Visit Omaha’s Instagram Takeover

Lisa Trudell Nebraska , Omaha Omaha 0

We are taking over Omaha! Visit Omaha is handing us the reigns to show you the city through our eyes (or rather lens) on their Visit Omaha Instagram account this weekend, April 9-10.

Disclaimer : Thanks to Visit Omaha for providing restaurant gift cards for our tour of the city.

A little mood lighting for our date night. We have always been photo junkies. We love capturing the moments and our memories in pictures. One of our favorite social media channels lately is Instagram. We love sharing special moments with our audience and sharing experiences.

Now, when you picture Omaha, you may think of our “world famous” zoo, the Old Market, or perhaps the College World Series. We will be showing you a few different areas of the city that you may not have seen, whether you live here or not. From North, South, and a little farther out in West Omaha, we’ll explore history, nature, shopping and, of course, food.

We probably won’t be having a Reuben this time around, but the sandwich sure looks good, doesn’t it? We’ll share things that perhaps you didn’t know about Omaha. For instance, did you know that the Reuben was first served here in Omaha?

Thinking about St. Patrick's Day next week…Did you know that the Reuben sandwich was first served in Omaha? My favorite that I've had so far has been from Crescent Moon. #midwest #reuben #Omaha A post shared by Travel Writers * Lisa Trudell (@thewalkingtourists) on Mar 10, 2016 at 5:46pm PST

The hashtag used by Visit Omaha is #OmahaWeekend . Now, in speaking with Visit Omaha, they indicated that this is the one that they encourage everyone to tag their pictures or tweets with on social media. I inquired, “but what if it isn’t the weekend?” Their response, when you are out and about in Omaha, you can get into a weekend frame of mind any day of the week.

This is certainly the way we felt when we went to the opening night of “Kinky Boots” on a Tuesday. The Omaha Orpheum brings in amazing shows and acts throughout the year.

18 Things No One Tells You Before Visiting Omaha Nebraska

visit omaha instagram

18 things no one tells you before visiting Omaha, Nebraska.

I spent the past weekend in Omaha, Nebraska on a coffee high ( too many cafes. not enough time ). It was my first time visiting Omaha and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I didn’t know much about the city ( apart from what I had read in books ).

So with adulting-crisis filled romance novels as my only reference, I kind of thought everyone in town was constantly falling in and out of and back in love, messily and wholly.

But that wasn’t the case. Omaha is a solid city.

It’s the birthplace of Malcolm X. It’s the home of the Reuben ( no matter what New Yorkers say ). It hosts the largest Sudanese refugee population in America ( so there are lots of amazing East African restaurants in-and-around the area ).

It’s an incredible city. Friendly. Welcoming. Lively. I can’t even begin to list all the things to see and do in the Gateway To The West ( though I try exactly that here ).

So if you want to make the most of your trip, here are eighteen things no one tells you…

About Parking While Visiting Omaha

flea market car seen whilst visiting Omaha

You’ll Probably Be Parking On The Street

I love when there is street parking available in any city ( street parking is usually an indicator that there are walkable blocks, which means there are sidewalks – wide sidewalks – and I don’t have to run across each street looking back-and-forth like a crazed chicken ).

And in Omaha, there is plenty of street parking . You’ll find street parking in most districts and occasionally the lots ( for the lots, especially in Old Market District, you’ll need to know your license number ).

You’ll Need Quarters

Old Market during the day

There’s an app for Omaha parking but as I’ve had a run of bad luck with city parking apps in the past ( I’ve just given up at this point. But if you’ve used the Omaha parking app and liked it, let me know in the comments below . I’ll try it next time ), I went with the old fashioned coin method.

You’ll want to bring at least $10 worth of quarters as most of the slots only accept George Washington’s face. Sorry, Lincoln. First come, first served.

Don’t Put In The Full Time Immediately

train car

Omahans know where all the free parking is in town. And if you ask, they’ll happily tell you.

Some restaurants even have little maps with a star when you enter that says “where you parked” and a “where you could have parked for free”.

