Spent many years tubing here. My fondest memories forever cherished.

After canoeing down the Guadalupe and having water moccasins follow us I wasn’t really interested in going back. BUT I LIVED THERE AND STILL CONSIDER TEXAS HOME. AND WOULD MOVE BACK ANYDAY.

17 Awesome Things to do in Historic Gruene, Texas

Located in the Texas Hill Country, exactly midway between Austin and San Antonio, you will find a slice of Texas’ past: the Gruene Dance Hall.

This is Texas’ oldest dance hall and it has a very unique history.

Gruene, Texas (pronounced Green, Texas) was a former German town in Comal County.

Gruene Texas is especially charming in the holiday season

It rose to prominence in the second half of the 19th century as a cotton-producing center.

Gradually, the town fell into decline and was incorporated into the city of New Braunfels.

Fun fact: There is no city of Gruene, Texas.

Most visitors are surprised to find that the Gruene Texas dance hall is located on Gruene Road in New Braunfels!

Oldest dance hall in Texas in Historic Gruene

Today, Gruene is one of the best small towns to visit in Texas to experience German heritage and architecture.

History of Gruene, Texas

The primary reason for Gruene’s charm is its storied history which goes back to the pre-Civil War era.

German settlers in the Texas Hill Country established New Braunfels in the 1840s.

However, as the city grew, land became scarce and settlers looked outside of the city to buy new land.

Original Gruene Mercantile building in historic Downtown

A German town

Ernst Gruene, a German immigrant who arrived in New Braunfels in 1845, purchased land on the banks of the Guadalupe.

He built the first home here in the traditional Fachwerkhaus style of architecture of Germany.

Gruene’s son, Henry Gruene, planted cotton and built several buildings in the area including the Gruene Family Home.

Other settlers soon moved there and thus, the little town of Gruene was established.

Be sure to read exhibits in Historic Downtown Gruene that narrate the history of the area

It was named after the founding Gruene family.

At its heydey, Gruene had several buildings and two railroad stations.

It had its own school, bank, dance hall, grist mill, and three large cotton gins.

Gruene was a significant cotton-producing and shipping center.

It was also an important stagecoach stop between San Antonio and Austin in the 1880s.

The decline

However, the town’s prosperity was short-lived.

The first cotton gin burned down to the ground in a fire in 1922.

The boll weevil beetle that devastated the cotton industry in the southern states affected Gruene too.

Then the Great Depression came and Gruene was a ghost town by 1950.

Today the historic buildings in Gruene are excellently preserved

And there the story of Gruene history might have ended; it was forgotten for about 20 years…

….until the restoration of the historic structures began in the 1970s.

Today the historic small town is a part of New Braunfels and has become a prominent tourist destination in Texas.

25 Best Things To Do In Gruene TX For A Weekend Getaway

Are you planning a trip to Gruene TX sometime soon? If not, you should! This little historic town is absolutely PACKED with charm and character! It's home to the oldest dance hall in Texas and a bunch of adorable shops and restaurants. I've lived in Texas my whole life and I've made plenty of trips to Gruene. I'll share some of the best things to do in Gruene TX for your next weekend getaway.

Gruene Hall

The town of Gruene is pretty small. Actually, you'll probably be shocked at just how tiny it is when you arrive. For as much press and publicity as it gets, Gruene Historic District sure is a teeny little place. But there's power in personality, and Gruene definitely isn't lacking there!

From the river culture to the music scene (psst: there's more than one good music venue here!) to my own guide to the best restaurants in Gruene to the adorable bars, here are the best things to do in Gruene, TX.

A Brief (Fun) History Lesson

Super short and fun lesson, ok y'all?

Gruene is OLD ! I mean, by Texas standards.

German farmers settled in the 1840s to grow and pick cotton.

Ernst Gruene and his sons built the first house there (it still exists and you can book a room in it!!) and a frame house (which is now an adorable little shop!).

A Cotton Gin was built and the town was basically booming, all the way to the 1900s.

Gruene General Store

And then...decline.

A particular species of beetles (boll weevil) killed the cotton industry in the 1920s. And the Great Depression wasn't a huge help, either.

It was pretty much a ghost town for the next 50 years.

But then... ! In the 1970s, thanks to a UT architecture student, some businesspeople, and some good ol' PR , the town of Gruene had a revival. The old buildings were restored and renovated, and word started spreading about this adorable historic town in the Texas hill country.

Gruene TX

Honestly, here's exactly what to do in Gruene

I'll share more details below, but here's a (very quick) synopsis of the best things to do in Gruene.

The Barn Gruene TX

It's a tiny town. You could be fine just spending one day here, or maybe an overnight stay (so you can stay up late, go to the dance hall, crash somewhere fun, and eat brunch the next day.)

Gristmill River Restaurant

There are really only 4 main things that visitors love to do in Gruene:

  • See a concert at Historic Gruene Hall. It's the oldest dance hall in Texas and some pretty legendary people play at this no-air-conditioning music venue.
  • Browse the shops in the historic district. It really is so darling.
  • Eat and drink at the Gruene TX restaurants and bars.
  • Float the river.

That's really about it! Of course, I have plenty of recommendations for the best restaurants and unique places to stay. For more details and specifics, read on!

5 Insider Tips For Visiting Gruene, TX

Like I mentioned, it's teeeeeny little place and it's absolutely packed with charm. But there's not a whole lot to know about this place (unlike planning a trip to, say, NYC or Chicago.) However, there are a few things that you should know before you visit Gruene:

1. Gruene isn't a city.

It's actually just a historic district within New Braunfels . So when you're looking for establishments and addresses, everything will be listed as "New Braunfels, TX" on the address.

Gruene TX

It's a town within the city of New Braunfels. So if you're looking for more fun things to do in Gruene TX, you could easily go to Landa Park or do any of these New Braunfels activities because they're all nearby.

2. You could walk the entire downtown in 5 minutes.

The entire town of Gruene is just 25 acres! When you're browsing the antique shops and restaurants in the historic downtown, you'll probably spend a few hours walking around.

But if you're walking with purpose from one side to the other, you could cover the entire historic downtown district at Gruene Road and Hunter Roads in about 5 minutes. Yup!

Gruene TX

3. Avoid the weekends, if you can.

Try to go to Gruene on the weekdays and avoid a Friday or Saturday trip. This is true for any tourist town or destination , but it's especially true for little-bitty Gruene Texas.

Since this town is so small, it doesn't have a lot of space for the weekend crowds...and it gets packed . (Ha - have we established that Gruene is small yet?)

4. It's a good pit stop on the way to/from another Texas destination.

If you're driving to/from Austin, Dallas, or San Antonio, you're going to be going up or down I35. Gruene is an excellent place to add into your trip because it's also on I35!

It's not the type of place you'd want to visit and stay for a full week. It's fun for a day trip, or maybe a short weekend, but there's not a lot to do here to fill up more than about 48 hours.

Fickle Pickles

5. You'll get sick of the "Gruene" puns.

Gruene is pronounced "green," and businesses take advantage of that. Gruene Grove. Winery on the Gruene. Gruene Light. The Gruene Door.

THEY JUST DON'T STOP.

Simply embrace it and laugh and know that most establishments will have a "Gruene" pun in the title. I mean, they have to, right?

Gruene Hall

1. See A Show At Gruene Hall

Gruene Hal

Gruene Hall is the oldest dance hall in Texas. Its stage has welcomed George Strait, Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Garth Brooks, and many (many!) other live entertainment icons.

