Titanic VR Review: A Promising Start For VR Edutainment

When you say the word Titanic you can’t help but think Celine Dion, drawings of French girls and steamy windows. That’s a bit wrong, isn’t it? 1,503 people died when the ‘unsinkable’ vessel hit the ocean bed in 1912, nearly three-quarters of all passengers aboard, and yet time and Hollywood have weathered the impact those numbers should make. There’s a challenge for the so-called VR empathy machine if I’ve ever heard one.

The second project from Immersive VR Education, Titanic VR goes about restoring the human factor of the disaster in two fascinating ways. Though held back by some expected flaws, it’s one of the best examples of VR edutainment yet, turning what could easily be a mundane history lesson into an engaging and even emotional interactive experience.

Immersive really thought outside the box here. Instead of the obvious virtual tour of an authentically-digitized shipwreck, the developer has thinly disguised its virtual preservation inside a story-driven campaign. In the main part of the game you play as Dr. Ethan Lynch, a researcher that takes regular dives out to the wreck in a trusty one-man submarine to complete tasks for clients, chief of which is a woman writing a biography for one of her relatives who died in the incident. Five to ten-minute missions see you explore different parts of the ship, often in search of more clues that piece together the fateful events of that day.

It’s a winning approach that largely keeps your attention and intrigue throughout. Like Immersive’s own Apollo 11 experience or Curiscope’s Operation Apex before it, Titanic VR knows that gamers want to play games and builds its message around that, though it also falls into some of the same pitfalls that any developer is at risk of.

In between levels you’ll visit your research lab where you’ll report your findings and also preserve any artifacts you’ve brought back home with you. It’s the last thing I expected to be doing in a game about the Titanic, but I found myself surprisingly enamored by the clinical tasks of washing and freeze-drying anything from journals to pocket watches. There’s a newfound appreciation to be gained not just for the history but the real work that’s going into maintaining it, though it’s let down slightly by the unbearably cheesy voice acting and more redundant tasks like adding new upgrades to your underwater drone.

Exploration, meanwhile, is an initially fascinating experience that suffers somewhat from diminished returns. Whilst early excursions into the ship’s interior are often eye-opening, later levels come up with silly tasks like providing the lighting for a film director as he gloats about his award-winning work in a not-too-subtle dig at James Cameron. You can see why the developers would think this a refreshing palette-cleanser, but it drags on and the educational element is largely forgotten about for a bit. The same goes for an exhaustive chase through the wreck that has you follow a rare type of fish. It’s a decent attempt to mix things up but it goes on for far too long and leaves you frustrated.

vr titanic tour

Titanic VR is at its best when it’s got education at the heart. The journey to the wreck is filled in with gripping accounts from survivors taken from interviews over the past 100 years, for example, and inspecting rooms like a parcel office in great detail manages to completely lose you in the moment. The dialogue, meanwhile, seamlessly weaves in important facts without overselling them. The unavoidable mundanity of traipsing from rusted metal room to rusted metal room does eventually start to set in, though fun visual details like pulsating jellyfish and tiny crabs always give you something new to delight over.

Another big addition to the full version of the game is a short segment that travels back in time to the day of the crash itself. Though it’s missing the interactivity of the main portion of the game, it’s still one of Titanic VR’s most powerful elements. Based upon eye-witness accounts, you find yourself seated on one of the first lifeboats to leave the vessel as it begins to sink. Simply sitting there as part of the huddle of women and children so suddenly separated from their husbands, sons and siblings is distressing enough but there are several moments that really hit home. It’s a distinctly personal experience that brings the suffering closer than comfort would like, though it also spares you some of the truly gruesome details as you watch the behemoth disappear from afar. It’s a missed opportunity not to see more of the ship’s interior, too.

Perhaps Titanic’s biggest flaw is the somewhat muted presentation which, although serviceable, fails to match the ambitions of the content itself. This was a Kickstarter-funded project and thus Immersive’s resources surely only stretched so far, but the lack of certain sound effects and the somewhat rudimentary appearance of other characters limit the impact the experience can make at times.

vr titanic tour

As an entire package, Titanic VR is a thoughtful, engaging piece of VR edutainment with some great ideas and surprisingly powerful moments. Immersive VR clearly understands that, for a game to educate, it has to first be held to the same standards that we put upon any other experience and it meets many of those expectations with ease. Ultimately its muted presentation and padded-out campaign hold it back from true greatness, but it’s another crucial step for one of VR’s most important developers that suggests they’ll definitely get there one day.