I mean, can every business in every city do this? Here I am, shouting from the rooftops, thank you Omahans. You have no idea how much I appreciate this.

Omahans just get it. No one likes paid-for parking. So ask around and you’ll easily find a place to park for free.

But even if you do end up parking in a paid-for parking spot, it’s still pretty cheap ( $1 per hour ). Free on Sundays.

About Visiting Omaha In Winter

Visiting Omaha Central High School in winter

Omaha Gets Really Cold In Winter

Omaha gets really cold in winter, like bone-chilling, freezing, do-I-really-want-to-go-outside, I-think-I’ll-stay-home-and-read-a-book cold.

It’s constantly on The Weather Channel’s list of top ten coldest large cities in the United States. And y’all, that list includes Anchorage, Alaska.

The Best Time To Visit Is Fall

Cool architecture in Omaha

So if you’re planning on visiting Omaha during the off-season and want to take advantage of the price drops but aren’t a fan of deep snow ( like me ), late September and October are great times to visit .

I visited in February and the weather was decent ( but this isn’t always the case. some winters are bad. some winters are historically bad ).

About Finding Accommodation Before Visiting Omaha

Street of small to mid-sized buildings in Omaha

Hotels Are Dirt Cheap

But hotels are cheap in general . Fancier four-star hotels start at $120 a night , which is pretty much unheard of in the states ( where plush boutiques tend to cost an arm and a leg and a Shylock demanded pound of flesh ).

AirBnB Is Even Cheaper

AirBnb In Omaha

And the AirBnB listings are even cheaper than the hotels.

Whilst visiting Omaha, I booked a cute AirBnB in Benson for roughly $23 a night . It was a sweet little upstairs room with an adorable double bed and a tiny bookshelf.

Our host, Jenessa, also left a giant compendium ( in a glitzy gold glitter binder no less ) of local recommendations and travel tips!

About The Locals You’ll Meet While Visiting Omaha

Lights covering up a street view in Omaha

Omahans Love Sharing Their City

Jenessa’s Omaha guidebook was my introduction to Omaha locals. Omahans love sharing their city with travelers. When I say love, I mean really love.

Everywhere I went, the locals were incredibly happy to share the best recommendations ( from food to attractions to boutiques ) in-and-around town.

And I’m so glad because their friendliness 100% made my trip there magical ( sprinkle fairy dust here ).

Omahans give Southerners a run for their money .

About The Location Of Omaha

Smoke coming out of factory in Omaha

Omaha Is On The Border Of Iowa And Nebraska

Omaha sits on the border of Iowa and Nebraska . I found this out after entering directions for a coffee shop one morning.

Vyas: Are you sure this is the right shop? It’s in Iowa.

Me: It’s not in Iowa. It can’t be in Iowa.

Vyas: The address says Iowa.

Me: It’s two miles away from downtown Omaha. How in the world could it be in Iowa? Don’t be silly.

Vyas: It says Iowa.

Me: Google has it all wrong.

Two and a half miles later, we were in Iowa. Sorry, hon.

So if you’re looking for an easy, no-effort day trip to another state , consider western Iowa ( like Council Bluffs ).

There’s A Reason You Get 1-800 Calls From Omaha

Train car mirror selfie whilst visiting Omaha

In the mid-19th century, travel companies ( hotels and rental car agencies ) wanted to stop depending on connect calls. Hence, the rise of the toll-free number.

With the story of 1-800 came the tale of call centers. And the very first call centers were located near strip malls in Bedford , a neighborhood twenty minutes away from downtown Omaha . The number of call centers grew and grew and eventually, Omaha had a new moniker – Res City.

Because there were so many call centers, Omaha was able to generate 1-800 numbers fast. Really fast. The turnaround time in Omaha was a day versus a week elsewhere .

About Giving Back While Visiting Omaha

Coffee from a shop that uses TAGG

You Can Give Back Through TAGG

TAGG is an app that’s popular in the Omaha area. You’ll see a lot of businesses sporting signs for it in their front window.

