Slips, Trips, and Falls: Preventing Workplace Trip Hazards

Slips, Trips, and Falls: Preventing Workplace Trip Hazards

When you think of a workplace accident, you probably think of something dramatic – an explosion or an amputation, for example.

But the second-most common cause of workplace injury is a trip or slip hazard that leads to a fall. And 20-30% of workplace falls result in a moderate or severe injury like deep bruising, broken bones, or concussions.

In fact, according to OSHA, slips, trips, and falls cause nearly 700 workplace fatalities per year – that's 15% of all workplace deaths.

The trouble is that the circumstances that lead to slips and trips tend to be spontaneous and changeable – they don't exist until suddenly they do. That means preventing slips, trips, and falls is an ongoing process that relies heavily on employees being able to recognize related hazards.

What Are OSHA's Trip Hazard Regulations?

OSHA's primary standard for slip, trip, and fall hazards is the General Industry Walking-Working Surface standard (29 CFR 1910 Subpart D, which includes §1910.21-30).

Related Construction Industry standards are scattered throughout §1926, including Subparts C, L, M, and X. However, OSHA's 2017 slip, trip, and fall revisions aligned Construction standards with General Industry wherever possible.

Finally, some specific slip, trip, and fall OSHA regulations ensure a safe exit route from any workplace. After all, the last thing you want during an emergency evacuation is a bottleneck at the exit. These Means of Egress regulations are found under §1910.36-37.

Walking and Working Surfaces

Definitions related to slips, trips, and falls.

The temporary nature of an OSHA tripping hazard makes a clear set of definitions even more critical.

What is a Walking-Working Surface?

When you first see the name of OSHA's main trip and slip hazard, you may wonder what a "walking-working surface" is.

But it's just a surface you walk on…or work on. Walking-working surfaces include floors, aisles, stairs, platforms, and more.

Slips vs. Trips

Slips and trips can lead to falls, but there's a pretty clear distinction between the two.

A slip happens when there's insufficient traction between your foot and the walking-working surface, causing a sudden loss of balance.

A trip happens when your leg or foot comes into contact with a hazard (either an object or an uneven surface) that arrests the movement of your lower body while momentum carries your upper body forward.

What are the Two Types of Falls?

A fall happens when your center of gravity shifts unexpectedly, but for workplace safety purposes, falls are divided into two different categories: same-level falls and elevated falls.

An elevated fall is when someone falls from one level to another, like from a ladder, scaffold, building, or through an opening in the floor.

A same-level fall is when someone falls to the floor they're standing on or against a nearby object or wall.

What are Examples of Slipping and Tripping Hazards?

There are many factors that can contribute to the likelihood of a slip or trip. Many slip or trip hazards are substances or objects that make a walking-working surface dangerous, but footwear and environmental conditions also play a part.

Examples of Slip Hazards

Basically, anything that decreases the amount of friction between your foot and the walking surface increases the risk of slipping.

This includes:

  • Water, ice, snow, mud, grease, oil, food, or other wet products on smooth floors
  • Dust, powders, plastic wrapping, granules, or other dry products that are slippery on smooth floors
  • Freshly waxed surfaces
  • Highly polished surfaces that remain slick when dry (like concrete, marble, or ceramic)
  • Loose or irregular surfaces like gravel or unanchored flooring
  • Sloped walking surfaces without slip- or skid-resistance
  • Muddy terrain
  • Wet or dry leaves, pine needles, or plant debris
  • Shoes with inadequate traction
  • Soles that are wet, muddy, or greasy

As you can see, slip hazards can be found indoors or outdoors.

Workplace Trip Hazard Examples

Officially, OSHA's trip hazard height is a quarter inch. Any change in floor level that is ¼ inch or more constitutes a tripping hazard.

Examples of common tripping hazards include:

  • Uncovered hoses, cables, wires, or cords across walking surfaces
  • Obstacles or clutter on walking surfaces
  • Furniture drawers/door left open
  • Unmarked steps or ramps
  • Damaged or irregular steps
  • Rumpled carpets or mats (or curled edges)
  • Thresholds, gaps, and other irregularities in walking surfaces
  • Speed bumps and curb drops

Other factors can also contribute to the likelihood that you'll trip, including lack of coordination or an obstructed view of the walking surface. Many circumstances can contribute, including:

  • Being under the influence
  • Poor air quality
  • Poor lighting
  • Bulky loads
  • Poor vision

Slips, Trips, and Falls Prevention

Some slip, trip, and fall prevention measures are permanent, including:

  • Adequate lighting
  • Slip-resistant surfaces in high-risk areas
  • Effective drainage, ventilation, and other methods to keep surfaces dry
  • Marking the edges of steps or elevation changes

Other methods for preventing slips, trips, and falls require ongoing participation from workers, including:

  • Proper footwear
  • Safe work practices
  • Frequent cleaning
  • Good housekeeping practices that keep walkways free of clutter
  • Noticing and marking slip or trip hazards

As a result, a lot of slip, trip, and fall prevention relies on the ability of your workforce to recognize slipping and tripping hazards, understand how to mitigate them, and know how to use safe work practices to minimize their risk.

