Traveling to Mexico in December: A Local’s Guide for 2024

Traveling to Mexico in December is a great time of year to plan your trip. This is the start of the “high season” for popular destinations along Mexico’s Caribbean and Pacific coasts, and the temperature in these areas is hot, sunny, and perfect for swimming and enjoying the beaches, without being unbearably humid. 

In more central regions of Mexico, things are getting a little cooler, particularly in higher-altitude places like Mexico City, Guadalajara, San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas, and Guanajuato. As everyone in Mexico starts preparing for the Christmas season and decorations and twinkling lights start to grace every city street and plaza, there is something magical about traveling at this time of year too. 

I have been living in Merida, in the Yucatan for the last two years and I am preparing to spend my third December in Mexico. You are in good hands here 😉

Traveling to Mexico in December 

December in Mexico is a great time of year to travel, whether you are looking for a tropical beach getaway or a cultured weekend city break. However, is important to acknowledge that Mexico is a vast country and that the exact temperatures and climate conditions can vary substantially from one area to another. 

So, it is impossible to give a sweeping generalization about what you should pack and how hot/cold it is going to be. In places like Queretaro and Guanajuato, it will be so cold that you can see your own breath and you will need to wear a thick coat in the evenings. 

In the Yucatan peninsula and the southern part of Jalisco (Puerto Vallarta and its surroundings), it is still going to be around 86°F/30°C. 

The weather in Mexico in December is generally dry and warm across the country. Conditions are somewhat cooler than in November and the rainy season has finally subsided.

However, it is very important to note that Mexico is vast. This is the 13th largest country in the world after all!

Exact temperatures and climate conditions vary drastically from one part of the country to another. The coastal destinations and most of Southern Mexico see very hot, balmy conditions.

Conversely, places like San Cristobal in Chiapas, San Miguel de Allende, and Mexico City are all set at higher altitudes and thus see cooler temperatures. It is important to check the specific temperatures for the part of Mexico that you are traveling to in advance of your trip so that you can pack accordingly.

Pros and cons of visiting Mexico in December 

There are pros and cons of traveling to Mexico at any time of year, including in December. The high season in many coastal parts of the country typically runs from November to March each year, during which time thousands of “snowbirds” from the US, Canada, and elsewhere flock south of the border to enjoy their winters in warmer climes in Mexico. 

This means that popular places like Merida, Playa Del Carmen, Cancun, Los Cabos, and Puerto Vallarta are at their most crowded, accommodation needs to be booked in advance, and prices soar across the board. If you need to adhere to a tight budget, it is better to travel to these places in the shoulder or off seasons when you can get more bang for your buck. 

Conversely, more “off the beaten path” destinations like Guanajuato, Hidalgo, and Queretaro are at their quietest. 

The hurricane season affects coastal Mexico between June and November every year, and fortunately, by December, the rain has subsided and things are clearing up. This also makes everywhere a lot less humid which makes it more bearable to explore ruins, hike, or do other outdoor activities.

Honestly, Mexico is a great year-round travel destination so you will not be disappointed wherever you choose to travel. 

Some of the very best places to travel during this time of year are:

Widely regarded as being one of the “most beautiful railways in the world”, the El Chepe train route is a wonderful Mexican adventure to embark on in December. The train runs through Northern Mexico’s Copper Canyon from Los Mochis, Sinaloa to Chihuahua, stopping at charming villages such as El Fuerte and Creel. 

The scenery is breathtaking at any time of year, but in the winter, it is extra special as the hills and mountains in the area are sprinkled with a light dusting of snow. 

You can buy different class tickets on this old-fashioned train and there is a viewing and a bar cart on board with floor to ceiling windows where you can really admire the view and take some great photos. While Chihuahua and Sinaloa are not necessarily known for their safety , the villages and hiking trails in the immediate vicinity of the stations are perfectly fine. 

Los Mochis is no great beauty but it is well deserved of a few days exploration at the start of your trip. It is home to an excellent street food and foodie culture and from here you can take a day trip out to the seaside town of El Maviri and neighboring Topolobampo where you can learn about the famous resident dolphin known as “El Pechocho”. 

Merida, Mexico in December

The colorful colonial city of Merida is the cultural capital of the Yucatan state. Merida is the safest city in Mexico and it makes a nice introduction to the country if you are apprehensive about visiting Mexico for the first time.

Many incredible Mayan ruins can be visited on day trips from Merida – including the underrated city of Mayapan , the archeological sites of Uxmal, Xcambo, the Ruta Puuc and of course, Chichen Itza, one of the “new” seven wonders of the world.

The city center itself is a photographer’s dream. Once upon a time, during the henequen boom, Merida was one of the richest cities in the world.

This is evidenced in its grand, colonial mansions that still line the cobbled streets and promenades. Calle 59 and the Avenida Del Deportista are particularly scenic. Many of these old buildings have been converted into eclectic coffee shops, sophisticated Merida restaurants , and guesthouses.

Merida is located inland, not on the coast. However, a short 20-minute journey by bus or car takes you to the little beach town of Progreso .

3-4 days is a perfect amount of time for an initial Merida itinerary . You can also visit the city as part of a wider Yucatan road trip . Just like Merida, the Yucatan state is also very safe.

Weather in Merida in December

Nestled in the heart of the Yucatan, encompassed by jungle and ancient Mayan ruins, Merida is also one of the hottest places in the country. The heat and humidity can be almost overbearing here during the summer months but in December, the daily temperature tends to bounce around 82°F to 85°F.

It is hot enough to give you your dose of summer sun and help you escape the winter blues you are feeling in your own country, but it is not too hot that spending long periods outdoors feels unbearable.

Campeche in December

The state of Campeche is the least-visited state in the Yucatan tri-state area. In some ways, this is a shame as the state is bursting at the seams with cultural and historical sites and attractions.

Coastal Campeche city is the state capital and it’s a beautiful one at that. Despite the fact that few people have heard of Campeche internationally, its colonial old town is a UNESCO-protected heritage site.

Its narrow streets, piazzas, and passageways have been so well preserved that venturing here feels like traveling back in time. The city thrived during the 17th century, at which point its strategic location right on the Gulf of Mexico made it an important trading port. Campeche mostly dealt with the trade of dyewood and salt. However, with great economic success came the threat of pirates and attacks.

Several fortresses, fortifications, and bastions still exist in Campeche today. The two defensive fortresses have been converted into museums containing interesting exhibits and boasting incredible panoramas over the Southern Mexican state.

Some of the least visited Mayan ruins can be found in Campeche, including the city of Edzna , remote Calakmul, and Becan. If you like Mexican gastronomy and Yucatecan cuisine , you can also stop by the town of Hecelchakán which is where the beloved dish “cochinita pibil” originates from. (There are also many excellent restaurants in Campeche city that specialise in regional cuisine).

You can expect daily averages of around 83°F if you head to Campeche in December. While it doesn’t frequently rain, it can be cloudy or overcast around 30% of the time.

Mexico City in December

Mexico City is the capital of Mexico and the largest city in North America. It is bursting at the seams with museums, charming barrios , archeological sites and a mouthwatering gastronomy scene that is considered one of the best in the world.

Even dedicating 3-4 days to your first visit is only really enough time to scratch beneath the surface. December is a particularly interesting time to visit because of all of the festive celebrations.

