Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card review

Partner Offer

In a Nutshell:

You can travel anytime you want with this flexible travel card: The Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card sets itself apart from other travel cards by doing away with restrictive travel policies and letting you book your rewards-funded travel yourself.

Learn more about this card

Other Notable Features: No foreign transaction fees, Visa Signature benefits, EMV chip card with the ability to add a PIN for international travel, auto rental collision damage waiver, roadside dispatch, lost luggage reimbursement, concierge services

The Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card is a great choice for occasional travelers who like to search the web for the best deals without sacrificing their option to use rewards for the purchase. It’s an incredibly flexible card when it comes to redemption options and earning capacity, however, it lacks many of the appealing benefits offered by other popular travel credit cards. That said, there are some limitations compared to cards with a potentially higher rewards value.

The Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card offers a solid rewards program, especially if you already have Merrill or Bank of America® accounts. The Bank of America Preferred Rewards® program offers even more rewards on top of what you would earn with its flat-rate 1.5-point rewards structure. For those who don’t mind having a more complicated rewards structure in return for more travel benefits, rewards and cardholder perks, you may do better with other comparable travel rewards cards.

  • No annual fee : Most travel rewards cards require you to pay an annual fee in exchange for premium travel perks, so having a $0 annual fee is unique.
  • No foreign transaction fee : Foreign transaction fees can make the overall cost of your purchases go up tremendously. Fortunately, when going abroad, travelers do not have to worry about these pesky charges when using this card.
  • Decent sign-up bonus : After spending $1,000 in purchases within the first 90 days after account opening, new cardholders can get 25,000 online bonus points, which is an excellent offering on top of the card’s ongoing rewards rate.
  • Uncapped reward earnings : Since there is no limit to the number of points you can earn, you can easily maximize your reward earnings.
  • Special perks for Bank of America customers : The Preferred Rewards program allows certain Bank of America® credit card holders to earn extra bonus rewards. If you have enough money in combined balances in your Bank of American and Merrill accounts, you can earn 25%-75% more rewards.
  • Requires good or excellent credit : Potential applicants may be denied if they do not fulfill the credit score requirement, which could prevent many people from applying.
  • Potentially high APR : Depending on your creditworthiness, you could be subjected to an APR that you may not be comfortable with.
  • No bonus categories : The card only offers flat-rate rewards, which may not be enough for people looking for tiered categories to boost their reward earnings.

Why you might want the Bank of America Travel Rewards Card

If you’re the type of cardholder always looking around for a good sign-up bonus on a card with no annual fee, then Bank of America’s travel card is a great option for you. You’ll earn a flat rate of rewards on all your purchases, giving you the freedom to shop for what you want, when you want to and still earn a decent rate.

One unique benefit of this card is that if you happen to have a Merrill or a Bank of America account you can earn a boosted rewards rate with Preferred Rewards.

Higher sign-up bonus

Though not the most valuable sign-up offer currently available, the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card does include a decent bonus of 25,000 online points for users who spend $1,000 in the first 90 days. If you redeem these points for travel purchases, they are worth up to $250.

Flat-rate rewards on all purchases

The Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card comes with one flat earning rate on all purchases – making it easy to rack up points without keeping track of bonus categories or focusing your spending in one area. Cardholders bring in 1.5 points per dollar on every purchase. The one exception to this is purchases made in the Bank of America Travel Center, which earn an additional 1.5 points per dollar for a total of 3 points per dollar spent.

Bank of America Preferred Rewards program

If you are already a Bank of America or Merrill checking or savings account holder, you might be able to boost your earning rate on the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card. This is certainly the case if you have a significant balance. Bank of America has a tiered rewards rate program that increases at incremental stages depending on how large your account balance is in your Bank of America or Merrill account. You can potentially qualify for a 75% point boost with an increased earned rate of 2.6% (up from the standard 1.5% per dollar spent) by qualifying for Platinum Honors – Bank of America’s highest Preferred Rewards tier.

Bank of America Preferred Rewards tiers and earning rates

As you can see, even if you don’t have a balance over $100,000 in your Bank of America or Merrill account you can still earn either a 25% or 50% boost to your rewards rate.

When combined with some of the other benefits of this card, even a 1.9% earning rate makes this card stand out despite the fact some flat-rate rewards cards have a slightly higher rate.

