How to Tour the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank

Have you ever dreamed of getting to tour the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank? This is one of the hardest studios in Los Angeles to get to see. There are only three studios that offer tours that anyone can buy tickets for. Those studios are Paramount , Sony and Warner Bros . The main ways that you can tour the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank are through D23 Events, Disney Movie Insider Rewards, and Adventures By Disney.

What is D23? It is The Official Disney Fan Club! Earlier this year I attended the D23 Expo which I highly recommend. You can be a general member for free or a gold member for a price. For $99.99 a year, plus shipping and taxes, you can join the club. There will be a few free member events throughout the year but most activities require you to spend more money to attend. However, if you really want to tour the studio you’ll most likely find the price tag worth the investment.

At least two times a year club members can purchase tickets to tour the studio. This tour always sells out though so you do have to pay close attention to when it goes on sale. The best way to stay informed is to check the D23 events page on their website often. The pricing starts at $99 and goes up from there. Pricing is more for general members (the free membership), and it is more expensive for weekend tours as well. You can find tickets and available tour times through the D23 event page when availability permits.

What does this tour entail? According to the D23 website, you can expect a 2 and 1/2 hour tour which includes a visit to Walt Disney’s Office and the archives.

Once you create an account with Disney Movie Insider Rewards and start earning points you can redeem them for great rewards. One of the rewards is to tour the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. This reward costs 12,000 points so it will take a while to earn enough.

Walt Disney Studios: Take a tour of the working lot

visit walt disney studios burbank

Pausing at the intersection of Mickey Ave. and Dopey Drive – which doubles as Pluto's Corner – it's evident that The Walt Disney Studios isn't merely a place where movies are made. To many, it's hallowed ground. To be able to walk among the buildings where so much creativity has been flourishing and where so much of the cultural zeitgeist has been forged for generations is a wonderful and rare treat.

But not that rare. You too could stroll down Mickey Ave. and ogle the history-making studios.

Unlike Universal, Warner Bros., and other movie lots, The Walt Disney Company does not offer regular public tours of its studios. But there are two ways you could make it past the gates. As part of its Southern California itinerary, Adventures by Disney takes vacationers to the Burbank lot for a guided visit. Or, premium members of Disney's official D23 fan club can sign up for exclusive studio tours, which the club presents a few times a year.

Jeffrey Epstein, director of corporate communications at Disney, took me on a modified version of the club's two-and-a-half-hour tour. On the day I visited, there didn't appear to be any major production activity, and the lot seemed fairly hushed. But the nostalgia-tinged grounds screamed at every turn. "So many of the things you see here on the studio lot are icons in their own right," Epstein says.

The Burbank lot, which dates back to 1940, is not Disney's original studio. (Walt Disney arrived in Hollywood in 1923, hence the name of the fan club.) The company moved remnants of its earlier Hyperion Studio, where Mickey Mouse took shape and the world's first animated feature, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , was produced, to the current spot where they remain to this day. Those remnants include a production bungalow and a building identified as "Shorts," which refers to the animated shorts that were once Disney's stock in trade.

The animation building is among the highlights of the tour. This is where many of the company's legendary films, starting with Dumbo , were crafted. The walls are lined with storyboards, model sheets, and other reminders of movies such as Lady and the Tramp ,  Bambi,  and Aladdin . Epstein pointed out the building's long hallways and its many wings, which were designed to maximize natural light for the artists.

There is an underground tunnel that connects the animation building to the inking and painting building. The passageway helped protect the artists' hand-drawn cels from the elements when they were delivered between the buildings. Legions of inkers and painters (all of whom were women, by the way) painstakingly finished each cel by hand and prepared them to be photographed. The inking process, even for hand-drawn animation, is now done using computers, and the building is primarily used for offices today. Salvaged jars of the brightly colored inks are nonetheless on display.

The studio's plush, 400-seat theatre is used to screen films that are both in production and have been completed. The theatre occasionally hosts screenings for critics and special events for D23 members.

There are a number of soundstages that are used for live action productions. One of them is dedicated to Julie Andrews who filmed both The Princess Diaries  and Mary Poppins  there. Many of the exterior scenes for the 2013 movie, Saving Mr. Banks , which is about the making of the seminal Mary Poppins , were shot on location at the studios. There is a sense of authenticity as Tom Hanks, who portrays Walt Disney in the film, makes his way around the lot, because it retains the look and feel of the era when Mary Poppins  was made.

