13 essential tips for the perfect motorcycle ride in tunisia.

A road curving towards a mountain range in a desert landscape.

Riding the amazing roads of Tunisia is something that every adventure rider would surely love. Based on our experience, here are our essential tips for riding a motorcycle in Tunisia.

Here’s a shortcut to what you’ll find in this post.

  • TIP 1: Check the Validity of Your Travel Documents
  • TIP 2: Confirm Your Insurance Covers Tunisia
  • TIP 3: Bringing in Your Own Motorcycle or Renting?
  • TIP 4: Know the Drone Laws in Tunsia
  • TIP 5: Be Careful of What You Bring into Tunisia

  • TIP 9: Get Appropriate Tyres for Riding in the Sand
  • TIP 10: Getting Fuel in Tunisa
  • TIP 11: Obey Traffic Rules and Watch for Camels Crossing
  • TIP 12: Respect the Culture and Bring a Scarf!
  • TIP 13: Enjoy the Amazing Tunisian Roads and Landscape

This post is purely informational and based on our own experiences. We also use affiliate links which help us keep this website running, at no cost to you.

ESSENTIAL TIP 1: CHECK THE VALIDITY OF YOUR TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

The first thing you absolutely must do is to make sure that all your travel documents are valid for the period of your stay, and in accordance with Tunisian laws.

You don’t want to get to the port, all excited, and get turned away!

There are 4 main documents you will need to check before you travel to Tunisia- your passport, visa (if required), motorcycle documents, and your driver’s license.

  • PASSPORT: A validity of at least 6 months from the date of entry into Tunisia.
  • VISA: Check if you will need a visa to enter Tunisia.

Since Pietro is Italian, he didn’t need a visa. I, however, being Nigerian, needed to obtain one. It was a fairly straightforward and short process, so it wasn’t an issue.

  • MOTORCYCLE DOCUMENTS: Ensure all your documents are in order and are with you.
  • DRIVER’S LICENCE: You must have a full driver’s license from your country. An international driver’s license might also help. In our case, we didn’t get one, and our Italian driver’s licenses were accepted.

ESSENTIAL TIP 2: CONFIRM YOUR INSURANCE COVERS TUNISIA

The next tip for riding in Tunisia is to check whether your travel insurance covers riding in Tunisia.

  • TRAVEL INSURANCE: Personal travel insurance that covers you and your passenger (if you have one).
  • MOTORBIKE INSURANCE: If you plan on riding or in Tunisia, you MUST have motorcycle insurance that covers Tunisia. Make sure to confirm with your insurance provider if your insurance covers Tunisia. If it doesn’t, you have two choices. Either get one before you leave or you can get one at the point of arrival.

In our case, we compared costs and found that it would cost us less to get insurance at the port in La Goullette. The insurance cost us the equivalent of 20 Euros.

ESSENTIAL TIP 3: BRINGING IN YOUR OWN MOTORCYCLE OR RENTING?

You need to decide the best option for you; whether to bring your own motorcycle or rent one. Of course, this would depend on where you’re traveling from. If you reside in Europe, you can take the ferry from either Italy or France with your own motorcycle or a rented one.

Renting a motorcycle in Tunisia is also possible. Preferably, rent from Tunis, the capital. You can read some reviews online in order to make a decision on what company to rent from.

If you’ve decided to rent a motorcycle in Tunisia, you would need an A (moto) license for motorcycles with an engine capacity above 150cc. Some rental companies ask for an International Drivers Permit (IDP) and possibly a security deposit (cash or card). Make sure to check the terms of the rental company in order not to get any hidden surprises.

ESSENTIAL TIP 4: DRONE LAWS IN TUNISIA

When we decided to go to Tunisia, we were quite disappointed to learn that the process to obtain a drone permit for Tunisia is so complicated and lengthy, that in the end, it isn’t worth it if you’re only going to be spending a short time there.

Meanwhile, if you try to smuggle it in and you get searched at the point of entry, it will be confiscated and you might never get it back.

Since we couldn’t take our drone, we decided on the next best thing- our Insta360 X3 camera, which takes amazing 360 shots. In addition, using the longest 3m stick gives you a makeshift drone shot.

ESSENTIAL TIP 5: BE CAREFUL OF WHAT YOU BRING INTO TUNISIA

Another essential tip for riding in Tunisia is regarding what to bring with you in your luggage, there are strict rules concerning items that are considered contraband, so you have to be careful not to break them.

