Travlers' Choice

Trip of a lifetime!

I cannot say enough positives about Custom Asia Travel! We visited Vietnam in December/January 2023 and had an amazing trip with our 3 teens. The itinerary exceeded our expectations! We travelled to Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, and Nha Trang. We had no issues with any of our transportation around the country - our drivers and guides were always there on time (early, actually), friendly and helpful. The accommodations were excellent and our guides were fantastic (Tanh, Tanh, and Viet - they were awesome!). Every place we stayed put our rooms right next to each other, often adjoining, and the kids’ room always had two twin beds and a cot, while my husband and I had a king bed. This was perfect as our teenagers did not want to share beds, lol! The activities were super fun and appealed to all of us. So many highlights - the kids loved the rice farm tour (riding the water Buffalo elicited the biggest smile we’ve ever seen from our 16 year old!), seeing the caves in Ninh Binh, the cooking class in Hoi An, and Ha Long Bay. I really appreciated that some of our itinerary was focused on less crowded activities - a couple of the temples we saw were practically empty, allowing us to enjoy and experience these beautiful sites on our own. We did a couple of bike rides which were also highlights, such a great way to explore and see the area! Minh was available and responsive while planning the trip and while we were there. I agree with others reviews about whether she ever sleeps! She was able to coordinate our luggage getting dropped off as it did not arrive with us, and contacted one of the hotels about a ring that had been left, and arranged for us to pick it up. She was warm, friendly, knowledgeable, and so helpful. We truly had a relaxing and stress free trip because of the excellent customer service from Minh and our guides. With only having 12 days to visit we were so grateful to be able to enjoy the travel and know that Minh and her team were there if and when needed. I highly recommend using this company, you will not regret it! Now I am dreaming of how quickly we can make it back!! Thank you thank you to Minh and the team, our trip was unforgettable!

When is the best time to visit Vietnam & Laos?

The best time for visiting Vietnam and Laos is from October to April. The temperature is cool; the sky is clear from north to south in Vietnam. Meanwhile, the weather in Laos is mild and dry all year. Besides, from December to January, the weather in north Vietnam will be colder, which is better when exploring the mountainous area in the north of Vietnam. Meanwhile, the Mekong River, Laos' principal waterway, has high water levels that make transferring simple.

What are the top places that you should not miss when taking a tour to Vietnam & Laos ?

Hanoi, Vietnam's capital and second-largest metropolis, is the country's political, economic, and cultural hub. Hanoi is a historic metropolis with traditions dating back over 1,000 years. The city contains several areas of ancient importance and beautiful scenery, earning it the moniker "land of millennium cultural relics."

The splendor of nature and artistic significance of Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a magnificent jewel in Vietnam's tiara. Visiting this area is like entering into a fairy tale, the stuff of tales, with dozens of towering limestone islands, karst grottoes, and quaint junk boats cruising the brilliant emerald waters.

Hoi An is a popular tourist attraction with a 1,500-year heritage. Therefore, Hoi An Ancient Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was previously named one of the top 10 tourist cities in Asia, attracting visitors from all over the world with its long white-sand beaches and many interesting activities.

Luang Prabang

The deep appreciation of the culture that Luang Prabang, one of the must-visit cities in Laos, generously extends to all visitors is incredibly alluring, whether it be for the city's history, culture, religious activities, nightlife, variety of genuine meals, or well-known attractions like Kuang Si Falls, Wat Xieng Thong, or Royal Palace Museum.

In Vang Vieng, visitors may enjoy kayaking and inner tubing on the Nam Song River, as well as the town's rope swings, zip lines, swimming pools, and wide decks for mingling. Many ethnic Lao, Kmou, and Hmong villages are also within a short distance from the town, and Vang Vieng Organic Farm is located in the hamlet of Phoudindaeng, about 4 kilometers north of the town. Visitors may thus engage in a variety of activities in Vang Vieng and have many unforgettable experiences.

The best itinerary for a Vietnam & Laos tour?

You will first arrive in Ho Chi Minh City - the largest city in Vietnam with plenty of scenic spots and historical sites first. Then take a flight to Hoi An to enjoy a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 1,500-year heritage then continue to take another flight to Hanoi - the country's political, economic, and cultural hub and Halong Bay - another UNESCO World Heritage Site and end the trip in Luang Prabang to enjoy the city's history, culture, religious activities, nightlife, variety of genuine meals, or well-known attractions like Kuang Si Falls, Wat Xieng Thong, or Royal Palace Museum, etc.

