A little history lesson

Villefranche-Sur-Mer has a long and enduring history that stretches back for centuries. In the 6th century, it was already an important port for the Ligurian people.

Later, it served as a strategic stronghold for the Counts of Provence in the 11th century and was taken over by the Genoese until 1481. After that, it became part of Savoy, finally becoming part of France in 1860.

Today, Villefranche-Sur-Mer is alive with culture, beautiful beaches, and great restaurants. Its picturesque streets boast bright murals and street art that adorn walls throughout the town and its many restaurants offer some of the finest cuisine on the Riviera.

Villefranche-sur-Mer - Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Alpes-Maritimes

One of France's most beautiful harbour towns, overlooking crystalline waters framed by Provençal greenery, Villefranche-sur-Mer is located not far from Nice . Its deep water means all kinds of boats can drop anchor there and their owners can make the most of the balmy climate. Treat yourself to a delightful day out exploring the old town's winding streets, where the orange-tinted façades are reminiscent of the ever-present sun that shines on Villefranchois territory. The warm colours of the houses contrast with the pale shades of the louvred shutters, which are often half-closed, allowing a glimpse of the inhabitants' peaceful lives. Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the maze of arcades and steps: you will probably end up on Rue Obscure, an underground street built in the 13th century for soldiers to pass through more easily. The place was also used for storing wine and protecting livestock.

Continue your tour at the Church of St. Michael, with a façade in a sublime colour palette of white, pink and pale yellow. Its colours and Baroque architecture from the 18th century echo the opulent religious buildings of Italy. The inside of the monument, in amber shades, contains one of the oldest organs in Alpes-Maritimes , dating from 1790. You can also admire a life-size, recumbent statue of Christ, carved from fig tree wood.

Another place to discover is the Chapel of St. Peter near the fishing harbour, which was decorated by Jean Cocteau in 1957.

History buffs will have a field day exploring the citadel founded by the Duke of Savoy in 1554 for the purpose of guarding the harbour. Remarkably well preserved, it offers a reminder of the medieval glory of this ancient town. The citadel has three museums within it: the Volti Museum dedicated to the art of sculpture, where you can discover a hundred or so bronze, terracotta and copper female statues revealing their voluptuous curves in contrast with the rough stone; the Goetz-Boumeester collection including famous paintings, notably by Miró and Picasso, with a total of a hundred or so works ranging from figurative to abstract art; and the Roux collection of nearly 300 historical polychrome ceramic figurines illustrating daily life from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.

It you have time, get away from it all on the Cap Ferrat peninsula, which you can see from the harbour. It has some of the most beautiful palaces on the French Riviera , like the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, a magnificent Italian-style monument.

Villefranche-sur-Mer is a small beach resort and residential town (population 5,000 in 2017) on the French Riviera . The deep water harbour is home to Mediterranean cruise boats, whose tenders routinely disgorge several thousand passengers on organised trips to nearby Eze Village and Monaco. It sports excellent restaurants and a coarse sandy beach much favoured over Nice's stony bay. Convenient harbour car parking attracts visitors from Monaco and along the Riviera. The Citadelle st Elme dates back to antiquity and the town offers easy access to the millionaires peninsula of St Jean Cap Ferrat.

Get in [ edit ]

The route by car from the Basse Corniche down to the old town and waterfront is very tricky in the high season due to the narrow streets and heavy traffic, coaches etc. When you arrive you will also find it difficult and expensive to park. The best way to get to Villefranche is by taking a TER train. They run along the coastal towns between Nice and Monaco, making several stops along the way. Tickets are very cheap (for an adult from Nice to Villefranche is €2.10) and can be purchased and then used at any time, unlike the more strict TGV in France. Trains run everyday and arrive in Villefranche approximately every 20 minutes, depending on the time of day. The station is in the centre and an easy walk to the old town.

Get around [ edit ]

The town is best seen on foot. It is a relatively easy bicycle ride from Nice--there and on to Cap Ferrat and back to Nice should only take 5 hours max.Stick to the lower road

See [ edit ]

Do [ edit ].

The Beach Villefranche is a great day trip from Nice because of its proximity, size and beach. It's still not a fine sand, but much better than the smooth stones that make up Nice's beaches. Additionally, because the town is quite small, there are next to no tourists clogging up the quaint, waterfront town. With this said the beach is very busy in the high season and very narrow so space is limited.

