Mountain Trails
As a mountain bike enthusiast, I found the Trek Marlin 6 an excellent choice for tackling mountain trails. With its frontend suspension fork and Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, I discovered it offers more control and comfort even on rough terrain.
Furthermore, the Marlin 6's Shimano Deore gears provide smooth and efficient shifting, making it easier to climb steep sections. Plus, the wider Bontrager XR2 Comp tires give improved traction – an essential factor when going downhill on loose surfaces.

The bike's powerful hydraulic disc brakes inspire confidence when commuting in changing weather conditions, as they offer consistent stopping power even in the rain.
Furthermore, the bike's coil spring suspension fork with hydraulic lockout enables a more comfortable and efficient pedaling experience, especially during long commutes on bumpy roads.
Rear rack specifications:

Additionally, the Alpha Silver Aluminum frame features multiple bottle cage mounts, allowing riders to stay hydrated during long rides or carry a hydration pack when venturing off the beaten path.
One standout aspect of the Marlin 6 is its potential for upgrades. For instance, it's dropper post compatible, allowing riders to enhance their off-road experience further. It also supports a maximum width of 2.2 inches, so riders can opt for wider tires to tackle more challenging terrain.
Notable upgrades:
- Front suspension: RockShox Recon RL fork with 100mm travel
- Dropper post: Compatible with various seat post diameters
- Tires: Wider options available up to 2.2 inches
Upgrades and Accessories
As an entry-level mountain bike with several attractive features and specifications, customizing and upgrading the Trek Marlin 6 can significantly enhance your mountain biking experience.
Handlebars and Saddles
One of the first upgrades you might consider for your Trek Marlin 6 is a new handlebar or saddle that better fits your preferences. An example of a great handlebar upgrade would be the Raceface stem to improve the handling and responsiveness during your ride.
For saddles, various choices include weight, cushioning, and material like steel rails. Some notable options include saddles made of XR2 Comp or the more budget-friendly saddles made of Bontrager alloy. These provide comfort and durability for riders tackling rough terrains for extended periods.
Additional Mounts
To enhance both performance and convenience, add-ons and mounts are available on the Trek Marlin 6. One versatile component is the Blendr Stem , which allows for quick, secure attachment of items such as lights, GPS devices, and action cameras.
Moreover, for practical storage options, update your mountain bike with rear rack and kickstand mounts, accommodating pannier bags, or other storage solutions.
These mounts complement front suspension forks like the SR Suntour XCT 30, which improves the bike's ability to carry additional weight.
Upgrading pedals on mountain bikes can significantly improve your riding experience, especially for first-time mountain bikers. High-quality, durable pedals are available for a range of budgets, such as the affordable pedals that can be found for $40-50 or sometimes less.
Environmental factors and different riding styles mean that pedals will undergo different levels of wear and tear, so remember to maintain and replace your pedals as required.
Hydration Solutions
Numerous options are available for attaching water bottle cages and hydration packs. Consider, for example, incorporating either XS or ML L XL XXL Bontrager alloy cages that suit different frame sizes to ensure your water bottle remains secure and accessible throughout your ride.
Utilizing a hydration pack is another option, which not only provides water but also offers additional storage for essential tools, spare clothing, and snacks. Indeed, having the right hydration solutions can make the difference between a great ride and a miserable journey.
Maintenance and Warranty
It's essential to maintain your bike's chain. A well-kept chain ensures smooth gear shifts and improved performance. Remember to clean it regularly and apply chain lubricant when necessary.
Another vital maintenance aspect is caring for your bike's hydraulic disc brakes. The Trek Marlin 6 comes with powerful Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, which provide reliable stopping power even in rough terrain. Regularly check your brake pads for wear and replace them when needed.
Below are some additional maintenance tips to help prolong your bike's life:
- Clean your bike regularly to prevent dirt buildup in delicate components.
- Apply grease to your seat tube and other moving parts to prevent rust.