Flexible point redemption

Points earned with the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card are worth the same amount whether you book travel with the bank or another site – unlike other travel cards that offer a boost on certain purchases. However, this gives the card some added flexibility and means you can think less critically about how you want to use those points.

You can redeem points for any travel purchase made on your card in the last 12 months. That means you can find a better deal on a third-party travel site and still use your rewards to cover the cost. You may also redeem points for a statement credit to pay for dining purchases, a cash redemption or gift card.

Bank of America Travel Rewards redemption options

Solid intro apr for new purchases and balance transfers.

In addition to easy-to-earn rewards and flexible redemption, the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card offers a 0% introductory APR for 15 billing cycles for new purchases (18.24% to 28.24% variable thereafter) and for balance transfers made within the first 60 days (after which, the 18.24% to 28.24% variable APR applies). There is a 3% intro balance transfer fee for 60 days from account opening, then 4%.

Very few travel cards offer an intro APR on both balance transfers and new purchases, so this card could be an ideal pick if you need to pay off debt or chip away at the cost of a new purchase in the short term, but want to focus on earning travel rewards long term.

This can be a great perk for users who have a big purchase to make and want to pay it down over time without racking up interest. You’ll have a little more than a full year to make slow payments without having to worry about additional charges. Just be sure not to charge more than you can pay off in the introductory period, as the ongoing APR can be high.

Why you might want a different travel rewards card

If you’re familiar with rewards programs, know which categories you spend your money the most and can plan accordingly to use different cards for every purchase, you might want to opt for a more elaborate card strategy that takes advantage of higher earning cards. A rate of 1.5 points per dollar spent is a decent rate, but it’s by no means the best offer out there.

That said, there are a few shortcomings the Bank of America Travel Rewards card has that makes it fall a little further down the list of best travel rewards cards.

No bonus for travel redemption

Redemption through an issuer’s travel portal is a competitive feature on a travel rewards card that comes with some other cards in this category. Unfortunately, points redeemed for travel through the Bank of America Travel center won’t see an increase in value like on some other issuer’s cards. This puts Bank of America’s card a little further down the list.

Although purchases made through the travel center will earn double points, redeeming those points for travel won’t increase their value. Meaning you’ll need to spend more to increase the worthiness of your rewards, while with another card it might mean spending less and redeeming for more.

For example, points earned with the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card earn an additional 25% value when redeemed through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Portal, making points (normally worth 1 cent each) worth 1.25 cents each.

The most value you can get out of a Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card point is 1 cent per point, other travel cards can often outpace its value. When comparing to another card, be sure to keep point value in mind because, like Chase, some issuers have increased point value.

travel rewards visa signature

Low rewards rate

While earning 1.5 points per dollar on every purchase is convenient and it can be boosted if you’re a Bank of America or Merrill account holder, for a general cardholder who’s looking for a solid travel rewards card, it’s a little low. Even the 3 points per dollar on travel booked through Bank of America’s Travel Center is comparatively low to other cards, especially considering the points’ low value for redemption.

If you want to step into travel rewards and fly higher, you might benefit from a card that earns at a higher rate on general purchases and pair it with a card from the same issuer that earns a high rate for travel. This may allow you to pool your points and redeem them through that issuer’s rewards portal.

For instance, you might be better served with a 2% cash back card like the Citi Double Cash® Card (1% when you buy, 1% when you pay) paired with the Citi Premier® Card . While the Premier Card has an annual fee of $95, depending on how much you spend you may be able to offset that fee by earning more rewards than you would with the Bank of America Travel Rewards card.

No standout perks

The Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card has a few benefits that make it valuable for frequent travelers, but it doesn’t have many extensive perks.

  • No foreign transaction fee – When traveling abroad, you won’t pay any surcharge on foreign transactions.
  • Car rental insurance – If your rental car is damaged or stolen, the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card can reimburse you in excess of the company’s insurance policy.
  • Add PIN for international travel – The Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card is an EMV chip card, and you can add a PIN for easy use when traveling overseas.

While certainly not the most impressive travel perks available on a rewards card, all these benefits could potentially save frequent travelers some money on their next trip — but in comparison to other travel rewards cards, you could get a much better lineup of perks than with this card.

How does the Bank of America Travel Rewards card compare to other cards?