Even though there's no formal OSHA requirement for Slip, Trip, and Fall training, workers need education and regular refreshers in OSHA trip hazards and regulations to accomplish all of this correctly.

One of the easiest and most effective ways to keep your workforce fresh on this topic is to use online courses from an OSHA-authorized training provider like us. We have a Walking and Working Surface course that your employees can take at their own convenience and pace. Get started today!

Trip hazards

Trips occur when your foot strikes or collides with something, causing you to lose your balance. In most situations, individuals trip over obstacles that aren’t visible, such as uneven flooring edges, messy equipment, tools, or cables.

Accidents from trips are among the most common causes of accidents at work! Trip hazards result in thousands of injuries every year. The most common ones are musculoskeletal, cuts, and bruises but more serious conditions can also occur such as fractures or dislocations

You can’t have a safe and healthy work environment if people aren’t able to move around it freely.

Every day, you are tasked with performing tasks that require the use of your legs. Below I’ve listed common trip hazards and how to assess them so they don’t cause injury or accident.

TRIPING HAZARD EXAMPLE

Common trip hazards

  • Cluttered environment and poor housekeeping
  • Scattered tools, material, electrical cables & hose in workplace
  • Lack of illumination
  • Floor surfaces that are uneven or damaged or floor coverings that are unsuitable
  • Obstructed view
  • Failure to use handrails when climbing on the stairs

Safety Controls for trip hazards:

The incidence of trips in the workplace can be dramatically reduced by implementing policies to regulate behavior. Time pressures on employees who are completing tasks might cause them to rush through work or not pay attention which could lead them into dangerous situations if they do not know what precautions need to be taken when it comes down to hazards like poor housekeeping for example.

The most common type of walking hazard is the slip or trip. This can be prevented by making sure that employees have been trained on how to avoid these dangers. With the proper education, you can avoid trip hazards and reduce your risk of injury or accident. When workers are given training on trip hazards it can help them be more aware of the risks involved, as well as prevent injuries.

Housekeeping:

Housekeeping is the first step towards preventing trip hazards. Maintaining good house- Keeping includes material & waste management to keep your workplace safe for everyone

  • Housekeeping and maintenance should be handled by dedicated workers, if necessary.
  • At the workplace, sufficient trash containers in various locations must be provided with a distinct color code system for all trash containers.
  • All workplaces must maintain the greatest possible degree of cleanliness in order to ensure a safe working environment and prevent incidents. In addition, Good housekeeping contribute to safe working conditions, while poor housekeeping is one of the most common causes of accidents.
  • Before beginning a task, before ending shifts, and after finishing a job, the workplace should be clean. This must be noted and clearly defined on the Work Permit..
  • Housekeeping should be given adequate time to ensure that the premises are well maintained.

Material & cable Management:

  • Materials must be stacked or kept in a secure way that prevents sliding, falling, or collapse.
  • Provide separate storage areas apart from working places
  • Hoses, ropes, and electric cables should be arranged & should never be allowed to remain on walkways.
  • Providing electrical outlets at worksite will help avoid risk of tripping over wires.
  • Place equipment closet and electrical outlets where possible
  • Avoid the use of extension cables if possible. Instead, use retractable reel that can be wrapped up when not in use and takes up less space.
  • When trailing cables is used temporarily, it is important that they be properly secured. hang power cords over work areas rather than on floor, Use cable ties or hangers.

Illumination:

Poor illumination in the workplace is associated with an increase in accidents. Use proper lighting for walkways, stairs, and ramps to reduce accidents at workplaces where there’s no light source available such as basements or work in the nighttime; keep your space well lit by turns on before entering any dimly-lit rooms so you can see what surrounds you easily without bumping into anything while walking around aimlessly!

Walking Surfaces:

Floor surfaces that are uneven or damaged can present a trip hazard. Floors must be kept clean at all times. Stairways, gangways, passageways, and doorways should all be free of obstructions. Floor coverings with an improper safety measurement could also be dangerous, Damaged surfaces/floors are reported for rectification. Safety precautions should also be taken when covering them. A trip can happen at any time so take extra care!

