Not great! Rude staff in London and the worse baggage reclaim I’ve ever seen. Great staff in flight but doubt I’ll fly with them again

You booked my 7 year old son to sit on his own without his mum and dad in s separate row between two unfriendly adult strangers. The plane was disgusting and dirty, aisles and everywhere sticky. The lounge waiting area was filthy carpet and had insufficient seats so we had to sit on it to wait for 35 minutes and my 7 year old sone played on this filthy lounge carpet. The outside of the plane appeared clean. The pilot was helpful with the route and what to expect weather etc.

The seat leg room seemed much tighter on the way home My cheese toasty wasn’t that hot - didn’t realise till half eaten

Bohužel zpoždění let o více než 6 hod, způsobil, že jsme nestihli další let.

Trip was completely cancelled with no other reasonable option for that day; no reason given. I will avoid booking anything with easy jet

The flight boarded a little late but made up the time in flight - much appreciated. The staff were efficient and fairly friendly One of the toilets wasn’t working - having only one functioning toilet for a flight of hundreds isn’t really acceptable. I still find it amazing that the budget airlines can’t even offer free tap water to passengers.

Plane out was great, one back was cramped. Awful. Thankfully great crew!

Perfect timing, perfect departure, lovely crew on the ground and in the air.

Good flight. Take off a little late but make up the time

Everything’s went straight forward, no issues, good service and friendly crew

Left on time and arrived on time both ways, thank you

The flight was 45 mins delayed but the crew provided water and necessities like tissues

Cheap flights as you expect with Ryanair. I would take cheaper flights over entertainment and comfort for short haul travel. Main issue is usually delays at airports. In this case we landed roughly 2hr30 later than planned due to earlier delays with the plane. Not the worst I imagine

We each paid for 10kg checked in luggage. Flying out there were no issues sharing one case (20kg). Not so coming back. Additional £48 charge and unable to provide an explanation of why it was ok on one journey but not the other, or indeed what material difference it makes between 2x10kg cases vs 1x20kg case. Scam, and appalling from Ryanair.

Easy process and good flight experience The food good be better

I didn't like. The seats and the floor were very dirty and it is not the first time

Unfortunately didn't realise how far away Frankfurt Hahn airport is from Frankfurt the city. Outbound flight was delayed by 2.5 hours and no communication at airport, just a whisper emknating through the packed crowd ready to board at the gate as someone read out an email they had received. All rather poor and pathetic

After the flight. Waiting to long to get off the plane

Very very very…… uncomfortable seats /does nor reclain/ and so little space /this was 5:30 hours flight- and quite expensive no longer low cost airline/ 5:30 hours flight and no water or snacks was offered anly very expensive sales.

Was denied to enter the previous plane so couldnt make it to this one

Got rejected to enter the plane because i took calming pills. Im scared of flying and i always take it since 12 years and it was never a problem with other airlines.

Shambolic boarding with ZERO information on why there was a delay. Don't treat customers like sheep. Crew good. Aircraft new. Late departure with minimal information from flight deck.

The flight was 1.30 hour late because of the Police checking 4 passengers. This was not Ryanair fault but was quite ennoying.

The boarding process was fast Uncomfortable seats ,do not recline.

My fligh was suddenly canceled and no ine approached me The web response was the only one and it was poor and not satisfactory Wizz did not take care for moving me and my family to another flight instead and simply gave us back the flight credits which i cant do nothing with !!

The crew was not very friendly or did not seem like very approachable. The plane was quite dirty and it didn’t sound too good when landing.

Food not so good. Need more veggies and whole grain especially the late food. Couldn’t figure out how to use the entertainment system.

Check in was horrendous! Economy took 2 hours before seeing an agent. Business class was 0.5 - 1 hour.

The first class flight itself was first class, however getting to the airport and getting through the airport was agony. The BA flight sat on the taxiway for ages and caused us to miss our connecting flight which meant half a day lost. Our return flight on BA was cancelled so a dawn flight was made and we lost another half day. Goodby BA

In economy and food was ok, but with limited leg space (and I was in a 2 seat configuration) it was difficult to eat with a tiny seat tray. I spilt wine on my trousers. First time on British Air (I usually fly Turkish Air) and in a 777. Heathrow was pleasant but changing terminals awkward.

Starting with the flight Cairo to London the plain was so poor no entertainment at all uncomfortable seats although it’s 5 hours long, then an American airline plain took me from London to Miami it was a bad experience the crew most of flight time not available and they asked us to help our selves for any snacks if we need. From Miami to London actually was perfect flight with a huge plain and perfect crew but from London to Cairo was horrible plain with stiff fixed seats not movable no entertainment or wi fi very poor Menu which is unacceptable for a business class

There was some delay at Heathrow where a machine needed to "start the engines" wasn't available and they couldn't even find the team tasked to do it. Unacceptable. Caused about an hour delay and seemed unnecessary. Also saw several passengers abusing the overhead luggage situation, having too many large bags and not leaving enough space for others. The crew was good and the refreshments were good in quality and quantity.

They cancelled our ticket, gave us no warning, they reissued it 4 days prior to trip and it was cancelled again when we got to the airport- very stressful, the flight was overbooked so they drove us across Milan to malpensa

Great little city hopper plane. Unfussy and roomy. Nice little snack provided too

I've done hundreds of flights in my life, and this flight was one of the best I've ever taken, From beginning to end, everything went smoothly, professionally, and with a smile and friendly attitude from all employees I interacted with. The food was delicious (and free), as were the drinks. There was just a genial and effective way in the way that British Airways organized the flight -that reminded of days in the 70's, 80's, and 90's, when flying was a fun, and exciting adventure. I enjoyed and had confidence in the abilities of the flight crew, I'll be flying British Airways several more times this summer. Thank you so much for the great experience! Cheryl Olso

Some how I got “offloaded” even though I had my boarding pass Food was horrible Staff were nice and cheerful No headphones were provided

The flight was delayed 5 hours and I'm and invalid,I wan a refund for this

The cabin crew on that flight were super fantastic and super helpful. They were so polite and considerate that i felt i travelled with a 5star airline.

Delayed delayed delayed - always with Wizzair. Staff were friendly and well mannered but clearly the company is unorganized and the aircrafts are outdated.

It's a budget airline. Great for short flight. Smooth landing.

4 hr delay and only told less than 2hrs before. Only given water and nuts on the flight as complimentary service. Left to wait in rain before boarding.

To be honest I did not like anything. Communication to why my flight was cancelled mid air 2 and half hours into my flight. Customer service desk were not helpful with providing information or a solution on what can be done.

I have been treated unacceptably by WizzAir aircraft crew in a previous flight, they threatened me and abused me, and I received an OFFICIAL written apology, but only two (2) months later. This flight had no such unacceptable behaviour, but it's not nice to be left waiting in the walkway (from gate to aircraft) for a long time, just so that the 'boarding' appears to be early, even if actual departure is not.

What I liked new airplane Sitting was extremely uncomfortable! Crew not smiley at all Always chewing gum

The flight was cancelled just 4 hours before the take off...

No food on board. Not comfortable. Had to move seats was delayed more than 3 hours.

Which option is cheapest?  You have to go online and see, because each option involves several tickets and the price of each ticket varies like an air fare.  However, at short notice, the ferry options are usually cheaper than Eurostar.

Can you go out one way, back another?   Yes!  Almost all European train fares are priced as one-way, so you can book one-way out on one route and one-way back on another.  Eurostar is the exception where a return fare is cheaper than two one-ways, so book London-Paris or London-Brussels as a round trip if you can.

Can you stop off?   Of course!  Simply book trains either side of the stopover on whatever dates you want.  Each part of these journeys is ticketed separately in any case (for example, the Eurostar, the sleeper train and any onward train), so it's no problem to stop off on the way at any of the key interchange points.

The sleeper train has a Czech air-conditioned Comfortline sleeping-car with nine 1, 2 & 3 bed compartments with washbasin, and three 1, 2 & 3 bed deluxe compartments with en suite shower & toilet.  There are toilets and a shower at the end of the corridor for passengers in regular sleepers.  There are also 4 & 6-berth couchettes.  A light breakfast with tea or coffee is included in the sleeper fare.

A Czech restaurant car is attached to the train between Leipzig (around 06:00) and Prague, if you'd prefer a cooked breakfast.

Prague ► London

A Czech restaurant car is attached to the train between Prague and Leipzig (reached around 22:00), treat yourself to dinner with wine.

This 320 km/h double-deck high-speed train has a cafe-bar, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi.  Book an upper deck seat for the best views, any seat number >60 is upper deck.

Alternatively, if you don't fancy the 5am arrival at Karlsruhe and don't mind a later arrival in London .

You can book the sleeper from Prague to Basel instead, it arrives at Basel SBB at the much more agreeable hour of 07:20.  The 10:34 TGV-Lyria from Basel SBB reaches Paris Gare de Lyon at 13:40, cross Paris by metro and take the 17:12 Eurostar from Paris Nord to London.

How to much does it cost?

