Apart from excavations dating back to the Stone Age (7000 B.C.!), it has numerous archaeological sites and historical places to see, from Roman ruins to famous mosques. But it’s not all about history – you’ll also find many modern neighborhoods full of colorful markets, delicious food, and stunning art. Spend a day or two exploring the capital before touring elsewhere. Here are all the best things to do in Amman, Jordan .

Things to do in Amman, Jordan

Amman is more than just a place to use as a base for other things to do in Jordan. It’s a lively city with lots going on, though it never feels too chaotic. With bustling markets, shopping streets, cafes, and lots of street art in between, it makes a great starting point for your 7-day Jordan itinerary. Spend a day or two discovering famous historical sites, exploring the many art galleries, and trying out the country’s well-known falafel.

1. The Duke’s Diwan

Perhaps one of the most unique things to do in Amman, Jordan, is take a peek into the Duke of Mukhaybeh’s house. This historic building is regarded as one of the oldest houses in Amman, offering a glimpse into the past. It is located in the heart of the city. As you explore the city, take a few minutes to roam around in the rooms decorated with antique furnishings, beautiful ornaments, and artwork.

Enter through a small door on the main street and make your way up the staircase. Once upstairs, you’ll walk into a very traditional, well-preserved home. It’s said that it was initially used as a post office, later becoming the Ministry of Finance and a hotel. Now, it belongs to the Duke, who you’ll sometimes find on-site.

Note: The house museum is free to visit, and all the rooms are easily explored within 15 minutes.

2. Amman Citadel, Umayyad Palace

Amman is sprawled up and across over twenty hills, creating waves of beautiful cubed buildings. Atop one of the highest hills lies Amman’s Citadel, overlooking the entire city and Roman theater.

The view alone makes it a stunning place to visit. However, it is also home to several archaeological remnants, dating back as far as the Bronze Age (1800 B.C.). Wander around the open-air site, taking in the remains of the empires that ruled here, from the Assyrians, Greeks, and Babylonians to the Romans. 

One of the most interesting remains is the blue-domed Umayyad gateway, the entrance to the Umayyad Palace. This building was the site of power for the first Muslim dynasty that ruled Jordan from the 7th century.

Getting there: From the Roman Theater, a set of stairs ( here’s the location ) leads up to the Citadel. Walk up through an old neighborhood, and you’ll eventually reach a road to the site entrance. You’ll find signs along the way, and the walk takes about 20 minutes. Alternatively, arrange a taxi to take you up the hill. 

Opening Times & Entrance Fee: The Citadel is open from 8 AM daily but closes at different hours depending on the season ( check opening times here ). Entrance costs 3JD (4,23 USD) for foreigners.

3. Roman Theater

Though expected in Europe , many Roman remains are found far beyond the continent’s borders. The Roman Theater, nestled in the heart of Amman, stands as a testament to this far-reaching influence of the Roman Empire. Back then, the city was known as Philadelphia. Now, the semi-circular marvel stands as it did nearly two millennia ago, making it a must-do in Amman, Jordan. 

As you explore its well-preserved steps and soak up the atmosphere, you’ll be transported back to a time of Roman entertainment. The construction boasts a capacity to host about 6,000 spectators for grand theater performances and spectacles. Climb all the way to the top for panoramic views over the site, as well as the beautiful surrounding buildings. 

Entrance to the Roman Theater in Amman is included in the Jordan Pass , including its two small museums. Without the pass, entry is 2JD (2.83 USD).

4. Soak up the (Street) Art

Weave your way through the narrow alleys that move up and down the hills of Amman, soaking up the different sights as you go. During your stroll, you’ll quickly notice that besides its uniform-hued buildings, some pop out in various colors.

These beautiful contemporary murals sometimes rise several stories high, giving the ancient city a more modern feel. You’ll spot many as you walk around Amman; however, the most interesting pieces are found in neighborhoods further away from downtown.

With lots of bars, cafes, and restaurants, the lively area of Rainbow Street is quite possibly Amman’s most famous street. It’s known as a place where tourists and locals come to mingle or go for a night out, making it the perfect place if you’re looking for nightlife and entertainment. 

However, the kilometer-long street also houses some great food spots decorated with colorful lights, picturesque decors, and unique ornaments. Its central location intersects with some of the best things to do in Amman, allowing you to hop into the quieter side alleys for some delicious falafel or beautiful artwork. 

Food tip: Visit Sufra for lunch or dinner, with many yummy mezze (bites) to choose from.

