About this blog: We have been exploring Darjeeling ever since we started travelling. We have also blogged about this place for long. This Darjeeling Travel Guide was written sometime back. We have now updated this Darjeeling travel guide with all the latest information and required to plan a Darjeeling trip. This guide might help you when you visit the “Queen of Hills” and make you plan a perfect Darjeeling tour.

Darjeeling, the quaint hill station located in the northern part of West Bengal is undoubtedly one of our favourite destinations of all times. To be honest, we can never get enough of Darjeeling . A land of breathtaking beauty surrounded by rolling green tea plantations along with the majestic Kanchenjunga ranges towering above the skyline has earned it the moniker of Queen of Hills .

The eternal beauty and the quaint Victorian charm of the place are enough to lure travellers and tourists alike. And the cherry on the top is the adorable Darjeeling toy train that whistles its way through the mountains. Which other hill stations have so many beauties rolled in one!

Darjeeling Trip Plan | About Darjeeling

Darjeeling is located at an altitude of about 6710 feet and is one of the most beautiful destinations in India. The name Darjeeling came from two Tibetan words ‘ dorje ’ meaning and ‘ ling ‘ meaning land. So Darjeeling literally means ‘the land of thunderbolt’.

Previous to its acquisition by the British East India Company in 1835, Darjeeling was a part of Sikkim (Sikkim was an independent kingdom then) and also of Nepal for a brief period of time.

Agni and Amrita in Darjeeling

During February 1829, a British Officer Caption Llyod spent a few days in Darjeeling. The place was then known as the “Old Gorkha Station of Darjeeling”. The place was nothing like what it is today. It was a deserted region with dense forests and mountains. Caption Llyod realized that Darjeeling can become a great sanatorium or health resort for the British officers.

What is the Best Time to Visit Darjeeling?

Usually, Darjeeling has two main peak seasons for tourists – March to May and October to November. This is the time when Darjeeling gets the maximum footfall of tourists. When you want to plan your Darjeeling trip, entirely depends on what you want to experience at Darjeeling. Here I would mention briefly about the seasons in Darjeeling.

March to May (Spring and Summer)

This is one of the best times to visit Darjeeling. The weather remains pleasantly cool. After all, one of the main reasons for planning a Darjeeling trip is to beat the summer heat in the plains. The sky also remains clear giving a clear view of the Kanchenjunga ranges. But this is also a peak tourist season and Darjeeling will be full of local tourists.

March and April is the spring season and also the blooming season of rhododendrons.

June to September (Monsoon)

Monsoon usually starts by mid-June and lasts until September. During the monsoon, there are chances of landslides and some of the roads might be closed due to rains. Darjeeling, however, looks immensely beautiful and romantic during the rains, though you won’t get any mountain views as the weather remains cloudy most of the time. Also, tourism is low at this time and you get to see an uncrowded and relatively serene Darjeeling.

Honestly, monsoon is one of our favourite times to visit Darjeeling . We get rooms at cheaper rates, the roads are empty and the mist and clouds that envelope the roads make Darjeeling completely mesmerizing.

Darjeeling in monsoon

October to November (Autumn)

Autumn is also a good time to visit Darjeeling. The weather remains pleasant, the nature is vibrant and the skies are clear. You would get great views of the snow-covered peaks during this time. Bur again, this is a peak season and Darjeeling will be full of tourists, both local and international.

December to February (Winter)

Winter in Darjeeling is extremely cold and the higher altitudes of experience snowfall in December. Tiger Hill, located only 11 km from Darjeeling also experiences snowfall during the winter. Darjeeling gets fewer tourists during this time. If you plan to visit Darjeeling during the winter, do carry woolens with you.

Winter is our favourite time for Darjeeling tour. We love to enjoy the winters of hill stations and Darjeeling never disappoints us in this matter. Also, Darjeeling oranges are quite famous and we get that during the wintertime.

Having said these, you cannot really predict the weather on the hills. At one time, it is sunny and bright and in the next moment, it can become cloudy and foggy.

How to Reach Darjeeling?

The nearest airport is the Bagdogra Airport and the nearest broad gauge railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP). I have mentioned broad-gauge railways because you can reach Darjeeling from NJP by the famous toy train.

From NJP, you will get both shared jeeps as well as rented vehicles to reach Darjeeling. From Bagdogra Airport, you will get rented cabs to reach Darjeeling. Shared jeeps are also available from Siliguri Main Bus Stand towards Darjeeling. Buses are also available from Siliguri towards Darjeeling, but I would recommend you to travel by the shared sumos instead of buses.

Pro Tip: If you are coming from abroad, you will need some sort of a visa that can be applied for online, or at the embassy. For example, The India evisa for Canada citizens is available online.

Darjeeling is a small hilly town, but there are a number of places to visit in Darjeeling that can be accessed by travelling a short distance. Darjeeling town is small, but Darjeeling district spans across 3,000 sq km. While there are a number of places to visit in Darjeeling and several attractions around the town, you can also visit Kurseong and Kalimpong, two other hill stations that are also quite beautiful and charming. Here I have discussed some of the must-visit tourist attractions in Darjeeling.

1. Tiger Hill

Sunrise from Tiger Hill Darjeeling

I personally feel that a Darjeeling trip can never be completed without watching the sunrise at Tiger Hill . Located at the highest point in Darjeeling at an altitude of 2,590 m, Tiger Hill is located about 11 km from Darjeeling town. If you visit Tiger Hill in the day, it is just another viewpoint and you will hardly see any tourist there. But early in the morning, the place is full of a long queue of cars and people waiting for the sun to rise. Tiger Hill is now internationally famous for its magnificent sunrise view above the Kanchenjunga and other eastern Himalayan ranges.