The flat earning rate on the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card makes it easy to rack up points with this no-annual-fee option, but savvy spenders might be able to get more out of a travel card with a different structure. Here are a few popular alternatives:

Bank of America Travel Rewards vs. Chase Sapphire Preferred

A fan-favorite travel card, the Chase Sapphire Preferred offers a good rewards rate and a valuable sign-up bonus. If you redeem all 60,000 points (after spending $4,000 in the first three months to earn the bonus) for travel in the Chase Travel portal, they are worth up to $750. The biggest drawback to the Sapphire Preferred in comparison to the Bank of America Travel Rewards Card is its $95 annual fee, though heavy spenders can probably offset this cost with a great earning rate on travel and restaurant purchases.

Bank of America Travel Rewards vs. Capital One VentureOne

Like the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card, the Capital One VentureOne doesn’t charge an annual fee and offers a flat rate of miles on most purchases – 1.25 miles per dollar. The Capital One VentureOne also charges no foreign transaction fee. However, the VentureOne also comes with a higher low-end and high-end APR rate (19.99% to 29.99% variable) than the Bank of America Travel Rewards Card does. Miles with the VentureOne are also worth that same as Bank of America points at 1 cent apiece. However, with a lower earning rate, the VentureOne won’t compete well with cards that have a high point value and a high earning rate.

Bank of America Travel Rewards vs. Wells Fargo Autograph

The Wells Fargo Autograph is another popular no-annual-fee travel card, thanks to its extensive list of categories that qualify for the 3 point-per-dollar rate. Cardholders can earn 3 points per dollar on restaurants, travel, transit, gas station purchases, select streaming services and phone plans as well as 1 point per dollar on other purchases. This makes it easy to rack up plenty of points. Plus, cardholders who also have a Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card may earn even more cash rewards on purchases.

How to use the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card:

  • Spend at least $1,000 in the first 90 days to earn the sign-up bonus.
  • Put all your purchases on the card to take advantage of a generous flat rewards rate.
  • Consider purchasing travel through the Bank of America Travel center to earn double points.
  • If you are eligible, sign up for Preferred Rewards to boost your earnings.

Is the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card right for you?

If you are the type of cardholder who prefers to put all their purchases on one card and not worry about keeping track of bonus categories, the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card offers a good rate of points for a card with no annual fee. Plus, Bank of America account holders with a significant balance can boost their rewards rate and fast-track their way to their next vacation.

On the other hand, if the realm of rewards earning sparks your curiosity and you want to maximize how much you get back for what you spend, you might consider a more strategic approach. That said, the Bank of America Travel Rewards card is a terrific option for newcomers to rewards or for those who aren’t confident in their ability to offset the annual fees they may face with more beneficial cards.

A force multiplier for travel rewards: Wells Fargo Visa Signature credit card review

Wells Fargo Visa Signature Card _CCSL

Update: The Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card is no longer open to new applications. Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Wells Fargo Visa Signature® card Overview

The Wells Fargo Visa Signature® card doesn't offer rewards that transfer to airline miles, but as you'll see, that shouldn't be a deal-breaker since it gives you the opportunity to earn an impressive 4.5% back in travel rewards on many of your purchases. Card Rating*: ⭐⭐⭐½

*Card Rating is based on the opinion of TPG's editors and is not influenced by the card issuer.

As more airlines move to dynamic — and usually higher — pricing of their mileage awards, they're giving travelers less incentive to use their own cobranded cards to earn frequent-flyer miles. Instead, award travel enthusiasts should be looking for ways to earn rewards from their credit cards that they can redeem for any flight on any airline. The Wells Fargo Visa Signature Card can be a great tool for doing just that. The points this card earns can be worth as much as 1.5 cents each toward flights. Better yet, carrying this card has the effect of increasing the value of points you earn from other Wells Fargo cards, which is why you shouldn't overlook it in your wallet.

First, the bad news: The card application is not currently available on the Wells Fargo site. But if you already carry this potential powerhouse, read on to see how you can leverage its benefits for maximum value.

The information for the Wells Fargo Visa Signature card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Who is this card for?

The Wells Fargo Visa Signature is a card for those who want to earn travel rewards without paying an annual fee or having to focus their energy on a single airline and hotel loyalty program. With this card you earn points that can be redeemed for flights on any airline, just like paying for tickets with cash. This is also a card that works well for those who already bank with Wells Fargo and want to manage their credit cards along with their other accounts.

Finally, this card's secret superpower is that it increases the value of the Wells Fargo Go Far Rewards earned from the bank's other cards, including the Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card (no longer available to new applicants). Normally, points earned from that card are worth 1 cent each toward airfare redemptions, but when you also carry the Wells Fargo Visa Signature card, they become worth 1.5 cents each.

