Sydney to Brisbane Experience: Bushwalks & Surfing

As far as tours go, it's great to have others to enjoy with. Wake Up was a nice hostel with a great breakfast included the first day. That day I chose to take the ferry to Manly where our tour guide Georgia showed us shopping, the beach, and this great acai bowl restaurant. From Sydney we took the 9 hour train ride to surf x camp in arrawara. The teepee I slept in was so cool. The surf lesson was great...but we only had less than 1 hour surfing in the water, if we wanted more we had to pay more, in the afternoon we went for a walk along the beach with some local indiginous people to learn about the plants of the area and try some, we stopped at the campground to find kangaroo. The food at surf X was good. surf x still hasn't sent us the link for the surfing photos though. Byron Bay is a great surf town, although I didn't surf Wake Up had free surfboards available...I had purchased the option to kayak with dolphins and didn't feel like surfing after that. the town had lots of little shops and restaurants and a walk to the lighthouse and furthest easterly point in Australia. The next day we went to Brisbane, after a koala bushwalk where we didn't see koala. In Brisbane check out Southbank and Queen street after dark.

This tour was absolutely fantastic. We were able to squeeze in and see so much of Tasmania’s natural beauty! Our tour guide Hayden was amazing - cool, calm and knowledgeable! I was overjoyed when he helped us spot some platypus in their natural environment. Whilst on the bus itself he shared heaps of information and fun facts to keep us entertained. There is a lot of early starts - which is totally fair enough since it meant we could enjoy so much of what Tasmania has to offer. There is a lot of walking - but there are many choices of walks to do, so you can chose the level of difficulty in most places and all walks are optional. One of my favourite trips in Australia so far ?

Travel Australia’s Outback At Any Age

You are never too old to travel outback australia. unleash your inner traveller with our amazing outback tours for seniors in australia.

We often receive questions from people about whether our tours in Australia are suitable for seniors. We do have many trips that are open age and specific trips that we recommend especially for those over 50. We specialize in Outback tours for seniors in Australia.

These trips are perfect for you if your backpacking days are numbered but you still want to travel on a budget and experience Australia close up. So, in this article, we will let you know the perfect trips for you in Australia if you are interested in outback tours for seniors.

We will look at Uluru tours for seniors, Kimberley tours for seniors, and also of course tours to Kakadu National Park from Darwin for seniors. We want everywhere in Australia to be accessible for every age! We have tours for over 50s in Australia but they are still full of adventure, hiking, and activiity.

Portrait Of Smiling Senior Friends Hiking In Along Base walk at Uluru

As a senior traveler, we are referring to you as a fun-loving adventurer with experience, aged 50 years or above. You may be one of Australia’s baby boomer generation wanting to see your own country, a teacher from Europe on a summer holiday break to visit Australia or a couple in your 50s on an around the world trip. Whichever it is we have a trip for you. Don’t be offended by the ‘senior’ label, please take it as a compliment. We still want you to go deep into the outback and have an adventure.

We know you do not want to join a group of 18-30s on a bus tour with loud music and lots of partying. We know you want to get off the beaten track and see Australia’s outback. We also want to offer an extra level of knowledge and education from our experienced tour guides to you, as we know you are keen to learn about where you are visiting. We are also aware you can hike often longer than those in their 20s and are keener to see the great outdoors and not just sit on your phone.

All our tours suitable for seniors are small group adventures in Australia.

What do we mean by a small group adventure tour in Australia? You will not be on a 52 seater coach driving to just the highlights of each destination for a photo opportunity. Our Australia tours get you right into the heart of each area and allow you to take the hiking tracks and walks to experience all the land has to offer. Our backpacking trips normally run with a larger group as they like to have a drink and socialise in the evenings. Our more comfortable outback trips for seniors and those a bit more mature run in smaller buses. This helps us get off the beaten track and away from the crowds.

On all these trips we do recommend you are able to walk 6kms over uneven ground. Please be aware of the heat in Australia. You are welcome to bring hiking sticks to aid you and we highly recommend ankle-high walking shoes. There is also a strong element of participation on our group tours. So we can keep these trips at great value and with good group dynamics, we ask everyone to get involved with cooking and washing up on tour.

“On all these trips we do recommend you are able to walk 6kms over uneven ground.” Real Aussie Adventures

Outback tours for seniors in Australia

Here is the breakdown of our outback tours for seniors in Australia by destination.

Tours from Darwin suitable for seniors

We have a great selection of Kakadu tours for seniors all starting from Darwin. To get you up close to the fantastic Top End of Australia.

3 day Kakadu tours

One of our tours from Darwin out to Kakadu National Park and Litchfield in the Northern Territory is very suitable for seniors.