Stairs / Ladder:

Handrails are important when climbing or descending stairs. Make sure that the Ladder you are using often has been inspected! Damaged rungs also lead directly towards trips. stairs should be kept clean and tidy.

Trip Hazard Sign:

Trip Hazard Sign is a cautionary signal to protect from potential trip hazards. It does not substitute for maintaining personal safety, but instead helps communicate that there are things close by which can cause injury or accident if you weren’t careful enough with what you’re doing!

TRIP HAZARD SIGN

Olaf Scholz Is on a Telltale China Trip

Europe is flexing its muscles with china—but may soon learn if germany is really on board..

  • Foreign & Public Diplomacy

After years of speaking softly and carrying a small stick, the European Union has begun flexing its economic muscles with China, concerned that an influx of cheap Chinese products could kill off homegrown industries. The big question is whether Germany, the bloc’s biggest economy, is fully on board with the more assertive approach.

This is what makes German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s trip to China next week especially interesting. Berlin’s policy toward Beijing has hardened in recent years. Last July, Scholz’s government came out with a toughly worded China strategy that shifted the focus to de-risking, diversification, and a reduction of dependencies on China.

But the strategy might never have been published in the first place if it had been up to Scholz alone. The driving force behind the new critical approach has been one of Scholz’s coalition partners, the Greens. Scholz himself remains cautious, reluctant to push China too hard, in part due to fears that Beijing could retaliate against the handful of large German companies that have tied their futures to the Chinese market.

In one of his longest bilateral visits  since taking office in 2021, Scholz will spend three full days in China from April 14 to 16, visiting German companies in Chongqing and Shanghai, before heading to Beijing for meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. Both sides will be keen to stress areas of cooperation.

Scholz, under pressure at home due to a weakening German economy and a Ukraine policy that has satisfied neither the hawks nor the doves, is keen to avoid opening up new fronts with Beijing in a year that could end with a shock to trans-Atlantic relations from the reelection of Donald Trump in the United States. Xi will want to send a signal that China and Germany remain committed to working with each other at a time when the Chinese economy is under mounting pressure from a property crisis, COVID restrictions hangover, and U.S. technology restrictions.

But lurking just below the surface are a range of divisive issues that will be difficult for the two leaders to contain.

High on the German agenda will be China’s support for the Russian war machine in Ukraine, as concerns mount that Beijing is crossing the West’s red lines and providing Moscow with goods and technical assistance that are essential to its military campaign.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned , during a visit to China last week, that Chinese companies that provided material support for Russia’s war would face “significant consequences” in the form of sanctions. Expect Scholz to deliver a similar message in more dulcet tones.

But perhaps the most important topic on the agenda will be the worsening trade relationship between the EU and China. In Brussels, fears are growing that China could try to export its way out of its economic malaise by flooding the European market with cheap, subsidized goods. At the same time, European countries are debating how far to go in restricting the export of sensitive technologies to China amid mounting pressure from Washington.

Last June, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled an economic security strategy that aimed to define red lines for technological cooperation with China. A few months later, the commission launched a high-stakes investigation into imports of electric vehicles from China. And in recent weeks, it has announced subsidy probes tied to wind turbines, solar panels, and trains, accusing Chinese firms of gaining an unfair advantage in the European market thanks to the generous state support they receive at home.

Together, it amounts to the most forceful pushback against China that we have ever seen from Europe—and it is just the beginning.

In an important speech at Princeton University this week, Margrethe Vestager, the European commissioner in charge of competition issues, highlighted the new measures but admitted that Europe’s “whack-a-mole” tactics may not be sufficient.

“We need more than a case-by-case approach. We need a systematic approach. And we need it before it is too late,” she said. “We can’t afford to see what happened on solar panels, happening again on electric vehicles, wind, or essential chips.”

Vestager proposed the development of “trustworthiness” criteria for critical clean technologies—an echo of the approach taken to “high-risk” 5G suppliers such as Huawei. Countries that did not meet European standards in areas such as cybersecurity, data security, labor rights, and environmental standards would find their companies restricted or excluded from the market. This would mean a momentous change in Europe’s economic relationship with China.

But for it to work, support from Germany will be essential. And it is unclear whether Scholz is prepared to put Germany’s privileged economic relationship with China—even if it is increasingly under strain—at risk. He will travel to China with a delegation of leaders of German industry, including the CEOs of the three big carmakers—BMW, Mercedes, and Volkswagen—that have been doubling down on the Chinese market in recent years. According to Rhodium Group figures , German direct investments in China hit a record 7.1 billion euros in 2022, a whopping 79 percent of the EU total.