- Check your tires' air pressure and maximum width before every ride.
- Inspect cables for fraying or damage, and replace them when necessary.

Trek Marlin 6 Gen 2 Review: Beginner’s Dream Mountain Bike
The Trek Marlin 6 2023 is the newest iteration of the entry-level XC hardtail family designed for light trail riding, gravel paths, fire roads, and mixed-terrain commuting.
The 2023 Gen 2 model is the same as the Trek Marlin 6 2022, only with different colors and a new name. Trek overhauled its naming system for the upcoming year, referring to the models by the number of generations there have been. So the latest version of a Trek bike has the highest ‘Gen’ number.
This Trek Marlin 6 review will cover the bike’s main specs and highlights, answer some buyer questions, and provide our verdict on who should buy one.
How Much is the Trek Marlin 6?
Trek Marlin 6 price is $850 and sits in the middle of the price range of the five Marlin models. The cheapest model costs $630, and the most expensive is $1,330. Alongside the 820, the Marlin is Trek’s most affordable mountain bike family.
- Shimano Deore 10-speed drivetrain
- Rack and kickstand mounts
- Progressive sizing
- Low-performance coil fork
Trek Marlin 6 Gen 2 Full List of Specs
Trek marlin 6 gen 2 full review.
In this section, we will cover the main features of the Trek Marlin 6 Gen 2 and what makes it stand out in the sub-$1,000 MTB category.
Trek Marlin 6 Gen 2 is available in four modern paint jobs that will suit any type of rider.
What Type of Bike Is a Trek Marlin 6?
The Trek Marlin 6 MTB is a modern-looking cross-country hardtail with a 100mm coil suspension fork, perfect for beginner mountain bikers. Unfortunately, the rudimentary suspension limits the Marlin 6 to relatively mild trails. Nonetheless, it makes an excellent day-to-day bike for commuting, transport, and leisure.
Alpha Silver Aluminum Frame
Trek uses its Alpha Silver aluminum frame for the Marlin 6. Thanks to the company’s consistent design and materials innovations, these frames outperform the similarly-priced competition in compliance and comfort.
Internal cable routing means Marlin 6 looks sleek and neat, while it also protects the cables from excessive wear and tear.
The frame has quick-release axles, tidy internal cable routing, and mounts for a rack and kickstand, allowing you to equip the Marlin for commuting or bikepacking. One unusual feature of this bike is the curved top tube on the smaller models (XS, S) that lowers the standover height for a better fit.
Is the Trek Marlin 6 Good for Jumps?
No, the Trek Marlin 6 isn’t good for jumps. Unfortunately, as a cheap hardtail, this bike uses a low-performance coil-spring Suntour XCT 30 fork with 100mm of travel (80mm on XS). This fork performs poorly on bumpy trails but is adequate for day-to-day riding and light off-roading .
Thankfully, the fork has preload and hydraulic lockout settings, but the headtube isn’t tapered, meaning it will be harder to upgrade.
Shimano Deore 10-Speed Drivetrain
The standout feature for us is the Shimano Deore M4100 10-speed drivetrain. The Trek Marlin 6 is one of the only bikes with this hardware at $850 or below. In addition, an 11-46t cassette and 30t chainring provide plenty of gearing for steep gradients.
Shimano Deore 10-speed drivetrain is a standard in this price range across the industry, as it provides plenty of gear range and smooth gear shifting.
Generally, sub-$1,000 mountain bikes have cheaper drivetrains that shift poorly and lose efficiency quickly. However, Deore M4100 is durable and smooth-shifting , and the single chainring makes it easier to maintain.
Tektro Hydraulic Disc Brakes
Another excellent inclusion for a bike of this price is hydraulic disc brakes. Although entry-level, Tektro’s HD-M275 brakeset with 160mm rotors performs well at this price range and for a bike of this spec.