Our 3 day Kakadu tour, the Dragonfly Dreaming , is appropriate for those over 40. We do however take passengers of any age on this Kakadu tour including children, so great for a family. We even have a good family rate if you are a parent wanting to show your children the wonders of the Northern Territory.

We happily take older passengers if your fitness is good. We recommend that you can walk for 6km over slightly rough terrain comfortably. Our guides are there to help you over more rocky terrain, but you are expected to do the walks unaided.

We pick you up directly from your hotel if it’s in Darwin’s central area, so no need to walk far in the morning to a meeting place. At each campsite, you will not have to walk too far to get to our enclosed kitchen area or to your permanent tent. On our Kakadu camping trips, we differ a bit from those marketed at backpackers and the 18-30 crew. We offer permanent tents inside of which is a real bed and pillow. So you will have a comfortable night’s sleep.

We also have hot showers and toilets close to the campsite. If you have to get up in the night it isn’t a far walk to the facilities. We do advise you to bring a torch so you can see on those night wanderings. We have an article on what items to take on an outback tour, so check that out.

The gorges at Jim Jim and Twin are undeniable highlights of any Kakadu tour. The walking to Jim Jim falls is around 900m. It’s rugged, involving scrambling up and down rocks and so is only suitable for people with a reasonable level of fitness. At the plunge pool, there is time for swimming, relaxing, and enjoying the spectacular scenery. Then we walk back. The walk should take about 1 hour in, so no rushing for this walk. There isn’t much height in the walk, so no elevated climbing.

5 Day 4WD Top End Tour from Darwin

Our 5-day adventure is also a perfect Kakadu Tour for seniors who have a good level of fitness. And those who love camping!

With World Heritage national parks, cascading waterfalls, and expansive wetlands filled with exotic wildlife, not to mention some of the oldest rock art anywhere earth, it’s little wonder the Northern Territory’s Top End has captured the attention of travelers from Taree to Timbuktu.

Departing throughout 2022, this small-group tour is your chance to experience its majesty for yourself.

This small-group tour includes private campsite accommodation, 12 meals including daily breakfast, camping equipment, and fees, as well as the services of two professional guides

The tour has two guides for the entire trip, for taking customers on walks with different fitness levels, where one guide can do longer walks with the fitter members of the group, and the other guide can do a shorter walk for those less mobile.

You will stay in our permanent tents, which are perfect for seniors as you are not sleeping on the ground.

Check out more about the adventure by clicking here: 5 Day Top End and ArnhemLand Tour.

5 Day Comfort Kakadu Tours

For those looking for an outback tour for seniors with a little more comfort- we have the perfect Kakadu, Litchfield, and Katherine Gorge tour for you. We provide you with a fully accommodated tour, staying in a resort in Kakadu and motels along the way.

This tour still has the element of adventure, requiring a good level of fitness. However, with the luxury of sleeping inside..in some aircon! A must for those tropical temperatures of the Top End.

Departing Darwin this tour is a must for those looking for a comprehensive visit to the highlights of this region.

Find out more here: 5 Day Kakadu, Litchfield and Katherine Adventure Tour

We also have this as a 4-day tour, you will miss out on Litchfield National Park, but perfect if you are shorter on time. 4 Day Kakadu Outback Adventure Tour.

Darwin Day Tours for Seniors

We have our 1 Day Litchfield National Park and 1 Day Kakadu Tours from Darwin which are perfect for seniors and over 50’s.

With less walking and hiking on our day trips, they are ideal if you do not want to do a trip that’s extremely active.

Kakadu National Park is around a 3 hour drive from Darwin, so a day trip to Kakadu is a long day. However, well worth the visit, it’s a must do on your Top End trip.

For a one-day tour to Kakadu or Litchfield for seniors you still need a good mobility level. You will be getting on and off the minibus many times during the day. Plus walking to waterfalls and sites of interest.

So many tours from Darwin for seniors. Always remember it’s a hot tropical environment up in the Top End. So come prepared with a refillable water bottle and layers.

Alice Springs tours for seniors

Uluru tours for seniors.

If you are a senior or more mature and looking for an Uluru tour for seniors from Alice Springs or Ayers Rock then we can help! Our open-aged trip for 4 days is perfect for those who are not youth anymore. We also take children on this tour and have a great rate if you are a family. Grandchildren welcome!

4 Day Uluru Tours

Our comfort 4 day tour to Uluru, Kings Canyon and Kata Tjuta trip pick ups from most hotels in Alice Springs and also picks up at Ayers rock airport. So if you have taken advantage of the cheap flights into Ayers Rock we can assist.