The app isn’t Omaha specific but it’s one that’s championed by the city. TAGG stands for Together A Greater Good ( which sounds like Gellert Grindelwald’s rally cry but I promise, the app has the best intentions for Muggles everywhere ). It’s a way to give back after making a purchase in the local community.

Once you download the app and create an account, you’ll be able to select a charity of your choice.

After that, go ahead and order as usual while dining out. Ask to print out your receipt. Scan it with TAGG and a percentage of your portions will go to the charity you selected earlier.

I had never heard of the TAGG app before visiting Omaha but it’s now one of my all-time favorite apps!

About The Food In Omaha

farm to table movement in Omaha

Farm-To-Table Movement Is Big Here

Speaking of restaurants, the farm-to-table movement is big in Omaha , which makes sense considering that Nebraska is 93% farmland .

But I was still taken aback by how many restaurants offered fully farm-to-table menus. There’s Kitchen Table. Block 16. Society 1854. The Boiler Room.

There are even farm-to-table ice-creameries .

Ice Cream Is Also A Big Deal

standing in line for ice cream whilst visiting Omaha

Omaha has multiple ice-cream joints ( each equally popular. most locals are split between Team eCreamery and Team Coneflower ).

Our first night in Omaha, it was below freezing. 28 degrees Fahrenheit. We were walking around the Blackstone District, a hub of eateries, and saw a line tracing around a historic block.

Locals were huddled in big, fluffy jackets and waiting in line in the below-freezing cold for…. ice-cream? I didn’t understand it at all. Who has ice-cream in the winter? Omahans, apparently. Lots of them.

So I shrugged my shoulders and thought, why not join the queue and see what all the fuss is about ( because I’m equal parts crazy and curious )?

Because Butter Brickle Lives Up To The Hype

visit omaha instagram

But it’s really no surprise why when you taste butter brickle ( Next time I visit Omaha, I’m bringing a freezer and stocking it with butter brickle and taking the carton straight to Texas ).

When I tasted butter brickle, all the jagged pieces of the why-eat-ice-cream-now mystery fell into place.

OMG. This is it. This is the best thing on the planet. I’d be here if it was zero degrees.

About What To Do While Visiting Omaha

Joslyn Art museum in Omaha

The Museums Take A While To See

I allotted three hours for each museum whilst visiting Omaha and I really should have allotted a half-to-full day .

Each of the big museums in Omaha ( Joslyn, Union Station ) are huge. They’re multiple floors and long and wide and take time to fully see.

And the museums in Omaha are great at giving context behind the displays .

For each of the works of art at the Joslyn Museum , the placards detail what the painting techniques are, what the techniques mean, and how they affect the painting as a whole. It’s like every display is a mini-art lesson.

It’s less about the artist themselves. And more about what they did technically that made them so great ( though I still have my doubts about Pollock ).

You Can Go Rare Book Shopping

collection of rare books and coins at the Durham Museum

Jackson Street Booksellers specializes in rare and out-of-print books . It’s a used bookstore, a little chaotic and a little rustic.

Jackson Street Booksellers is a big shop . It’s undergone multiple expansions over the years and is still growing.

The bookstore is a favorite of many Omaha locals and travelers alike. Even Silver Linings Playbook director David O. Russell has raved about i t.

Although most of the works are collectible editions, there are a few affordable titles in-house as well.

Omaha Is A Dog-Friendly City

dog in a cafe in Omaha

Although the Nebraska Food Code prohibits any live animals on food establishments, Douglas County, where Omaha is located, has issued a dog-friendly patio variance ( yes. just yes ).

So from quick-service coffee shops to upscale restaurants, you’ll see a lot of dog-friendly location stickers around the Omaha area.

Most of these stickers are provided by Omaha.dog , a website that catalogs all the dog-friendly spots in the city.

The blog was initially started as a push to make Omaha more dog-friendly and today, the city ( by our unofficial claim ) is one of the dog-friendliest places in America.