The Wells Fargo Propel offers various bonus earning categories with up to 3x per dollar on:

  • Gas stations
  • Popular streaming services

It earns 1x on everything else. So if you used your Wells Fargo Propel to earn 3x on those special categories, and then combined your rewards with the ones from your Wells Fargo Visa Signature before redeeming for flights, you could be getting as much as 4.5% (3x with a 50% bonus) return on your spending for airfare redemptions, specifically.

The information for the Wells Fargo Propel has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Sign-up bonus

The card is currently not available to new applicants.

Main benefits and perks

This card comes with strong benefits, including:

  • 0% intro APR financing for the first 15 months from account opening on both new purchases and balance transfers (then a variable APR of 12.49% to 25.49% applies)
  • Introductory balance fee of either $5 or 3%of the amount of each balance transfer, whichever is greater, for 120 days from account opening. After that, up to 5%for each balance transfer, with a minimum of $5.
  • Trip cancellation protection
  • Lost luggage reimbursement
  • Collision damage coverage on auto rentals
  • Purchase protection
  • Price protection
  • Extended warranty coverage
  • Mobile phone protection plan that covers you when you charge your phone service bill to your card
  • Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection perks

Many of these are simply benefits that come with any Visa Signature card. But take special note of the mobile phone protection — for just a $25 deductible, you'll receive up to $600 in coverage against theft or damage for your phone (up to $1,200 per 12-month period) when you use your card to pay your monthly cell phone bill. That's extraordinary for a no-annual-fee credit card .

How to earn points

Let's get straight to the point: This card's earning rate is poor. You'll earn just 1 point per dollar spent on all purchases. That's it. You can, however, earn bonus points when you shop through the Wells Fargo's Go Far Earn More Mall .

How to redeem points

Points from this card can be redeemed through the Go Far Rewards portal for:

  • Car rentals
  • Merchandise
  • Online auctions

You'll want to skip all options except airfare redemptions, though. That's because points redeemed for airfare are worth 1.5 cents each, which is 50% more than the others possibilities. Just note that you have to redeem your points using the Wells Fargo Go Far Rewards portal, specifically; you can't book your reservations directly with an airline or through an OTA and then request a statement credit later.

Little-known facts about the Wells Fargo Visa Signature

1. You can receive as much as 1.75 cents per point. If you use your card to spend $50,000 in a year, you receive as much as 1.75 cents per point in value for airfare redemptions.

2. This is one of the rare no-annual-fee Visa Signature cards. As mentioned above, the Visa Signature program comes with a suite of benefits, including various travel protections. But nearly all Visa Signature cards charge annual fees, except this one and a few others.

3. It's also a rare no-annual-fee card with mobile phone protection. There aren't too many cards that offer theft and damage coverage for mobile phones, beyond the basic 60 or 90 days of purchase protection that might cover all new purchases. But this card has no annual fee and cell phone protection (with a $25 deductible) with a maximum benefit limit of $600 per claim and $1,200 per 12-month period. That's more generous than most cell phone coverages on annual-fee-incurring cards!

4. This card charges a "foreign currency conversion fee." Many credit cards still charge a foreign transaction fee for charges processed outside of the U.S. Cards that have these fees even impose them on charges you make at home from a foreign company in some cases. For example, if you purchase a travel reservation from a foreign airline or hotel, you might be charged in U.S. dollars, but since the transaction is processed outside of the U.S., you could still be charged this fee. This is also the case in other countries that use U.S. dollars, such as Ecuador, El Salvador and the British Virgin Islands. But the Wells Fargo Visa Signature card is different in that it has a foreign currency conversion fee of 3%. This means that you should't be charged this fee if your foreign transaction is in U.S. dollars. It's better to have a card with none of these fees, but Wells Fargo is doing something different here.

Related: Best credit cards with no foreign transaction fees

Bottom line

The Wells Fargo Visa Signature card is a simple travel rewards card with serious potential. If you were able to apply while it was still possible, you would have started off with a generous initial rewards offer and 15 months of interest-free financing. But to get really good long-term value from this card, you'll need to use it for airfare redemptions to get 1.5 or even 1.75 cents per point. You'll also want to pair it with the Wells Fargo Propel American Express card to get that card's 3x reward categories.

