Florida . With picturesque views and sprawling mangrove forests, this area of the Sunshine State offers plenty of opportunities to explore and experience nature up close.  Some of the most popular areas include Marco Island and Naples, where places like the Ten Thousand Islands and Rookery Bay Reserve are perfect for kayaking. As an added bonus, you can even take a guided tour led by local guides who know all the best spots—the perfect way to get an insider’s view into hidden gems and more! And, just to remind you Marco Island and Naples are among the best spring break destinations for families !

That’s right; I’m talking about Manatees. You can find these majestic creatures swimming along various state parks, lagoons, and waterways around the state. And Southwest Florida is no exception as there are plenty of places to see them in this area. Popular places to see manatees in this region include Manatee Park in Fort Myers and Lovers Key State Park . People often visit these destinations to observe and admire these gentle giants in their natural habitats. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a baby manatee!  As a side note, there are many laws protecting Manatees that you need to be aware of, some of which include not pursuing, harassing, or annoying the creatures. It’s best to enjoy manatees from a safe distance, which protects both them and you. 

Venice Beach , located slightly north of Punta Gorda, is known by locals and tourists alike as the “Shark Tooth Capital of the World.” It should come as no surprise then that this beach is the perfect spot to bring home shark teeth as a unique souvenir from Florida.  I grew up looking for shark teeth as a kid and it was always so exciting to find one after searching for so long! Sure, kids love this type of thing. It is among the kids’ favorite things to do in Southwest Florida. But, it’s also just a fun day activity for adults as well.  You can find these fossilized shark teeth all along the shoreline (in the shell line), but it’s not always as easy as it sounds to find them. You’ll have to sift through lots of sand to find even one or two shark teeth. You can make this process a little easier by picking up what is known as the “Venice Snow Shovel” from a local shop nearby which has a screen that helps you sift through the sand a lot faster.

And hey, if you don’t have any luck finding any shark teeth on your trip you can always grab them as a souvenir at one of the local shops as well. It’s all about the experience anyway! Tip: You can also head to Fort Myers Beach to dig for shark teeth, especially near the beach’s shell line.

If you’re craving more time spent outside and learning about the local wildlife, J.N. “Ding” Darling Wildlife Refuge should absolutely be at the top of your list. “Why?” you might ask. This refuge on Sanibel Island is known for its undeveloped mangrove ecosystem (and it’s part of the largest in the United States). Its bird inhabitants are also a major draw to this refuge, making it an absolute must-visit destination in Southwest Florida.

Even if you don’t have a fondness to bird watching or checking out the mangroves, you can still enjoy the great outdoors on the trails where you can walk or bike and enjoy the peace and quiet. You can even ride on the tram with a guided tour of the Darling National Wildlife Refuge, which will give you a lot more information than driving or walking through on your own.  Be on the lookout for wildlife such as iguanas , crabs , jumping fish , alligators (of course), and much more. This refuge houses many endangered or threatened animals making it a great home for them to thrive.  Tip: Sadly, Hurricane Ian inflicted a lot of damage on this Refuge. The Wildlife Refuge is closed currently but with the hope of reopening in the future. Add it to your future Southwest Florida bucket list!

Thomas Edison , the inventor of the light bulb just to refresh your memory, had his winter home in the area first. Then, he invited Ford to visit (the inventor of the Model T Car). Ford quickly fell in love with the area and purchased the home next to Edison’s . Today, these estates offer visitors a unique opportunity to explore history through tours of the estates as well as the expansive botanical gardens. The gardens and trees here are absolutely stunning. I recommend packing a lunch or bringing a snack and just sitting outside to take it all in. Plus, if you’re a history buff like myself you’ll love that you’re standing where two of the greatest inventors stood at one point in time!  This is a must for things to do in Southwest Florida and a great activity for the morning or afternoon.

Are you looking for a place to escape the hustle and bustle or heavily trafficked areas in Florida? You’ll absolutely love Cayo Costa State Park ! Located off the coast of Florida just north of North Captiva Island, this 7-mile-long island is filled with untouched beaches , outdoor activities , and plenty of memorable things to do. 