Hydraulic discs allow you to stop safely in wet weather and with plenty of power and reliability in most situations. However, if you plan on tackling advanced trails, neither this bike nor the brakes are adequate.
2.20″ Tires and Progressive Wheel Sizing
The Trek Marlin 6 has Bontrager XR2 Comp tires for handling hardpack trails, gravel paths, and pavement where traction is relatively predictable. These XC-style tires roll fast and provide decent grip but will slip and slide in wet trail conditions.
Even though the tires are not tubeless-ready, they are wide enough to provide plenty of traction in varying conditions that come with modern mountain biking.
The XS and Small sizes of this bike have 27.5″ rims, while the others use 29ers. Progressive sizing makes the Marlin fit more consistently across rider heights. Unfortunately, the wheelset and tires are not tubeless-ready.
Trek Marlin 6 Gen 2 Sizing Chart
- XS — 4’9″-5’1″ / 145-155cm
- S — 5’1″-5’5″ / 155-165cm
- M — 5’5″-5’8″ / 165-173cm
- M/L — 5’8″-5’11” / 173-180cm
- L — 5’11”-6’2″ / 180-188cm
- XL — 6’2″-6’5″ / 188-195cm
- 2XL — 6’5″-6’8″ / 195-203cm
Who Is Trek Marlin 6 Gen 2 Best Suited For?
The Marlin 6 Trek MTB is best for beginner mountain bikers who want to start learning the skills and techniques of the sport on light trails. In addition, cyclists who want a bike for comfortable day-to-day use, running errands, and mixed-terrain commutes will enjoy the Marlin 6.
We recommend the Marlin 6 Gen 2 to beginner to early-intermediate mountain bikers who mostly stay on light trails and rough dirt and gravel roads.
Again, this bike is limited by its cheap fork, so if you want a bike to grow into and challenge your mountain biking skills, you may want to check out one of the higher-end Trek MTBs.

Is Marlin 6 Gen 2 a Good Buy?
We think the Trek Marlin 6 Gen 2 is a solid choice at just $850. The new-style frame and geometry make it look like the real deal, even if it can’t handle hard riding.
Most of the Marlin 6’s components are excellent for the price range, including Shimano’s Deore drivetrain, hydraulic disc brakes, durable Bontrager tires, and a quality frame with solid ride characteristics.
Don’t miss out on this excellent deal if you’re looking for a cheap do-it-all bike that’s at home on pavement, light mountain trails, and everything in between.

Trek Marlin 6 Review: Sufficient for Beginners, but…
CyclistsHub is supported by its readers. We may receive a commission if you buy products using our links.
This article is an in-depth review of the Trek Marlin 6 , an entry-level mountain bike.
I interviewed one of its owners. We discussed several aspects you might be interested in knowing before purchasing, such as whether the price matches the quality, its advantages and disadvantages, and more.
KEY TAKEAWAY
Marlin 6 is a good MTB for beginners . It uses a modern 1X drivetrain that is simple but offers limited gears (10spd only). Marlin 6 is ideal for non-demanding terrain like flow trails but not the best choice for more challenging terrain due to its short fork travel of 100mm and the absence of a dropper post. Feel free to buy it here or read on for more info.

Tomasz’s Experience with Trek Marlin 6
What other alternatives did you consider before buying the Marlin 6, and why did the Marlin 6 win out in the end?
I compared various brands before purchasing the Marlin 6. I found that the Marlin 6 outperformed them in terms of accessories, workmanship, and price.
Have you bought the bike online or in a store?
I purchased the bike from an online store, and it arrived fully assembled and adjusted, making it 100% ready to ride.
For what type of riding do you use this bike the most?
I exclusively use the Marlin 6 bike for cycling trails and adventure rides. I enjoy exploring off-the-beaten-track trails and paths, riding mainly on side roads, riverbank embankments, and through forests.
How would you describe its riding characteristics?