6. King Abdullah Mosque (Blue Mosque)

Unlike other mosques, the King Abdullah Mosque welcomes tourists to take a look inside its beautiful building. With an impressive sky-blue dome that towers over the rooftops of Amman, it’s a must-see in the city. Marvel at the carefully crafted shape of the mosque, its colored ceiling, and detailed little windows.

It’s not an ancient historical landmark, as it was completed in 1989 by the late King Hussein in honor of his grandfather. However, it’s a great way to glimpse the largest mosque in Amman and see how the locals practice their religion. Entrance to the blue mosque is timed and costs 2JD, only in cash.

Note: Women must cover their heads, arms, and legs to enter the mosque. You can get a free abaya (scarf) in the gift shop (the entrance). Men are recommended to wear long pants and no hats.

7. Old Signs of Amman Museum

Tucked in the charming streets of Amman, the ‘One Thousand and One Signs Museum’ is where a collection of old shop signs began nearly 40 years ago. It immerses you in the city’s history, boasting a stunning collection of vintage signs, each telling a story of Amman’s evolution. 

The purpose of this museum is to preserve an important part of Amman’s history, with the first sign dating back to 1986.

It’s a great place to take some photos because of its vintage vibe and cute photo booth. Run on a voluntary non-profit basis, the museum is free to enter and open Saturday through Thursday from 10 AM to 5 PM (closed on Fridays). 

8. Cooking Class: Beit Sitti

No matter where you are in the world, whether it’s Paris or Costa Rica , there’s probably an option to try delicious Middle Eastern cuisine. However, the very best is undoubtedly found in the region itself. Embark on a culinary adventure in Amman, Jordan, by joining a cooking class that delves into the rich gastronomy. 

Under the expert guidance of local chefs, you’ll knead the dough for fluffy falafels, savor freshly ground spices, and master the art of crafting delicious dishes like mansaf or maqluba. One of the best places to follow a class is at Beit Sitti, which translates to ‘Grandmother’s House’ and lies in one of Amman’s oldest neighborhoods.

The Jordan Museum in Amman is a window into the country’s storied past, full of interesting archaeological treasures. Marvel at the inspiring Dead Sea Scrolls, explore the intricate exhibits of ancient artifacts, and gaze at the well-preserved remnants of Petra , one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

10. Visit the Markets

Get lost in the Souks of Amman, where towers of local fruit stand tall next to one another, and the smell of fresh daily bread, coffee, tobacco, and sugary snacks flows through the narrow alleys. Visiting the vibrant local markets is one of the best things to do in Jordan . Nothing tops wandering through the bustling streets, taking in all the colors, noises and smells. 

Two of our favorites are Souk Jara and the Sugar Market (Souk Al-Sukar), full of delicious food and drink options and lots of unique artwork. Dip in and out of the daily market to soak up the atmosphere, grab some pictures, and try some new local foods. Some stalls are open from early in the morning, but most open around 10 or 11 AM till 10 PM. Make sure to stop here for some fresh juice as you browse the interconnected souks.

Conveniently located only 50 minutes from the historic center, Queen Alia International Airport is the main airport in Jordan and has many connecting flights with its surroundings, including Europe . 

Though many visitors often skip the capital city, it has a cool vibe worth exploring. The easiest way to get downtown is by taxi, which takes approximately 30 – 45 minutes. Expect to spend about 15JD (22 USD) for the journey. Alternatively, there are also shuttle buses that depart for the city about every half hour.

The labyrinth of alleys and busy streets in Amman, Jordan, are best to explore on foot. Make your way past colorful neighborhoods, gradually climbing one of the city’s many hills. Up top, look out over the sea of cubed houses and stunning historic buildings. Another option to get around town is to arrange a taxi.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Jordan is during the spring and fall months. The weather is pleasantly mild during this time, with daytime temperatures between 20 and 30 °C. Because of this, it’s a great time to explore the beautiful red outdoors and cities without the desert heat of summer.

Summers in Amman can be very hot, with temperatures often exceeding 35 °C, making traveling in the desert quite challenging. Winters can be cold and rainy, closing many outdoor activities.

While Petra is more than worth a visit on your next trip to Jordan, you shouldn't look past the treasures on offer in the country's underrated capital Amman. From ancient Roman architecture, to bustling markets, adventurous things , and one of the world's most interesting falafel sandwiches, Amman is more than just a crash pad for the rest of Jordan.

Look Out on the City—and Back in Time

One thing many would-be visitors to Jordan might not realize is that while the country is currently under the rule of the Arab Hashemite royal family, it was once a busy metropolis in the Roman Far East. Evidence of this can be seen not only at the Amman Citadel, whose hilltop location allows you to enjoy a very good view of the city (but not the very best—more on that later), but at sites throughout the city such as the Roman Theatre and Temple of Hercules.