There is a watchtower at Tiger Hill from where you will get a sweeping view of the mountain ranges.  It is an amazing experience to see the first rays of sun falling on the snow-clad ranges of the Kanchenjunga and Everest. The sky gradually changes colour from golden yellow to orange as the sun rises up the horizon.

The best time to get clear views of sunrise is during autumn and winter. But the weather in Darjeeling can be quite unpredictable and a sudden cloud can totally obstruct the sunrise view. Even otherwise, Tiger Hill is a great place to visit in Darjeeling to soak in the Himalayan beauty.

2. Batasia Loop and War Memorial

Gorkha War Memorial at Batasia Loop

Batasia Loop is located on the Hill Cart Road and is about 5 km from Darjeeling town and is one of the major attractions of your Darjeeling trip . The Batasia Loop is a gigantic railway loop where the Darjeeling toy train takes a 360-degree turn just after Ghum . You can get a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga ranges and the entire landscape from here. There is a well-maintained eco-garden at Batasia Loop along with proper seating arrangements from where you can sit down and see the wonderful views.

The War Memorial is located at the centre of the Batasia Loop. The War Memorial was opened in 1995 to pay homage to the Gorkha soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation. Just in the middle, there is a 3-metre bronze statue of a Gorkha soldier paying homage. Outside the Batasia Loop, there is a small market area selling curios, bags, hats, and other decorative items. You can visit Batasia Loop after a trip to the Tiger Hill to watch the sunrise.

Timings: Everyday 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM

3. Darjeeling Mall or Chowrasta

Darjeeling Mall or Chowrasta

Darjeeling Mall or Chowrasta is the centre of Darjeeling town and is the most happening place in the entire town. It is a flat piece of land converted into a pedestrian-only zone and no traffic is allowed at the Mall. There are seating arrangements around the Mall where you can relax and have a steaming hot cup of Darjeeling tea. A number of shops are located in the Mall area including tea bars, curio shop, book shops and more. You can stroll around the Mall leisurely or else simply sit on the bench and see Darjeeling come alive in front of you. Horse ride is also available around the Mall at a prefixed rate.

There are a few important places to visit around Darjeeling Mall. You can take a walk around the Mall Road and visit a few of the important and heritage places in Darjeeling. There is also an open-air auditorium and stage where many functions and cultural programmes take place. The Mall or Chowrasta is actually the social fabric of Darjeeling town.

4. Darjeeling Zoo and HMI

Darjeeling Zoo

Darjeeling Zoo or Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is one of the attractive places to visit in Darjeeling. Covering a vast area of 27 hectares, the zoo is the only specialized zoo for the conservation breeding programs of rare Himalayan species like the red panda, snow leopards, Tibetan wolf, Himalayan Black bear and other endangered species.

The Darjeeling Zoo is the largest high altitude zoo in India and covers an area of 67.5 acres at an average altitude of 7,000ft.

The Himalayan Mountain Institute or the HMI is said to be a pilgrimage for mountaineers and climbing enthusiast. It is also a must-visit place for all mountain lovers. It has a museum with mountaineering displays and many expedition artefacts. HMI is located in the same complex as the zoo and both of these can be visited together. Whenever we go for a Darjeeling trip, we make it a point to visit HMI. Just staring at the complex and reading its slogan “May you climb from peak to peak” gives us a feeling of happiness.

You can occasionally hear Buddhist chants and prayer at the temple. The place is indeed full of serenity and you can feel it once you are there.

7. Happy Valley Tea Estate

Happy Valley Tea Estate - Tea tourism

How can your Darjeeling trip be complete without visiting a tea garden? Happy Valley Tea Estate is the best place where you can get a first-hand experience of tea gardens as well as how the tea leaves actually make way to your cup. The tea estate was established in 1854 and was known as the Wilson Tea Estate . Later the estate was renamed as Happy Valley Tea Estate. The estate covers an area of about 110 hectares and is one of the highest tea estates in West Bengal. Most of the tea bushes here are more than a century old!

Located below the Hill Cart Road, one of the best times to visit Happy Valley Tea Estate is during the plucking and processing season between March and October. During this time, an employee with take you around the tea factory and explain the process of withering, rolling, fermenting and drying and also explain how black, green and white tea is extracted from the same tea leaves. At the end of the tour, tea tasting is also offered. There is also a tea boutique from where you can but best quality Darjeeling Tea is grown at the estate.

Timings: The Tea estate and factory are open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM from Tuesday to Saturday. The factory remains closed between November to February as tea plucking does not take place in winter.

8. Observatory Hill and the Mahakal Temple

Mahakal Temple on Observatory Hill

The Observatory Hill and Mahakal Temple is located just behind the Mall. The Mahakal Temple is located at the summit of the Observatory Hill. As you walk around the Mall Road, you will see a flight of stairs leading up to the hill and the temple. It is believed that a Buddhist monastery named Dorjeling Monastery once stood at the place where the Mahakal Temple stands.

The original monastery was built in the year 1765 by the Lama Dorje Rinzing and it was destroyed in 1815 during the Gorkha invasion. Later the Mahakal Temple was built at the place and the monastery was rebuilt at about 1.5 km downhill from the Chowrasta.