Buy [ edit ]

The town is full of small shops, mostly catering for the tourist trade but also plenty offering the usual services for the permanent population. The tourist shops are very expensive. There is a food market on Saturday mornings and an antiques market on Sundays.

Eat [ edit ]

Villefranche has no shortage of good restaurants though very few if you are on a tight budget. the ones on the waterfront are the best known and pricey but you can find more reasonable ones back into the town.

  • Le Cosmo . Great atmosphere, friendly service and a good position. Good children's menu. A family of two adults and four children can eat well for about €100.
  • Les Palmiers .
  • Café dell Arte . A great little lunch place on the main street in the center of town. Salads, fantastic omelettes, and cheap prices. Between €5 and €10.
  • La Serre . Probably the best value in town and very friendly. Slightly unglamorous position but bags of charm.

Self-catering

If you're staying self catering in Villefranche it's worth being prepared. There are two small supermarkets in the Old Town and one on the main road and they are about double UK prices and quite poorly stocked. There are two good boulangeries and a couple of vegetable shops. There is a butcher shop at Place de la Paix, where you will also find a small collection of local shops including boulangerie, fruit shop, pharmacy, and cafe/newspaper shop. These are local shops, they are not glamourised for tourists but have their own innate charm. There is a small fish stand on the quay in the morning and one that appears sporadically up near the boulangerie at Place de la Paix. It is very tough to try and find high quality produce of the kind you would expect to get in the inland provencal towns as there is basically no traiteur. If you have no car you are rather at the mercy of the shops mentioned above and so life will be expensive.

  • The Hotel Welcome . Legendary haunt of Jean Cocteau and as good as it sounds.

Services and shops can be found 2 km away. There are easy links with Nice, Menton, Monaco and Ventimiglia by the RCA bus line or train. Visit Villefranche-sur-Mer (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France)

Villefranche-sur-Mer is a town and seaside resort in the Alpes-Maritimes department of the Cote d'Azur, just a short distance east of Nice . It is a small town and the picturesque harbour and setting make it a highlight when you are exploring this part of the riviera.

On a site occupied since roman times, it was in 1295 that 'modern' Villefranche-sur-Mer was founded by Charles II of Anjou, at that time Count of Provence. The town soon fell into the hands of the Dukes of Savoy and remained in Italian ownership until 1860, when the region was transferred back to France.

Exploring Villefranche-sur-Mer

France This Way review: Villefranche-sur-Mer is one of our favourite towns in France and we always make sure we visit when we are nearby: with a beach, citadel, pretty harbour and colourful old town there is lots to see and always something new to discover.

The town is built on terraces up a steep hill that overlooks Cap Ferrat and the azure blue sea of the Mediterranean below. Villefranche-sur-Mer is small enough that exploring is easy and all principal attractions can easily be reached from the center (and from the train station if you come by train).

Church and town centre of Villefranche-sur-Mer

Most visits to Villefranche-sur-Mer will start on the sea front in Quai Courbet and with a promenade around the beautiful harbour. The port is predominantly now a pleasure port but a small fishing fleet also operates from here. The harbour is a popular and bustling part of the town with many bars and restaurants along the waterfront and in the small square, the Place Amelie Polonnais, just next to the harbour.

While you are in the harbour area you can see the small Chapel Saint-Pierre, featuring decoration by Jean Cocteau.

Just behind the harbour you can explore the attractive old town with beautiful ancient houses lining the steep cobbled streets that climb the hill through the town. This part of the town is pedestrianised and many of the houses in Villefranche-sur-Mer are painted in bright orange and red pastel colours creating a very picturesque ensemble.

The principal street through the centre of the town is the Rue du Poilu, and several houses on this street feature trompe l'oeil paintings on their facades. Poilu is the French name given to the soldiers who fought in the trenches during the First World War (after poil - hair, because the soldiers didn't shave very often), and the road was renamed for the villagers who set off for war along this street towards the train station.

One interesting feature that reminds you that you are in an ancient town: the streets that run along the hill pass through arches under the houses, creating a great atmosphere. The best known of these is called the Rue Obscura, a vaulted street more than 100 metres long that follows the original medieval ramparts of the town and is exactly as it was hundreds of years ago.

In the center you can also see the baroque style Church of Saint-Michel, dating from the 14th century but rebuilt in the 18th century. Towards the edge of the old town (towards the railway station) is a small square with a fountain called the Place du Conseil - this unassuming square was once the centre of local government for Villefranche-sur-Mer.