On the 12th December, pilgrims from across Mexico travel to the Basilica de Guadalupe in Mexico City to celebrate the Dia de Guadalupe . Parades and processions take place across the city and fireworks illuminate the night sky.

At midnight, locals take to the streets of CDMX to sing Las Mañanitas , the Mexican birthday song, to the virgen. The annual “Christmas Festival” takes place between the 16th and the 30th December, and sees nightly performances and live music hosted at the Plaza de la Constitución.

Christmas in CDMX is a magical time, but of course, there are also many things to do here which can be enjoyed all year round too. Dedicate time to exploring Mexico Citys various neighborhoods, each of which are like little villages in themselves, and each have their own personality.

Dine at world-class restaurants in upscale Polanco, visit Frida Kahlo’s house in leafy Coyoacan , and fall in love with the street art and hipster vibes of Roma Norte.

When choosing where to stay in Mexico City , opt for a relatively central location where you will have everything you need on your doorstep. Polanco , Roma, Anzures, and the historic center are good choices.

Weather in Mexico City in December

Mexico City can actually get quite chilly during the winter months and you can expect daytime averages between 65°F and 71°F in December. While that may be milder than what you are used to, it definitely isnt shorts and tshirt weather so if you are visiting various parts of Mexico in the winter, you need to pack for different climates.

Cancun in December

As one of the most popular travel destinations in the country, Cancun needs no introduction. The Quintana Roo capital is home to a glittering hotel zone filled with ultra-luxurious resorts, world-famous nightclubs and award-winning restaurants.

While Cancun boasts excellent beaches of its own, it also makes a great base for a wider exploration of the Yucatan, gorgeous Riviera Maya beaches and Mayan ruins such as Chacchoben and Coba.

If you are planning on visiting Cancun in December, it is absolutely imperative that you book everything as far in advance as possible. Since this is the peak season, many hotels and hostels are at maximum occupancy at this time.

To escape some of the crowds, consider taking day trips out to calmer, lesser-known destinations in the Mexican Carribean such as the picturesque fishing village of Mahahual , Lake Bacalar and El Cuyo .

December in Cancun weather

December marks the beginning of the dry season in Cancun. The rain and humidity of the hurricane season have subsided, the days are hot and sunny and the nights are warm and pleasant.

Daily temperatures range between 82°F and 85°F and the water visibility at Cancun’s gorgeous beaches is perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

Chiapas in December

December is a great time to visit the Southern Mexican state of Chiapas . This part of the country is massively underrated and overlooked. Yet, it is one of the best places to travel to if you enjoy hiking, nature and learning about indigenous cultures.

Much of Chiapas state is autonomous, and many of the people that reside in the various towns and villages here belong to the Tzotzil and Zoque indigenous groups.

The gorgeous mountain city of San Cristobal de las Casas is the entire raison dêtre for most people’s visit to Chiapas and is known for its spectacular colonial architecture, artisanal markets and handicrafts.

From here, you can take a trip out to the indigenous villages of Zinacantan and Chamula where you can visit the interesting “San Juan Chamula” church where people visit curanderos (witch doctors) to seek healing from their ailments and illnesses.

Weather in Chiapas in December

The weather conditions in Chiapas vary depending on where you are in the state. San Cristobal de las Casas is nestled within the Sierra Madre mountains where it sits at a high altitude.

In the day time, you can expect averages of between 55°F – 65°F and at night, it is often so chilly that you need to utilise thick blankets and a heater.

By contrast, the capital of Tuxtla Gutierrez, along with the Pueblos Magicos of Chiapa de Corzo and Comitan de Dominguez , are located at ground level and see warmer climates that are more comparable to the Yucatan.

(Think average daily temperatures between 74°F and 82°F).

Snorkeling in Cozumel island in December 

Cozumel is a stunning tropical island paradise that awaits just off the coast of Cancun. Boasting lucious tropical beaches and crystal-clear aquamarine waters, Cozumel is perhaps best known for its diving and snorkelling opportunities. 

The island is part of the Mesoamerican barrier reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world after Australia’s Great Barrier reef and a great place to see colourful fish like angel fish, parrotfish and grouper, as well as larger creatures like turtles, rays and dolphins. 

There are tons of great beaches on this island that, while still somewhat busy in December, see a fraction of the amount of tourists seen in Cancun. Head to Isla de la Passion if you are seeking seclusion, peace and tranquility, Punta Sur Eco beach park for a stunning coastal area surrounded by hiking trails and nature, and Playa Palancar if you want a beach with a ton of restaurants and amenities a stone’s throw away. 

Cabo San Lucas in December

Visiting Cabo San Lucas in December is a great choice, particularly if you are interested in whale-watching and laidback beach vibes.

Every year between December and April, thousands of whales (mostly humpbacks and grey whales) flock to the warm waters of Baja California to mate. Countless tour companies throughout Los Cabos offer whale-watching tours and most of the time, you are guaranteed to see at least a couple of whales swimming alongside your boat.

Dolphin sightings are also very common and add to the experience. Although the likelihood of seeing whales is likely slightly greater in January and February, many tour companies offer refunds (or a repeat trip, as you prefer) if you are not fortunate enough to see whales on one particular boat ride.

Los Cabos in December sees mild temperatures and daily averages of around 68°F. Water temperatures tend to be around 72°F-75°F so conditions are warm enough for swimming, even if this is not the hottest part of Mexico.

Puerto Vallarta in December

Set on Mexico’s Pacific Coast in the west-central state of Jalisco, the beachtown of Puerto Vallarta is one of the popular travel destinations in the country. December is the high season here, so reserving everything advance if you plan to travel at this time of the year is highly recommended. 

While Jalisco’s beaches may not have the same translucent aquamarine waters as the Mexican Carribean, they are naturally beautiful, encompassed by unique rock formations or tucked away in hidden coves. Most locals and tourists tend to stick to city beaches like Playa Camarones and Playa de los Muertos which are busy but fun.

Here you have great views of the Bahia de Banderas, and street vendors wander up and down the sandy coast selling everything from chiccharon (fried pork skins) to shrimp, tequila cocktails and Mexican candies known as “meringue”. 

For something more secluded, head to the pebbled beach of Conchas Chinas, the “Beverly Hills” of Puerto Vallarta, or the upscale coastal areas of Mismaloya and Playa las Gemelas. Though they require a little more effort to reach, you can also pay a few pesos to take a small fishing boat out to the beaches of Yelapa and Colomitos which are seldom crowded and feels as though you have a tropical island paradise all to yourself. 

If you fancy a change of pace, you can rent a car in Vallarta and take a day trip to the pueblo magicos of San Sebastian del Oeste or Mascota. San Sebastian del Oeste is particularly charming. 

This little village in the Sierra Madre mountains was once one of the most important mining towns in Mexico and is characterised by its white stone houses with red tiled gable roofs and terracotta fixtures.

Puerto Vallarta in December weather

December daytime temperatures in Puerto Valla range between 77°F and 85°F, offering the perfect conditions for enjoying the beaches and exploring the islands off Mexico’s west coast.

Guadalajara in December

The Jalisco capital of Guadalajara is Mexicos second city and arguably one of the most underrated destinations in the country. This part of Jalisco state is credited as being the birthplace of numerous Mexican traditions including mariachi, tequila and the charreria (Mexican rodeo).