By itself, airfare rewards worth 1.5% of spending aren't very exciting, even with a strong package of cardholder benefits. But when you're able to combine these two cards and up your return on spending to 4.5% (or even 5.25% if you spend $50,000 or more per year on the Wells Fargo Visa Signature) on many of your purchases, then you could have a winning combination.

FlexPerks Business Travel Rewards Visa Cardmembers may receive up to a $25 airline allowance with each redeemed round-trip airline award travel ticket. Effective July 1, 2019, you must redeem a minimum of 10,000 FlexPoints per round-trip airline award ticket in order to be eligible for the $25 airline allowance. Cardmembers who redeem FlexPoints for award travel may be credited up to $25 on a future statement for Qualified Purchases made using their FlexPerks Business Travel Rewards Visa Card with the airline carrier providing award travel flight. “Qualified Purchases” are any purchases made with your FlexPerks Business Travel Rewards Visa Card that post to your account under the airline carrier providing your award travel flight between the dates of your award travel flight. U.S. Bank cannot control which credit card issuers an airline chooses to accept. If you purchase airfare from an airline and use Real-Time Mobile Rewards to pay for the airfare, you will not be eligible to receive the $25 Airline Allowance; the $25 Airline Allowance is only available for travel rewards FlexPoints redemption made through the Rewards Center online or by phone. Cardmembers must call Cardmember Services using the phone number printed on the back of their card to request a statement credit within 90 days of a Qualified Purchase. Once the request is approved by Cardmember Services, the Cardmember will receive a statement credit within 4 to 6 weeks for the amount of the qualified purchase, up to $25. A statement credit will reduce the Account balance, but does not count as a payment and thus does not reduce the minimum payment due. U.S. Bank does not have the ability to control how a merchant chooses to classify their business and therefore reserves the right to determine which purchases qualify for allowance. You may redeem allowance for Qualified Purchases only if the outstanding balance of your account is below its revolve limit and if your account is open and in good standing under the terms of your Cardmember Agreement. Once you or we close your account for any reason, your allowance may be forfeited.

Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card and Bank of America Travel Rewards Credit Card for Students

With the Bank of America Travel Rewards credit card and the Bank of America Travel Rewards Credit Card for Students, you can use your points for:

  • Cash back in the form of a check or direct deposit to an eligible Bank of America or Merrill account
  • A statement credit to cover eligible travel-related purchases

Unlike with other travel rewards programs, you can use your eligible card to book travel with any eligible providers, and Bank of America’s list of qualifying travel purchases is extensive. In addition to airlines, hotels, car rentals and eligible transit, travel-related purchases also include purchases made with eligible cruise lines, parking garages, travel agencies, tourist attractions, art galleries, amusement parks and more.

How to maximize Bank of America travel rewards points

To get the most of your travel rewards points with Bank of America, you should try to be as strategic as you can. When you go to redeem points, consider the ways you may be able to earn more points on your spending and any ways you can maximize your rewards .

Join the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program

One major way to earn more Bank of America travel rewards involves signing up for the Bank of America Preferred Rewards® program. Doing so can net you an additional 25 percent to 75 percent more in rewards for each dollar you spend. However, you do need to meet certain qualifications to enroll in this program, such as having:

  • An active, eligible Bank of America checking account
  • A three-month average combined balance of $20,000 or more in eligible Bank of America accounts and/or Merrill investment accounts

Also, keep in mind that the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program offers additional perks like savings boosters and loan discounts for members with cash on deposit. The following chart shows how much more you could earn in rewards as a member, as well as how much you need to keep in eligible accounts to qualify for each tier.

While the minimum balance requirements are high, the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program can help you earn considerably more points on your spending if you qualify. For example, Bank of America Premium Rewards credit card members in the Platinum Honors tier have the potential to earn up to 3.5X points for every dollar spent on travel and dining purchases and up to 2.62X points on other purchases.

Compare pricing in the travel portal

The Bank of America Travel Center lets you make travel bookings with over 200,000 hotels and resorts and more than 200 airlines, among other options. Since some Bank of America travel rewards credit cards let you redeem your points for either travel-related statement credits or travel booked through the Bank of America Travel Center, you should compare the prices offered in the travel portal with other travel sites. By comparing prices, you can make sure you get the best deal.