The Citadel of Villefranche-sur-Mer

France this Way comment: I think that many visitors don't bother climbing to the citadel. This is a big mistake. The citadel contains some lovely buildings, nice gardens, various works of art and interesting museums and is free to enter and is an important part of your visit to Villefranche-sur-Mer!

Statue in the citadel of Villefranche-sur-Mer

The most important historic monument in Villefranche is the 16th century citadel, the large walled fortress that stands poised on a headland above the sea and the town and reached by a short path from the town center. Many of the buildings inside the citadel are painted in bright colours, an interesting contrast to the imposing grey walls of the citadel itself. From the citadel walls you can also see the gardens of the theatre.

The citadel is home to the town hall and other government offices, and several small but high quality museums principally related to art and free to enter: the Volti Foundation has sculptures and drawings (very impressive); the Roux collection is principally ceramic figurines and historical portrayals; the Goetz Boumeester Museum features collages and paintings.

Beyond the citadel there is a marina that still has several of the historically important naval buildings such as the corderie and officers barracks.

Other visitor information

- The main beach is to the east of the town centre below the train station.

- There are several weekly markets in Villefranche-sur-Mer, with the traditional Provencal market each saturday morning on Promenade de l'Octroi being the most popular with visitors.

- The best view across Villefranche-sur-Mer and the harbour is from the corniche road above the far end of the beach, ideally seen in the morning when the sun is on the front of the buildings.

Attractions nearby

As one of the most picturesque villages along the riviera it is not surprising that Villefranche-sur-Mer is a very popular holiday destination both in its own right and also a day-trip destination from the other nearby resorts of the Cote d'Azur such as Nice , and can become very crowded during the summer.

There are numerous attractions close to Villefranche-sur-Mer, including other resorts along the coast such as Menton to the east and Nice to the west, and the coast walk and house and gardens of Villa Ephrussi on Cap Ferrat .

A short distance inland the charming medieval village of Eze stands high above the Mediterranean and a visit is highly recommended.

Explore elsewhere in the Cote d'Azur . You can find more travel ideas in the Alpes-Maritimes guide and the Provence guide .

Relax at the Beach

The French Riviera is known for its beautiful beaches, and Villefranche-sur-Mer doesn’t disappoint! Even better, it is much sandier than the pebbly beaches normally found on this coastline, so it’s great for relaxation. The main beach of Plage des Marinieres is breathtaking, with its deep blue crystal clear water that makes it perfect for swimming. The long bay curves around and has great views across the water to the colorful houses of the old town.

Villefranche harbor is famous for being the deepest in the area, so lots of ships are passing through regularly. It’s nice to spend some time wandering along the harbor, looking at the boats, and soaking in the bustling atmosphere.

Citadel of Villefranche-sur-Mer

The Citadel of Villefranche-sur-Mer is a 16th-century medieval fortress that sits on a hill high above the city. It’s got the best view in town, as it’s high enough to look out across the bay, the town, and the coastline of the Cote d’Azur. Coming here for sunset or sunrise is breathtaking!

It is also home to the town hall, several museums, a beautiful garden, and an open-air theater. Best of all, the citadel is free to enter, as well as the museums. Some of these showcase major artworks and sculptures.

St Pierre Chapel

St Pierre Chapel is the biggest surprise of all in Villefranche-sur-Mer! The 16th-century chapel was once used as a storage area by the local fishermen during the 19th century. Later, Jean Cocteau (a famous artist and film director) found a special place in his heart for the church. Because of this, when it was renovated in the 1950s, he painted murals of the local fisherman, depicting their lives in Villefranche. It’s a beautiful place to spend some time on your trip.

Citadelle Saint-Elme de Villefranche-sur-Mer

Overlooking one of the most beautiful harbors in the world, Villefranche-sur-Mer and its 16th century Citadel, listed as a historic monument, offer you an exceptional and unexpected setting.

In 1543, war broke out on our shores as Barbarossa's 110 galleys landed in Villefranche, raiding, burning and devastating everything in their path. An early example of bastioned fortification, the Citadelle of Villefranche-sur-Mer was built from 1554 onwards by order of Emmanuel-Philibert of Savoy, to plans by Italian engineer Gian Maria Olgiatti, in order to prevent any assault from the sea.