London to Paris by Eurostar starts at £52 one-way or £78 return in standard class, £97 one-way, £168 return standard premier (1st class).

Step 1, book London to Karlsruhe at www.thetrainline.com or www.raileurope.com , both easy to use, in €, £ or $, overseas credit cards no problem, small booking fee.  Using one of these sites means you can book everything easily in one place.  About Raileurope .  About Thetrainline .

Booking opens up to 6 months ahead for each of these trains, see more about when bookings open .  I recommend waiting until all trains have opened for booking and times are confirmed before buying a non-refundable Eurostar ticket.

Tip:   You can book from London to Karlsruhe all in one go if you like, but for more control over the connection in Paris, I'd book London-Paris first, add to basket, then book Paris-Karlsruhe and add to basket, ensuring at least an hour between trains.  That way you can allow a more robust connection than the system would give you, and you can see if earlier Eurostars have cheaper prices.

Tip:   If you are making a round trip, London-Paris return fares are significantly cheaper than two one-ways so it's cheaper to book this as a return.  All other trains are one-way ticketed so it makes no difference how you book, and it can be easier to book one way at a time.

Tip:   After booking you can use the Manage booking facility at www.eurostar.com to choose an exact seat from a seating plan, see tips on choosing a seat on Eurostar .

Alternatively, you can book the Eurostar at www.eurostar.com , then book the Paris-Karlsruhe TGV at int.bahn.de .  This is more work and prices should be the same, but there's no booking fee.

Step 2, book the Karlsruhe-Prague sleeper at the Austrian Railways website www.oebb.at (as it's a Nightjet partner route).

Booking opens several months ahead .  You print your own ticket.

You can also try booking at the Czech Railways site www.cd.cz as it's a Czech sleeper train.  Here, the train will appear in the search results twice , both marked No transfers .  The first appearance is the seats carriages marked EC (EuroCity), ignore this.  Click the buy button against the second appearance of this train, with a sleeper & couchette symbol marked EN for EuroNight, and continue.  Use the modify & edit features to adjust the type of couchette & sleeper.  You print your own ticket or can show it on your phone.  However, on recent tests the CD website won't offer online prices or tickets for Karlsruhe-Prague journeys, but you can try.

2. Paris to Karlsruhe by TGV Duplex   See the video

In Paris it's an easy 7 minute 500m walk from the Gare du Nord to the Gare de l'Est for the TGV to Germany.  Sit back with a glass of red and enjoy the ride - book an upper deck seat for the best views.  The train is equipped with power sockets for laptops & mobiles at all seats in both classes, and a cafe-bar serves drinks, snacks & microwaved hot dishes.  The train soon leaves the Paris suburbs behind and speeds across a vast wide open plateau of woods & farmland at up to 320 km/h (199 mph), past picturesque French villages of the Champagne region.  An hour or two later, the train leaves the high-speed line and slowly meanders through pretty wooded hills, the countryside eventually flattening out towards Strasbourg.  On leaving Strasbourg, look out for Strasbourg cathedral on the left with its famously missing second tower.  Minutes afterwards you rumble across the river Rhine into Germany.  Paris Gare de l'Est station guide .

3. Karlsruhe to Prague by Czech sleeper train

This has a modern Czech sleeping-car with 9 standard compartments with washbasin and 3 deluxe compartments with a compact en suite toilet & shower.  Each compartment can be sold with 1, 2 or all 3 beds in use, as single , double and T3 .  There are toilets and a shower at the end of the corridor, and each compartment converts from beds to a private sitting room for the evening & morning parts of the journey.  There is a power socket for laptops & mobiles.  Bedding and towels are provided.  The doors have card-key locks like hotels.  A very safe, civilised and comfortable way to travel!  More about this sleeper train .

This train also has couchettes, basic bunks with rug & pillow, you can book a bunk in either a 6-berth or less crowded 4-berth compartment.  Clean sheets and a pillow are provided, the doors have a normal lock and security lock or chain, there are several European-type 2-pin 240v power outlets in each compartment.  Toilets and washrooms at the end of the corridor.  Couchette compartments are not segregated by gender, as you do not normally get fully undressed, but women can book a berth in a women-only compartment.  More about this sleeper train .  Prague Hlavni station guide .

Option 3 , London to Prague using the Brussels-Berlin Nightjet

Similar in timing & convenience to option 2, but using the new Brussels-Berlin Nightjet sleeper train which starts running 3 days a week from 10 December 2023.  The Nightjet has some sleepers with en suite toilet & shower, and is due to become daily from autumn 2024.

London ► Prague Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays

This comfortable Austrian Nightjet sleeper train has an air-conditioned Comfortline sleeping-car with nine 1, 2 & 3-berth standard compartments with washbasin and three 1, 2 or 3-berth deluxe compartments with shower & toilet. There's a shower at the end of the corridor for passengers in the regular sleepers.  The train has a couchette car with 4 & 6 berth compartments, and an ordinary seats car.  See the Nightjet page for a guide to on-board accommodation, travel tips, photos & video .

There's no restaurant car, but in sleepers or couchettes you can order drinks, snacks and hot dishes from a room service menu, served in your compartment.  The sleeper & couchette fares include a light breakfast with tea or coffee, served in your compartment.

Day 2, travel from Berlin to Prague by EuroCity train , leaving Berlin Hbf at 11:16 and arriving Prague Hlavni at 15:24.

An earlier 09:16 connection is possible, but I'd play safe and book the 11:16.  By all means spend a morning in Berlin and book a later train.

This comfortable air-conditioned EuroCity train has a restaurant car, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi.  Treat yourself to lunch and a beer or two as the train speeds along the scenic Elbe valley south of Dresden, it's a lovely run.  This particular departure is the EuroCity train Hungaria with modern Hungarian carriages, its final destination is Budapest.  More about Berlin-Prague EuroCity trains .

Day 1, travel from Prague to Berlin by EuroCity train , leaving Prague Hlavni at 14:28 and arriving Berlin Hbf 18:43.

There's no restaurant car, but in sleepers or couchettes you can order drinks, snacks and hot dishes from a room service menu, served in your compartment.  The sleeper & couchette fares include a light breakfast with tea or coffee.

How much does it cost?

Fares vary like air fares, book early for the cheapest prices.  On Nightjet & EuroCity, return fares are twice the one-way fare.

Option 4, london to prague using the zurich - prague sleeper.

This sleeper also serves Ceske Budejovice, it's useful if you're heading to Cesky Krumlov, which is just 45 minutes down a branch line from Ceske Budejovice.

The Zurich-Prague sleeper train consists of a single Czech air-conditioned Comfortline sleeping-car with nine 1, 2 & 3 bed compartments with washbasin, and three 1, 2 & 3 bed deluxe compartments with en suite shower & toilet.  There are toilets and a shower at the end of the corridor for passengers in regular sleepers.  There are no couchettes and no restaurant car, so take you own picnic & bottle of wine with you, although a light breakfast with tea or coffee is included in the fare.  See more photos, tips & information about this Prague to Zurich sleeper .

Step 1, book London to Zurich at www.thetrainline.com or www.raileurope.com , both easy to use, in €, £ or $, overseas credit cards no problem, small booking fee.  About Raileurope .  About Thetrainline .

Booking opens up to 6 months ahead for Eurostar, up to 4 months ahead for Paris-Zurich, and usually just 60 days ahead for the Zurich-Prague sleeper, see more about when bookings open .  I recommend waiting until onward trains have opened for booking and times are confirmed before buying a non-refundable Eurostar ticket, unless you're prepared to take a calculated risk.

Tip:   You can book from London to Zurich all in one go if you like, but for more control over the connection in Paris, I'd book London-Paris first, add to basket, then book Paris-Zurich and add to basket, ensuring at least an hour between trains.  That way you can allow a more robust connection than the system would give you, and you can see if earlier Eurostars have cheaper prices.

Alternatively, you can book the Eurostar at www.eurostar.com , then book the Paris-Zurich TGV-Lyria at www.sncf-connect.com .  This is more work and prices should be the same, but there's no booking fee.

Step 2, book the Zurich-Prague sleeper online at the Czech Railways website www.cd.cz .  Booking normally opens 60 days ahead .

Escorted tours :  If you'd like to travel with a convivial group of travellers escorted by a professional tour guide, the operators to check are Great Rail Journeys ( www.greatrail.com , in the UK call 01904 527 120) and Rail Discoveries , www.raildiscoveries.com , 01904 730 727.  Both have various escorted tours from the UK to Prague by train, with departures on a variety of dates.

Option 5, London to Prague by day trains with overnight stop

If you prefer daytime trains and a hotel to sleepers, this is the option for you.  I recommend the route via Brussels, Cologne & Berlin as it involves fewest changes, all the trains are high-quality with restaurant car, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi and there's great scenery along the river Elbe south of Dresden.  This route offers interesting stopover opportunities too.  You can choose to stop overnight in either Brussels, Cologne (where the station is right next to the cathedral and a few minutes walk from the Rhine) or Berlin, where the station is a short walk from the Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate .

London ► Prague with overnight stop in Brussels

Leave Brussels Midi 06:23 by ICE3 , change at Cologne Hbf onto an ICE2 & at Berlin Hbf onto a EuroCity train , arriving Prague Hlavni 19:24.

Leave Brussels Midi 08:23 by ICE3 , change at Cologne Hbf onto an ICE2 & at Berlin Hbf onto a EuroCity train , arriving Prague Hlavni 21:24.

The ICE trains have a restaurant car, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi.  The EuroCity train also has a restaurant car & free WiFi, treat yourself to dinner as the train meanders along the scenic River Elbe south of Dresden.

London ► Prague with overnight stop in Cologne

Day 1, travel from London to Cologne by Eurostar & ICE3 , see the London to Cologne timetable on the Germany page .

For example, you can leave London St Pancras by Eurostar at 15:04, change at Brussels Midi onto a superb ICE3 with restaurant car, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi, arriving Cologne Hbf at 20:15.

By all means travel earlier for a pleasant evening in Cologne.  For dinner, I recommend the Brauhaus Sion, 5 minutes walk from the station .

Day 2, travel from Cologne to Prague by ICE2 & EuroCity train , check times at the German Railways website int.bahn.de .  For example:

Leave Cologne Hbf at 07:48 by ICE2 , change at Berlin Hbf onto a EuroCity train to Prague Hlavni , arriving 17:24.

Leave Cologne Hbf at 09:48 by ICE2 , change at Berlin Hbf onto a EuroCity train to Prague Hlavni , arriving 19:24.

It's a comfortable journey across Germany on a superb ICE2 train to Berlin Hbf with restaurant car, bar, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi, then comfortable EuroCity train with restaurant car & free WiFi to Prague Hlavni .

Treat yourself to lunch in the restaurant car, or take your own food and a bottle of wine.  The train from Berlin to Prague makes a lovely scenic meander along the river Elbe south of Dresden - have your camera ready!  See the Berlin to Prague page with timetable, photos & tips .

London ► Prague with overnight stop in Berlin

Day 1, travel from London to Berlin by Eurostar & ICE , see the London to Berlin timetable on the Germany page .

For example, leave London St Pancras by Eurostar at 11:04, change at Brussels Midi onto a superb ICE3 to Cologne Hbf , then take an ICE2 to Berlin Hbf arriving 21:02.

Stay overnight in Berlin.   Top choice here is the InterCity Hotel Berlin Hbf (my favourite), only 200m from Berlin Hbf 's main entrance, relatively inexpensive with great reviews, or if you're in the money, the excellent 5-star Steigenberger Hotel just outside the station.  If you're on a budget, the cheaper 3-star Motel One Berlin-Hbf is behind the station or use www.hostelworld.com .  Of course, if you really want to push the boat out, the famous Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin is next to the Brandenburg Gate just 17 minutes walk away.

Day 2, travel from Berlin to Prague by EuroCity train , see the timetable here .

For example, the 07:16 from Berlin Hbf arrives Prague Hlavni 11:24, but by all means have a leisurely breakfast and book a later train, see the timetable here .

Treat yourself to lunch in the restaurant car, or feel free to take your own food and a bottle of wine.  Trains link Berlin and Prague every two hours with a lovely scenic meander along the river Elbe south of Dresden - have your camera ready!  See timetable, photos & tips for the Berlin to Prague train ride .

Prague ► London with overnight stop in Brussels

Leave Prague Hlavni 06:28 by EuroCity train , change at Berlin Hbf onto an ICE2 & at Cologne Hbf onto a ICE3 , arriving Brussels Midi 19:35.

Leave Prague Hlavni 08:28 by EuroCity train , change at Berlin Hbf onto an ICE2 & at Cologne Hbf onto a ICE3 , arriving Brussels Midi 21:35.

The EuroCity train has a restaurant car & free WiFi, treat yourself to lunch as the train meanders along the scenic River Elbe south of Dresden.  The ICE trains have a restaurant car, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi.

Both these departures have robust connections in Berlin & Cologne, but the earlier one would be my preference, with wiggle room in the event of delay. The later departure involves the last train of the day from Cologne to Brussels.  Incidentally, it's theoretically possible to travel from Prague to London in a day (just!) if you leave Prague on that earlier departure, but with no leeway in case of delay I recommend stopping overnight in Brussels.

Prague ► London with overnight stop in Cologne

Day 1, travel from Prague to Berlin by EuroCity train with restaurant car in around 4h08, then Berlin to Cologne by superb ICE2 taking another 4h23.  For example:

Leave Prague Hlavni at 10:28, change at Berlin Hbf & arrive Cologne Hbf at 20:10.

Leave Prague Hlavni at 12:28, change at Berlin Hbf & arrive Cologne Hbf at 21:41.

You can check times at the German Railways website int.bahn.de , by all means travel earlier for more of an evening in Cologne.  For dinner, I recommend the Brauhaus Sion, 5 minutes walk from the station .  See information, photos & tips for the Prague to Berlin train .

Day 2, travel from Cologne to Brussels by ICE3 with bistro-restaurant car, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi, then Brussels to London by Eurostar , see the Cologne to London timetable on the Germany page .

For example, you can leave Cologne Hbf at 09:42, change at Brussels Midi and arrive London St Pancras at 14:05.

Prague ► London with overnight stop in Berlin

Day 1, travel from Prague to Berlin by EuroCity train in just 4 hours, see timetable, photos & tips for the Prague to Berlin train .

On most days you'll find a EuroCity train leaving Prague Hlavni at 16:28 arriving Berlin Hbf at 20:43, but by all means book an earlier train.

The train has a restaurant car & free WiFi, with great scenery along the river Elbe between Prague & Dresden.

Day 2, travel from Berlin to Cologne by superb ICE2 , on to Brussels by ICE3 , then to London by Eurostar , see the Berlin to London timetable on the Germany page .  For example:

Leave Berlin Hbf at 06:57 every day, change at Cologne Hbf & Brussels Midi , arriving London St Pancras at 16:57.

Leave Berlin Hbf at 08:57 Mondays-Fridays, change at Cologne Hbf & Brussels Midi , arriving London St Pancras at 18:57.

Leave Berlin Hbf at 10:57 Mondays-Fridays, change at Cologne Hbf & Brussels Midi , arriving London St Pancras at 19:47.

Leave Berlin Hbf at 12:57 Mondays-Fridays & Sundays, change at Cologne Hbf & Brussels Midi , arriving London St Pancras at 21:57.

When does booking open?

Booking for Eurostar opens up to 6 months ahead, sometimes up to 11 months.

Onward trains from Brussels to Germany open for booking up to 6 months ahead, but significantly less than this when the mid-December timetable change intervenes.  I recommend waiting until all trains are open for booking before committing to a non-refundable Eurostar ticket.  More about when booking opens .

If you're overnighting in Brussels:

Step 1, book the Eurostar from London to Brussels & back at www.eurostar.com .

If you're returning, make sure you book this as a round trip as Eurostar return fares are significantly cheaper than two one-ways.  Beyond Brussels fares are all priced as one-way so it makes no difference.  You print your ticket or can load it into the Eurostar app on your phone.

Step 2, book from Brussels to Prague using the German Railways website int.bahn.de .

To get the suggested timings with robust connections via Berlin and a good-value German Railways through ticket, click Stopovers and (a) change Transfer time from normal to 30 minutes , (b) enter Brussel Noord as stopover 1 and (c) enter Berlin Hbf as stopover 2, leaving length of stay as zero in both cases.

You enter Brussel Noord as a zero-duration stopover so that only journeys using DB's ICEs appear.  DB only offers Brussels-Prague through tickets via their own ICEs, not via the competing Eurostar (formerly Thalys) trains which don't call at Brussels Noord.  Logical when you know!

If you're overnighting in Cologne:

Buy tickets at www.raileurope.com .  This way, you can book all your tickets together in one place.

Anyone from any country can use www.raileurope.com , in plain English, overseas credit cards accepted and fares shown in multiple currencies. There's a small booking fee.  Who are Raileurope.com?

First book your ticket from London to Cologne.  If you're returning, book London to Cologne as a round trip because Eurostar return fares are significantly cheaper than two one-ways.  Add this to your basket.

Then book from Cologne to Prague one-way for the following day, add to basket, and (if returning) book from Prague to Cologne one way for the day prior to your Cologne-London journey, add this to your basket and check out.

You print your own tickets, or after booking you can load the Eurostar ticket into the Eurostar app and show the DB ticket on your phone.

If you're overnighting in Berlin:

First book your ticket from London to Berlin.  If you're returning, book London to Berlin as a round trip because Eurostar return fares are significantly cheaper than two one-ways.  Add this to your basket.  Then book from Berlin to Prague one-way for the following day, add to basket, and (if returning) book from Prague to Berlin one way for the day prior to your Berlin-London journey, add this to your basket and check out.

If you're overnighting in different cities out and back, book like this:

First use www.raileurope.com to run some dummy enquiries to find the combination of trains you want from London to Cologne and from Berlin to London.  Then book London to Brussels & back and add to basket, to benefit from Eurostar's cheaper return fares.  Then book one-way tickets from Brussels to Cologne, Cologne to Prague, Prague to Berlin and Berlin to Brussels on the trains you want, adding each ticket to your basket, then check out.