I think the Marlin 6 bike has excellent riding characteristics. It’s very comfortable and rides exceptionally well. It’s sturdy and torsionally strong. The handlebars and shifters are comfortable and don’t tire out the wrists and hands.
Does the front suspension work well?
The front suspension of the Marlin 6 bike works very well. It absorbs bumps effortlessly, and even when locked on even ground or hills, it performs well.
Would you like to have more gears, or are you ok with the modern 1X drivetrain?
Modern 1X derailleurs have limitations, especially on long straight sections where you can feel the absence of a second sprocket in the front. In other words, the gear range on Marlin 6 is limited.
How comfortable is it on a scale from 1 to 10?
I think I can give it a solid 10 without much thought.
What is your overall feeling from the ride?
I am very satisfied with my riding experience on the Marlin 6 bike. It handles well, and I am glad I bought it.
Is there something you don’t like about it?
I don’t have any major complaints about the Marlin 6 bike, but there is room for improvement in the modern 1X drivetrain. As I mentioned earlier, it can sometimes feel like something is missing.
What do you like the most about it?
What I like the most about it are the construction of the frame, the colors, and the very comfortable steering.
Trek Marlin 6 Alternatives
The Trek Marlin 6 alternatives include bikes from the same family, such as the Marlin 4 (cheaper) or Marlin 6 (more expensive), and MTBs from other brands. I recommend checking out my articles on beginner mountain bikes or mountain bikes for under $1000 for more inspiration.
Would you recommend buying the Trek Marlin 6?
Yes. I recommend buying Marlin 6. This bike has exceeded all my expectations, allowing me to access otherwise difficult places. I highly recommend this bike to anyone looking for a bike in this price range.
Tomasz, thank you again for your time and for sharing your experience!
Trek Marlin FAQ
The main difference between Trek Marlin and Trek Dual-Sport is their intended use and design. Trek Marlin is an entry-level mountain bike series designed for off-road trail riding, while the Trek Dual-Sport is a versatile hybrid bike capable of handling a wider range of terrain, including pavement, gravel roads, and light off-road trails.
The main differences between Trek Marlin 4 and Marlin 6 are in the groupset and weight. Marlin 4 uses 3×7spd while the Marlin 6 has a 1×10spd drivetrain. The 3X drivetrains are becoming obsolete because of their complexity and high demands on correct shifting. That’s why I recommend spending more on Marlin 6.
The main differences between Trek Marlin 5 and Marlin 6 are in the groupset and weight. Marlin 5 uses 2×8spd while the Marlin 6 has a 1×10spd drivetrain. The 1X drivetrains are popular due to their simplicity, ease of use, and lower weight. I believe the Marlin 6 is worth paying more. Despite the narrower gear range, its use is much easier for beginners.

Product features
Will my bike have a curved top tube.
Smaller frames have a top tube that dips down as it approaches the seat tube. This design makes for a lower standover height, which is good for shorter riders because it allows them to straddle their bike more easily. Larger frame sizes have a straight top tube because taller riders with longer legs typically don’t have the same issues with standover height.
Fit for every rider
Marlin comes in seven frame sizes to suit riders of any height, and Smart Wheel Size ensures you’re on the fastest wheel that fits. The smallest sizes even come with short-reach brake levers and narrower handlebars that give smaller riders better comfort and control.
High tech, high value
Marlin looks and feels great. It’s packed with features usually found only on more expensive bikes, like a stylish frame with internal shift cable and brake hose routing, which can help your cables last longer by protecting them from the elements.
Suspension lockout
Locked suspension means your fork remains inactive, increasing pedaling efficiency. Perfect for extended road sections where efficiency is more important than bump absorption.
Rack mounts
Going for a long ride? Rack mounts make carrying accessories a breeze.
Blendr stem
Bontrager stem technology lets you clip your gear directly to the stem for clean looks, maximum user friendliness.
Internal cable routing
We route shift and brake cables through the frame to keep things clean and simple. And it looks great, too.