The producers of Saving Mr. Banks  had to build a set for the scenes inside Walt Disney's office since the actual office had long been dismantled. But in 2015, the company reproduced the office suite in its original location on the third floor of the animation building. It is now another highlight of the D23 tour.

Epstein says that the company's archives team meticulously replicated the space as it looked when Walt Disney died in 1966, including quirks such as books that were left upside down. "Although it's a place that is of the 1960s, it serves as a place of inspiration for D23 members," he notes. "You can see that Walt was looking forward. There was a map of what would become Walt Disney World, for example."

Another feature of the suite is its custom-designed piano. Richard Sherman, who wrote the music for Mary Poppins  and other Disney projects with his brother Robert, has returned to play on the piano that he used to preview songs for Walt back in the day.

A visit to the archives department, which is dedicated to documenting and preserving the history of the company, is also part of the tour. Among the artifacts on display the day I visited the archives were an animator's desk, original birthday portraits of Mickey Mouse drawn by legendary animator and Imagineer John Hench, and Walt Disney's Disneyland employee badge.

While he's been gone for decades, Walt Disney still looms large at the studio that bears his name. A statue of Walt and Mickey Mouse stands at the center of Legends Plaza. The area also features handprints of many of the celebrities, creative professionals, and others who have made contributed their talents to the company.

The plaza leads to the Team Disney building, which serves as the company's corporate headquarters. The fanciful structure, which was designed by noted architect Michael Graves, includes statues of the Seven Dwarfs built into the upper reaches of its exterior. They symbolize, according to Epstein, their oversized role in "holding up the studios from the beginning."

Snow White  was an artistic and cultural landmark, and the profits from the highly successful film were used to build the Burbank studios. But another architectural nod to the company's past is even more apt. Etched into the tiles of the entranceway to the Team Disney building is an evocative, larger-than-life photo of a young Walt Disney standing in a doorway. Bathed in a yellow spotlight next to him is the silhouette of Mickey Mouse. They were the true foundation of the company.

Visiting the Walt Disney Studios Lot

by Disney Park Princess | Feb 5, 2019 | Adventures by Disney , Disneyland , Other Disney Parks Around The World | 8 comments

Walt Disney Studios Lot

If you’re a Disney fan (and I’m guessing you are if you’re reading this blog!), then I’ll bet you’ve always wanted to visit the headquarters of the Walt Disney Company – the Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, CA. There’s just something so special about the location where Walt himself worked and dreamed up all of our favorite movies and the US parks.

Since I live in Southern California I’ve been lucky enough to visit the Walt Disney Studios (affectionately called The Lot), many times, and I have to tell you – it’s as special and as magical as you’d imagine. And no matter how many times I get to visit it just never loses that sense of awe for me. Here are some of the things I love to see that I think makes ‘The Lot’ so special.

SOUNDSTAGES

Unless you work in ‘the industry’ I’m sure you don’t get to spend a lot of time at a working movie studio. Which makes it so cool when you visit The Lot! You can wander around the soundstages. If you’re lucky enough, you might see a TV show or film in production. Of course you can’t take photos, but getting to see a piece of Hollywood up close and personal is priceless. And then when you see that episode on TV months later you’ll remember what it really looked like and how much work went into just that one scene.

It gives you such a new appreciation for the entertainment industry. Plus, as Disney fans, it’s a must to stop by Soundstage 2 and take a photo with the plaque dedicating it as the Julie Andrews Stage. Because that’s where both Mary Poppins and the Princess Diaries were filmed!

LEGENDS PLAZA

Maybe you’ve heard of Disney Legends, individuals who have made an impact on Disney films and parks. Did you know that there’s a ceremony to induct these legends and that they cast their hand prints in bronze? On The Lot all of these plaques are displayed in an area called Legends Plaza. It’s an open air patio with columns decorated with the plaques. It’s so special to be able to walk around and see how your hands measure up to some of your favorite actors and Imagineers. In the center of the plaza you’ll find the only Partners Statue (of Walt & Mickey) that you can get up close to, touch, and take your photo with.