Decide whether a card with an annual fee is right for you

Finally, make sure to think about your goals before you sign up for a travel credit card from this issuer. It’s often tempting to just choose a card with no annual fee — and that might be the right move for you. However, a card with an annual fee typically comes with more benefits and perks. For example, when you pay the $95 annual fee for the Bank of America Premium Rewards card, you’ll get higher rewards rates on travel and dining spending, up to a $100 annual credit for incidental airline expenses to cover eligible costs and up to a $100 application fee credit toward Global Entry or TSA PreCheck membership every four years. All of this could easily make the annual fee worthwhile for some people.

The bottom line

Bank of America travel rewards can work differently depending on the card you sign up for, so make sure to compare the best rewards cards available before you decide on a card. In the meantime, spend some time comparing cards from this issuer to top travel rewards credit cards from other major issuers. You may find that Bank of America has what you’re looking for in a travel rewards card, but you’ll never know for sure unless you check.

*Information about the Free Spirit® Travel More World Elite Mastercard®, Allways Rewards Visa® Credit Card, Royal Caribbean Visa Signature® card, Norwegian Cruise Line® World Mastercard®, Celebrity Cruises Visa Signature® card, Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard® and Air France KLM World Elite Mastercard® has been collected independently by Bankrate. Benefits and Features

Carry a credit card that's easy to use and manage, with peace of mind built in.

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

"Visa Signature" refers to a package of benefits and perks offered on certain cards that carry the Visa name. Visa offers three levels of benefits , which vary by card. Signature is the middle level: It offers more than the basic benefits of the Traditional tier but not as much as you get with high-end Visa Infinite cards.

Below is a quick summary of Visa Signature benefits and a guide to using the more valuable ones.

Summary of Visa Signature benefits

Visa Signature benefits include the following:

Extended warranty protection.

Travel and emergency assistance.

Year-end spending summary.

Visa Signature concierge.

Roadside assistance (T).

Auto rental collision damage waiver (T).

Zero fraud liability (T).

Lost/stolen card reporting, emergency replacement and emergency cash (T).

Cardholder inquiry service (T).

Benefits marked with (T) are part of Visa's Traditional tier. The Signature package includes all Traditional benefits plus Signature-level perks.

VISA BENEFITS VS. ISSUER BENEFITS

Before we go into detail on these benefits, it's important to understand a few basic points:

Most of the features on a typical Visa credit card aren't dictated by Visa at all, but rather by the bank that issued the card (such as Chase, Capital One, Wells Fargo or your local community bank). Rewards rates, bonuses, interest rates and fees are all determined by the issuer.

Visa makes these benefits available on cards that carry the Visa Signature label, but it is up to the issuing bank to decide whether a particular card actually includes a particular benefit.

Many issuers offer their own benefits on top of (or in place of) those offered by Visa. These may be substantially more generous than Visa Signature benefits.

Extended warranty protection

How it works.

Visa's extended warranty protection can add more time to the manufacturer's warranty on items purchase with your Visa Signature card:

For warranties of less than a year, Visa doubles the warranty period.

For warranties of one to three years, Visa adds a year to the warranty period.

For warranties longer than three years, there is no extended warranty benefit.

The maximum coverage is $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per cardholder. Vehicles, real estate, computer software and certain other items are excluded from this coverage. You’ll have to register your purchase with Visa or save the receipt and the original manufacturer’s warranty if you want to take advantage of this protection. File a claim by calling your benefits administrator at 800-397-9010 in the U.S., or 303-967-1093 outside the U.S.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Visa will only extend the manufacturer’s warranty, not improve it. If the manufacturer offers less-than-impressive terms — for instance, if it just covers defects rather than normal wear and tear — don’t expect Visa’s coverage to offer anything more. You’ll also have to show proof that you tried to get the item repaired through the manufacturer first, and getting the manufacturer to cover repairs can be a tedious process.

In some cases, getting a replacement item may be less of a hassle than waiting for a repair. Another alternative is buying an extended warranty or protection plan from the store where you bought the item, which might offer more coverage than the manufacturer's warranty. But, hey — the Visa Signature coverage is free for cardholders, so if all your manufacturer’s repairs are fully covered and shipping is reimbursed right away, it’s worth a try.

Travel and emergency assistance

Travelers needing information or assistance can call a dedicated multilingual hotline 24/7, and benefits specialists will connect them with services. In the U.S., the number is 800-992-6029; see this list for toll-free numbers in other countries. Available services include:

Pre-travel information about such things as immunizations and other health precautions, weather reports, currency exchange rates and visas.