Some of the most impressive architecture and attractions can be found close to the Guadalajara cathedral and the Zocalo central square. The citys San Juan de Dios market is the largest covered market in Latin America, while Mercado Corona is a great place to indulge in regional delicacies like torta ahogadas (“drowned” sandwiches), and sheep birria. 

In nearby Tlaquepaque , you can experience live mariachi at El Parian square, where some of the very first mariachi performed over 100 years ago. From Guadalajara, you can also take day trips out to Tequila, the birthplace of its namesake beverage, and Lake Chapala, the largest freshwater lake in Mexico. 

Weather in Guadalajara in December

Like Mexico City, Guadalajara is at a higher altitude than coastal regions of Mexico and sees cooler temperatures in December. (Albeit likely still milder than what you may be accustomed to at home).

Expect average daytime temperatures of 61℉, highs of 75℉, and lows of 50℉.

Oaxaca in December

Oaxaca has become an increasingly popular Mexico travel destination in recent years and is widely regarded as being the “foodie capital” of Mexico. In both 2022 AND 2023, Travel and Leisure magazine recognized Oaxaca City as being the best city in the world. That is quite an achievement!

December is a particularly wonderful time to travel to Oaxaca because of all of the Mexican Christmas festivities that are taking place at this time. The Noche de Rábanos (night of the radishes) celebration that takes place at the Plaza de la Constitución on December 23rd is not to be missed.

This obscure tradition dates back to 1897 and sees people carve various items out of radishes and enter competitions to see who has the best design. On Christmas Eve, nativity processions known as calendas take place in Oaxaca City and see floats and parades of people dressed as angels or various figures make their way through the city and to the churches.

Of course, there are many Oaxaca attractions that are wonderful to enjoy all year round. Be sure to organize a tour of one of the mezcal plantations in the region and sample regional foodie specialites like tlayuda, memela, and caldo de piedra (stone soup).

December is a warm, sunny and dry month in Oaxaca and you can expect average daily temperatures between 78°F and 82°F.

This is warm enough to enjoy the beaches of Puerto Escondido and coastal Oaxaca, but not so overbearingly hot that walking around the city is by any means unpleasant.

Across the world, December marks the start of the festive Christmas period and Mexico is no different. From the beginning of the month, you will start to see many towns, cities, and Pueblo Magicos decorate their zocalos (central squares) with Christmas lights and decorations. 

Huge nativity scenes are set up everywhere from Cancun to Monterrey, and local stores and restaurants start decorating their interiors with garlands and bold signs that read “Feliz Navidad!”. Some of the key dates to know in December in Mexico are detailed below.

Dia de Guadalupe (12th December)

While Christmas decorations may start creeping up earlier, the festive season in Mexico officially starts on the 12th of December. This is the Día de Guadalupe, one of Mexico’s most important religious holidays. 

The day commemorates the anniversary of the 12th December 1531 when the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared in front of an indigenous peasant named Juan Diego. Across the country, many devout Catholics participate in a candlelit procession to their local churches.

Posadas Navideñas and processions

In the days that follow the Dia de Guadalupe, more and more decorations pop up around towns and cities, and colorful, sparkling piñatas are hung from store fronts and doorways. Many processions are held throughout the town including Posadas Navideña – processions that reenact Mary and Joseph’s search for an inn. There is also the more commercialized desfile Coca-Cola which is a parade sponsored by the softs drinks brand that is hosted on different dates around the country and sees illuminated floats and people dressed like Coca Cola bottles take to the streets.

Christmas Eve in Mexico

In Mexico, Christmas Eve (Noche Buena) is arguably more important than Christmas Day and people tend to enjoy their Christmas dinner and exchange gifts on this day.

Many churches across Mexico host mass (Misa de Gallo) which foreigners can attend as long as they are respectful. Traditional Christmas foods in Mexico differ to what you may be accustomed to in the west.

A popular delicacy is the Christmas Eve salad (Ensalada de Noche Buena) which is a sweet, unique, fruity salad that is prepared with beetroots, hibiscus flowers, guava fruit, apples, oranges, limes, and other fruits and flavorings.

Every Mexican family likely has a different Ensalada de Noche Buena recipe that has been passed down through the generations. Bacalao (salted codfish) and wrapped cornmeal dumplings (tamales) are also popular things to eat.

Bunuelos (fried pastries sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon) are popular desserts that you will find sold in most bakeries and panaderias.

Christmas Day in Mexico

Christmas Day in Mexico is a national public holiday and most businesses will be closed. You will find restaurants in many major cities offer Mexican or western Christmas dinner menus but advanced reservations are a must.

There are no major events or parades on this day as in Mexico, it is a day to be spent with family.

New Year’s Eve in Mexico

New Year’s Eve (Nochevieja or Año Nuevo) is a big celebration in Mexico. Many celebrations, processions, traditional markets, and fireworks displays are hosted in central squares (zocalos) across the country.

A large portion of the evening is often spent having dinner with family. There are also many parties hosted at bars and clubs across the country where people head to see in the New Year.

People are usually drinking and sipping champagne as the clock strikes twelve, after which they greet each other with a “Feliz Año Nuevo!” There is also a whole range of Mexican superstitions that revolve around the holiday too.

For instance, it is supposed to be good luck to eat twelve grapes as the clock strikes twelve. Similarly, if you run through your neighborhood with an empty suitcase on New Year’s Day, it is said to mean that you will enjoy many travels in the near future.

You’ll also find that Cancun is subject to tropical rains and hurricane threats in the summer months, making a low-season visit riskier. While you’re likely to find deep discounts on hotels and flights at this time of year, your trip might get washed out. Summer also generally corresponds to the massive seaweed blooms that have plagued the Caribbean region for years now.

December in Cancun is, essentially, perfect. The storms of the summer and fall months have cleared out, meaning you’re far more likely to experience sunny skies. This region to the north of Puerto Vallarta — a long-time vacation hub for sun-seekers and gay travelers — is home to a wide range of hotel styles, from quaint boutique properties to big all-inclusive resorts. Riviera Nayarit consists of a string of towns that include the posh gated community of Punta Mita as well as the boho, artsy towns of Sayulita and San Pancho. Puerto Vallarta is where to go for a good time. Compared to June through October — when hotel rates are often at their lowest — rain is essentially unheard of in December. That makes your prospects of coming home tan and happy all the more likely.

December also marks the start of whale-watching season in Puerto Vallarta, which is another contributor to higher rates in the peak season. Whales are often visible right from shore, though you can also book whale watches from the marina as well.

For nine days stretching from December 16th to the 24th, the Mexican Posadas take place. Singing processions travel the streets with candles, reenacting St. Joseph and the Virgin Mary’s trek through Bethlehem in search of shelter. Residents in nearby homes play the roles of innkeepers who refused to help the travelers until Joseph and Mary are received at a designated area. In many places, the procession is beautifully detailed with angels, pilgrims, shepherds and children carrying poinsettias. The entire scene is performed in song and at the final location the participants share prayers of thanks before enjoying a marvelous feast.

