Taxis are readily available in cities and larger towns. Uber operates in Florence and is another convenient option for getting around.

Best Time to Visit: Tuscany is a year-round destination, but the ideal times to visit are between April and June, and September and October when the weather is comfortable and the countryside is at its most vibrant.

Language: Italian is the official language. However, English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants.

Currency: Euro (€) is the official currency of Italy.

Safety: Tuscany is generally safe for tourists, but like any other tourist destination, be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded places.

Electricity: Italy operates on a 220V supply voltage and 50Hz. The power plugs and sockets are of type F and L.

When is the best time of year for a wine tour in Tuscany?

The best time to visit Tuscany for a wine tour largely depends on your personal preferences, but there are a few peak periods that are particularly popular. Spring (April to June) and Fall (September and October) are often considered the ideal times for a Tuscan wine tour. The weather during these seasons is typically mild and pleasant, and the landscape is at its most vibrant – with blooming flowers in spring, and changing leaves in the fall. Fall is also the time of the grape harvest (known as “vendemmia”), which can be a fascinating process to witness. Some wineries even allow visitors to participate in the harvest. Summer (July and August) in Tuscany can be quite hot, and many Italians go on vacation in August, which means some wineries might be closed. However, the region is still beautiful during this time and the wine tours are certainly still operational. Winter (November to March) is the low tourist season in Tuscany. While the weather can be cooler and wetter, there are fewer tourists, making it a good time to visit if you prefer to avoid crowds. Regardless of when you choose to visit, it’s always a good idea to check with individual wineries or tour companies in advance for their operating hours and to book your tour.

What is the main wine region in Tuscany?

The most renowned wine region in Tuscany is the Chianti region, famous for producing Chianti and Chianti Classico wines. It’s characterized by its idyllic rolling hills, historic vineyards, and scenic villages. The Chianti region is situated between Florence and Siena, making it conveniently accessible for tourists and wine lovers. However, Tuscany boasts several other notable wine-producing areas. For example, Montalcino, located south of the Chianti region, is renowned for its Brunello di Montalcino wines. Nearby, Montepulciano produces the famous Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Further west towards the coast, you’ll find the Bolgheri region, known for its superb “Super Tuscan” wines, a term referring to high-quality wines that don’t adhere to traditional Italian wine regulations but have nonetheless achieved worldwide recognition. Each of these areas offers unique variations in climate, soil, and winemaking traditions, contributing to the diversity and richness of Tuscan wines.

Enjoy a grape Stomping in Tuscany tour and crush grapes like the Romans did, with wine tasting and lunch at a Tuscan villa.

grape stomping wine tour in Tuscany

  • Description

Tour Details

Meeting point, tread grapes and make wine during the vintage.

Always wanted to try grape stomping! Discover traditional wine-making methods during this complete wine tour in one of Italy’s top-producing wine regions!

What is Grape Stomping?

Grape stomping, also known as grape treading, is a traditional winemaking method that involves crushing grapes with bare feet to extract their juices for fermentation. This ancient technique dates back to early civilizations and is often associated with the romanticized imagery of wine-making festivals and celebrations.

How to they make wine treading grapes?

Grape stomping begins with carefully harvested grapes being placed in a container, often a large wooden barrel or vat. Participants, usually barefoot, step into the container and rhythmically press down on the grapes, breaking their skins and releasing the juices. This process also helps to mix the grape solids and skins, which contributes to the flavor, color, and tannin extraction.

Do they still make wine using feet?!

While modern winemaking methods have largely replaced grape stomping with mechanical presses for efficiency and hygiene reasons, some wineries still practice it as a cultural event or tourist attraction. Grape stomping serves as a charming reminder of the age-old craftsmanship and labor-intensive processes involved in winemaking

Highlights of the Grape Stomping in Tuscany wine experience tour include:

  • Visit a historic villa and estate vineyard close to Florence.
  • Learn about the harvest process and discover how the grapes are turned into award-winning wine on a guided tour of the cellar
  • Try your hand (or rather, foot) at the traditional ‘pigéage’ method
  • Partake in a tradition that dates back to at least 3rd century CE with the first representations of grape stomping depicted at a Roman harvest party
  • Enjoy a traditional light Tuscan lunch with a glass of wine served pool-side*
  • You can even take a dip if you’d like to enjoy a swim in the pool!
  • Surround yourself with stunning views.

Tyeshia Grosvenor – 16/10/2019

My two friends and I had an amazing time. Our tour guide Paul was knowledgeable and very down to earth which made the tour more enjoyable. Does get hot while standing in the vineyard. One thing to remember is to pack a swimsuit for the opportunity to go for a swim which my friends and I forgot. Overall a great time would definitely recommend!