Check out more about our 4 day Uluru tour suitable for seniors here:

4 Day 4WD Perentie Dreaming Red Centre Safari

Just like in Kakadu National Park we require a good level of fitness for these Red Centre trips. We ask that everyone can walk up to 5Km unaided over slightly rough terrain.

The 4-day tour has a short guided base walk at Uluru included. Then the guide will leave you to explore Uluru up close by yourself. Many people ask how far is it around the base of Uluru? It is 11km on a dirt path. there is no climbing, and can be completed in around 2-3 hours. So very manageable for those with basic fitness. We allocate you 2-3 hours to do this walk, so you are able to walk the whole thing or just take in some of the flora and fauna at a relaxed pace. Depending on your own fitness level.

Your biggest day of walking on this trip will be in Kings Canyon, the walking here is with your guide. First you climb up the Canyon, in a section we call heart attack hill. There are 500 steps to climb, this can be done at your own pace. It’s a 75 degrees incline and should take about 30 mins. You then do the Kings Canyon Rim walk, around a 3 and a half hour hike. You will see the lost city, the water hole, and our main viewing points. Up on Kings Canyon its all rugged terrain but no climbing rocks. Again our pace isn’t rushed, so please take your time.

Cooktown Exploring

The Valley of the Winds walk at Kata Tjuta is a simple 1-2 hour walk done in the morning so out of the heat. The weather can be our main concern in the Red Centre, we ask you to constantly be drinking water and aim to do all walks out of the midday sun.

On this tour you will stay in our permanent tents, so a comfortable camping experience.

3 Day Uluru tour

Our 3 day Uluru tour from Alice Springs or Ayers Rock is also great for seniors. Not too long to be away from creature comforts and taking in the highlights on the region. Hop on board for the wonders of Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), and Watarrka (Kings Canyon).

3 Day Uluru tour.

For more about our Uluru tours check out our article: Best Uluru Tours.

Kimberley tours for seniors

We have many hikes on our Kimberley tours with walks daily. Please be aware on average 6-7km will be walked daily, over rough terrain. We will walk and hike to waterfalls often over rocky boulders. You will then swim in the pools, so a good confidence in the water is also required.

At night on our Kimberley tours, you will be sleeping in swags on the floor. True outback camping here! You can bring them into the tents for more comfort from the elements however you will need to be happy to get on and off the floor. We also ask you to help with the setup and pack down of the camp on tour and help the guides with some preparing of the food and washing up. So where possible you will need to be active enough to get stuck in with a multitude of tasks over the 10-day tour. Not a relaxing holiday on this trip, but well worth the adventure as the Kimberley is out of this world!

For 2022 we are filling fast and have limited space on our Kimberley trips.

Here is what your Over 50s holiday with Nature Bound Australia offers

Tour dates and duration.

  • Our Over 50s Holidays, Australia-wide, are scheduled for the most comfortable season and climate.
  • We conduct limited departures to any one region, annually, in the interest of variety and ecotourism principles.
  • Tours vary from 7 to 17 days duration enabling guest immersion and connection locally with places, people and nature.

Tour group size and ages

  • Each group is limited to 3 to 8 guests – a genuine small group enabling personal communication and experiential enjoyment. Previous guests have described it as “ like travelling with the best of old friends “.
  • In fact, guests across 30 years have ranged from 50 to 80 yrs. All we ask is – bring your soft adventure spirit.
  • Guests range from couples and small groups of friends including a predominance of solo travellers, particularly ladies.
  • We do offer customised tours for private or small groups.

Creature comforts

  • We understand the need for comfortable nights.
  • Accommodation varies across all tours but the best available range from luxury hotels and resorts to outback lodges, cabins and pubs with ensuite facilities. Accommodations full of character and welcoming local owners.
  • Yes, single supplement choices over a whole or part tour are available for solo privacy, while base pricing reflects twin share.
  • Each day starts with a hearty cooked or continental breakfast of your choosing.
  • On board refrigeration ensures our home baked morning and afternoon teas and fresh fruit selection are legendary.
  • Lunches are light, of local fare, or freshly packed for an active walking excursion.
  • Evening meals include delicious a-la-carte menus, buffets or set menu with choices in the more remote regions.
  • Yes, we plan for special dietary requirements.
  • Yes, we include a glass of wine or beverage with dinner.
  • Don’t be surprised if we break our travels with a spontaneous treat as well.

Transport and travel

  • Travel in our late model 4WD vehicles with comfort and safety, fitted out for remote outback journeys.
  • This ensures exclusive access to features “off the beaten track”.
  • Some days are local access only and others involve some travel, broken into pleasant stages between features and comfort stops.
  • Our program each day is anything but rigid and each stop offers opportunity to roam and explore.