Throughout the month, visitors are sure to see Nativity scenes decorating homes, churches and several public venues. Scenes of Jesus’ birth in a manger are carefully laid out with ceramic figures often representing the Biblical characters. Along the streets of Mexico, these scenes range from simple setups to elaborate designs with breathtaking detail. As December 24th arrives, families gather for a nourishing meal on Christmas Eve, honoring the Nativity scene with prayer and gratitude.

This will mean that in December, southern regions like Yucatan and southern Baja California will be pleasant and warm, while the interior climate in places like Chihuahua and Mexico City will experience a milder daytime climate with chilly nights. 

It is worth noting that the Pacific Coast in Mexico is one of the best places to visit during the Christmas season as the weather is one of the warmest in December and there will be no rain at all with the sun beaming on you as you catch the waved or just sit by the beach !

Mexico is a very conservative Roman Catholic country. If this means anything, it definitely means that Mexicans go big on Christmas. The Christmas season typically starts from December 12 to early January. The first thing that will pop up in any Mexican city will be the street markets that will be dedicated to selling gifts and decorations to adorn the streets. They will also be selling traditional Christmas plants, as well as small to huge Nativity scenes. These markets actually tend to start popping up around mid-November. As early as December begins, residential buildings and main streets become completely overrun by beautiful Christmas lights and other decorations, with contests of the grandest display occurring perfect for your viewing pleasure. You will find that many Mexican cities will host a lot of the similar activities that you may have in your home country. For instance, in Mexico City, the main plaza will have towering Christmas trees and an ice rink. On December 12, you can walk around any city in Mexico and find the streets lined with different variations of the Nativity scene created by the residents and marvel at the creativity. There are many feast days where people will go to church and soon after congregate at the many restaurants or in their homes for a delicious feast. You can take advantage of the Christmas fare by exploring the culinary culture on these feast days. From mid-December until Christmas-eve is when the main events occur. There is a series of parties and celebrations called Las Posadas, which there are pinatas and food and lively music! After Christmas, on December 28, is the Day of the Innocents, which is Mexico’s answer to April Fool’s Day! This is a day where people will play pranks on each other, but also give out refreshments and sweets to passersby on the streets. If you want to experience a unique and beautiful facet of Mexican culture, then Christmastime is the time for you and your family!

At the beginning of the second week of December, the Tropico Music Festival descends upon the city for a great three day beachfront extravaganza. This festival takes place in the Hotel Pierre Mundo Imperial and is jampacked with music and dancing, fashions shows, art exhibitions and forums for artists. So put on your dancing shoes and make your way to beautiful Acapulco!

It goes without saying that Mexico City is worth visiting. An impressively massive capital city, Mexico City is teeming with activity. The colonial historic centre has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, as did the floating gardens of Xochimilco. If you are a lover of the arts, then you have to visit the Palacio de Bellas Artes, where you will be able to get a feeling of why Mexico City was the richest viceroyalty in the Spanish Empire. Beautiful expressions of art adorn the inside and the exterior of the building with beautiful pieces and a lovely timeline of Mexico City’s rich history of artistic trends through the passing eras. You can visit the famous Frida Kahlo museum and find out about the private universe of Latin America’s most celebrated artistic figure. Have a taste of contemporary Mexican cuisine that is prepared by the many migrants who moved to the capital from all over Mexico! The street food culture here is amazing, and you can taste the fusion of all parts of the country with their gorditas, tacos and pozole. Take a gander at the Plaza de La Constitucion with the main plaza and the Spanish Colonial buildings. Explore the ancient Aztec temple in what was once the Aztec metropolis of Tenochtitlan, and a walk down the Paseo de la Reforma, an avenue built after the Champs-Elysees. Walking through the city, you will see how well preserved the Baroque-style facades of the colonial buildings are, which is partly what granted the city its UNESCO world heritage status! The aligned streets of the city makes it accessible to take a walking tour around the historical centre to get a full view on remarkably well preserved this city has been kept! You can still see the old city walls that once separated the colonists from the indigenous, and you can learn about the cultures of both by visiting the old Mayan ruins nearby. Visit the Mayan necropolis of Jaina with more than a thousand human burials can be viewed. Campeche has seen a wide variety of eras in its time, and it really reflects just by taking a trip to this lively city!

Chapultepec Park is a sprawling urban park located in the center of Mexico City, spanning more than a whipping 1,600 acres (which makes it four times the size of Central Park!). 

The park boasts a diverse range of attractions, such as museums, gardens, and the only authentic European castle on the American continent.

4. Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe

The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of the most famous religious sites in Mexico and a significant pilgrimage spot for millions of Catholics annually.

The compound comprises numerous structures, including the Old Basilica and the New Basilica, where the celebrated image of the Virgin Mary is located.

5. Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral

The Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral is one of the most important landmarks in Mexico City and one of the most famous religious and historical buildings in the Americas.

Even if you’re not religious, the site is an absolute work of art and a great example of baroque architecture in Mexico. 

6. National Museum of Anthropology

7. Palacio de Bellas Artes

The Palacio de Bellas Artes is an exquisite Art Deco structure located in the center of Mexico City, serving as both a theater and art museum.

Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe, or the Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, is a religious holiday in Mexico that commemorates the appearance of the Virgin Mary to Juan Diego, an indigenous Mexican, in 1531. 

According to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac and asked him to build a church in her honor.

She left behind an image of herself on his cloak, which is now enshrined in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

🎊 Día de los Inocentes (December 18th)

Día de los Inocentes means “Innocents Day” and it’s pretty much the same as April Fools in the United States.

On this date, you can prank just about everyone but here’s the catch: if you lend money to Día de los Inocentes, don’t expect to get it back! 

🎊 Christmas Eve (December 24th)

Christmas Eve is when Mexicans officially celebrate Christmas.

You’ll find this day is super hectic with people doing last-minute shopping all over. In the evenings, you’ll feel peace and calm as families gather to have dinner together and share gifts.

🎊 Christmas Day (December 25th)

Christmas Day is usually super calm in Mexico City.

Most businesses close on this day and everyone stays home to spend time with family.

If you walk around Mexico City on this day, don’t be surprised if you don’t run into a single person on the streets!

Whether you're seeking a warm-weather hideaway or want to experience the holiday spirit in a snow-covered town, you'll find it in these destinations. London is abuzz with holiday-themed activities in December. Holiday pop-ups transform attractions like Hyde Park and the London Zoo, while Christmas ballets and concerts take over the city's legendary entertainment scene. What's more, "Harry Potter" fans can opt for a festive tour during the Hogwarts in the Snow event at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London. Chilly temperatures in the 40s and rainy conditions mean it's the perfect time to don your coziest jumper. Plus, London's rainy day standbys like the Tower of London and the British Museum are typically less crowded at this time of year.

If you're seeking palm-fringed festivities without the need for a passport, look no further than the U.S. Virgin Islands. December is the start of the dry season in this Caribbean island chain, and average temperatures in the 70s and 80s are perfect for lounging on beautiful white sand beaches like Magens Bay or snorkeling in Virgin Islands National Park. Plus, you'll get a taste of the islands' vibrant culture during the Crucian Christmas Festival, which takes place on St. Croix at the end of the month. Partake in the merriment with parades, music competitions and more.