At Mahakal Temple, you will not only hear the chants of Hindu prayers but will also hear the Buddhist monks reading scriptures. It is a beautiful communion of Hinduism and Buddhism, just as we saw at Bhaktapur Durbar Square in Nepal .

Timings: From sunrise to sunset.

9. Ghum Monastery

Ghum Monastery Darjeeling - Places to visit in Darjeeling

One of the most magnificent monasteries near Darjeeling is the Ghum Monastery , also known as the Yiga Choeling Monastery . Located at Ghum at an altitude of 7400 ft and 8 km from Darjeeling town, it is one of the oldest Tibetan monasteries to be built in Darjeeling area. The major attraction of the monastery is the 15 ft high statue of Maitreya Buddha or future Buddha.

It is believed that the clay to make the statue of the Buddha was brought all the way from Tibet. In front of the statue, there are two huge oil lamps that are kept burning all the time throughout the year. The monastery also houses a number of rare Buddhist manuscripts including a 108-volume Kangyur – The Tibetan Buddhist Gospel.

Tenzing and Gombu Rock

The Tenzing Rock is a naturally formed huge rock in Darjeeling and is named after the famous Tenzing Norgay . Darjeeling Toy Train

Darjeeling Toy Train - Things to do in Darjeeling

The Toy Train ride or Darjeeling Himalayan Railways is undoubtedly one of the major attractions of Darjeeling and should be a part of your Darjeeling tour. DHR is the first mountain railway in India opened in 1881 to connect Darjeeling with the plains in Siliguri. This mountain railways is said to be one of the best examples of mountain railways and definitely an outstanding engineering feat achieved during those times. The DHR has been accorded the UNESCO World Heritage site status.

If you have the time, the best way to experience the Darjeeling Toy Train is to take a ride from NJP to Darjeeling. It is a long ride almost taking a day, but the ride will be one of life kind of experience. If you do not wish to venture in this journey, you can take a toy train ride from Darjeeling to Ghum or Kurseong.

Darjeeling Tea

Things to do in Darjeeling - visit a Darjeeling Tea Garden

How can I probably not talk about Darjeeling Tea while writing about Darjeeling? There is almost no doubt that Darjeeling is one of the finest producers of tea in the world. There are a number of tea gardens and estates in Darjeeling district producing some of the finest qualities of tea. A packet of Darjeeling tea is one of the prized souvenirs of India that you can take home.

The cup is actually waiting for you. Take a sip and enjoy the aroma and taste of fresh and pure Darjeeling Tea. Well, that is enough of tea advertisements! Let me now tell you where you can have tea in Darjeeling. There are several outlets, tea lounges and tea bars from where you can taste Darjeeling Tea. Personally, our favourite is the Darjeeling tea at Nathmulls on Darjeeling Mall and Glenarys on Nehru Road. We also love the tea served by the roadside vendors.

Golden Tips Tea Lounge

Some of the best places to have tea during your Darjeeling trip are

  • Nathmull’s Tea and Sunset Lounge
  • House of Tea
  • Golden Tips Tea Lounge
  • Afternoon Tea at Windermere

You can buy your packet of tea from any of these places. But I would suggest you buy Darjeeling tea from places that would provide you with an invoice and not from any roadside stalls. Happy Valley Tea Estate is another good place to buy Darjeeling Tea.

What are the Best Places to eat in Darjeeling Trip?

Breakfast platter at Keventers

Darjeeling has a unique mixture of Bengali, Nepali and Tibetan population. This is reflected well in the food and cuisine of Darjeeling. Added to this is the English influence. So overall, food in Darjeeling is simply something that we can die for.

Delicious and crisp English breakfast is quite common in Darjeeling. Keventers and Glenarys are just the places to have a proper English breakfast. Bacon, sausages, omelettes, eggs with sunny side up, sandwiches along with fresh Darjeeling Tea – who can say no to such food? For the health-conscious, the oil can be a turn-off though.

Momo

Darjeeling is also famous for momos, thukpas and Tibetan and Nepali dishes. There are restaurants serving Indian and Continental cuisines. In short, you will not be disappointed in Darjeeling regarding food!

For detailed information, you can read our article on the best places to eat in Darjeeling .

How much does it cost to travel in Darjeeling?

Monastery near Darjeeling

Darjeeling can be quite easy on the pocket if you wish so. A typical cost of travelling in Darjeeling is given:

Sightseeing costs in Darjeeling by car are fixed. To reduce costs, you can share with other like-minded travellers. You can also walk around and explore Darjeeling on foot. We usually do that on our visits to Darjeeling. You can also hop on to the taxis that the locals use for commuting and visit from one point to the other, and then walk the remaining way.

Trekking permit at Sandakphu-Phalut will come at a fixed cost and so does guide and potter. Permit fee for Singalila National Park is only INR 100. You will get the details of the trek in our blog on Sandakphu Trek .

Shopping in Darjeeling Trip | Darjeeling Travel Guide

Habeeb Mullick and Sons at Chowrasta

Darjeeling, like most of the hill stations, is a shopper’s paradise. And one of my favourite thing to do in Darjeeling trip is window shopping! These days, you will get almost everything in Darjeeling town. However, you would probably want to buy Darjeeling Tea, antiques and jewellery, handicrafts and curio, woolen from Darjeeling.

Some of the popular handicraft items that you can buy from Darjeeling includes Tibetan masks, Thangkas, Khukris (curved Gorkha knives having decorative handles), curios and traditional jewelleries and showpieces. Stoles, woollen sweaters, jackets, caps and pashmina shawls are also widely sold.