Titanic VR is now available on Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Windows VR headsets for $19.99. Read our Game Review Guidelines for more information on how we arrived at this score.

Our hearts will go on —

3d “digital twin” showcases wreck of titanic in unprecedented detail, “this is a new phase for underwater forensic investigation and examination.”.

Jennifer Ouellette - May 17, 2023 8:43 pm UTC

The RMS Titanic sank to the bottom of the North Atlantic in 1912, but the fate of the ship and its passengers has fascinated the popular imagination for more than a century. Now we have the first full-size 3D digital scan of the complete wreckage—a "digital twin" that captures Titanic in unprecedented detail. Magellan Ltd, a deep-sea mapping company , and Atlantic Productions (which is making a documentary about the project) conducted the scans over a six-week expedition last summer.

“Great explorers have been down to the Titanic ... but actually they went with really low-resolution cameras and they could only speculate on what happened," Atlantic Productions CEO Andrew Geffen told BBC News . “We now have every rivet of the Titanic , every detail, we can put it back together, so for the first time we can actually see what happened and use real science to find out what happened."

Further Reading

Titanic  met its doom just four days into the Atlantic crossing, roughly 375 miles (600 kilometers) south of Newfoundland. At 11:40 pm ship's time on April 14, 1912,  Titanic hit that infamous iceberg and began taking on water, flooding five of its 16 watertight compartments, thereby sealing its fate. More than 1,500 passengers and crew perished; only around 710 of those on board survived.

Titanic remained undiscovered at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean until an expedition led by Jean-Louis Michel and Robert Ballard reached the wreck on September 1, 1985. The ship split apart as it sank, with the bow and stern sections lying roughly one-third of a mile apart. The bow proved to be surprisingly intact, while the stern showed severe structural damage, likely flattened from the impact as it hit the ocean floor. There is a debris field spanning a 5-by-3-mile area, filled with furniture fragments, dinnerware, shoes and boots, and other personal items.

As reported previously , we've seen images and video footage of the wreck since it was discovered in the mid 1980s. That includes the  footage shot by director James Cameron in 1995 for sequences featured in his  blockbuster 1997 film —although much of the latter was actually miniature models and special effects filmed on a set, since Cameron couldn't get the high-quality footage he needed for a feature film.

Last year, a private company called OceanGate Expeditions released a one-minute video showcasing the first 8K video footage of the wreck of the Titanic , showing some of its features in new, vivid detail. One could make out the name of the anchor manufacturer (Noah Hingley & Sons Ltd.), for instance, and the footage also gave us a better look at the bow, hull number one, the number-one cargo hold, solid bronze capstans, and one of the single-ended boilers. The footage was shot during the company's 2022 descent, with guests forking over $250,000 apiece for a seat on the submersible. A second OceanGate expedition to the Titanic wreckage was planned for this year.

The joint mission by Magellan and Atlantic Productions deployed two submersibles nicknamed Romeo and Juliet to map every millimeter of the wreck, including the debris field spanning some three miles. The result was a whopping 16 terabytes of data, along with over 715,000 still images and 4K video footage. That raw data was then processed to create the 3D digital twin. The resolution is so good, one can make out part of the serial number on one of the propellers.

"This model is the first one based on a pure data cloud, that stitches all that imagery together with data points created by a digital scan, and with the help from a little artificial intelligence, we are seeing the first unbiased view of the wreck," historian and Titanic expert Parks Stephenson told BBC News . “I believe this is a new phase for underwater forensic investigation and examination.”

This Titanic VR game puts you aboard the sinking ship

Titanic VR experience

Feeling ‘seasick’ in VR isn’t exactly rare , but it’s likely to hit you even harder if you opt to board the sinking Titanic in an upcoming adventure from Globiss Interactive.