There’s plenty to do – swimming, biking, birdwatching , or even shelling (there’s some incredible shelling here!). The island was once a fishing area for the Caluso Indians, so it should be no surprise that it’s still a great spot for anglers.  You may even want to consider renting a cabin or campsite for the night to have more time to explore the state park. Just note, that there isn’t any electricity on the island, and in true Florida fashion, there are lots of bugs!

Ready for one of the most unique things to do in Southwest Florida? Go fossil hunting on the Peace River ! The Peace River runs through Paynes Creek Historic State Park , formerly inhabited by the Calusa Native Americans hundreds of years ago. A visit here is a great way to experience nature while also learning about the area’s history. The gentle flow of the river makes canoeing or kayaking easy for all levels of paddlers, and its slow current has helped to preserve fossils that may be hundreds or even thousands of years old . You can find fossils of bison, alligators, mammoths, and even mastodons , which is a great way to spend a day in the area. This is a great activity near Punta Gorda, Florida as the lower end of the river has some of the best spots in Southwest Florida for fossil hunting.

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a must-visit in Southwest Florida for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers. Located near Naples, it’s home to t he world’s largest strand of virgin bald cypress trees , some of which are up to 600 years old.   You’ll hike along a boardwalk trail that weaves between the ancient trees and offers stunning views of the swamp forest canopy. It’s a unique experience for exploring nature and wildlife, with plenty of opportunities for birdwatching , wildlife sightings and even discovering incredible plants along the way. 

Located between Fort Myers Beach and Bonita Springs, Lovers Key State Park is often known as a romantic destination in Southwest Florida. It’s one of the most beautiful state park s, with plenty of hiking trails as well as an incredible shoreline , and even the chance to ride a beach tram.

Visiting Lovers Key Beach is a must-do in Southwest Florida. At around 2.5 miles long, with beautiful white sand, it’s the perfect spot for a stroll or a place to sunbathe and relax for the day. You can also explore the mangrove forests and canals on a kayak ECO tour . It is the best way to spot manatees, dolphins, bald eagles, and tons of other wildlife in the area. Not to mention, there are more than 40 species of birds that call this place home!

If you’re looking for something fun but also educational, look no further than Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens . This 43-acre zoo is the only nationally accredited zoo in the area and has consistently been voted as the “Best Place to Take Kids” and “Best Local Attraction.”  Visiting Naples Zoo with kids is the top thing to do in Southwest Florida with kids.

Naples Zoo houses rare species like Malagasy Fosas , giant anteaters , and even the African honey badgers . Plus, you’ll have the chance to hand-feed giraffes which is a highlight for most who visit the zoo! Of course, there are also fan favorites like cheetahs and lions which are always a classic to see. 

Best of all, this zoo is a perfect size – large enough for a wide variety of animals, yet still small enough that you can explore it all in one day.

Go on a fishing tour and have a scenic boat ride on the sea along the shore of Cape Coral. Catch some local fish species, like snook, tarpon, snapper, and grouper. Fishing beginners enjoy fishing at Cape Coral’s inshore as much as fishing experts. Take a Cape Coral Inshore Fishing Charter and have secured a professional guide, professional fishing gear, and a fishing license. If you are traveling Southwest Florida with your kids, they will enjoy fishing as much as you! And most likely, they will tell stories about their fishing adventure for the next years!

Southwest Florida and Florida in general are famous for their fresh seafood. So, there’s no trip to southwest Florida without pampering yourself with seafood. Go for shrimp tacos, scallops, fresh oysters, lobster pie, fried clams, fish & chips, and I assure you that you will be coming back to Southwest Florida regularly.

Besides great seafood, Southwest Florida has good wines, including sparking wines and dessert wines too. Florida wines are made predominately from the Muscadine grape, which grows well in humid and warm Florida. The Naples Winery , Catania’s Winery in Englewood, Goodfellas Cafe and Winery  in Sarasota, St. Armands Winery in Sarasota, Fiorelli Winery and Vineyard in Bradenton, Rosa Fiorelli Winery & Vineyard in Bradenton, and Bunker Hill Vineyard & Winery in Parrish are some of the best wineries in Southwest Florida. So, if you love good wines, don’t forget to taste Florida wines in a winery in Southwest Florida!

