An unforgettable highlight of our trip

This was easily one of the best things we did on our 2 week vacation! It was easy to learn how to drive, so thrilling, and a great way to experience parts of the countryside. Our tour guide even taught us some about olive trees and let us explore a church nearby. We got to have lunch at a private vinyard with a beautiful view. Would absolutely recommend to anyone in the area!!

Had the best time! Were treated to the best little tour of beautiful Tuscany… if it wasn’t for the tour, I wouldn’t have gone to Sienna, but so glad we did - the quaint little town blew me away! Our wine farm lunch with a view was great. And of course to top off the trip, Pisa was a massive highlight with never ending poses to keep the tower from falling! Massive thanks and shoutout to our incredible tour guide, Angela, and driver, Ricardo!

Roberto and Lavi were amazing. Roberto is an excellent driver and Lavi is an amazing tour guide. Lavi took the time to really teach us the wine- making process. This made the whole experience more exciting and fun

Alex was an awesome guide! We learned so much and the wineries were fantastic. What a great itinerary! We are wanting to reserve your company to do this tour for us in 2024 we will have 36 clients and request Alex if he is available. Grazie Miele e Buon Natale! Wine, wine, and more wine!

This trip was a wonderful experience. The stops were well organized and informational. Our guide, Alessandro was so knowledgeable of the area and the wines. We enjoyed visiting with others on the tour and experiencing the Tuscan life. I would wholeheartedly recommend this trip to anyone going to Florence. I also would ask for Alessandro and his driver to be your tour guides.

We took the trip with Noemi as our guide. She was so sweet, funny and informative. Even with the difficult task of keeping us all punctual for the various meeting spots. The 3 towns were excellent, especially Siena where the local guide (forget her name) was also fantastic with the information and telling us the the stories and details of this ancient city (the horse race, wow!! lol). One small complaint (not to do with Noemi or the tour itself), was a bit of condition on the initial meeting point at the Florence station. A bunch of us were waiting in the wrong spot based on the email we got, and where Google maps left us, while most were around the corner in the correct spot. No worries we found them though…. It was a long day with lots of walking and I highly recommend this tour!

My wife and I had the best time on this Chianti safari. Our tour guide, Gloria, and driver, Labi, were absolutely phenomenal. Gloria was incredibly knowledgeable and even more friendly. The day started early in central Florence, where we all piled into “The Beast.” Labi made light work of the rough mountain roads, and we quickly arrived at the first estate of the day. We were treated to a history of Chianti wines while we sampled generously poured glasses along with some of the best cheese we’ve ever had. From there, we headed to the second estate of the day where we sampled olive oil and wine. This was also our lunch stop. Lunch consisted of an incredibly delicious meal composed of regional classics. Wild boar ragu, truffle ravioli, bruschetta, and more. The food and wine were second only to the atmosphere. Lastly, we headed to the third and final estate where we saw how olive oil is made and learned more about the culture of Chianti. We sampled more wine, and were treated to a tasty selection of cured meats. All in all, it was an experience my wife and I will remember forever. It was clear that Gloria had a great relationship with every estate we visited, and the friendliness she exuded was matched by each estate guide we met. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who thinks they might even kind of enjoy Chianti. Even if you don’t, you will after this.

Beautiful villages! But Not too happy with WalkAbout Tours! I've been a travel agent for 40 years and I've traveled the world. The meeting point was near Santa Maria Novella train station. After we all assembled there (30 people) we had to walk 1 mile to the bus. Claudia are so called guide-held up her pole with a flag and never looked back see if the group was with her. She crossed large intersections and was oblivious to her group. I think this tour operator needs to train their guides better and have the bus near the meeting point.

Fantastic from beginning to end!!! We met outside the National Library at 8:45am, filled out a form and then walked to the vehicle down the road. The tour guide, Alessandro, was great. He was personable, informative about history of region as well as wine at each of our stops and had a witty sense of humour. The two wineries (had 3 wine tastings each) and cheese/meat pairings. They were very different from each other so it was nice to have the variety. The restaurant stop between the wineries which also had wines to try was off the beaten path and I definitely would not have discovered on my own. It also involved a rose tasting, olive oil tasting/lesson, a great lunch and amazing views. We had time at each stop to wander a bit on our own. Water was also available on the tables at each venue. The vehicle was a bit of a rough ride but I didn't find it rocky enough to fee sick. If you get motion sickness though I recommend sitting up front and don't do the tour already hungover. It was a really cool way to see the area of Tuscany. I did this trip solo and met lots of great ppl. What appealed to me about this particular tour was the smaller size. I didn't want 40 + ppl. There isn't a lot of walking but wear shoes that can go on grass and gravel. We arrived back around 5:45 pm. I highly recommend.

Pizza and gelato never tasted so good, highly recommend!!!!

What an amazing adventure! My mom and I did the pizza and gelato class on a recommendation from our travel agent and it did not disappoint! Angela, Tiziano and Thomas were incredibly fun and knowledgeable. You can tell they have great passion for what they do. We learned a lot and most importantly had soo much fun. Lots of laughter and delicious pizza. Angela puts on quite a show by turning rose petals and basil leaves into powder by freezing with liquid nitrogen before putting it into an amazing lemon gelato. Tiziano and Thomas were a great comedy act and really know there stuff when it comes to pizza. Highly recommend this class!!!!!

This cooking class was the highlight of my trip to Florence! My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our time with Luca -and Lucia who were amazing teachers and so much fun! Luca has a knack for making everyone feel special which was really wonderful! We made core memories for a lifetime on this experience! Book this experience you won’t be disappointed!

Tour is okay. They’re not very organized when getting everyone to take the train to different islands. The tour guide lost my group. That wasn’t fun. Cinque terre is very crowded. Food was all tourist trap.