Since Savoie became part of France in 1860, the Citadelle has been used as a military base by the 24th Battalion of Alpine Chasseurs. In 1965, the city council bought the Citadel. Its restoration was undertaken in 1979. In 1981, the city council decided to install the City Hall and a cultural center (Museums, Auditorium, Théâtre de Verdure).

An Insider’s Guide to the Best Things to do in Villefranche-sur-Mer

Plucked straight out of a French fairytale, Villefranche-sur-Mer is a smattering of brightly coloured houses and cobbled streets, opening out onto a deep harbour and the kind of crystal clear waters that the French Riviera is so famous for. Here’s your guide to the best things to do in Villefranche-sur-Mer , as well as what to know before you go.

An Insider's Guide to the Best Things to do in Villefranche-sur-Mer

Introducing Villefranche-sur-Mer

How long do you need in villefranche-sur-mer, wander the old town, rue obscure, church of st michel, chapel of saint pierre, citadel of villefranche-sur-mer (saint elme citadel), villefranche-sur-mer market (marché), beach (plage des bains), le port royal de la darse (royal port), space invader, walk to saint jean cap ferrat, how to visit villefranche-sur-mer, where to stay in villefranche-sur-mer.

Villefranche-sur-Mer looks like something straight out of a pastel hued dream. From the moment you step off the train at the town’s chocolate box train station, you’ll discover a delightful assortment of candy coloured houses, all grouped together in a haphazard way around a medieval church and azure-blue port.

If you want to discover all that Villefrance-sur-Mer has to offer, you’ll need to set aside around half a day, and longer if you plan to enter the museums, relax on the beach, and spend a leisurely lunch à la française.

I visited on an overcast day in late February and was blown away by the sheer beauty of this town of 5000 in the French region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. Villefranche-sur-Mer has one of the deepest harbours along the French Riviera, meaning that there are almost always large ships passing by.

Villefranche-sur-Mer

And while the Côte d-Azur is already famed for its temperate climate, Villefranche-sur-Mer is even milder than other towns in the region thanks to its enviable position protected by the high cliffs surrounding it and the narrowness of its harbour.

Thanks to its sheer beauty, the town has been used as a source of inspiration for many writers, artists, and musicians over the years. Indeed, Jean Cocteau once called Villefranche-sur-Mer “a source of myth and inspiration,” while the Rolling Stones Recorded their   Exile on Mainstreet  album there.

When wadnering the streets, it’s not hard to see why so many directors have chosen to film movies here. Notable ones you may have heard of include Alfred Hitchcock’s  To Catch a Thief  and  Dirty Rotten Scoundrels .

As I sat in Place Amélie Pollonais, a square in the heart of town, I savoured an allongé (Americano- here’s my French coffee guide ) , read my book, and watched the pigeons cooed around the square, looking for leftover crumbs from previous diners. It was the most perfect moment, watching the world go by, with the azure blue sea in the distance.

Villefranche-sur-Mer

As it’s pretty small, you can honestly see most of Villefranche-sur-Mer over the course of a couple of hours. However, if you wish to see all of the attractions, spend time relaxing in the square, and maybe even visiting the beach, you’ll want a full day to soak up all of this dreamy destination’s charms.

Best things to do in Villefranche-sur-Mer

Truth be told, one of the greatest things to do in Villefranche-sur-Mer is to explore the maze of cobbled streets and colourful homes and allow the town to reveal itself to you. Almost every turn boasts an Instagram-worthy snap. Many buildings date all the way back to the Middle Ages, which only adds to the charm.

Villefranche-sur-Mer old town

While wandering through town, you’ll likely come across Rue Obscure. This 13th-century tunnel goes under the houses in the heart of town and is dimly lit. Originally constructed in 1260 for military purposes, so as to allow soldiers to get easily through the town, today the tunnel is dimly lit and is roughly 430 foot long.

rue obscure

The imposing bell tower of the St Michel church dates back to the 18th-century and is a beautiful example of Baroque architecture. Free to visit and enter inside, it merits a closer look thanks to its intricately carved altar and beautifully painted ceilings.

Located close to the water, the chapel of Saint Pierre is somewhat of a hidden gem of Villefranche-sur-Mer. Its ornate exterior was designed by artist Jean Cocteau (who lived in nearby Menton ) and entrance inside costs €3. The chapel is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

One of the most imposing places to visit is the trapezoid-shaped citadel, which dates all the way back to the 16th-century and once protected the town from would-be invaders and marauders.