Booking tips

Fares are dynamic like air fares, so book early for the cheapest prices and avoid busy days such as Fridays or Sunday afternoons.

Is it a through ticket?

No, as there are no through tickets from London to anywhere beyond Paris or Brussels any more, DB's Sparpreis London fares were discontinued in March 2020 .  But www.raileurope.com will seamlessly sell you a Eurostar ticket from London to Brussels plus an onward German Railways ticket from Brussels to Cologne or Berlin, then it'll sell you a separate German Railways ticket from Berlin to Prague for the following day.

Seat reservations

About the 20-minute connections (sometimes less) between Eurostar & ICEs at Brussels Midi

The slick 20-minute connection in Brussels between Eurostar and an onward ICE, sometimes less than this, is usually a recognised connection which lots of people make.  It's not usually a problem, especially if you use the Brussels Midi short cut between platforms .

Even though the system sells you separate tickets either side of Brussels, you are protected by the Railteam Promise/HOTNAT so if there's a delay and you miss the connection you will be allowed to travel on later onwards trains at no extra charge.

How to buy a connecting ticket from other UK towns & cities:   See the advice on special add-on tickets here .

A cheaper way to buy tickets

If you're overnighting in Brussels one way or round trip, ignore this section as I've already told you to use eurostar.com then int.bahn.de.  But if you're overnighting in Cologne or Berlin, or different places outward and return, read on.

This is more work as it means using two websites, but there are 3 advantages:  First, you don't pay any booking fee.  Second, you can use the Stopover feature at int.bahn.de to book a Brussels to Prague through ticket with an overnight stop in Cologne or Berlin which is cheaper than buying two separate tickets.  And third, int.bahn.de lets you select your seat from a seat map on ICE trains .  This is the way I'd book myself.

Before booking for real, do a dry run on both sites to check availability & prices and to find a combination of trains that works for you.  I'd also check that your outward Eurostar and ICE are a recognised connection by checking that they appear together when you run a London to Cologne enquiry at int.bahn.de - read the paragraph about the 20-minute connection in Brussels in the previous section.

Step 1, go to www.eurostar.com and book your Eurostar from London to Brussels (and back, if returning).  You print your own ticket or can load it into the Eurostar app on your phone.  Eurostar return fares are significantly less than two one-ways, so if you're coming back, make sure you book this as a round trip.  After booking you can use the Eurostar Manage Booking system to select an exact seat on Eurostar .

Step 2, book from Brussels to Prague at the German Railways website int.bahn.de .

Fares are all priced as one-way, so if you're returning you'll find it easier to book one way at a time, in fact you'll need to book one way at a time if you're overnighting in different cities on the way out and the way back.

To get robust connections you need to click Stopovers and change Transfer time from normal to 30 minutes.

You should then enter Brussel Noord as stopover 1 with length of stay left as zero, and Cologne Hbf or Berlin Hbf as stopover 2, with a suitable length of stay for an overnight stop, say 12 hours.  Adjust the departure time & length of stay to get the trains you want either side of Berlin.  This will get you a Brussels to Prague through ticket with an overnight stop in Berlin or Cologne included.

You print your own ticket or can show it on your phone.  I recommend registering when prompted so you can log in and check your bookings or re-print tickets at any time.

Railbookers are a train travel specialist who can put together a UK-Norway trip for you as a package, including rail travel, hotels & transfers.  You'll find a range of suggested tours & holidays on their website which can be varied or customised to your requirements.  As you're booking a package, they'll take care of you if anything happens to one part of the itinerary such as a strike or delay.  One of their most popular trips is Ultimate Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest with train travel from the UK - it can be customised to include train travel both ways, just ask.  Another top seller is their holiday to Berlin & Prague with travel to & from London by train.

2. Brussels to Cologne by ICE3

Germany's superb ICEs have a bistro-restaurant car, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi.  In 1st class, bistro orders are taken at your seat.  50 minutes after leaving Brussels the ICE calls at Liège, where you can admire the impressive station designed by celebrity architect Santiago Calatrava.  As you approach Cologne Hbf you'll see the twin towers of Cologne Cathedral on the right, next to the station.  More about ICE3 trains .  Brussels Midi station guide .  Cologne Hbf station guide .

3. Cologne to Berlin by ICE2

ICE2 trains have a restaurant car, bar car, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi. In 1st class, bistro orders are taken at your seat.  Immediately after leaving Cologne Hbf , the train crosses the Hohenzollern bridge over the Rhine.  It passes through the industrial Ruhr via Wuppertal & Hamm.  After leaving Hannover, the train passes non-stop through Wolfsburg - look out for the original Volkswagen factory on the left, built in 1938.  The train then travels at up to 280 km/h (174 mph) on the high-speed line to Berlin Hbf , where it arrives at the low-level platforms.  More about ICE2 trains .  Cologne Hbf station guide .  Berlin Hbf station guide .

4. Berlin to Prague by EuroCity train

This comfortable air-conditioned EuroCity train has a restaurant car, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi.  Treat yourself to lunch and a beer or two as the train speeds along the scenic Elbe valley south of Dresden.  More about these Berlin-Prague EuroCity trains .

Option 6, London to Prague with overnight stop in Paris or Munich

This is potentially the second cheapest option, London to Prague from as little as €74.  Like option 1 it involves daytime trains rather than sleepers with an overnight hotel stop, this time in Paris or Munich.

London ► Prague with overnight stop in Paris

London ► prague with overnight stop in munich, prague ► london with overnight stop in paris.

If you left Prague at 09:35, there's usually a 15:46 from Munich Hbf with a change in Stuttgart, arriving Paris Gare de l'Est 22:13.

Prague ► London with overnight stop in Munich

Day 2, travel from Munich to London, either via Paris or via Brussels as shown on the London to Germany page .

Step 1, book the London-Paris Eurostar at www.eurostar.com .  You print your own ticket or can use the Eurostar app on your phone.

Booking opens up to 6 months ahead for Eurostar (sometimes longer), 4 months ahead for Paris-Munich and 90 days ahead for Munich-Prague.  I'd wait until booking is open for all trains so times can be confirmed before buying a non-refundable Eurostar ticket, unless you're prepared to take a calculated risk.  All these fares are dynamic like air fares, cheaper in advance and on less popular days or dates, more expensive on the day.  More about when booking opens .

Tip:   If you are making a round trip, London-Paris return fares are significantly cheaper than two one-ways so it's cheaper to book the Eurostar as a return.  All other trains are one-way ticketed so it makes no difference how you book, and it can be easier to book one way at a time.

Step 2, book the Paris-Munich journey at German Railways int.bahn.de .  You print your own ticket or can show it on your phone.

Step 3, book the Munich-Prague train at Czech Railways site www.cd.cz , as this is the only site that sells these cheap fares.  You print your own ticket or can show it on your phone.

Eurostar trains link London & Paris in 2h20, travelling at up to 300 km/h (186 mph).  There are two bar cars, power sockets at all seats and free WiFi.  Standard Premier and Business Premier fares include a light meal with wine (or breakfast, on departures before 11:00).  There's a 30-minute minimum check-in as all border formalities are carried out before you board the train.  More about Eurostar & check-in procedure .  St Pancras station guide .  Paris Gare du Nord station guide .

2. Paris to Munich by TGV Duplex   See video guide

Minutes afterwards you rumble across the river Rhine into Germany, before heading on to Stuttgart & Munich.  Paris Gare de l'Est station guide .  Munich Hbf station guide .

3. Munich to Prague by express train.   More about trains from Munich to Prague

Option 7, London to Prague via the Harwich -Hoek night boat

The ferry alternative!  If Eurostar is expensive, especially at short notice, the rail & sail fare is usually cheaper.  The ferry from Harwich can be more convenient if you live in East Anglia, there's even a direct train from Cambridge to Harwich to connect with the night boat.  It's also the route to use if you want to avoid the Channel Tunnel or if there are strikes in France.  Or you may simply prefer a leisurely overnight cruise in a cosy private cabin with toilet, shower & satellite TV, an onward train to Berlin next day, overnight stop, then a scenic ride to Prague along the Elbe river valley.  A great way to reach Prague, four capital cities in one trip!  Alternatively, enjoy a day in Rotterdam or Amsterdam, then take the European Sleeper to Prague.

London, Cambridge, Harwich ► Prague using day trains

The ferry sails at 23:00 and arrives at Hoek van Holland at 08:00 Dutch time next morning.  All passengers travel in cosy private cabins with en suite toilet, shower & satellite TV.  Deluxe Comfort class & Captains class cabins are also available, and there's free WiFi in the lounges, bars & restaurants on 9 deck.  You can get on board the ferry before 9pm, have a late dinner in the restaurant and settle into your cabin.

On arrival at Hoek van Holland, the metro station is right next to the ferry terminal.  Walk down the gangway into the ferry terminal, through passport control, out of the terminal and across the road to the metro station.