This day trip was an amazing experience. We were luck to have Ardo as our guide. He was so knowledgeable and kind. From the moment he picked us up in Florence to the moment he dropped us off, he educated about the history and fun facts about all the sites we visited. Cinque Terra is not only a beautiful area, but extremely unique in its setting. I recommended visiting and try to visit during off peak times. We were there on a rainy day and it was still crowded. Be prepared to walk a lot, take a train, and a boat. And hike if you choose to. We opted to hike from one town to another and it was no joke. Lots of steep hills to climb up and then down. The nice part was when we reached the top, we treated ourselves to a limencello frosty. It was delicious. Another amazing factor was that every food I tasted in Cinque Terra was so fresh and delicious. My favorite was the Pan Frito Straccino, recommended by Ardo. Best food and best day in Italy.

Chris and Manuel were terrific guides. They provided good insights and somehow kept us all together. Totally enjoyed the day.

Great and fun experience. Our hosts Cris, Tiziano, and Tomas were wonderful! Full of fun and knowledgeable. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the food resulting from our efforts was delicious.

Davide is an awesome guide! He has a lot of knowledge about history and culture. He was very funny and sweet and also took time to give us tips for our next destination! The tour was great, and the lunch at the winery was delicious and the place has wonderful view over Tuscany!

Best Florence Walking Tours: 10 Things to Do in Florence

Having lived in Florence, I didn’t think I needed to book any tours for my return trips.  It wasn’t until I went back on a business trip with my mom that I realized I needed something to occupy her while I worked.  I ended up booking an olive oil tasting tour and a pizza and gelato class for both of us, and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it.  Ever since our  honeymoon in Florence , my husband and I look for opportunities to take guided tours and learn more about the places we visit.  Whether it was the subject or the tour guide, these are some of the best Florence walking tours that we have experienced over the past few years.

Best Walking Tours in Florence for Art

Introduction to the uffizi gallery tour.

You could spend hours waiting in line for the Uffizi.  Or, you could wander the museum aimlessly and wonder if you are seeing what you think you should see.  Even still, you could wonder what Renaissance art is and how it is different.  Or, you could book a skip the line ticket and small group tour of the Uffizi with a local art historian and avoid the line, ask your questions, and leave Florence with a better understanding of how the Renaissance was born.

Our expert guide, William, was incredible.  We would hire him for a private tour; he has that much knowledge to share.  The Uffizi is absolutely daunting, and we did not have any perspective for Renaissance art.  William walks you through the Uffizi, teaching about art, as well as the political context in which the Renaissance was born.  You will see the “big” works of art (Like Spring and The Birth of Venus), but you will also understand what makes Renaissance art different. William shows how artists could take flat paintings to new dimensions using color.  William’s passion for the subject is contagious. He refused to be deterred by the somewhat-sluggish-post-lunchtime enthusiasm by our group.  I recommend going on an empty stomach so as not to experience the post-lunch lag.

This is one of the best guided tours for an introduction to Renaissance art and history in Florence , as well as the Uffizi.  It is a great introduction to the museum, the art, and the time period.  I especially recommend it to first-time Florence visitors.   NOTE:   If you decide not to do a tour, buy your tickets in advance, purchase the Firenze card,  or have your concierge reserve them. Don’t spend all day in line.   Skip the line .  It’s totally a thing.

Visit the Accademia Early in the Morning

You can see David in the Piazza Michelangelo .  Or the Piazza della Signoria.  Both are lovely, but they do not compare to the original.  The original David is housed in the Accademia Gallery .  They best way to see him is on an  early morning guided tour of the Accademia .  Our guide provided a lot of perspective about different works of art housed in the museum and ended the tour at the David so we could spend as much time as we wanted in there.  All the nights I spent in piazzas with the “fake” Davids did not prepare me for seeing the real thing.  I felt dwarfed by the size of David (and I’m 5’10”); it’s hard to imagine how an artist has the vision to create something so large and so life-like.  Even if you don’t think you are an art person, I think you have to see this in person.

This tour has timed entry tickets, and you still end up waiting in line for a bit, so I can’t imagine how long it takes if you are not prepared.  If you plan to visit without a guide, you’ll want to buy tickets in advance.  I see the lines snake for blocks down via Ricasoli during shoulder and high season so save yourself the headache.  Book a skip the line tour/ticket or have your concierge arrange your visit. (Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an instance where there has not been a line.  Ever.)

Best Florence Walking Tours for Learning History

Renaissance florence night walking tour.

Angelo A. (yes, with an A) gives the best two hour walking tour in Florence for people who enjoy mystery, history, and humor.  You start this Florence walking tour at the Palazzo Strozzi with an introduction to the Florentine power players.  Angelo A captivates you with his story-telling and you can easily imagine you are sitting in the middle of the Renaissance, rather than present day.  You’ll snake around through the backstreets and piazzas as Angelo entertains you with stories from the Medici family (and point out one of the descendants if he sees them) and the rise and fall of Florence.  As night descends, you’ll feel the shroud of mystery cloak the city.

He will show you where Florence was re-built after World War II and share stories from his family’s history during that time.  You won’t be able to tell until you start looking for it.  Angelo A. will get on to kids defacing the Ponte Vecchio, point out bad restaurants, and tell you when you are making a mistake with your gelato flavors.  He will also stumble upon classical music concerts and tell you to close your eyes and just enjoy the moment.  You’ll cross the river and he will lead you through the Oltranro with more stories and legends of Florence.  Angelo A. is irreverent, subversively funny, and fiercely passionate about his city.  If you think you know Florence, book this tour and see if you learn anything new.  I definitely did!

Palazzo Vecchio Tour

I cannot even tell you the number of times that I walked by the Palazzo Vecchio and never thought about what was inside.  I thought it was just city offices.  Last year, on our trip to Florence, I noticed the side doors were open one evening, giving way to a beautiful courtyard.  I booked this Palazzo Vecchio tour because I wanted to know more about the Palazzo.