Over the years, the citadel has had many different functions, including as barracks by the Russians in the 1850s and as a US Naval Base between 1945 and 1962. Today the citadel is owned by the city and houses a museum dedicated to art and sculptures.

Citadel of Villefranche-sur-Mer (Saint Elme citadel)

If you happen to be in town on a Wednesday or Sunday morning, then you can visit the twice weekly market, which takes place every Saturday morning on promenade de l’Octroi. There are a variety of delicious goodies for sale, including fresh fruits, vegetables, local cheeses, and even French butter .

Unlike some of the more pebbled beaches elsewhere on the French Riviera, the Plage des Marinieres (Beach of the Sailors) is much sandier, making it easier to relax on. Just bring a towel and plenty of suncream as there isn’t much shade nearby.

The beach is absolutely enormous, and stretches quite far, meaning that it’s never too difficult to find a spot to sunbathe or relax, even during the busier months of the year.

Located directly below the citadel, the lovely Port Royal was once used to dock Royal ships and is now a quiet and peaceful spot in town where boats bob in the water and few tourist venture to. At the end of the port, there is a small red and white lighthouse.

Le Port Royal de la Darse (Royal Port)

One of the more surprising discoveries of a visit to Villefranche-sur-Mer is that it is actually where you can find some Space Invaders. If you’ve ever been to Paris, then no doubt you’ve probably spotted a fair amount of street art.

Well, one of the most prevalent artists in the city  (who also covers plenty of other spots across the world)  is that of Invader, an anonymous artist who is famed for his street side mosaics. In Paris, over 1400 of his works can be found in varying shapes and sizes.

From full sized mosaics that cover an entire block to smaller pieces the size of your hand that can only be spied by those with the most eagle of eyes, there’s even a Pokemon-style app called ‘Flash Invaders’ where you can take photos of the mosaics you find and keep a record of how many you’ve found. In The French Riviera, there are 40 Invaders to find, scattered along the coastline.

villefranche sur mer space invader

If you are up for a bit of a walk, then it’s perfectly possible to walk all the way from Villefranche-sur-Mer to the next villages along, Beaulieu-sur-Mer and Saint Jean Cap Ferrat. For more detailed instructions for the walk, you can use Google maps or alternatively head to the tourist office for a larger map of the area.

sea path villefranche sur mer

The easiest way to get to Villefranche-sur-Mer is to take a direct train from Nice-Ville if you’re staying in Nice (making it one of the best day trips from Nice ) or by taking the train from Menton if your accommodation happens to be there.

Another option from Nice is to take the #100 from the Old Port of Nice. Tickets cost just a few euros and can be purchased directly from the driver. Just be sure to validate your ticket upon entry to the bus in the machine, otherwise you could be fined as your ticket won’t be seen as valid.

The train station is less than a ten minute walk from the centre of town and looks like something straight out of a movie and is a deep red hue that contrasts wonderfully with the azure blue ocean. Directly opposite the station is where the main beach of the town lies.

Villefranche-sur-Mer gare maritime

On the walk from the train station to the town, you’ll already be introduced to the candy hued tones that make up the most colourful town on the French Riviera. The pleasant walk is set alongside the water and takes under ten minutes.

The point is, there’s one single train line which runs up and down the French Riviera, serving numerous quaint towns and villages en route. If a charming seaside town with all the charm of a Wes Anderson film seems right up your street, then you can even plan to stay in Villefranche-sur-Mer for several days.

There is a tourist office on the fringes of the old town, the other side of Villefranche-sur-Mer from the train station. Open throughout the week, you can go in and get leaflets about activities in the surrounding area, as well as a handy walking map for Villefranche-sur-Mer itself.

 Villefranche-sur-Mer seen from a distance

Those looking to get away from it all need to look no further than Villefranche-sur-Mer. The brightly coloured settlement is like something of a vivid dream and the smattering of cafés spilling out onto the street around town make for a quintessentially French getaway. Here are some of the best places to stay in Villefranche-sur-Mer:

Villefranche Cruise Port Guide | 8 Amazing Things To Do In Port

Nice Port Villefrance Cruise Port, France

Welcome to Villefranche cruise port, France! (Post updated: March 2024)

Villefranche-sur-Mer is a small commune and a village located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region on the French Riviera, in the southeast of France. Villefranche is the main cruise port for Nice as the Bay of Villefranche has a deep natural harbour that provides safe anchorage for large cruise vessels. Due to its proximity to Nice, Monaco, Monte Carlo, Cannes, Eze and St. Paul de Vence, Villefranche is one of the major stops in the Mediterranean cruise itineraries. In this article, read about:

  • Villefranche cruise port (Villefranche cruise terminal, getting around, useful tips)
  • 8 best things to do in the port of Villefranche (including shore excursions to Nice, Cannes, Monaco & Monte Carlo, Eze, St. Paul de Vence, Antibes and Grasse).