Snow-capped mountains, quaint villages and mouthwatering cuisine (much of which involves some form of melted cheese) make the French Alps a classic winter getaway. Most ski resorts open by early December, so you can get an early start on the slopes for the season, or just take part in the lively après-ski experience in iconic destinations like Val d'Isère and Chamonix. What's more, many villages like the châteaux-studded Annecy amp up the charm with cozy Christmas markets throughout the month. Winter in the Alps is never cheap, but try visiting earlier in the month before school holidays for the best room rates.

Make the trek to the Finnish Lapland for the ultimate Arctic experience. Finland's northernmost region promises a deep layer of snow all winter, perfect for skiing or sledding down the longest toboggan run in Europe. Most flights to this region land in Rovaniemi, home to Santa Claus Village, where you can meet the man in red, step across the Arctic Circle or embark on a reindeer sleigh ride. Though you'll only see about four hours of daylight, this makes for prime conditions to view the dazzling aurora borealis from the comfort of one of the glass hotels in the region.

December is one of the most popular months to visit the Bahamas – and for good reason. By the time this month rolls around, the threat of hurricanes has passed, making it terrific time to enjoy the outdoors. Spend your days lounging on one of the Bahamas' many beaches, snorkeling or diving in the crystal-clear water or taking a boat tour to a private island . What's more, if you're visiting around the holidays, you'll catch the travel-worthy Junkanoo festival , which celebrates Bahamian culture with parades and festivities on Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Although Phuket, Thailand, offers a consistently warm climate year-round, its dry weather and calm water in December make this month a great time to visit. Plan on spending most of your time sunbathing, swimming, scuba diving and more at beautiful beaches like Nai Harn and Kata Noi. But remember, December falls within Phuket's peak tourist season, so you won't find many deals for flights and accommodations during this month. Avoid a holiday visit in late December for slightly better rates.

Located in the eastern Himalayas, Bhutan is a backpacker's dream due to its breathtaking landscapes and unmatched preservation. The remote kingdom's focus on cultural and environmental sustainability means heritage sites like the cliff-clinging Paro Taktsang and the riverside Punakha Dzong are never overcrowded. But cooler winter temperatures (averages range from the 30s to the 60s, depending on elevation) mean you'll encounter even fewer tourists. While a trip to this intriguing destination won't be cheap, a low-season visit can drive down the price of lodging and tours.

Nestled in southern Chilean Patagonia, this national park offers travelers a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Hailed among hikers as one of the most scenic destinations in the world, the park is home to turquoise lakes and dense forests, plus massive Grey Glacier and the towering granite of Cuernos del Paine. December offers up to 17 hours of daylight, allowing plenty of time for extensive hikes. But even though December is part of Patagonia's peak summer season, temperatures drop dramatically after nightfall, so visitors will want to pack layers.

This Hawaiian paradise is the perfect place to escape winter's onset. Weary travelers can thaw on colorful beaches like Punalu'u Beach (which has beautiful black sand ) and Papakolea Beach (a unique green sand option), while more adventurous types can go for a hike in 'Akaka Falls State Park or catch a glimpse of the more than 4,000-foot-tall Kilauea volcano at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. You'll likely contend with other snowbirds in December, but you'll find that hotel prices on the Big Island are still consistently lower than those on neighboring isles.

If Old Man Winter has you dreaming of warming things up, consider a trip to the Spice Island. Grenada, a tiny island in the Caribbean known for its aromatic spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, boasts steady temps in the 80s. And since December sits just between the rainy season and high tourism season, it's the perfect time to catch some rays without the crowds (or cost) of the months to come. Spend your days lounging on Grand Anse Beach or sampling the island's rich flavors at local markets or the House of Chocolate.

It's not surprising that dozens of holiday movies are set in New York. Dazzling sights like the iconic Christmas tree and ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center, decked-out window displays at Macy's and horse-drawn carriages in Central Park conjure up holiday cheer throughout the city. And while this metropolis offers plenty to do throughout the year, festive shows, Christmas-themed pop-up experiences and even the nip in the air make December one of New York's most magical months. Just be prepared for a bit of sticker shock; the holiday season is also one of the most popular (and expensive) times of year to visit.

If you're willing to brave the cold, travel to Prague for a fun and festive winter vacation. The city turns into a winter wonderland in December, with snow-dusted buildings and Christmas markets selling everything from locally made jewelry to toys to Christmas ornaments. Those with little ones in tow should try to arrive in early December when the annual St. Nicholas Eve event takes place. During this traditional celebration, you'll see Czechia's version of St. Nick, along with his angel and devil guides, hand out candy and other treats as they walk around the city.

While the Northern Hemisphere transitions to winter in December, Rio de Janeiro enters its peak summer season. And although this is one of the wettest times of the year here, you'll still enjoy optimal warmth and mostly sunny conditions. As such, there will be plenty of opportunities to see must-visit sights like the Christ the Redeemer statue or Sugarloaf Mountain. If you're keen on experiencing Rio's lively party scene during your visit, be sure to time your trip around Réveillon. This popular New Year's Eve celebration on Copacabana Beach draws millions of people annually with its music, dancing and fireworks.

The holiday season in Germany's fourth largest city can only be described as magical. Cologne hosts a handful of Christmas markets, including the popular Advent village at Cologne Cathedral, which boasts 150 stalls. When you're not taking in the city's imposing architecture or getting into the jovial spirit with a glass of Kölsch beer (a Cologne original), pop into Museum Ludwig to view modern art or the Chocolate Museum for tasty samples. Combat the dreary weather – average highs are in the low 40s and rain is common – by soaking away the chill at a thermal spa such as Neptunbad or Claudius Therme.

It's easy to fall in love with this Canadian destination, especially when it's covered in fresh snow. You'll be enchanted by Old Québec's sights and sounds as it transforms into a Christmas village. Shop for gifts (or for yourself) in Quartier Petit-Champlain, home to one of the oldest shopping streets in North America. Plus, with its 17th- and 18th-century architecture, French-speaking Quebec City allows you to soak up European culture without dropping the cash for a flight across the pond. Just be sure to bundle up; temperatures can drop to the single digits in December.

We wanted to book holiday travel, and I thought I could ask fellow travel writers for their advice. Everyone has a favorite place to travel in December, so here are all their recommendations. Where to Go with Kids in December

We love traveling at Christmas, but it’s always a struggle to find the “perfect destination”. There are plenty of outstanding places to go for Christmas in the US with kids, but sometimes you want a unique experience. We think you will be pleasantly surprised by all of these options. Everyone knows how incredible Alaska can be during the summer. Amazingly, it’s even more magical during winter!

While Alaska winters can be quite cold, joining in adventures like sled tubing, skiing, and ice skating is worth visiting.

Plus, there’s no shortage of fun winter festivals to partake in, making Alaska one of the best places to take kids in December.

Winter in Alaska is the ideal time to experience the aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights. The short days leave enough time to pet and feed reindeer, while the long nights call for stargazing or aurora chasing!

Just imagine how peaceful lounging in a cozy rental cabin by the fireplace can be after spending time bundled up outdoors. For added serenity, try soaking in the warm waters of Chena Hot Springs near Fairbanks. Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

The best place to visit in December with family is Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, also known as Christmas City, U.S.A.

Located in eastern Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley about an hour north of Philadelphia, Bethlehem has celebrated the holiday season since it was founded on Christmas Eve in 1741 by a sect of Christians known as Moravians!