While it is possible to bring in items such as cigarettes and alcohol, there is a maximum quantity allowed .

Other things you shouldn’t travel with include any publications that might be considered obscene or immoral.

Also, if you intend to use cameras for professional use, you will need special authorisation.

ESSENTIAL TIP 6: CASH OR CARD?

You can bring in other currencies that do not exceed an equivalent of 25,000 Dinars, the local Tunisian currency.

If you’re wondering the best place to change money, from our experience, we found that changing money at the port gave us the best exchange rate. Besides, since most places deal mostly in cash, it’s a good idea to have some local currency on you before you leave the port.

Since Tunsia isn’t an expensive destination, 300 Euro was sufficient for both of us and included lunch, excursions, fuel, and shopping at the souks.

When it comes to using your card, there are many places where you can use your card to pay for items. ATMs also accept VISA and MAESTRO cards. However, the further you are away from the main cities, the less likely you’ll be able to use your card, so having cash is always a great idea.

ESSENTIAL TIP 7: BUY A SIM CARD FOR CALLS AND INTERNET

Now, this was one are where we were a little stupid. We just assumed that no matter what, the hotels would have good wifi and we could make calls or go on the internet whenever we were back at the hotel.

But, of course, we were terribly wrong. We experienced poor wifi in all but one hotel- you might have guessed- the one in metropolitan Tunis.

What we should have done was be like some of the other riders on the trip and buy a local SIM. They bought a SIM from a provider called ORANGE and it worked quite well.

Get Your Guide is by far our favourite place to book experiences for all things Europe. What we also love is that you can find major tour companies as well as individual private locals who can really show you around the unbeaten paths.

ESSENTIAL TIP 8: CHEK WEATHER CONDITIONS

So, most people assume that AFRICA is hot all year round.

There are also weather changes to consider when travelling to Tunisia. The weather is very much like most Mediterranean countries so there are 4 seasons.

Moving south towards the Sahara desert, the climate is more arid and dry. The days might be warm in the colder seasons, but the nights get cold when they release the day’s heat.

We rode through Tunisia at the beginning of March and the temperature ranged between 15 degrees Celsius during the day and 5 degrees Celsius at night.

Therefore, don’t forget to take a look at the weather for the period you want to travel to Tunisia. Obviously, you should bring appropriate clothing for the period of time you are visiting Tunisia.

ESSENTIAL TIP 9: BRING APPROPRIATE TYRES

This is definitely a tip not to ignore if you plan on riding your motorcycle to the south of Tunisia. Whether you go into the desert or not, you will encounter some sand on the roads. Depending on the winds, there might be more sand or less. Also, there might be some off-road riding.

This means you should have tires that are designed for off-road and sand rides. Preferably, it should be tyres with deep grooves for the best traction.

View from behind a motorcycle of a sandy road with palm trees lining both sides of the road. There are motorcycles ahead and a man riding a horse coming from the opposite direction

ESSENTIAL TIP 10: GETTING FUEL IN TUNISIA

The next essential tip for riding in Tunisia is planning for fuel. Petrol prices are pretty cheap compared to what you’ll find in Europe. For example, our motorcycle requires around 50 Euros for a full tank of 30 litres, in Italy. In Tunisia, this cost us roughly 30 Euros, which is great!

Regarding how to fuel up in Tunisia, most towns and cities have petrol stations within easy reach, so it won’t be difficult to fill up whenever you need to. However, riding out of bigger towns, you’ll be faced with miles and miles of desert and mountainous terrain with fewer and fewer towns or villages nearby. This means, petrol stations are far and between.  While there are some people selling fuel on the street, there is no guarantee the quality of what they sell.

Therefore, we suggest that you ALWAYS get a full tank before leaving each town. Check the distance to the next town so that you know what fuel autonomy your motorcycle has. With a full tank, our BMW GS 1250 can ride for about 630km.

If you have a smaller tank, then it might be best to travel with a jerry can which you can carry extra fuel.

ESSENTIAL TIP 11: RESPECT THE SPEED LIMITS AND WATCH OUT FOR CAMELS CROSSING

The speed limit for riding in Tunisia is 50 km/h (31 mph) within urban areas, and 110 km/h (68 mph) on highways. The police take their job seriously, so you will get a ticket if you exceed the speed limits.