There Are More Districts Than Old Market

districts in old market Omaha

Old Market is one of the top tourist spots in Omaha. It’s a complex pathway of red-brick roads and red-brick buildings . You’ll see antique stores by the dozen, a few coffee shops, some restaurants, and more antique stores.

But Old Market isn’t the only neighborhood in Omaha. There’s Dundee and Benson and Gifford Park and Blackstone ( my favorite ).

Each neighborhood has a completely different air. Pass the close of one and you’ll be looped into a different part of town.

Dundee is historic. Benson is gentrifying. Gifford Park is splat with street art. And Blackstone offers contemporary takes on classics .

If you’re planning on visiting Omaha, you’ll want to explore as many districts as possible. I traveled to five of the districts over the weekend and am saving the rest for my next trip to Omaha!

Planning a trip to  Omaha ? Here are our top recommended hotels :

  • Magnolia Hotel:  boutique property conveniently situated blocks away from Old Market ( read reviews & compare hotel prices here )
  • Kimpton Cottonwood Hotel:  situated in the revamped historic Blackstone district, Kimpton Cottonwood Hotel is all elegant, understated Midwestern glamour. There’s also a really chic pool – just saying ( read reviews & compare hotel prices here )
  • Hotel Deco:  stunning art deco hotel in Omaha ( read reviews & compare hotel prices here )

Renowned as one of the best zoos in the United States, the Omaha Zoo and Aquarium is a must-visit!

If I could say one word to describe this zoo, it would be WOW.

This zoo is definitely an experience.

There are endless things to see and do that you could easily spend a day and a half to two days here.

As you get ready for your trip to the Omaha Zoo (also known as the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium) , here are four valuable tips to make sure your visit is an incredible adventure, complete with all of the practical advice you need!

Table of Contents

1. Plan What You Want to do Ahead of Time

As I mentioned above there are so many incredible exhibits and unique attractions to enjoy at the Omaha zoo, making it quite a challenge to experience everything in just one day.

If you have just a single day to explore the zoo, I recommend prioritizing the key attractions you don’t want to miss.

I have compiled a list of some of these attractions below for you.

You can also download a map of the zoo to help with your planning!

Alaskan Adventure Splash Ground

The Alaskan Adventure Splash Ground is a fantastic water playground that brings the Alaskan Wilderness to life!

It has a humongous humpback whale that is quite impressive.

Its other sculptures within the spray ground area include puffins, brown bears, sea lions, orcas, and salmon.

Additionally, there are a variety of unique water features for visitors to enjoy.

You could easily spend half a day at the Alaskan Adventure Splash Ground.

If this is something that you plan to do, I would figure out how you want to work it into your day with all of the other attractions and exhibits you plan to experience.

Must Know Information

The Alaskan Adventure Splash Ground is located adjacent to the carousel as well as the playground at Glacier Bay Landing. This makes this entire area of Omaha’s zoo the perfect family friendly activity hub.

If you plan to spend time at the Alaskan Adventure Spray Ground during your visit to the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, make sure to come prepared with swim suits and towels.

It is also important to know that there is a family changing area right next to the splash ground.

Bay Family Children’s Adventure Trails

The Bay Family Children’s Adventure Trails is an extraordinary space that is a destination in itself.

This incredible area lets visitors of all ages learn through immersive nature play, making it a must-visit destination within the zoo.

Crazily, this area was not on our radar on our visit to the Omaha Zoo as we just happened upon it when we were about to leave.

It was an epic surprise!

Expert Recommendation

I strongly recommend putting the Bay Family Children’s Adventure Trails on your must-visit attraction list. You can easily spend an hour or more at this amazing spot!

Some of the highlights of the Bay Family Children’s Adventure Trails include the colossal treehouse that you can climb, slide, and explore its lofty branches, little water ponds, and the whimsical play area with giant bugs, a spiderweb, bee hive, and butterfly swing.

Sculpture of a monarch butterfly on a stem

The Bay Family’s Children’s Adventure Trails area is extremely family friendly as there are air-conditioned restrooms as well as a baby care area that includes changing stations, private nursing rooms, a microwave, and two family restrooms with small toilets for young children.