There are many old shops and boutique shops at either side of the Nehru Road leading up to the Mall.  Nepal Curio House is one of our favourite places to hunt curio items, masks and thangkas. A Biswa Bangla outlet has also opened at Nehru Road that sells Bengal handicraft items. Another place that I would like to mention is Das Studio . You will get photography items and some old and rare photographs of Darjeeling and the mountains here. Check out the old Darjeeling postcards here.

Das Studio Darjeeling - Travel Guide

Darjeeling Mall is also dotted with a number of shops. I would like to mention about Oxford Book Stores, Habeeb Mullick & Sons (one of the best places for curios), Golden Tips and Nathmull’s at Chowrasta.

Mall Road has temporary shops with hawkers selling woollen and dress items. Bargain well when buying from these markets.

Darjeeling Toy Train Souvenir

Chowk Bazar at lower Darjeeling is a bustling market where you can get any types of household items, clothing items, bags, footwear, grocery and spices. It is infact the local market of Darjeeling town. Prices are relatively cheaper at Chowk Bazar, but I cannot guarantee the quality for items like dresses, shoes and bags.

If you want to buy authentic Tibetan handicrafts, then you should head towards the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre off the Lebong Cart Road. You will get handmade Tibetan carpets, scarves, clothes, handicrafts, thangkas and many more made by the local artisans.

Day trips from Darjeeling | Darjeeling Travel Guide

You can make day trips from Darjeeling to Mirik (known for Mirik Lake) and Kurseong. We recommend to hire a car from Chowk Bazar or Club side taxi Stand to visit these places.

You can also take a day trip to Takdah , Tinchuley and Lamahatta from Darjeeling.

Darjeeling is also the nearest town to Maneybhanjan, the base camp of Sandakphu trek.

Thank you for stopping by our blog. There are a few good hotels near the Mall area which you can consider – Seven Seas near Keventers, The Bellevue on the Mall Road, Hotel Sunflower on the Mall, Dekeling Hotel. You can also consider staying at Darjeeling Tourist Lodge. Its about 7-8 mins walk from Mall, but is quite good.

Since childhood I’ve witnessed the gradual change in climate, education, culture, society, economy, politics and religions, and recently a bit of business. And when I take the flight retrospectively in introspective mood,I feel sad to land back momentarily. But when I see the flood of tourists with a lot of excitement and sunny faces and the depiction of Darjeeling, my aesthetic sense gets rejuvenated. Salute to the blog writer for the concern shown for sanitation and request to the upcoming tourists not to litter. Welcome for further minute details.

Frequently Asked Questions about Darjeeling Packages

Q) How is the road from Bagdogra to Darjeeling?

A: Bagdogra is the nearest airport to Darjeeling. The route from Bagdogra to Darjeeling is a hilly drive of about 95 km, with some small curves, but the road is in good condition. The drive can be covered easily in about 3 hours.

Q) How many days are enough for Darjeeling?

A: You can easily cover all the important Darjeeling tourist places, as well as excursions to Mirik and a visit to a tea estate, in a stay of 2 or 3 days.

Q) What should I wear in Darjeeling?

A: You should pack clothes according to the Darjeeling weather. Here are some suggestions on what to wear as per the Darjeeling temperature and weather –

If you are visiting in March – April, the days will be pleasant but mornings and evenings could be chilly. Carry leg-covering clothing like jeans and trousers, or salwars, along with shoes and socks. Carry a windcheater, 2-3 light woolens and a shawl. If you plan to go out for dinner, then you could pack a cap or muffler too. For a trip during the months of October and November, you should expect the Darjeeling weather to be similar to that of March-April and pack accordingly. Later in November the town can get a lot colder so add a few more woolens.

During the summer months of May and June, Darjeeling temperature will be warm and you can dress light during the day with shorts, T shirts, capris, jeans etc. But do pack something woolen for the evening, like a jacket or sweater. Also carry shoes in case you plan to walk around and do excursions. You should pack similarly for travelling during the monsoon (July to September), but add rain wear and perhaps a windcheater.

If you are travelling to Darjeeling in winter (December to February), expect the Darjeeling temperate to range between 10 degrees and 0 degrees. Pack heavy woolens, thermals, woolen cap, gloves, etc.

Q) What is Darjeeling famous for?

A: Darjeeling is most famous for its narrow gauge Toy Train, known formally as the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, and of course for the world famous Darjeeling tea that is grown here.

Q) What should I buy in Darjeeling?

A: You can bring back a lot of souvenirs and purchases from Darjeeling, such as different kinds of Darjeeling tea, woolen items like shawls, scarves, hats, and jackets, Tibetan products and handicrafts, etc. Book lovers can also buy books from the Oxford Bookstore in Darjeeling.

Popular darjeeling tour packages, darjeeling tour packages faqs.