Style and ethos

  • Our Over 50s Holidays are carefully designed as bespoke travel, flexible and receptive to serendipity moments.
  • Much of the day centres around rich story telling about nature, landscape, history, local features and communities.
  • We encourage guests to enjoy the golden hours of sunrise and sunset, including wildlife and photography time, then to share their experiences with others on tour.

How much gear

  • We recommend a maximum of 18 to 20 kgs of gear in one or two soft manageable bags.
  • Add your small day pack which will contain personal items, in reach at all times.

Personal commitment

  • From first enquiry to well after tour completion we are dedicated to your personal needs and enjoyment. This too reflects in our guest to guest disposition.
  • Guests of 13 years or more ago have returned to holiday with us and new adventurers freely communicate with us, in detail, months ahead of their booking or tour.
  • Our tour planning and delivery might be legendary but more importantly has served to nurture lasting friendships across the globe.
  • We will canvass your special interests or reasons for joining the tour to ensure  your experience is a fulfilling one.

Being informed

  • Upon booking you will be fully briefed on tour expectations and we actively seek your feedback at all times.
  • Your travel compendium will include extensive background information on each day of the tour.
  • You will be guided in an informative rather than “herding” atmosphere each day.

The guided walks

  • You can choose between tours with regular guided walks or a more passive travel atmosphere.
  • Selection of walks depend on climatic conditions and type of terrain, mostly of 2 to 6 hour duration and easy to moderate going.
  • Most tours have two guides enabling guests to craft their days between the active and passive.
  • Walking pace is determined by the spontaneous response to features and photography, presence of wildlife etc.
  • Wellness underpins the walking spirit.
  • Yes we have ecotourism accreditation which ensures our tour conduct is in harmony with nature and supportive of local communities, businesses and Indigenous Culture.

Story telling

  • While you have selected a specific tour there will be plenty of downtime to quiz us on the experiences and nature of our other tours. The story telling covers adventures across Australia over 30 or more years – all part of a fulfilling holiday. Normally our guests have a rich history of travel experiences so bring yours’ along too.

Price and Discounts

  • All tours are offered on an all-inclusive price basis. Once on tour there are no add-on surprises.
  • Any personal discretionary options (like an add on scenic flight) will be known in advance.
  • All supplier discounts negotiated are factored into the tour price, to our guest’s benefit.
  • We receive no commissions on sales or side bookings.
  • For the benefit and peace of mind, we communicate direct with all guests and do not rely on agents.
  • Discounts of $200 to $300 per person apply to all tours under Small Group, Early Bird and Loyalty bookings.

How to book

  • You may wish to telephone or email us in advance to gauge availability on a tour. This is important given the small group size and limited departures.
  • After this you can book on line or request a paper copy of the form for completion and posting to us.
  • Bookings require a 10% deposit. Terms and Conditions apply.

South Australia has a deep Aboriginal history with many ancient intersecting trade routes running through the state. A cluster of historic colonial towns, such as Peterborough, Clare and Burra can be found close to each other in the south of the state between the Flinders Ranges National park and Adelaide.

The south eastern coastline has a warm Mediterranean climate around Yorke and Eyre peninsulas , and houses much of the state’s inhabited region. The climate transitions to a hotter desert landscape as you head further north or west into the Australian outback. One of the main geographic features of the state includes the limestone coast of the Great Australian Bight which can be found along the state’s south coast on the Southern Ocean. This provides the traveller with stunning coastal scenery. The sparse Nullarbor Plain (from the Latin for no trees) lies in the state’s west, while the great Murray River in the east, flows through some of the more temperate and fertile parts of the state. The Eyre Peninsula tour highlights the wildlife of the area, such as the Australian sea lion. South Australia is also well known as an important Australian wine region, with areas such as the Barossa Valley , Clare Valley , and the Adelaide Hills all producing some of the most notable Australian wines. These regions also provide an opportunity for those wishing to experience a wine tasting on a wine tour .

South Australia is also famous for the opal mining town of Coober Pedy with its active opal field and opal mines. The interest of the opal mines is supplemented by curiosities such as the underground hotel, designed to combat the often excessive summer heat of outback South Australia. It is common to visit Coober Pedy on the road to Alice Springs . To the east of South Australia is Oodnadatta and Lake Eyre. Lake Eyre has a massive catchment area, but is often dry. It is home to abundant wildlife, but only after a wet year. The magnificent Flinders Ranges with Wilpena Pound , north of Adelaide, is a renowned tourist attraction.