Today, visitors can experience not just one, but 2 Christmas markets. One is centered in the downtown area, which is also decorated for the holiday season, while the other is located at the community’s once-abandoned steel mill.

Other highlights of visiting Bethlehem, PA, at Christmastime include holiday light displays, historic city tours, and charming local shops. – (Jim of Uncovering PA )

If you want to warm up a bit with a tropical winter getaway, look no further than Hawaii. Hawaii in December is usually in the low 80s and has wonderful breezes. Airfare and hotel rates are pretty reasonable if you go before the holidays. Remember that it’s one of the most popular holiday destinations, so plan on making those reservations early.

Winter is also the best time in Hawaii for whale watching. But the real fun has to do with Christmas in Hawaii! I mean, where else can you make snowmen out of sand? Or see hula dancers and ukulele ornaments? Then, you can turn on the radio to hear Hawaiian-style Christmas carols!

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is one of the best destinations to visit in December for various reasons. The crowds are smaller, so the streets don’t feel as congested as they do during the busier summer months. There are also so many things to do in Las Vegas , it’s impossible to be bored!

The weather is so much nicer in December. In July or August, the desert heat can quickly become unbearable, but in the winter, the average temperature ranges between 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. 

Vegas hotels are all decked out in adorable Christmas decorations throughout December, so it’s easy to get into the festive spirit.

Since each hotel in Vegas is like a complete theme park, it can take a full day just to explore each one, and they all offer some sort of free entertainment for the holidays.

Marathon Key, Florida

The pristine beaches of Marathon Key, Florida , are enough to draw tourists from around the globe in any month. However, during the month of December, when the rest of the Northern Hemisphere is under the cold of winter, Marathon is a haven.

The warm ocean waters keep Marathon Key a warm 85 degrees throughout the year. Swim, snorkel, dive, or motorboat around the key either on the Gulf or Atlantic side.

Sombrero Beach is the perfect place to start a vacation. White sand, beautiful palm trees, and an ocean breeze will make this tropical vacation a lasting memory.

Need a day off from the beach? Head to the Aquarium or the Turtle Hospital, both have days worth of activities to enjoy. Don’t miss out on the amazing seafood restaurants and live music while you’re in Marathon Key, Florida.

New York City, New York

New York City may be one of the best places to travel in December! The Big Apple is dressed up in its holiday finest with fantastical window displays, amazing light shows, and holiday cheer around every corner.

With over 50,000 lights and Swarovski crystals, the Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center is beautiful both day and night.

Stroll along Fifth Avenue to marvel at the whimsical window displays at department stores like Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue. And don’t miss the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall!

San Diego, California

Not only is San Diego one of the most beautiful places to visit, but there are so many amazing things to do in December! It is one of our favorite travel destinations in December, as it is warm yet still full of holiday spirit and plenty of Christmas traditions.

One of the best holiday traditions is the annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights, which has been happening for just over 50 years. Boat owners deck out their boats in brilliant displays and parade through the bay in a free show that draws over 100,000 people every year!

Another excellent event is Hotel del Coronado ’s Skating by the Sea, where you can ice skate with phenomenal ocean views.

December in San Diego usually still has some nice weather, which means you can continue to enjoy year-round activities, including hiking.

Washington, DC

DC is a popular tourist destination for much of the year, and December is no exception. The US capital puts on a vibrant show of holiday festivity, and much of it is free! For fewer crowds, try to visit early in the month.

The US Botanic Garden is one of our favorite stops in December in DC. Each year, a huge train display weaves through leaves and flowers. Plus, you can see plant-based models of all the Monuments! Go first thing or late in the day, as lines get quite long. The Zoolights are also beautiful and great with little ones.

Other excellent December activities are participating in the wreath-laying at Arlington Cemetery, the National Christmas tree/Hannukah Menorah lighting, ice skating, the Nutcracker, and so much more. Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park in December is one of the most famous national parks and the ultimate winter wonderland.

The crowds have diminished from the summer, and a blanket of snow dresses up the already lovely landscape. Wildlife, including wolves, elk, and bison, have moved to the valley floors and are easier to spot.

We like to soak in the Boiling River Hot Springs, cross-country ski on the many groomed trails, and snowshoe in peace and warm up at the hotel dining rooms. You can take a snow coach to the interior of the park – Old Faithful area and Canyon – or drive to Mammoth Hot Springs and through the Northern Range. – (Mel of Yellowstone Trips )

Looking for sunshine and culture this December? Look no further than Mexico City. This hot spot is our favorite – just a 3.5-hour direct flight from LA (or 5 hours from New York).

Topping our list of things to do in December includes visiting the ancient pyramids at Teotihuacan. Just 30 miles northeast of Mexico City, you’ll feel like a real-life Indiana Jones here!

Another must-visit is Frida Kahlo’s “Blue House .” This museum houses rare artwork and tells the story of Kahlo’s birthplace, childhood residence, and where she passed.

Finally, no trip to Mexico City would be complete without checking out its delicious food scene. Get your fill of churros – 24 hours a day – at the famed El Moro. Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

December is a great time to visit the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, with tranquil, warm weather. And of course, the calm seas make for great snorkeling, diving, and fishing!

Temperatures are a bit lower at around 82°F, even dipping as low as 75°, so the days are warm, and the nights are comfortable.

The area is well known for all its well-preserved Mayan temples, such as Chichen Itza . Dry weather and mild temperatures make for perfect conditions to explore these archaeological ruins.

Don’t miss diving with bull sharks, an exhilarating adventure! Another favorite in this area is the Cenotes, limestone caves with crystal clear water. Where to Go in the Caribbean in December

December might be the best month to visit Aruba, with its warm white sand beaches and holiday decorations.

The average temperature on the island is always between 77 and 84° Fahrenheit, and there’s always a strong breeze off the water. It never feels too hot or too cold, but just right.

Families will love the holidays in Aruba as most of the resorts are decked out in Christmas lights and decor. Some restaurants and stores will have Aruban fruitcakes, pumpkin soup, and ponche crema (similar to eggnog), so be sure to try these traditional dishes.

There are plenty of things to do in Aruba with teens and kids of all ages, from playing on the beach to snorkeling and exploring Arikok National Park. For fun in the sun during the holidays, Aruba is the place to be!

Puerto Rico

Another one of our favorite Caribbean islands to visit in December is Puerto Rico . Daily temperatures hover around 80°F and there is constant sunshine.

The holiday season here is in full force from Thanksgiving until mid-January when the San Sebastián Street festival closes out the island’s celebrations.

There are festivities around the island throughout December. A couple that shouldn’t be missed are the Feria de Artesanías which features over 200 local vendors selling their products (perfect for holiday shopping) and the Festival de las Máscaras in Hatillo where everyone dons colorful costumes and masks and parades through the town.

Families will decorate their homes right after Thanksgiving (if not before) and leave up the lights until mid-January (and beyond).

Some Puerto Rican dishes you won’t want to miss are coquito (Puerto Rican eggnog), pasteles (similar to tamales, but wrapped in plantain leaves), and arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas).

Of course, you will want to spend time on the Puerto Rican beaches , explore El Yunque rainforest , and shop and eat your way through Old San Juan .

