Minis are really cute; whether it’s a toy car, a baby animal, or a doll-sized kitchen set, miniature items have a way of melting my heart every time. My favorite category of all within the “mini” genre is probably a dead-giveaway: makeup. I’ve spent hours in those dangerous check-out lanes of Sephora where exclusively-made miniature skincare, makeup, brushes, and sponges have been placed (brilliantly) for customers awaiting check-out. On several occasions, I’ve gone in for literally only one item, and ended up leaving with dozens of others because of a long check-out line; I just kept finding more of my favorite products in travel sizes.

Because I travel a lot, I dedicate a good amount of time to strategically packing. I usually bring an entire pharmacy with me because I never know what to expect from a foreign country’s drugstores or local shopping, lest I forget something. There’s also nothing worse for me than re-purchasing something I know that I already have at home. If you’re like me and you belong to the COO club (carry-on only), you’ve had your fair share of experiences with an overstuffed bag. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve had to sit on my Rimowa luggage, praying it doesn’t crack, just so that I could zip it into something shaped like an Oreo cookie (the fabric space-expanders spilling out everywhere).

You might find yourself distracted by the shiniest and most exciting products, but don't forget to purchase and pack the everyday items you need, too. Whether your staples include brow gel, sunscreen, or lip gloss, you'll want to have a mini-version of the things you rely on the most, not just the fun extras.

When looking to travel by air, you'll need to adhere to the TSA rules for carry-on cosmetics. You're allowed to bring a total of one quart-sized clear, resealable bag filled with products. Inside this bag, each item needs to be 3.4 ounces or less.

Provided you will use up whatever is contained in your travel-size toiletries, they are worth it. How to Pack the Perfect Travel Skincare Routine, No Matter Where You’re Going

Updated 05/11/23. Prepping for a trip can be hectic enough, the last thing you need is to be stressing over which skincare products to pack. Unfortunately, between being on an airplane and then in a brand new environment, travel can sometimes wreak havoc on your skin if you don’t come prepared.

I’ve written this post to help you take the guesswork out of which products to bring on your trip and give you my best skincare travel tips! As someone who’s on a plane almost once a month (if not more!), I’ve gotten pretty good at packing for every scenario. 

Stick to the Basics (This Isn’t the Time for Experimentation)

When packing skincare for travel, your number one goal should be to keep your skin as balanced and comfortable as possible. This means it’s definitely not the time to bring along any new skincare products you’ve been wanting to try! The last thing you need is to have a bad reaction, or for your skin to be thrown out of whack at a time when it’s already being introduced to so many new variables. 

The first step is to pack your basics (this is especially true if you’re only taking a carry-on and have limited space for liquids). Here are my personal non-negotiable travel skincare products:

• Daytime moisturizer with SPF
• Nighttime moisturizer

If necessary, decant your products into smaller travel containers (I like to use these ones from Cadence and pack them all together in my Truffle Bag ). Even if you’re checking a bag, keep these three products in your carry-on. This way, if your luggage gets lost, you’ll still be able to take care of your skin’s most basic needs. 

Pro Tip: I came up with a travel hack years ago that allows me to pack liquid skincare products without actually classifying them as liquids. Start by generously saturating a toning cloth with your favorite alcohol-free toner, eye makeup remover, or other liquid skincare product. Then, store the cloths in a plastic baggie so you can use them as needed.

Choose Your SOS Products Carefully

Your suitcase is precious real estate so if you do bring more skincare products beyond the basics, choose wisely! The two things I would urge you to take into consideration are 1) which problems you’re trying to avoid (i.e. breakouts, sensitivity, or dryness) and 2) the climate you’ll be traveling to (more on this one later). 

Everyone: If you only have the luxury of bringing one more skincare product, make it an exfoliant. Don’t get too hung up on what kind, just make sure it’s one you’ve used before and that agrees well with your skin. Removing dry, expired skin cells from your face every few days is a good way to “reset” the skin and can help minimize almost any problem you’re prone to.

