Cruise luggage tags ⚓ Do you need to print luggage tags to check-in for your cruise?

So you can carry your own luggage onto the cruise ship if you want, or you can do a luggage drop-off before you go to check-in for your cruise.

If you want to do a luggage drop-off, then you will need to put cruise luggage tags on your bags before you drop them off.

You only need the cruise luggage tags if you will be dropping off your luggage to have your bags delivered to your cabin by someone else.

If you will be carrying all of your bags onto the cruise ship yourself, then you do not need the cruise luggage tags.

cruise luggage tags to deliver suitcase to stateroom

These cruise luggage tags are similar to the tags that are put on your bags when you do checked baggage for your flight .

The cruise luggage tags will identify your bags so they will end up at your cabin on the cruise ship.

Your luggage will be delivered directly to your cabin.

It is typically left in the hallway outside your cabin.

Important note: You may not get your checked cruise luggage until later in the day. So if there’s anything you want to have immediately upon boarding the cruise ship, then be sure to have a separate carry-on bag for that.

So you can print these luggage tags that identify your luggage at home before you leave for your cruise.

cruise luggage tags

You will need to print out as many luggage tags as you have bags, plus you might want to print off extra just in case.

If you won’t be using any cruise luggage tag holders, may also want to bring along some basic tape so you can tape the luggage tags to increase the chance of not ripping the luggage tags.

You will also want to bring a mini-stapler to staple part of the tag.

If you’re flying with your luggage and you will be checking it in for your flight, you generally don’t want to attach the cruise luggage tags for your flight.

Or if you do, have extra luggage tags in case the tags get ripped in the process or something.

Do you need to print the cruise luggage tags?

You don’t NEED to print the cruise luggage tags before you arrive at the cruise port.

If you don’t have a chance to print the luggage tags (or can’t), then you can also get tags for your luggage when you arrive at the cruise ship terminal.

But most people like to have them printed off before they arrive.

It will reduce an extra step you need to do at the cruise port on embarkation day.

If you’re traveling and/or you don’t have access to a printer, then in the US you can go to a place like fedex to print off your luggage tags.

You can do self-service printing at fedex .

To do this, you can first save a copy of the luggage tag as a pdf.

Then, you can either email that pdf to yourself or save it to a USB.

Then, you can access either your email or that USB when you go to fedex to print off your luggage tags.

Another option to print your cruise luggage tags is to go to a local library.

You don’t need to be a resident of the local community to go to the library!

How to print your cruise luggage tags

How to get your cruise luggage tags will vary by cruise line.

Here is information directly from cruise lines.

The way you get luggage tags can change, so be sure to see the cruise line website for the latest information.

The information below is from each of the websites in August 2023.

Carnival luggage tags

How to print Carnival cruise luggage tags:

Your Carnival Cruise Lines luggage tags will be included with your eTicket. Please ensure 1 tag is printed, filled in and attached to each piece of luggage prior to arriving at the terminal on the day of departure. These tags will enable delivery of your luggage to your stateroom.

See updated Carnival luggage tag info.

How much luggage can I bring? To help you plan, we suggest you limit your luggage to a maximum of one bag per person, if traveling on cruises of 3-5 days duration, and no more than two bags per person, for cruises of 6 days or longer. In addition, you must personally carry-on any boarding documentation (passports, Visas, I.D), valuables, medications and items which require special handling. Guests who are scheduled to arrive at the terminal before 1:30 PM, usually check their bags with a porter so they can be free to enjoy lunch on Lido Deck before access to their stateroom is granted. Checked baggage service is only available until 2 hours before the ship’s published sailing time (printed in the cruise documents). Guests arriving after this time will be responsible for taking their bags on board. Each checked suit case and carry-on suit case should not weigh more than 50 pounds, and when lying flat, bags must not exceed 16 inches high by 24 inches wide (the length of the bag is not a factor). For security screening purposes, all luggage should be unlocked. Oversized luggage and locked luggage may cause delivery delays. Personalized luggage tags are included in the guest’s Electronic Documents (available once online check-in is completed). It is not necessary to print the tags in color. Carnival luggage tags must be affixed to your baggage prior to arriving at the terminal. Additional tags can be obtained at curbside from the porter. Porters will re-tag any luggage tag with a TBA cabin assignment. Curbside porters are customarily provided a $1 tip per bag. They are not employees of Carnival and should a guest experiences any problems, they must report it to porter management on site. Since the screening and movement of large coolers through embarkation is an impediment to the boarding and security screening process, large coolers are not permitted as carry-on or checked luggage. Small, personal-sized coolers, no larger than 12 inches x 12 inches x 12 inches, for the purpose of housing small quantities of non-alcoholic beverages and/or medications are permitted as carry-on luggage.