Villefranche Cruise Port

There are no docking facilities in the Villefranche port of call. Cruise ships anchor in the deep bay and use tender boats to transfer the cruise passengers ashore. The tender ride lasts around 10 minutes each way and the whole tendering operation is organized by the cruise ship and port authorities.

The tenders will drop you off at a small Port de la Santé marina, where you’ll find a small terminal building with a tourist information desk, security screening facilities and restrooms.

The shore excursions’ meeting location is usually in front of the terminal building, however, always make sure you check the instructions on your tour ticket. The parking for tour buses is located only a few minutes walk from the terminal building, across the parking lot for cars, by the entrance to La Citadelle (you’ll see the wall across the parking, head in that direction and after a few minutes’ uphill walk you’ll see the buses). The center of Villefranche is located right outside the terminal building (you need to cross the street and walk uphill to reach it).

Port de la Sante marina, Villefranche cruise port

Smaller cruise vessels (with LOA length under 180 meters/590 ft) dock in Nice Harbour (Port de Nice – Port Lympia), approximately a 30-minute walk from Nice Old Town. Free shuttle buses to the downtown are usually provided. Around the port area, you can find cafes, bars, currency exchange, a tourist information desk and other services.

Getting Around Villefranche Nice

  • Villefranche cruise ship terminal is wheelchair-accessible, however, wheelchair users and guests with walking difficulties may find it difficult to walk around the village as Villefranche is very steep and hilly.
  • Right outside the terminal building, there are a few cafes and places to buy souvenirs.
  • The distance between Nice downtown and the Villefranche cruise terminal is approximately 6.5 km/4 miles (a 15-20-minute drive, depending on the traffic).
  • The distance between Port Villefranche and Monaco and Monte Carlo is 14.5 km/9 miles (a 25-minute drive), Cannes is 40 km/25 miles (a 1-hour drive), the village of Èze is 8 km/5 miles (a 15-minute drive) and St.Paul de Vence is 26 km/16 miles (a 50-minute drive).
  • Villefranche-sur-Mer train station is located approximately 600 meters (less than a 10-minute walk) from the terminal building. Upon exiting the building, turn right and climb the stairway parallel to the Promenade des Marinières. At the top, above the beach, you’ll see the train station. If you have difficulties, look for the SNCF (France’s national railway company) sign.
  • Trains to Nice operate every 15 minutes and the ride takes around 10 minutes each way. In Nice, get off at Nice-Ville train station and then walk toward Old Nice (Nice old town) via Avenue Jean Médecin for about 20 minutes.
  • Trains to Monaco-Monte Carlo run two or more times per hour and the ride takes 15 minutes each way.
  • Trains to Cannes also operate several times per hour and the ride lasts around 50 minutes each way.
  • You can check the itineraries, timetables and additional information on SNCF’s official website https://www.sncf.com/en
  • Alternatively, you can take bus 15 from Octroi bus station (located 500 m from the Villefranche terminal building) to Port Lympia, Nice. The buses run every 20 minutes and the ride takes the same, around 20 minutes each way. For Cannes and Monte Carlo, it’s much more convenient to take a train.
  • The currency in France is EURO (€). Local currency and credit cards are widely accepted.
  • Nice Airport is located 14 km/9 miles (a 30-minute drive) from Villefranche port.

8 Best Things to Do in Villefranche Cruise Port

When in Villefranche, the majority of cruise passengers book shore excursions or independently explore Cote d’Azur’s popular tourist destinations such as Nice, Monaco and Cannes. 1. Villefranche-sur-Mer

If you decide to stay in the port, there are a few things you can do. Villefranche is a beautiful and charming place worth a visit, however, be ready to walk on inclines and uneven surfaces as the town is quite hilly.

One of the main landmarks is the Citadel (La Citadelle), located across from the cruise terminal building. The 16th-century Citadel today houses the Town Hall, a few small art galleries and museums (free of charge), an open-air theater and a sculpture garden that offers wonderful views of the harbour.