With a chance of camels crossing the highways in the south, it is important to be very attentive while riding your motorcycle.

Besides, it’s a truly unique experience if you see them crossing, which we’re sure you’d enjoy. So don’t crash into a camel please!

ESSENTIAL TIP 12: RESPECT THE CULTURE, BRING A SCARF!

One of the most important Tunisian traditions to always keep in mind is that they are a Muslim country. As such, out of respect, please dress appropriately without unnecessary exposure, especially when close to holy sites and public places.

With the fact that Tunisia is quite an open country and the people are very friendly and helpful, we think it is only sensible to respect their culture and tradition in return.

Like we’ve always believed, there are things travellers should/shouldn’t do when they are visitors in other people’s countries.

Please do some research on the Tunisian culture so you know how to act respectfully towards the locals and their traditions.

No comparing, no judgements, no discriminations.

Which brings us to the point of bringing a scarf ( or buying one at the many souks in Tunisia!) – for both men and women. This is not only for use when visiting holy sites, but also to cover your nose and mouth when in the desert, to protect them from the sand, and ultimately to keep you enjoying the Sahara to the fullest!

ESSENTIAL TIP 13: BE PREPARED TO ENJOY THE PERFECT ROADS AND AMAZING TUNISIAN LANDSCAPES

Oh yes! With landscapes that go from endless desert to mountain ranges and olive groves, get ready to have the ride of your life. You will be wowed at every turn and amazed by the unique settlements all around you.

What’s more, the roads are in great condition, even those winding up the rural villages in the mountains, as well as through the oases.

So, enjoy your ride through this amazingly beautiful country called Tunisia!

This enduro trip with OVERCROSS takes you to the Tunisian Sahara. Over gravel roads, through mountain landscapes and the Sahara - we spend the nights outdoors in the oases of the desert and far away from civilisation in exciting wild camps in "no man's land". On the OVERCROSS motorbike tours we are on the road as a team and therefore teamwork is also very important on this tour, be it to get through the strenuous sand passages or to cook and wash up together in the evenings. One for all, all for one is the motto of this tour. This interactive motorbike tour is to be seen as a suggestion and rough tour itinerary with the tour description below, who wants standard on an adventure tour?

One of the best motorbike tours in the Sahara - planned for a small circle of endurists who have always wanted to experience the adventure of the Sahara.

Preparation for the journey: Loading of the motorbikes in Tübingen:

For those participants who want to use our Fly and Drive offer and therefore do not want to travel to the ferry port in Genoa themselves, we will meet one week before at the OVERCROSS workshop in Tübingen to load the motorbikes onto the motorbike trailer. We have two seats available in our support vehicle if you don't want to fly but travel with us by road. You are also welcome to travel yourself on your motorbike to our second meeting point at the ferry port of Genoa, where we will load your motorbike onto our trailer for the Mediterranean crossing to Tunisia. Probably the most relaxed option would be to simply fly to Tunis and leave the travel and entry formalities to us.

Those participants who have decided to accompany us in the supply vehicle will meet us in the morning on the day of departure to load the bikes. For those arriving by plane, we ask that you deliver your mopeds one week before departure.

Arrival day 1 & 2: Tübingen - Lago Di Como - Genoa - Tunis

On Friday (one day before the official start of the motorbike tour) we will drive to Lago Di Como (alternatively Milan), where we will spend the night and get in the mood for the tour with delicious pizza by the lake. On Saturday morning we will drive the last leg to the ferry port of Genoa, where we will meet at 13:03h with the participants who have travelled on their own. All participants will receive from us the pre-prepared entry and customs forms including the ferry tickets and first class 4 berth cabin tickets. We have enough time at the quay to lash the remaining motorbikes on the transporter for the crossing and to stow your luggage in the escort vehicle. At around 15:00 hrs the vehicles will be loaded onto the ferry according to Tunisian time. Tunisian time means that we have not experienced this in 20 years! More realistic is 17:00 hrs and departure between 19:00 and 21:00 hrs. After checking into the cabin, we meet for dinner and discuss the next day as we will do every evening.