In the weeks before his first visit to China as chancellor, in November 2022, Scholz rammed through a deal giving Chinese shipping giant Cosco a stake in one of the terminals in the Hamburg port, Germany’s biggest. He has also resisted pressure from his coalition partners to take a decision on phasing Huawei out of the German telecommunications network. The Chinese group has a 59 percent share of the 5G network in Germany, one of the highest levels in Europe.

Against this backdrop, European Commission officials will be watching the messages Scholz sends in China closely. Will he explain to his Chinese hosts the seriousness of Europe’s concerns about the trade relationship and signal that the EU will respond? This would show that Germany and its partners are prepared to use their economic leverage at a time when the Chinese economy is struggling and leaders in Beijing are desperate to attract European investment and retain access to the European market.

Or will Scholz play down trade tensions, as German businesses are urging him to do, and undermine Brussels in the process?

The answer will say a lot about how united Europe is on China in a crucial year, culminating in a momentous U.S. presidential election in November. Weeks after the Scholz visit, Xi will make his first trip to Europe in five years , passing through France, Hungary, and Serbia. If Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron deliver the same message to Xi, it would send a powerful signal. If they fail to do so, it would be fatal.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Germany's Scholz kicks off China trip amid tensions over EVs, Russia

By Andreas Rinke and Sarah Marsh

CHONGQING/BERLIN (Reuters) - Chancellor Olaf Scholz kicked off a three-day tour of China on Sunday to shore up ties with Germany's top trade partner and address rifts over issues including Chinese trade practices and its support for Russia.

The chancellor's longest visit to any state since taking office is likely to be overshadowed by Iran's attack on Israel, and it is also being watched for how much Germany backs the European Union's probe into Chinese state subsidies for electric vehicle makers, which has emerged as a contentious issue.

Scholz, who is travelling with several German CEOs, started his trip in the southwestern megacity of Chongqing. He will also go to Shanghai and Beijing where he is set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.

Upon arrival, Scholz condemned the Iranian strikes on Israel "in the strongest possible terms," his spokesperson said. Scholz was kept informed of developments in the Middle East on the flight, government sources said.

German officials said Beijing could play a positive role in cooling the rapidly escalating tensions in the Middle East.

China played a mediating role between Iran and Saudi Arabia last year, and Reuters reported China had asked Iran to help rein in attacks on ships in the Red Sea by the Iran-backed Houthis, or risk harming business relations with Beijing.

Still, Berlin's overall stance on China has become more critical since the war in Ukraine.

Last year, Germany also published its first China strategy, describing "unfair practices" and the risks to supply chains in a potential conflict over Taiwan, and urging "de-risking". However, efforts to diversify away from China are so far patchy.

On Sunday, Scholz will visit German auto supplier Bosch's hydrogen fuel cell plant in Chongqing, putting in the spotlight on an area of rising tensions.

The EU is carrying out several probes into whether Chinese green tech exports like battery EVs that it says have benefited from state subsidies and which could harm local producers.

Germany's car industry fears these probes could lead to a trade war that could damage their prospects in the world's biggest car market.

Scholz is also expected to address China's support for Russia. German officials on Friday bluntly said Beijing's support and exports to Russia were enabling Moscow to wage a war of aggression in Ukraine and causing a "growing loss of reputation for China" in Europe and beyond.

"It is about China not supporting Russia in waging a brutal war against its neighbor Ukraine," Scholz wrote in a post on social media platform X on Saturday.

Germany's Scholz trip to China overshadowed by Iran attack on Israel

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz began a three-day visit to China on Sunday, overshadowed by Iran's unprecedented air attack on Israel.

Scholz learned of Tehran's massive drone and missile attack during his overnight flight to the Chinese metropolis of Chongqing, which is home to some 32 million inhabitants.

Upon landing, Scholz immediately condemned the attack "in the strongest possible terms," in comments on his behalf by government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit.

Later, Scholz said it was an "an absolutely unjustifiable attack, it is a serious escalation of the situation."

"All we can do is warn everyone, especially Iran, against continuing like this," he said, reiterating Germany's solidarity with Israel and the country's right to defend itself since the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7 last year.

During the flight, Scholz was constantly updated about the escalation in the Middle East. The delegation was also in close contact with the German security authorities. No phone calls took place with allies from the aircraft, however.

A video conference with G7 leaders has been convened for the evening, to coordinate their response to the attack. An IT expert is accompanying the chancellor on his trip, to ensure communications from China are secure against interception.