It’s a really wonderful place to grab a coffee and just sit and take in how many legendary people are represented in the plaza. Get an up close and personal view of the famed Legends Award. If you look close enough at this amazing sculpture, you might find Cinderella’s Gus Gus! Don’t forget to look up at the striking architecture of the Team Disney building. There you’ll see the Seven Dwarfs holding up the roof. This is a nod to the fact that it was the profits from Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs that made building The Lot possible!

visit walt disney studios burbank

THE COMMISSARY

Sure, it’s just a cafeteria, but there is something inexplicably cool about getting to eat where Walt Disney did. And where current Disney employees eat every day! You somehow feel part of a special club. Plus, the food here is really good! There’s a sandwich station, a taco station, a salad bar, a grill with burgers and the like, plus several other stations where the hot offerings change daily. But there’s always one staple no matter what day of the week it is – every day the commissary serves up Walt’s Chili, the original recipe that Walt himself enjoyed all of the time! Where else are you going to get the chance to eat like Walt did?

visit walt disney studios burbank

WALT DISNEY ARCHIVES

Getting to see bits of Disney history is pretty special, and housed on The Lot is the Walt Disney Archives. And yes – you get to visit! In the lobby of their building the Archives does a rotating exhibit in display cases of some of their assets. Sometimes it relates to a movie, other times a character. Once when I visited there was a display on Disney shoes!

You can also enter the Archives reading room, where you’ll see a display of an original animator’s desk as well as other displays. One time I got to see the very first Mickey Mouse watch ever created! And if you’re lucky, they’ll even pull out one of Walt’s (many) Oscars for you to hold. It’s true – you can’t believe how heavy those things are!

visit walt disney studios burbank

WALT’S OFFICE

There are few places more breathtaking and special to me than Walt Disney’s office suite. Can you imagine being able to stand in the space where Walt worked? It’s really one of the most special opportunities. A few years ago the Walt Disney Archives restored Walt’s office suite on the third floor of the Old Animation building and now it can be visited on certain tours. You will get to step inside both of Walt’s offices – the Formal, where he entertained guests, and the Informal, where he actually got down to business.

You’ll see the piano the Sherman Brothers used to play songs for him. You’ll see his private kitchen – complete with working retractable wall! Every single thing in his office suite was restored by the archives exactly how Walt left it the last day he was there. I’m talking the exact number of paper clips, the location of all papers, and even the books on his book shelf. I’ve been lucky enough to visit several times and I never get over that feeling of awe. It’s incredibly special!

visit walt disney studios burbank

How to Get A Tour

The Walt Disney Studios actually isn’t open to the public, so unless you know someone who works there you can’t just pop in for a visit. However, recently there became two ways for the rest of us to be able to visit! D23, the official Disney fan club, now offers monthly tours of The Lot. You do need to be a member of the fan club, and then you’ll need to sign up for tickets. But then you’ll be treated to a multi-hour tour of The Lot and all of the special places I mentioned above.

visit walt disney studios burbank

The other is Adventures by Disney’s Backstage Magic tour. Guests on this Adventure spend a morning touring around The Lot. They learn all about the history, eating lunch in the commissary, and of course taking time to shop in the Studio store! That might be worth it alone to book this vacation, but then you’ll get to visit the Imagineering campus AND the Jim Henson studios. It is literally the ultimate backstage pass!

Have you been lucky enough to visit the Walt Disney Studios? If so, I’d love to hear your favorite memory in the comments below!

Alex Fischbeck

Hi Heather! I am so incredibly jealous that you were able to do this. Can I ask how? I’ve been researching and can’t figure out any way that I can tour it, especially since Adventures by Disney doesn’t have any trips until 2022 and D23 has no tour dates.

Heather Coursen

I know right now all tours to the Studio lot have been suspended due to Covid. However, in the past you were able to visit by booking a tour with a D23 membership, doing the Adventures by Disney Southern California tour, or by redeeming Disney Movie Rewards points for a tour. Hopefully you’ll be able to visit in the future!

Nelisse tig

Hi I just bought D23 tickets- where do they want us to park? Is there a parking structure

Sara Varney

Hi Nelisee, Did you buy tickets for the D23 Expo in Anaheim next August? The Anaheim Convention Center does have parking but the price is not included in your tickets.

Nelisse

Sorry I should have clarified- my bad- I purchased studio tour tickets thru D23 to tour the Burbank Lot- do they have parking onsite for visitors?

Yes, there is parking for official visitors on the studio lot. Have fun!