Like many places throughout the Middle East and North Africa, Amman is home to many open-air markets, where you can shop for all sorts of goods, from local spices and textiles to ordinary electronics and household items. Regardless of what shopping centers you visit such as Al-Balad Market, Souk Jarah and Bukhariyeh Market, be prepared to haggle for the best price, since prices here are almost never fixed.

Jordanian food, like that you find throughout the Levant region, is comprised of items that are claimed by many and owned by none—delightful falafel , deep-fried balls of chickpea flour, is a key example. One Amman establishment that makes a falafel sandwich all its own is Al-Quds on Amman's trendy Rainbow Street, where you can get a version of the popular sandwich served on a pressed french baguette.

Speaking of Rainbow Street, it is indeed one of the coolest places in central Amman, and has become popular not only among tourists, but the young, hip crowd of Amman locals. From coffee shops like Books@cafe to a smattering of cute boutiques, smokey shisha joints and eateries that are just as delicious as the aforementioned Al-Quds, Rainbow Street is certainly one of Amman's most colorful locales.

Much of Amman is comprised of one- or two-story buildings, with the in-development Al-Abdali business district a notable exception. The skyscrapers you find here are neither as tall nor as numerous as those you find in regional cities like Tel Aviv and Cairo, and many are plagued by construction delays that can seem to go on forever. However, seeing sleek edifices such as Amman Rotana Hotel rises above Amman's dusty cityscape creates an aesthetic that's difficult to find most other places on the planet.

Jordan is known as being a relatively moderate Muslim country, but the vast majority of Jordanians remain faithful observers of the religion. One of the most beautiful manifestations of their faith is the mosques you find throughout Amman. Not only can you get a 360-degree view of Amman's cityscape, but on clear days you can see the valley of the River Jordan. Interestingly, Mount Nebo is mentioned in the Bible, which like Jordan's Roman heritage shows that this modern Muslim city has an incredibly rich, diverse history.

Take Amman Day Trips—And Not Just to Petra

As wonderful as Petra is, adventurous things to do in Jordan transcend it . The historical city of Jerash, just north of Amman, takes you back about 2,000 years to the time of the early Christian Roman Empire. You can alternatively head to the Jordan River, though it won't cool you off unless you plan to be baptized. For that, you should head to the shores of the Dead Sea or the port of  Aqaba , where some of the Red Sea's best scuba diving can be found. Scenic Wadi Rum, meanwhile, will make you feel like you're in "Lawrence of Arabia" — if you can take the heat.

The temple was dedicated to Hercules, the famous Greco-Roman God who was revered by many in the ancient era. The tall pillars that once formed the entrance still stand, but much of the rest of the temple has fallen into ruin, including the monolithic statue of Hercules.

3. Visit the Jordan Archaeological Museum 

One of the best things to do in Amman Jordan is to visit the excellent Jordan Archeological Museum, which is the centerpiece of the Citadel. 

The museum dates back to 1951 and has for decades housed many of the most important archaeological discoveries which have been unearthed from across the country. 

The depth of the finds on display here is astounding and you can see exhibits from the Prehistoric through to the ancient and then medieval eras.

4. Wander the Jordan Museum

History lovers won’t want to miss out on a trip to the Jordan Museum either, a much newer museum which only opened its doors to the public in 2016. 

The Jordan Museum was built specifically to house the wealth of archaeological finds being discovered across the country that couldn’t fit into the much smaller Jordan Archeological Museum.

It’s the largest museum and one of the best things to do in Amman Jordan, holding such vital exhibits as the Dead Sea Scrolls.

These ancient Jewish texts – and the ‘Ain Ghazal Statues – are thought to be the world’s oldest human statues –  all of which are thousands of years old.

5. Climb the Roman Theatre

One of the most iconic places to visit in the Jordanian capital is the ancient Roman Theatre.

This famed sight is one of the oldest tourist attractions in Amman and can trace its origins back to around 100 AD, making it almost 2000 years old.

The impressive theatre is very much still standing after all those years and is used to host extravagant music concerts and cultural performances.

The stadium was designed to hold 6000 people, and considering its age it is a remarkable work of ancient engineering.

6. See the Odeon

As impressive as the huge Roman Theatre is, nearby you can also visit the much smaller, yet equally astounding Odeon.