The retaliatory strike had been expected for days, following a suspected Israeli-led airstrike on the Iranian embassy compound in the Syrian capital Damascus. Despite indications that it could occur this weekend, Scholz decided to go ahead with his trip to China.

The chancellor stuck largely to his original programme with a planned visit to a Bosch hydrogen drive production facility, accompanied by a high-profile business delegation.

A planned talk to students about urban planning remained on the agenda, as did a meeting of German and Chinese researchers on the subject of water quality and a meeting with regional Communist Party Secretary Yuan Jiajun.

Sightseeing was struck off the agenda, however, meaning Scholz did not take a planned boat trip on the Yangtze River or a city tour.

On Monday, Scholz's visit is expected to continue on to the economic and financial centre of Shanghai. On Tuesday he is due in Beijing for political talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.

These two appointments alone - for which the Chinese leadership had cleared several hours - ruled out a cancellation of the trip.

The talks could even be helpful given the new escalation to the conflict in the Middle East, where China had kept a low profile until now.

On Sunday, however, Beijing expressed "deep concern." In a statement, the Foreign Ministry called on all sides to "exercise calm and restraint to prevent a further increase in tensions."

Scholz is also expected to discuss the conflict in Ukraine when he meets with Xi, who is considered one of the closest allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Meanwhile, the trip is considered a key test of Germany's new "de-risking" strategy towards China, agreed by Scholz's coalition government last year.

The aim is to reduce economic dependencies on China, after Germany learned lessons from its energy reliance on Russia when Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. China remains Germany's second-largest trading partner, however.

The German chancellor is accompanied by a dozen top managers. Among them are the chief executives of the car manufacturers Mercedes-Benz and BMW as well as the chemical company BASF.

In Beijing, Scholz is also expected to be accompanied by Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir, Transport Minister Volker Wissing and Environment Minister Steffi Lemke.

This is Scholz's second trip to China since taking office in December 2021. His inaugural visit in November 2022 was only a day trip due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. This time, he is taking three days - more than ever before for a single country on one trip.

Beijing expects the visit to "inject new momentum" into the bilateral relationship, according to Chinese state news agency Xinhua, considered to be a Communist Party mouthpiece.

Scholz Warns Iran as Attacks on Israel Overshadow China Trip

CHONGQING/BERLIN (Reuters) -Chancellor Olaf Scholz warned Iran against further attacks on Israel on Sunday as the escalating conflict in the Middle East overshadowed the start of his three-day tour of China.

Scholz is visiting the southwestern town of Chongqing as well as Shanghai and Beijing as part of a visit to shore up ties with Germany's top trade partner while addressing growing rifts over issues including Chinese trade practices and its support for Russia.

But Iran's attack on Israel looks set to redefine the agenda and tone of the visit. Scholz will for example participate from his hotel in a video meeting of G7 leaders on Sunday to discuss Iran's attack on Israel, a German delegation source to Reuters.

German officials had also expressed hope before the trip that Beijing could play a positive role in cooling the growing tensions in the Middle East, despite their critical assessment of its support for Russia in its invasion of Ukraine.

China played a mediating role between Iran and Saudi Arabia last year, and Reuters reported China had asked Iran to help rein in attacks on ships in the Red Sea by the Iran-backed Houthis, or risk harming business relations with Beijing.

Scholz, who is traveling with several German CEOs, is set on Tuesday to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.

"We will do everything to stop a further escalation," Scholz told reporters. "We can only warn everyone, especially Iran, against continuing this way."

Upon arrival, Scholz had condemned the Iranian strikes on Israel "in the strongest possible terms," his spokesperson said. Scholz was kept informed of developments in the Middle East on the flight, government sources said.

The chancellor earlier on Sunday visited German auto supplier Bosch's hydrogen fuel cell plant in Chongqing, putting in the spotlight on an area of rising tensions.

The EU is carrying out several probes into whether Chinese green tech exports like battery EVs that it says have benefited from state subsidies and which could harm local producers.

Germany's car industry fears these probes could lead to a trade war that could damage their prospects in the world's biggest car market. Scholz's visit is being watched for signs of how much Germany backs the EU probe and is willing to go against the wishes of a key national industry.

Scholz said on Sunday the plant showed the importance of cooperation to tackle big challenges facing the world like climate change.

Berlin's overall stance on China has become more critical since the war in Ukraine.

Last year, Germany also published its first China strategy, describing "unfair practices" and the risks to supply chains in a potential conflict over Taiwan, and urging "de-risking". However, efforts to diversify away from China are so far patchy.

During his visit, Scholz is also expected to address China's support for Russia.