It has live music every single day, including some free shows on the weekdays.

Gruene Hall

Honestly, this is just a must-do bucket list item for every single Texan. The dusty wooden floors, ancient stage, low ceilings, and cash-only bar are the most iconic part of Gruene, TX. You simply can't go to Gruene without going to Gruene Hall!

Gruene Hall stage

In  the afternoons they open the front door and you can wander inside, get a drink at the bar, and see the space. So even if you're just stopping by Gruene for a quick afternoon visit, be sure to at least peek inside and see this piece of Texas history.

2. Tubing with Rockin R River Rides

Rockin' R River Rides

River culture is a whole thing in Gruene. Folks love to float the river in a tube or a raft, or just enjoy a lazy afternoon of river sittin' with an ice cold beer.

The Guadalupe River runs right through the middle of Gruene. In fact, the Guadalupe powered the historic Cotton Gin back in the 1800s!

Rockin R River Rides

Nowadays, you can float the river and enjoy a few hours of sunshine and relaxation. Rockin' R River Rides is the company I typically use. They're consistently good.

As far as all the details, like bringing alcohol or cans on the river, rules about music, what to pack, how long the river ride will last, prices, etc., just check the Rockin R website for the most up-to-date details.

3. Go to the Secret Speakeasy in Gruene

The Gruene Grove

Did you know there's a speakeasy in Gruene? It's really cute! Head to Gruene Grove and they'll direct you toward Goodwins, which is open 7 days a week starting at 7 pm. You can enjoy craft cocktails, bites, and live music.

By the way: Goodwin was actually the original name of Gruene! The town changed names eventually because the Gruene family played such a big part in establishing it.

4. Or...Grab A Meal at Gruene River Grill

Gruene River Grill

If you care more about food than ambiance, I think that Gruene River Grill offers some of the best dining in Gruene. It's been open since 2004, so it doesn't have the same charm as Gristmill River Restaurant. But it has a lively ambiance, a well-rounded menu, and a great staff.

Most people who visit Gruene dine at Gristmill River Restaurant. It's right next to Gruene Hall, so it's convenient. And yes, their onion rings are kind of famous. And the fact that the restaurant is inside an 1878 cotton gin is cool. HOWEVER, as far as quality of food goes, Gruene River Grill surpasses Gristmill.

Try the tri-fecta to start (queso, guac, and roasted salsa) and go for the Gruene chicken enchiladas if you want a bit of Tex Mex while you're in town. Their hand-cut steak is a great choice, too. This isn't a fancy restaurant, but they do a great job in their niche.

5. Go Antique Shopping

Gruene Antique Co

It's pretty much impossible to NOT go to an antique store while you're in Gruene! "Antiquing" for souvenirs and furniture and art and other gems is a huge part of the culture in this little town.

7. Stay at the Gruene Mansion Inn

Gruene Mansion Inn

The Gruene Mansion Inn is the cream of the crop when it comes to adorable bed and breakfasts in this town. It was the original home that Henry B Gruene built when he and his dad were first establishing this town in the 1800s... and now it's been converted into a beautiful inn.

Gruene Mansion Inn

Every room has unique historic touches like clawfoot tubs and handmade furniture. Plus, Gruene Mansion Inn is literally next door to Gruene Hall. You can't get a better location!

For the absolute best place to stay in Gruene, the 1872 Gruene Mansion Inn is your best bet.

8. Listen to Live Music at Gruene Grove

Sure, Gruene Hall is always going to be listed as the best place to listen to live music in Gruene. But Gruene Grove is a close second!

The lively outdoor space is a family-friendly spot with live music, brats, Texas wine, cold beer, and delicious cocktails. (And you already read about their fun downstairs speakeasy, Goodwins...remember?)

This is a casual spot that's good for a last-minute thing to do in Gruene, TX.

9. Olive Oil Tasting At Gruene Olive Tasting Room

Gruene Olive Tasting Room

This is one of the more unique things to do in Gruene, and it's definitely worth it! Stop by the adorable Gruene Olive Tasting Room to taste their olive oil and vinegar on tap. It's a great spot to get Christmas gifts if you're in Gruene during the month of December!

10. Stay At a Bed & Breakfast in Gruene

Gruene River Hotel And Retreat

I already mentioned Gruene Mansion Inn, but there are MANY fantastic little bed & breakfasts in Gruene.

If you're planning an overnight stay in this little town, I recommend booking a fun and unique inn where you can get a good feel for the city.

11. Stop By Old Gruene Market Days

Gruene Antique Co

Old Gruene Market Days are so much fun, and it's worth planning your trip to Gruene around this little weekend!

It features 100 artisans selling handmade items like crafts, food, and art. There's free parking, free entertainment, and lots of great gift ideas!

Old Gruene Market Days happen on the 3rd weekend of the month from February - November, and then on the first weekend of the month in December.

12. Load Up On Fickle Pickles

Fickle Pickles

Hear me out on this one: THESE PICKLES ARE INSANE! I'm not even a "pickle person" and I can't. stop. eating. them.

In fact, a lot of local folks say that they have out-of-town friends and family who request them to buy Fickle Pickles and send them in bulk. So if you're in Gruene, be sure to stop by and enjoy a free sample!

Fickle Pickle

The secret recipe is a bit sweet at start, but then the garlic and chili kicks in and your bite finishes with a bit of spice. The whole thing is insanely satisfying and you'll probably eat your way through a jar in no time at all.

13. Head to The Grapevine Wine Bar

The Grapevine Gruene

The Grapevine is an adorable spot where you can drink wine from 25+ Texas wineries in downtown Gruene and enjoy some live music. It's shaded by dozens of big, magnificent trees and has a sprawling outdoor patio.

The Grapevine Gruene TX

Disclaimer: the Texas wine culture is still evolving, and a lot of wine bars in small Texas towns still feature mostly sweet wines. That's the case here (although it's not 100% sweet wines!) so manage your expectations. If you're used to drinking wine in California or Washington, this isn't the same experience.

14. River Sittin' in the Guadalupe

Gruene TX-2

If you don't feel like floating the river (or you're unable to float the river), how about some river sittin'? Here's how it works: you grab a lawn chair, get a cooler full of beverages, and you sit in the river.

This works especially well if you've booked an Airbnb that backs up to the river. That riverfront access is golden! But if not, you can just look around for public access. Enjoy watching the tubers float down the river while you lounge, cool off, listen to your Spotify playlist, and sip on your beverage of choice.

15. Gruene General Store

Gruene General Store

There are a few original historic buildings in Gruene, and the General Store is one of them! It's a must-see Gruene attraction.

Stop by the soda fountain for a cream soda, or browse the store for gift ideas, nostalgic candy, and the fun goodies.

16. Browse the Boutique Shops

Gruene boutique store

The Gruene GOAT is one of my personal favorite boutiques in Gruene. They just always have something fun and unique! From tees to hats to home goods to mugs with funny phrases, this is a great place to stop by for a souvenir.

Pomegranate is another cute one. It's named after the adorable pomegranate tree in front of the store. They sell mostly women's items, but there are a few things there for the guys and kids, too.

And Barbelles is another popular on. It's full of all sorts of women's clothing and accessories.

17. Rhea's Ice Cream

Rhea's Ice Cream

Rhea's makes the BEST ice cream in Gruene. The small batch artisan ice cream, homemade waffle cones, and freshly-baked cookies and brownies are out-of-this-world insanely delicious.