If you’re prone to breakouts: consider a hydrating face mask that also fights breakouts with ingredients like salicylic acid or tea tree oil. The reason I love this as an SOS product is that it delivers a 1-2-punch: it minimizes breakout activity on the skin while also providing water-based hydration. Even if you have oily skin, airplane travel or traveling somewhere without much humidity can lead to dehydration (which can lead to more breakouts). With one product, you can stay ahead of both issues. 

Additionally, you might want to bring a spot treatment for emergency pimples. If you tend to get cystic acne, bring a non-drying spot treatment . Those more prone to classic whiteheads should opt for something with drying ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or sulfur ( this one can even double for calming bug bites!).

If you’re prone to sensitivity: I would recommend either a soothing serum or face mask you can use as often as needed to keep your skin comforted. A few ingredients I personally love for relieving irritation and sensitivity are water lily extract , algae extract (specifically red marine algae), allantoin , and green tea extract . 

If you’re prone to dryness: bring a facial oil and/or a lipid-rich moisturizing mask . Replenishing your skin’s oils will be key to preventing flakiness and crepey-looking skin, especially if you’ll be riding on an airplane or are going somewhere cold. 

Focus on Skincare Before and After a Flight, Not During

Some people try to prevent the dryness caused by flying on a plane by doing sheet masks or misting their skin mid-flight, but I personally believe this is a waste of time (and that you may end up doing more harm than good ). Instead, focus on what you can do for your skin pre- and post-flight. 

If you can, do a hydrating mask before your flight then layer up on hydrating ingredients in the form of a toner and serum. Then, lock it all in with a moisturizer. If you’re flying during the day, it’s super important that you choose a moisturizer with SPF. You can get a lot of UV damage being that high up, which is why I always try to get a window seat so I can close the shade. Finally, cap everything off with a few drops of facial oil. This will seal in all that hydration and prevent it from evaporating into the dry, cabin air.

Once you arrive at your destination, wash your face and exfoliate to remove the dry skin cells that built up during the flight. If you can, follow up with a hydrating mask to rehydrate fresh skin cells. 

Consider the Climate at Your Destination

Few things can throw your skin off balance as much as heading to a totally different climate than the one you’re used to. 

What to Do If You’re Traveling Somewhere Colder and/or Drier  

If you have dry skin ( Skin Types 7-9 ) : layering rich, oil-based products is essential. You can also consider slugging , which is applying a thin layer of Vaseline or other petrolatum-based product over your moisturizer to create an occlusive seal, just like an oil would. (You also don’t want to neglect your lips , and Vaseline can be great for keeping them from getting chapped.)

If you have oily or combo skin ( Skin Types 1-6 ): keeping your skin hydrated in a cold, dry climate can be a little trickier since you don’t want to layer on too many heavy products. In this case, the best strategy is more layers made up of lighter products. Start by making sure you’re using a cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin. Then, if you can, layer the same way you would before a flight: a hydrating toner, hydrating serum, moisturizer for your skin type, and a facial oil. People are sometimes surprised when I recommend an oil for oily skin types, but it’s all about applying it correctly . The key is gently patting it onto the skin instead of rubbing it in. This will ensure the oil sits on top like a seal to keep everything in instead of settling into your pores.

NOTE: If you’re layering products that contain humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid while in a dry environment, be sure to apply them to damp skin then quickly seal them in with moisturizer. Applying humectants to dry skin in a dry environment will give you the opposite of a hydrating effect and leave your skin more dehydrated than before.

What to Do If You’re Traveling Somewhere Warmer and/or More Humid

If you have dry skin (Skin Types 7-9 ) : the good news is you shouldn’t have to switch your routine up much! The humidity may actually do your skin a favor. One thing to keep in mind if you’re going on a beach vacation is that saltwater can dry out the skin . To combat this, I recommend using a water-resistant sunscreen since they use emollients that will help repel water. 