Titanic: A Space Between isn’t a dry historical reconstruction. Rather, the reveal trailer indicates a time-travel rescue caper gone wrong, with moody dark environments and possibly some supernatural goings-on in the mix, too.

The voiceover for the trailer gives a brief synopsis. The player takes on the role of Hendrick, an adventurer sent back in time to rescue someone called Diana, who appears to have been trapped by another time-traveller, Dr Plackett.

Unfortunately, something goes wrong with the time travel, and you arrive 24 hours later than planned. So, rather than getting to enjoy the carefree opulence of early 20th-century cruising, you’re left exploring the waterlogged ship after it collides with the iceberg.

Not discounting the fact that trailers are always selective, it certainly looks impressively immersive, bringing to mind some of the best VR games , like Half-Life: Alyx and The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners. But plenty of questions remain, including how long the game lasts and how much it’ll set you back.

The game is coming in the fourth quarter of this year for Meta Quest, Pico, and Steam VR platforms. Interestingly, a footnote says that the footage is taken from Meta Quest — which is very impressive, given the splashy Bioshock-style water effects that abound in the trailer. Though it could, of course, be the Meta Quest Pro , which is 50 per cent faster than the Quest 2 and offers 37 per cent more pixels.

If you want to explore the sinking Titanic without the science fiction window dressing, Titanic VR lets you explore the ship in a more educational environment via a six-hour story-led adventure grounded in the actual events of 1912. There’s quite some contrast between the two games , as you can see from the trailer above.

A two-story, full-scale recreation of the ship’s famed Grand Staircase is part of “Titanic: The Exhibition” at Westfield Old Orchard in Skokie through July 7. (Imagine Exhibitions, Inc.)

Over one hundred thousand visitors from 47 states have toured “Titanic: The Exhibition” since it opened on Feb. 16 at Westfield Old Orchard in Skokie. Because of the overwhelming demand for tickets, the exhibit has been extended through July 7.

Entry times are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays-Thursdays and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Fridays-Sundays. The exhibition is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The interactive experience begins when each visitor receives a boarding pass corresponding to the name of a passenger on the ship’s maiden and final voyage. Visitors tour recreations of the ship’s interior, including a two-story full-scale recreation of the ship’s Grand Staircase, the millionaires’ suite, a first class cabin, a third class cabin, the boiler room, and more.

There’s also an outdoor view of the Promenade Deck and a Discovery Gallery with details of the ship’s wreckage site. The final stop is a visit to a Tribute Wall, where visitors learn the fate of the passenger who is listed on their boarding pass.

Mark Lach is creative producer of the exhibition for the company that created it, Atlanta-based Imagine Exhibitions, Inc.

“I set the Titanic Exhibition when it first came to Chicago back in 2000 at the Museum of Science and Industry,” Lach said. Over one million people toured that incarnation and it was sold out every day, he reported. It was presented by a different exhibition company then.

“It was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life,” Lach said. “It was during that stay that I went out to the wreck site and got into one of those submersibles and went to the ocean floor. That started me on a journey of taking the Titanic exhibit to many places.”

The current exhibition came to Chicago intact from Los Angeles. Lach’s role this time is serving as a spokesperson for the exhibition, which was originally created to honor the 25th anniversary of James Cameron’s 1997 film, “Titanic.” Props and recreations of costumes from that film are included in the exhibit.

Transferring the exhibit from L.A. to Chicago was a complex process. They had to first locate a space. “We’re in what was the Bloomingdale’s department store,” Lach reported.

Once the spot was chosen, Lach and the others involved in the project had to evaluate how much space they had and how much ceiling height. “Then we started to lay the exhibition out,” he said.

They also had to figure where to place the 385 artifacts on loan from Canadian collector René Bergeron to best tell the story of the ship’s brief history. It includes such things as a postcard sent by a 19-year-old crew member, a piece of the Grand Staircase, a gold swimming medal, and a teacup from first class.

The process of putting together the exhibit took about six months.

Lach noted that following the story of the individual on their boarding pass can be a moving experience for visitors.

“They start to read this passenger’s name, and the class they traveled in, where they were heading, where they were coming from,” Lach said. “But one thing you don’t know is their fate.”

People learn the fate of their passenger out of the 2,200 people who were onboard when they view the Tribute Wall at the end of the exhibit.