There is even a common area for families to relax for a few minutes.

The Bay Family’s Children’s Adventure Trails exhibit is located closest to the zoo’s North Entrance.

Henry Doorly Zoo Aquarium

The aquarium is always a must-see stop for our family.

Here you will be mesmerized by the diverse collection of aquatic life from all over the world.

It is quite spectacular!

My boys love watching the penguins and also seeing the shark tunnel.

The Sea Turtle Cafe, located right outside the aquarium, is a fantastic place to grab a bite to eat. This outdoor cafe has many tables for guests and offers shade on a hot summer day. The Sea Turtle Cafe also has a good variety of food options on its menu.

visit omaha instagram

Gorilla Valley

Gorilla Valley is an extraordinary immersive exhibit where visitors can get an amazing glimpse into the lives and behaviors of these intriguing animals.

Not only is the exhibit gorgeous with its waterfalls, streams and trees, but it also allows guests to literally get face to face with the gorillas.

This exhibit is one of our family’s favorite attractions.

Gorilla Valley has a new entrance on the north side of the exhibit which is across from the aviary.

On our visit to the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, we entered the zoo at its North Entrance. From the North Entrance we immediately took a left towards Glacier Bay Landing and then proceeded past the splash ground and carousel to Owen Sea Lion Shores, and finally to Gorilla Valley. There are obviously many other options of routes to take depending on your preferred list of attractions and exhibits to visit, but this is the one we took.

Young child making the same pose as the statue of a gorilla next to him.

Sea Lion Shores

Sea Lion Shores is another one of the Henry Doorly Zoo’s incredible immersive exhibits.

This exhibit offers a captivating look into the aquatic world of the sea lions.

Sea Lion Shores has sandy beaches, shimmering pools, and interactive presentations.

visit omaha instagram

This exhibit was one of the first places we visited at the Omaha Zoo.

We spent quite a bit of time at Sea Lion Shores as the kids were super excited to see this amazing exhibit.

The kids loved playing on the sandy beaches and going through the caves.

There is even a hidden crevice for kids to crawl through with an underwater viewing window.

This zoo is incredible, and you can easily lose track of time at any one exhibit or attraction. We spent a ton of time at the Sea Lion exhibit because the kids were enjoying it so much. If you only have a day to visit, I would recommend not spending too much time at any one exhibit. While you still want to soak in each exhibit and not feel rushed, keep in mind that you do need to keep moving as well in order to see everything that you want.

Rides at the Omaha Zoo

The zoo train is a favorite ride for visitors to the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium.

It gives you a good overview of the zoo and its incredible exhibits.

One downfall of the train is that it usually has a long wait.

You will need to weigh whether or not you want to spend time waiting in line to ride the train or use that time to see something else.

We opted not to ride the train so we could enjoy time at additional exhibits.

Train Boarding Locations

You can board the train at a number of locations including Omaha’s Depot near the splash ground and carousel as well as near the African Lodge. Omaha’s Depot is closest to the zoo’s North Entrance.

The Carousel is a whimsical attraction perfect for young children as well as those young at heart!

Carousel rides are $4 each. You can purchase tickets at the kiosk right across from it.

Two boys smiling as they are riding the carousel at the Omaha zoo.

Skyfari which is an open-air chair lift provides visitors with a unique aerial view of the Omaha zoo.

Open only Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Skyfari offers visitors a bird’s-eye view of the zoo’s amazing scenery and animal exhibits.

Skyfari’s roundtrip rides begin at the platform adjacent to the Butterfly and Insect Pavilion. Riders under age 12 must ride with an adult.

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium also offers visitors a narrated tram ride tour as a way to efficiently see the zoo’s extensive grounds.

Guests may choose to pay for a round trip ride or pay separately for each stop.

The tram ride has four stops total.

Other Animal Exhibits

The Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium boasts an incredible collection of animal exhibits.