South Australia ‘s earliest history traces back to its Indigenous people , with a history that predates European colonization in the region by at least 40,000 years. Aboriginal settlement is thought to have begun on the continent as early as 125,000 years ago , making its way gradually south. The arrival of Aboriginal people in South Australia 49,000 years ago was confirmed by the discovery of artefacts and fossils 2016 at Warratyi, in the Flinders ranges. These finds place the arrival of Aboriginal people much earlier than had previously been thought.

The first European contact in the region came in the year 1624, with Dutch explorer François Thijssen coming across Australi a’s southern shore after straying off course on his route to Batavia in the Dutch East Indies. He made it as far as Nuyts Archipelago , just north of the Eyre Peninsula, before eventually heading back. Despite this early contact, more prolonged European contact would not come about until 1836, a full 212 years later. Building on Matthew Flinders ‘ legacy, namely the mapping and circumnavigation of the Australia n Continent, the colonization of South Australia began, with the passage of the South Australia Act in British Parliament in the year 1834. Unlike other Australia n colonies, such as those in New South Wales, and Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), the South Australia Act specifically forbade the transportation of convicts and use of convict labour in establishing the colony, instead touting the colony as one embodying humanist values, and promoting political, religious, and economic freedoms.

In 1836, after an eight month voyage across the globe, the first settlers, in nine ships, reached Kangaroo Island off the coast of South Australia . Kangaroo Island was used by the settlers as an initial base while surveys of the mainland were conducted, searching to find a suitable location to establish the colony. Eventually the land around the Adelaide plains was decided as the site, and settlement of the mainland began in earnest. Following a tumultuous few decades, characterized by land speculation, bankruptcy, and a labour shortage caused by gold rushes in other states, South Australia eventually became a self governing colony in the year 1856. The new state had its own constitution, one that was for the time, very progressive, guaranteeing the male right to vote, as well as suffrage for propertied women.

South Australia grew economically in the ensuing years, developing thriving industries in wool, wheat, copper and wine, with immigrants coming from across Europe, particularly Germany, bringing with them their skills and expertise. South Australia joined with the rest of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901, when the country officially became a Federation, and from then continued to grow, with its mining sector, in particular, thriving with discoveries of gold, silver, and uranium. Though South Australia has grown at a slower rate than most other Australia n states, it remains a progressive and forward thinking state, historically adopting social justice legislation years before other states, as well as currently being Australia ‘s leader in renewable energy.

Travelling to South Australia

A guided tour of South Australia as part of an South Australian outback tour can offer an experience that is rich in the states natural, and gastronomic heritage, with travellers on a South Australian tour able to enjoy the iconic limestone coast , the rugged outback beauty, and the verdant wine country that give southern Australia its distinctive character. Odyssey has developed a number of tours to South Australia, suitable for seniors, whether couples or solo travellers, that provide an itinerary for the traveller to see and learn about the deep Aboriginal history and the more recent colonial history while experiencing the dramatic landscape and culture that has shaped South Australia .

A good place to begin a tour to South Australia would be the state’s capital, Adelaide . Adelaide is home to more than three-quarters of the state’s population, this quasi city-state is the hub of commercial and cultural life in the state, bustling with theatres, museums , cafes and restaurants. While in Adelaide travellers might like to include the South Australian Art Gallery, which houses one the largest art museum collections in Australia. You can take a tour with an experienced guide, attend an artist talk or plot your own course. An unusual feature of the gallery is the William Morris Adelaide collection, the world’s second largest Morris collection after London’s V&A. This is an arts and crafts collection of William Morris ‘ wallpaper, stained glass windows, furniture, textiles and ceramics. These excellent, iconic works reflect handmade craftsmanship of decorative art from the nineteenth century. The South Australian Museum and the Royal Botanic gardens are also well worth a visit. If you come at the right time of year you may even be able to catch the Royal Adelaide Show, which is held annually and features an agricultural show as well as shops, fun fairs, and rides. For those looking for a short trip from the city, an ideal spot for a day tour is to the beautiful Adelaide Hills. The Adelaide Hills is a cool wine region just 20 minutes drive from the capital, growing predominantly Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Shiraz varieties. Its altitude, ranging between 150-700m above sea level, gives the region a cooler and wetter climate than the surrounding region, making it ideal for viticulture and wine tasting while just a stone’s throw from Adelaide city.