How many days should I spend for a tour to Vietnam & Laos

For a short trip (6 – 8 days), you can visit the three most popular places in both countries:  Hanoi, Halong Bay (Vietnam) and Luang Prabang (Laos). If you have 9 – 13 days, Hue, Hoian, Ho Chi Minh City, and Mekong Delta are good choices for adding to your trip to Vietnam and Laos. In the case where there are 14 days or more, besides the above destinations in Vietnam and Laos, you will have enough time to visit other places in Laos like Vang Vieng, Vientiane, and Xieng Khouang.

Itinerary idea in detail

Private customized tour. Ask us about booking your international flights at our preferred rates.

Your guide will meet you at airport arrivals and transfer you to your hotel. At leisure this evening — perhaps wander out into the vibrant Old Quarter and around Hoan Kiem Lake, which is beautifully lit at night.

Temple of Literature, Hanoi

This morning, your guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel and bring you to the Museum of Ethnology so that you can start learning about the origins, distribution, appearance and fascinating culture of the many ethnic minorities in Vietnam. In the afternoon, an in-depth exploration into the delicious street food available on your doorstep is given by an expert in the field — a local food blogger.

Conical hat making, Vietnam

Today is a full day of driving from Hanoi up to the mountains of Ha Giang. There is plenty to see along the way, and you will have opportunities to observe and interact with locals, take photos of stunning scenery and stop for refreshments and comfort breaks. You stay in a pretty, family-run homestay in a village on the edge of Ha Giang, that is very pleasant to wander around.

Dao Ao Dai women selling brooms

Today, the driving from Ha Giang to Meo Vac takes about half the day, but as ever, there are stops for refreshments and scenery. Your home for the night is a traditional Hmong, clay-walled building which is very characterful. You may like to do some walking in the local area — the Auberge can arrange a guide for you.

Meo Vac Market, Ha Giang

Today, drive to Nam Dam Village (a half day's driving, but the stops will probably make the journey take the best part of the day). A highlight of this journey will no doubt be the vertiginous scenery of the Mã Pí Lèng Pass. You will also visit the Hmong King's Palace at Sa Phin, designed by a Chinese Feng Shui expert, and see a Hmong weaving village with its intricate looms.

Black Hmong at Meo Vac market

This morning, you may like to do some walking in the area populated by the Red Dzao ethnic minority. There is some great scenery and walks between two and six hours. Later transfer by car to Hoang Su Phi, this should only take about three hours. It is a very scenic journey, however, you will see some beautiful rice terraces — the last section is a fairly windy mountain road. Now for a stay at the lovely Pan Hou Village, a beautifully landscaped property with an excellent restaurant and spa house.

Hoang Su Phi, Vietnam

A full day's trekking out on the rice terraces with your private guide. Don't forget your camera!

Hoang Su Phi, Vietnam

Another lovely drive today, to get to Sapa. Please be aware that some of the roads earlier on in the journey are untarmacked mountain roads. Some of the valleys you pass through are absolutely stunning. It's a full day's driving with stops. Tonight stay at the gorgeous Topas Ecolodge, with great views out to the mountains.

Views over the rice terraces of Sapa, Vietnam

Today your guide will take you out to visit minority villages in the area. In the afternoon you can take the cable car up to the top of Fan Si Pan, the tallest mountain in Indochina.

Morning mist over Sapa town, Vietnam

Today is a full day's driving (with stops, as usual) to get to Dien Bien Phu, the site of a very important battle between the French and the Vietnamese that led to the French moving out of Vietnam.

Dien Bien Phu in Vietnam

This morning you have touring of the museum and key sites on the battlefield. Afterwards, you have a couple of hours of driving to get to the little-used border with Laos. Meet your Laotian guide and driver and drive through pretty mountain scenery to Muang Khua, situated on the stunning Nam Ou River.

River travel from Muang La to Nong Khiaw

Today you have a combination of road and boat transfers to reach Phongsali in northern Laos. The boat journeys are incredible — very few tourists get up to this part of the Nam Ou, it feels quite wild and remote. The traveling will take most of the day, but as usual, there will be stops along the way. Phongsali is one of the least visited parts of Laos, it is a mountainous area populated by many ethnic minorities (including the Akha) and where tea is grown. It is close to the border with China.

Trekking towards an Akha Village, Phongsali

Today, your private guide will help you explore Phongsali and its surroundings, including tea plantations and processing plants. The procedure for "curing" the tea once picked is fascinating.