If you have oily or combo skin (Skin Types 1-6 ): you’ll definitely want to focus on oil control to prevent breakouts. One way to do this is to consider switching over to a more acne-focused cleanser; look for something low-foaming that includes ingredients like salicylic acid to curb oil production. Salicylic acid is also a great ingredient to look for in a serum if you bring one since it’s so effective at keeping pores clean. Beyond this, focus on water-based products with a light texture. For nighttime, use either a gel or oil-free lotion moisturizer. For daytime, look for a sunscreen that doubles as a moisturizer to minimize the number of layers on your skin.

Cleansing oil, as we mentioned earlier, contains oils that effectively remove dirt, debris, and makeup from the skin. These oils dissolve impurities on the skin’s surface, allowing them to be easily rinsed away. In general, oil cleansers, according to Dr. Castilla, are gentler on the skin barrier and less likely to strip natural oils compared to regular facial cleansers. The main ingredients to look out for are plant oils such as grapeseed, sunflower, and argan oils.

Per Dr. Libby, the origins of cleansing oil may have derived from Asian beauty skin care routines, which often employed a double-cleansing method consisting of an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser.

Time for a science lesson: Traditional cleansers use surfactants, such as soap, to remove dirt and excess oil from the skin, along with moisturizing ingredients that deposit on the skin to prevent it from feeling tight and dry. These surfactant-based water cleansers work better on water-soluble particles. “Some cleansing oils also contain surfactants, but the main cleansing component is the oil itself. Oil cleansers tend to foam significantly less than regular face washes due to minimal surfactants,” says Dr. Castilla.

What ingredients and textures to look out for

The texture of cleansing oils can vary. “Some are lightweight and easily spreadable, while others are thicker and heavier and may require more effort to rinse off,” says Dr. Castilla. If possible, she suggests testing the consistency of the formulation before purchase. Fragrance-free options are ideal, as fragrances can be potentially irritating, especially for sensitive and dry skin types. “Try to look for a formulation with relatively few ingredients; less ingredients generally mean there are fewer potential irritants,” she adds. Also, look out for hydrating superstars like glycerin, niacinamide, and colloidal oatmeal that help nourish skin’st moisture barrier.

Cleansing oil is meant to be the first step in cleansing; apply it to dry skin as oil cleansers are especially efficient at removing makeup. Dr. Castilla generally recommends using a cleansing oil once per day, particularly at night, especially if you wear makeup.

“Cleansing oils can be used for essentially all skin types,” says Dr. Castilla. However, she notes that they are most beneficial for those with sensitive, dry, eczema, or mature skin types, as they can benefit from the extra hydration they impart. For oily or acne-prone skin types, she recommends using formulations that can be rinsed away with water without leaving an excessive oily residue.

Cleansing oil also works well on stubborn sunscreen, especially since many mineral formulations are water-resistant. “My pro tip is to use a cleansing oil, as this will effectively cleanse off the sunscreen. Then, if desiring a double cleanse, you can follow this step with a water-based cleanser,” says Dr. Libby.

County supervisors relax ban on trucking oil, a move expected to resolve litigation

Local officials agreed Tuesday to relax bans for trucking and flaring for oil and gas operators, changes that are expected to help resolve litigation against Ventura County.

The county Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to adopt the amendments to the general plan Tuesday. Supervisor Vianey Lopez voted against the move.

With the changes, trucking of oil could be allowed if an operator demonstrates that using a pipeline is infeasible. Similarly, gases from wells must be collected and used or removed for sale or proper disposal unless an oil company can show it is not feasible.

The amendments were required under a settlement agreement with oil interests, which sued the county after a former board adopted the general plan in the fall of 2020. Back then, supervisors narrowly decided to adopt the long-range plan that guides land use, resource protection and development in unincorporated areas.

Changing the policies now would be straying from goals to reduce emissions and achieve other environmental targets, Lopez said.

Supervisor Matt LaVere cited a recent California Supreme Court decision, which he said limited what local government can regulate when it comes to oil and gas operations. He supported the board's decision in 2020, but things have changed, he said.

