How Vaccines Work

Vaccines work by stimulating the body’s immune system to produce protective antibodies against a specific pathogen. This helps to prevent or reduce the severity of the illness if you are exposed to it. By getting vaccinated, travellers can reduce their risk of contracting and spreading diseases, thereby protecting not only themselves but their families and communities as well.

The length of time it takes to become fully vaccinated can vary depending on the specific vaccine and number of doses required. Some vaccines require booster shots to maintain immunity, while others provide long-term protection. For the timely and appropriate delivery of necessary vaccines and pre-travel health advice, we strongly recommend consulting with our medical professionals well in advance of your travel plans.

Traveling abroad can be an exciting adventure, but it also brings potential health risks associated with various destinations. Travel clinics in Canada play a vital role in ensuring that individuals embark on safe and healthy journeys. These specialized healthcare facilities are equipped to provide comprehensive travel health services, including vaccinations, disease prevention advice, and essential travel-related medical consultations. Let's explore the significance of travel clinics, the range of services they offer, and how they contribute to safeguarding the health of Canadian travelers as they explore the world.

Understanding Travel Clinics:

Travel clinics are specialized healthcare centers that focus on providing travelers with tailored health advice and preventive measures before embarking on international trips. These clinics are staffed by healthcare professionals with expertise in travel medicine and infectious diseases. Their primary objective is to ensure travelers are well-prepared and protected against health risks specific to their chosen destinations.

The Role of Travel Clinics:

Travel clinics in Windsor, ON offer a range of essential services that are crucial for international travelers. These include:

  • Destination-Specific Health Advice: Travel clinics provide personalized health advice based on the traveler's itinerary, destination, and individual health history. They assess potential health risks associated with the chosen travel locations and offer guidance on disease prevention and health precautions.
  • Vaccinations and Immunizations: Travel clinics administer necessary vaccinations and immunizations to protect travelers against infectious diseases prevalent in specific regions. Common vaccinations include those for hepatitis A and B, typhoid, yellow fever, meningococcal disease, and more.
  • Prescriptions and Medications: Travel clinics may prescribe medications, such as antimalarial drugs or preventive antibiotics, for travelers venturing into regions with a higher risk of specific infections.
  • Traveler's Health Kits: Clinics may provide travelers with health kits containing items like insect repellents, water purification tablets, and basic medical supplies to manage minor health issues during their trip.
  • Post-Travel Consultations: Travel clinics offer post-travel consultations to assess travelers' health upon their return and address any potential health concerns related to their trip.

Preparing for Safe Travel:

Travel clinics play a pivotal role in preparing individuals for safe and healthy international travel. By following these steps, travelers can make the most of their travel clinic visit:

  • Plan Ahead: Schedule a visit to the travel clinic well in advance of the trip, as some vaccinations may require multiple doses over a period of time.
  • Share Travel Details: Provide the travel clinic with detailed information about the travel itinerary, including destinations, travel dates, and planned activities.
  • Review Immunization History: Bring a record of previous vaccinations to help the travel clinic assess any missing or expired immunizations.
  • Seek Additional Advice: Inquire about specific health risks in the destination countries and ask for advice on preventing foodborne illnesses, insect-borne diseases, and other travel-related health concerns.

Special Considerations for High-Risk Travelers:

Certain individuals may require additional considerations when planning international travel. Travel clinics in Windsor, ON can cater to the needs of high-risk travelers, which may include:

  • Pregnant Women: Pregnant women need careful assessment to ensure their travel plans do not pose any risks to their health or the health of their unborn child.
  • Elderly Travelers: Older adults may have specific health concerns that need to be addressed before embarking on international trips.
  • Immunocompromised Individuals: Individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS or undergoing cancer treatment, require special precautions to safeguard their health during travel.

Less expensive COVID-19 PCR tests being offered for cross-border travellers

A Windsor-based bio-tech company is offering less expensive COVID-19 PCR tests for cross-border travellers now that the U.S. land border slated to re-open to fully vaccinated travellers on Nov. 8.

Audacia Bio Science said the requirement for a negative PCR test result to enter or re-enter Canada has become a significant impediment to cross border travel between Windsor and Detroit, so they are providing another option.

“Having to get a PCR test to come into Canada is very prohibitive for a lot of people,” said Dr. Phillip Ola, Chief Executive Officer of Audacia Bio Science.

The typical cost of a PCR test in Canada ranges from $150 - $300, a price point which could be too much for many people looking to travel for business, family visits or day trips.

“The idea is to make it more accessible for a lot more people to travel in and out of Detroit,” Ola said.