Boat travel in northern Laos, Phongsali

From Phongsali you have a full day's driving to get to Muang La — and a very special property indeed. Muang La Lodge is a luxury property, set up by a French couple, that is perfectly in harmony with its surroundings and the local community. All meals are included here and the food is really quite special. The lodge has an excellent spa and hot springs on site!

Local minority hill tribe village, Muang La, Laos

A full day to explore the local area and learn about the ethnic minorities here.

Laos tribal women

The last leg of your incredible overland journey takes you, over about half a day, to charming Luang Prabang. Enjoy the atmospheric night market.

Kuang Si Waterfall, Luang Prabang

Today you have about half the day to explore the attractions of Luang Prabang with your private guide. We strongly recommend visiting the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre, a very well-maintained museum dedicated to the tribal culture of Laos. This will help you process much of what you saw on your journey over from Vietnam.

Tad Sae waterfall

We will transfer you to the airport ahead of your international flight home.

Highlights of Vietnam & Laos

Vietnam and laos adventure tour, south vietnam to laos.

Across our range of Vietnam and Laos tours , you will find the most well-planned itineraries spanning the two great nations of Vietnam and Laos, separated by a 2100 km border but joined in so many ways through politics, geography and a common approach to life. Visiting both countries is the ultimate experience in Southeast Asia, providing you with some incredible highlights that no other country in the world could offer.

The various activities and experiences on our Vietnam and Laos tours compliment the assets of both countries perfectly. All of the tours listed below are constructed with an overarching view of displaying the countries’ highlights, while also keeping a meticulous eye on detail and adding the finer touches that add up to one magnificent holiday.

Below, we have listed the top five experiences in both countries, all of which feature on at least one of our Vietnam and Laos tours. Read on to discover the perfect destination for you.

The Five Best Experiences in Vietnam

The dragon-shaped country of Vietnam, pressed up against the East Vietnam Sea, has had a long and fruitful history that manifests itself today along its coastline and inland regions. For all the turbulence that this resilient country has withstood, it has emerged afresh as one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the world. Our Vietnam and Laos tours feature the international attractions of Halong Bay, Hoi An and the capitals of north and south Vietnam, along with the lesser-known destinations of Mai Chau, Ninh Binh and others.

The Mekong Delta

The mighty Mekong River, which flows through Laos and Vietnam, ends at the Mekong Delta, a 40,000km2 area of vein-like distributaries that run off the legendary river into the South China Sea. The crisscrossing paths of the river’s many run-offs create fertile soil all around the delta, which accounts for over half of the country’s rice production, earning it the nickname ‘the rice bowl of Vietnam’. The lush tropical scenery that flanks the delta’s narrow waterways is also a beneficiary of its nutrients, and the beautiful sensation of floating through its canals is a result of the thick forests of nipa palm and coconut trees that grow here.

Close to the tranquility found in its backwaters, the fervent activity of its floating markets takes place. Two in particular, at Cai Be and Cai Rang, have found an audience with tourists, who flock down from Ho Chi Minh City or nearby Can Tho city in the early morning to catch views of the perennial skirmish between vendors and prospective buyers.

Famed for its coconuts, Ben Tre is one of the twelve provinces that make up the Mekong Delta and occupies an advantageous position on the coast, just south of Saigon. A serene drift down its backwaters is an unforgettably romantic sight, as the light permeates the coconut canopy, filtering down specks of sun that dance on the surface of the water. In its nearby villages and fruit orchards, many villages live an idyllic life, farming and creating myriad handicrafts from the versatile fibres of coconut shells.

What Vietnam and Laos tours go to the Mekong Delta?

• South Vietnam to Laos 11 Days (Cai Be, Cai Rang and Can Tho)

• Best of Vietnam and Laos 15 days (Ben Tre)

The northeast corner of Vietnam has one of the most instantly recognisable landscapes in the world. The glorious Halong Bay stretches its beauty far over the Gulf of Tonkin , creating an otherworldly seascape where streaked, forested mountains stand vertically in the emerald water and traditional junk boats skirt the sides of beaches, caves and lagoons. The unique atmosphere it bestows upon its passengers is profound, and many come for return visits to experience the magic of Halong Bay anew.

The 2-day itinerary that features in our Vietnam and Laos tours gives you plenty of time and opportunity to explore the bay via kayak, through its caves, on its golden sands and in the jade ocean that laps at the foothills of its rising hilltops. On the boat itself, there are cooking classes, tai chi sessions, opportunities for fishing and many indulgent meals served with high-quality hospitality.