From fossil hunting on the Peace River to kayaking through mangrove forests, Southwest Florida is the perfect destination for outdoor adventurers and nature lovers alike. With its white sandy beaches, diverse ecosystem, rich cultural scene, and plenty of unique wildlife opportunities, there’s something here for everyone to enjoy.

The beaches of Southwest Florida are well-varied! Some are vibrant and full of energy, while others are laid-back, peaceful, and even remote.

To make things easier for you, we’ve compiled a list of the best beaches in Southwest Florida and what to expect at each. This way, you can decide on the beach that fits your preferences and vibe!

Please note: Over the years, some of the best beaches in Southwest Florida have been Lovers Key State Park in Fort Meyers, Bonita Beach Park in Bonita Springs, Barefoot beach in Naples, Lighthouse Beach Park in Sanibel Island, Bowman’s Beach in Sanibel Island, and more, but due to Hurricane Ian in September 2022, most of them were damaged and they’re still under renovation. So in this article, we’ll be focusing on just the SW Florida beaches you can visit now and we’ll update the article as soon as our beloved beaches reopen!

Best Beaches In Southwest Florida

Here are the best beaches in SW Florida you shouldn’t miss while in the region.

1. Siesta Key Beach, Siesta Key

First on our list of best beaches in Southwest Florida is Siesta Key Beach , a stretch that’s frequently ranked as the #1 beach in Florida thanks to its 99% quartz powder sand and clear waters.

Located an easy drive from downtown Sarasota, Siesta Key Beach is perfect for all types of travelers and has plenty to offer from shopping venues, dining spots, luxury resorts, and a vibrant nightlife. It also has all the amenities you’ll need from restrooms, showers, lifeguards, and more.

Popular beach and water activities here include parasailing, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, paddle boarding, beach volleyball, and more.

And since it’s nestled along the coast, popular attractions in Siesta Key such as the Siesta Key Village, Sunset Pier, and Siesta Farmers Market are located a stone’s throw away.

The beach is also within walking distance of many restaurants with our favorites being the Siesta Key Oyster Bar, Lobster Pot Restaurant, Bonjour French Cafe, and Sun Garden Cafe.

But if you don’t want to leave the beach, there are concession stands to grab a quick bite and rent some beach essentials.

While it’s perfect to visit any day, be sure to visit on Sundays to experience the enchanting Drum circle where various drummers create a fun beat and everyone is welcome to join in the drumming and dancing.

And if you’re lucky to visit in November, you may be able to see the Sand sculptures competition that takes place every year!

With all this, it’s easy to see why Siesta Key beach is one of the best Southwest Florida beaches.

2. Lido Key Beach, Sarasota

Second place on our list of best beaches in SW Florida is the equally fun and beautiful Lido Key Beach .

Part of a large barrier island that lies in the west of Sarasota County, Lido Key Beach is less crowded compared to Siesta Key, but still manages to retain a fun beachy vibe.

If you find Siesta Key too overwhelming, a short half an hour drive across the causeway will lead you here.

Aside from powdery white sand and turquoise waters, Lido Key Beach is well-loved because it offers a chance to see dolphins if you’re lucky. And if you’re into shelling and birding, you won’t be disappointed either.

It also has breathtaking sunsets, plenty of free parking, fresh seafood, and clean restrooms.

If you’re looking for a spot to shop or get a bite, simply head to St. Armands Circle and you’ll find all you need, from chic boutiques to nice restaurants, salons, and spas.

3. Port Charlotte Beach

Built in 1972, the picturesque Port Charlotte Beach is another one of our favorite SW Florida beaches.

It is clean, relaxing, family-friendly, and not too crowded on most days.

Its location close to the city (and only a 20-minute drive from the Punta Gorda Airport) makes it a well-loved hangout spot. If you don’t want to drive too far out of town to get some sea breeze, Port Charlotte Beach is the perfect option.

The beach is well-equipped with amenities such as parking and restrooms and offers facilities for you to indulge in a wide range of beach and water sports.

There are tennis courts, volleyball courts, a fishing pier, a boat ramp, a playground, a swimming pool, shaded pavilions, lounge chairs, a dork park, and even a rentable indoor space that’s great for parties, gatherings, weddings, and special events.