Motorbike Tour Day 1: Tunis - Hammamet

After breakfast we meet for the tour briefing and for a little surprise your tour guide has up his sleeve! During the tour briefing, riding techniques and the tour itinerary are discussed, as well as the skills and inabilities of the riders. Often participants are concerned that they might hold up the group with poor riding skills. As a rule, they are the ones who then drive ahead ;-) You as well as everyone else will learn a lot about Enduro and travelling on this trip. The theory already starts when we cross the Mediterranean! We dock in Tunis around noon. After we have left the ferry and customs by "express handling", we will drive to our accommodation. There we will meet the participants who arrived by plane on Saturday or Sunday and were brought to our hotel by the airport shuttle.  After a hearty dinner, we will discuss the tour briefing and equipment coordination and give the participants the remaining information for tomorrow's tour day.

Motorbike tour Day 2: Always towards the sun on the edge of the Atlas Mountains

Today we say goodbye to luxury. The motorbike group rides the connecting stage on asphalt and gravel roads over the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, where we set up camp after the first relaxed day of riding. We spend the night in a historic battlefield from the Second World War. In the picture below on the left, the famous Count von Staufenberg was hit in the head by a bullet during a low-flying attack on 7 April 1934, after which his left eye was removed in the field hospital in Sfax. Depending on tomorrow's start, we will visit another phosphorus area, where blasting takes place again and again at 13:00 and the earth is removed on kilometre-long belts - but more about that later - maybe?

Motorbike trip Day 3: From the Atlas foothills to Chott er Rhamin:

We set off early in the morning and travel over phosphorus mining tracks to reach the Rommel track and a 5-million-year-old find in a cave. Over fascinating and scenic routes we reach Chott Er Rahim, 17 metres below sea level. A crossing at this point is rather unthinkable but worth a try ;-) Alternatively, we can drive around Chott Er Rahim on-road to the campsite. There we spend the night and load provisions in Touzeur for the next days in the desert.

Motorbike trip Day 4: Adventure trip between Star Wars and the largest salt lake in Africa :

The Sahara inspired Geoge Lukas in 1977 for the whimsical filming location of the spaceship station Mose Espa . This Star Wars setting and the 2003 trip also inspired Joe to name his son Luke. Here we will do some sand training for the coming days and prepare you for the toughest dune stages in the Sahara. Couch potato was yesterday, the adventure starts now!  A holiday made to measure, showers, camping under palm trees and an extended dinner around the campfire between dust track and sleeping bag. We stock up on supplies and fill the enduros and reserve canisters with fuel before diving into the desert the next day.

Motorbike Tour Day 5 - 8: Lost Lake (Lac Houidhat) - Ksar Ghilane

Over the next few days we ride past the impressive Tembaine table mountain to the southernmost point of this trip, the Lost Lake. These will be days in the desert that will weld us together: shovel, drive and tip over, pick up, GAS and experience the vastness of the Sahara. These days are guaranteed to be the most impressive experiences, which we will review in the evening in the 1000 star hotel under the open sky. This is pure freedom and an adventure for every endurist. Riding in the sand will be a challenge especially for the "big ship" riders - BMW 1200 GS as well as 690 KTM riders had the challenge of a lifetime on this tour. No offense - former participants still talk about this tour after 15 years! The consolation for those who still have reservations: We haven't left anyone behind in two decades ;-) After the days "off", we will treat ourselves to some time out in the oasis of Ksar Ghilane and enjoy the hot springs with cold beer.

Enduro Motorrad Tour Tunesien

Motorbike tour Day 9: Ksar Ghilane

Today we can take a relaxed approach, go on a dune hike, bathe in the hot spring or do a few laps with our enduros over the dunes to the old Roman fort not far from the oasis. The stories about the Oasis and the French Legion are told (in addition to the daily tour briefing) at the evening campfire.

Motorbike tour Day 10: Ksar Ghilane - Sfax - Kerkennah

A last bath in the spring, a last coffee and off we go, either via the other filming locations of Star Was or for an overnight stay in a storage castle. This depends on the mood and energy of the group. The relaxed route takes us along the pipeline track to Matmata and in the last decades we have visited Fatima in her living cave for a cup of tea. On asphalt we head north to Sfax . From Sfax we take the ferry to the largest island in the Kerkennah archipelago. At the landing site of the fugitive president Habib Burguiba, we will set up camp on the stormy corner and light the campfire.