Coated in a unilateral yellow, the buildings of Hoi An belie the long-standing history of an ancient port town, one that was an essential link on the maritime silk road as it passed between Europe and China. The wealth it gained from such a role was spent on ostentatious displays by its traders and businessmen, which often came in the forms of temples, community houses, assembly halls and resplendent private residences. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed town today is a stalwart of Vietnamese tourism, and it creates a beautiful addition to any tours of Vietnam and Laos.

The satellite villages in Hoi An’s suburban surrounds have been contributing to the town’s success for centuries. Organic vegetables from Tra Que , wooden ships from Kim Bong and various handicrafts and tools from Tra Nhieu once flowed through the town, which nowadays capitalises on their tourist potential by offering excursions to their humble enclaves.

About an hour’s drive inland from Hoi An, you will find My Son Sanctuary . These are the ruined remains of a Hindu temple complex built by the civilisation of Champa, who occupied the region and started construction in the 4th century. Through natural erosion and wars between kingdoms and countries, My Son Sanctuary still stands in the lush jungles of inner Hoi An, earning UNESCO recognition in 1999 for the grand beauty of its design and the deft touches of its Hindu statues and carvings.

What Vietnam and Laos tours go to Hoi An?

Mai chau and ninh binh.

These two inland areas are some of the best for seeing Vietnam’s iconic limestone mountains, which soar above rice paddies and rivers, evoking a romantic image of ancient Vietnam. Mai Chau lies about four hours to the southwest of Hanoi, making it a popular weekend trip for adventurers from the capital. The roads that cut through Mai Chau district afford spectacular views upwards from the valley floor, at the jagged rise of mountains, or downwards from its mountain roads, at a valley of steeped rice paddies and diligent farmers in conical hats.

About 130km to the east lies the province of Ninh Binh, where the small enclaves of Hoa Lu and Tam Coc draw day-trippers from Hanoi. Hoa Lu has a rich monarchial history, housing two of Vietnam’s kings and acting as the capital for the 44 years that spanned their rules. King Dinh and King Le are sanctified in two ornate temples here, surrounded by a moat and backed onto by protective mountains; making Hoa Lu an important relic of history in verdant surrounds. Nearby Tam Coc offers a very scenic ride on a simple wooden boat rowed by a local, snaking between golden rice paddies and towering rocky spires, cutting through caves and offering utter serenity for visitors to the region.

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City

The differences in outlook that drove these two cities away from each other were settled by the long and bloody Vietnam War. There are still huge differences between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in terms of their architecture, people, food and attitudes to progress versus tradition. Hanoi features more heavily on the latter, with many pagodas, shrines and temples surviving from ancient times, while its many lakes and parks provide a natural advancement of the city. Its many highlights include B a Dinh Square , where the body of Vietnamese hero, Ho Chi Minh, lies in the mausoleum next to his former residence and the One-Pillar Pagoda , while the Temple of Literature stands nearby as Vietnam’s oldest university.

Ho Chi Minh City, on the other hand, focuses more on business and the increasing metropolitan and international appeal of the city. Its construction is a mishmash of Vietnamese, French, Japanese, Western and Chinese styles, viewable throughout the city and its Cholon district. The historic Cu Chi Tunnels lie just 50km away as a testament to the dedication of the Viet Cong, who lived, stored weapons, treated the wounded and plotted the fall of Saigon from a 250km network of tunnels beneath the jungle floor.

Five Best Experiences in Laos

Laos’ wonderful mixture of nature and religion have put it on the tourism radar in the 21st century. Many visitors from all over the world come for its staggering selection of waterfalls, untouched jungle and the mountains that rise from the banks of zealous rivers. The only sweeping statements of architecture you will find in Laos’ cities are dedicated to Buddha; the country keeps strong ties to its Buddhist roots and displays a graceful resurrection from its costly civil war through its golden stupas and the hundreds of ornate temples that span the country.

Kuang Si and Tad Sae Waterfalls

Along with Tad Fane , Tad Moun , Tad Phaxuam , Liphi and Khone Phapheng , these Vietnam and Laos tours are graced with the opportunities to explore brilliant and diverse waterfalls, situated in the jungles and on the islands of Laos. In the outlying areas of Luang Prabang, two of the country’s most beautiful falls tumble gradually through the jungle to rest in pools of the most wonderful azure hue. Kuang Si Waterfall is a popular tourist site to the southwest of Luang Prabang, but one that still affords much tranquility, as a quiet spot can always be found here in which to swim.