Take the metro to Schiedam Centrum and change onto an InterCity train to Amsterdam Centraal , arriving 10:25.

See the Stena Line Rail & Sail page for full details .  Rail & Sail tickets are valid not just from London but from any Abellio Greater Anglia railway station, for example, Cambridge, Norwich or Chelmsford.

Day 2, travel from Amsterdam to Berlin by Intercity train , leaving Amsterdam Centraal at 13:00 and arriving Berlin Hbf at 19:25.

Tip:   Take an evening stroll past the Reichstag building to the Brandenburg Gate , just 17 minutes walk from the station.

For example, the 07:16 from Berlin Hbf will get you to Prague Hlavni at 11:24, there's great scenery along the Elbe river valley south of Dresden and it arrives just 15 minutes walk from Prague's historic old town.

Or there are later trains at 09:16, 11:16 and so on.  More photos, tips & info for the Berlin to Prague train ride .  Map of Prague showing stations .

The train has 5 & 6 berth couchettes & a sleeping-car with 1, 2 & 3 bed compartments with washbasin.  A light breakfast is included in sleepers, extra in couchettes.  Enjoy the scenic run along the Elbe river valley over breakfast between Dresden & Prague.  More about the European Sleeper .

Prague ► Harwich, Cambridge & London using day trains

Day 2, evening, travel from Amsterdam to London overnight by Stena Line Rail & Sail .

You leave Amsterdam Centraal on the 18:35 Dutch intercity train to Schiedam Centrum where you change onto the frequent metro train to Hoek van Holland Haven.  At Hoek van Holland, the metro station is right next to the ferry terminal.  You check in for the ferry then walk up the gangway onto the ship.

The ferry sails at 22:00 and arrives at Harwich International at 06:30 next morning, UK time.  All passengers travel in a snug private cabin with shower, toilet & satellite TV.   At Harwich, you walk off the ship and onto the station to take a train on to London arriving around 08:56 (day 3 from Prague) or to Cambridge arriving 09:41 (10:39 on Sundays).  See the Stena Line Rail & Sail page for full details .

Prague ► Harwich, Cambridge & London using the European Sleeper

Day 1, travel from Prague direct to Amsterdam or Rotterdam by European Sleeper , leaving Prague Hlavni at 18:04 on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Sundays, arriving Amsterdam Centraal 06:26 or Rotterdam Centraal 07:32 next morning.

Day 2, spend a pleasant day at leisure in Amsterdam or Rotterdam.

Day 2, evening, travel from Amsterdam or Rotterdam to London overnight by Stena Line Rail & Sail .

Coming from Amsterdam, leave Amsterdam Centraal on the 18:35 Dutch intercity train to Schiedam Centrum where you change onto the frequent metro train to Hoek van Holland Haven.  At Hoek van Holland, the metro station is right next to the ferry terminal.  You check in for the ferry then walk up the gangway onto the ship.

Coming from Rotterdam, simply take the frequent metro from Eendrachtsplein metro station to Hoek van Holland Haven at around 19:30, journey time 33 minutes.

Step 1, book from London or any Greater Anglia station to Hoek van Holland at www.stenaline.co.uk/rail-and-sail/to-holland .

This is a special Stena Line Rail & Sail ticket, see the Stena Line Rail & Sail page for more tips & information on how to buy one.

You buy the metro ticket from Hoek van Holland to Schiedam or Rotterdam at the metro station using the ticket machines or simply by touching in & out with any contactless bank card.

Step 2 if using daytime trains:

Book from Schiedam Centrum to Prague using the German Railways website int.bahn.de like this:

To get Schiedam Centrum to Prague with a robust connection in Amsterdam and an overnight stop in Berlin, enter Schiedam Centrum to Prague, then click Stopovers.   Enter Amsterdam Centraal as the first stopover with length of stay 1 hour, enter Berlin Hbf as the second stopover with length of stay as (say) 14 hours.  Set departure time from Schiedam as 10:00.  Run the enquiry.

Adjust the length of stay as necessary to get the trains you want between Amsterdam & Berlin and (the following morning) Berlin & Prague.

Incidentally, even train-specific Sparpreis or Super Sparpreis tickets are good for any train on the Schiedam-Amsterdam part of this journey, so when you get to Schiedam you can take the next available train to Amsterdam, you don't have to wait for the one specified on your ticket.

If can't get your head around this, just use int.bahn.de to book Amsterdam-Berlin as one ticket and then Berlin-Prague as another ticket next day, although that usually costs a little more.

Booking opens up to 6 months ahead .  I recommend registering when prompted so you can log in and check your bookings or re-print tickets at any time.  You print your own tickets or can show them on your phone.

Step 2, if using the European Sleeper:

Book from Rotterdam or Amsterdam to Prague at www.europeansleeper.eu .

Step 1, London to Amsterdam by train & ferry

A train takes you from London's Liverpool Street station or from Cambridge directly to the ferry terminal at Harwich.  You walk off the train, into the terminal, get your boarding card & cabin key at the Stena Line check-in desk and walk straight onto the overnight ferry to Hoek van Holland.  The superferry Stena Britannica is the largest ferry of its kind in the world.  Have a late dinner in the restaurant, retire to bed in a private cabin with en suite toilet & shower and satellite TV.  At Hoek van Holland, you walk off the ship, through passport control and straight onto the station for the frequent metro train to Schiedam & Rotterdam.  Change at Schiedam Centrum for a Dutch Railways (NS) train to Amsterdam Centraal .  The journey from London to Holland is explained in detail on the Stena Line Rail & Sail page .  See the video .

Option 8, London to Prague via the Harwich -Hoek day boat

It's an early start from London, but Stena Line's Harwich to Hoek van Holland daytime crossing connects nicely with the 3-times-a-week European Sleeper from Rotterdam to Berlin, for an onward train to Prague.  Like option 7 above, it can be cheaper than using Eurostar especially at short notice.  And what's not to like about a leisurely cruise across the North sea on the rock-steady 63,000 ton Stena Line superferry, an overnight sleeper train to Berlin then a onward train ride to Prague along the scenic Elbe river valley?

London & Harwich ► Prague

Step 1, travel from London to Harwich by train.

Buy a ticket using the ticket machines or simply touch in and out with any contactless bank card.  The ferry terminal is right next to Hoek van Holland Haven metro station.  Walk into the terminal and check in at the Stena Line desk.  You'll need to leave downtown Rotterdam around 12:00 Monday-Friday or 11:30 Sundays, allowing for travel time and ferry check-in.

Other Czech destinations

Train travel in the czech republic.

You can easily reach anywhere in the Czech Republic by train, travelling from London to Prague as shown above , then using domestic Czech trains onwards from Prague.

Brno is closer to Vienna than Prague, so consider travelling from London to Vienna using any of the options shown here , then catching a train to Brno.

int.bahn.de will give you train times within the Czech Republic, and www.cd.cz (change the Czech flag to the UK flag top right for English) will also give you fares and sell you tickets.

There is one main station in Prague, Praha Hlavni, near the city centre, see the Prague Hlavni station guide .

Trains run regularly, at least every hour or two, from Prague to all the places shown in the Key Destinations section below.  You don't have to buy a ticket in advance, just book as far as Prague then buy an onwards ticket at the station when you get to Prague, this is easy - you can pay on board the train if you find the conductor immediately, and don't mind paying an extra CZK 40 (about €1.50).  Or you can buy online at www.cd.cz .

Seat reservation is compulsory for the front-rank SuperCity Pendolino trains between Prague and Ostrava, but reservation is unnecessary on almost all other Czech Railways trains, so they cannot 'sell out', just turn up, buy a ticket and hop on.

Key destinations

Prague to Ostrava by train takes about 3h10, fare about 489 Kc (£16).  The best services are the tilting pendolino SuperCity trains, which are air-conditioned with bar car, see the photos below.  In addition to the regular Czech Railways (CD) trains, two private operators now link Prague and Ostrava, RegioJet ( www.regiojet.cz ) and Leo Express ( www.le.cz ).  Unlike CD's tickets, tickets for both Regiojet & Leo Express automatically include a reservation but are only valid on the specific train you book.

Prague to Plzen by train takes about 1h35, fare about 130 Kc (£4).

Prague to Brno by train takes about 2h40, fare about 250 Kc (£7).

Český Krumlov

Coming from the UK, you can get off the Zurich-Prague sleeper at Ceské Budejovice and catch the branch line train to Ceské Krumlov run by GWTR, see the London-Prague by sleeper section above .  Otherwise, travel to Prague.  Prague to Ceský Krumlov takes about 3h40 with a change at Ceské Budejovice, although there's now a direct train leaving Prague at 09:21.  The fare is about 250 Kc (£7).

Alternatively, you can travel from London to Linz in Austria ( see the London to Austria page ) then travel by local trains from Linz to Ceský Krumlov with one easy change at Ceské Budejovice.  Use www.cd.cz to find train times & tickets from Linz to Ceské Budejovice, pay for the GWTR local train either at the station in Ceské Budejovice from the green-and-orange GWTR ticket kiosk or on board the train from the self-service machines which take cash or contactless MasterCard & Visa.

