Dressing Stick: A Daily Living Aid In 4 Quick Steps

A dressing stick is an assistive device used to help make putting on and taking off clothing easier for people who have limited upper body range of motion (reach) and decreased hip flexion (bending).  This type of adaptive equipment aims to reduce bending and reaching while putting on and taking off various types of clothing.  Additionally, a screw hook can be added for the purpose of creating a shoe aid and zipper pull. This is a quick and easy project so let’s get started.

What Is A Dressing Stick?

A dressing stick is a type of dressing aid that is designed to help make putting on and taking off clothing easier.  This type of long-handled adaptive device is often recommended by occupational therapists to help reduce the need for bending, reaching or twisting while getting dressed.  Furthermore, the great thing about a dressing stick is that it can help people gain or maintain independence in dressing. Plus, it’s a pretty simple device to create too.  

Dressing sticks can be used to don and doff pants, shirts, jackets, undergarments, pull zippers up and down, remove socks, and even help pull on shoes. The large hook is used to lift clothing or straps up over the shoulder when reach is limited. It can also be used to pull pant legs up to the ankles, and lift garments off the shoulder and down the arm to remove. This device can assist with moving zippers up and down; however, it does not help align zippers. 

Dressing aids are typically made from a 27-28” dowel rod with ⅝” thickness with a special hook at each end.  The specially designed hooks assist to grab hold of garments, pull on shoes, and zip up zippers.

What Is The Purpose Of A  Shoe Aid And Zipper Pull?

In addition to the large hook portion of the dressing stick used to don and doff clothing, this project also includes instructions for how to add a shoe aid and zipper pull.  The type of shoe aid we are making is a type of adaptive equipment used to assist individuals with pulling on their shoes. On the other hand, the screw hook can also be used as a zipper pull, and assists individuals in zipping up or down a zipper.  However, the zipper pull does not align the zippers.  See the above section for information about Magzip technology which aligns zippers automatically.  

For the project, a screw hook is placed at one end of the dowel rod.  This, of course, can be used as both a shoe aid and a zipper pull.  But this portion of the project is optional.

When Is A Dressing Stick Helpful?

Dressing sticks can assist people who have limited upper body range of motion (reach) and decreased hip flexion (bending at the hips). Furthermore, this type of dressing aid can improve or gain independence in getting dressed and undressed for those who have bending and reaching limitations.  Whether someone is recovering from hip surgery or an injury, has arthritis, is a senior, or has a disability, a dressing stick can help regain, improve, or maintain independence in dressing skills.

How Is The DIY Dressing Stick Version Different From The Original?

The do-it-yourself dressing stick is different from the original because it is made using the hook portion of a clothing hanger to create the specialized hook as seen in dressing sticks sold online .  The hanger portion of the dressing stick is used to grab clothing either by removing or putting on the garment such as over the shoulder. Additionally, the screw hook on the opposite end of the dowel rod can be used as both a long-handled shoe aid and a zipper pull.     

How Do I Make A Pediatric Dressing Stick?

To make a pediatric dressing stick for a child, adjust the length of the dowel rod based on their height and reach needs.

Projects With A Purpose is a section of my posts where I lay out ideas for sharing some of The DIY Therapist projects with others.  These long-handled dressing sticks can be given to senior care centers and rehab facilities for people who may otherwise not have one.  Here are a few things to keep in mind before making and donating dressing sticks:

• Decide where you would like to donate DIY dressing sticks.  Consider places such as local assisted living homes, nursing homes, rehab facilities, home health agencies, and rehab facilities.
• Contact the director, occupational therapist , or physical therapist and find out their needs for dressing sticks.  
• If there is a need, find out how many dressing sticks may be needed.  Let them know how many you would be willing to make, and get creating. 
• Lastly, schedule a drop off time and date. 

Special Considerations

• This project is not intended to be made by children.
• Use caution when using a wire cutters being careful not to pinch or cut your fingers. 
• Lastly, make sure to wrap all sharp ends of the hanger to avoid cuts and scrapes.   See pictures for reference.  Replace duct tape as needed.

How To Make A Dressing Stick

• 27-28” dowel rod with 5/8″ thickness
• Metal clothes hanger
• Wire cutters
• 1- Screw hook screw

Instructions

• First, screw the screw hook into one end of the dowel rod until secure.  See picture 1 above.   
• Using the wire cutters, cut the hook portion off the main hanger as seen in the picture 2 above. 
• Bend the legs of the hanger down (picture 3), and then secure the hanger with duct tape (opposite the screw hook) as seen in picture 4 above.
• Lastly, wrap any sharp ends of the hanger with duct tape to avoid scratches as seen in picture 4 above.