December in Central America

Costa Rica is wonderful to visit any time of year, but December marks the start of Costa Rica’s dry season. This makes it perfect for holiday celebrations, trips to the beach, and exploring the towns and cities decked out in festive decor!

If you plan to visit Costa Rica in December , be sure to book your hotels early . Many North American families take vacations to Costa Rica during the holiday season to enjoy the weather, outdoor adventures, and beautiful beaches.

While you’re there, don’t miss the Festival de la Luz in San José, a light parade where locals and tourists alike enjoy street performers, floats, and musicians.

Guatemala is one of the best places to travel in December. Due to its location, the weather in this Central American country is warm year-round. This provides anyone with a great getaway, especially if you are from the Great White North like me!

December in South America

Argentina is a perfect place to visit in December, especially if you wish to escape a cold, snowy Northern Hemisphere winter! December is the start of summer, so days are long and warm. It’s ideal for seeing the incredibly diverse sights of Argentina!

Marvel at the awe-inspiring Iguazu Falls and the jaw-dropping Moreno Glacier. Explore the wild landscapes of the Valdes Peninsula and catch the end of whale watching season.

Visit the hatching penguin chicks at the enormous penguin colony in Punta Tombo, or head to Patagonia to enjoy incredible hikes in Los Glaciares National Park.

Although weather conditions are distinctly variable at any time of the year, December is an excellent time to visit. This is when there’s a higher chance of sunny days and dry weather, which is all-important if you want envy-inducing photographs from the trip!

The beginning of December is the very start of the high season, meaning places have fewer tourists and trails are quieter. Make the most of this by trekking the W in Torres del Paine National Park , Patagonia’s most famous hike.

This trek will take you through glorious mountain landscapes of glaciers and ancient forest to reach three picturesque, pronged granite towers!

Canada in December

Visiting Whistler in December does not disappoint. It’s truly one of the most magical times of the year, when Whistler Village sparkles like a fairyland with holiday lights!

There’s an uplifting atmosphere in the air as you wander around the village and ride the Peak2Peak Gondola to the top of the mountain. December is our favorite month if you’re visiting Whistler with kids, since the family Après ski activities are in full swing.

The average snowfall in Whistler in December is 170 cm (almost 5.5 feet), making it a fantastic time of year to have fun in the snow. If you love skiing or snowboarding, you’ll want to hit the slopes and terrain parks.

But even if you’re not, there are plenty of other things to do in Whistler, both outdoors and indoors. You can bundle up and go on a fun dog sled ride or learn to be a musher and drive your own team.

Other fun outdoor activities in Whistler in December are snowshoeing, ice skating, tubing, and sleigh rides. You can also take part in the Dress Like Santa Ski Day, where everyone dresses up in a Santa or Mrs. Claus costume!

December Travel in Europe

Amsterdam, netherlands.

Amsterdam is well known for its exciting nightlife and gorgeous canals. This thriving city is easily accessible by airplane, train, or by car.

In Amsterdam, you’ll be able to visit one of many Christmas markets, as well as visit the Christmas tree at Dam Square. With over 40.000 LED lights, the tree lights up the Royal Palace. 

Don’t miss the Amsterdam Light Festival. Here you can admire over 30 light sculptures by boat or street. Odds are you’ll find yourself ice skating over one of many canals in the heart of this gorgeous city, so be prepared!

Athens, Greece

Though Greece is typically considered a summer destination, I would argue that winter makes a wonderful time to visit Athens. Not only do the temperatures drop enough that it’s actually comfortable to explore the ancient town, but it also stays much warmer with more sunshine than is found in other parts of Europe.

While all the main attractions stay open during the off-peak season, they are much less crowded than in the height of summer. You’ll be able to explore the Parthenon and other famous sights in relative peace and quiet, which is a bonus in my book!

If you visit Greece at Christmas time , the city comes alive with sparkling lights and festive decorations. And if you’re lucky enough to be in Athens on New Year’s Eve , you’ll enjoy some fantastic parties or fireworks displays with the Parthenon making the most incredible backdrop. – (Anna at Would Be Traveller )

Barcelona, Spain

We loved visiting Barcelona, Spain, in winter ! The temperatures are much milder than in most of Europe, but the holiday magic is alive and well. All of the streets and alleys are decked with creative lighting displays as the city competes with other rivals around the country for the best holiday lights.

There’s a convivial atmosphere as Spaniards stroll the streets enjoying their time off work, but the throngs of tourists don’t arrive until spring break a few months later, so it’s a great time of year to get a more local feel. – (Melissa of The Family Voyage )

Berlin, Germany

I adore visiting Berlin in December! You can experience the beautiful Christmas markets that come to life all over the city. These are some of my favorite places to shop for unique traditional Berlin souvenirs .

My favorite Berlin Christmas market is the Gendarmenmarkt, but I also love Spandau and Charlottenburg Palace markets.

If you do visit the palace, make sure to set aside time to go on a tour inside. The sumptuous interiors are absolutely stunning, and in December, you won’t have to fight through the throngs of other tourists during your visit!

Brussels, Belgium

Brussels, Belgium, is one of the most overlooked European cities. It has centuries of fascinating history, great food, and lots of things to do to keep you entertained for a long weekend or more.

From its beautiful, UNESCO-listed Grand Place (the city’s central square) to the dozens of street art murals that make up its Comic Book Route, Brussels is a mix of historic and modern.

When you add in the excellent Belgian chocolate, craft beer, and unforgettable waffles, you get a destination full of scenic beauty, educational experiences, and fun with a touch of gluttony.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest in December is an unexpected surprise with its combination of family-friendly attractions, historic sites, and traditional Christmas markets.

Two major markets are located at Vorosmarty Square and the other in front of the Basilica tower. Don’t miss the light display projected onto the Basilica and the mulled wine to keep the frigid temps away!

Looking for more winter fun? Be sure to soak in the thermal baths and cruise in the evening along the Danube River to see the historic buildings lit up. We also suggest heading to the Buda side of Budapest to explore Fisherman’s Bastion. Traveling with older kids? There are plenty of fun things to do in Budapest with teens .

Colmar, France

Colmar is such a magical place to visit in December! The town itself looks as if it’s from a fairytale, with all of its brightly colored half-timbered buildings. In December, Colmar goes all out with decorations for the holidays. It is one of our all-time favorite European Christmas markets to visit with kids .

There are multiple Christmas markets throughout the city, including one for children. The city’s canals (dubbed “Little Venice”) make for a gorgeous stroll through Colmar and offer plenty of photo opportunities.

The city is only a 2.5-hour train ride from Paris, making it the perfect overnight or weekend getaway during the holiday season. A word of advice, though: Colmar is quite popular in the month of December, so make sure to book accommodations early! – (Ashley of Daley Family Travels )

Cologne, Germany

The best time to visit Cologne, Germany, has to be in the wintertime, during their annual Christmas market. The Köln Weihnachtsmarkt is one of the best Christmas markets we’ve been to in Europe. Seven themed markets are spread throughout the city, and you can visit them all on the Christmas Tram.

One of the reasons to visit a Christmas market in Germany is the food, and Cologne has some of the best foods we’ve tasted. The highlight was definitely the salmon roasting on an open fire and the Reibekuchen (potato pancakes). Let’s not forget the Gluhwein to keep you warm during the cold winter days.