You should however note that the water at this beach may come with a brown tint due to tannins released from vegetation along the course of the river, but it’s nothing to worry about! It’s absolutely clean and safe to swim in.

4. Beer Can Island, Longboat Key

The small, human-made Beer Can Island also known as Greer Island is one of Florida’s best-kept secrets.

This secluded paradise located on the northernmost tip of Longboat Key can be accessed via a bridge from Anna Maria Island or by boat. In fact, it’s one of the best beaches near Anna Maria Island .

It’s remote, picturesque, and perfect for a relaxing beach day! You can hop on a boat to get here and spend a full day basking in the sun in paradise.

While Beer Can Island was known for its shore lined with driftwood and vegetation, the area underwent a beach renourishment project a few years back to stabilize the highly erosive shore. It is however still gorgeous and tranquil to spend time at!

Do note that facilities are almost non-existence so carry everything you might need for a day.

If you’re looking to get away from the crowds, this is the best beach in southwest Florida to go to.

5. Turtle Beach, Siesta Key

Located on South Siesta Key in Sarasota, Turtle Beach was named after the sea turtles that come to nest on its shores.

Turtle nesting season runs from May to October every year, and you’ll get the opportunity to see these gentle, endangered creatures come ashore to dig cavities in the sands and lay their eggs. However, don’t bother them and respect their homes.

If you’d like, you can even spend a night at the Turtle Beach Campground for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Besides being a great beach for spotting wildlife, the beach is also a popular shelling spot. You’ll be able to collect lots of beautiful shells as you walk along the stretch.

The sand here may be browner and coarser than some other South West Florida beaches, but it has lesser crowds making it the perfect spot if you’re not a fan of bustling stretches.

Some of the beach’s amenities include a playground, boat ramp, canoe launch, restrooms, parking, camping ground, and picnic shelters. There are no lifeguards on duty, however, so you’ll have to be on your guard, especially with kids.

6. South Brohard Beach and Paw Park

You can probably guess from the name of this place that it’s a dog-friendly beach!

For those planning a beach day with their furry friends, Brohard Beach Paw Park in the coastal city of Venice features a fenced dog play yard and is your best bet on letting them run around in warm sand.

It’s also equipped with amenities such as wash-off stations, drinking fountains (for both dogs and humans), picnic tables, and a fishing pier.

While playing with your dog, keep an eye out for the signages indicating where the dog beach ends, and bring along necessities such as towels and dog waste bags to pick up after your pet.

If you’re looking for a dog-friendly beach in Southwest Florida, this is one to consider.

7. Caspersen Beach, Venice

Located just next to Brohard Beach and Paw Park, Caspersen Beach is nicknamed the “Shark Tooth Capital of the World” and is one of the best places in Florida to find some prehistoric shark teeth.

This secluded beach stretches over approximately 2 miles and is perfect for long walks.

Most people searching for shark teeth head to the beach with a sand shovel and basket to scoop up souvenirs that are hard to find elsewhere.

Keep your eyes peeled as you dip your toes in the sand because they look like tiny black triangles and are easiest to spot during low tide and on the wet sand.

Besides being a popular spot for shelling and shark teeth hunts, Caspersen Beach is also a nationally recognized Blue Wave Beach, a certification awarded to beaches that are clean, safe, well-conserved, and carefully maintained.

Do note though that the shallow end of the water is a bit rocky and currents can be quite strong. Also, the sand is not white and powdery as at other beaches in southwest Florida.

8. Venice Beach, Venice

Located close to Caspersen Beach, Venice Beach is another crowd favorite in the area.

It’s also a certified Blue Wave Beach and offers scenic views of the iconic Venice Public Fishing Pier.

Since it’s located close to downtown Venice, you’ll see many locals lounging in the sun here, especially on the weekends.

Venice Beach is a good size and is equipped with amenities such as free parking, food concessions, lifeguards, volleyball courts, picnic areas, and boardwalks.

If you’d like to stay at a hotel with beach views, there are some options right at Venice Beach, including tropical-style villas, rental homes, and family-friendly hotels.