Jamie Eyre – 16/10/2019

Our guide Alessandro was awesome. The vineyard was stunning. The production process informative and of course the grape stomping was quite the fun experience. The wine, olive oil, and food was delicious. Highly recommend!

Sarah Woods – 17/09/2021

This was truly a fun experience! Our guide took us to a beautiful Tuscan Villa where we met the owner of the villa/micro winery. After giving us a full description about the process of making wine, they invited us to pick the grapes ourselves. Then with those grapes, we stomped them into mush! Afterwards, we were invited for a wine tasting and lunch of delicious pasta. we talked with our guide about the area and learned a lot. Then we had a tour of the villa which was absolutely breathtaking. Would 100% recommend this tour! Check out my Youtube channel, “Not Your Average Abroad” and look out for our Epic Trip Through Tuscany Video. there you can watch clips of the tour and the fun we had! Hope you enjoy!

J 6 . Grape harvest experience in Tuscany

Dates of activity, number of people in your party, general info, your message.

HOW IS WINE MADE?

A “vendemmia” (Italian for grape harvest) is one of the most fascinating experiences you can enjoy in Tuscany during the harvest season. It is a wonderful way to learn a lot about the local wine & food traditions but also about the local culture. Those who tried it report that the atmosphere in a working winery is something definitely unique ! You can participate to a vendemmia on a charming wine estate, see the process of wine making during the most thrilling operational phases and taste some excellent local wines served with lunch .

An experience in the vineyards with the harvesters Our grape harvest experience takes place in the morning for about two hours (timing is flexible). You meet our local guide and have an introduction to the world of vineyards before acting! The guide gives you a lot of information about the plants and the cultivation of the vines as well as the weather conditions of the seasons and how they affect the fruits. Then you get your scissors and your crates and you start collecting grapes assisted by your guide and the other winemakers around.

The winery during the “fermentation mode” After collecting some grapes you will follow your guide and the tractor to the operational areas in the winery, where you see all the machinery involved in the process, to understand the wine-making process in detail. From the destemming machine to the fermentation casks you will learn in detail how the grape juice is transformed into wine. Finally, you rest in the tasting room of the property and taste some great wines produced by the winery, served along with lunch.

If you visit Tuscany right at the beginning of the harvesting season you may coincide with the grape stomping. This is a habit in one of our wineries in the very first day of the vendemmia to facilitate the fermentation of the grape juice. Hopefully you will coincide with it!

NOTE This activity is strongly related to weather conditions, so there might be changes to the date or to the itinerary. This will be evaluated closer to the date. An obligatory insurance for the day must be issued.

This is a list of specialties that you are likely to sample as part of the program of this tour. Please, note that the specialties of the tasting session and/or lunch may vary according to the season and the availability of the products in the day of the tour.

Vermentino white wine from Tuscany

Tuscan white wine

Tuscan white wines are often based on a typical grape called Vermentino, which provides strong minerality and freshness to the wines made with it. Other very common grapes for white wines in Tuscany are Trebbiano and Malvasia.

Terricciola red wine

Tuscan red wine

The Tuscan soil provides a wide variety of red wines, from easy-to-drink young table wines to full-body and robust riservas. Tuscan red wines are often based on Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo or Colorino grapes and sometimes on international grapes like Merlot, Cabernet or Syrah.

Fragrant green olive oil

Tuscan extra virgin olive oil

The best extra virgin olive oil is made with fresh Tuscan olives immediately squeezed after the harvest at an oil mill. The most common olives for Tuscan olive oil are frantoio, leccino, frantoio and madremignola.

Farro Salad

Insalata di farro

Salumi toscani misti

Tuscan salamis and prosciutto

A plate of mixed Tuscan cold meats: rigatino (a kind of bacon), Tuscan salami (a regular salami with large fat bits), finocchiona (a salami with fennel seeds) and arista (a pork loin long baked and seasoned with rosemary and other herbs).

Cantuccini alle mandorle

Cantuccini biscuits in Tuscany are one of the most common desserts. They are made of sugar, butter and eggs and they are refined with almonds. In some versions they have other nuts or chocolate.

In our tour we like showing you places off the beaten track and introducing you to Tuscan people with their personal stories, careers and characters. You will have one of our guides with your party during the whole tour. Please, see below all the guides who can be with you. During this experience you can also meet some of the Tuscan friends involved in the events. Please, see below which friends you are likely to encounter.