Q. Which is the best time to visit Darjeeling? A. The spring and the fall months are the best to visit Darjeeling. The spring season in Darjeeling lasts between March and April when the weather oscillates from pleasant to nippy. You have clear blue skies and occasional strong winds. But it is the time of the year when the hill station’s abundant magnolia and rhododendron jungles are in flower, splashing the wilderness in a riot of pinks and purples. It is the best time of the year to go on treks and venture inside the pristine Singalila National Park and take in a grand panorama of the Everest and Khangchendzonga. You get good views from Tiger Hill too, considering you travel to it at the break of dawn to view the sunrise over the majestic Himalayan ranges. You can also choose an autumn visit to Darjeeling between October and November when the temperature ranges between 6 and 18 degree Celsius. The monsoon rains are now a thing of past and fall is slowly rolling in. The mist has cleared once more and you can view the Himalayan ranges in their full glory. The treks open up once more and tourist activity begins to set in. Hotel prices can be bullish at this time of the year. Q. What is Tiger Hill in Darjeeling famous for? A. To catch a sunrise over the Tiger Hills in Darjeeling is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It opens you up to the fascinating 250 kilometre stretch of the Himalayas which comprises Khangchendzonga at 28,208 foot and Mount Everest at 29,028 foot among the two of the five highest peaks in the world. Wake up in the small hours and ride a jeep to the Tiger Hill to behold this spectacle. The Hill at an elevation of 8497 foot is about 11 kilometre south of Darjeeling above Ghum. Crammed with tourists, come in for the best views in either spring or fall. Jeeps depart from Darjeeling town centre at about 04:00 am, leading to endless traffic snarls. You could even sign up for a sunrise trip which makes stops at the picturesque Batasia Loop and a monastery in Ghum as you wind your way back, down the hill and into Darjeeling. Q. Which is a popular tea estate in Darjeeling? A. The Happy Valley Tea Estate, established in 1854, sprawled on the northwestern tip of Darjeeling is a great place to gain some insight on the tea-making process. Here you will be familiarised with the method of producing tea, from plucking, drying to processing. You can watch the process first-hand between March and November, the tea plucking and producing season. A friendly staff would usher you around the estate and show you the workings of a tea factory. Take in the exotic aromas and understand the process of production, right from withering, rolling, fermenting to drying. It is a great opportunity to taste an array of special teas, from black, green to white and also to find out that all the brews, regardless of the their colour, come from the same tea leaf. Head up to Bhanu Bhawan in Darjeeling town centre and ride the free shuttle van that takes you about a kilometre northwest where you need to turn off on Lebong Cart Road and then down a zigzag track for half a kilometre to the tea plantation. The van rides are available from 09:30 am onwards. Q. Which is the nearest airport to Darjeeling? A. As you scour Darjeeling packages , you must remember the proximity of the hill station to the nearest airport in the state. The Bagdogra International Airport in Siliguri is the airport closest to Darjeeling about 70 kilometre away. The drive through the winding hilly roads takes around 2.5 hours. There is a pre-paid taxi booth at the airport run by the Siliguri Metropolitan Police open till until 07:00 pm, and this is the only form of official private transport facility available from the airport other than the state buses that ply from the nearby bus stand. Q. Which is the nearest railway station to Darjeeling? A. There is no dearth of Darjeeling tour packages , but very few that do justice to the destination and the commute it warrants. The New Jalpaiguri Railway Station which serves Siliguri city and is the port of entry to the seven north-eastern states, is the closest railway station to Darjeeling at about 93 kilometre. A taxi ride from NJP to Darjeeling takes about 3 hours and 15 minutes. There are ample shared jeeps and taxis at the New Jalpaiguri station available at a decent frequency to get you to Darjeeling. Or you can head to the nearest bus stand in Siliguri to avail a bus to Darjeeling. Else if you have more time at your hands opt for the toy train journey between Siliguri and Darjeeling that takes around 7 hours skirting brilliant mountain scenery all along the Hill Carter Road. Q. What is the route of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway? A. Make sure one of the Darjeeling travel packages you settle for comes with a ride aboard this world-heritage toy train. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway came into being in 1881 and is about 88 kilometre long winding its way through New Jalpaiguri along Hill Carter Road all the way to Darjeeling. In its run it scales the 328 foot of NJP to 7,218 foot of Darjeeling through its diesel locomotives. From Darjeeling, the toy train services extend to Ghum, the highest railway station in the country. The prominent stops on the NJP to Darjeeling route aboard the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway include Siliguri Junction, Rangtong, Sukna, Tindharia, Mahanadi, Sonada, Tung, Ghum, and finally Darjeeling. Q. What is the local mode of transport in Darjeeling? A. While walking remains the most popular way of commuting short distances, there is no long lineup of auto-rickshaws and taxis to take you from one part of the hill station to the other. In fact there are several areas around the Mall (Chowrasta) that are accessible only to pedestrians. You can, however, rely on reserved or shared taxis and public buses for covering distances within the city limits. The shares taxis are a cheaper mode of commuting and connect Darjeeling to Gangtok, Kalimpong, New Jalpaiguri, Mirik, Siliguri, and Kurseong. Shared taxis are typically made of jeeps that accommodate about 10 passengers on a single ride. Q. Are there sufficient ATMs in Darjeeling? A. You better be cash-rich if you are travelling within Darjeeling and the surrounding Kalimpong, Ghum or Mirik. The few ATMs around are either cash-starved or very simply out of order. Some that are in mint condition have long queues outside of them. So, it is better to rely on your cash reserves for your travels within Darjeeling and in its vicinity. Some places have now begun to accept e-wallets, but not so much cards, whether it is credit or debit cards. And in local markets too and at restaurants you are expected to make your payment in cash. Q. What is the local language of Darjeeling? A. While Bengali is the official and easily the most widely-spoken language of the hill station, Nepali has emerged as a close second among the prevailing languages. The refugee population largely speaks Tibetan outside of other local languages of the tribal population of Darjeeling. But since it also thrives on tourism and has catered to tourists for a significant period of time, and also owing to its colonial heritage, English is spoken and understood by the local population. Particularly at its tourists centres, restaurants and hotels, English is easily followed. Q. From where can I avail a taxi in Darjeeling? A. Head to the Upper Club-side taxi stand which is right below the Planter’s Club on Gandhi Road. There are kiosks here operated by the local taxi association which offer private taxis at regulated rates. The other point is the Lower Club-side taxi stand on Laden-La Road adjacent to the Gandhi Road traffic control junction, and the Motor Stand on Lebong Cart Road close to Chowk Bazaar. The shared taxis can be flagged down from any point on the road and they will stop for you only if they have any vacant seats on-board. Shared taxis are available between 07:00 am and 03:00 pm. Any big luggage you might be carrying will be tied to the roof of the vehicle.