Rhea's Ice Cream

The menu rotates seasonally, but try the Circus Animal ice cream if it's there when you stop by. Need a dairy free ice cream option in Gruene? They have those, too! The vegan avocado coconut is delish.

18. Make Sure You Go To Uptown Gruene

Gruene TX

A lot of Gruene tourists get "stuck" in the little intersection of Gruene Road and Hunter Road. This makes sense, because it's where the "big" attractions exist, like Gruene Hall, the General Store, Gristmill restaurant, and Gruene Mansion Inn.

But be sure to walk the extra few hundred yards north and arrive at Uptown Gruene! This area is typically a bit less crowded, but it features some unbelievably cool stores, fantastic restaurants, and the only coffee shop in town. Speaking of...

19. Get Coffee at Gruene Coffee Haus

Gruene Coffee Haus

There's one coffee shop in Gruene, and it's adorable. Be sure to swing by Gruene Coffee Haus for a morning (or afternoon!) cup of Joe.

22. Gruene Day Spa

This fun thing to do in Gruene is especially great if you've booked a couples getaway weekend...Gruene has a day spa! They are very popular (book early!) and offer all of the day spa favorites you might expect: massages, facials, waxing, and even prenatal massages.

23. The Gruene Haus

The River Haus

Sure, there are lots of fun boutique shops in Gruene, but this is the only MUST-visit one that I will put on my list. The Gruene Haus is adorable! It's actually the original frame Haus that H.D. Gruene built in the 1870s.

Gruene River Haus

When you walk inside, you can imagine the layout of the house and which rooms used to serve which function. There are all sorts of nooks and crannies that are filled with fun, boutique items to purchase and bring home.

24. Margaritas at Cantina Del Rio

Cantina Del Rio

Everyone loves margaritas! Cantina Del Rio is the most popular spot in Gruene for Tex Mex. It's right next to Gristmill and just a few steps from Gruene Hall, so the location is very convenient.

Disclaimer: Cantina Del Rio is cute, but the Tex Mex food isn't awesome. However, if you're craving a cold margarita on a hot afternoon, Cantina Del Rio fits the bill. And it's pretty hard to mess up a margarita. I just can't wholeheartedly recommend the food here.

25. Rent A Golf Cart And Cruise Around Town

Gruene TX

You definitely do NOT want to try to drive your car around Gruene during the weekends. It gets packed here!

A great alternative is renting a golf cart. They're smaller and can zip around town easily. If you have trouble walking long distances, a golf cart is a fun way to see the town of Gruene.

Gruene Hall bar

When is the best time to visit Gruene?

In the summer! There aren't a lot of things to do here, and floating the river is at the top of the list. I recommend visiting in the earlier part of the summer (May/June) before it gets ridiculously hot.

Where can you park in Gruene?

There are free parking lots all over town. They do tend to fill up on the weekends, which is one more reason to visit on a weekday if you're able. Otherwise, try to arrive early on a Saturday to snag one of those parking spots. Or leave your car at your airbnb or bed & breakfast and walk into the historic district.

How to pronounce Gruene?

Gruene TX

Why is Gruene Hall famous?

Gruene Hall is famous because it's the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas.

The list of people who have performed there is pretty impressive. And once you visit, you'll be even more impressed by the list of names...because this is a no-frills place! The tin-roof building is only about 6,000 square feet. It has no air conditioning, just side-flaps on the sides and lots of fans to keep it cool. It really does feel like a dance hall from the 1800s.

Gruene TX

What river runs through Gruene?

The Guadalupe. Although, technically, Gruene is a town within the city of New Braunfels, and the Comal River also runs through New Braunfels. You can float on either the Guadalupe or the Comal.

Gruene, Texas: Everything You Need to Know Before You Visit

I’ve lived in Central Texas for 15 years, and I can’t even count the number of times I’ve been to Gruene. In fact, it was one of the first places my now husband and I went when we were dating. We even celebrated in Gruene the day we got engaged. Now it’s a regular hang-out spot for us.

But if you’ve never visited the tiny town-inside-a-town, you may not know what to expect. Hopefully this little guide will help you get to Gruene – fully prepared for an amazing time. And if you have any other questions, feel free to drop them in the comments (I read them all!) or reach out to me on Instagram @texas.discoveries

Where is Gruene, Texas?

A lot of people think Gruene is its own city (which it used to be…. like 100 years ago), but it’s really just a small historic district inside the New Braunfels city limits. It’s small. Quaint even. But it’s not something that will fill up a whole weekend’s worth of activity (unless you want to do the same thing multiple times, which, hey, you do you.)

screenshot of a map of New Braunfels city limits showing where is Gruene, Texas. Overlayed text reads: "Gruene is pretty much just this little dot"

The photo above outlines New Braunfels city limits with a red dotted line. As you can see, Gruene is inside New Braunfels city limits. If you want to make a full weekend (or week!) out of it, there are tons of things to do in New Braunfels too. If you’re here in November, definitely check out Wurstfest .

What is Gruene Known For?

Likely the thing Gruene is most known for is Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas (more on Gruene Hall below). But tons of people flock to Gruene every year for more than that. Gruene is known for its food, shopping, and live music.

photo of the gruene water tower taken from The Grapevine patio

What Language is Gruene?

Gruene is a German family name. The town was named after Henry Gruene. You’ll see H.D. Gruene on a few of the buildings.

How Do You Pronounce Gruene?

Gruene is pronounced “Green,” like the color. I know it doesn’t make sense. Just go with it. If you call it Groo-wen, groon, or, my personal favorite “groo-weenie,” everyone will know you’re a tourist. (Which is ok if you don’t mind it.)

What is Gruene Market Days?

Gruene Market Days is a collection of local artisans and crafters, and it takes place on the third weekend of every month. Every tent you peek into reveals someone’s passion project, their labor of love. Whether it’s handcrafted jewelry, unique home décor, or quirky knick-knacks, there’s always something new to discover.

Is Gruene Kid-Friendly?

We bring our kids to Gruene all the time. There isn’t a playground (a missed opportunity, in my opinion), but there are a few open grassy areas, and the General Store has delicious ice cream for a treat.

My kids always like hearing the live music (the Grapevine often has someone playing, as does The Gruene Grove).

And if you come at Christmastime, you should definitely snag a photo with Cowboy Kringle. You used to be able to walk up but the lines were… dare I say… f&%#ing ridiculous. Now you have to reserve a spot WELL in advance. I’m talking months here, guys. So if you’re planning ahead, you can get a really cool Texas Christmas photo.

Cowboy Kringle photo in Gruene, Texas

And the Pony Express ride happens around Christmastime too. So your kids will probably enjoy that.

Gruene Restaurants

There are a ton of restaurants in Gruene, and my recommendations would generally be based on what you’re looking for.

Want a river view? You have two options: Gristmill and Gruene River Grill. Both have decent food (Gruene River Grill has better food, in my opinion), but Gristmill is a haven for tourists. It gets CROWDED there. We’re talking hours-long waittimes…. even in the rain. It’s a popular spot though, so if you just need to check it off your bucket list, this is the place for you.

Gruene River Grill has very similar food and atmosphere, and there’s sometimes a wait here too. I really like their chicken fajita salad though (in the pic below). It’s one of my favorites.

couple eating lunch at Gruene River Grill

Looking for the Best Food? I’d suggest The Birdhouse or The Gruene Door (which is technically not in Gruene… but it’s super close). I also like Mozie’s for something low-key.

There are also two Mexican restaurants in Gruene – Cantina del Rio and Adobe Verde. Cantina del Rio has amazing happy hour specials on their margaritas, and people really like their burgers too.

