When's the best time to see Monday's solar eclipse in Reno and Las Vegas?

T he 2024 solar eclipse is almost here, and while Nevadans won't get to experience full totality unless we travel elsewhere on April 8, we'll still get to see part of the action.

In Reno, a partial solar eclipse will start about 10:20 a.m. with a max partial eclipse at 11:19 a.m. At that point, 35.7% of the sun will be obscured by the moon. The eclipse in Reno will end about 12:20 p.m.

There's a great opportunity to view the eclipse at the University of Nevada's Fleischmann Planetarium.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

"People who aren't getting to travel to totality somewhere, they'll want to join us here at our Star Theater, we'll have some telescopes set up," Paul McFarlane, director of the University of Nevada's Fleischmann Planetarium, told the RGJ. "We'll let people see the eclipse with those — of course, weather permitting and if the clouds cooperate."

Tickets will be available for special screenings of "Totality" inside the planetarium's dome, and eclipse glasses will be available for sale in advance and on the day of the eclipse.

When is the peak eclipse viewing time in Las Vegas?

In Las Vegas, the eclipse will start about 10:15 a.m. with a peak of 11:20 a.m. At that point, 50% of the sun will be obscured by the moon. The eclipse in Vegas will end at 12:30.

Read on for information on when the partial eclipse will hit Nevada and to check out how viewing will differ in other parts of the country.

Iconic Tropicana Las Vegas resort closing to make room for new stadium

travel er rn las vegas

One of Las Vegas’ longest-standing Strip casinos is shuttering its doors for good .

Tropicana Las Vegas is set to close Tuesday, just two days shy of its 67th anniversary. Once a crown jewel on the Strip, the aging property has struggled to stand out in recent decades amid a sea of megaresorts.

A demolition is set to take place later this year to make room for a new Major League Baseball stadium . Once the Tropicana is gone, the only standing Strip resort from the 1950s will be the Sahara .

While the Tropicana's demise is “sad for historians,” according to University of Nevada, Las Vegas, history professor Michael Green , it’s not an unusual move from a city known for tearing down its history to make way for future projects.

“Hotels built in the 1950s were not designed for the 2020s,” Green told USA TODAY. The Tropicana’s closing “reflects Las Vegas changing to keep up with and get ahead of everyone else. … The times have changed.”

‘The city is transforming’

The teardown is bittersweet for Antioco Carrillo, a 56-year-old Las Vegas local who worked in the property’s kitchen when he was 20. It was his first job in the states after immigrating from Mexico in 1987.

While the property has undergone renovations since his time as an employee, Carrillo said walking through the property with his husband this past weekend hit him with a sense of nostalgia.

He snapped photos of the stained glass dome above the casino, the conference center, the pool. He recalled feeling small his first time inside the resort, which felt like a “city within a city.” He thought back to all of his former coworkers, a melting pot of employees from all corners of the world, he said.

“It’s the property that gave me the opportunity to live here,” he said. “But I think it is a positive move, at the end of the day, because the city is transforming.”

Las Vegas' Sahara hotel after 70 years: Take a peek into the property's past

‘One of the elites,’ once upon a time

With a $15 million price tag, the Tropicana was the most expensive Las Vegas resort built to date when it opened in April 1957. Dubbed “the Tiffany of the Strip" as a reference to the famous jeweler, the 300-room property was considered a luxurious retreat.

It received high praise from local media at the time, with the Las Vegas Sun gushing over the “fantastically beautiful” resort with its "colorful, mosaic-tiled entrance" and spacious rooms, while the Las Vegas Review-Journal described the Tropicana as having a “quiet dignity.”

The resort would go on to become well-known for its entertainment. It was the first Las Vegas stage to showcase the magicians Siegfried & Roy as part of the Folies Bergère show – a cabaret show imported from Paris that would go on to entertain tourists with its topless showgirls for nearly 50 years. The property’s Blue Room was another big attraction, hosting big-name jazz performers like Louis Armstrong .

In its early years, the Tropicana was “one of the elites of the Strip,” said Green, who said that in addition to its entertainment offerings, “it was also known as having been opened by the mob.”

While ties to organized crime weren't unusual for Las Vegas casinos, Green said the mob did a poor job of hiding its involvement at the Tropicana. Just one month after the property’s grand opening, the mobster Frank Costello was shot in New York City . A paper in his pocket showed gross win figures from the Tropicana’s casino, connecting him to a skimming operation at the property.

Management changed hands a number of times since then, with the most recent buyers – Bally's Corp. – purchasing the property for $148 million in 2022 .

“I think part of (the property’s decline) is it that it went through several ownership changes when the other hotels were not – which meant different approaches, different plans,” Green said. “Then it was surrounded by these megaresorts. And in a sense, it tried to have its own niche by not being one of them and having amenities – but not the amenities to the degree the others did.”

Demolition planned for fall

The Tropicana’s gaming floor is set to close at 3 a.m. Tuesday, and food and beverage departments are set to close by noon, according to the property’s website . Preparations to tear down the resort will begin “shortly after,” with a tentative demolition date slated for October.

“What they say is, is true. (Las Vegas is) not a sentimental town. When they think they can do something better with the land, they will do that,” said David Schwartz , a history professor at UNLV.