Each of these exhibits offer guests an extraordinary look into the world in which these animals live.

From the Desert Dome to Lied Jungle, each of the exhibits at the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium are sure to blow you away.

Additionally, the zoo offers opportunities for animal encounters including feeding the giraffes, goats, stingrays, and the touch pool in the aquarium.

When planning out your day at the zoo, you may also want to factor in some time for climbing statues as well as small playgrounds you come across. There is also an old helicopter and jeep that the kids can climb in.

2. Save Time & Money by Bringing Your Own Food & D rinks

You CAN bring in your own food or drinks in a bag or cooler into the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium.

I love using my insulated tote bag to store snacks and to keep drinks cool in addition to my easy to carry soft cooler .

If you want to make the most of your time at this zoo, I would highly recommend bringing your own lunch, drinks, and snacks.

We did not do this, and we spent way too much time waiting for food and drinks.

For example, one time we waited in a line for 45 min to just get soft drinks and some chicken fingers.

Many of the places to eat require you to order at a kiosk, and then you have to get in a pick-up line to get your order.

These lines were so long and when you have hungry and/or thirsty kids that can cause some major frustration.

3. Bring a Swimsuit, Towel, and a Change of Clothes

Kids love to get wet, and there are plenty of opportunities to do so at Omaha’s zoo so I would suggest being prepared with a swimsuit, towels, and a change of clothes.

The splash ground is so huge and fun that your kids will surely want to experience it.

Even if you don’t think you are going to do the splash ground, there are some water features in the Children’s Adventure Trails area plus there is the sand area by the sea lions.

The kids are likely to get wet and/or dirty somehow during your visit to the zoo, but that is half the fun, right?!

4. Take Breaks Throughout the Day & Keep a Patient M indset

With 160 acres, the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is massive, and there seems to be endless things to see and do.

As a result, there are a lot of people and many things going on.

The lines for food and for some of the attractions and exhibits can be long as well.

Additionally, there is also lots of walking.

To keep everyone in the family from getting overtired, I would suggest taking a break when necessary as well as carrying your own snacks and drinks to keep everyone energized.

I know there is so much to see and not always enough time, but it is so important to take some breaks throughout the day.

Keep in mind that you might not get to see everything, and you may not get to spend as much time as you would like in a certain area.

It is important to keep everyone’s expectations as reasonable as possible.

Remember to be patient with the crowds as well as with your family.

Playground structure that looks like a building with climbing elements and a slide.

Plan Your Visit to the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium Today

The Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is an absolute blast and an incredible experience for the entire family.

It is an impressive zoo that has so many immersive exhibits and thrilling things to experience.

My biggest tip is to plan your must see areas ahead of time.

The Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium offers two convenient entrances. One is considered the main entrance while the other is the North Entrance. The North Entrance will bring you into the zoo near the Bay Family Children’s Adventure Trails as well as Glacier Bay Landing. I recommend checking out the zoo map to determine which entrance to use according to your plan for the day. Additionally, depending on where you park, one of the entrances may simply be closer to you than the other!

Dallas Cowboys v New England Patriots

The decision to bring back Mike McCarthy feels like eons ago for the Dallas Cowboys . In some ways this offseason feels like it just started (probably because the Cowboys have not done much), in other ways the playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers seems like a lifetime ago. Maybe what we are experiencing is what Shane Falco described as quicksand in The Replacements .

Either way the NFL draft begins next week and it offers the last significant chance for this team to put itself in a position to properly contend in 2024. If they do not contend next season it is assumed that proverbial heads will roll, likely starting with head coach Mike McCarthy.

While McCarthy is returning for a fifth season with the Cowboys, the year in question is the last one on the contract that he initially signed with the team. Jerry Jones has knowingly and willfully set his coach up for a contract year and all of the drama that comes with that (this is the third coach contract in a row that Jones has allowed to reach this point as it happened twice with Jason Garrett) and wouldn’t you know it, the drama is here.