tours for seniors in australia

Continuing on the theme of a wine tour , some other popular South Australian wine regions include the McLaren Vale , found on the stunning Fleurieu Peninsula , the Clare Valley , and of course the most famous among them, the historic Barossa Valley . The Barossa Valley , in particular, is synonymous internationally with Australian wine, with some of the country’s most famous, and prolific producers having their homes in the region. The history of the Barossa Valley goes back to the period of German settlement in the mid 19th century, the legacy of which can still be seen in the historic architecture of many of the region’s Lutheran style churches, as well as the towns’ names such as Langmeil and Krondorf. The settlers, often escaping religious persecution in their home countries, were mostly from the fertile Silesian region and brought with them vine clippings with which to begin production, thus bringing centuries of accumulated wisdom and viticulture knowledge to Australian shores. With such a rich and storied heritage, a day tour or visit to the Barossa Valley , or some of South Australia ‘s other winery‘s and regions, is both a fantastic way to learn about the heritage of the state, as well as a thoroughly enjoyable wine tasting experience .

For a more rugged experience of outback South Australia suitable for older travellers, heading south to Kangaroo Island , or venturing north through the Flinders Range into the deep outback, is a great way to fully experience the scale and brutal beauty the larger part of the state has to offer. While not as quintessentially ‘ outback ‘ as the Flinders and beyond, Kangaroo Island is a good place to start for a delve into the natural heritage of South Australia. Kangaroo Island is the third largest island in Australia , after Tasmania and Melville Island, and is home to numerous conservation parks for its endemic wildlife, and rich marine ecosystem. A popular destination for travellers to Kangaroo Island is Flinders Chase National Park , where you can spot much of the island‘s wildlife, as well as its remarkable rocks, shaped by the unique environmental conditions on the island .

Remarkable Rocks

Delving deeper into the outback proper, head north from Adelaide city, past Port Augusta until you come upon the Flinders Ranges. The Flinders Ranges National Park marks the gateway into the real Australian outback, running all the way from the South Australian coast to Lake Eyre 600km north. The fascinating indigenous history of the Aboriginal people, impressive geological features, colossal scale, and abundant native wildlife, make the 95,000 hectare ‘Ikara’ Flinders Ranges National Park one of South Australia ‘s most popular tourist destinations, with locations such as Wilpena Pound being truly awe inspiring in their enormous scale. Past the Flinders you’ll eventually make your way to Lake Eyre National Park , surrounded by flat desert as far as the eye can see, Lake Eyre is a rare outback jewel. At 15.2m below sea level, Lake Eyre is the lowest point of the Australian mainland, as well as the largest saltwater lake in the country. Though it only ever fills completely about twice a century, it will often be at least partially filled, attracting birdlife from countless kilometres around and aweing the senses with the scale of this stark landscape. While on an outback tour of South Australia, there are plenty of towns and stops along the way that help give an outback tour with a tour guide, its distinct vibrancy and character. To this end, some towns to consider along your route could include Woomera , Coober Pedy , Oodnadatta , Maree , Burra , Farina , or Curdimurka . Stops along the way also provide a great introduction to some of South Australia‘s other outback adventures, such as the Strzelecki Track , or the Gawler Range .

Wilpena Pound

South Australia ‘s southern shore, and the limestone cliffs around the Great Australia n Bight are as iconic an Australi an landmark as the Sydney Opera House or Uluru, and a must see stop on any South Australia n tour. To this end, one of the best places to take in Australi a ‘s rich southern shores is on a guided tour to the Eyre Peninsula. Located due west of Adelaide on the other side of the Spencer Gulf, the Eyre Peninsula is home to some of South Australia ‘s best coastal landscapes, and is particularly notable for its white sand beaches, and rich marine ecosystem. This marine abundance makes the Eyre Peninsula a popular destination for eco-tourism, with activities like cage diving with the infamous great white shark attracting the curious and daring alike. Aside from the occasional shark, you’ll also find Australia n fur seals, dolphins, whales, and giant cuttlefish , the latter of which congregate in huge numbers to breed annually around the Spencer Gulf. Lincoln National Park is another great spot to take in the Peninsula ‘s natural beauty. Found just south of the town of Port Lincoln , the National Park has plentiful tracks ideal for a guided walking tour, as well as beaches, caves, and spectacular views of the cerulean blue seas. Heading about an hour away from Port Lincoln , you can also find Cummings Monument. Similar to the T welve Apostles , this towering limestone stack rises majestically from the ocean, and makes for one of the best photo opportunities for travellers to the Eyre Peninsula .

Though Odyssey’s portfolio of small group tours for seniors will also take you into the Adelaide hills on the Adelaide tour, to experience Flinders Ranges attractions such as Wilpena pound, or to visit Marree , Lake Eyre, Oodnadatta, the Strzelecki Track or William Creek, you might like to take one of Odyssey’s longer tours into the outback of South Australia.