Karlovy Vary

Prague to Karlovy Vary takes about 3 hours 20 minutes by train, the  fare is about 250 Kc (£7).  However, if you're travelling from London, Paris or Amsterdam, change trains at Usti nad Labem, an hour before arriving in Prague, for a local train to Karlovy vary.  This will save time over going into Prague and out again.  Use http://bahn.hafas.de to find train times.  You'll find it easier to book to Usti nad Labem, then buy a local ticket to Karlovy Vary when you get to Usti.  Similarly, on your return journey, travel from Karlovy Vary to Usti nad Labem and pick up the sleeper to Cologne & Amsterdam, or the EuroCity to Berlin, there.

Buying tickets for trains within the Czech Republic:  www.cd.cz

You can buy tickets for train journeys within the Czech Republic at www.cd.cz , complete with seat reservation at cheap Czech prices with no booking fee.  You print your own ticket or (for domestic journeys) you can show it on your phone.  www.cd.cz will also book international trains from Prague to neighbouring countries, including Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava, Dresden, Berlin, Munich, Krakow & Warsaw also at cheap prices.  It can also book inward international tickets to Prague, except for journeys from Poland and Ukraine.  Tickets to or from Germany, Austria, Slovakia or Hungary can safely be booked at www.cd.cz in either direction.

Visiting Prague

It's an easy walk from Prague's main Hlavni station to the old town and the famous Charles Bridge, as you can see from the map.  For Prague bus & metro information see www.dpp.cz or see this link .  For Prague tourist information see www.praguewelcome.cz .  Map of Prague .  Prague Hlavni station info .

Pass or point to point?

Let's be clear, a pass will not save money over the cheapest point-to-point advance-purchase fares you might see if you book a few months ahead.  But when point-to-point fares are expensive (for example, at short notice) OR you want flexibility, for example the ability to change your mind, re-route or reschedule as necessary, a pass might be what you need.

If flexibility is what you want, buy the pass.  If it's about saving money, you'll have to check point-to-point prices and do the maths.

It's worth doing the maths if you are under 28, if you have kids (kids get a free pass when accompanying an adult but still need to pay reservation fees) or if you live a long way from London (as a pass covers you from your home station to London). Passes are available in 1st & 2nd class.

How to use a pass for a trip to Prague

Step 1, buy a 4-days in 1-month Interrail pass from www.raileurope.com (click Rail passes and select Europe ) or www.interrail.eu for €283 adult, €212 youth or €255 senior.  You load the pass into the Railplanner app on your phone.  See pass prices on the Interrail page .

A 4-day pass is enough to get from most places in mainland Britain to Prague & back again.  Although you might need a longer period pass for a journey from Kyle of Lochalsh to Ostrava and back!  You can use your pass on almost all the London-Prague routes shown on this page,

A 4-day pass gives you unlimited train travel on any 4 dates you choose in an overall 1 month period.  The first travel day can be any date you select in the 11 months after buying the pass, the overall 1 month period starts from that date.  Learn about how Interrail passes work here .

Step 2, make a Eurostar passholder reservation from London to Brussels or Paris & back for €30 each way.  See prices & how to make Eurostar passholder reservations online .  Tip:  Eurostar passholder availability is limited, so check availability before buying a pass .

Step 3, make reservations from Brussels or Paris to Prague, if required.

Reservations are usually optional on the ICE trains from Brussels to Berlin and the EuroCity trains from Berlin to Prague, you can hop on any train, sit in any unreserved seat and show your pass, with nothing more to pay.  But reserving seats on the ICE trains is a good idea, this costs around €5 per journey.  Reserve seats at int.bahn.de by using the Book seat only link under the red search button.

On the route between Brussels & Prague via Cheb, reservations are usually optional on the ICE and on Czech domestic parts of a journey, and no reservation is possible on the regional train between Nuremberg & Cheb, you sit where you like and show your pass.

Passholder reservations for the European Sleeper can be made at www.europeansleeper.eu , see prices & how to make reservations .

Couchette or sleeper reservation on the Karlsruhe-Prague sleeper can be made at www.oebb.at following the instructions here, method 1 .  Prices can be found on the Interrail reservations page .  You'll also need reservations from Paris to Karlsruhe, see prices & how to make these here .

Couchette or sleeper reservation on the Brussels-Berlin sleeper can be made at www.oebb.at following the instructions here, method 1 .  Prices can be found on the Interrail reservations page .

For information on reserving passholder places on other trains, see the Interrail reservations page .

Apart from review score and price, I think the three key factors in choosing a hotel are location, location, and, erm, location.  For a longish stay, I'd book a hotel right in the heart of the old town on or near the Old Town Square where the action is.  For a shorter stay, especially if you are leaving on an early train, I'd go for a hotel near the station, so there's no time wasted in taxis, you can walk across the road and leave your bags, and it's an easy stroll across the road to the station when it's time to leave - but that's still easy walking distance to the old town and all the sights.

Hotels near Prague's old town square

Ventana Hotel or Old Town Square Hotel (both 5-star), Grand Hotel Prague , Hotel Rott (both 4-star), Zlatý kůň Golden Horse (3-star).

Hotels near Prague Hlavni station

Personal recommendation:  hotel carlo iv.

The Hotel Carlo IV is a grand 5 star hotel in the classic tradition, in an impressive 19th century building that was originally a bank.  It's an easy 3 minute stroll across the park from the station, an easy walk from all the sights, and being in Prague it isn't as expensive as you'd expect a hotel of this top calibre to be.  Great location, great staff, nice rooms, excellent breakfast, and it even has a spa and swimming pool.

Backpacker hostels

www.hostelworld.com :  If you're on a tight budget, don't forget about backpacker hostels.  Hostelworld offers online booking of cheap private rooms or dorm beds in backpacker hostels in Paris and most other European cities at rock-bottom prices.

Travel insurance & other tips

Always take out travel insurance.

You should take out travel insurance with at least £1m or preferably £5m medical cover from a reliable insurer.  It should cover trip cancellation and loss of cash & belongings up to a reasonable limit.  These days, check you're covered for covid-19-related issues, and use an insurer whose cover isn't invalidated by well-meant but excessive Foreign Office travel advice against non-essential travel. An annual policy is usually cheapest even for just 2 or 3 trips a year, I have an annual policy with Staysure.co.uk myself.  Don't expect travel insurance to bail you out of every missed connection, see the advice on missed connections here .  Here are some suggested insurers, I get a little commission if you buy through these links, feedback always welcome.

Get an eSIM with mobile data package

Don't rely on WiFi, download an eSIM with a European mobile data package and stay connected.  Most newer mobile phones can download a virtual SIM including iPhone 11 & later, see device compatibility list .  There's no need to buy a physical SIM card!  Maya.net is a reliable eSIM data retailer with a 4.5 out of 5 Trustpilot rating and a range of packages including unlimited data .

Get a Curve card for foreign travel

Most banks give you a poor exchange rate then add a foreign transaction fee on top.  A Curve MasterCard means no foreign transaction fees and gives you the mid-market exchange rate, at least up to a certain limit, £500 per month as I write this.  The money you spend on your Curve card goes straight onto one of your existing debit or credit cards.  And you can get a Curve card for free.

How it works:   1. Download the Curve app for iPhone or Android .  2. Enter your details & they'll send you a Curve MasterCard - they send to the UK and most European addresses.  3. Link your existing credit & debit cards to the app, you can link up to two cards with the free version of Curve, I link my normal debit card and my normal credit card.  4. Now use the Curve MasterCard to buy things online or in person or take cash from ATMs, exactly like a normal MasterCard. Curve does the currency conversion and puts the balance in your own currency onto whichever debit or credit card is currently selected in the Curve app.  You can even change your mind about which card it goes onto, within 14 days of the transaction.

I have a Curve Blue card myself, it means I can buy a coffee on a foreign station on a card without being stung by fees and lousy exchange rates, just by tapping the Curve card on their card reader.  The money goes through Curve to my normal debit card and is taken directly from my account (in fact I have the Curve card set up as payment card on Apple Pay on my iPhone, so can double-click my phone, let it do Face ID then tap the reader with the phone - even easier than getting a card out).  I get a little commission if you sign up to Curve, but I recommend it here because I think it's great.  See details, download the app and get a Curve card , they'll give you £5 cashback through that link.

Get a VPN for safe browsing.  Why you need a VPN

When travelling you may use free public WiFi which is often insecure.  A VPN encrypts your connection so it's always secure, even on unsecured WiFi.  It also means you can select the geographic location of the IP address you browse with, to get around geoblocking which a surprising number of websites apply.  See VPNs & why you need one explained .  ExpressVPN is a best buy with a 4.7 out of 5 Trustpilot ranking which I use myself - I've signed up as an ExpressVPN affiliate, and if you go with expressvpn.com using this link you should see a special deal, 3 months free with an annual subscription.  I also get some commission to help support this site.