Darjeeling

Visit Darjeeling, India

  • Accommodation
  • Things to do

Driving along the ribbons of road that lead to Darjeeling, past gravity-defying hillside settlements and tea plantations, you can feel quite the adventurer. The spiny ridges of the Himalaya poke out above, with the sharp peak of Kangchenjunga dominating the skyline.

It can also be somewhat of a surprise, when you arrive in the hill station, that it feels rather international. The British Raj left behind mock-Tudor homes and Gothic churches, which sit alongside Buddhist temples and shrines from the time when the region was part of Nepal. The markets are bright with textiles, woven by the hundreds of Tibetans who live here in exile and sell wares alongside Bhutanese merchants. Pause to take stock, and you’re likely to be offered a cup of spiced chai by one of the Bengali tea-stall vendors.

Darjeeling

The hill was once the location for Darjeeling’s first Buddhist monastery and a sacred cave for Hindus. You’ll now find Mahakal Temple, a bright collaboration of Hindu deities and flickering strings of Buddhist prayer flags.

From the temple, you can walk down Chowrasta Mall (The Mall to locals), which is lined with wooden-fronted bookshops, tea emporiums and cafés. Bhotia Market runs off into a side street and is where you can pick up hand-knitted Tibetan socks, hats and gloves.

If you’re keen to shop, we also recommend visiting the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre. You can watch craftspeople wool spinning and carpet weaving, with the money from any purchases you make going directly to a rehabilitation initiative for displaced Tibetans.

To the north of the town is the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, founded by Tenzing Norgay. It houses a small museum dedicated to mountain climbing, as well as a display of photographs and memorabilia from Norgay’s summit of Everest with Edmund Hillary in 1953. The museum includes a model of the entire Everest massif, which shows how close in height Everest, K2 and Kangchenjunga are when you look at it from above.

For views of the real Everest range, you can take an early morning trip up Tiger Hill , a small plateau about an hour’s drive from Darjeeling. Below the plateau, the valleys widen into a natural amphitheatre, with the Everest range spread out almost as perfectly as the Mountaineering Institute’s model.

Toy Train, Darjeeling

Arguably, Darjeeling’s most popular attraction is the Darjeeling Mountain Railway , one of India’s last remaining toy train routes. The best way to experience this engineering masterpiece is to ride to Ghoom, forty minutes away, on the (usually) daily steam locomotive. The train pauses at the Bastia Loop along the way, where you can disembark to admire the smoking engine and views back toward Darjeeling.

Darjeeling’s tea plantations

Darjeeling tea is often described as the champagne of teas, due to its light shade and floral aroma. Ever since an Englishman (records disagree on who) brought across seeds from China in the mid-19th century, tea has been the region’s main crop. You’ll see the neat rows of squat tea bushes as you drive around, with many plantations now open to visitors.

Best time to visit Darjeeling

There are two main seasonal windows for visiting Darjeeling. Arguably the best is October to November, when the temperatures are comfortably cool and, all importantly, the skies are usually clear enough to see the Himalaya. The second runs from late February to May, when the cold winter has passed and temperatures begin to warm again. June tends to welcome the monsoon, which lasts until early September, so we don’t recommend travel to Darjeeling at this time.

The true cost of traveling out of state for an abortion is more than financial

While kari lake and others have painted abortion travel as simple road trips, the reality is not so simple, by nicole karlis, published april 19, 2024 5:15am (edt), updated april 19, 2024 8:06pm (edt).

In June 2022, when the U.S. Supreme Court's Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade , which provided Americans with a constitutional right to abortion, it changed what options Hanz Dismer had in the state of Missouri.

While abortion access was already severely limited in Missourit, minutes after the Supreme Court’s decision was released the state Attorney General Eric Schmitt issued an opinion to kick off the state’s trigger ban making it one of the first states to nearly outlaw abortion. At the same time, the state’s last remaining abortion clinic quickly halted its services . All of these events unfolded along the backdrop of Dismer’s unplanned pregnancy.

“I took a pregnancy test after my shift in the clinic and realized that I'm pregnant, and I have more rights now than I will when I go home tonight,” Dismer told Salon. “That hit hard.”

The pregnancy wasn’t necessarily unwanted, Dismer told Salon. It just wasn’t “happening at the right time.” Ultimately, terminating the pregnancy was the best choice they could make for themself. But for Dismer, the rapidly changing legal landscape in their home state changed the calculus on how they could access abortion care. Not only in terms of where Dismer could access services, Dismer planned on getting an abortion at the clinic they worked at as a social worker in Illinois, but the support that accompanied Dismer. For example, Dismer couldn’t have anyone drive with them to and from the clinic for support.

"It's forcing shame and stigma on you during what is already the worst moment of your life."