“People don’t leave until they find their name,” Lach said. It’s a story of “life being fragile” which seems to resonate with many visitors, Lach said.

Lach indicated that they first used the boarding pass at the Museum of Science and Industry exhibit 24 years ago “and saw how that was the connecting force. Originally, it was just the passenger’s name and the class they traveled in. Adding a little context — who they were, what they were doing — has really become a powerful piece of the experience.”

Many of those details were located on the website Encyclopedia Titanica.

Although it’s not part of the exhibit, Lach’s trip to the bottom of the sea has impacted his connection to the exhibit and helped him answer visitors’ questions.

As the small sub descended, Lach reported, “The bright blue faded to black. For the next two hours, we were in darkness. It gets progressively colder inside the sub.”

When the sub finally touched down, lights on the exterior of the sub turned on. “There was the bow of the titanic,” Lach said. “Incredible.”

Lach concluded that the importance of the exhibit is that people who go through “connect with the story and reflect a little bit about how uncertain life can be. And you walk out with a better appreciation of your loved ones, your friends, and life in general.”

Combination tickets with “Downton Abbey: The Exhibition” across the lobby are available for $46.50-$49.50.

There are still secrets to be found on Titanic. These graphics explore them

It sank 112 years ago Monday, but our obsession with the RMS Titanic continues.

History's most famous ship slipped beneath the North Atlantic at 2:20 a.m. on April 15, 1912 , but we continue to explore its maiden voyage, iceberg, sinking and undersea decay through a seemingly endless stream of photographs, books , documentaries and movies , and museum exhibits.

Fascination has led to tragedy. A submersible carrying five passengers to view the Titanic imploded near the wreck , killing all aboard, in June 2023.

It also has brought technological advances. In May 2023, a new type of digital scanning, using multiple images, gave us a three-dimensional view of the ship as it would look if it were lifted out of the water .

Why are people drawn to Titanic?

"There isn’t a simple answer," says Karen Kamuda, president of the Titanic Historical Society , which operates the Titanic Museum in Indian Orchard, Massachusetts.

Those who join the society are of "all ages and occupations, and their interests are multivariable," Kamuda says. Aside from their fascination with Titanic and its passengers and crew, their curiosity might include the sister ships Olympic and Britannic, the White Star Line, artifacts, and TV and movies.

"James Cameron’s 1997 film, ' Titanic ,' opened up a brand-new interest," Kamuda says. "The internet has helped spread the story worldwide."

Here are a few things you may not know about Titanic:

Titanic traveled less than 3,000 miles

Titanic was built at the Harland & Wolff shipbuilding company in Belfast, Ireland. After outfitting and sea trials, the ship left port for her maiden voyage.

From Belfast to the fatal iceberg strike, Titanic traveled about 2,555 nautical miles, or 2,940 land miles:

April 2, 1912 | 8 p.m.: Titanic leaves Belfast, sails to Southhampton, England (577 nm).

April 10, 1912 | noon: Titanic leaves Southhampton, sails to Cherbourg, France (88 nm).

April 10, 1912 | 8:10 p.m.: Titanic leaves Cherbourg, sails to Queenstown ( now known as Cobh ), Ireland (341 nm).

April 11, 1912 | 1:30 p.m.: Titanic leaves Queenstown for New York.

April 14, 1912 | 11:40 p.m.: Titanic strikes iceberg 1,549 nm from Queenstown.

April 15, 1912 | 2:20 a.m.: Titanic sinks about 400 miles south of Newfoundland, Canada.

Titanic's lifeboats were not filled to capacity

15-ton piece of wreckage recovered.

The largest piece of wreckage recovered from Titanic, above, is a 15-ton section of the hull measuring 26 feet by 12 feet. It's on display at Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas

The hull section was part of the starboard side of the ship , between the third and fourth funnels. It was lifted to the surface in 1998.

Museums keep Titanic's memory alive

A  number of museums offer visitors a look at hundreds of objects recovered from the wreck site. Here are a few:

And if you can't get to a Titanic museum, a traveling exhibit, Titanic. The Exhibition , with 200 items, may be coming to you after it leaves New York.