The tour begins in the Palazzo’s courtyard with a history of architecture and historical timeline.   From there, you will make your way through the political history of Florence, the decisions of Popes, the secret hiding places for valuables, and the rooms where important decisions are made.  As you climb higher in the Palazzo, you learn how Florence was able to take rival cities, like Siena and Pisa.  You will find out whether or not Dan Brown’s depictions in Inferno are accurate.  If you are anything like me, you’ll be completely fascinated by the map room.  At the end of the tour, the guide will lead you to the first level of the tower and point out what you are seeing.  The guide is extremely thorough and continually asks if you have any questions.

We didn’t book the apertivo or dinner option , so I can’t speak to the restaurant experience.  Our tour ended around blue hour, which is my favorite time of day.  We decided to stay up there to watch the sunset over the Ponte Vecchio, the Florence Duomo, and even Santa Croce. You can watch the lights come on throughout the city.  It was really beautiful.  (I think the view is better than the view from the bell tower and it’s less intense than the stairs to the top of il Duomo .)

Best Florence Tours for Food

Florence wine and walking tour.

This Florence wine and food tour is primarily focused on the Oltrarno side of the river.  That being said, it does end in front of the Duomo, so you will hear about most of the “major” Florence sites.  Our guide was great at pointing out restaurants that she enjoys along the way, so we were able to build up our list of places to try.  We visited a small wine shop with a separate tasting room in the Oltrarno.  We tried several different red and white wines and enjoyed bruschetta with olive oil and different pate options.  (Is there anything better?  No.  No, there is not.)  After making our way back across the river, we stopped at another restaurant for a different wine and more snacks.  I didn’t realize how much wine we were drinking, but I definitely felt a little tipsy by the end of the tour.

I did not get as much out of the historical information presented on this Florence walking tour . But, that being said, it’s a great introduction to the city.  Also, I absolutely recommend it for trying local wines and learning more about Chianti and the wine-making process.  I would also encourage you to ask for restaurant recommendations.  We tried several places our guide recommended and all of them were tasty (and cheap!).

Cooking Classes in Florence

You know what the best way to fuel up for more walking is?  Carbs.  You know what the best travel souvenirs are?   Pizza and gelato .  If you can’t (or don’t want to – let’s be real) bring your family to Italy, bring Italy to your family.  My mom and I took this pizza and gelato class and loved it.  You spend two hours learning the tricks of the trade and then enjoy your meal in the most delightful wine cellar.  What’s not to love about that?

If you aren’t feeling pizza, then try this fresh pasta-making class .  We learned to make egg-based and water-based pastas, including tortelli.  We made three different sauces (with olive oil as the base) and everything was delicious.  Again, you spend a couple hours learning how to make pasta from a master chef, and then enjoy it with your classmates.  They give you all the recipes to take home so that you can enjoy Italy again and again.  Completely worth it.  (You can read about all of our experiences with different cooking classes in Italy !)

Florence Food Tour

In 2021, we booked a food tour of Florence .  We had such an excellent experience with a Rome food tour that I decided to book the same company.  Francesco was an excellent guide of the San Frediano and Oltrarno neighborhoods of Florence.  Not only did he give us a lot of information about the various foods that we were trying, but he shared extensive knowledge about the restaurants and shops that we visited as well.

What I loved about this tour is how it was very seasonal.  We were able to try local and regional specialties that were incredibly fresh.  This also meant that we tried various dishes that we probably would not have ordered on our own.  Most of the stops included a local cocktail or wine, so we got to try a variety of drinks as well.  The tour was organized in such a way that conversations were easy and free flowing, the food was delicious, and we learned more about apertivo culture.

I highly recommend this tour as a way to get away from the tourist trap restaurants, learn more about seasonal cuisine in Florence (and Tuscany), and try a lot of new things along the way.

Free Florence Walking Tours

After having a great experience with La Bussola in Venice, Tom wanted to try their free walking tour of Florence .  They offer a morning tour and an afternoon tour.  Since we prefer to rest in the middle of the day, we opted for the morning tour.  The two free walking tours cover different sights, so you could certainly make a day of it, and a lot of people do.  Our tour began at the Strozzi Palace, crossed the Arno into Santo Spirito, crossed the Ponte Vecchio and concluded near Via dei Neri.

I was surprised at how much we learned about the city (that we hadn’t learned on other tours), but what I enjoyed most are the recommendations the guides shared about restaurants and places to go.  It certainly felt more authentic than most walking tours, and it’s how we found ‘Ino!  The only drawback of this tour is that the group is larger than most.  That being said, the guide was very proactive in ensuring that we had the opportunity to ask questions.  They do ask that you register in advance, but if you show up before the tour, they will try to accommodate you if they are cancellations or no-shows.

DIY Free Walking Tours of Florence

If you aren’t the type to take advantage of guided tours (but I assure you that they are worth the money), I have a couple of options for a self guided walking tour of Florence.  Grab your smartphone and some earphones and download the Rick Steves app. This app offers  free audio tours of the Accademia Museum, the Bargello Museum, the San Marco Museum, the Uffizi Gallery, and a walking tour of Florence .  His Florence and Tuscany book offers the same tours in written form, if you would rather read than listen.  There are also a few Florence city walks in the Florence day by day book .  (This is one of my favorite travel guides.)

When You Can’t Walk Around Florence Anymore

Fiat 500 tour of the florence countryside.

My husband probably has PTSD from our  Fiat 500 tour (and Nico, the most patient tour guide ever, probably does, too).  I, however, choose to remember how beautiful golden hour was as we cruised through the Tuscan countryside. How it felt to have the wind rushing through my hair.  That the hills seemed to stretch on for miles when we were just barely outside of Florence.  Watching the sunset while drinking delicious wine and snacking on tasty prosciutto.  This driving tour departs from the hills outside of Florence, and you will be back in time for dinner or a stroll along the Arno.   Pro tip:  Make sure you are competent at driving a standard transmission because a vintage Fiat 500 has a double-clutch.  (I prefer this to all the day trips because you don’t miss out on the beauty of Florence. You can make it back for a late seating at Sostanza , which isn’t the case with most guided tours.