Southeast of Luang Prabang is the location of Tad Sae Waterfall , nestled into the thick vegetation of the jungle and interspersed with many trees that rise directly up through its teal pools of water. Located at the end of a jungle trek, Tad Sae enjoys a more reclusive location than Kuang Si and the lack of tourists that comes with it. However, the falls dry up almost completely during the dry season, which is in operation for about half of the year, between February and August.

Vientiane’s Buddhist Temples and Alms Giving

The beating orange heart of Laos is represented in its Buddhist monks, who embody the country’s complete devotion to this ancient religion and the continuation of its traditions. One example is the daily alms giving, a solemn procession of Buddhist monks draped in bright orange robes accepting the food and gifts of residents, which is a tradition that dates back to the 14th century.

The alms giving is an attractively humble tradition, but one dwarfed by the grand Buddhist temples of Vientiane and other cities. That Luang Stupa is the national emblem of Laos, built of 1 golden stupa and 30 smaller ones, while Wat Sisaket and Wat Prakeo showcase incredible architecture and a level of detail in their ornate decorations that demonstrates the undying commitment of Laos’ devout people to their god.

The bolaven plateau .

On the doorstep of Pakse lies the Bolaven Plateau, a beautiful expanse of land lying high above the rest of Laos. Its elevated position gives it fantastically cool temperatures while the rest of the country is gripped by the heat of the wet season. The volcanic soil creates the perfect conditions for coffee, which is grown in abundance across the plateau by the many diverse ethnic minorities of the area. Two in particular, the Laven and the Suay minorities, have attractive homes in the jungle where they weave vibrant textiles into clothes, and create handicrafts from the coconut, rattan and other materials that they have on offer.

Plant and animal life flourishes on the Bolaven Plateau . The paradise of verdant jungles speckled with waterfalls and rising mountains in the background is a very real one here, and it brings with it an ecosystem perfect for monkeys, tigers and elephants, along with about 300 species of birds.

Luang Prabang River Cruise

The Mekong Rivers cleaves the town of Luang Prabang in half, where one side offers stunning views of spiralling mountains on the other side. Luang Prabang enjoys a wealth of activity along its banks, through the perimeters of the town to the outlying areas where vegetation is left to profit from the nutrient-rich soil. In the jungle here is one of the accommodation options on our Vietnam and Laos Tours, the gorgeous Nam Ou Riverside Resort , situated close to the twin chambers of the Pak Ou Caves . These caves contain thousands of Buddha statues left by pilgrims at the end of their voyage and lie on a cruising path that takes tourists back to Luang Prabang, skirting the foothills of majestic mountains and offering the ideal setting for a vivid sunset.

Following the river’s southerly flow, cruises pass by a local bear sanctuary, where bears are removed from the threat of trafficking and given free space to roam in their natural jungle habitat. Another attraction on the Mekong’s banks is the ever-popular Ock Pop Lok Living Center , which gives a platform for Laotian and ethnic minority artisans to showcase their colourful wares.

What Vietnam and Laos tours feature a Luang Prabang river cruise?

4000 islands.

Laos’ deep-south is reserved for Khone Island and the 4000 Islands, which operate as a miniature archipelago during the dry season where the Mekong’s levels recede to reveal a multitude of landmasses, previously submerged in the water. Save for a few homestays, the largely flat expanse is not built for tourism, and electricity is a rather new luxury added only recently.

The appeal of these islands is their exclusivity. Travelling around by boat or bicycle, you can find an area with very few tourists and untouched beaches, island outcrops and cascading waterfalls (including the largest in Southeast Asia, Khone Phapheng). Life operates at a much slower pace around the 4000 Islands, and simply lying in a hammock with a book while listening to an ambient soundtrack of chirping birds and the soft flow of water can offer wonderful tranquility.

Learn more about Laos

Best time to visit laos.

Laos is a great place to visit at any time of the year as the weather doesn't vary much – it’s always hot and humid! The coolest time to visit is from November to January. This is also the driest time, and the main festival period, so it’s an interesting time to travel through Laos. The wet season runs from June to October. It rains frequently during this time, temperatures average over 85 degrees Fahrenheit and although some roads may be closed due to flooding, it is a great time for river travel. February to May is drier but hot, with temperatures climbing over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Culture and customs

The population of Laos is made up of more than 100 different ethnic groups, with each having their own distinct clothing, language, customs and way of life. The Lao Loum, who reside in the lowlands along the Mekong, make up the largest ethnic group. Smaller ethnic groups include the Hmong and Mien, both highland dwellers, and the Lao Thoeng, who prefer the lower mountains. Many tribes share cultural similarities with tribes from neighbouring countries, so it’s possible to see Chinese , Vietnamese , Khmer and Thai influences within the dress, food and arts of these people.

