If your morning routine always starts (and ends) with a hot cup of joe, you’ll be pleased to meet the Stanley Classic Trigger-Action Travel Mug 12oz. Of course, you can use it for other beverages like tea, lemonade, or apple juice (carbonated drinks are not recommended). But we’ve found it to excel most as a portable coffee mug—keeping that liquid gold warm all morning whether we’re at work or on the go.

We’ve been testing the Stanley Classic Trigger-Action Travel Mug 12oz for about three weeks with mostly good things to report.

Let’s get to it.

Features & Usage

Stanley has been around for a long time—since 1913, to be exact—and we appreciate the way their Classic Trigger-Action Travel Mug 12oz marries classic design with modern functionality. Especially with the Hammertone Green colorway we’ve been testing with. We’re digging its earthy vibe that reminds us of campsites, the smell of pine, and simpler times.

At the time of this review, this bottle is also available in four other different colorways—some of which have a more sleek, modern aesthetic if that’s more your style.

The Stanley Classic Trigger-Action Travel Mug is made with durable 18/8 stainless steel that doesn’t hold onto coffee smells or stains. It also touts double-wall vacuum insulation that keeps your coffee or tea hot all morning. Stanley claims it’ll keep drinks warm for up to five hours, and we’re happy to report that this has been a pretty accurate estimate during our testing. It’s done a great job of keeping our java warm enough to savor all morning.

It will also keep drinks cold if you’re in the mood for iced coffee or water. That said, at 12oz, we’ve found the capacity to be a little too small to use as a water bottle. If you’re looking to carry more water and want to stay in the Stanley realm, perhaps check out the Stanley Classic Easy Clean Water Bottle 25oz .

And, weighing in at .68 lbs (or roughly 10.8 oz) empty, the Stanley Classic Trigger-Action Travel Mug is relatively lightweight. Now, it’s not ultralight by any means but it is lighter than some other insulated stainless steel bottles we’ve tested of the same size. ( The YETI Rambler 12oz Bottle With HotShot Cap , for example, weighs 16 oz empty.)

The thing that sets this Stanley mug apart, we think, is its trigger-action lid. With a push-button that stays sealed until you press it, it’s great at preventing leaks if (let’s be honest, when ) it falls over. To get the liquid flowing, you just push down on the trigger button, tip, and enjoy. It’s so easy you can do it with one hand. (This mug makes anyone a coffee-drinking pro.)

We’ve been tossing this mug into our packs, turning it in every direction, knocking it over (both on accident and on purpose), and we haven’t had any leaks so far—the lid stays sealed. Obviously, this is a pro as you don’t have to worry about spills. But we’ve also found it to be a con too—it’s difficult to let that piping hot coffee vent, unless you remove the lid completely. Every now and then we get a sip of coffee or tea that’s almost too hot. This isn’t a deal-breaker, but sometimes it’s a tongue-burner.

Thanks to this lid, the Stanley Classic Trigger-Action Travel Mug 12oz is becoming one of our favorites we’ve tested so far. It may sound small, but not having to fuss with twisting or removing a lid is super convenient—you can grab a sip quick and easy with one hand. This feature really shines while driving (or sitting on the couch swiping through Pack Hacker Instagram stories). And its leak-resistance means you should be safe to keep this thing on your desk near your precious tech (we have been anyway).

Plus, the lid is easy to take apart when in need of a wash. Just untwist the top lid, turn the handle underneath the lid, and pull. The inner piece should come right out. Then throw all three pieces of the mug in the dishwasher (yeah, it’s dishwasher safe) and voila—it’s ready for the next use. We’ve also been washing the mug by hand, however, the lid is not as easy to clean this way as others we’ve tested. There are some small spaces inside the cap that are a little difficult to reach. It’s not a deal-breaker, especially since everything is dishwasher safe, but it’s something to note.

Something else we want to note is that there’s no handle on the outside of this mug. So you can’t clip it to your pack with a carabiner or hook it around a finger if your hands are full but you can’t not bring the coffee. It also keeps the profile of this mug sleek. And since it’s highly leak-resistant, you can toss it in a water bottle pocket—or directly inside your pack—when needed.

As far as durability is concerned, everything is looking good. Like we said at the beginning of this review, we’ve been testing the Stanley Classic Trigger-Action Travel Mug 12oz every day for about three weeks now—mainly to savor our daily dose of coffee. And there are no scratches or dents to report. We haven’t dropped it down any rocky cliffs, but it’s held up well to normal, daily use.

We’ve been loving the trigger cap on this! It’s great for one-handed coffee drinking. This is especially great while driving. You can just pick it up and drink. Other coffee thermoses still have a small opening that hot coffee can splash up through and this just eliminates that problem.

Still loving it, but the lid has been a little hard to clean. We had luck getting in there with a q-tip to clean the tight spaces.