Amber Clark

I just purchased a D23 tour for February. I have a couple of questions. First, how much time do you have to shop in the Disney Studio Store and Employee Center? Also, are you able to eat at the studio after the tour ends? Lastly, do they rush you out at the end or are they somewhat flexible with the time they give you? TIA!

I have not done the D23 Studio Tour yet, just with Adventures by Disney. I believe they are similar! We had just a few minutes to shop and we were able to eat at the commissary. The timing is quite stric and guests are not given time to explore on their own.

Hope this helps!

Come with us now as we take a step inside Walt Disney’s office at the Walt Disney Studio in Burbank, CA!

Spotlight Talk Recap: The Burbank Studio

The museum’s fifth gallery is billed as “We Were in a New Business.” It’s a phrase Walt used to describe the new reality his company entered into upon the astounding box office success of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) . Undoubtedly, a significant symbol of this reality was the new studio Walt built. For May’s Spotlight Talks, our Museum Educators illuminated our guests to the story behind this special facility.

Until the late 30s, The Walt Disney Studios called Los Angeles’ Silver Lake District its home. Starting in 1927, artists created animated shorts depicting Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Mickey Mouse, and many beloved characters of the Silly Symphonies series from a collection of structures on Hyperion Avenue. But as the business grew, the workplace struggled to keep up. Rooms were added onto existing buildings and drawing boards were set up in nearly any available space. Even whole production units were moved offsite, as was the case with Bambi (1942)   when its artists set up shop in Hollywood.

The revenue from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs enabled work to begin on a new facility, one in which all employees could be housed on the same lot comfortably. For the site of their business’ new home, Walt and Roy chose fifty-one acres along Buena Vista Street in nearby Burbank, about seven miles northwest from the Hyperion facility.

Walt planned the new studio facility in consultation with his brother Roy, his long-time technical advisor Bill Garity, and his studio architect/contractor Frank Crowhurst. To help create the new studio, Walt partnered with the famed architect and designer Kem Weber. Details, from the size of the windows to the shape of the desks, were carefully crafted to place the needs of the employees first. Buildings were constructed for specific parts of the filmmaking process and underground tunnels optimized efficiency.

The staff began moving into the new Studio over the holidays between December 1939 and January 1940. The last building (the Sound Transfer Building) was completed and occupied in October 1940. Climate controlled environments brought relief to artists who had previously sweltered in the summertime heat of the Hyperion studio. Other amenities, like an onsite restaurant and plentiful lawn areas, made life enjoyable. On the rooftop of the animation building was the Penthouse Club, in which members could take steam baths, exercise in a gym under the watchful eye of a trainer, or enjoy the soda fountain.

Although it was state of the art, the new studio unwittingly signaled a change from a family, small business-like atmosphere to that of a corporate enterprise. Various departments were compartmentalized and the ranks of employees swelled with new arrivals. This transition was not an easy one and it was made all the more difficult by World War II. Then the postwar period ushered in a new chapter at the studio, marked by more than just animated features. Live-action films and television shows soon became part of Disney’s repertoire. Projects like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)   and Mickey Mouse Club made frequent use of the (at the time) four soundstages.

Overall, many of Walt’s values were reflected in the studio. His consistent embrace of innovation made this studio a facility that was ahead of its time. In addition, Walt’s belief in diversification was reflected in the kinds of entertainment produced there. In the end, the studio visualized and reinforced Walt’s conviction that his team was truly “in a new business.”

Time stands still: A look inside Walt Disney’s office

I n the heart of the Walt Disney Studios campus, in Burbank, California, there’s a towering building, where the Seven Dwarfs hold the roof over their heads, like the caryatids in ancient Greece. The Michael Graves-designed structure is corporate headquarters, where Bob Iger, Josh D’Amaro, and other key executives run the $215 billion entertainment giant.

Off to the left is a smaller building, with a nondescript “Animation” sign above the door. If you walk through the doors of this building, climb the stairs to the third floor and find your way to Suite 3H, you will have discovered history. From 1940 to 1966, that was Walt Disney’s office—and the creative heart of the company.

Stepping into Walt’s office is like stepping back in time. Over the years, it has been used by a number of executives, ranging from CEO Michael Eisner to producer/performer (and former teen idol) Shaun Cassidy to Desperate Housewives creator, Mark Cherry (who reportedly painted the entire office red). In 2015, however, the office was painstakingly restored by the company’s archives department and studio craftsmen (even the curtains are original), to become a place of inspiration for the company.