Villefranche Port, France

Another landmark is Chapelle Saint-Pierre (Saint Peter’s Chapel) which you’ll find on your right upon leaving the terminal building. The chapel dates back to the 16th century and is famous for Jean Cocteau’s murals depicting the life of the saint and local fishermen.

While there, you can also visit the 18th century Baroque Église Saint-Michel (Saint Michael’s Church) located in the heart of the old town, the old harbour of  la Darse with its colorful marina, Rue Obscure or “Dark Street” – a passageway under the harbour front houses which dates back to the 13th century, or a beautiful Plage Villefranche-sur-Mer . When exploring Villefranche-sur-Mer, make sure you wear comfortable shoes.

It takes around 15-20 minutes’ drive to reach Nice from Villefranche-sur-Mer. The mesmerizing capital of the French Riviera sits on the pebbly shores of the Baie des Anges (“Bay of the Angels”) and overlooks the Mediterranean Sea.

Nice takes a few days to visit, however, if you travel by cruise ship there are a few attractions not to be missed. One of them is Promenade des Anglais which extends 7 km (4 miles) along the coast, named after the English aristocracy that used to spend winters here in the second half of the 18th century, admiring the stunning coastal panorama.

This beautiful seafront boulevard is lined with palm trees, beaches, shops, upscale restaurants and elegant palaces including the 5-star Le Negresco Hotel dating from 1912, Palais de la Méditerranée that nowadays houses Hyatt Regency hotel, the 18th-century Opéra de Nice and others.

I Love Nice sign, Nice, French Riviera

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many wealthy foreigners came to Nice from different parts of Europe and built numerous buildings, grand houses and palaces in a beautiful Belle Epoque architectural style.

Place Masséna is the main square of Nice, with its lavish fountains ( Fontaine Miroir d’Eau and Fontaine du Soleil ) and elegant neoclassical buildings. This vast 18th-century square is situated a few minutes walk from the Promenade des Anglais and is surrounded by shops, cafes, parks and gardens ( Promenade du Paillon ).

Place Masséna, Nice

The eastern part of Nice is known as Old Nice (Nice Old Town or Vieille Ville ), an area of winding narrow streets packed with colorful markets, tiny squares, eateries, shops and buildings featuring Sardinian architectural style. The old town area is mostly pedestrian (zone piétonne) and the most popular attraction here is Cours Saleya which runs parallel to Promenade des Anglais. This large square hosts a flower, vegetable, arts and crafts market and is filled with typically French cafes offering fresh fruits and pastries.

Cours Saleya, Nice

In this famous quarter, you’ll also find palaces including Palais de la Préfecture and Palais Lascaris , Nice Cathedral , historic churches and museums such as Musée du Palais Lascaris and Museum of Photography Charles Nègre .

A little bit outside the Old Nice, you can visit  Musée Masséna and Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nice (art museums) or Marc Chagall National Museum and Musée Matisse , both located a 10-minute drive from the Nice old town.

St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral dating from the 19th century and Basilique Notre-Dame de l’Assomption are two marvelous religious landmarks not to be missed. Old Port of Nice is located next to the old town and is mainly used by yachts and pleasure boats.

2. Monaco and Monte Carlo

Monaco is located approximately 15 km/9 miles (a 30-minute drive) east of Villefranche-sur-Mer. Officially known as the Principality of Monaco, it is a sovereign city-state located on the French Riviera and the second-smallest sovereign state in the world after Vatican City. Monaco is less than one square mile in size and is widely recognized as one of the most expensive and wealthiest places in the world with the highest population of millionaires and billionaires.

Monaco City (Monaco-Ville) is one of the four traditional quarters of Monaco together with La Condamine, Monte Carlo, and Fontvieille. Made up of quiet pedestrian streets, Monaco City is the historic heart of Monaco located on a rocky promontory extending into the Mediterranean, nicknamed the Rock of Monaco (or simply “The Rock”).

Monaco City holds most of the country’s political and judicial institutions including the Prince’s Palace of Monaco (Le Palais des Princes de Monaco), Monaco Town Hall, Palace of Justice, Ministry of State (government office), National Council (parliament of Monaco) and others.