Medical services, including referrals to health-care providers, emergency medical transportation and prescription assistance.

Legal and logistical help, including referrals to lawyers or bail services, document delivery, translation services, emergency replacements for lost tickets and assistance in finding lost luggage.

You'll have to pay for services you request. The phone call is free; whatever help they line up for you will be your responsibility. For example, if you need translation help, the hotline might put you in touch with a local interpreter, help you find a lawyer, or arrange for an ambulance ride, but you’ll have to pay the interpreter, lawyer or ambulance company.

Auto rental collision damage waiver

If you rent a car with your Visa Signature card, you can get additional coverage against physical damage or theft of the rental. This auto rental collision damage waiver, or CDW, applies to expenses that aren’t covered by your own insurance policy. To use the benefit:

Rent the car using your card. Coverage applies to rentals of up to 15 days in your home country or up to 31 days internationally.

Decline the CDW offered by the rental car agency.

Report damage or theft. If the car is damaged or stolen, you have 45 days to report it to Visa Card Benefit Services.

File a claim. You have 90 days to file a claim with supporting documentation. (If you don't have all the necessary documents by then, you have 365 days to provide them.) Required documents are listed on the claim form and include a copy of the rental agreement; a copy of your credit card billing statement showing the rental; information about your personal auto insurance; information about the necessary repairs; and a police or incident report about the accident or theft. Start your claim at eclaimsline.com .

This coverage usually comes on top of your personal insurance. If your rental is damaged or stolen, you'll first file a claim with your personal auto insurer. Visa's protection extends to charges not covered by that, including your deductible. This is known as "secondary coverage."

If you don't have a personal auto insurance policy, Visa's coverage becomes "primary," meaning you'll file the original claim through Visa. Also, some cards offer primary rental coverage in all cases. For example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a Visa Signature, but its rental car coverage is primary. With primary insurance, you don't have to involve your own issuer at all if a rented vehicle is damaged or stolen.

The CDW covers only the rented vehicle. There's no liability protection for damage to other vehicles or for medical costs from an accident. It also doesn't cover your luggage or other belongings inside the rented vehicle. If you back into a pole, the Visa CDW is a nice perk; if you cause an accident that leaves other cars smashed up and people injured, you'll probably be going through your own insurance anyway.

It doesn't cover all vehicles. Passenger cars (economy through luxury class) are covered. SUVs are covered only when driven on the road. Not covered: vans that seat more than nine people, trucks, cargo vans and vehicles classified as "expensive."

It doesn't apply in certain countries. This coverage doesn't apply in Ireland, Israel or Jamaica. Also, some countries (including Australia, Costa Rica, Italy and New Zealand) require that people renting cars purchase a certain amount of insurance; Visa's coverage comes on top of that.

Roadside dispatch

If you have car trouble while on the road, you can call 800-847-2869 at any time, day or night, and Visa will hook you up with a tow truck, locksmith or other service provider. There's no limit to how often you can use the service. You'll pay a flat fee of $69.95 for the service call. Covered services include:

Jump start.

Changing a tire.

Lockout service. This covers the cost of getting you into your car when you're locked out. New keys cost extra.

Towing up to 5 miles. Beyond that, you can be charged extra.

Winching if your car is at least 100 feet from the road. Farther than that, it can be extra.

Fuel delivery of up to 5 gallons. You'll have to pay for the gas on top of the service fee.

On-the-spot repairs or diagnostic services may cost extra. Any additional services once your car is towed somewhere may also cost extra. If you’re a subscriber to a service like AAA already, or if your insurance has a roadside assistance program built in, those could be more affordable options.

Additional Visa Signature benefits

Other services and benefits available to Visa Signature cardholders:

Benefits you 'may' have

As mentioned, some credit card issuers offer perks beyond those provided by Visa. The Visa website highlights several of these extra benefits that "your Visa Signature card may come with," but keep in mind that they are not part of the Visa Signature package. They're dictated by the issuer. They include:

Lost luggage or baggage delay reimbursement.

Reimbursement for Global Entry application fee.

Reimbursement for travel delays, cancellations or interruptions.

Travel accident insurance.

Priority Pass airport lounge access.

Price protection, purchase protection and return protection.

Emergency medical service and medical evacuation.

Some of these benefits are included in the Visa Infinite package.