9. Nokomis Beach, Sarasota County

Drive 10 minutes from Venice Beach and you’ll find yourself at Nokomis Beach , the oldest public beach in Sarasota County.

Well-loved by locals and families, Nokomis is beautiful, laid-back, not overdeveloped, and offers a beautiful sandy shore that stretches over 14 miles.

The beach is great for swimming, sunbathing, shelling, fishing, and even surfing when the conditions are right.

One of our favorite things at Nokomis Beach is the Nokomis Beach Drum Circle which takes place every Wednesday and Saturday evening!

Run by a local drum circle, this family-friendly sunset event is joined by drummers, musicians, dancers, hoopers, and spinners, and is open for public observation.

It’s a heartwarming and special local experience that’s unique to the beach. Try to catch it while you’re there!

10. South Jetty Beach, Venice

A list of beaches in southwest Florida won’t be complete without including South Jetty Beach .

With its charming Old Florida vibe that hits all the sweet spots, South Jetty Beach is a wonderful spot to sit on some huge rocks and watch the sun go down.

The waves at South Jetty Beach can get a bit rough though, so it’s not the best beach to swim at.

However, you can come here to sight some dolphins and manatees, do a bit of fishing, watch surfers and boats go by, or simply just lazy on the beach.

Feeling peckish? Get some ice cream, hot dogs, or coffee from Jetty Jack’s, a refreshment deck located at the beach! It’s the quintessential South Jetty experience that you shouldn’t miss out on.

11. Blind Pass Beach, Sanibel

Also known as Middle Beach, Blind Pass Beach on Manasota Key is the furthest beach south in Sarasota county on Sanibel Island.

The beach consists of both a bay and beachside and offers plenty of space to enjoy the gulf.

Do note though that the amenities at Blind Pass Beach are slightly sparse and there aren’t lifeguards on duty or rental stores, but if you don’t mind just relaxing for a few hours by the beach, it’s a calming place to be.

There’s also limited parking so ensure that you arrive early to get a spot. On the other hand, available amenities include a wheelchair-accessible entrance, some picnic tables, restrooms, and showers.

If you’d like to indulge in some nature, we recommend popping by the Duisberg Trail, a trail around the freshwater lake close to the beach.

You will have a peaceful walk through the shady mangrove swamp and end up at the bay. It’s an easy trail for people of all ages, including children.

While this is not the beach you go to for swimming due to its strong currents, you can do some shelling, fishing, or even windsurfing and kiteboarding

12. Stump Pass Beach State Park, Englewood

Open from 8 AM till sundown every day, Stump Pass Beach State Park is a gorgeous Florida State Park located in Englewood.

The pristine beaches and ocean at the Stump Pass Beach State Park are perfect for shelling, swimming, snorkeling, sailing, water skiing, paddling, and even scuba diving.

Besides beach and water activities, nature lovers will appreciate its tranquil 1.3-mile hiking trail.

The trail will take you through five distinct natural communities that serve as a peaceful home to a wide variety of wildlife, including West Indian manatees, snowy egrets, osprey, frigatebirds, and gopher tortoises.

The park even offers ranger-led turtle walks and beach walks during winter months.

13. Englewood Beach at Chadwick Park

Another popular beach in southwest Florida is Englewood Beach at Chadwick Park.

Englewood Beach is wide, clean, and well-equipped with pretty much all the amenities you’ll need, from restrooms, showers, water stations, a playground, food vendors, shelters, picnic tables, grills, large pavilions, and sports courts. You can also find some shells and shark teeth along the stretch.

There is also a 900-foot boardwalk and lots of vibrant restaurants located right across the street whenever you need a bite! Our favorites are the Lock ‘N Key Restaurant and SandBar Tiki & Grille!

However, the beach’s parking situation is not the best so try to arrive earlier in the day if you’d like to snag a spot. You’ll need to pay for it via the ParkMobile app but it’s pretty cheap.

The beach can also get rather crowded on weekends and during the holiday season so plan your visit accordingly.

14. Manasota Key Beach

Located a bit off the beaten path on a quieter side of the Manasota Key island, Manasota Key Beach is an easy 15-minute drive from Englewood Beach.

It’s one of the least crowded beaches in southwest Florida and feels much like an idyllic private beach sometimes thanks to its sparse crowds.