Le Palais des Princes de Monaco

Shore excursions going to Monaco normally include a visit to Monaco City as the majority of historic landmarks and attractions are located there. Monaco City is a very touristy place packed with cafes, eateries and souvenir shops. Some of the main attractions are:

  • Prince’s Palace of Monaco – The official residence of the Sovereign Prince of Monaco. The current sovereign prince of Monaco and head of the House of Grimaldi is Albert II , the son of Prince Rainier III and Grace Kelly. The changing of the guard occurs every day outside the Palace at 11:55 am.
  • Saint Nicholas Cathedral (aka the  Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and Monaco Cathedral ) – Dating back to the 19th century, this magnificent church contains the remains of many members of the Grimaldi dynasty which has ruled Monaco, with a few interruptions, from the 13th century to present.
  • Oceanographic Museum of Monaco –  Founded in 1910 by navigator and oceanographer Prince Albert I, this impressive museum is dedicated to marine sciences and houses exhibitions and an aquarium with over 6000 species of sea flora and fauna.
  • Jardins de Saint-Martin (St Martin Gardens) – A beautiful peaceful park located next to the Oceanographic Museum, with Mediterranean flora, sculptures and fountains.

Note that the majority of the streets in Monaco City are narrow and cobblestone and people with walking difficulties/wheelchair users may find it difficult to navigate as there are many steep and uneven surfaces.

Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo is the principal residential and resort area of Monaco with its world-famous Monte Carlo Casino , an upscale gambling and entertainment complex housed in the lavish Beaux-Arts building. The building dominates Casino Square (Place du Casino) and also houses Opéra de Monte-Carlo and  the Ballets de Monte-Carlo offices. The square is surrounded by exclusive restaurants and ornate buildings including the stunning  Hotel de Paris Monte-Carlo .

You can visit the atrium of the casino, Salle Renaissance and a slot machine room for free, without showing ID and with no dress code required. However, if you wish to have a guided tour or play at the casino, the entrance fee and a smart dress code are required. You must be over 18 to join the guided tour or play.

Casino Square and Monte Carlo Casino

In this area, you’ll also find luxury-label designer fashion stores including Dior, Chanel, Cartier, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and others. Monte Carlo is also host to most of the Circuit de Monaco , on which the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix takes place, as well as several other sporting and fashion events.

Useful info :

  • If you are visiting Monaco and Monte Carlo on a guided tour, bear in mind that buses will park in underground parking as it’s not allowed to access the center of Monaco City and Monte Carlo by bus (Monaco City is mainly a pedestrian zone, while the center of Monte Carlo can only be accessed by a car or a small van).
  • Monaco City is very hilly, except for the vast square where the Prince’s Palace is located. There may be up to a 15-20 minute walk to reach the square from the underground parking (elevators are available to the Oceanographic Museum, and then from there you need to walk). The area around Monte Carlo Casino is mostly flat and wheelchair-accessible.

Renowned for hosting the annual Cannes Film Festival, Cannes is a popular resort town on the French Riviera and another paradise destination for the rich and famous, located 40 km/25 miles (a 1-hour drive) southwest of Villefranche-sur-Mer.

Cannes is famous for its Promenade de la Croisette (Boulevard de la Croisette) which starts at the Cannes harbour (Cannes Old Port – Vieux Port de Cannes) and extends 2 km along the coastline until the end of Croisette Beach.

The iconic boulevard is lined with high-end stores, expensive shops, upscale restaurants and grandiose luxurious hotels such as InterContinental Carlton Cannes, Hotel Barrière Le Majestic Cannes, Hôtel Martinez and JW Marriott Cannes.

Besides the world-famous La Croisette and Cannes’ prestigious international reputation, the city has a medieval old quarter known as Le Suquet , centered around Rue Saint Antoine and Rue du Suquet filled with restaurants and cafes. Le Suquet is located right across the harbour and if you continue to climb the winding cobbled streets you’ll reach Château de la Castre from where you can enjoy the spectacular view of the Bay of Cannes and the city.

Here, on the top of the old town, you’ll find the remains of the medieval fortified castle that nowadays houses the Musée des explorations du monde (art and ethnography museum), as well as a 17th-century Gothic stone church Église Notre-Dame d’Espérance with its iconic clock tower. At the bottom of Le Suquet, you’ll find Marché Forville – the indoor market where you can find flowers and fresh produce including fruits, vegetables, seafood, meats, cheeses and so much more.

Cannes is partially wheelchair-accessible. La Promenade de la Croisette is flat and easy to navigate, however, Le Suquet historic quarter is made up of steep cobbled streets and a series of staircases.