Chainstay mounts make it easy to install a rear kickstand that stays out of your way and supports bikes of all sizes. No more laying or leaning.

Moscow Muled
Top 6 gin-gin and gin mule recipes.
Mar 13, 2020
If you like gin, you'll love these top six recipes for the Gin-Gin Mule and the Gin Mule, which are delicious twists on the classic Moscow Mule. Get your cocktail glasses ready and let's dive in!
The Gin-Gin Mule
Since the introduction of the Moscow Mule in the first half of the 20th century, cocktail enthusiasts from all over the world have tweaked the recipe here and there, resulting in hundreds of variations, including many with gin.
One of the most popular variations of the Gin Mule is known as the Gin-Gin Mule, which was introduced in 2000 by Audrey Saunders —the owner of The Pegu Club in New York City.
Basically, Saunders’s creation is a crossover between a mojito, which is a drink with rum, and a Moscow Mule—a vodka drink. Gin replaces vodka and rum. On the other hand, ginger beer, which is an integral part of a gin Moscow Mule, is used to make sure that the bittersweet flavor of gin doesn’t dominate the drink.
In making the first glass of Gin-Gin drink, Saunders used homemade ginger beer, which is preferred by many even today. This is because it has a stronger flavor than commercial ginger beer that is carbonated.
Besides gin and ginger beer, the Gin-Gin Mule includes lime juice, which is an essential ingredient in any Mule.
Gin-Gin Mule Recipes
One of the most exciting things about the Gin-Gin Mule is that it’s quite easy to make. All you need is a few ingredients, a glass, a shaker, and, within a few minutes, your drink will be ready. Here are some easy recipes you can put together in a matter of minutes:
Classic Gin Gin Mule Recipe
Prep Time: 3 minutes Serves: 1
Ingredients:
- 4 oz ginger beer
- 1 oz simple syrup
- ¾ oz lime juice
- 8 mint leaves
- Mint sprig
Instructions:
- In a cocktail shaker, muddle the mint leaves. This helps to release their flavors and aroma. Add the simple syrup and lime to the muddled mint.
- Add gin and ice to the mixture, then shake well.
- Put ice in a highball glass, then strain the gin, lime, and mint mixture into it.
- Top with ginger beer.
Classic Gin-Gin Mule for 30 Cocktails
- 32 oz ginger beer, homemade
- 32 oz simple syrup
- 23 oz fresh lime juice
- 6 bundles mint for muddling and garnish
- In a mixing glass, add the simple syrup, lime juice, and mint. Muddle well to extract the essence of the mint leaves.
- Add ginger beer, gin, and ice into the mixture.
- Garnish with mint and serve.
To make the process of preparing this drink for many people more convenient, premix the drinks and store them in the refrigerator. Since you’ll be using freshly squeezed lime juice, be careful not to prepare the drink too early as it may lose its flavor. With the drinks ready, all you’ll need to do is serve them in glasses and then garnish.
For both of these recipes, London Dry Gin comes highly recommended. It provides just the right amount of spiciness, one that will be balanced out by the lime and not get lost in the ginger beer.
In this Gin-Gin Mule cocktail recipe, you’ll notice that we have used homemade ginger beer. There's nothing quite like homemade ginger beer. It delivers a fizzy burn and an aromatic flush. Besides, there's no sterilization required, and you can play about with the ingredients. Here's a simple recipe for making it.
How to Prepare Homemade Ginger Beer
To make your homemade ginger beer, you’ll require:
- Fresh ginger, unpeeled
- ½ oz lime juice
- 2 tbsp light brown sugar
- Finely grate the unpeeled ginger. Boil the water in a pot then turn off the heat. Add the grated ginger and ½ oz lime juice into the water.
- Cover the pot and leave the mixture for an hour.
- Add the light brown sugar and stir well.
- Strain the mixture into a container. Press the ginger to extract all flavor.
- Allow the mixture to cool, then store in a bottle.
- Shake well before every use.