Carry an Anker powerbank

Tickets, reservations, hotel bookings and Interrail or Eurail passes are often now held on your mobile phone.  You daren't let it run out of power, and you can't always rely on the phone's internal battery or on being near a power outlet.  I always carry an Anker powerbank which can recharge my phone several times over.  Buy from Amazon.co.uk or Buy from Amazon.com .

Touring cities?  Use hill walking shoes!

One of the best things I've done is swap my normal shoes for hill-walking shoes, in my case from Scarpa.  They're intended for hiking across the Pennines not wandering around Florence, but the support and cushioning for hiking works equally well when you're on your feet all day exploring foreign cities.  My feet used to give out first and limit my day, now the rest of me gives up before they do!

Top 5 airlines serving from london to prague.

LOT airlines wasn't the best. They had trouble with boarding and they didn't have my information on file the right way. They change last minute details without us knowing and everything was a HOT MESS. Lot airlines also lost my baggae which was the carseat and haven't responded to any of my emails.

The worst experience ever! They never told me I had to transfer my ticket at the ticket transfer counter. They moved me to a flight leaving the next day, which was also heavily delayed. The staff at the airport were rude and not helpfull. I'll never travel with this airline again and will not recommend it

The customer service and the flight experience were very good!

Horrible trip. Plane was late , so late . the flight conditions were very uncomfortable.

My bag was lost despite an almost 8 hour layover in Warsaw. Nearly 12 hours after my arrival, I have not heard anything about it.

Delay everywhere,5 hours,24 hours,missing all connection flights,terrible trip..

The boarding was delayed several times. The take off was two hours late.

I didn't understand why I couldn't do a check-in at home

The trip itself was good. I have given only good as rating, because my first flight has been cancelled by a different airline and that caused disruption in my trip. I spent over ten hours in Luton airport and that caused me high tiredness, sickness, because of the very early initial trip. easyJet staff has been professional and friendly.

Very pleasant crew, working hard on a full plane. Delay by a broken seat. However crew made back 60% of the delay.

Delayed and then further delayed with no announcement made so that all the passengers (who were standing in the jetty) could hear. We stood there for well over 20 minutes. We were further delayed through weather but no one explained that to us until the pilot made an announcement when finally on board

easyJet need to ensure that whether pre-booking seats or not children aren’t split from their parents the crew spent the majority of boarding asking passengers to move to accommodate two families. Surely the system identifies minors on a booking !!!!! It was all very frustrating to watch and caused delays which I’m sure cost easyJet more in the long run rather that automatically allocating families with minors seats together automatically.

As you would expect from a budget airline Left and arrived on time, no frills, not even a glass of water offered But you get what you pay for

I had an emergency escape seat. The attendant gave the extrA briefing to my side of the aisle but didnt direct it at all to the other where my wife was sitting

Boarding great. Didn’t eat or drink so can not comment.

Total jobs worths over carry on bags, charged £96 extra for bags that were clearly hand luggage

3 hours delayed Don’t understand why when you have paid for ‘speedy boarding’ they call you forward to then make you stand fir another 20 minutes in a confined space before boarding the plane.

The pilot did everything possible to make up the 35 minute delay. His communications were honest, prompt and positive throughout.

Speakers were blaring. It's like being in a Moroccan market and you keep getting shouted at with what's for sale

What can you say Ryanair get you there,no frills Not so cheap anymore ..... but what is now days! Would use again as always. Good flight times for us.

Very unpleasant staff, disgusting service, ignoring requests, refusal to help

Late again rude staff at gate bullying passengers made us stand in the cold 3degrees for 40 mins before they let us board

The usual average Ryanair flight, but we landed 20 min before due time, which was very good.

Enjoyed our flight with Ryanair to Arrecife. Flight boarded pretty much on time, crew were welcoming and very good. Generally good for a frequent low cost flight, Seats could however have been more comfortable.

I wouldn't like to fly with them anymore, I don't like their service, you can hardly take carry-on luggage because they charge you for everything, you can't ask for a glass of water, and the flight attendant tells you that they don't have any, that you have to Paying 3 euros for a bottle of water horrible, I don't recommend it, and they don't have anything low cost, because the plane ticket may not be expensive but what they charge you later for the rest, the flight becomes more expensive, it's the only airline that I don't like it so far, and I traveled a lot.

Staff were friendly and flight was on time. Free drink and snacks would have been appreciated.

The boarding process was fast and easy , but the airport sign was not up on the board, so it was hard to know the correct gate , on the airplane there was NO Snacks and NO water …. Everything needs to be purchase …. It’s not worthy for the price we paid !

Booked through you used Kiwi who did not complete checking in until 24 hrs before departure when the check in was available 48 hrs before hence we sat separately. I will not be using you again.

The flight was on time and the crew very professional. Everything went as expected and I will use BA again for this trip.

We paid to have overhead carry-on baggage. When we got to the gate we were told that our carry on bags would need to be checked and go below because the flight was full. Notably we were nowhere near the last people to board and about 30 other passengers also had to check their carry-on bags. Other than that the flight was fine.

Very bad plain although I paid A business class ticket I was stuck in a stiff fixed seat without any entertainment or Wi Fi for 5 hours I will never ever book a flight on British airline.

Self check in Kiosk did not recognize that I had prepaid for my luggage. This caused a 40 minute delay even though I had my British Airways email receipt for the prepaid luggage.

Crew were very friendly and helpful. They explained to us in detail the delay in our takeoff due to the storm that rolled in from Belfast and did their best to make up the time. Always great to fly BA!

Staff were very helpful. The free WiFi for messages was also very useful to keep in touch

Crew was more interested on looking at their phones than welcoming passengers during boarding.

The crew was very attentive and kept busy serving a variety of treats!

Terrible. Missed my flight to final destination because of delayed British Airways flight. Had to spend 12 hours in airport and $1500 for new plane tickets

The crew on board were all very pleasant and happy to help. The flight had the old business class seats. The departure board in the business lounge did not update and kept on saying ' gate open' but never said boarding. When I got nervous about the departure time and walked to the gate I was told off rudely for being late.

10 Surprising Finds on a Trip to Prague

I first visited Prague in 2004, returned in 2014, and again in 2023 to discover numerous surprising changes since my first visit to the City of a Hundred Spires. In September, there were as many people visiting the City Centre (Old Town) as you would expect in Rome, Paris, or London. Today, the capital of the Czech Republic is very safe (just ask a local) and along with its Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectures, it has morphed into a cosmopolitan destination.

Plan your trip to Prague with our favorite discoveries:

The most beautiful bars we have ever seen are set in the walls of Prague’s riverside embankment.

At night, walk along the riverside to peep inside the Prague embankments to witness little illuminated “dungeons” where you can savor a cocktail, or sit outside at one of these numerous bars that welcome visitors with massive rotating circular glass “doors” along the waterfront. These lens-like hinged round portal windows near the Palacky Bridge are custom-made and imported from Thailand. They are the largest of their type in the world. Some of the spaces also hold cafes, art shows, and private events. The moody sexy portholes offer beer or cocktails for $6 or less. Try the bistro bar – called Lab – for a Mule, Spritz, or Skinny B vodka soda while admiring the cityscape of golden bridges, castles, and palaces.

Medieval towers are the best way to get a bird’s eye view of Prague.

Gain perspective of this magical city by climbing one of Prague’s Gothic monumental buildings. Those energetic enough will want to scale the narrow steps to the observation deck of the Old Town Hall Tower , or for a few extra crowns, ride the glass elevator to the top of the 200-foot tower to witness the ancient heart of the city in all its architectural glory, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Look down (or if you are outside look up) to watch the Grim Reaper ring the bell, the cock crow, and the apostle figures pop out of the famous 15th-century astronomical clock each hour to delight crowds. If you look closely, find 27 crosses in the paving stones representing the 27 people beheaded in this place once upon a time. Inside, visitors can also peruse the chapel, historical halls, and underground areas.

Climbing the Gothic-style 15th-century Powder Gate Tower that marks the entrance to the Royal Route leading to Prague Castle is a must. It is one of the original city gates entered by everyone in the Middle Ages. Consider coming on a weekday at dusk for a more private experience. Scale the 186 narrow spiraling steps to be rewarded with a bird’s eye view 144 feet above Prague Centre. Today, netting holds up the slanted slate roof and some of the exterior facade showcasing stone sculptures of kings, Czech patrons, gargoyles, and saints.

Both charge a small fee. Other towers to consider visiting for sensational views include St. Nicholas Bell Tower, Old Town Bridge Tower, New Mill Water Tower, Clementinum Astronomical Tower, and Baroque Library.

You can stay in a former historic bank used in many films like Bourne Identity - the glamorous, palatial NH Collection Prague Carlo IV.

Located in an authentic Neo-Renaissance palace, the 5-star NH Collection Prague Carlo IV hotel built in the late 1890s was once the bustling Czech Mortgage Bank used to support the development of construction all around the country, then later met its fate during communism as the Prague Post Office or seat of postal censorship. In 2022 the glamorous property went through a major design update respecting the historical appearance.

