The carnets, in a facsimile edition, containing the notes, drawings and sketches made by Le Corbusier during his travels in the Orient.

Le Corbusier, an outstanding figure in 20th-century architecture, always carried a sketchbook, a sort of diary in which, faithful to the “habits” of the great 19th-century travelers, he accumulated observations, calculations, drawings of works and projects, while keeping careful notes on meetings, experiences, reflections. These carnets constitute a rich source of information for an understanding of the thought and the boundless creative imagination of one of the greatest intellectuals of the 1900s. This luxurious edition offers the facsimile reproduction of the carnets connected with the travels of Le Corbusier in the Orient, containing many exceptional sketches, studies and drawings that permit a perfect reconstruction of his movements. The contributions of Giuliano Ghisleri provide a key of interpretation for the texts, which are included in a complete transcription of the handwritten words.

En 1910, Le Corbusier quitte le Jura suisse et entame un long séjour en Allemagne durant lequel, à Berlin notamment, il conçoit le projet du "voyage d'Orient" qui se déroule très exactement du 20 mai 1911 au 1er novembre suivant. Dans son ouvrage L'Art décoratif d'aujourd'hui , il commente ainsi cet épisode formateur : "J'entrepris un grand voyage qui allait être décisif, à travers les campagnes et les villes des pays réputés encore intacts ; de Prague, je descendis le Danube, je vis les Balkans serbes, puis la Roumanie, puis les Balkans de Bulgarie, Andrinople, la mer de Marmara, Stamboul (et Byzance), Brousse d'Asie. Et puis l'Athos. Et puis la Grèce. Puis le sud de l'Italie avec Pompéi. Rome.

J'ai vu les grands monuments éternels, gloire de l'esprit humain. J'ai surtout cédé à cette invincible attirance méditerranéenne. Et il était temps après les dix années (copieusement rendues publiques par les revues) de l'art décoratif et de l'architecture allemands.

Turquie d'Andrinople, Byzance de Sainte-Sophie ou de Salonique, Perse de Brousse. Le Parthénon, Pompéi, puis le Colisée. L'architecture me fut révélée. L'architecture est le jeu magnifique des formes sous la lumière. L'architecture est un système cohérent de l'esprit. L'architecture n'a rien à voir avec le décor. L'architecture est dans les grandes oeuvres, difficiles et pompeuses léguées par le temps, mais elle est aussi dans la moindre masure, dans un mur de clôture, dans toute chose sublime ou modeste qui contient une géométrie suffisante pour qu'un rapport mathématique s'y installe."