Listen, Learn & Read More

As mentioned above, Rick Steves offers free audio tours of the most popular sites in Florence .   If you use an earphone splitter, you can listen with your spouse and experience it together.  (Tom and I do this, and I was stoked when Jenn Lake  mentioned that she and her husband do the same when watching movies on planes.)  Want to learn a little Italian before you go?  I’ve been using the DK Eyewitness Phrase Book and CD since 2004.  I would listen to it on my commute, and I definitely picked up more than I expected.

I still use books for a lot of travel planning.  (We love going to Half Price Books and the library to browse their selections.)   Florence and Tuscany Day-by-Day and the Top 10 Florence & Tuscany books are my favorite guides.  If you don’t mind a guide that is a little bit large, I’ve been impressed with the information in the  DK Florence and Tuscany guide .  Tom likes the Rick Steves Florence and Tuscany book , but there is a lot of overlap between the city and country guides.  You don’t need both.

We’ve spent a lot of time in Florence.  If you need more inspiration or ideas to plan your trip, check out the links below.  If you’re wondering what are some great places to visit in Tuscany, I’ve got the hill towns of Italy covered, too. SaveSave SaveSave SaveSave

Food tours are definitely my jam. The night walking tour also sounds really cool.

I am all about skipping the lines and it sounds like Angelo is an excellent tour guide.

I would love to do all of these but probably the Fiat 500 tour the most! Those cars are just so stinkin’ cute! Then top it off with a wine tour! #WanderfulWednesday

I’m all for food tours when we’re on vacation, and that wine and walking tour sounds amazing! Y’all really have gotten to see and do so much in Florence!

Great tour suggestions. I’d love to explore the Tuscan countryside at sunset, do a wine tour, or learn to make pasta! Definitely jealous that you’ve had the opportunity to do all of those!

Florence I wanna do. Tuscan countryside I’ve not been too keen on, until I saw these shots – it looks really nice! #wanderfulwednesday

Italy is on my list and these look like some great options for touring! I love the idea of taking cooking classes, so that you have actual recipes and knowledge to bring home, instead of just cheesey souvenirs. #TheWeeklyPostcard

I love Florence–what a lot of wonderful ideas! I’d definitely like to do the night walking tour. The Palazzo Vecchio tour would be worth it just for that fantastic view as the lights are coming on. Spectacular photo! Coming home knowing how to make pizza and pasta might be dangerous, though 😉

I visited Florence years ago as part of an organized 2 week tour of Italy so I didn’t get to try any separate tours. I would love to try the wine walking one next time I am there. Thanks for sharing on #TheWeeklyPostcard.

Ahh this has me reminiscing about being back in Florence in October <3 I love that city so much… also I didn't realize you'd lived there! We did the Uffizi tour that you list which was really good but SOO crowded – omg!! At least people are appreciating art so I can't complain about that haha. I really wanted to do the Fiat 500 tour but I can't drive manual. Your photo from that with your husband is sooo cute!!

I love that last photo of you and the hubs by the car! All the sights and adventures on this trip sounds amazing! Emily @ Martinis & Bikinis

We were in Florence a few years ago, for a wedding. We didn’t have but a week there and explored the city by ourselves, but I see it’s a good idea to book a tour sometimes. The tour for history must be very interesting. You probably find out a lot about the city. #TheWeeklyPostcrd

These are so interesting — pinning for future travel planning! I do love tours so I can know more about the sights I’m seeing. Your historical tour suggestions are my first choice!

I’ve never been to Florence but it’s on my list of places I want to go. That cooking class and wine/city tour have my name all over them!

Best Walking Tours in Florence

Top walking tours in florence.

Florence is easily one of the most recognizable places in Italy for tourists . The capital of the picturesque region of Tuscany , Florence has been important as early as the medieval times. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a highly touristy place with millions of visitors a year! And the throngs of tourists have a good reason, too.

At each turn, Florence offers an interesting piece of art and architecture that represents its deep history. As a haven of the arts, Florence is best explored on foot. This guide puts together some of the best walking tours in Florence you can have in the city. It’ll allow you an easy route to some of the greatest sights Florence has to offer.

Florence: Walking Tour

This tour’s unassuming name belies its perfect introduction to the tourist hive that is Florence. This takes tourists through some of the city’s most iconic sights, starting with the cathedral (Duomo) and the Baptistery of St. John. This side of Florence also includes the Sta. Maria del Fiore and its adjacent Giotto Bell Tower.

Florence: Small Group History Walking Tour with an Aperitivo

This walking tour expands upon the idea set by the previous one. The three hour walk focuses not on the touristy places, but on the places instrumental to the birth not just of Florence of but of Italy in general. This history-buff-perfect tour starts at the Piazza della Repubblica, where Caesar first founded the city. You will also get a crash course in everything Florentian, from its architecture to its early politics.

You will make your way to Ponte Vecchio, see part of the Vasari Corridor, stroll through the Piazzale degli Uffizi, enter the Palazzo Vecchio, and head to the Duomo, among others. You will also be treated to a cup of espresso and an aperitivo (plus a snack) during different points of the tour.

Ultimate Uffizi: 2-Hour Priority Entrance Tour

If walking around a crowded city isn’t really your thing, this GetYourGuide Original tour will hit the spot. The Uffizi Gallery is famous for being the epicenter of Florence art, housing some of the most priceless art pieces in the world. Because of this, the queues here are often impossibly long, as hundreds of tourists clamor to get around the two-storey museum.

You can forget about the lines on this tour, though, which gives you priority access and a guide that will walk you through not just the museum’s highlights but also its secrets. Not only will you see masterpieces by da Vinci and Botticelli, but you will also know the history behind them. You can also gain access to all open exhibitions on the day you visit.

Marvel at both the artwork on the ceiling and the richness of materials used for the floors and pillars. The tour comes with a ticket to the rest of the Duomo, so you can explore the museum, the cathedral itself, the crypt, and the baptistry. It’s valid for three days, so if you have other plans you can skip and come back later!