Enduro Motorrad Tour Tunesien

Motorbike tour Day 11: Sfax - Hammamet

After a small breakfast, we circle the island and then take the ferry again, which brings us back to Sfax. Coffee stop at the largest and oldest amphitheatre in El Diem, which was built in 238 by Proconsul Coradius for 35,000 visitors. An incredible building project at the time and fascinatingly sophisticated architecture. Feet up and gas on for the last few kilometres to a delicious hotel by the sea with an infinity pool. So far, we have not treated ourselves to anything except sweat and dust, which we will duly wash down on our last evening in Africa.

Motorbike tour Day 12: Hammamet - Tunis

Our way back to Tunis leads us over Cape Bon (Ras ad ar) which is known from the naval battle of 255 BC and has its significance from the Vandal campaign. In 1943, about 230,000 German and Italian soldiers surrendered here. At Tunisgrad (German name after the defeat of Stalingard) we will enjoy the last sensational view over the coast of Africa at the military station before we have to go to the ferry port of La Goulette to catch the ferry. Good bye Africa, until the next adventure!

Journey home Day 13: Tunis - Genoa

Today your tour guide has one last surprise in store before we say goodbye and arrive back in Genoa at around 15:00 on Saturday. The return journey via Switzerland will be a long one! Around 24:00 we will reach Tübingen and have a drink before going to bed? ;-)

Motorcycle Tour in Tunisia // Alex Mototravellers // ENG

' src=

The desert has always had a particular charm on me, after being there 3 times driving 4×4 and contracted the famous disease Mal d’Africa, I decided to go back by motorbike.

My travel started during  Christmas time 2019, with my “biker in crime” Riccardo.

We organized the trip very quickly. Within 2 weeks we booked the ship tickets from Genoa to Tunis and we planned more or less the route to follow leaving some details to be decided later during the trip.

I will save you all the part of the 30 hours spent on the ferry, with the sea at force 6. I could barely get customs operations done, and then I took refuge in the cabin. We disembarked at 19 in Tunis completely out of schedule, so we decide to travel the 160 km towards Kairouan, fast enough to get to the hotel as soon as possible

With us at this point, there was a new entry…

I noticed Federico while boarding on the ship, in Genoa: his Ktm 990 certainly couldn’t be unseen, and after having dinner together, he decided to join us for 1 day. He was without a map, without any plan, he didn’t even book an accommodation for the first night. The new Trio was formed.

img_0442.jpg

The second day was quiet long, the goal was to reach quickly Tozeur in the South.

After having made a Tunisian Sim card and got an internet connection, we made 300 boring km, passing through the town of Gafsa to reach finally the Rommel Track. The Famous German General was also called “The Desert Fox” for his advanced war techniques. He had several roads built to defend the German rule in Africa. On the Rommel Track is possible to admire a monument in his memory.

Since my last time in Tunisia in 2012 a lot of off road streets   has been paved , Like so part of the Rommel Track, but fortunately we could enjoy the remaining  off road part with a breathtaking view.Is very simple to find this track with Google Maps. The Track is very easy to be travelled, even with big adventure motorbike with a second passenger and baggage.

After the Rommel Track, in order to reach Redeyef, we had to go trough the landfill of the city.We made a quick stop to refuel and we continued the trip towards the famous mountain oasis, very close to the Algerian border.

Don’t Expect to find gas stations in this area, but only places where you can buy bottles of petrol.

On the way we stopped in Tameghza where there is one of the most famous Canyon of the valley, eroded by the passage of the water for thousands of years. Our guide, Faruck, explains to us the history of this city which in 1969 was swept away by a flood that killed more than 300 people, and also about the different varieties of date tree.

We departed again in the late afternoon towards Tozeour. Unfortunately, we couldn’t enjoy the view of this panoramic road because it was already dark. At this point the road was paved and very enjoyable to drive.

img_0541.jpg

We departed from Tozeurt towards  Douz  and we found ourself in the middle of the famous  Chott El Jerid lake. It is a salty big lake and the road is going directly through it. During this period of the year the lake is completely dry.

The landscape here is unreal, the road is completely straight as far as far as the eye can see, we met just few others cars on the way.My companions wanted to go and discover the salty area, but a rusty abandoned bus in the middle of it made them change idea.

Arrived in Douz we had lunch with a local Guide at the Palmiers Restaurant. The guide name is Arbi and he has been recommended to me by a friend. He is specialized in desert tours and speaks a perfect English. For lunch we had a fantastic grilled lamb,   brick au l’euf, and a classic Tunisian salad.