Audacia Bio Science, in partnership with RapidBio laboratories, has launched Assure COVID Travel Clinics, offering PCR tests as low as $75 a test for a same day result.

“I think when you haven’t seen family for a while and there’s urgent things you need to do you will spend that to get over there for a day and get back,” Ola said.

There are three locations, one near Detroit Metro Airport, one off Jefferson Avenue in Indian Village and the other in Mexican Town.

“All testing is performed in our locations in Detroit (close to both the tunnel and the bridge),” said Ola. “For tests performed before noon results will be available the same day. For tests completed after 12 noon results will be available the following day. For an additional fee we can also offer test results within a 30-minute window.”

A rapid PCR test for urgent cases is available for $150.

Dr. Stephen Bartol, a partner with Audacia Bio Science, said the tests with their Michigan laboratory partner offer fast and reliable results, giving them the assurance needed to make cross border travel both safe and convenient.

“We recognize that this solution may not be for everyday tripper, nor does it address the expensive PCR pricing in Canada, but rest assured we are collaborating with both government and local stakeholders to further reduce the testing burden,” said Bartol.

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens said $75 may still be a lot for many people and he hopes people won’t abuse the assessment centre when the land border reopens to non-essential travel on Monday.

“We’re hopeful that this kind of rule doesn’t actually affect the assessment centre for those who actually need a test because of a COVID exposure,” he said.

Windsor West MP Brian Masse said he would like to see the Canadian government pay for the tests, like the United States government does.

He said the federal government has not been transparent enough.

“That’s why there needs to be more openness and accountability,” Masse said. “That’s why we need the government to come forward and say ‘well we need continue this policy for this reason because of the science.’”

With people coming to Canada from all over the world, Dr. Ola said antigen testing would be a smarter testing strategy with travellers taking an antigen test before heading across the border.

“Three to four days later, you should take another antigen test just to make sure what you did over there, you did not get infected and bring it back,” Ola said.

Travel vaccinations

Measles cases are increasing worldwide.

Before travelling, check that you and your family have received the recommended measles vaccinations.

Do not travel if you have symptoms of measles or have been in contact with someone with measles.

If you develop symptoms of measles after your return to Canada, call a health care provider right away.

Global Measles Notice

When travelling outside Canada, you may be at risk for a number of vaccine preventable illnesses.

You should consult a health care provider or visit a travel health clinic preferably six weeks before you travel. This is an opportunity to:

  • review your immunization history
  • make sure your provincial/territorial vaccination schedule is up-to-date
  • discuss any trip-related health concerns you may have
  • assess your needs based on where you plan to travel and what you plan to do

You may need additional vaccinations depending on your age, planned travel activities and local conditions. Preventing disease through vaccination is a lifelong process.

Use the reference below to determine which vaccinations may be recommended or required for your destination.

Vaccination recommendations by destination

Yellow fever vaccination.

Some countries require proof that you have received a yellow fever vaccination before allowing you to enter the country. Consult an embassy or consulate of your destination country in Canada for up-to-date information on its entry and exit requirements before you travel abroad.

Other countries may require you to have been vaccinated for yellow fever if you have passed through an area where yellow fever may occur .

Proof of vaccination must be documented on an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis . You must carry the original certificate with you.

In Canada, the vaccination is only given at designated yellow fever vaccination centres .

Immunization records

Welcome to our travel clinic where our experienced travel nurse will be able to offer you up-to-date advice on vaccines when travelling abroad.

If you require any vaccinations or need to discuss your requirements relating to foreign travel you will need to make an appointment in our travel clinic to discuss your travel arrangements. Please note, we do not offer telephone advice.

It is important to make your initial appointment as early as possible,  at least 6-8 weeks  before you travel, as many vaccinations need to be given over a course of a few weeks or months to ensure you have full protection before travelling and the vaccinations you require might need to be ordered in for you.

Appointments can be made up to 3 months in advance and our receptionists will be happy to book these but are not able to give travel advice. As the travel clinic is an additional service that we offer, it does not have infinite capacity. Therefore, if you require an appointment at short notice or if we are unable to offer you an appointment, you will have to make arrangements at an alternative clinic.

Not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS and some therefore incur a charge. Please see below for our list of prices. Those vaccines marked with an asterisk are free of charge to Woodcote Medical NHS patients, depending on timing of travel, what vaccines have been taken in the past and patient requirements. Non-Woodcote Medical patients are welcome to use our Travel Clinic, but they will be charged for all vaccines.

It is important to make the initial appointment as early as possible  - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.