“Because I didn't want anyone else to face the potential to be aiding and abetting an abortion, right?” Dismer said. “Not only was I faced with an unplanned pregnancy that I had to figure out if this was a good time in my life to become a parent, and what my partner's needs are, and all of that, but I also had to contend with the legal landscape, which made that decision making process unnecessarily traumatic.”

Dismer isn’t alone in feeling the emotional toll of having to travel out of state for an abortion. A 2023 study published in the journal Contraception found that the emotional cost of having to travel out of state is a common experience.

“It's forcing shame and stigma on you during what is already the worst moment of your life,” one study participant testified . Another said, “It was very stressful having to plan that trip and get there and be away from everyone and everything I knew.”

Following the Dobbs decision, states have been able to make their own laws severely restricting abortion access across the United States. According to the Guttmacher Institute , there has been a rise in interstate travel for abortion care since Dobbs overturned Roe v. Wade. The institute estimates one in five abortion patients traveled out of state for abortion care in 2023, compared to one in 10 who did so in 2020.

This week, Kari Lake brushed off criticism of abortion bans in her state of Arizona, saying "Even if we have a restrictive law here, you can go three hours that way, three hours that way, and you're going to be able to have an abortion."

But the reality is not so simple.

As Salon previously reported , shock waves and ripple effects are felt across the maternal health landscape when just one or two states implement near-total abortion bans. While many people think it’s easy to cross state lines to access care, it doesn’t come without both an emotional, and financial cost, to the patient.

Megan Jeyifo, executive director of Chicago Abortion Fund, knows firsthand the challenges people face when traveling state lines to access abortion care. Since Dobbs, Illinois has seen an influx in patients from the south. Data from the Society of Family Planning #WeCount found that after Dobbs, Illinois saw the biggest increase in out-of-state abortions.

At the Chicago Abortion Fund, Jeyifo and her colleagues help provide medical referrals and financial support to people who are facing barriers to access abortion services. Jeyifo emphasized it is “traumatizing” to travel for this care.

“People 100 percent internalize the difficulty that they face in accessing care, and can view it as a reflection of the morality of that care,” Jeyifo said. “I think part of our job as abortion funds is to say ‘It is not your fault this is hard. This is hard by design because politicians want us to not have control over our own bodies, and how we start or grow our families.’”

"This is hard by design because politicians want us to not have control over our own bodies."

Then there’s the financial component. Jeyifo told Salon it’s almost unheard of that insurance will cover the procedure when traveling from a state where there’s limited access to abortion care. Medicaid will not cover a patient if they travel out of state for an abortion either. Jeyifo said the average support cost, like for lodging, CAF provides a patient is $380. The average voucher they provide for the procedure itself is $480. And that’s just an average.

Between the cost of flights and the cost of Chicago hotels, Jeyifo said it’s very easy to spend up to $1,500 or $2,000 on one person's travel expenses. Notably, it’s estimated that only one in three Americans can comfortably cover a $400 emergency expense. Frequently, CAF has to help arrange childcare for a patient, too.

“We are literally supporting people that have to bring their children with them on an 11 hour or more one-way car trip,” Jeyifo said. “And that is a status quo, that is normalized at this moment. Childcare is a really huge barrier for our callers.”

Dr. Jennifer Kerns, a professor in the department of obstetrics gynecology and reproductive sciences at UCSF and staff physician at Trust Women, an abortion clinic in Kansas, said she sees firsthand the burden of people having to travel out of state for an abortion — sometimes to even have access to medication abortion.

“Some people are traveling by car, up to 12 hours just to drive to the clinic to access medications,” Kerns told Salon. “We routinely hear about how long it's taken patients to garner all of the resources needed to make arrangements, to make this trip, and we're only seeing the patients who actually ended up getting to us — we're not seeing the patients who made attempts or can't take that much time off of work or can't find anybody to watch their kids.”

We need your help to stay independent

In the lawsuit of women suing states, like Texas, for being unable to obtain proper healthcare while pregnant due to abortion restrictions, the stories reveal the massive burdens and barriers women face when having to travel out of state, too. At 15 weeks pregnant, one plaintiff suing Texas had to travel to a clinic in Colorado to undergo a selective reduction abortion procedure after learning one of her twins had the highly fatal genetic condition trisomy 18 . The procedure and cost of travel totaled thousands of dollars, the lawsuit said .

Kimberly Inez McGuire executive director of URGE (Unite for Reproductive and Gender Equity), told Salon this is especially for difficult for young people.

“Young people in this country are facing just extreme levels of economic precarity,” McGuire said. “They're struggling to find jobs that pay well, they're struggling to find jobs that have any paid sick time, and depending on the care that someone needs, it might be required that someone take one to three weeks to travel if they’re seeking abortion care.”

Traveling to access abortion care can turn someone’s life “upside down,” McGuire said.

“People are having to decide if they're trying to pay rent, or buy this very expensive plane ticket,”McGuire said. “There are support networks out there, but there's never enough, right? It’s uprooting peoples’ lives, and it’s why we have got to end these abortion bans.”

This U.S. City Was Just Named the Best Place to Live for Low Cost of Living

Hint: it's in Indiana.

With inflation and mortgage rates straining Americans' finances and plans to buy a home, many are looking to relocate to communities with lower housing and living costs. States like New York, California, and Illinois are losing residents to South Carolina, Texas, and Idaho, where people can still get more bang for their buck without compromising their standard of life or job opportunities. But if affordability is truly a top priority for you, consider moving to South Bend, Indiana, which just topped Niche.com's list of cities with the lowest cost of living in America.