That was all thanks to the work of Dave Smith, who would go on to start the Walt Disney Archives. In 1970, he went into Walt’s office and photographed it extensively—taking note of where everything was located and how it was arranged before it was emptied.

The office is an area that’s largely off-limits now. It’s not part of the standard studio tour—and many Disney employees have never even been inside. Fast Company was invited to take a peek during a recent visit to the studio.

Today, the office is almost exactly the same as it was the day Walt died, down to the order and position of the books on the shelves. And while there’s plenty of history and nostalgia, it’s hard to stand there and not feel the creative energy crackling.

You enter, as any visitor would, through the secretary’s office, where gatekeepers kept his schedule, ensuring that only invited guests saw Walt. A cabinet along the wall houses a collection of Academy Awards, Emmy Awards, and more. On the small desk, where Walt’s assistant Thelma “Tommie” Wilck sat, the schedule book is open to October 27, 1966. “Epcot” is listed as the first thing on the agenda. Two not-very-comfortable-looking chairs are set against the wall. And ashtrays are omnipresent.

When you enter Walt’s formal office, it’s smaller than you would expect for the head of a studio, though hardly tiny. There’s a white couch against the back wall, over which hangs the mechanical toy bird Walt picked up in New Orleans that became the inspiration for audio-animatronics, which would ultimately differentiate the theme parks. On the glass table in front of the couch, along with ashtrays, is a souvenir booklet from the Banshee Club in NYC, for a 1947 luncheon given to Disney to commemorate the 20 th anniversary of Mickey Mouse.

In front of the bookshelf stands a piano, where Walt would regularly have Richard Sherman—part of the songwriting team that created the music for so many classic Disney films—try out new songs. And on certain evenings he’d play “Feed the Birds,” from the film Mary Poppins (Walt’s favorite song). Today, Sherman, age 95, is the only person allowed to play that piano.

Walt’s desk area is the focal point of the room. A model of a Grumman Gulfstream sits in the corner; front and center is a ship’s bell from a U.S. Coast Guard ice breaker, dubbed a Coast Guard Oscar, given to Disney by a vice admiral for the film Men Against the Arctic. Behind the desk are three prominent shelves of knick-knacks—a combination of figurines that Walt collected or was gifted over the years. There’s no obvious rhyme or reason to their arrangement, but they show a side of his personality that’s rarely discussed. Also on the walls are pictures of Walt’s two daughters, along with (reproductions of) Norman Rockwell drawings of them. (Rockwell and Disney were friends.)

Through the next door is the working office, where Walt would meet daily with directors, writers, artists, producers, and more, with the group sometimes completely filling the room. He would start his day at 8:30 a.m. and run through 4:30 p.m. or 5 p.m., after which he would read and edit scripts until approximately 7 p.m. Several piles of those scripts are still stacked in the room today.

Along the wall are aerial plans for Disneyland, noting which rides were complete (including the Enchanted Tiki Room and Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln) and which were in the works (including the Haunted Mansion, described as “Future home of 1,001 ghosts”—that number would later be shrunk to 999). Preliminary plans for what would become Walt Disney World are also hanging there.

The back wall houses a kitchenette, where the cabinets are still filled with Walt’s favorite foods, including V8 juice, Spam, and more canned chili than you could possibly imagine.

There’s a creative buzz in the office, but as Disney, the company, faces its recent challenges and plans one of its largest expansions to date, you’re also reminded that Walt had to be a savvy business leader as well. Little reminders of that are scattered around, like a note from then-board member Card Walker, compiling the domestic gross box office returns of competing studios.

Of course, the leadership styles of Walt Disney and that of the company’s current management are vastly different, something necessitated by the nearly-60-year difference and the changes in the entertainment industry. Iger surely keeps up with how competitors are performing, but he doesn’t personally audition voice talents or approve songs.

He’s obsessive in a different way when it comes to the films, watching each Disney movie between three and five times during the production process. And he’s not afraid to take big swings ( as the ongoing $60 billion park expansion would indicate ), just like Walt did with Snow White and the launch of Disneyland.

The sense of history in Walt Disney’s office is palpable, as it is throughout the old animation building. This is the place where such beloved classics as Dumbo, Bambi , and Lady and the Tramp were drawn. Work continues today in the same building, but Walt’s office is one of the few places where Disney is content to look backward—and that alone makes it unique.