My idea was to reach the ”Cafee portiere du desert” as the name says, located at the edge of the desert in order to test our heavy twins on the sandy strips. In case we couldn’t make it the plan to was to take the Pipeline track, a boring paved road towards  Ksar Ghilane .

Arbi instead suggested us to do the track that runs along the   Parc du djebi l, going through the desert and reach our camp located half an hour southward Ksar.

img_0838.jpg

Like so we decide to follow his suggestion, excited at the Idea to drive in the desert, we didn’t realize that was very late with a lot of km to do…

The km from Douz to the camp are a lot and 95% off road, a mix of fast tracks and strips of sand fine as flour.

We drove the first 70 km enjoying like never before reaching 110km/h, the dunes here were low put tricky. Riccardo made a jump with is 1290s that broke the suspension, at the meanwhile, looking at him, I closed the gas and I got buried, from 60km/h to 0 in a a half second.

My leg was stuck under the bike. I tried to dig, but I couldn’t get free, Riccardo and Federico came back to help me. It took us  20 minutes of sweat and swear to get the bike out, it was buried up to the engine guard.

After 1 hour driving through the dunes we reach the Cafe Grand Erg, nothing more than a shack in the middle of nothing. Riccardo has pierced a tire, but fortunately we repair it with a tubeless. At this point was clear that we couldn’t manage to reach the camp and the sun started to set. After a little debate we decided to risk and we tried, but the sand blocks us again after only 3 km where the dunes were high 6-7 meters.

We turn the bikes and we drove back to the Cafee for the night.

img_0865.jpg

We spent our Christmas Eve in the fortune shack, with 6 Tunisinian and 3 Lebanese guys, that welcome us in the best way possible. None of them spoke English but somehow we managed to communicate. We had a hot meal and lots of mint tea, we sang in unknown languages, following the rhythm of an empty tank. At the end of the Evening We fell asleep still wearing our bike suits just on dirty carpets directly on the desert sand at the temperature of -2 degrees C…

It has been an incredible experience!

img_0896.jpg

The next morning we had breakfast it  homemade bread cooked under the sand, ricotta cheese and tea, we said bye to our new friends and start again our journey towards Douz, back to the civilization!

img_0978.jpg

We decide to spend the Christmas lunch at the restaurant Le Palmieres, laughing about the adventures we had.

The next morning we visited the area of Matmara, driving off road surrounded by beautiful landscapes we reached the village of Zeraua.

Zeraua is an abandoned village located on top of a hill dominating the valleys around. We drove through the village, the houses are in ruins, but we saw three women wearing the veil which were not really entusiastich to see strangers around. As soon as we stopped our bike, a group of kids and old people came to welcome us. An old man, at the beginning a bit suspicious about us, start to tell us the story of the village that is nowadays home of 1 person only  they are also there to visit the village.

After the classic pictures we departed again trough different fast tracks with breathtaking landscapes. We were not even checking the GPs, we just enjoyed driving for more than 2 hours without even knowing where we were, it was one of the most beautiful day of the journey.

Founded the paved road we drove towards Djerba stopping for lunch in Matmara. Arriving at the Island we saw one of the most colorful sunset I’ve ever seen.

img_1245.jpg

We had a gourmet dinner at the Djerba’s Casinò

The morning of the sixth day was about relax, beach, massage and gym (not me), in the afternoon we departed towards Tunisi,(600km away) with a night stop in Sfax. Sfax is not a turistic place.

Arrived in Tunisi the next day we visited the city and we had a very good fish lunch in the La Goulette port area. In the main steet you can find a lot of good restaurants that serve fresh fish at very reasonable prices.

img_1544.jpg

We pass the morning before boarding in Sidi Bou Said, located about 20 minutes from the center of Tunis, where we treat ourselves to the last nargilè and the last mint tea! If you have read all this story you will have noticed that many famous places are missing,I have neglected them specifically, we wanted to spend our time doing off-roading (our passion) and relaxing, because it was still a holiday …  Total km about 1800

Arrival in Tunis.

Arrive at Djerba airport, cross to the mainland, gear up, hop onto your motorbike and head straight for the dirt. 130 km of tracks, gravel and rocks with a quick lunch at a local restaurant. Overnight inside a cave in a typical troglodyte hotel.