If you’re in Gruene with kids, Adobe Verde might be your best choice out of everything. They have a playground, so you can enjoy a margarita while your kids get some energy out. A win-win for everyone.

Things to Do in Gruene

There are lots of places to eat while you’re here. Check our recommendations for the best restaurants in Gruene.

(FYI none of them serve breakfast that I know of, so if you’re not at a bed & breakfast, take a five-minute drive and check out Fork & Spoon for the best breakfast in New Braunfels.)

Gruene has you covered for lunch, dinner, and snacks though.

Wine and beer is aplenty in Gruene. There are also plenty of restaurants with full bars.

Hang out at The Grapevine, which has wine by the glass and the bottle. If you (or someone you’re with) isn’t into wine, they also have craft beer on tap.

Grab a beer and listen to live music at Gruene Hall (they accept credit cards now!) or head to The Gruene Grove if you want a full bar and a chill outdoor atmosphere.

Live Music:

On the weekends (especially in the summertime), you’ll be able to enjoy live music almost anywhere in Gruene. Gruene Hall is a given, but The Grapevine, The Gruene Grove, and The Gruene Light Bar also have live music pretty regularly. Some of the restaurants do too.

There are so many shops in Gruene. Whether you want antiques, boutique items, skincare, gag gifts, clothing, or something super unique, the shops in Gruene probably have what you want. I do a lot of my Christmas shopping here.

Rent a tube (or a kayak, or a paddleboard) at Rockin’ R and enjoy a float down the Guadalupe. Rockin’ R has a shuttle to bring you back around when you’ve floated the whole way. If it’s a cooler day (or if you just don’t want to tube), it’s nice to just walk down to the river to take a look at it. People often stand on the bridge (there’s a sidewalk) to get a good view.

If you’re looking for photo ops in Gruene, well, you have to get a classic picture in front of Gruene Hall. You can also get some cool chic/rustic looking photos in the grassy area between the hat shop and The Pomegranate (my favorite store). You’ll also want to grab some photos by the river (a lot of people walk down to the river and take photos with their feet in the water). And don’t forget to snap a pic of the Gruene water tower!

Gruene Hall

Why is gruene hall famous.

Gruene Hall is the oldest dance hall in Texas, and you can enjoy live music here every single day at nearly all times of the day. The best thing? Most of the time it’s free. (Sometimes some well-known people play here… then it’s not so free. But ticket prices are always reasonable, and you’ll enjoy the small venue – there’s not a bad seat in the house.)

Check their events calendar to stay up to date on everything that’s happening at Gruene Hall.

posing for a photo inside Gruene Hall

Does Gruene Hall Serve Alcohol?

Yes! It’s beer and wine only though. And it used to be cash only, but they started taking cards in 2023.

Hotels in Gruene

There are two hotels in Gruene: the Gruene River Inn and the Gruene River Hotel and Retreat. They both have some rooms that overlook the Guadalupe River, and they both have extremely good ratings. The Gruene River Hotel and Retreat is more in the middle of everything. You’ll have to do a tiny bit of extra walking if you stay at the Gruene River Inn. But not much.

There are also a number of bed & breakfasts in Gruene (and on the outskirts).

The Gruene Mansion Inn is in a great location, and if you’re open to a (very short) drive, I highly recommend Gruene B&B .

If you’d like to save a little money and are willing to drive just a teeny bit further, there are plenty of hotels in the New Braunfels area. There are a few at Freiheit (another great spot you can enjoy!) and near I35 as well.

How Far is Gruene …

From Austin?

If you’re in downtown Austin, it will take you about 50 minutes to get to Gruene… if there’s no traffic… but there will probably traffic…

From San Antonio?

It takes about 40 minutes to get to Gruene from downtown San Antonio. Again, that’s without traffic. If you’re on the north side of San Antonio, it might only be 25-30 minutes.

From Houston?

The drive from downtown Houston to Gruene takes just under 3 hours.

From Fredericksburg?

Planning a trip to Fredericksburg? It’s only about 1 hour and 20 minutes from Gruene! Visit them both while you’re in Central Texas.

Don’t try to turn left off New Braunfels St

There is a one-way road that forks off of Hunter Road; it’s called New Braunfels Street, and traffic moves toward Gruene (toward the river).

First tip… don’t drive the wrong way on this road.

Second tip… please don’t try to turn left. Ever. But especially in the middle of the summer on a weekend when the traffic is already completely backed up down the hill.

If you’ve accidentally turned onto New Braunfels St, please just take your losses and drive down the hill and get back in the line of traffic to get back into Gruene. Otherwise you (and 28 cars behind you, who are probably trying to turn right) will be waiting at the stop sign until your vacation is practically over.

Directing traffic

In the busy season, there is almost always a police officer directing traffic. If you’re driving through, please be nice to this person. If you’re walking, please pay attention. They’re there to help pedestrians. Don’t cross the street all willy-nilly. Wait until they direct you to go.

Be careful walking around

I swear, people go to Gruene and think they can wander around haphazardly and suffer no consequences. I mean, I know you’ve been drinking, but for goodness sakes, Hunter Road is actually a main thoroughfare for locals. Don’t just step out into traffic like you’re Mulan’s grandma with a lucky cricket or something.

There are so many parked cars up and down the road, it’s actually really difficult to see you before you pop out. Be safe.

Parking in Gruene

You really shouldn’t have much trouble parking. Gruene’s parking lot (if you can call it that… it’s more like a giant field) is huge. You may have to park pretty far back if you come on a busy day, but it’s unlikely that you won’t find parking at all.

If it’s REALLY busy and you can’t find parking, Rockin R’ sometimes has their lot open with a shuttle service.

That’s all! I think I covered everything. If you have any questions that I didn’t answer about Gruene, drop a comment below. I’ll do my best to get back to you as soon as possible!

Hope to see you in Gruene soon!

How To Spend A Perfect Day In Charming Gruene, Texas

visit gruene texas

  • Destinations
  • New Braunfels
  • Texas Hill Country
  • United States

Although many folks think Gruene (pronounced “green”) is a town in Texas, it’s not. Formed by German settlers in the mid-1840s, Gruene, Texas, became a thriving cotton mill town for many years, but in the early 1920s, that all came to a halt after the death of the last Gruene son, the boll weevil epidemic, and the Depression. In 1974, the town was taken over by New Braunfels and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Gruene is a thriving part of New Braunfels, with rich history, original historic buildings, and a quaint atmosphere. But you would not be wrong calling it Gruene, Texas — I still do.

Situated between Austin and San Antonio, Gruene makes a wonderful day trip to the country under an hour’s drive each way. Coming from the Dallas-Fort Worth area or from Houston, a weekend stay might be in order. Either way, you’re in for a treat with this historical part of the Texas Hill Country. Look for the Gruene water tower, and then you’ll know you’re there!

Things To Do In Gruene

The Gruene Historic District is entirely walkable. With tall trees offering shade and close free parking, it’s very doable for everyone — and you’ll be getting in some steps. Two main roads connect it all — Gruene Road and Hunter Road. Everything is in proximity to each other, and taking a leisure stroll up and down the street on both sides is the thing to do. But don’t overlook the alleys because unique shops and small eateries are there, too. Restaurants, wineries, eclectic boutiques, a local coffee shop, afternoon ice cream treat, and of course, checking out the Guadalupe River will take up most of your time. I’d plan for at least 4-6 hours in town.