When stored in the refrigerator, your ginger beer will maintain its flavor for about two weeks. The sooner you use it, the better since it will eventually begin to ferment. Note that this kind of ginger beer will have a cloudy appearance.
The Gin-Gin Mule, thanks to the herbs, has a cooling flavor. It's a great summer drink when you need to cool down on a hot day. If you’ve already prepared your ginger beer, then all you’ll need is a bottle of gin, lime, and mint, and you can make your drink right away. Remember, when making your Mule with gin it’s best to use fresh mint and lime juice. This will give your cocktail maximum flavor and aroma.
Other Variations of the Gin Mule
Just like the Gin-Gin drink is a variation of the Moscow Mule, so does the Gin Mule have many of its own creative variations. Here are a few:
The Apple Gin Mule
Apple juice or apple cider will bring a tartness to the flavor of your drink. However, if you want it to be more pronounced, you should consider using cider. While the Gin Mule is a favorite among summer drinks, the Apple Gin mule is quite popular during fall. As a plus, apples are rich in phytochemicals, which are strong antioxidants. Enjoying Apple Gin Mule cocktails in moderation can, therefore, help you decrease the risk of some chronic diseases .
Celery and Cucumber Gin Mule
Nothing screams of crisp and fresh than a cucumber. Cucumber drinks are popular for quenching thirst during the hot months, and you can effectively add them to your mule, together with a celery syrup.
To make your celery syrup, mix ¾ cup of water, 2 celery stalks, and sugar in a saucepan. Let the mixture simmer over medium heat, then reduce to low heat once bubbles start to appear. After 5 minutes, let it cool and strain. You can keep your celery syrup fit for use for up to a week by putting it in the refrigerator.
Once you add the cucumber to this syrup, you can top up your Gin Mule with the mixture and enjoy a refreshing drink.
Peach and Gin Mule
If you want to try a more fruity flavor for your Gin Mule, you can replace the lime juice with peach juice. This will bring a sweet, acidic tang to the flavor of the drink.
Gooseberry Gin Mule
This is one variation that brings a lot of variety and fun. Gooseberries add an amazing sharp tang to the flavors and successfully complement the ginger flavor. When paired with muddled mint, the result is a refreshing drink perfect for that hot summer day.
How to Serve Your Gin Mule
The best way to serve your Gin Mule is on the rocks. This helps to chill your drink, making it all the more enjoyable. As for where to serve it, you can use a highball glass, Collins glass, or, in true Mule cocktail fashion, a copper mug . Copper mugs keep the drink chilled for longer without affecting its flavor.
Benefits of Drinking Gin Mules
Apart from keeping you cool during the hot months, a glass of Gin Mule also comes loaded with other benefits if you drink in moderation. Here are some of them:
- The main ingredient used in making gin is juniper berries . These are high in nutrients and contain both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The berries can boost immune function by fighting off illnesses such as heart disease. They also have antiseptic properties, which can help relieve lung congestion and coughs.
- Herbs used during gin production can be beneficial for individuals with digestion issues. They promote the secretion of digestive enzymes and stomach acid, both of which help in the breaking down of food. Ginger beer, which is also a main ingredient for the Gin Mule, plays an important role in digestion. Ginger has phenolic compounds that stimulate bile and saliva production, while also relieving gastrointestinal irritation. This helps in smooth digestion and preventing constipation.
A Gin Mule is rich in antioxidants that prevent cellular oxidative damage. In turn, this keeps your skin younger for longer by fighting signs of aging.
Freedom to Create
If you’re enthusiastic about cocktails, the recipes here will come in handy when you want to explore the various types of Mules you can make. As seen with the apple, peach, gooseberries, and celery and cucumber variations, anything from fruits to herbs to vegetables can give you refreshing results. Don’t be afraid to try out new ingredients or ways of making your drink. After all, that’s how Audrey Sanders was able to make what is now a world-renowned cocktail.