Academia Gallery: Reserved Entrance and Guided Tour

The beauty of Florence art and culture is that it’s just as interesting whether you choose a widespread or a focused approach. The Academia Gallery tour is an example of the latter, with the famous David statue being the focal point.

The tour gives you an in-depth look at the life and times of Michelangelo, the immortal artist of the Renaissance. The 1-hour tour unfolds as you visit the collection of his masterpieces, along with that of other illustrious painters of the time. And if you think that museum tours are boring academic sessions (the museum’s name can be misleading, after all), the tour’s licensed and professional guides will prove you wrong!

What to Keep in Mind When Choosing Chianti Winery Tours from Florence

When choosing Chianti winery tours from Florence, there are several key factors to consider to ensure a memorable and fulfilling experience. Chianti, nestled in the heart of Tuscany, offers a unique viticultural landscape that differs significantly from the wine regions of Southern or Western Tuscany.

Understand Chianti’s Unique Wine Profile :

Chianti is renowned for its Chianti and Chianti Classico wines, primarily made from the Sangiovese grape. This region’s wines are known for their robust flavour, high acidity, and tannic nature, contrasting with the more rounded and often bolder wines from Southern Tuscany, where the climate imparts different characteristics.

Diversity of Tours :

The Chianti region offers an array of tours, each providing something distinct. From intimate small-group experiences focusing on local winemaking traditions to more extensive tours that include scenic off-road adventures, there’s a tour to match every preference.

It’s crucial to carefully read tour descriptions to select one that aligns with your interests, whether it’s a deep dive into organic winemaking or an exploration of historical wineries. I’ve tried to include as broad a range as possible in this post.

Consider Group Size and Tour Length :

Different tours offer varying group sizes and lengths. Smaller groups generally allow for a more personalised experience, while larger groups can be more social but potentially less intimate.

Also, tour durations vary – some are short and sweet, perfect for a quick taste of Chianti, while others span a full day, delving deeper into the region’s wine culture.

Food Pairings and Local Cuisine :

Many tours include food pairings or meals. Chianti wines pair wonderfully with Tuscan cuisine, known for its rustic and hearty flavours. Understanding (and seeking out) these pairings can enrich your tasting experience.

Accessibility and Physical Requirements :

Consider the physical demands of your chosen tour. Some may involve walking through vineyards or navigating cellars with stairs, which might be challenging for those with mobility issues.

Make sure to read the fine print on all tour descriptions, as well as reviews, to save yourself from any surprises on the day. If in doubt, always contact the tour organiser to check finer details with them.

Customisation and Private Tours :

For a more tailored experience, look for tours that offer customisation or are private. These can often accommodate special requests and provide a more individualised experience, especially if you have specific wineries or types of wine in mind.

Seasonal Considerations :

The time of year can greatly influence your tour experience. Harvest season, typically in late September to October, offers a unique opportunity to see the winemaking process in action. Summer is typically very hot and very busy. Winter and early spring meanwhile, will be quiet.

Some tours will operate on a much reduced schedule. Also, note that vines will be relatively bare at this time of year (as grapes will have been harvested in Autumn and will be just starting to grow again). So don’t expect to see full vines!

Chianti Wine Tasting from Florence: FAQ

What can I expect from a Chianti winery tour from Florence? You can look forward to visiting various wineries in the Chianti region, known for its picturesque vineyards and olive groves. The tours typically include sampling an array of wines, predominantly made from the Sangiovese grape, and exploring the intricacies of the winemaking process.

Often, the experience is enhanced with food pairings featuring local Tuscan specialities. It’s an ideal way to gain insights into Tuscany’s rich viticultural heritage.

How long is a typical wine tasting tour in Chianti? Tour durations vary considerably. Shorter tours might last around 2-3 hours, offering a brief but delightful taste of Chianti, whereas full-day tours can extend to 8-10 hours. I recommend considering how much time you’re willing to spend and what you want to experience when choosing a tour.

Are there different types of tours available? There’s a wide range of tours to suit various interests and preferences. From group tours in minibuses, ideal for socialising, to more exclusive private tours in luxury vehicles, and even adventurous off-road experiences. Each type of tour offers something unique, from exploring organic wineries to visiting historic estates or family-run vineyards.

Is transportation included in the wine tours? Most tours from Florence include transportation, typically in comfortable, air-conditioned coaches, minivans, or private cars. This is incredibly convenient as it takes the hassle out of navigating the region’s rural roads, and also means you won’t need a designated driver amongst your group, who won’t be able to drink.

Do I need to have prior knowledge about wines? Not at all. These tours cater to a range of knowledge levels, from beginners to wine aficionados. The guides and sommeliers are skilled at tailoring their information to suit everyone’s understanding.

What should I wear on a wine tasting tour? I recommend opting for comfortable and appropriate clothing for the weather. Some Chianti tours from Florence will involve walking through vineyards, so I’d recommend that you wear comfortable footwear for this. For tours during warmer months, consider a hat and sunscreen.

Can I buy wine on these tours? Yes, you’ll often have the opportunity to purchase wines directly from the wineries. Some even offer international shipping services, allowing you to enjoy your favourites back home.

Are food and meals included in the tour? Many tours include some form of food pairing or meals, which could range from light snacks to full multi-course lunches. Check the specifics of your tour for details.

Is there a minimum age for participants? The legal drinking age in Italy is 18, but younger participants can often join the tour when accompanied by adults, although they won’t partake in wine tasting.

Are the tours wheelchair accessible? Accessibility varies between tours. Some historic wineries and vineyards may have limited access. It’s best to check with the tour provider if you require specific accommodations.

What happens in case of bad weather? Most tours operate come rain or shine.

In severe weather, arrangements might be altered, or the tour may be rescheduled. I advise checking the tour’s cancellation policy for details on how they handle inclement weather.

Can I customise a private wine tour? Certainly. Private tours usually offer the flexibility to tailor the itinerary to your interests. This can include visiting specific wineries or focusing on particular aspects of the Chianti region’s wine culture. It’s an excellent option if you’re seeking a more personalised experience.