Once the property is torn down, approximately 9 acres are set to go to the Athletics for their new stadium. The MLB team – which currently plays at the Oakland Coliseum – recently released renderings of a 33,000-seat stadium .

But memories of the property will live on. The Tropicana said on social media that it will be collaborating with UNLV, the Neon Museum and the Showgirl Museum to “preserve the heritage and items of sentimental value within the Tropicana.” Additionally, fans of the property can purchase items like guest room furniture, gaming stools and linens at the property’s pre-demolition liquidation sale.

“I think I’ve made peace with the fact that we live in a city where we’re pushing forward with new things,” Carrillo said. “It’s sad to see the hotel go, the whole property go, but it’s exciting to look at the new opportunities this city is going to have.”

Disney Monorail System to be Dismantled by 2028, Removed Entirely

in Disney Parks , Walt Disney World

Disney World's Green Monorail pulling into a station inside Walt Disney World Resort

The iconic monorail is coming to an end.

There are not many places in America where guests can hop on a monorail. Of course, Walt Disney World and Disneyland are known for having monorails as one method of travel.

Monorail at the Magic Kingdom.

The Disney monorail was created by Bob Gurr, a legendary Imagineer who played a significant role in the design and development of many iconic Disney attractions. Gurr’s innovative design for the monorail system was introduced for Disneyland in California in 1959, just in time for the park’s expansion. The monorail quickly became a symbol of futurism and innovation, offering guests a unique and efficient mode of transportation around the park.

Over the years, the Disney Monorail system has expanded to other Disney parks around the world, including Walt Disney World in Florida where it connects three resorts and two theme parks together, and Tokyo Disneyland in Japan, solidifying its status as an iconic feature of the Disney experience.

The Las Vegas monorail is a public transportation system that operates along the Las Vegas Strip, connecting major resorts, attractions, and convention centers. It runs on a single elevated track, providing a convenient and efficient way for visitors to travel between popular destinations along the Strip without having to deal with traffic congestion.

The Las Vegas monorail is operated by a Mark VI tram, much like Disney World’s, which is why both Vegas and Disney are in trouble.

EPCOT Line Monorail at Disney World

In late 2020, the announcement of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) acquiring the Las Vegas Monorail Co. from bankruptcy seemed like a promising development for supporters of the futuristic tram system. However, this move actually signaled the end of the line for the monorail.

What many aren’t aware of is that the LVCVA’s intentions involved a hefty $11 million charge for dismantling the Disney-style monorail system, potentially as soon as 2028, but certainly by 2030.

As Casino.org stated, “The problem is that operating the monorail, for which the LVCVA pays a Los Gatos, Calif. company up to $500K annually, has become like driving a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California SWB Spider. Sooner or later, it will break down and require a replacement part that can’t be obtained because it’s not manufactured anymore.”

Now, the parts needed to repair the monorails are no longer available, as the company who made them, Bombardier, sold its business.

The publication continued, “For a while, monorail executives reportedly rooted for Disney World to upgrade its Mark VI trams so they could buy the retired stock. (The first monorail tracks to operate in Vegas, connecting the MGM Grand and Bally’s from 1995 to 2002, used two retired Disney World Mark IVs.)

Disney's Contemporary Resort at night with a monorail running through the lobby

However, the Mouse House is in the same no-win situation as Las Vegas.

It can buy an all-new monorail system but would need to construct all-new tracks. It’s not impossible for a company to develop a new monorail to fit the existing one’s tracks but nobody is rushing to step up to that very niche plate.”

The purchase of the aging Las Vegas monorail by the LVCVA (Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority) might seem puzzling at first glance. Here’s the explanation: The monorail held a powerful bargaining chip – a noncompete clause. This clause prevented any other company from building a competing off-street transportation system along the Las Vegas Strip.

Ironically, the LVCVA had already committed to a different solution in 2019. They signed a $48 million contract with Elon Musk’s The Boring Company to build the Vegas Loop, an underground tunnel system. The Vegas Loop would likely violate the monorail’s noncompete clause, potentially leading to legal challenges. So, the LVCVA’s acquisition of the monorail appears to be a strategic move to clear the way for their Vegas Loop project.

As for the Disney monorail, The Florida Department of Transportation has initiated the procedure to oversee the regulation of Walt Disney World’s monorail. This action follows months after Governor Ron DeSantis enacted a bill granting the state the jurisdiction to inspect and regulate the privately owned transportation system.

“Being that this is the first time that the State has had oversight, FDOT is doing its due diligence to thoroughly complete the review while ensuring the safety of travelers,” said FDOT District Five Public Information Director Cindi Lane.

Disney World monorail at EPCOT during the International Flower and Garden Festival

FDOT’s Structures Maintenance Office, which inspects hundreds of bridges and other structures across the state, has begun conducting field inspections of Disney’s monorail structure.

While the Mark VI monorails are safe, as we have seen, they are tough to manufacture as their parts are no longer produced, which will make it harder for Disney to continue to maintain. Unfortunately, the House of Mouse is going to have to figure something out, as the monorail is the main method of transportation for many guests into the Magic Kingdom, and operating without it for a long period of time would create a lot of chaos for guests parked at the Ticket and Transportation Center.

At the moment, the monorail at Disney World has no closure date, but it sister monorail in Vegas, certainly does.

Do you think that Disney World would be in trouble if they had to shut down and replace the monorail?