South Bend, which is located on St. Joseph River in Northern Indiana and is home to about 103,000 residents, received an overall grade of A- based on its performance in several categories, such as housing, jobs, diversity, and cost of living. According to Zillow, the median home value in South Bend is $169,000, or over $200,000 below the country's average, and the median rent is $935, which is also lower than the national average of $1,268. In addition, the overall cost of living, which takes into account expenses such as groceries, transportation, clothing, and utilities, is 18 percent lower than the national average.

South Bend is home to the University of Notre Dame, which has left its mark on the city's social life. It offers tons of recreational activities, restaurants, bars, sports, and arts events. Those seeking a more active lifestyle closer to nature will also thrive here, as there are dozens of parks and hiking trails. South Bend's job market received a B from Niche.com, and its commute — an A. According to the Bureau of Labor, the unemployment rate in the city in February 2024 was 4.7 percent, with education, healthcare, and manufacturing among the top industries with the largest employment in the area.

However, the city's lowest scores were in the crime and safety (D+) and weather (C) categories, as South Bend records more violent and property crimes per capita than the nation's average

Another city in Indiana made it to the top three list of the most affordable places in the country, and that's Evansville, which ranked third. Second was Brownsville in southern Texas on the Gulf of Mexico.

When it comes to government planes and political trips, who pays for a president’s campaign travel?

WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s no simple matter to move the commander in chief from point A to B, and it’s even more complicated when the president is seeking a second term.

President Joe Biden recently spent three days in Pennsylvania , a pivotal state in the 2024 campaign, and he plans to be in Virginia and Florida this coming week. The Democratic incumbent is seeking an edge over Republican Donald Trump as he ramps up his travels around the country.

Here’s a look at how much it costs and who pays the bill during the campaign season.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

It’s not cheap to fly the president’s fleet.

The White House uses Sikorsky helicopters known as Marine One when the president is aboard, as well as custom Boeing 747s that are immediately recognizable as the iconic humpback Air Force One. (Sometimes the president uses a more modest modified 757 if his destination is nearby or if a runway isn’t long enough to accommodate the bigger plane.)

Marine One costs between $16,700 and almost $20,000 per hour to operate, according to Pentagon data for the 2022 budget year. Air Force One is even more expensive: roughly $200,000 per hour.

But those figures only scratch the surface of the real cost. There also are military cargo planes that travel ahead of the president to make sure his armored limousines are in place, not to mention the enormous security apparatus that follows the president everywhere.

New aircraft are in the works because the current versions are decades old. Sikorsky is producing 23 updated helicopters to serve as Marine One. Boeing is building two new Air Force One planes , and they are scheduled to be finished by 2028. According to the Pentagon, the planes will come with all enhancements, including “a mission communication system,” a “self-defense system” and even “autonomous baggage loading.”

FILE - President Joe Biden speaks during a campaign event in Scranton, Pa., April 16, 2024. Rarely a day goes without Biden mentioning insulin prices, constantly touting a $35 insulin price cap for Americans with diabetes who are on Medicare. But many people benefiting from the price cap were already paying far less than that for insulin. Others were already Biden supporters. That raises questions about how whether the issue can be as effective as the president believes. (AP Photo/Matt Rourke, File)

WHO PAYS FOR THE TRAVEL?

When the president flies for political purposes, the campaign is supposed to pay the bill. But during an election year, the line between governing and campaigning can be fuzzy.

For example, Biden held an official event Wednesday in Pittsburgh, where he announced his proposal for higher tariffs on steel imported from China. The event, however, was a not-so-subtle opportunity for the president to rub shoulders with union members who are critical to his reelection, and he jabbed at Trump in his remarks. (At one point Biden joked that the former president was “busy right now,” a reference to the hush money trial that recently got underway in New York.)

It’s up to the White House counsel’s office to figure out what percentage of the president’s travels are campaign related. That determines how much the federal government should be reimbursed by the Biden campaign. Sometimes the calculations aren’t straightforward, such as when the White House adds an official event to an otherwise political trip.

Norm Eisen, a White House ethics lawyer under President Barack Obama, said both Republicans and Democrats have usually hewed closely to regulations.

“We had a set of rules on how to do the allocations,” he said. “They’re intricate, and we stuck to them.”

No matter what, taxpayers end up on the hook for most of the cost. Campaigns do not pay for all the Secret Service agents and the rest of the security apparatus. In fact, they usually only cover the cost of Air Force One passengers who are flying for explicitly political purposes — sort of like buying a ticket on a particularly exclusive private jet.

HOW MUCH HAS BIDEN PAID?

Biden’s campaign and his joint fundraising committee have been stockpiling travel cash in an escrow account maintained by the Democratic National Committee. From January 2023 until the end of last month, they deposited nearly $6.5 million.

Some of that money goes to general campaign logistics, such as staff expenses and advance work. The account is also used to reimburse the federal government for official aircraft used to transport the president, the first lady, the vice president and the second gentleman when they travel for the reelection effort.

So far, not much money has found its way back to the U.S. Treasury. As of the latest data available, just $300,000 has been provided.

It’s safe to assume that Biden’s campaign will end up forking over much more than that once the campaign is over. Trump’s team reimbursed the federal government nearly $4.7 million for travel expenses during the 2020 race.

But Biden probably won’t have trouble covering his bills. His campaign and the DNC had more than $192 million in cash on hand at the end of March.