Generally, Laotians are known for their laidback lifestyle and calm, steady approach to life. With an emphasis on the simple pleasures of family, food and religion, most people from Laos remain closely connected to their family and village for a lifetime. Most Laotians live in villages, rather than the city, where the sense of community is strong and people are connected to their neighbours and friends. Visiting wats (temples) to make offerings and give alms to monks is a common part of daily life for most, with much respect and reverence reserved for monks.

Buddhist holidays and traditional festivals linked to harvest time and holy periods are commonly celebrated throughout the villages of Laos and are timed according to lunar cycles. With different dates each year, it can be hard to predict the exact timing of these local celebrations, but visiting one can provide great insight into the fascinating culture of Laos.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Laotian cuisine draws on culinary traditions from its neighbors, so visitors will be able to taste the flavors of China, Thailand and Vietnam in the food of Laos.

Things to try in Laos

This spicy meat salad is considered the national dish of Lao. The delicious combination of minced beef, chicken or pork seasoned with chili, lime and mint, served with vegetables and sticky rice is a firm favorite with locals and travelers.

2. Khao Poon

This popular soup of meat, rice noodles, lime leaves, chili, garlic and fish sauce has a few variations. The version made with coconut milk makes the dish similar to a laksa, while the version without coconut milk is a lighter option.

3. Fresh fruit

The markets of Laos have a cornucopia of delicious fruits on offer, either fresh or whipped up in a juice. Pineapple, orange, watermelon, guava and banana are plentiful but why not try more exotic fruits like lychee, longan, rambutan or jackfruit?

The answer to Laos’ heat and humidity is a bottle of locally brewed Beerlao, best served cold at the end of a long day of exploring.

Geography and environment

Landlocked Laos is located in South-East Asia, bordered by China, Thailand , Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar . The topography of Laos is very mountainous, with much of the land being covered in forest and unsuitable for farming. Due to the mountainous terrain, Laos lacks a developed road network, with most locals living in small villages in the highlands, lowlands and along the Mekong River. Visiting Laos is like going back in time to when highways, traffic jams, mass transit systems and skyscrapers didn't exist. Visitors will be awed by the lush landscapes and stunning scenery, which is unlike anywhere else on earth.

History and government

Early history.

It's thought that Laos has been inhabited by people for thousands of years, although written evidence reveals that societies existed in the 9th century. Early society was based on agriculture and prior to the advent of Buddhism in the 16th century, people largely subscribed to animist beliefs and Shiva-worship, with archaeological evidence of this remaining today.

Like its neighboring countries, Laos was ruled by a series of kingdoms and was subject to invasion from surrounding forces from nearby domains. Europeans first arrived in the area in the 1600s, with the Dutch being the first to arrive. Despite this, the French have had the most European influence in the region. After enduring years of invasion and control from neighboring countries, Laos also had French rule to contend with in the late 1800s, when it became a French colony.

Recent history

Laos was controlled by Japanese forces during World War II, was declared an independent state in 1950 and gained full independence as a constitutional monarchy in 1954. The 1960s proved to be a devastating time for the people of Laos, with their nation gaining the dubious honor of being the most bombed country in the world. The United States bombed Laos extensively in an attempt to eradicate North Vietnamese sanctuaries, and sadly contemporary Laos is still dealing with huge amounts of unexploded ordnance (UXO) that is littered throughout the countryside.

A coalition government was set up in 1962, but in 1975 Laos became a Communist state when the king gave up his throne in favor of a president and prime minister being instated. During the late 1970s, many people of Laos fled to neighboring countries as refugees, as trade embargoes from foreign nations led to widespread poverty and disadvantage. By the 1990s, Laos had become a full member of ASEAN and foreign nations had lifted their trade embargoes, which allowed free enterprise to grow.

Apart from being a great place to pick up handmade wares, buy fresh produce and mingle with locals, the many markets of Laos are one of the most interesting places to take photos also.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Laos

1. Textiles

Laotian weavers are responsible for crafting an impressive range of top-quality fabric wonders. Silk and cotton are the most common and with everything from handmade bags, scarves, cushion covers, placemats and linen on offer, it won’t be hard to go over your luggage limit here.

2. Saa paper

Saa paper (also known as Mulberry paper) is made from the leftover bi-products of the silk industry. You’ll be able to find Saa paper notebooks and stationery, cards and even gorgeous hanging stars in some of Laos’ markets and boutiques.