At a Glance:

The first thing that strikes you with the Stanley 12 oz Travel mug is it's sense of durability. The stainless steel body of the mug feels robust and engineered for the outdoors. It looks functional and practical with a very clean, unfussy look about it.

I wanted to try this as my go-to commute mug and also for any day hikes I was planning on during the autumn season so keen to see how well it lives up to it's reputation as "leak-proof" and also interested to see how durable the travel mug is as Stanley offer a "Built For Life" Lifetime Warranty which shows how much faith they have in their own product.

Under The Microscope - putting the Stanley 12 oz Travel Mug through it's paces.

I've been putting the Stanley Travel Mug through it's paces on a daily basis on my commute to work but to give it a good shot outside, we took it hiking in the Fintry hills when it was bucketing with rain, out to the Isle of Arran and for a quick walk in the Ochil hills.

We put the Stanley Travel Mug through our rigorous testing criteria to evaluate it's overall performance and functionality, design and craftsmanship, our own user experience and value for money and overall, the Stanley excelled on the Design and Craftsmanship and User experience criteria, gaining a 5 out of 5.

We ranked 4 on Value for Money as there are a multitude of similar travel mugs on the market as the Stanley 12 oz but with a much lower price point. What the competitors don't have, is the solid and reliable build of the Stanley Travel Mug which makes it worth every penny.

Under the Microscope - Our Testing Criteria

Performance and Functionality 🔥🔥🔥🔥

How does the Stanley 12 oz Travel Mug perform in the real world? In a nutshell, it lives up to its reputation. We took it through various scenarios, from my everyday commute to autumn hikes in the Fintry hills, and it kept my tea as hot as when I had brewed it.

What really helps is that it is leak-proof so whether your throwing it into your bag on the way to work or popping it into the side pocket of your rucksack, you won't find that half your coffee has soaked through your pack. The fact that it's only a 12 oz travel mug makes it incredibly packable and light so it doesn't deter you from making it part of your outdoor gear collection and knowing that it is able to (and does, as we have found) keep your drinks hot for a considerable period of time is a bonus.

Design and Craftsmanship 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

The design of the Stanley Trigger Action Travel Mug is outstanding because it's so understated yet highly functional. This looks like a travel mug that was meant to last and is built with the sole purpose of keeping your drinks either piping hot, cold or even iced. It's slim form means it fits into your hand perfectly and although it's only a 12 oz mug, it has a reassuringly solid weight about it.

Whilst this travel mug from the "Classic" series overall design leans more towards function than style, the craftsmanship is evident all over this mug. From it's robust stainless steel construction, built to withstand the rigours of outdoor expeditions, to the double-wall vacuum insulation able to keep your drinks hot for up to 5 hours.

I enjoy the practical design of this travel mug because it's simple yet effective. The "trigger action" push-button has been designed well and frees up a hand whilst driving and sipping on-the-go. It can be argued that the internal mechanisms of the mug are a bit tricky to clean properly but I haven't found this to be the case as it can easily be popped in the dishwasher.

User Experience 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

I've been using the Stanley Travel Mug on my daily commute for the last few months and it has been with me now on countless outdoor trips and I am really appreciating it's reliability and simple functionality. Not only does it fit my hand comfortably, the Trigger Action push button on the lid makes it really easy to drink from. Starbucks releases new Mother's Day merch, including sky blue Stanley cup

Starbucks has released new goodies for all the mother figures out there – and they're full of color, flowers and more.

The tumblers, mugs and a Stanley cup range in price from $14.95 to $49.95, the coffee chain said in a news release Tuesday.

“The new Mother’s Day drinkware collection is available in a variety of prism and floral designs for mom to enjoy all year long,” the company said.

Mother's Day falls on Sunday, May 12 this year.

Mother's Day gifts: 40 best gifts mom actually wants

Included in this year’s release are the company’s new:

• 14 ounce exotic flowers mug – $14.95
• 24 ounce exotic plants cold cup – $19.95
• 12 ounce yellow prism luster tumbler – $22.95
• 24 ounce purple prism cold cup – $24.95
• 40 ounce sky blue Stanley quencher – $49.95 

Where to get the Mother's Day collection?

The Exotic Flowers Mug, Exotic Plants Cold Cup and Yellow Prism Luster Tumbler are exclusively available at Starbucks stores located inside of hospitals, grocery stores, airports and more, a spokesperson for Starbucks told USA TODAY.

The Purple Prism Cold Cup and Sky Blue Stanley Quencher are available at all Starbucks stores.

Gift options for moms afar and opportunities for reward members

In addition to the latest cup releases, Starbucks has created new gift cards in honor of mother figures that customers can buy at participating Starbucks stores from April 16 to May 14. A digital card will be available online until May 12.  

The company added that Starbucks Rewards members who visit stores with a clean, personal cup in tow will earn 25 stars and 10 cents off their drinks. The deal works in the café, on the Starbucks app or in the drive-thru as long as customers have made at least one Star earning transaction.