Shop Gruene Historic District.

1. Shop Gruene Historic District

My favorite shop is pictured above. The bright colors on the porch draw my attention every time. But if you’re looking for something different, keep walking because there are plenty of other shops and boutiques up the street that sell clothing, decor, souvenirs, and the like. A must-visit is the Gruene General Store. It’s the first mercantile store built in 1878 and still standing as a gift shop and is chock-full of Texas items, gourmet foods, fudge, nostalgic candy, and more.

Gruene Hall, where you can see live music in Texas.

2. Live Music At Gruene Hall

Gruene Hall is Texas’s oldest dance hall and still going strong. It’s the only place in Gruene that never closed when everything else did back in the day. Big names like John Michael Montgomery, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Ricky Scaggs, and Wynonna Judd have played there or are in the lineup for future shows. Some shows are free. Sometimes the doors open before a show, and if so, you can take a peek inside.

Pro Tip: Only snack food is sold, so you may want to eat a good dinner before you go. But there are lots of beer and wine choices.

3. Rockin’ R On The Guadalupe River

The place looks like a mansion, but inside is a whole lot of fun for the whole family —and the Guadalupe River is a big part of it. The Rockin’ R is the place to rent tubes, rafts, and stand-up paddle boards. If coming to town after September, tubing down the river may not be available or wise because the river is just too cold, but other outdoor recreation will be available. Look for bands playing outside, outdoor games, food, and beer to be a part of the fun.

The Grapevine, wine and beer to-go, Gruene, Texas.

4. Local Wine

Enjoy the largest selection of Texas wines, other wines from around the world, several varieties of beer, and eats at The Grapevine . With the abundance of shade from the tall trees, you may want to sit outside on the lawn with your favorite drink. The outdoor space has plenty of picnic tables and benches for the whole family and is the perfect place for kids to roam. It’s pet-friendly outside.

There is a winery down the road called Winery On The Gruene . Enjoy wine tasting and barbeque outside or limited seating inside. It’s pet-friendly outside as well.

5. Old Gruene Market Days

If your plans bring you to town on the third full weekend of the month, and you like farmers markets, you’re in luck. The Old Gruene Market Days showcase around 100 booths of handmade goods from talented artisans from all around central Texas.

Pro Tip: It doesn’t operate in January and the Christmas market in December is on the first weekend — not the 3rd.

Gruene Mansion Inn.

6. Gruene Mansion Inn

Extend your day into night at the Gruene Mansion Inn , a rustic Victorian B&B with 30 rooms, a delicious breakfast, and a gift shop. Some rooms back up to the Guadalupe River, and the patios are spacious. When we were in town, the “no vacancy” light was on. We didn’t notice anything going on, and I bet this place fills up fast, especially since it’s the only hotel in the historic district and it’s right next to Gruene Hall.

The Gruene Door Restaurant, Gruene, Texas.

Best Restaurants In Gruene

From family-oriented casual dining to river views, patio seating, and wine with your meal, you’ll find a little bit of everything in this small historical section of New Braunfels. From what I noticed, most restaurants in the area open at 11 a.m. for lunch, and all are open for dinner. Also, outdoor dining is trendy in this area, so look for that too at almost, if not all, restaurants. The hard part is which one to choose!

Gruene River Grill, Texas.

Gruene River Grill

If you like dining by the river and a good chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes, you will love this American cuisine and casual dining experience. Gruene River Grill offers outdoor seating and inside seating with air conditioning, a nice bar, and party rooms. Catch happy hour Monday to Friday, 3-6 p.m.

Gristmill River Restaurant and Bar, Gruene, Texas.

Gristmill River Restaurant And Bar

The Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar has been operating in the old 1878 cotton gin since 1977. You’ll see the sign from the street, but it’s a short walk down the path toward the river to the restaurant. Seating is available outside on the shady patio with river views, inside open-air, and all around the old cotton gin. It’s a sight to see and a great experience if you only have one night for dinner. Its cuisine features ribs, steak, hamburgers, salads, and chicken. Afterward indulge in a sharable German chocolate cake dessert.

Gruene Coffee Haus

Whether you enjoy your coffee in the morning, afternoon, or evening, the Gruene Coffee Haus is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is a full-service micro-roaster and full espresso bar serving cold brew and fresh coffee by the cup. It’s one of those places that’s located in the alley — not hidden but in a very quaint area next to Fickle Pickles and Tipsy Gypsy. There is outdoor seating and it is dog-friendly.

Rhea's Ice Cream, Gruene, Texas.

Rhea’s Ice Cream

Rhea’s is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday only from noon to 10 pm. When the line never ends — it must be good! Grab an ice cream and keep walking. And when the owners boast that they “could be” the best ice cream in the world, I think that’s enough incentive to try it out. The small shop is adjacent to The Gruene Grove , where you can sit outside on the patio and listen to live music while enjoying food and your ice cream. Also, look for Black’s Barbeque serving barbecue from the big black food truck. It’s all there for your enjoyment.

Pro Tip: These three share the same parking lot but may have different hours.

Cantina Del Rio, Gruene, Texas.

Cantina Del Rio

For tacos, burgers, fajitas, beer, and the best margaritas in town, head to the colorful bungalow Cantina del Rio. Enjoy your meal on the porch by the outdoor bar or inside. Either way, you’re close to the river where everything is better!

Adobe Verde

Homemade Tex-Mex food made fresh daily, Adobe Verde is the place to have a great time. Its huge outdoor space allows for many family members to be together to celebrate whatever it is they’re celebrating! They also cater events, or you can have your event at the restaurant. Parking is available.

The River House

For some home-cooked Southern food like corn fritters and fried green tomatoes, get in the car and drive a very short distance to The River House .

Pro Tip: It’s just down the street on New Braunfels Ave. But, there’s a spa next door!!

Mozie’s

Sports-minded folks will love this casual bar & grill complete with happy hour, premium liquor, wine, beer, and TVs to watch your favorite team. Located across the street from Gruene Hall. Mozie’s welcomes you for lunch, dinner or just to kill some time waiting for Gruene Hall to open.

Pro Tip: Seeing that there are more visitors than there are residents on any given day — the Gruene Historic District will always be a fun entertainment place for the entire family.

10 Fun Things to Do in Gruene, Texas

By Author Laura Longwell

Posted on Last updated: January 4, 2024

Known for its charm and German-Texas heritage, the Historic District of Gruene, Texas, is a top attraction in the Hill Country. This distinctive area is filled with buildings from the 1800s that now house boutiques, restaurants, and gathering spots for live music and other festivities. Any day of the week, there are lots of fun things to do in Gruene that attract locals and visitors from across the state.

Gruene (pronounced “green”) was established in 1872 by cotton farmer Henry D. Gruene, a first-generation Texan whose father came from Germany. The German-influenced town thrived until the 1920s when the boll weevil destroyed the cotton crop and the effect of the Great Depression reached the area. In the 1970s, restoration and new investment revived the town, which is now an historic district in New Braunfels.

Today, visitors come for dancing, antiquing, river tubing, and more. Here’s a look at what to do when you visit Gruene.

See a concert at Gruene Hall

The oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas, Gruene Hall welcomes performers every night of the week to its stage in the center of the historic district. With its indoor dance hall and ample courtyard, there is plenty of space to spread out, two-step, and enjoy the music.

Built in 1878, Gruene Hall has an illustrious history and—like its neighbor not far away in Luckenbach —remains a favorite of artists both famous and up-and-coming. Over the decades, greats such as Willie Nelson, Gregg Allman, George Strait, Lyle Lovett, and more have played here. You never know who you might see on their way to stardom.