Luca

Ciao Amici!! My name is Luca. I'm in my 40s and I'm for sure the craziest guide at Arianna & Friends As all my other colleagues, I am a multi task personality in the company. I take care of bookings, I am one the content managers of our websites and I'm a tour leader. When in season, I lead almost all types of tours and cooking classes at Arianna & Friends'. My favourite ones are the truffle, olive oil and vespa tours. Riding a vespa through our wonderful hills is a must to do while in Tuscany... of course only if you know how to ride a scooter! When I started working for Arianna & Friends, back in 2011, I was only able to prepare a very simple "pasta al pomodoro" (pasta with tomato sauce). Now, after more than 10 years of cooking classes and thanks to our wonderful cooks, I am a very good chef (but please, don't tell it to my wife!). My motto is "smile you are in Tuscany". I'm happy and very proud when I see people enjoying my country and having fun in Tuscany. Join us! Join me! Let's have fun togheter!!

Massimo

Ciao a tutti! It’s Massimo here. I’m the “first one” of the friends of Arianna in order of appearance, as we first met me when we were… ehm … at the high school! Well, the first “activities” we arranged together were those many teenagers do, like going to rock concerts (long live Metallica!), barbecuing, drinking inexpensive wine, mainly with no understanding of it. In over 25 years we became more serious adults; so serious that we finished university together and we then decided to start a business from scratch, back in 2007, in an area where nothing like this existed before. I am a natural born teacher, as I’ve always liked sharing knowledge on the beauties of the world with other people. When I started sharing the wisdom of the local cuisine with visitors to Tuscany or showing them the rooted traditions behind a wheel of local pecorino cheese, I realized how fantastic my job is. In fact I discovered that being a wine & food guide is a sophisticated way of being a good teacher, so I can’t help but love it! In the A&F team I’m the multi-language guide or assistant in all activities we offer, from cooking classes, to wine & food tours, from Italian language classes to vespa tours. In the low season I deal with the website development and content management. As I am very curious, I spend all my free time travelling all over the world and of course going on learning as much as I can: over the last few years I took part in several seminaries on extra virgin olive oil, I started a three-year course to become a sommelier, I experienced a professional training to become gelato maker and I decided to never give up in learning the Arabic language. Stay connected as we will soon come up with some new great ideas for your entertainment and enjoyment of our beautiful region! Ci vediamo in Toscana!

Arianna

And that's me, Arianna. When I was a student at the univeristy together with Massimo, we had a dream. We knew already we wanted somehow to spread our culture, but we didn't know in which ways yet. And we knew we needed to first get more educated ourselves, to go deeper in what for us belonged to our everyday life, before making it avaiable to the others. We made a lot of researches, made many contacts, and we finally found a good way to become ambassadors of the Tuscan culture, taditions and lifestyle. Yes, I admit it, the power that moved everything was my passion for food! For good food, and in particular for the good food of my mamma and my nonna, hehehh! It was learning from them that I started thinking that I couldn't miss the opportunity to share all I knew with others. It couldn't be different because here where we live, food IS culture! And so we made up a name for our project, our future business, that had to give this message: spend time with us, your Tuscan friends and you'll feel like in a family and you'll experience Tuscany in a very authentic way. So the name Arianna & Friends was picked as the best choice. Personally, I love planning, making people happy, organizing, having crazy ideas .. so crazy that sometimes Massimo needs to bring me down to earth! I like making sure that people are more than satisfied when they come back home. I'm lucky to have Massimo, Consuelo, Moira, Luca with me along with all the other "boys and girls" that help us providing excellent services, all of us, always with a big smile on our faces :)

This is an email we received from Jen who experienced a day grape harvest experience at a fantastic winery in Tuscany with us.

I wanted to let you know that my family and I enjoyed the Grape Harvest tour. We’re very glad that Hilton recommended your tour group. Massimo our guide, was fantastic! He was well informed, pleasant and very accommodating. We were a group of four and he addressed all our questions whether they pertained to wine-making or not. He provided us with technical and operational insight about the wine industry, from agriculture to wine-tasting. Probably one of the best tours in Tuscany showing professionalism and hospitality. Massimo gave us a personalized tour which we appreciated very much. We definitely got more than we expected from the tour…and all because of Massimo!

We hope to do other tours with your team when we return to Toscana! Jen

Grape Escapes

Exclusive Florence

Exclusive florence, tuscany wine holiday.

Tuscany Wine Holiday- Credits Fontanelle

At a glance

Trip summary.

These three and four day packages offer the ultimate in Tuscan luxury. Staying at the 4* luxury Hotel Brunelleschi, guests will enjoy a flawless level of service at the hotel and one or two days of private VIP wine tours.