How far in advance should I book a wine tour? To avoid disappointment, especially during peak tourist seasons, I recommend booking your tour a few weeks in advance. This ensures you get the tour and date that best suits your schedule.

Are there any health or safety measures in place? Tour operators generally adhere to current health and safety guidelines, which may include measures like reduced group sizes and enhanced sanitisation practices. It’s wise to check with your tour provider for their specific health and safety policies.

Can dietary restrictions be accommodated? Most tours are happy to cater to dietary needs like vegetarian or gluten-free options, provided you inform them in advance. It’s important to communicate any dietary restrictions when making your booking to ensure they can accommodate your needs.

Your guide will lead you through the gallery, telling stories of its history and the famous artwork housed here —the most famous being Michelangelo's David ! Afterwards, you'll begin your walking tour through the city.

Your guide will lead you through Florence, taking in iconic sites including the Florence Duomo, Piazza della Signoria, and Ponte Vecchio. Along the way, learn the fascinating history of Florence and gain local insights that'll help you make the most of your time in this beautiful city.

Florence and Accademia Walking Tour Description

Your 3-hour tour includes:

Skip-the-line Accademia tickets with statue of David

A walking tour of Florence's highlights

An engaging, English-speaking guide

A maximum group size of 18

The Accademia Gallery

Your tour begins with skip-the-line entry to the Galleria dell'Accademia. Aside from the Uffizi Gallery, the Accademia Gallery is the most-visited museum in Florence. This means that long lines to get inside are common. Luckily, we reserve your Accademia tickets ahead of time, meaning that the only line you'll stand in is the much shorter security line.

Your guide is an expert in bringing the gallery's masterpieces and exhibits to life with entertaining stories about their history and meaning, and they'll help you connect more closely with the stunning artwork you'll see inside, including the most famous piece of all: David.

Short delays at the security check may occur during the busiest months of June and July.

Michelangelo's David

When you enter the gallery in which the iconic statue of David stands, you'll immediately notice his height, smooth surface, and famously determined expression which reflects the moments before David went into battle with Goliath in the famous biblical tale.

Your guide will explain how Michelangelo heroically carved this masterpiece out of a block of carrara marble that no other artist wanted to touch. Make sure you take a good look at Michelangelo's hands and feet! They're out of proportion because David was supposed to be placed on top of the Florence Duomo.

The Duomo of Florence - Exterior

This iconic Duomo is Florence's most recognized landmark, located in the heart of Florence's historical center. Florence's cathedral towers over the city and is topped by a magnificent Renaissance dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi. Your guide will take you around the outside of this incredible structure, and you'll learn the amazing story of its construction, which began over 800 years ago. You'll also get a closer look at the famed bronze Baptistry Doors.

Piazza della Signoria and the Medici Family

Filled with statues, fountains and beautiful architecture, Piazza della Signoria is the historical and emotional heart of Florence. The most prominent feature of the piazza is Florence’s town hall, the Palazzo Vecchio —once home to the powerful Medici family . Admire the Loggia dei Lanzi and the beautiful exterior corridors of the Uffizi Museum as you learn about the Medici family’s deep impact on the history of Florence, Italy, and the Renaissance movement.

Hidden Gems of Florence

Your walking tour isn't only about world-famous galleries and landmarks. Your guide will also show you some of the city's lesser-known gems, including the beautiful Orsanmichele Church, the ancient leather market, and the popular Bronze Boar fountain. You'll even stroll past one of our favorite local gelato shops where you can buy yourself a refreshing treat. Get to know more of Florence with the insights of your local guide!

Dante's District and Church

Your tour continues past the original house where Dante grew up, now converted into a museum. Plus, see the little church of Santa Margherita. It's said that this is where Dante and Beatrice fell in love. Dante writes about Beatrice in his most famous work, The Divine Comedy .

The Jewelers on Ponte Vecchio Bridge

Ponte Vecchio means “old bridge” in Italian, and it's appropriately named. Merchant shops have lined this famed bridge since the 13th century. Originally, the shops included fishmongers, butchers, and tanners, however these particular goods caused such a stench in the area that Ferdinand I proclaimed in 1593 that only jewelers were allowed to sell on the bridge. You'll feel as if you've stepped back in time as you stroll around this historic part of Florence.

Best things to do and see in Rome

A free walking tour is one of the best ways to visit Rome , the historical city rich with culture and unmatchable in its beauty. A Solo Traveller's Guide to Florence, Italy

Solo travellers to Florence can soak up culture and history throughout the beautiful Italian city

Production Associate

Florence was the spark that lit the flame of the Italian Renaissance 500 years ago, blessing the world with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Today, it remains Tuscany’s must-see city, with more art per capita than anywhere else in the world. Come here solo and you’ll be surrounded by museums and glorious architecture – not to mention a whole variety of wines to help you laze the afternoons away, and a busy scene by night.

A florence solo trip overview.

Admire the stunning views over Florence from the top of the bell tower

Florence is routinely visited by more than 50 million tourists a year, making it incredibly welcoming for both seasoned and inexperienced solo travellers. You’ll be warmly greeted by the sight of the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore as you make your way into town, its orange dome ballooning into the sky as you approach from the airport or the surrounding Tuscan wine region. From this moment on, the birthplace of the Renaissance will give you enough art museums and architecture to fill up several days.

It’s not all high culture, though. Florence is also a thriving student town, with hip bars and places to eat , as well as an upbeat nightlife scene. It’s safe and you’re almost certain to befriend a few like-minded travellers during your stay.

Opt for sleek and stylish accommodation in Florence

The city is picture-perfect and diminutive, so you’ll quickly find a hotel with an Instagram-worthy view. Stay on the banks of the River Arno, or head into the historic centre for scenes of Renaissance rooftops at sunset. Accommodation ranges from affordable chain hotels to luxury properties full of marble and antique furniture. Not sure where you want to book yet? Culture Trip has tons of ideas to inspire you; see our guides on where to stay in Florence , the best luxury hotels in Florence and the best boutique hotels in Florence .