The Odeon is a much more intimate theatre, a theatre that was designed to hold only 500 people, rather than thousands. The Odeon also dates back to the Roman era and it continues to hold small concerts today.

7. See the Roman Ruins of Nymphaeum

The capital is a treasure trove of Roman ruins, many of which have been restored in recent years.

One of the best things to do in Amman Jordan is to visit the ancient Nymphaeum, which is one of the most intriguing of those restored Roman ruins.

The Nymphaeum is an old Roman fountain, which at its height held a huge amount of rainwater.

8. Stroll Along the Hashemite Plaza

Hashemite Plaza is both the ancient and modern center of the capital, and a visit here is one of the best things to do in Amman Jordan.

Hashemite Plaza is the heart of Amman’s historic Downtown, the same area where you can find the Roman theatres and fountains, all overlooked by the imposing figure of the Amman Citadel. 

Hashemite Plaza was much restored alongside the theatres and other ruins too and was officially reopened in 2014, being named after the country’s Hashemite Royal Family.

9. Visit the Jordan Folklore Museum 

Another interesting museum, and one of the best things to do in Amman Jordan, is the Jordan Folklore Museum.

Again found in the center of Amman’s Downtown, the Jordan Folklore Museum has a central place next to the huge Roman Theatre, on the edge of Hashemite Plaza. 

Despite its ancient location, the Jordan Folklore Museum actually has a focus on more modern aspects of Jordanian life.

It offers an insight into the culture and history of the Bedouin and Arabic tribes through the 19th and 20th centuries that would go on to create the country of Jordan that you have today.

There are some great exhibits, mostly depicting what desert life was like for the nomadic groups that wandered through Jordan.

10. Check Out the Royal Automobile Museum

If you’re more interested in the modern rather than the ancient, then one of the best things to do in Amman Jordan is to visit the Royal Automobile Museum.

The excellent museum is home to an eccentric collection of cars that have been owned by the Hashemite Royal Family over the years. 

You don’t need to be a car connoisseur to appreciate the Royal Automobile Museum, because the cars also help to show a unique side of the country’s royal family and their intertwined histories. 

11. Visit the King Abdullah Mosque 

To learn more about religious life in the capital, then one of the best things to do in Amman Jordan is to call into the famed King Abdullah Mosque.

The mosque is named for King Abdullah, who helped to overthrow the Ottoman Empire in World War I before establishing the Hashemite family as rulers of Jordan. 

Tourists are welcome to visit and can visit the museum that’s found inside. Make sure you visit outside of prayer time though and dress respectably in long sleeves and trousers.

12. Spend Time in the National Gallery of Fine Arts

14. Learn the Legends at the Cave of the Seven Sleepers

On the outskirts of Amman, you can find the fascinating Cave of the Seven Sleepers. This unique cave is steeped in legend and is said to be where persecuted Christians fled to escape the Romans.

You can find the ruins of churches and mosques, as well as ancient graveyards by the caves. Not too many people visit the Cave of the Seven Sleepers, but for history lovers, it’s a must.

15. Take a Day Trip to Mount Nebo

If you’re looking to escape the city then take a trip into the nearby mountains, where you can visit Mount Nebo. 

The mountain is important in biblical stories because it’s here that Moses supposedly saw the Promised Land.

From its summit, at 800 meters in height, you can see all along the Jordan Valley, and right into Israel and Palestine. The views are incredible, as is the history of Mount Nebo too.

Jordanians like their tea and their art, so the peaceful hideaway of Fann Wa Chai cafe in the hip, bohemian Jabal Al Weibdeh district is naturally a popular hangout. Cleverly combining the two, visitors can expect to be serenaded with classical music as they study the art-lined walls, or sit and sip on the wide range of teas served in delightfully quaint china teacups. If you’re hungry, peruse the small but perfectly formed menu – they do generously filled sandwiches and plenty of sweet treats.

6. Fann Wa Chai gallery

Now a local institution, the Fann Wa Chai gallery burst onto the art scene in 1988, with the intention to support the arts and artists of Jordan and the Arab world. More than three decades on, it has evolved into an oasis for the art world, overlooking the bustling downtown area of the old city of Amman. This hub is an epicentre for culture and the impressive architecture makes a fine backdrop for exhibitions of paintings, while the gardens are open to all.

7. Grand Husseini Mosque

In the midst of all the urban hyperactivity is the compact but impressive Grand Husseini Mosque. It was last renovated in 1987, but still looks remarkably fresh, considering that as many as 1,500 worshippers crowd in every Friday for Dhuhr (noon) prayer – a breathtaking sight. Immersed at the heart of several busy souqs, it is possible to visit. Hang around until prayers are over, when respectfully dressed non-Muslims are sometimes admitted – just ask at the gate.