From all of the trips that have come with being on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills to the ones required of being on set as an actress, Kyle Richards knows how to dress for travel like a pro. With all of the trips she’s taken, we have to assume she’s put hundreds of clothing items to the test to find out which ones work best while on the road. So to know she’s called a pair of $23 leggings a travel “essential” — we know they’ve got to be good.

In an Amazon livestream showcasing her “Vacay Getaway Essentials,” the 55-year-old shared that the Fullsoft High Waisted Leggings were some of her favorites. She noted that she pairs them with a white hoodie for a cozy-but-cute airport outfit.

“These are essential to wear when traveling, these soft pants,” she said. “They’re leggings, but they don’t feel like workout leggings. They’re so soft and cozy.”

One of the features of the leggings she likes the most is their tummy-control waistline. “They have this high waist here,” she said. “That’s always good to have, a little band here that holds my stomach in, so I like that.” But we also have to assume she loves their non-see-through, four-way stretch fabric too, made of a polyester-spandex blend.

Richards is far from the only one who’s fallen into the hype of these leggings. On top of being an Amazon bestseller, over 20,000 shoppers have come back to the site to give the product a five-star rating, usually accompanied by a rave review. Not to mention, over 1,000 packs of these leggings have been bought just this last month.

What to do in Moscow in winter? Enjoy the parks whose entry is completely free! Indeed, the parks of Moscow are great spaces of relaxation and entertainment very appreciated by the Muscovites. However, you must know the most interesting of the city center: these are the new Zariadié park and the Gorky park.

In what to do in Moscow in winter, I cannot not mention the walk in the streets of Moscow. Indeed, the streets of the city center are very nicely decorated. In addition to the famous places to visit, such as Saint Basil’s Cathedral or Red Square, there are nice neighborhoods to see to enjoy the winter and better understand Moscow.

Neighborhoods to visit. The districts of Patriarchy Prudy and Tchistye Prudy are to be discovered, because there are already more locals there. In addition, in each of these districts, there is a pond and cafes and restaurants around.

Streets to see. Nikolskaya, Bolchaya Dmitrovka, Pereoulok Stoleshnikov, Pereoulok Kamergersky and Kuznetchny Most streets are also worth a walk.

To know how to dress for Moscow winter and Russian winter in general, you can use my Russian grandmother’s golden rule (who lived on Novaya Zemlya Island in Russia). You have to cover the strategic places to be warm. That is, clothes and shoes in winter in Russia must protect the extremities of the body as much as possible, then the throat and buttocks. It is quite the same in Canada I guess.

Three important things for how to dress for Moscow winter:

• Undershirts are very important. They shouldn’t be wide, they should stick to your skin.
• Hooded coats
• High shoes with a thick and gripping sole

What to enjoy Moscow winter: in summary

As we have seen, Moscow is therefore transformed during the winter into a magical place: decorations, snow, evening lights, ice rink … Indeed, everything is there for New Year’s Day, the most important holiday in Russia. FAIR LAWN — It was a typical day at the Maurice M. Pine Free Public Library : Staff members stacked books, children browsed for their favorite titles.

There was just one thing that might seem a bit out of the ordinary: the bride in the flowing white gown strolling by the bookshelves.

Early last year, Director Adele Puccio decided her library wasn’t just going to loan out books, so it added a new collection to borrow from: wedding dresses . The decision stemmed from Puccio's deep love of vintage wedding dresses and a desire to bring new life to gowns that are typically used only once.  

“Everyone who gets married buys a wedding dress, and it’s worn once and it's put away," she said. "Unless they have someone in the family who is interested, it generally just sits there.

"You get some people who say ‘this is my mother’s wedding dress, it’s been in the attic since 1950.’ It’s sad. This is a way of recycling and saving money.”

The dresses are available free of charge − you don't even need a library card. Over 40 have found homes with new owners since the program began. The collection resides in Puccio’s office, which doubles as a fitting room for brides to try on gowns before making a choice.

On a recent afternoon, Samantha Sadkin of Harrison, who is getting married next August, came by after seeing pictures of Puccio and the dresses on Instagram.

“When I first heard about it, I thought it was amazing, especially with how expensive dresses are,” said Sadkin. "Some people don’t want to keep their dress afterward when they don’t have a place to keep it, or they know they’re not going to have kids so they don’t have anyone to pass it down to. Passing it down to other people is great.”