The Dallas Cowboys are on Bill Belichick’s list of teams he would like to coach

Among coaching news across the league this offseason. it was notable that Bill Belichick did not find a new home after he and the New England Patriots went their separate ways.

It appeared as if Belichick was set to join the Atlanta Falcons , but things fell through and they ultimately went with Raheem Morris. Our immediate futures could still have Belichick in them as he may or may not do some sort of media work, but many assume that whatever he does in 2024 will be a bridge back to the world of coaching.

ESPN published a massive piece on Wednesday that took a look at the fallout between Belichick and the Patriots and what could or could not come next for the greatest coach of all time. The article is worth your time in general, but you should know that it was specifically said that the Dallas Cowboys are among the teams Belichick is interested in coaching if he returns to the NFL sidelines.

In the coming weeks, Belichick is expected to sign a deal to do analysis for Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions, which produces ESPN’s “ManningCast” during Monday Night Football. He is believed to be biding his time until next January for openings on teams he has told confidants he would be interested in coaching: the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants . A source who spoke with a longtime friend of Belichick said the friend wonders if the coach will have another opportunity: “I don’t think Bill Belichick will ever be a head coach again in the National Football League,” the friend said. “Unless it’s [for] Jerry Jones.”

Belichick famously served as the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants through their first two Super Bowl seasons in the 1980s. He has always shared a deep affection for the team so it makes sense that they could be viewed as a home to return to.

Including the Cowboys with the Philadelphia Eagles as the other two choices certainly makes for some ripe NFC East drama. We thought things got heated when the rivals competed for Shaq Leonard last season, imagine if they were both vying for the GOAT?

Dallas and Philly have been among the more successful regular-season teams in the NFL as of late (the Eagles obviously won the Super Bowl much more recently) so they are also logical dots to connect Belichick too, especially with both teams having head coaches that seem to be on warm seats for different reasons. We greatly enjoyed the Eagles completely collapsing over the final weeks of the season while Nick Sirianni did nothing to stop it.

These situations force the people in charge to consider a potential change in general, but when someone like Bill Belichick is available your mind cannot help but wander. According to the ESPN piece that seemed to happen more for the Eagles than the Cowboys late last season, but Dallas was involved nonetheless due to Belichick’s relationship with Jerry Jones.

Still, there was chatter in league circles that Philadelphia and Belichick could be a match. Despite some owners and executives believing the game had passed Belichick by, the Eagles felt he still had his fastball; he had nearly beaten them in the 2023 season opener with an inferior team. There’s also a belief that Belichick will coach only until he gets 15 more wins, enough to pass Don Shula as the winningest coach in NFL history. Though not seriously considering a move, Lurie wondered to a confidant: Was it worth overhauling the building, changing personnel and philosophies on everything from training staff to salary cap structure, for someone who might coach only two years? “You’ll have to start over again,” said a source with firsthand knowledge of the Eagles’ thinking. “Who would replace him? He hasn’t had a good record of developing coaches. They were afraid that he’ll have changed everything and every person, and [then] you’ll be starting from scratch again. He didn’t demand those changes, but they felt like, if we hire him, we have to give everything to him and trust how he does it.” Dallas was another potential suitor. On paper, the Cowboys seemed to make sense: Belichick and Jerry Jones are decades-long friends, and both are in win-now mode. Nobody is better than Belichick at converting a talented roster into a championship team. And Belichick told a friend that he liked the idea of sticking it to the Krafts by working for Jones. But Jones, for all his flash, bluster and vows this offseason to go “all-in,” is change-averse when it comes to head coaches. He decided quickly after Dallas’ blowout exit in the wild-card round to let Mike McCarthy coach the final year of his contract.

Many Cowboys fans have pushed back against the idea of Belichick out of fear that he would want to control everything and therefore take over process that the team is successful at like how they approach the NFL draft. That is a fair concern.

But in an overall sense the Cowboys are relatively lost at sea. Would it not be worth it to bring in a new captain, one with experience in turbulent waters, in hopes of finding land? Again, the mind cannot help but wander.