Situated in the heart of Prague but away from the main tourist hub and just a 10-minute walk from the Old Town Square, a stay in this stunning elegant building with 152 rooms will not be forgotten. One step inside and your mouth will surely be agape at every turn. The lobby stuns with its soaring light-filtered ceiling and former wooden bank teller windows as the guts of the bank are now the 1890 Restaurant.

Marvel at the restored original ceilings with paintings where ornate crystal chandeliers hang and a coat of arms represents the city branches the bank opened. The chic 1890 foyer bar is where you should spend an evening relaxing after a day of sightseeing with a cocktail in hand. A pianist sets the mood and a cocktail menu comes with options named after the many movies filmed here. Just off the lobby find the secret wooden-clad Vault Bar located in the original bank treasury where currently an exhibition details the former bank's history.

High-ceilinged spacious suites impress with classic Italian furniture and massive vertical windows allow light to filter into these impressive rooms with walk-in closets, vintage dressers, couches, and oversized marble bathrooms. Guests can stay in the historical section or the modern wing added in 2003. Just stepping outside our room into the original corridors with an elaborate staircase made me feel like a princess. Penthouses here have been used by celebs, fashion designers, and heads of state.

Each morning guests can expect an over-the-top breakfast spread (where you can also order a la carte) with a dizzying array of fresh options (i.e. hot dishes, cold cuts, cheeses, yogurts, fruit, pastries, bread, eggs, freshly squeezed juices, smoothies, DIY Mimosa and Bloody Mary possibilities) all enhanced with a calming harpist who we heard also performs at the National Theatre.

For those who need a reboot while traveling, the hotel houses an expansive spa in the subterranean vault with a 20-meter-long heated swimming pool with whirlpool, massage beds, steam room, dry sauna, and fitness studio. Ask for Denisa for an unforgettable relaxing massage with linden aromatherapy and masterful techniques like rubbing your hand and foot at the same time. Staying here will enhance your Prague memories.

Prague has over 25 restaurants in the Michelin Guide.

For those who want to try a fine dining experience when visiting a new country, Prague may be the best place – due to cost and a slew of options for various budgets. One of the richest meals we tried was near the Jewish Quarter at Field , a one-star Michelin restaurant offering various tasting menus mixing Czech classic dishes with modern elements including artful presentations of foie gras, duck liver, veal, and sweetbread stuffed with Mangalica pork topped with truffle. Many amuse-bouche appetizers began this affair in a Scandinavian-esque room with farm tools hanging from the walls and windows. Seasonality leads the way with a guarantee of surprising combinations like a dish of tomato, marinated strawberry, basil granita, yogurt, and basil powder prepared tableside while many courses arrive with a symphony of waiters finishing the dish finales in front of you. We suggest a wine pairing to help compliment the decadent haute cuisine.

La Degustation is another one-star Michelin restaurant to try in Prague with a set menu. Eska and Eatery come highly recommended too - both in the same neighborhood. Some of our favorite Czech-inspired dishes came from the 1890 Restaurant and Bar , a sophisticated newcomer located within the historic grand NH Collection Prague Carlo IV. We won’t be surprised if the restaurant joins the Michelin Guide, as guests can find traditional recipes prepared in elevated ways like pumpkin ginger soup, beef cheeks with cream sauce, wild cranberries, and fine chive potato dumplings, and homemade buns for dessert with vanilla sauce and dark rum.

The best place to listen to classical music is on the street and in churches.

Musical talent has long flourished in the Czech capital where in the 17 th and 18 th centuries it was known as the conservatory of Europe. “Whoever is Czech, is a musician,” may be a local proverb. Walk around the city and there is no shortage of street musicians setting the mood by playing mesmerizing classical tunes, jazz, or pop around Charles Bridge or Old Town Square. Churches are some of the best places to listen to classical music due to the acoustics. For around $20, duck into the glorious St. Francis of Assisi Church with its magnificent dome located by the Charles Bridge. Here, admire a unique baroque organ from 1702 where most evenings at 7 PM, you don’t need a reservation to experience an hour of moving Mozart, Dvorak, Bach, Schubert, Vivaldi, Handel, and Czech Baroque music. Even Mozart played this organ. Learn more at www.organconcerts.cz . The highly acclaimed Royal Czech Orchestra can also be found playing at St. Salvador Church, the main early Baroque-style church of Clementinum, and the city landmark entrance to the Old Town.

Beer is still inexpensive and some of the best in the world.

Czech beer has a long history, with brewing beginning in Brevnov Monastery in the year 993. Beer is so fresh here because it's not pasteurized. We often paid around $3 or less for a pint with a big head of foam. Make your own brew tour by resting your legs and flexing your beer muscles in a historical brewery such as 12th century Strahov Monastery courtyard (for light and dark lager), U Fleku (for dark home-brewed beer at the oldest and most famous beer hall), or Staropramen . Try blueberry beer in a cave at Restaurant Na Pekle now with an outdoor garden deck or sip beers with the locals at the Letna Beer Garden park high above the city. Prague Beer Museum has over 30 beers on tap. We also loved sitting at Mlyny in Kampa Park on the river. Great beer can be found anywhere - at every restaurant, bar, and pub. Or soak it all in at the Chodovar Beer Spa . For 17 days in May, Prague hosts the Czech Beer Festival annually where more than 70 brands of Czech beer can be tasted.

Traditional Czech cuisine is very rich and hearty.

Don’t expect to find many salads on the menu as local Czech cuisine consists of pork knuckle, duck leg, beef carpaccio, duck liver, sausage, pork, beef, schnitzel, goulash, and potato dumplings. Around the city, the smell of chimney cakes wafts in the air as this doughy goodness is wrapped around hot iron rods and is now served stuffed with ice cream and toppings.

Lavka makes a nice spot by the river in view of Charles Bridge to sip beer and share a succulent roasted pork knuckle as they are big enough for two and often accompanied with bread, pickled onion, mustard, and horseradish. Right on the riverbank of Vltava, duck into local rustic Czech cuisine favorite U Kalendu , a restaurant bakery serving big juicy tender confit duck leg, homemade dried sausages, and interesting dishes like chewy pig ears and toasted bread with duck hearts and stomach. For a fresh veggie fix, share their grilled little gem salad and baked leeks with egg.

Surprisingly, we did see a few plant-based restaurants like Vegan Restaurant near the castle with sensational cityscape views where if you are lucky you can score a seat atop their tiny terrace. Locals told us we must try Vietnamese food since a large Vietnamese population has resided here since the Communist era.

An immersive Banksy exhibition can be experienced in a Baroque-style church.

Just like Banksy’s art appears in unusual places all over the world, now in the heart of Prague, the World of Banksy has arrived in a stunning church where a famous Czech priest and church reformer “Jan Hus” used to preach in the 15th century. The church and adjacent monastery were later disestablished during the reforms of Emperor Joseph II in the 18 th century. However, in recent years the building served as a warehouse and a nightclub, and now, after centuries, the building hosts another reformer – Banksy!

Here you can peruse the illusive artist’s murals, canvases, graffiti, installations, video installations, projections of his artwork, and unique pieces from private collectors – all reproduced and compiled for this show. The best part is the exhibition gets you thinking especially about morality with themes of corruption, prejudice, greed, environmental issues, societal flaws, and more – with more than 115 artworks presented in their original size.

Funky modern architecture can also be found in this fairytale landscape.

You don’t need to be an expert to appreciate the diversity of Prague’s architecture - although just walking around is like stepping into a 3D architecture textbook of unparalleled design with Romanesque chapels and cellars, Baroque palaces and gardens, worldly Art Nouveau buildings, unique Cubist architecture, and over thirty bridges and footbridges spanning the picturesque Vltava River. It’s easy to be in awe at every turn - from the Municipal House to the Wallenstein Palace to the Church of Our Lady before Tyn - but now dramatic new buildings have popped up in the last few decades like the mod National Library of Technology and the controversial modernist Dancing House building also known as Ginger and Fred designed by a Croatian Czech architect Vlado Milunic with Canadian American architect Frank Gehry. It is deemed out of place, disrupting the landscape of ancient buildings for which Prague is famous. Others to seek out include Mainpoint Prague, AFI Karlin Butterfly, The New Stage of the National Theatre, The Stvanice Footbridge (designed as a “sculpture in the city”), and the reversible Manifesto Market built with reclaimed materials.

You can become spellbound in Prague.

It's nothing short of wondrous just walking around admiring this “Golden City,” with its high-top castle perched above the river with its St. Vitus Cathedral masterpiece - where at the right time, heavenly colors explode and glow inside due to the stained-glass windows. Visiting the landmark medieval Charles Bridge may leave you spellbound early in the morning before crowds or at night when the glowing deep blue sky contrasts with the 36 Baroque guardian statues. Get your breath taken away at every turn - in the oldest Jewish cemetery in the world, as the State Opera House is aglow in the evening, or as the midday sunlight illuminates the pastel-hued decorative buildings in Old Town Square. Your pocketbook will become spellbound too as prices for food, drink, and lodging are significantly more affordable than most major cities in Europe and the US.

Prague is full of surprises.