Shop at Gruene General Store

In true general store fashion, Gruene General Store has a little bit of everything, though this place was clearly designed to appeal to visitors rather than locals doing their weekly shopping. You can find postcards and souvenir t-shirts alongside candy, jewelry, and home décor items. For something a little more unique, there is handmade fudge and an old-fashioned soda fountain to enjoy.

Hang out at Gruene Coffee Haus

The local roastery and coffee house, Gruene Coffee House has visitors’ needs covered from morning to night. This family-owned shop serves their freshly roasted beans in drip coffee and espresso drinks plus a menu of smoothies, local wine, craft beer, and more, inviting customers to sit down and stay for a while. They’re particularly known for their Texas Pecan coffee, a blend that includes roasted Texas pecans with the coffee beans. Open daily.

Tube on the Comal River

People in inner tubes in a river.

One of the most popular things to do near Gruene in the spring and summer is to spend time on the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers. Tubing and rafting top the list of ways to beat the heat in the area with different companies offering not only tube rentals but shuttle service back to your car or hotel. For local service, Rockin’ R has both a location in Gruene and a private exit on the Comal River .

Browse the wares at Gruene Antique Company

Room filled with books, glassware, signs, and other antiques for sale

The Gruene Antique Company began welcoming visitors through its doors over a century ago when it was the dry goods market for local tenant farmers. Now, the building offers distinctly different merchandise in its 6500 square feet of space. From unique housewares and specialty books to collectibles and even cowboy boots, Gruene Antique Company has a little bit of everything for collectors in Central Texas.

Fly fish on the Guadalupe River

The area around Gruene is home to many warm water species of fish. As a result, it’s a great place to go fly fishing for trout, bass, carp, and more. You can buy gear at a place like Gruene Outfitters and strike out on your own or connect with one of the many local guides who lead regular trips along the Guadalupe River and beyond.

Go wine tasting at The Grapevine

visit gruene texas

Central Texas is known for its great wineries , and The Grapevine is the best place in Gruene to sample the offerings. Right off the main street, the shop offers a large selection of local wines and beers that you can enjoy in the tasting room or on the huge patio outside–under misters or beside fire pits, depending on the season.

If you find yourself in town on the third Thursday of the month (except January), make sure to stop by for the “Come and Taste It” events. Texas vineyards feature tastings of their favorite or hard-to-find vintages for free, and there’s even live music.

Eat at the Gristmill

Inside a room with white brick walls filled with restaurant tables and chairs

The Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar is the most popular restaurant in Gruene for good reason—not only is the food great, but the setting is unlike any other restaurant you’ll find. Built in 1977, it is a replica of the original cotton gin that operated here until parts of it burned down in 1922.

Overlooking the Guadalupe River, the Gristmill is known for its rustic setting and tiered patio. Try the burgers, ribs, or chicken fried steak while you enjoy the view. Reservations are recommended.

Attend Old Gruene Market Days

On the third weekend of every month (except January), nearly 100 local artisans come to town for Old Gruene Market Days . This special market has welcomed producers and artists for over 30 years selling their unique merchandise and food items.

Nothing here is generic or mass-produced—everything is original and made by the vendors themselves. There is a wide variety of things for sale ranging from custom furniture and jewelry to photography and sculpture.

Stay in the historic district

visit gruene texas

There’s no better way to enjoy all that Gruene has to offer than to wake up in the historic district. Just steps from the dance hall, Gruene Mansion Inn occupies the 1872 Victorian home that once belonged to Henry D, Gruene, the town’s founder. With the addition of barns, the Carriage House, and other historic buildings, there are different types of rooms to choose from, and staying here puts you in the heart of everything.

10 Memorable Things To Do In Gruene TX

October 20, 2020 |

Gruene (pronounced “green” — and often mistakenly referred to as Greene Texas!) is a great weekend getaway destination and home to Texas' oldest dance hall. If you've never visited, you're missing out on one of the most adorable little towns in the Texas Hill Country. Here's a list of my favorite things to do in Gruene TX, plus lots of photos to inspire your next trip!

Pinnable multi-photo collage with pictures of the Texas Hill Country and a text overlay that reads 10 Things To Do in Gruene TX.

Where To Stay in Gruene

The top 10 things to do in gruene tx.

Gruene is the perfect day trip from Austin or San Antonio — at approximately 40 minutes from either city (varies with traffic).

The actual historic downtown area in Gruene is only a couple blocks wide, so you can easily navigate the entire town in one day. Almost every restaurant or shop is located on one of two streets, so it's a very walkable town.

⭐ Insider Tip:  Here's a handy map of Gruene . Parking is free and plentiful all over town! You'll want to turn off Hunter Street onto the little dead-end road next to the #2, because it's a huge parking lot that's rarely ever completely full.

Go Two-Steppin' at Gruene Hall

I absolutely adore Gruene Hall! Maybe it's because I'm drawn to almost anything with history and character, but it's long been a favorite spot of mine.

Gruene Hall is Texas' oldest continually operating dance hall, and the building's age is apparent from the moment you enter the screen doors and step onto the slanted and rickety old wooden floors.

The walls are covered with photos of some of the most famous country artists imaginable — many of whom got their start at Gruene Hall. (Think George Straight, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, and Lyle Lovett, amongst others.)

On any given week you'll find live entertainment that ranges from hugely popular current stars to up-and-coming local Texas acts. Gruene Hall's website has a calendar of upcoming performers and info for purchasing tickets to shows or dance lessons.

⭐ Insider Tip: Gruene Hall is standing room only, but it's an open-air dance hall and you can listen to the music from the garden area outside if you aren't able to elbow your way indoors.

The sign above the entryway at Gruene Hall.

Reality TV show fans: Gruene Hall was featured in an episode of Kaitlyn Bristowe's season of The Bachelorette . See if you can find where she added her initials and a heart to one of the posts!

Grab a Bite to Eat at the Gristmill

Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar is probably the most well-known restaurant in Gruene and for good reason; the food is scrumptious. It's located in a prime spot along the banks of the Guadalupe River and has a beautiful view, particularly in late fall or winter when the trees have dropped their leaves.

Everything I've ever sampled off the menu at Gristmill has been delicious; it's one of those restaurants that gets my order right every single time. Without fail.

I typically order their delicious old-fashioned burger with round cut Gristmill fries. (Obviously, all diets are off when visiting the ‘mill!) Sometimes I'll simply opt for a drink with a side dish, since their sides are very filling.

I have a bad habit of snacking at the other shops in the area while I'm shopping, so it's nice to save room so I can sample goodies elsewhere.

Click on each image to see it larger and view additional information.

The Great Texas Pecan Candy Co. is my second favorite place to stop for food. It isn't a dine-in shop, but the sweet gentleman behind the counter is very generous when handing out samples.

You have to try the Pecan Roca Toffee!! It's my top choice and one of my favorite items to give as a Christmas gift. Friends and family go nuts (ha!) for the stuff.

The store also sells various flavored nuts, seasoned popcorn, pralines, brittle, and more. I'd suggest sampling to determine your favorites, then purchase the container that holds 3 varieties of your choice.

Check out the Famous Water Tower

The landmark water tower in Gruene can be seen from miles away and has quite a history to it , including a depressed town manager who hung himself from the famous beacon and a dent in the cap of the tower that occurred during a land dispute.