One of the best way to experience what South Australia has to offer is with a small group tour. Geography, Environment, & Weather

Australia comprises a land area of about 7.692 million square kilometres.

Although this is just five per cent of the world’s land mass (149.45 million square kilometres), Australia is the planet’s sixth largest country after Russia, Canada, China, the United States of America and Brazil. It is also the only one of the largest six nations that is completely surrounded by water.

Australia is the smallest of the world’s continents. It is also the lowest, the flattest and (apart from Antarctica) the driest.

Due to the size of the country, Australia has several different climate zones. The northern section of Australia has a more tropical climate, hot and humid in the summer, and quite warm and dry in the winter, while the southern parts are cooler with mild summers and cool, sometimes rainy winters.

Festivals & Events

One of the highlights on a tour of Adelaide is definitely the annual Adelaide Festival , which is held early March each year.

Eating & Drinking

Australians love their food and this nation is built on a strong history of migration so it’s no wonder that we’ve become famous to the culinary world for our ‘fusion’ food. English and northern European cooking styles have been a part of Australian food since colonisation. Then in the 1970s many Asian cuisines including Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese and Indian began to influence the Australian food landscape, as well as the many southern European and Middle Eastern influences such as Spanish, Balkan, Hungarian, Turkish and Lebanese.

Australians are the second largest beer drinkers in the world! Our beer is essentially a cold lager with a strength of around 5 per cent and the list of breweries is endless, including Tooheys, Carlton Draught, Coopers, Boags, Cascade (which is also the oldest that’s still operating), Hahn, James Squire, Victoria Bitter, Emu Export and Little Creatures.

With many great wine regions on the doorsteps of Australia’s largest capital cities, the international reputation of Australian wine has never been greater, currently being the fourth largest exporter of wine worldwide at around 750 million litres per year.

Health & Safety

Generally speaking, South Australia is safe to travel in even as a mature solo traveller, though always exercise common sense while travelling. When preparing an outback Australia small group tour for seniors, seasonal road conditions are a crucial part for this tour company in its planning work as well as contingency planning for unexpected events in a desert environment on any small group journey .

Electrical Supply

Whenever you travel on your holidays for solo travellers over 60 Australia , it’s always wise to take an appropriate travel adaptor. The electricity supply in Australia runs at 230V and 50Hz. Australia uses the Type I electric plug, so make sure you have the right travel adaptor with you.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travellers?

Intrepid adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognising that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travellers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organised on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travellers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

Tick Travel Insurance Top Cover Review: Features, Pros And Cons

Published: Apr 24, 2024, 1:46am

When comparing Tick Travel Insurance’s pricing against cover levels in key areas, such as emergency medical expenses and trip cancellation, it is safe to argue that it’s a highly competitive player in the market. Travellers will likely appreciate the unlimited medical and $20,000 of cancellation cover available. Plus, the 24-hour medical emergency assistance line may offer added peace of mind.

However, some travellers may feel that Tick Travel Insurance’s Top Policy falls a little short on nice-to-have coverage, including lost luggage and rental car excess limits. Let’s take a closer look at Tick’s top policy offering.

  • Competitive pricing
  • High levels of medical and cancellation cover
  • High customer service rating
  • Credit card fraud not covered
  • Higher levels of luggage cover elsewhere
  • Missed connections not covered

Tick Travel Insurance is owned by Europ Assistance which is a part of the global Generali Group, and underwritten by Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company Limited.

Generali is a large global insurance and asset management provider, while Europ Assistance says it has a presence in over 200 countries, providing comfort and empathy to customers in emergency situations, and an immediate global response.

Tick Travel Insurance’s aim is to make travel insurance simple, covering travellers up to age 100. It offers three levels of domestic travel insurance: Basic, Standard and Top and four types of international travel insurance: Basic, Budget, Standard and Top.

This review will focus on the most comprehensive offering for international travel, being the Tick Travel Insurance Top plan.

Tick Travel Insurance provides domestic and international cover, offering policies for single trips and annual cover for multiple trips in a year. The provider covers adults up to the age of 100, while dependent children, up to 18-years-old at time of purchase, are insured for free on an adult’s policy.

As is typical of travel insurance, its policies cover trip cancellation or curtailment and journey resumption, due to unforeseen circumstances such as injury or illness, as standard. Cover for travel delay is available on the top policies, with a pay out of $100 per completed hour up to $1,000. Valid reasons for claiming include bad weather, a vehicle breakdown or strike, and experiencing a delay of more than 12 hours.