8. Amman Citadel

Amman Citadel dates back to the Bronze Age; over the course of a near-4,000-year history, it’s been occupied by the Byzantines, Persians, Romans and Greeks. This makes it the cultural heart of the city: a rich convergence of architectural wonders. The most iconic fixture is the ruined Temple of Hercules, built during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161-180 CE); the giant stone hand there is a reminder of Ancient Rome’s pristine craftsmanship. Also visit Umayyad Palace – an eighth-century royal complex with a restored, domed entrance chamber – and the Jordan Archaeological Museum, which houses 6,000-year-old statues and one of the legendary Dead Sea Scrolls.

9. Habibah Downtown

You will probably have to join the queue of locals if you want to try what is arguably the best kunafa in town. Since 1947, Habibah Sweets, on Al Hashemi Road, has been producing the cheese pastry drenched in sweet syrup and pistachios, with people still simply unable to get enough of it. Best eaten outside the premises immediately, if the idea of thick, gooey cheese does nothing for you, choose from a wide range of homemade treats including cakes, cookies, ice cream and cheesecakes.

10. Beit Sitti Cookery School

Beit Sitti translates literally as grandmother’s house and the cookery school pays homage to a much-loved granny – it was founded by three sisters who wanted to create a tribute and share their passion for home-cooked food. The practical classes provide students with the opportunity to create a real taste of Jordan. Each session is led by local women who teach you how to work magic with aromatic spices to create a selection of authentic regional dishes, which you then sit down to polish off with the rest of the group.

Overall it was an incredible and memorable trip. What's not to love about Petra?! The other tour group members made it a lot of fun and the pace of the trip more tolerable. There was a lot of what felt like hurry-up-and-wait when visiting the ruins, especially with how much there was to cover on Day 2 - Madaba, Mt. Nebo, Kerak Castle, then (hauling butt to make it in time) to Petra by Candlelight. I suppose that's the nature of the beast when traveling with a large group but it could have been managed better, like encourage people to take pictures of things while you're explaining what we're looking at instead of standing around for lengths of time in one spot listening, then a mad rush to get 22 people's selfies and all the angles, then run to the next spot to stand around and then do the same thing. The 3-star hotel option for the first and last night exceeded expectations - Amman Guest House. A nice touch with 4 (included) water bottles in the room, spacious feel, nice towels, great breakfast. Very helpful front desk staff. The Petra hotel (can't remember the name) should not even be considered 1 star and I would recommend to the tour group agency who seems to have these details otherwise worked out not to work with them anymore. The lobby area is nice enough, and that's it. We were placed on the 4th floor, which meant crossing a terrace and dining room, into a hall and up a flight of stairs, with our luggage and no help offered from the front desk although I did see a porter around. The beds were tiny. I am in shape and not a large person by any means and I had to sit "side-saddle" on the toilet to fit on the toilet without the shower glass door pressing into my leg. Everyone was disappointed in the breakfast. Finally, the "bartender," though there's no alcohol served in the "bar" so not sure you can call it, was rude and will be more than happy to demand money for the juice he serves you under the guise of it being red wine. Heads up: there's no alcohol in Petra so even though you'll be rushed through the streets of Madaba earlier in the day just to gather and stand around the bus waiting for everyone to go to the bathroom and take pics, do yourself a favor and stop and buy wine there! It is a grape-growing region known for its wine and people were selling it in the shops even in the morning but we were hustled past there so fast we didn't think there was time. You have the time, take advantage of it. The Bedouin camp was nice. Great experience with the zarb and hanging by the fire drinking coffee and tea and looking up at the blanket of stars! BUT if you're like me and explicitly not interested in "camping" and were relying on the upgrade with en-suite bathroom and not using a public bath house in the middle of the night in the desert, and booked said upgrade and confirmed it via numerous emails prior to the trip only to arrive and find out they'd overbooked the upgrades by 4 rooms and you're going to be in a regular tent after all (except they miraculously pulled some strings to get me an upgrade later in the evening, but not the other 4 couples), then beware of this mishap. I'm thankful they were able to make it work but I couldn't help but feel, as did the others who were downgraded, that this may happen more often than just this one-off time. I feel like the price is right for this kind of trip, just know going into it there are some caveats with a large group tour. If you are easygoing and don't mind the issues I mentioned then definitely go for it. If these kinds of things are enough to ruin an otherwise good time then look into the smaller more intimate groups.