Although the tower once supplied water to the town of Gruene, it no longer serves that purpose and is now a decorative symbol of the city. It is most commonly spotted in the background of Instagram shots featuring #gruenehall.

Relax While Sippin' Local Wine

The Grapevine is probably one of the first establishments you'll spot if you park in the main parking lot in Gruene. They frequently have live musical acts performing in the garden, and it's hard not to be drawn in to see what's happening.

Simply put — it's all about the alcohol! There is a wine tasting room where you can sample a large selection of Texas wines that can be purchased by the glass, bottle, or case, and they also have beer on tap. It's a lovely place to just rest and chill for a bit.

View from the Gruene General Store breezeway looking towards The Grapevine restaurant.

The covered breezeway next to Gruene General Store makes a great spot to enjoy a glass of wine or some ice cream. It overlooks The Grapevine.

Gruene Music & Wine Festival occurs during the beautiful fall season and is one of Gruene's most popular annual events.

The festival features the very best in live Texas music paired with wine and beer tasting events. It also offers numerous booths where you can sample delicious German foods.

Support Local Artists

Old Gruene Market Days happens the first full 3rd weekend of each month (except January) and the event showcases local artisans who offer a wide variety of handcrafted items. Think hand-crafted leather, Texas photographs and artwork, jewelry, canned goods, children's clothing, spices/dips, etc.

They operate under tents that are set up on the main street (Hunter St.) in front of Adobe Verde. Even though it's shaded, be aware that it gets very hot in the summertime!

Try Gruene Texas Tubing!

The Guadalupe River is stunningly beautiful and is a great place for taking pictures, playing in the water, or going tubing. The water is cold, but on a hot summer day in Texas it's just the ticket!

Rockin' R River Rides offers water activities, such as tubing (a Texas tradition), rafting, and canoe trips.

Daisy and I like to park in Historic Gruene and walk down Hunter Street until we hit the bridge, then kick off our shoes and go exploring.

Cute pre-teen girl sitting at the edge of the Guadalupe River.

Even when visiting during the winter months, Daisy can't help but roll up her jeans and dip her toes in the crystal clear water of the Guadalupe!

Shop Local & Support Small Businesses

Aside from all the great shops I've already mentioned, here are a few more you might want to check out while you're in the area:

  • Tejas Traders is my favorite shop for home decor! They have a great selection of Hill Country-style decor items for the home. There's even more decor out back, so make sure you check out the entire store.
  • Simply Detailed  is an adorable store set in an historic older home, and it's where we spend the majority of our clothing budget in Gruene. The store is decorated beautifully and carries current trends in addition to basics, such as tanks and leggings. It's a boutique with a good selection of unique jewelry, in addition to the really cute clothes. This store reminds me a lot of the boutiques in Boerne and Fredericksburg.
  • Pookie Janes is a fun shop for the ladies! Daisy and I both love their jewelry selection. We also purchase a lot of gifts in their shop. (They have great candles and signage.) If you're looking for cute and casual outfits, Pookie Janes is the spot. They also have a mancave!
  • Gruene With Envy  carries unique accessories, gifts, women's outfits, and shoes. Their jewelry is really colorful and the outfits are always fun and never boring.

Gruene Lake Village is a short drive from the main street area. It's a new(ish) shopping village and is very picturesque. Although they still need to fill the majority of the shops, it's a great place for photo opps!

Sleep in Texas History

You'll find historic B&Bs throughout the town, including one that was the town founder's original residence!

Gruene is a very small town, so you'll need to search far in advance if you're planning to visit during a weekend when a major event is scheduled. Otherwise, you should be able to find accommodations easily! Check here to find all the best deals…

Gruene Mansion Inn

The inn is currently a 31-room bed & breakfast, but it once served as the town founder's home. In 1872, H.D. Gruene constructed this Victorian home as his place of residence along the Guadelupe.

Gruene Mansion Inn exterior with Christmas decor draped on its wraparound porch.

The historic Gruene Mansion Inn is centrally located and just steps away from Gruene Hall and The Gristmill Restaurant.

It's been featured in Texas Monthly and Southern Living magazines, and many of the rooms offer riverfront access. It's rated #1 on TripAdvisor!

Gruene River Inn

If you're interested in water sports and in checking out nearby Schlitterban Park, the Gruene River Inn is a good option. It's situated high on the banks of the Guadalupe River, so it has incredible views and direct access to the water.

Select it if you love nature and want to relax on a rocking chair while enjoying beautiful Texas scenery. They have free wifi, a complimentary continental breakfast, and free parking.

Vacation Rentals in Gruene TX

In addition to cute B&Bs, I also love to stay in vacation rentals when I travel — and there are plenty of cute ones in Gruene and New Braunfels: VRBO in Gruene Texas

Pick up a Souvenir

Gruene General Store is perfect for kids and the young-at-heart. It's ranked as one of the top 40 places to visit in Texas and is packed to the brim with food, toys, books, and unique Texas souvenirs.

Daisy could spend hours in this store — most of it perched at the old-fashioned ice cream counter. She loves ordering scoops of Blue Bell Ice Cream in a cone, while I prefer sampling the fudge varieties.

There's also a large section of flavored butter, salsas, and preserves available to taste. They have a Christmas tree on display year-round, so be sure to pick out an ornament to commemorate your visit!

The Gruene Country Store soda fountain counter.

How cute is the ice cream and soda fountain area at Gruene General Store?! You can taste test each of the butter and salsa samples. My favorite is their Amaretto Pecan Honey Butter!

DID YOU KNOW? Gruene was founded in the 1840's by German farmers and was once a booming commerce center. However, boll weevils and the Great Depression took their toll, and Gruene was essentially a ghost town by the 1950's. Local student Chip Kaufman was credited for saving the historic buildings from being razed.

While Gruene is beautiful throughout the year, my favorite time to visit is during the Christmas season. That's when the entire town is aglow with lights, and everything looks so magical! So, last but definitely not least…

Experience Christmas with a Texas Twist

Holidays in Gruene is an annual event bursting with small town Texas charm. It's an ideal stop for families because there's something delightful for all ages. In Gruene, Santa is better known as “Cowboy Kringle” and he sports a cowboy hat, chaps and boots.

During the annual town lighting ceremony, he rides down Hunter Street (on his horse, of course) and stops just shy of Gruene Hall. That's where he visits with the crowd and hands out candy canes.

The most magical part of the evening is when he flips a special switch and the entire town alights with the twinkly glow of Christmas lights. Even the famous water tower receives a colorful treatment that can be seen from neighboring small towns!

Old-timey Santa with a cowboy hat and ruddy cheeks.

Cowboy Kris Kringle is an authentic Texas Santa! He wears chaps and a cowboy hat, and he has a bag full of candy canes that he passes out to the kids.

What is the name of the place with he roosters? I was there last weekend and purchased a cross. I really need another one but wanted to see about them shipping it home. (Wisconsin) I can’t make out the wording on the side of the building. 😥 I absolutely LOVED visiting Gruene!!!

I love it there, too! It’s such a cute little town. That store is called Rusty Bugs & Roosters. I don’t think they have a website, but they do have a Facebook page. It lists their phone number as (210) 865-7956

It’s not too far from Dallas. Definitely worth the trip! You could stop by Fredericksburg, too, if you like seeing cute little towns all lit up for the holidays.

Great post! I just moved to Atlanta from Canada and I’m trying to visit as much of the South as possible so this is totally added to my list. Especially since I’m a huge Bachelor fan so you can find me at Gruene Hall. Hahaha!