Cologne’s Christmas market is also the perfect place to purchase that one-of-a-kind souvenir. With so many handmade, locally made products on sale, it won’t be hard to find a unique gift item for that special someone. – (Skylar at Skylar Arias Adventures )

Dublin, Ireland

One of the best destinations to visit in December in Dublin , Ireland. The average Dublin high temperature in December is 47 F, with a low of 37. All things considered, that’s pretty mild. Also, it gets wintery and festive, with very little chance of snow. Which is a plus for me.

Three reasons to visit Dublin in December: 1) to avoid the crowds, 2) there are tons of things indoors, and 3) the Christmas decorations are in full effect.

Since December is off-season, the crowds are thinner, but all of the attractions remain open. 

There are A LOT of indoor attractions, in case it’s cold or rainy. Some of the popular indoor sites are Kilmainham Gaol, the Guinness Storehouse, the Old Jameson Distillery, Dublin Castle, Christ Church Cathedral, and Trinity College Dublin.  

Three-Quarters of the population of Ireland is Catholic, which means that there are a lot of people celebrating Christmas. Not only are the streets festively decorated in Christmas cheer, but so are the shops and pubs around town.

Milan, Italy

If you’ve never considered Italy in winter , it’s definitely worth a visit. Milan is possibly Italy’s most cosmopolitan city, and it fully embraces the holiday season.

In the plaza surrounding its famous Duomo you’ll encounter a giant decorated Christmas tree and an outdoor holiday market from the start of December. The nearby Galleria boasts equally elaborate decorations along with some of Milan’s most high-end shopping.

And the holiday spirit is not limited to the historical center. Throughout the month of December in Milan , indoor and outdoor holiday markets abound across the city.

Even away from the markets, you’ll come across the distinct aroma of roasted chestnuts as you stroll from vendors that seem to be on every corner. Grab yours with a mulled wine or thick and gooey hot chocolate, and you’ll understand how the Milanesi have endless energy to stroll the city streets and take in the holiday atmosphere.

There is something magical about Norway in winter ! It really comes alive when you have the chance to bundle up in a thick winter jacket, cap with a fur top, and lined gloves to go exploring in the snow and ice.

I love to go sightseeing with my camera for hours, then tuck into a café with a fireplace and have a cup of hot chocolate.

And although you may think it’s freezing outside, don’t believe everything you hear. Due to the Gulf Stream, the west coast of Norway rarely drops below zero.

Looking for a country to visit in December? Well, if you still haven’t visited Paris in winter , then you should definitely go at this time of year! I’m not going to lie, winter in Paris is generally cold, but it is the most magical moment to visit the capital of France.

It’s the only time of the year you can enjoy visiting the city without bumping into people or having people ruin your photos. Paris is always crowded, except in December, so there is no better time to visit!

Portimão, Portugal

If you’re planning a trip to Portugal , Portimão is a beautiful port city to visit. It’s located in the Algarve region of Portugal, the southernmost part of the country. This beautiful city has a very busy port for boats, particularly tour boats heading along the Algarve coasts’ famous caves.

Though much quieter in the winter, Portimao still has boat service and so many beautiful things to see. While not ideal for swimming in December, the beautiful beaches in Portimao still provide access to the Atlantic and the beauty of the rugged and infamous Algarve cliffs.

Prague, Czechia

Prague is the ultimate destination for a December vacation with kids. If you’re looking for culture, history, great food, and magical wintertime charm, this amazing city has it all!

Several great Christmas markets are set up all over town. But the best places to go for all the feels are the Old Square, Wenceslas Square, and Prague Castle, where you can shop, eat, and sightsee to your heart’s content!

Sweet villages, spectacular mountains, and fairy-tale castles make Romania one of the best places to go for Christmas. When I visited Romania last winter, I found out the magnificent landscapes I’d seen in photos look much more impressive under a blanket of snow!

Bucharest , Romania’s capital city, is brimming with interesting architecture and cozy cafes. In central Romania’s Transylvania region, fortified cities – Sighisoara and Sibiu among them – offer a mix of fascinating history and nature.

Skiing and snow sports are popular winter activities, and you can find great fields around Brasov. Since Romania is a predominantly Orthodox nation, there are plenty of holiday festivities to join in, including Christmas markets in most of the bigger cities.

December is the off-season in Romania. If you’re traveling by train through Transylvania (which I highly recommend), you don’t have to stress about tickets selling out. Rovaniemi, Finland

What better place to visit in December than the home of Santa Claus?! It’s easy to travel from Helsinki to Rovaniemi via car, train, or plane, and visitors will be rewarded with a winter wonderland and a white Christmas!

Visits to Santa Claus Village and Snowman World are sure to put a smile on everyone’s faces. There is snow tubing, ice skating, and even a visit with Santa Claus himself! If you’re lucky, you’ll also be able to see the Northern Lights during your trip to Rovaniemi . It’s a definite bucket list trip for families.

Salzburg, Austria

Picture yourself with a mulled wine in your hand, walking the narrow, snow-covered streets of Salzburg. This is one of the most picturesque cities in Austria , and winter is Austria magical.

December is a great time to visit the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. You can go to the house where he grew up and have a famous Sachertorte or Salzburger Nockerl before you enjoy one of the three Christmas markets here.

You can choose between the oldest Christmas market, which is situated in front of the Salzburg Cathedral. Or you can attend the Christmas market at the fortress Hohensalzburg with an amazing view over the city. One of my favorite Christmas markets in Salzburg is at Castle Hellbrunn.

Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is a fantastic destination to visit in December or any other winter month. It hosts one of the coziest Christmas markets in Europe.

Open from November to January each year, this Christmas market showcases some of the best local handcrafted products and a variety of traditional Christmas delicacies and drinks.

Zakopane, Poland

Many travelers head to Warsaw in winter , but few places are quite as magical as Zakopane. During December, the Polish village that sits at the base of the Tatra Mountains turns into a Christmas wonderland.

Christmas markets and stalls pop up throughout town, along with the year-round marketplace perfect for unique Christmas gift shopping. The celebrations around Zakopane are in full swing, too, with festive events and New Year fun.

From Bora Bora to the Caribbean, our family has spent a few Christmases on the beach. Last December, we visited the Maldives, where we spent a few days watching the sun rise and listening to the ocean from our overwater villas. It was the most magical time of all!

Anytime is a good time to visit the Maldives since the temperatures hover over a balmy 80F. But the best time to visit the Maldives is said to be from November to April.

First, let’s talk about the great food in Nagoya. I highly recommend you try steaming hot Miso Nikomi Udon, which is Udon noodles in a dark Miso soup that’s still boiling hot in an earthenware pot. Exactly the right food for those cold winter days! You might also want to try Kishimen noodles , flat and broad noodles served in a hot broth.

When it comes to winter activities in Nagoya, there is nothing better than a visit to Nabana no Sato, a flower garden with the most beautiful winter illumination in all of Japan. Dubai in December is the perfect sunny escape. Sitting on the Arabian Gulf, December brings with it pleasant daytime temperatures of around 75F, ideal for enjoying the city’s miles of sandy beaches, sailing from the beautiful marina, or taking a deeper exploration into the desert and nearby Hatta Mountains.