Tick Travel Insurance’s Top plan also includes the following standard benefits that form a part of most comprehensive travel insurance policies:

Lost Luggage

This insurer covers the cost of repairing or replacing your lost, stolen or damaged personal belongings up to $7,500. Take note of the $3,000 sublimit— individual limit— on how much you can claim for devices such as laptops, tablets, phones, video cameras and cameras.

Tick Travel Insurance offers unlimited medical cover, which includes cover for ambulance and emergency surgery, repatriation if necessary, and the death of you, or another person insured on the policy.

While the insurer can cover pre-existing conditions (medical conditions you had before taking out the policy), whether you will be eligible for this cover will depend on the details you provide, outlining the condition and its severity, in the medical screening section of the application.

Is Dental Cover Included?

This insurer also extends its cover to dental treatment, paying out up to $500. This is half of what many providers offer, and bear in mind that you can only claim for dental cover for situations where you need immediate pain relief.

Yes, protection against risks in relation to Covid-19 are covered by Tick Travel Insurance’s Top policy. The insurer accepts related cancellation and disruption claims, as well as medical claims for trips outside of Australia.

What About Pregnancy?

You can claim for an extensive range of pregnancy or childbirth complications up to 31 weeks into your pregnancy with this insurer. These include toxaemia, gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia.

What About Sports And Activities?

From abseiling, to jet skiing and motorcycling, insurance for 90 sports and activities is included automatically with Tick Travel Insurance.

Remember to look out for conditions for claiming. For instance, you will only be covered for three bungee jumps and can only kayak in grades 1 and 2 rapids or lower. Also, some activities may require safety gear that you will need to wear to make a valid claim.

Cover for personal liability and accidental injury only apply to certain activities, as specified in the PDS.

Compared to the competition, Tick Travel Insurance offers relatively decent to high levels of cover across the board for a super competitive price.

When comparing the price of its most comprehensive policy against those of Travel Insurance Direct and Allianz—two providers we rated highly for their comprehensive offering—it comes out on top.

The data below is based on a 28-year-old who needs insurance for Indonesia for seven days.

The above table shows how important it is to shop around for travel insurance, and weigh up your needs with your budget when comparing policies. Tick’s Travel Insurance’s Top policy is only $77, offers considerably more cancellation cover than its competitors for this price, and levies less in excess—the set portion of each claim you must pay.

However, it may not be suitable for those who need higher levels of cover in other areas such as lost luggage and rental car excess. You can find out exactly what a policy includes and excludes in its PDS, which is usually published on the insurer’s website.

You can also find out more about the comprehensive travel insurance providers Forbes Advisor Australia has independently rated the best.

Customers award Tick Travel Insurance a high score of 4 out of 5 stars across 2832 reviews on ProductReview, Australia’s leading consumer opinion site.

Satisfied customers were pleased with how simple they found the process of taking out insurance, and the price of their policy.

However, disgruntled customer complaints were varied. Some speak of technical difficulties with the provider taking payment and not offering a refund instead, trouble accessing their policy documents and rejected claims.

You can also send written correspondence to:

Customer Services Tick Insurance Australia Suite 1.04, Level 1, 19 Harris Street Pyrmont, 2009 Sydney NSW

Additionally, you can send a complaint via post, or email: [email protected] .

Tick Travel Insurance may be considered most suitable for those looking for reasonable to high levels of cover in key areas, for a competitive price. This includes unlimited medical cover and $20,000 for trip cancellation. In other areas cover levels are decent, but may not be suitable for all. Those taking away belongings worth over $7,500 or needing more than $4,000 in rental car excess may want to look elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Where can i find the tick travel insurance pds.

A policy’s product disclosure statement (PDS) details what it covers, any exclusions and limitations or sublimits. It’s crucial that travellers read through this document before deciding whether to purchase the policy.

Typically, an insurer will provide a link to a policy’s PDS on its website. The PDS for Tick Travel Insurance’s policies, including its comprehensive cover, are also online .

What is Tick Travel Insurance’s phone number?

Existing customers and those with service queries can fill in Tick Travel Insurance’s online query form should they need assistance, or contact at [email protected].

For 24-hour emergency assistance customers can call: +612 9333 3963.

How good is Tick travel insurance?

We have awarded Tick Travel Insurance 3.7 out of 5 stars based on factors such as the unlimited amount of medical cover, and high level of cancellation cover, it provides. It also scores highly on customer review site productreview.com.au.

However, customers should note it does not cover you, if you fall victim to credit card fraud while away. Neither are you able to choose the amount of cancellation cover you need as with some other insurers. This may not be of concern, considering $20,000 for cancellation is automatically provided, which is a considerable amount, and Tick Travel Insurance policies are competitively priced.