Oh yay, a fellow bachelor fan!! Watching that show inspires my travels half the time. They visit so many incredible destinations!

Thanks for this great post! Your daughter looked so familiar to me and it’s because I followed your memory keeping work years ago! 🙂 My parents are coming to visit me in May and I’m taking them to Gruene. I’ve lived in San Antonio for 3 years now, but have never been. Is the Grapevine okay to visit with children?

visit gruene texas

April 16, 2016 at 1:25 PM

Yes, that’s the same Daisy from the scrapbook magazines — except she’s practically an adult now. She graduates in 2 months! 🙂 I bet your parents will love Gruene. Mine do! Grapevine has a large semi-fenced outdoor seating area with picnic tables and I see kids running around that area all the time. The adults can sit at the table and enjoy wine and the kids can kick a ball around, play chase, or meet other kids. If you want them to sit at the table with you, I’d suggest buying them an ice cream cone from the general store next door and they can bring it to Grapevine. The kids would also probably love taking the short walk down to the river to stick their feet in. It’s cold, but the water is pretty calm and shallow (unless for some reason we get a huge rainstorm in the days before). Have fun!

Great list! We are headed to Gruene today. Excited to visit this special little place. Thank you for the info!!

July 18, 2015 at 12:26 PM

Have a great time, Michele! I wrote this post about the historic section of Gruene (the main 2 blocks), but there’s a newer section that has some fantastic shopping that I also need to write about. It’s called Gruene Lake Village. If you get a chance, stop by there, too! Alibi Boutique has some really great (trendy/new) clothes and accessories. There are a total of about 15 shops in Gruene Lake, so it’s worth it to drive there from the historic section. You could walk, but it’s a bit of a long walk and in today’s heat, I’d suggest driving. 🙂 There’s a great little gelato/ice cream shop there, too–perfect for today!! Have fun!

1845 | First Settlers

Arriving in Texas in the mid 1840s, German farmers became the first settlers of what is now known as Gruene, Texas.

1904 | Mercantile

As the town continued to prosper, a new mercantile building (now Gruene Antique Company ) sprang up in 1904.

1974 | National Register of Historic Places

In 1974, Chip Kaufman, an architecture student at UT Austin working with the Texas Historical Commission and an avid kayaker, floated down a little further on the Guadalupe River than usual, to the southern most public takeout known as The Gruene Crossing. After catching a glimpse of an old water tower up the hill peeking above the treetops, he decided to investigate. Astonished by his discovery of numerous late 1800's and early 1900's buildings, some with architectural layering, he immediately realized their significance and requested permission from the Texas Historical Commission to inventory the buildings for their records, which they approved.

1987 | First Gruene Music & Wine Festival

The festival began as a one-day event with the purpose of celebrating Texas and Americana music while raising funds for the United Way of Comal County. In its inaugural year, the festival raised $450 for the charity. As the event has grown, so has the charitable give. So much so, that it is now proudly considered the highlight event for the annual United Way fundraising campaign in our area.

1878 | Dance Hall

Henry D. Gruene built houses in various styles — a Victorian cottage (now The Pomegranate ), a large brick home, and a frame house (now Gruene Haus) for the foreman of his farm. The first mercantile store (now Gruene General Store ) was built in 1878 and a cotton gin (now Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar ) powered by the Guadalupe River was added soon after.

1922 | original cotton gin burned

The death of Henry D. Gruene in 1920 marked the downfall of Gruene's development and good fortune. In 1922, the original cotton gin burned and was replaced by a modern electric model down the road (now Adobe Verde).

Pat Molak, frustrated with big-city life and in search of a true Texas dance hall, purchased Gruene Hall. A few unavoidable repairs were made to the Hall, but little else was necessary. Left uncorrupted, the 6,000 square-foot, open-air dance hall became a virtual magnet, a starting point for many of Texas' up-and-coming performers, and once again, the heart of Gruene.

1845 – 1974

Arriving in Texas in the mid 1840s, German farmers became the first settlers of what is now known as Gruene, Texas. Ernst Gruene, a German immigrant, and his bride Antoinette, had reached the newly established city of New Braunfels in 1845, but acreage was scarce. Thus, Ernst and his two sons purchased land just down river, and Ernst built the first home in Gruene in early fachwerk style. His second son, Henry D. Gruene, built his home (now Gruene Mansion Inn) and planted his surrounding land with cotton. Having become the number one cash crop, the cotton business soon brought 20 to 30 families to Henry D.’s lands.

Henry D. built houses in various styles — a Victorian cottage (now The Pomegranate), a large brick home, and a frame house (now Gruene Haus) for the foreman of his farm. The first mercantile store (now Gruene General Store) was built in 1878 and a cotton gin (now Gristmill River Restaurant and Bar) powered by the Guadalupe River was added soon after. Further construction during this profitable time included a dance hall and saloon (Gruene Hall), which became the center of the community’s social life.

As the town continued to prosper, a new mercantile building (now Gruene Antique Company) sprang up in 1904. However, the death of Henry D. in 1920 marked the downfall of Gruene’s development and good fortune. In 1922, the original cotton gin burned and was replaced by a modern electric model down the road (now Adobe Verde). Yet, the economic disasters of the boll weevil and the Depression were too much for the family businesses and they went under, except for Gruene Hall, which never closed.

1974 – Today

In 1974, Chip Kaufman, an architecture student at UT Austin working with the Texas Historical Commission and an avid kayaker, floated down a little further on the Guadalupe River than usual, to the southern most public takeout known as The Gruene Crossing. After catching a glimpse of an old water tower up the hill peeking above the treetops, he decided to investigate. Astonished by his discovery of numerous late 1800’s and early 1900’s buildings, some with architectural layering, he immediately realized their significance and requested permission from the Texas Historical Commission to inventory the buildings for their records, which they approved. While doing this he learned that a group of real estate developers had purchased the last 200+ acres of the Gruene Estate, including all the historic buildings, and planned a housing development which included razing the old structures to build condominiums on the river bluff. Kaufman convinced the developers of the significance of the buildings in Texas history and with their blessing Kaufman worked to place Gruene on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 as an entire district. The developers further agreed to let Kaufman find new owners interested in the old buildings for new commercial ventures which would provide a core for their new housing development. Pat Molak was among the first of the new owners.

Pat Molak, frustrated with big-city life and in search of a true Texas dance hall, purchased Gruene Hall in 1975. A few unavoidable repairs were made to the Hall, but little else was necessary. Left uncorrupted, the 6,000 square-foot, open-air dance hall became a virtual magnet, a starting point for many of Texas’ up-and-coming performers, and once again, the heart of Gruene.

With the help of his friend Mary Jane Nalley, he worked to preserve the authentic, turn-of-the-century look and feel of Gruene by purchasing and repairing several of the town’s most notable structures and transforming them into thriving businesses. These developments seemed to rekindle the spark of Gruene, and soon the town’s familiar charm began to shine again.

Gruene itself has been added to the National Register of Historic Places, and many of the buildings that were rescued by Molak and Nalley have been awarded a Texas medallion from the Texas Historical Commission. It has also been recognized by the Texas travel industry as a premiere attraction for visitors, which is no surprise to its merchants and guests.

Even with the remarkable growth of this once sleepy little town, the main focus of Gruene is, and continues to be, bona fide Texas. Everything from the wares they sell to the music they play speaks to Molak and Nalley’s commitment to preserving the authenticity of Gruene and providing its guests with an experience that has the signature seal of the Lone Star State.