Cinderella in the stacks

Before heading to Fair Lawn , Sadkin hadn’t thought about what type of dress she wanted. She tried out a few during her hourlong visit, frequently coming out to the library floor to get opinions from her family and the staff.

She ended up falling in love with two different options − one sleeveless dress and one gown − and after a tough debate settled on the one that felt right.

“When I tried that one and turned around, I felt like Cinderella,” she said.

One dress she tried provided a special moment for a couple from North Bergen who happened to be visiting at the same time. Cindy Hesleitner and her husband Charles had come to donate her 46-year-old wedding dress. The couple brought along a book of wedding photos to show to the library staff.

Sadkin offered to model the white gown with a veil so the couple could see it one last time. When she walked out of Puccio’s office, Charles placed his hand on Cindy’s shoulder. "Ah, the memories," he mused. Husband and wife posed for a photo with Sadkin before parting with the dress for good.

“I think it’s time,” said Cindy. “Hopefully someone can use it.”

An encyclopedic knowledge of wedding attire

The program wouldn’t be possible without Puccio and her encyclopedic knowledge of wedding attire. As a kid growing up in Brooklyn, she lived near a Kleinfeld Bridal store, where she watched brides try on all sorts of dresses.

“I used to go in there and see the girls," said Puccio, 58. "My older cousins all got their dresses there."

Puccio would eventually move out of the city and began working for the Bayonne Public Library in the early 2000s. But her interest in wedding dresses, especially vintage gowns, never waned. She began looking on eBay and Yahoo auctions, finding many were selling used dresses from across the decades. Her husband, who died in 2019, would often laugh when Puccio would “bring home some stray wedding gown” that she found.

“There were these wedding dresses that are awesome, but they were older,” said Puccio. “We would get them really cheap and I started to put together a vintage bridal show.”

The show, held in 2000 at the Bayonne library, was a hit, and Puccio began giving away the clothing, many of it going to the women who modeled during the event.

Fair Lawn wedding dresses a 'shared dream'

Puccio retired from the hobby for years as she ran out of storage in her apartment. But her interest was rekindled last year by a Facebook group called Shared Dream Dresses , where visitors posted pictures of old gowns to pass along to new brides. The new owner was then supposed to pass it on to another person.

“That way the dresses would live, since most people don’t do anything else with their wedding dress again,” said Puccio. “They just put them in preservation boxes.”

She began spreading the word on Freecycle , a nonprofit network of online “gifting” groups. Donors began asking Puccio for help passing on dresses and began dropping them at the library. Recent media coverage brought more attention and the dress exchange exploded from there, Puccio said.

Puccio was contacted last month by a donor who wanted to send a dress from Florida. Others have come from Rhode Island and Tennessee after hearing about the collection from local relatives.

While the idea is that a bride would bring the wedding dress back so it could be used again, most people get attached, Puccio said. But she doesn’t mind.

“If they return them, great,” said Puccio. “If they don’t, I’m not going to worry about it.”

A zombie bride

Puccio’s passion for the project is evident when she speaks to browsing brides. With Sadkin, she was able to name each dress brand and year in her collection from memory − and who dropped it off.

There was the "lovely dress from ’46” which came complete with the user's old wedding photo, as well as a 1965 vintage gown and more recently made options from a local bridal store that went out of business.

“You never know what you’ll find here,” Puccio said.

Puccio even put her own wedding dress – white, chiffon, with embroidered flowers – on the rack. She was surprised when it was chosen by a bride, since it had seen some wear and tear over the years. After wearing it at her 1985 wedding, Puccio repurposed the dress for a zombie bride costume for Halloween, she said, and also wore it during a Pride parade in New York City after gay marriage was legalized in 2015.

They still need donations

There's a full-length mirror in her office, but it's common for brides to come out to get second opinions from library workers. “It’s hilarious," she said. "It’s like working with a bunch of mother hens."

The library is still gladly taking contributions. For potential donors, Puccio noted that she “really needs things bigger than a size 6,” as she already has plenty of size 2 and 4 dresses. For those interested in trying on the clothes, Puccio recommends calling ahead to set up an appointment.

The moment when a shopper finds the dress of their dreams is her favorite, she said.

“I have always loved wedding dresses but I have also always loved seeing people being happy and dressed up,” said Puccio. “Someone will come in and say they’re looking and we’ll put something from the '80s on them that they think they wouldn’t like, but then they do."