If you find the popular Englewood Beach too overwhelming for your fancy, we suggest driving your way here for a respite from the crowds. All you have to do is cross the Manasota Key Drawbridge.

For those who’d like to connect with nature, you can easily get to the South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve, a small nature preserve that offers scenic trails.

15. South Lido County Park, Sarasota

South Lido County Park is a sprawling 100-acre haven for nature and beach lovers.

The park was acquired by the county of Sarasota in 1974 to preserve its fragile ecosystem and is now accessible to the public all year long.

From a beautiful loop trail that is fit for people of all ages and fitness levels, a hidden beach where you can escape the crowds, secluded observation platforms, and lush mangroves, South Lido County Park promises a fun adventure for all.

The park is a popular spot for bird watching, nature walks, and kayaking through the mangroves.

Keep your eyes peeled if you’re looking to spot some squirrels, manatees, or dolphins! If you’re lucky, they may come out to play while you’re exploring the park.

You should however note that visitors are advised against swimming here due to strong currents so if you’re looking for a beach to swim at, this may not be your best choice.

16. Little Hickory Island Beach Park, Bonita Springs

Much like its name, Little Hickory Island Beach Park is quite small as opposed to other longer and bigger public beaches in Southwest Florida, but it’s still quite a good size if you’re just looking for somewhere to bask in the sun and get some ocean breeze.

It’s the sort of beach that’s great for catching a peaceful sunset, collecting seashells, and taking a refreshing dip.

Amenities at Little Hickory Island Beach Park include restrooms, showers, shelters, and picnic tables.

Parking is also available, though we suggest avoiding peak hours if you don’t want to wait around for a vacant spot!

17. Gasparilla Island

Located halfway between Sarasota and Fort Myers, the beautiful Gasparilla Island is one of our favorite Gulf Coast barrier islands in southwest Florida.

The Island is home to Gasparilla Island State Park which harbors a handful of pristine beaches with blue-green waters, soft white sand, and lovely tropical charm.

Unlike many other boat-only islands in the vicinity, Gasparilla Island is just a short drive over the bridge making it easy to reach.

Make sure to catch a glimpse of the most iconic historical monument on the island — a wooden lighthouse that stands on the southern end of the island.

The Port Boca Grande Lighthouse was built in 1890 and has guided thousands of ships to the safety of Charlotte Harbor.

It remains open for visiting and even doubles as a museum where you can absorb some knowledge of Gasparilla Island’s rich history.

18. Cayo Costa State Park

A close ‘competitor’ of Gasparilla Island is its neighboring barrier island park, the equally beautiful Cayo Costa State Park that’s located directly south of Gasparilla.

Only accessible by private boat, ferry, or helicopter, Cayo Costa State Park boasts 9 miles of gorgeous beaches, acres of pine forests, and lush mangrove swamps.

The island is remote, beautifully maintained, and pretty much an unspoiled slice of paradise.

The beaches of Cayo Costa State Park are perfect for all types of beach and water activities, and great for catching a glimpse of many wildlife that frequent the island.

This includes four different species of sea turtles, West Indian manatees, bottlenose dolphins, snowy egrets, and eagles.

Besides spending time at the beach, we also suggest considering other popular recreational activities such as hiking and camping!

19. Tigertail Beach, Marco Island

Located further south along the coast is Marco Island, which also offers plenty of beach fun and one, in particular, you can’t miss is Tigertail Beach which was once an offshore sandbar.

When Hurricane Wilma hit the island in 2005, the sand piled up and connected the stretch to the mainland. Eventually, Tigertail Beach was formed and now consists of an inner and outer beach.

One of the beaches can be reached by waddling across the waist-high saltwater lagoon during low tide which is a fun experience that’s unique to the island.

You can also opt to paddleboard or kayak over or even bring a float! When you reach the beach, you’ll be welcomed by soft sands and blue waters where you might even spot some dolphins.

When it comes to amenities, there is parking space which comes with a high price tag compared to other SW Florida FL beaches on this list, changing rooms, a snack bar, a bird-watching tower, and a kids’ play area if you’re traveling with kids in tow.