Great playground on single tracks, camel grass, eroded landscape and the first sand dunes on the way to the last town before the huge Sahara opens in front of us.

Short stroll through the local market to stock up for the upcoming days far from the civilization. The first a bit demanding dunes, a quick lunch at a desert café and overnight at the campfire and surrounded by magical dunes.

Rest day with or without playing in the sand, or a loop over quite high and demanding dunes to the Tembaine tabletop mountain and back to our bivouac.

Two options: easier route together with our off-road truck – more flats and gravel, fewer dunes; challenging route over dunes, dunes and more dunes without support to the Ain Houidat lake deep in the desert and then over another set of dunes, dunes and dunes to the oasis of Ksar Ghilane to meet our truck and the rest of the group there.

Rest day at a natural thermal pool. Beer, swimming, showers, shade, camel or horseback riding or playing in the sand sea just in front of the oasis.

Camel grass and low dunes at first, fast gravel tracks in the second part to reach the troglodyte town of Matmata again.

Early morning transfer to the Djerba airport.

Day by day itinerary

ARRIVAL IN TUNIS Please arrive at the designated 5***** hotel in Tunis by dinner time on day 1 of your motorcycle tour. From there on, we will take care of your travel. Dinner and overnight in the hotel.

Surface: compact sand, tarmac, gravel, round rocks

On this day, you will be already riding in the desert. But first, you will take a morning flight from Tunis to Djerba (not included in the tour price, but can be arranged by us) where you will be greeted by your Desert Soul guide and taken to where our assistance truck and the bikes will be waiting for you. We will gear up and quickly get off the asphalt. The 130 km ridden on this day will take us across gravel roads, dry riverbeds, flat areas and through the mountains to Matmata, village famous for its troglodyte dwellings. Only the last 10 km we will ride on asphalt. After checking into our troglodyte 4**** hotel, we will have a drink and discuss today's riding experience with the other tour participants. Dinner and overnight in the hotel.

Surface: compact sand, sandy tracks, rocks, gravel, sandy riverbed, dunes, maybe some tarmac

MATMATA – DOUZ We will leave the hotel in the morning and get off the asphalt straight away. After traversing the mountains surrounding Matmata, the open desert space will expand in front of us. Fast tracks, sandy riverbeds and some low dunes will characterize today's riding experience that will bring us to the oasis of Douz, also known as "the gate to the Sahara". Dinner and overnight in a 4**** hotel in Douz.

Surface: soil, dunes

DOUZ – SAND SEA After a morning stroll through the town and a visit to the local market to replenish our provisions for the desert, we will leave Douz on this day and take our motorbikes into the sand sea. The exact route and difficulty level will be chosen by the guide based on the proficiency level of the participants. We will spend a couple of nights deep in the desert without light pollution or cell-phone coverage. Dinner and overnight on an attractive location in the Desert Soul Mobile Camp.

Surface: dunes

SAND SEA – TEMBAINE MOUNTAIN After the breakfast, our bikes' heading will be south and later southeast, reaching the Tembaine table mountain in the afternoon after crossing the a bit challenging sand sea. You will be learning the importance of correctly deflated endure bike tyres today. An alternative easier route following the support truck can be taken by whoever doesn't feel fit for the higher dunes that we will be riding on this day. After reaching the table mountain, we will of course park the motorbikes and climb to its top on foot. You will feel the soft breeze and enjoy perfect silence with a sight of endless dunes, stretching to the east, south and west as far as the horizon. On this day, our bivouac is planned to be near the mountain.

Surface: gravel, dunes

TIMBAIN – KSAR GHILANE This half-day stage will lead us directly across the sand sea, without support, to the famous tourist oasis of Ksar Ghilane, known for its thermal pool surrounded by beer-selling bars. Spending some time in the warm water will be much welcomed after the long desert stage. Dinner and overnight at the oasis camp site.

KSAR GHILANE Rest day around the oasis pool. We suggest a trip to the Roman fort, playing with your motorbikes in the dunes or taking an excursion with camels or on horseback. Dinner and overnight in the oasis camp.

Surface: gravel

KSAR GHILANE – MATMATA On this day, we will experience a completely different desert stage to reach again the Berber settlement of Matmata we will have known already from our first riding day. Desert gravel roads and open tracks, frequently crossing dry flash flood channels in the first part, will give way to impressive bare mountains surrounding us when already approaching Matmata. Farewell dinner and overnight in a 4**** hotel.