3. Hmong handicrafts

The Hmong people are famous for creating colorful handicrafts, which can be found in most markets around Laos. Hand-embroidered bedspreads, vibrant clothing and cotton dolls make meaningful global gifts for friends back home.

Festivals and events

Bun pi mai (lao new year).

One day just isn’t enough for Laotians to celebrate New Year - they need a whole three days! The festive period is characterized by water fights, street parties, feasts, laughing and smiles, as the past year’s troubles are washed away to welcome a new year of luck and prosperity.

Vientiane Boat Racing Festival

Entrants from all over Laos travel to Vientiane to compete in this big boat racing festival held at the end of Buddhist Lent. Food stalls and sideshows line the streets to entertain the thousands of people who gather on the river to watch the races.

Is it safe to travel in Vietnam and Laos?

Yes, both Vietnam and Laos are generally safe for travelers. However, as with any travel, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded tourist areas. Petty theft can occur, so keep your valuables secure. Also, follow local traffic rules and be cautious when crossing streets, as traffic can be chaotic.

Can I use my credit card in Vietnam and Laos, or should I rely on cash?

While major hotels, restaurants, and stores in cities accept credit cards, cash is still king, especially in smaller towns and rural areas. ATMs are widely available in urban areas, but it’s a good idea to carry a sufficient amount of local currency (Vietnamese Dong and Lao Kip) for smaller purchases and in places where cards are not accepted.

Is it more convenient to travel from Vietnam to Laos or vice versa?

Hi Daniel, The convenience of traveling between Vietnam and Laos largely depends on your starting point, intended destinations, and the availability of transport options. However, generally, both routes – from Vietnam to Laos and from Laos to Vietnam – are quite comparable in terms of convenience. You can consider the flight connectivity from major cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang with direct flights to Vientiane or Luang Prabang in Laos. If you travel by car, consider the key border crossings like Lao Bao (Vietnam) – Dansavanh (Laos) and Cau Treo (Vietnam) – Nam Phao (Laos). Best regards, IDC Travel Team.

Experiences of a lifetime

Tauck's 16-day Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam travel adventure encompasses the best of Southeast Asia as you explore the legendary cities of Hanoi, Hué, Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok.

Visit cambodia's ta prohm temple, angkor's ta prohm temple... one with the jungle.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor contains hundreds of temples and palaces built by Cambodia's Khmer people from the 9th – 15th centuries… all enveloped by forest until the early 20th century. Built in the 12th century as a Buddhist university and monastery, jungle-clad Ta Prohm Temple is one of Angkor's gems. Left in the clutches of centuries-old vines, its delicate reliefs are covered by creeping plants and its massive stones are cleaved by green; the effect is otherworldly yet magnificent.

Chiang Mai's hill tribe villages

Meet the hill tribe villagers of chiang mai in thailand.

Outside Thailand's city of Chiang Mai, the people of the region's remote, rural hill tribes farm and observe traditional ways of life. Each tribe has its own language, beliefs, customs and crafts... and its people are happy to share them with visitors to their colorful villages. Meet members of the Palong, Padong and the "long-necked" Karen tribes, whose women are known for the distinctive, traditional brass rings worn around their necks – which you can try on yourself.

Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai

A welcoming spirit in Chiang Mai

Nestled among emerald gardens and terraced rice fields, the spacious pavilions and luxury villas of Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai exude the vibrant, welcoming spirit of Northern Thailand. Revel in intriguing design details, from handpicked Siamese artwork to authentic Thai cotton furnishings. Polished teak floors and overhead cooling fans add a touch of classic tropical style. Each accommodation is crafted for outdoor living; large windows let in the lush vistas, while your open-air Thai veranda (sala) is ideal for immersing in the scenic surroundings.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally,  you will need a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey and current visas to enter Vietnam and Cambodia. You will not need a visa to enter Thailand for the short duration of this tour. Please Note: Your passport should contain at least three blank visa pages.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, please contact a consulate or embassy of Vietnam, of Cambodia and Thailand to determine if entry visas are required.