What to do in Florence

Marvel at all the Renaissance art

Art lovers should make a beeline for the Uffizi Gallery, where you can see works by Caravaggio and many others

If you come to Florence and don’t stop by the Uffizi, you’re doing it all wrong. Home to world-famous works by the Renaissance masters, this art gallery just north of the Arno has been called the best in the world. Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus , Caravaggio’s Medusa and Raphael’s Portrait of Pope Leo X With Two Cardinals merit special inspection. A 10-minute walk north is the Accademia Gallery – here you’ll meet Michaelangelo’s David , the most renowned statue in the world.

Stroll from the Duomo and Piazzale Michelangelo

Head up to Piazzale Michelangelo at sunset for a beautiful view over the city

There are countless Renaissance artworks in Florence – but the buildings they’re housed in are also masterpieces. The Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore is unmissable – quite literally, since its billowing dome dominates the skyline no matter where you are in the city centre. Walk southeast for 25 minutes – crossing the medieval stone bridge Ponte Vecchio along the way – and you’ll end up in Piazzale Michelangelo. Here, a monument dedicated to the eponymous artist stands on a hill that overlooks the whole of Florence. It’s not the altitude that’s taken your breath away – it’s that view.

A guided walking tour of Florence is part of the itinerary when you book Culture Trip’s 10-day Highlights of Northern Italy tour .

Go credit-card-crazy in Florence’s many boutiques

Treat yourself to a Florence shopping spree, starting at Gucci Garden

Italy has long been associated with fabulous fashion-shopping opportunities, and Florence won’t let you down. The streets of Via Roma and Via dei Calzaiuoli are the alpha and omega, packed with stores stocking high-end brands. Pop into Luisaviaroma; the wares are expensive but the stylish colours and artistic installations make the shop an attraction in itself. Head to Via dei Serragli and you’ll find leather goods in Quoio, and hats and shoes at Reinhard Plank.

Eating and drinking in Florence

Foodies shouldn’t miss a stop at Mercato Centrale in Florence

If you’re a foodie, head straight to the Mercato Centrale in the heart of the city. The ground floor is home to a milling fruit market ; above, you’ll find wine bars, restaurants and tasting rooms. Try the fresh pizza and roast fish. You can even get a serving of sushi.

Take a culinary meander through Tuscany , sampling the region’s crisp, delicious wine here and there as you drive through landscapes which unravel to distant horizons. Look out for olive-oil presses and butchers shops, which make great pitstops for gourmands. All in all, you can have a trip that’s as good for your palate as it is for your eyes.

Stay safe, stay happy

Florence is a safe city for solo travellers. The biggest annoyance comes from pickpockets, who operate in crowded areas and on public transport, so keep any bags in sight at all times. Leaving valuables back at your hotel is another sensible precaution.

Getting around

The city of Florence is best discovered on foot

Florence is a small city that’s easily walkable: you can stroll across it in 40 minutes. As a result, there’s no metro or subway system. Buses do operate though, and there are two tramway train lines; the most vital one for solo travellers is T2, which gets you from the centre to the airport, or vice versa, in just 15 minutes.

Taxis are rather expensive and can’t be flagged down on the street. Instead, you can find one at one of the designated taxi stands citywide or book one by phone.

Cultural need-to-knows

Florence is a cosmopolitan place that welcomes every kind of solo traveller, including LGBTQ people. English is widely spoken, especially in the historical centre, as well as in shops and restaurants. That said, learning some handy Italian phrases before you travel definitely wouldn’t hurt.

Get the most out of Florence and the surrounding region by joining Culture Trip’s Highlights of Northern Italy adventure. Over 10 days, you’ll sip Tuscan wines, explore Florence, cycle around Rome and trek the Cinque Terre coastline – together in a small group of kindred spirits.

Getting to Florence from Rome via a high-speed train

There are several ways you can travel to Florence from Rome. Driving and flying are two common options, but taking a high-speed train is the most popular way to do this day trip.

You’ll find many train stations in Rome. Termini Station is centrally located and by far the largest depot. It offers more routes and plenty of facilities, including a tourist information office.

High-speed train tours from Rome to Florence typically depart from Termini Station and arrive at Florence’s Santa Maria Novella Station. This train ride covers 260.7 km (162 miles) and takes about 90 minutes.

If you’re not joining a guided day tour, you can expect to pay around $32 for a ticket.

Rome to Florence Day Trip Itinerary

After arriving in Florence, you’ll either explore the city with an expert guide or alone, depending on the tour package you booked. These are both great options, but if you’d like to learn about the history and culture of Florence, taking a guided walking tour is probably your best option.

If you’re exploring Florence solo, we’ve created an easy-to-follow itinerary that ensures you get a fully immersive experience of the birthplace of the Renaissance. Have a look below.

1. Basilica of Santa Maria Novella

Conveniently located about a minute away from Florence’s main train station, the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella is ideally the first stop you should make after your arrival.

This 13-14th century church has a stunning marble facade, and inside, you’ll find extraordinary religious artworks like Masaccio’s Trinità (Holy Trinity) and the Crucifix by Giotto.

Walk across the piazza to the Museo Novecento, where you’ll see interactive exhibits and artworks from the 1900s onwards. Before you head to the next attraction on this itinerary, be sure to check out the Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy, one of the oldest in the city.

There is nothing like it, the pharmacy boasts a frescoed interior featuring ancient books and statues.

2. Mercato Centrale (The Central Market)

If you want to experience the typical day in the life of a local in Florence, there is no better place to do this than at the Central Market. Famous for its inexpensive leather goods, fresh produce, and artisanal inventory, this market is the best spot for eating and souvenir shopping.

On the ground floor, you’ll find a locally-made products and fresh foods market boasting several stalls. This part of the Central Market opens from Monday to Saturday, from 7 am until 2 pm. You’ll have limited time, so we suggest you explore this floor before heading up.