MATMATA – DJERBA – TUNIS Early in the morning, we will take you to the Djerba airport from where you can take the morning flight to Tunis (air ticket not included in the tour price, but can be arranged by us) or extend your stay in Tunisia on the beach. If you have been using your own motorbike, it will be delivered to you on an agreed date in Ljubljana (or transported on your expense to any other destination of your desire). End of our services.

Viaggiare sicuri in Tunisia

Viaggiare sicuri in Tunisia

VIAGGIARE IN TUNISIA: I DOCUMENTI NECESSARI

Viaggiare in tunisia in moto: i consigli.

COSA MANGIARE IN TUNISIA

  • lavarsi sempre bene le mani specie prima dei pasti;
  • evitare i cibi crudi ed i latticini freschi;
  • controllare il sigillo della bottiglia dell’acqua e/o della bevanda scelta;
  • evitare il ghiaccio nelle bibite.

ACCORTEZZE SANITARIE

  • usare la massima attenzione nell’uso dei servizi igienici, in particolare quelli pubblici;
  • disinfettare sempre anche la ferite più piccole;

AFFIDATI A RIDER-MAP

Sicurezza stradale in tunisia.

  • mezzi in circolazione con luci di ingombro quasi inesistenti;
  • mezzi a trazione animale anche in autostrada;
  • mezzi in contromano sulla corsia di emergenza;

The tour was great, covering much of Tunisia. Both the tour guide and driver where very helpful and accommodating. Hotels were good for the most part, only caveat was the beach hotels not having working AC on the month of May as it wasn’t summer yet. Note that the Tozeur site where Star Wars: A New Hope was filmed costs extra to visit. This tour company I highly recommend.

Ali is a very safe driver, we has a smooth ride. In term of Mohamed, my tour guide, his English is impeccable. He has a great knowledge of Tunisian histories, the country landscapes and the diverse cultures of each ethnic groups. In my short trip, I gain tremendous of knowledge. In addition, he makes sure our accommodations are up to my expectations. I fully appreciate him being my tour guide and I highly recommend him for anyone who looking for a guide in Tunisia.

Desert Tour Kairouan to El Jem 3D/ 2N

The tour guide was knowledgeable and on time for everything. However, the printed itinerary did not match where the guide took us or in the same order. Fortunately, the guide took us to a place not on the itinerary -- the Hotel Sidi Idriss, where the first Star Wars movie was filmed -- and that was fantastic. It was a great surprise to stop there, although it shouldn't have been a surprise and should have been on the itinerary. Also, at some points the guide, who also served as the driver, seemed like he'd done the tour a million times and was a bit bored.

The tour was good. The accommodation and food was good, some places better than others, but given that tourism is still recovering from Covid, everything was okay. The places we visited were interesting and beautiful. The bonus of my tour was I was the only person and fortunate to have driver Jamal and guide Nidhal. Nidhal was very articulate, knowledgeable and good company. Jamal was an excellent driver, considerate and friendly. Both my driver and guide were very helpful and generous with their time when I had a problem accessing money due to problems with in my card. I would recommend both of them and tours in Tunisia with Tunisie Voyages. Deborah

Immersive Tunisia is ideal for those who want to have a good look at the country's grand historical sites. The tour was very well organised by Tunisie Voyages. Our guide was a mine of information and was responsive to our wishes. Our driver moved us around swiftly, safely and with great courtesy. The standard of food and accommodation was good throughout. I highly recommend both Tunisia and the tour.

While I did not take this trip due to a last minute cancellation, the customer service that I received from this company was incredible. On the week of the tour, some unforeseen circumstances led me to have to call of my trip to Tunisia entirely. I was concerned that I would not be able receive a proper refund because of the short notice, but this company did an incredible job of understanding my needs and serving me in the best way possible. They communicated with me on a Sunday, and with the right context, provided me with a response/solution that is an A+ in terms of customer service.

What people love about Tunisia Tours

The tour was very interesting and versatile, well organized
Good tour covering key attractions in Tunisia. Could have been excellent if Tatouine (Yes, it is a real place in Tunisia and inspired George Lucas to use that name in Star Wars!) were included in the itinerary as it has very unique buildings (warehouses) that warrant a visit. There are gaps in the program especially the first day that could accommodate this attraction with some juggling.