Tauck has collaborated with VisaCentral in the US to assist our guests with processing and issuing their travel documents. If a guest opts to work with VisaCentral, their services are available online at www.visacentral.com/tauck . To speak directly with VisaCentral Customer Service, call 844-860-7199 (toll-free in the US) or email [email protected] .  All US citizens require a valid passport to enter Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, and that passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the completion of travel. (Please note that although adult passports are valid for a full ten years, children's passports require renewal every five years.)  Your passport must also contain a minimum of at least 3 blank visa pages. Please be advised that that extra visa pages are no longer available for passports. If you need additional pages in order to comply, you must renew your passport even if your current passport has not expired.  If you are a United States citizen and do not have a valid passport, please contact the closest US passport agency or consult the US State Department web site for detailed information on how to obtain or renew your passport at: www.travel.state.gov .  A visa is not required for Thailand.  Visas are necessary for both Vietnam and Cambodia. Please note that these visas must be processed within 90 days of your arrival.  All fees will be listed on visa paperwork.  The visa fee, as well as any applicable consular fees and shipping fees, are not included in the tour cost. The visa application will include the amount of the visa fee, which varies by destination.  Additionally, you may elect to obtain a Vietnam e-visa online at https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/en and/or a Cambodian e-visa on line at www.evisa.gov.kh  Non-US citizens should contact the embassies or consulates of Vietnam, Cambodia & Thailand to determine what documentation is required.  We advise bringing a photocopy of your passport as well as 2 extra passport photos in case your passport is lost during the tour. Be sure to check the expiration of your passport. New passports and visas may take several weeks to obtain.  IMPORTANT NOTE: Failure to obtain ALL necessary documentation prior to your tour may result in being denied entry into a country, or delays in entry until proper documentation can be obtained. In consideration of the larger group (and to maintain our planned itinerary), travelers who have failed to obtain the necessary documentation in advance may need to remain at the airport, and could thus be responsible for arranging (and paying for) their own transportation to join the group. Tauck will not be responsible for obtaining any missing documentation, nor will Tauck be responsible for any expenses incurred, missed tour components or other losses resulting from the failure to obtain proper travel documents in advance.  Regardless of which visa service company is used, the application will require a summary of your Tauck itinerary, which we will be happy to provide. Please email [email protected].   Please note: Because a visa is an official document, Tauck cannot apply for a visa on your behalf, and we are very limited regarding the assistance we're able to provide. If you require help, we recommend working with a reputable visa service company as they can provide the highest level of assistance.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Special Luggage Restrictions for this Tour

Due to strictly enforced weight restrictions on the on-tour flights, luggage weight per person must not exceed 44 lbs (20 kg) and you are permitted only one piece of checked luggage. Luggage exceeding the allowable weight is subject to excess baggage charges, which may result in a considerable additional expense.

The maximum allowable weight for carry-on luggage is 15 lbs (6.8 kg), and the maximum allowable dimensions are 22" by 14" by 10" (55.9 cm by 35.6 cm by 25 cm).  These dimensions include all wheels, handles, pockets, etc. If these dimensions are exceeded, the carry-on piece will be checked.

Regulations within most airports require that customers handle their own luggage through customs.

Checked Luggage – General

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and only those items you need handy during the day such as purses, make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or in the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour. If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify Tauck as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country.  These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking  here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking  here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting.  Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site.  It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

This Southeast Asia tour is very active and includes 6 on-tour flights. You should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances over uneven terrain that may, at times, be rocky and muddy, as some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Southeast Asia is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, some dating from antiquity. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion. Please Note: There are numerous steps on this itinerary. In addition to walking, various other modes of transportation used to highlight the different aspects of Southeast Asian culture and geography for this tour could include airplane, boat, sampan, cyclo and tuk-tuk (auto rickshaw).

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES:  This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey.  Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Guests should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The climate in Southeast Asia is hot and humid year round. We suggest that you pack lightweight, casual clothing. While it is quite rainy and hot for most of the year, our departure dates are always scheduled when weather will be optimal.

Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is flexible. Casual, cotton clothing is recommended. Sturdy yet comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in are essential. For dining in the evening, and for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, you may wish to dress up a bit, but certainly be comfortable. Jackets for men are not required.

Valet laundry service is available throughout the entire tour. Hairdryers and irons and ironing boards are either located in your hotel room or are immediately available upon request.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Toiletries, sundries, and over-the-counter and prescription medications may either be difficult to find or not available in Southeast Asia.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your journey across Southeast Asia:

  • Casual, cotton clothing
  • An optional sports jacket for men
  • Casual yet elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Light sweater
  • Light waterproof jacket
  • Sturdy yet comfortable, walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Collapsible umbrella
  • Toiletries, sundries
  • Pre-moistened towelettes
  • Handkerchiefs
  • Antibacterial lotion
  • Medication for allergies/aspirin/upset stomach/diarrhea
  • Insect repellent
  • Travel alarm/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Camera, film, memory cards, chargers, batteries and other photography accessories
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at  www.necessarygear.com  as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.