The first floor of the Central Market is where you’ll find a food court. It features several small restaurants, tasting rooms, and wine bars where you can indulge in local specialties like lampredotto, porchetta, and trippa. This part of the market opens daily, from 8 am to midnight.

Of course, you’ll also find typical Italian dishes here, like pizza, roast fish, fried vegetables, and buffalo mozzarella. We recommend you have lunch here to fuel up for the adventure ahead.

3. Palazzo Medici Riccardi

The House of Medici is one of the most influential banking families and political dynasties that existed in Italy. Famous for funding the Renaissance, this art-loving family built and expanded many buildings in Florence, including the Palazzo Medici Riccardi.

So, if you’re a history buff eager to learn more about this mighty family, visiting the Palazzo Medici Riccardi is a must. The palace is famous for its magnificent Magi Chapel, which features frescoed walls painted by Benozzo Gozzoli. Donatello and Michelangelo also worked here.

Other highlights you’ll love to see at Palazzo Medici Riccardi include the arch-filled internal courtyard, the manicured Medici garden, and the Hall of Mirrors, boasting golden walls.

4. Galleria dell’Accademia

You cannot possibly spend a day in Florence without seeing the city’s extensive collections of art, paintings, and sculptures. The Accademia Gallery is one of the best places to admire world-class artworks.

This art museum is famous for housing Michelangelo’s David statue, and it displays the largest collection of the artist’s works in the world. But there is more to see at Accademia Gallery, including the Coronation of the Virgin by Jacopo di Cione and the Tree of Life by Pacino di Bonaguida are other masterpieces you must see.

Accademia Gallery is one of Florence’s top attractions, so book a skip-the-line guided tour to bypass the long queues. You’ll have a multilingual guide who shares insights on the museum’s outstanding Gothic and Renaissance artworks.

Pro tip : When booking a ticket, choose a time slot that works for you – keeping in mind the travel time from Rome to Florence, and walk to the museum.

5. Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Florence Duomo)

Florence is well-endowed with majestic churches. The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is one of the most beautiful churches in the city and a must-see if you admire Gothic architecture. It is the fourth-largest church in the world, so there’s plenty to see.

A skip-the-line tour of the Florence Duomo takes you through the church’s famous frescoes, private passages, and rooftop terraces, where you’ll get a close-up of Brunelleschi’s dome. The cherry on top will be the sweeping views of the city you’ll get from Cupola del Brunelleschi.

Tip : Typically the guided tours are for 2.5 to 3 hours, if you are pressed for time, we recommend visiting the Douomo from the outside. Or you can skip one of the museum visits.

6. Piazza del Duomo + Giotto’s Bell Tower

Just steps away from the cathedral, you’ll find the Piazza del Duomo. This lively square is arguably the most famous in Florence, being surrounded by many top attractions.

Sitting in the heart of Florence, this piazza boasts must-see architecture like the Giotto Bell Tower.

Around the square, you’ll find plenty of things to enjoy. From vibrant street artists to cafes, cocktails, bars, and pizzeria where you can indulge in tasty treats. You’ll want to take your time here so you don’t miss out on seeing some of Florence’s top attractions.

This is also the perfect place to catch a breather and grab a drink and pizza before continuing.

7. Palazzo Vecchio

Boasting a brick-faced facade and a gigantic clock tower overlooking Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio serves as Florence’s town hall. Its interesting history and great architecture are some reasons why people visit this place, but its art collection is also something to look out for.

A skip-the-line entry ticket to Palazzo Vecchio offers you a secret passage tour through the palace. You’ll see many Renaissance artworks, marvel at secret Medici rooms, and find off-the-beaten-path locations in the Palazzo Vecchio Museum, like a mysterious stairway.

Pro tip: We recommend just going on a stroll at the piazza in the interest of time.

8. Uffizi Gallery

One of the most prominent art museums in Florence (and arguably in Italy) is none other than the Uffizi Gallery. Located minutes away from the Piazza della Signoria, this gallery is famous for its great collection of paintings and sculptures dating back to the Middle Ages.

Get yourself a skip-the-line entrance ticket and admire masterpieces from the likes of Giotto, Michelangelo, and Da Vinci. Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus” is also among the relics you’ll see here. Uffizi Gallery is unique compared to other art museums in Florence.

Walking through the gallery is like going back in time. As you stroll through artworks chronologically arranged from the 13th to the 18th century. There are also archaeological collections in the Uffizi Gallery, such as Roman and Greek sculptures.

Pro tip : Just like the Accademia Gallery, you will have to book tickets ahead of time and have to choose a slot. Based on the ticket availability you will have to adjust this itinerary.

9. Ponte Vecchio

Walk over to the Ponte Vecchio, and enjoy the view of the River Arno. The Old Bridge is known for the shops that are built along it, but we loved it more for the uninterrupted views of the river and its surroundings.

(Located near the Ponte Vecchio is the Pitti Palace and can spend some time at the Boboli Gardens here – we have included that as an option below).

10. Sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo

Finally, your day trip from Rome to Florence ends with one of the most magical sunsets in Italy. This square is an excellent spot for panoramic views of Florence and beyond. The 360-degree views and skyline scenery are even more stunning at sunset time .

This could be the highlight of your trip, so be sure to arrive early (at least an hour before sunset) so that you can get the best spot. The square boasts a huge replica of the David statue at the center, as well as stalls selling football shirts, crafts, and many other Italian souvenirs .

More Things to Do in Florence Italy

We have included additional activities that you can swap for any of the itinerary stops above.

As the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence has provided the world with many artists, sculptors, scientists, and engineers, and Da Vinci is one of the most famous among them.

Museo Leonardo Da Vinci Florence

The intellectual is credited with conducting many experiments and creating futuristic inventions that were groundbreaking during the Renaissance. And you can see and marvel at most of these extraordinary items at the Leonardo Da Vinci Interactive Museum.

For a classic Florentine experience, take a cooking or pasta-making class and learn how to make delicious homemade Italian dishes. There are several tour providers around Florence, and they range from three-hour classes to full-day tours.