20. Keewaydin Island

Located just off the coast of Naples, Keewaydin Island is another gem not to be missed.

This tranquil barrier island has no cars, roads, or bridges as a result of petitions from its residents to prevent commercial development meaning that it can only be accessed by boat.

Thanks to that, the island remains primitive, unspoiled, and pristine! You can enjoy miles of soft beach without the sore view of high-rise buildings. And, did we mention that the island has the only pet-friendly beach in the vicinity?

Though Keewaydin Island’s underdevelopment can be a pro, it can be a con in some instances since it’s not as well-equipped as other Southwest Florida beaches.

There are no restrooms, showers, garbage cans, or shelters so make sure to come prepared! Pack some trash bags to avoid leaving behind litter, as well as umbrellas if you don’t want to get sunburnt.

You won’t go hungry here though, as Keewaydin Island is known for being an anchor spot for colorful food boats that serve drinks and bites such as sandwiches, ice cream, hot dogs, beer, and soda — but only in the high season.

21. Clam Pass Park, North Naples

Tucked behind Naples Grande Beach Resort, Clam Pass Park is one of the most popular beaches in North Naples.

With 35 acres of coastal habitat and a boardwalk that runs through a mangrove forest, Clam Pass Park is ideal for both family beach days and an adventure close to nature.

The beach is equipped with food stands, a kids’ play area, and rental shops. You can also hop on the free electric trams that run around the vicinity all day long ferrying visitors from the parking lot, hotel, and restaurants to the beach.

You should note that the beach is rather long and crowds thin out after a distance, so if you’d like a bit more privacy, walk along a bit further and you may have some area all to yourself!

Note: the bathrooms at the beach are temporarily unavailable due to destruction from Hurricane Ian.

22. Bunche Beach Preserve, Fort Meyers

Last up on our list of Southwest FL beaches is the Bunche Beach Preserve . Located on San Carlos Bay, the Bunche Beach Preserve remains unknown to most people traveling to Florida.

Instead, it’s a favorite amongst locals, especially those with a soft spot for birds. Groups of birds such as ibises, pelicans, and spoonbills gather at the preserve in the colder winter months making it a great place for birdwatching.

Wildlife-watching and beach activities aside, Bunche Beach Preserve is an excellent spot for kayaking.

You can rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore its shady mangrove creeks and tunnels if you’re up for an adventure.

And at the end of the day, don’t be in a rush to leave! Stay to watch the sunset at the beach — it’s simply amazing when the skies are clear!

Exploring the wilds of southwest florida's state parks.

Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park.

Between Knight Island and Little Gasparilla Island, Don Pedro State Park is accessible only by private boat or ferry.

It’s 9 a.m., and we’re chasing ghosts. Not the kind that flit around after dark, but the sort that hide high in the pop ash trees of Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park . We’re hot on the trail of the ghost orchid. It’s a slow, deliberate treasure hunt, where we inspect each trunk for the telltale roots that signal this rare orchid’s presence. Then our guide, park biologist Mike Owen, spots one, dangling like a leaping ivory frog well above our heads. 

It’s not just a walk in the park. An excursion into southwest Florida can take you places you never dreamed were so close to home. A watery wilderness of 126 square miles, Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park in Southwest Florida near the Everglades town of Copeland is our very own Amazon, with more species of native bromeliads and orchids than anywhere else in the United States.

Royal Fronds

At Naples’ Collier-Seminole State Park , visitors can camp beneath the fronds of the largest stand of native Florida royal palms in the state as they prepare for a night adventure, with narration courtesy of swamp creatures. On this guided moonlight adventure, you can hike or take a spooky canoe paddle through mangrove tunnels.

Key to the Past

Mangroves define the natural shoreline of Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast in Estero, surrounding mysterious places including Mound Key Archaeological State Park . Dip your paddle into Estero Bay and make the journey to this massive shell mound, which marks the remains of the capital of the ancient Calusa culture, established in 100 A.D. Surrounded by Florida’s first aquatic preserve, Estero Bay Preserve State Park , it’s a getaway you won’t forget, meandering through a maze of mangrove islands protected by the barrier island of Lovers Key.