After breakfast on day two of your Tuscany wine holiday, you will be met at the hotel by an English-speaking specialist wine driver/guide, who will accompany you on a full day Chianti wine tour in an executive level vehicle (Mercedes E Class or equivalent). The enticing blend of history, culture and gastronomy starts right away, as you drive along the hilltops of the “Black Rooster” road, the ancient Chiantigiana road, which is the Chianti wine road. During your Tuscany wine holiday, your guide will tell you about the legend of the Florentine black rooster and how it differs to the Sienese white one.

You will firstly be welcomed as the guests of the prestigious Antinori winery for a VIP experience. Here, you will taken on a full behind-the-scenes tour of the estate and cellars, seeing first-hand the individual stages of the production process and your visit will conclude with tastings of seven of Antinori’s most celebrated wines, including Cervaro della Sala, Pian delle Vigne, Badia a Passignano and the famous Tignanello. The tasting will take place in the most exclusive part of the cellars, the intimate Bottaia room. Lunch will then be served in Antinori’s restaurant, which is located on the scenic rooftop terrace. The traditional Italian cuisine will be accompanied by two further Antinori wines. After lunch, you will have the opportunity to visit your favourite Chianti winery for a tour and tastings. The Grape Escapes Tuscany specialists are happy to offer advice and make suggestions if you would prefer. Please note that a number of the more exclusive estates do not tend to receive visitors at weekends and some of them do not receive visitors at all. We would be pleased to discuss the various options with you and contact the individual estates accordingly.

The four day break includes a further two tours and tastings on day three, at your selected wineries in Brunello di Montalcino. You will again be met at your hotel by your private luxury Mercedes S Class vehicle and English-speaking driver/guide. During the tour, you will drive through the quintessential Tuscan countryside. Cypress-lined narrow roads and medieval hilltop wine villages are classic images of the region, and your guide will make various stops for you to take some beautiful photos. You will have free time for lunch in the town of Montalcino, located on a charming hill. The splendid St Antimo abbey is a must-see attraction. In the evening, a five course dinner with wines, water and coffee will be served in the hotel’s intimate double Michelin-starred restaurant.

Who we are & what we do

We're Grape!

What sets Grape Tours apart is our extensive knowledge of Italy's wine regions, backed by three decades of experience in the wine industry. This experience has granted us valuable connections to some of the finest wineries, many of which prioritize sustainable and organic viticulture—an aspect that holds great importance for us.

We are committed to the belief that life is too short to drink bad wine, and our personal and professional goal is to always feature high-quality selections in our itineraries. Our approach to wine is comprehensive, with storytelling playing a crucial role in our tours.

Grape Tours was founded by Rebecca and Pierre, and we are actively involved in every aspect of the business. Our dedicated team comprises wine professionals whom we've proudly gathered over the years. If you have any questions and reach out via email , you'll likely hear from Ilaria Miele , one of our earliest team members. The rest of the team looks forward to meeting you at our designated meeting poin t in Florence.

HGTV / MAX is airing Fixer to Fabulous Italiano where our friends Dave & Jenny Marrs help us renovate our farmhouse, Campo Sasso.

Rebecca Christophersen Gouttenoire launched the tuscan-wine-tours.com website in 2004, laying the groundwork for Grape Tours. Driven by her deep passion for Tuscan wine, she recognized the growing demand for high-quality wine tours among increasingly well-traveled guests. Leveraging her prior connections established during her tenure as a wine bar owner in Florence and later as a wine distributor, she shaped Grape Tours into a reputable venture.

Rebecca holds certification as an Italian Wine Scholar educator and offers wine education programs catering to both beginners and professionals.

Rebecca writes the newslette rs and once in a while on the blog .

Rebecca and Pierre are a couple in business in life with 2 boys and a dog.

Here you can read the full version of how Rebecca & Pierre met which is quite a nice story!

Pierre Gouttenoire, co-founder of Grape Tours, is a French winemaker and enologist holding a M.Sc degree in agronomy. With over 15 years of experience, he has worked for leading wine companies in France.

Pierre enjoys to spend time on the family farm  called Campo Sasso in Chianti Classico where he tends to a small vineyard, an olive grove and a cheese cellar.

Campo Sasso is an old farmhouse renovation that was also featured on HGTV's Fixer to Fabulous Italiano.

From time to time, Pierre guides tours in France and occasionally in Tuscany for connoisseurs, but his primary role is overseeing the seamless operation of the business.

Pierre's childhood in Roquefort, in the south of France, fostered his passion for cheese. Consequently, he manages the purchasing and aging of cheeses for Formaggioteca Terroir, a Cheese & Wine Bar that the couple established in downtown Florence.

Both Rebecca and Pierre hold certificates of Olive Oil Experts and produce and export their own prime quality organic extra virgin olive oil .