"I can't in good faith say let's keep fighting this when it is clear to me we are going to lose," the supervisor said Tuesday.

How many lawsuits did the county face?

Agricultural interests also sued over the general plan but reached a settlement with the county last year. A labor group has also settled. 

That left the oil groups: Aera Energy, Western States Petroleum Association, Carbon California, royalty owners and other oil interests. Last summer, a settlement agreement was reached , placing the lawsuits on hold. But the deal was contingent on the changes to trucking and flaring requirements.

New oil and gas setbacks also adopted four years ago remain in place, officials said. The setbacks increased to 1,500 feet between new wells and homes and 2,500 feet between new wells and schools, up significantly from the previous limits.

The settlement only applies to rules for drilling of new wells, not the large number in the county that could be drilled under decades-old permits with few land-use restrictions.

What will happen to the lawsuits?

With the changes made, the oil interests are expected to dismiss their lawsuits with each party paying its ownlitigation costs and attorney fees, according to county officials.

It is unclear how many of those new wells will be proposed in the county, said Jeff Barnes, chief assistant county counsel. None has been requested or approved since 2015, several years before the policies prohibiting trucks took effect. Over the past 30 years, local oil production has dropped, decreasing the likelihood of future applications, he said.

"They just won't be applied very often," he said of the policies.

Any new proposed wells also would have to undergo an environmental review and the county could deny or place conditions on the operator to address potential issues, he said. Those decisions would require public hearings.

Eagles know opponent for 1st-ever NFL game in Brazil. How to get tickets, travel packages

The Eagles will have a marquee matchup when they open the 2024 season with the first-ever NFL game in Brazil.

That's because the NFL announced Wednesday that the Eagles will face the Green Bay Packers on Friday night, Sept. 6, at Sao Paulo's Corinthians Arena.

The Eagles were announced as the home team back in February. Sao Paulo is Brazil's largest city in population with about 12 million residents.

A storied rivalry

The Packers, of course, are one of the NFL's most storied franchises. They finished 9-8 last season and made the playoffs as a wildcard team. They upset the No. 2 seeded Dallas Cowboys 48-32 in the first round of the playoffs before losing 24-21 to the San Francisco 49ers the following week.

Green Bay is led by quarterback Jordan Love, a first-round pick in 2020 who sat for three seasons behind Aaron Rodgers. But Rodgers was traded to the Jets last season, giving Love the chance to start.

The Eagles, meanwhile, are coming off an 11-6 season in which they lost five of their last six games, followed by a first-round loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They revamped a good part of their roster, signing running back Saquon Barkley and adding free agent edge rusher Bryce Huff, linebacker Devin White and safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson among other moves.

The two teams have met 46 times with the Packers holding a 28-18 edge. They last met on Nov. 27, 2022, at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles won that game 40-33.

Why the Eagles-Packers are playing in Brazil

The Eagles last played overseas in 2018, when they beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 24-18 in London. Last season, the NFL issued a directive that it wants its teams hosting an overseas once every eight years.

That's because the NFL is planning to have as many as eight overseas games beginning in 2025. The NFL can do this after going to a 17-game schedule in 2021. That enabled AFC and NFC teams to alternate between having an extra home game each season.

Eagles chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie said at the NFL owners' meetings two weeks ago that the team was willing to give up one of its nine home games this season in order to play the first-ever game in Brazil.

"As part of the international priority, every team is going to host a neutral game," Lurie said. "We stepped up and thought, ‘Let’s do it in South America and Brazil, a really dynamic country ... We are big supporters in trying to make the NFL a more popular game around the world."

The Eagles will still have eight games at Lincoln Financial Field this season. The Eagles know all of their opponents , but the dates and times will be announced sometime in early May.

At last check, round-trip airline fares from Philadelphia to Sao Paulo will cost at least $1,000. The trip takes about 8½ hours of flight time. Sao Paulo is two hours ahead of Philadelphia.