Fall in Love

If you’re kayaking the preserve, one launch point is Lovers Key State Park , known for its popular beaches. Take an off-road bicycle to this popular park in Fort Myers Beach and you can beat the crowds with a trip down the Black Island Trail, a five-mile-long course that zigzags through tropical vegetation.

Utopian Dreams

On the other side of Estero Bay, the most popular launch point for Mound Key is Koreshan State Historic Site . Dr. Cyrus Teed founded a utopian commune on this site in 1894, drawing together followers who believed that the universe was inside a giant, hollow sphere. Balance that with the group’s progressive views on women’s rights as you tour the village, and then learn to make your own Koreshan bread with a course on Dutch oven cooking. Or wait until the moonlight is right, and join a tour guide on a very special nighttime walk. Chasing ghosts, of course. 

Sand Footprint

Savor sea breezes from the Gulf of Mexico during a walk along a wild beach. At the south end of Manasota Key, Stump Pass Beach State Park in Southwest Florida is popular with sunbathers, but you can find your own secluded spot. Duck the crowds by following the nature trail down the narrow peninsula, or walk the beach to your own quiet cove and watch dolphins play in the bay.

Find true solitude at Don Pedro Island State Park , a park nestled offshore of the curves of Charlotte County’s coastline. Launch your kayak or watercraft from the land base at Cape Haze – a little-known treasure in itself, with two nature trail loops and a picnic area – and paddle to the dock of this open and breezy 230-acre park. Colorful grasslands and dunes topped with sea oats form the backdrop to an unspoiled beach. Ferryboats bring visitors Friday through Sunday; the rest of the week, it’s yours.

At Gasparilla Island State Park on Boca Grande, sunning near aquamarine waters is one way to spend the day, but a visit isn’t complete without a step back in time.

Light up your Beach

At Gasparilla Island State Park on Boca Grande, sunning near aquamarine waters is one way to spend the day, but a visit isn’t complete without a step back in time. At the south tip of the island, the Boca Grande Lighthouse Museum illuminates the past, covering topics including the “rancho” fish farms tended by early Spanish settlers, phosphate barges and railway service to Boca Grande. It is on these shores that the legend of the pirate José Gaspar unfolds, complete with a kidnapped princess and buried treasure. Will it be yours to find?

Walk in pirates’ footsteps along the windswept shores of Cayo Costa island, where Cayo Costa State Park in Southwest Florida offers an affordable oceanfront stay at its rustic cabins and campsites. Play Robinson Crusoe as you walk the curve of the beach and see a treasure trove of rare sea shells – true tulips, lion’s paws and more. Reached by ferryboat from Pineland or by a very strenuous paddling trip from Pine Island, Cayo Costa is perfect for a family getaway-from-it-all, your own paradise with a view.

Take in a two-mile view across an unbelievably broad prairie of grasses and wildflowers waving in the breeze at Sarasota’s Myakka River State Park . Climb 74 feet up to the top of the Canopy Walk tower, and cross the swinging bridge 25 feet off the ground in the forest canopy among the live oaks. It’s just off Park Drive, down a short nature trail. Or get farther off the beaten path, don a backpack and hike up to 39 miles along the Myakka Hiking Trail in the backcountry.

Get into the Swing of Things

At Paynes Creek Historic State Park , a 1930s swinging bridge connects the sites of Fort Chokonikla and the Kennedy-Darling Trading Post, which sat on the northern border of the Seminole Reservation in 1849. An attack on the post prompted construction of the fort and set events in motion that led to the Third Seminole War. Miles of hiking trails wind through these shady forests along the creek and the Peace River in Bowling Green.

Pull up your Bootstraps

Put on your hiking boots and explore the wild scrub of Oscar Scherer State Park . In 1872, Oscar Scherer invented a process to dye shoe leather; in 1955, his daughter bequeathed this park to the people of Florida in his name. Nearly 12 miles of trails meander by shady creeks and through pine flatwoods and scrub – Florida’s desert. The desert is the perfect home for the Florida scrub-jay. Bring your binoculars to spot these nearly foot-long (including tail) blue birds, which travel in family groups. On a mountain bike, you can explore the sandy trails. Or bring (or rent) a canoe and slip through the wilds on a paddle trip down South Creek.