Cruise Luggage Tags F.A.Q.’s

cruise luggage tag holders

How will you get luggage tags for your cruise?

Once you complete your online check in on your cruise line’s website, you’ll be instructed to print out your cruise documents, which will include a boarding pass and luggage tags. The luggage tags will often be printed with your name, cruise ship, sailing date and cabin number.

If you’re in a guarantee cabin , your stateroom may not have been assigned, and the cabin number may be left blank. If this is the case, it’s just fine.

It’s a good idea to print out at least 2 luggage tags for each member of your family or travel party. A little extra cruise tip is to keep one “extra” with you and your cruise documents.

Can you order luggage tags through your cruise line?

In some cases, you can request adhesive printed luggage tags from your cruise line. This should be done after you receive a notification that your cruise documents or edocs are ready, however leave about 2 weeks before your cruise sailing date. This may not be available in every country, and may vary by cruise line.

You can check with your cruise line or travel agent for information specific to your booking.

Printing, folding and attaching cruise line luggage tags

It’s very simple to print your cruise ship luggage tags. I like to make several copies, so I have enough to label my cruise carry on bag, garment bag, as well as my regular size suitcases .

Instructions for how to fold the luggage tags will be on each paper (usually in 3). When folded, you can staple each luggage tag onto the handles of your luggage. Make sure to bring a mini stapler with you, especially if you go to a hotel a night before your cruise.

You may want to bring some scotch tape to reinforce the paper luggage tags as well.

Should You Purchase Cruise Luggage Tag Holders?

Cruise luggage tags aren’t a necessity for cruising, however they do make things much easier. By using the plastic luggage tag holders , you eliminate the need for stapling and using tape, and won’t worry that paper luggage tags may fall off.

Cruise luggage tag holders are durable and reusable, and truly may be one of the best purchases you ever make for cruising .

Something to note is that some cruise lines use longer luggage tags, while others use shorter tags. Make sure to check to see which luggage tag holders are right for your cruise line. I’ve listed them below in this post for your convenience.

What if you forget your luggage tags at home?

In a worst case scenario, if you forget your luggage tags at home , you can ask the porters at the cruise terminal on boarding day for assistance. They will usually be able to provide you generic tags before embarkation .

Useful article! You can also create personalized luggage tags online.

' src=

I guess you can, although you will need to use the actual cruise line tags for boarding. Personalized or novelty luggage tags are good additions. Glad you liked the article.

' src=

Is there one luggage tag holder that will fit all of the cruise line’s tags?

Not really, although it seems the shorter wider tags fit most. Longer tags are generally Royal Caribbean and Celebrity.

' src=

What’s the specific size dimensions for Carnival cruises please? I bought the 2.75 in x 4.125 in.

I don’t have the specific dimensions – you might find the answer in a Carnival facebook group or on cruise critic. If you bought the Carnival size on Amazon, that should be good (read the reviews if you aren’t sure).

Enjoy your cruise,

Hi Ilana, I’ve only begun to view your videos and read some bits of your (well-designed) website, and I’m already a fan of yours! You’re easy to understand, well-versed, easy to hear and extremely likable! Thank you for helping me prepare for our very first cruise together (as husband and wife) to embark in October on Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas. God Bless You!

Thanks for much for your kind comment. Your cruise sounds wonderful – I think you’ll love this ship.

' src=

Hi Ilana! Love your site! I’ve never used luggage tag holders before, but thought I’d try them for our Celebrity cruise this time. I ordered the ones specifically for Celebrity. When I print the tags in my edocs, they come out way smaller than the tag holders. Are they supposed to fit the exact width/height of the holders? I don’t seem to be able to print them out any larger.

Hi Louise, I wonder if it may a printer setting. I think the luggage tags usually print to a regular 8 x 11 paper size.It will likely be a bit smaller than the tag size. If you’re really not sure, perhaps it’s best to contact the cruise line.

Have a great cruise!

Buying Guide

Lost luggage is a well-known hazard of traveling, but in those unfortunate cases, your luggage will often be delivered within days of arrival at your destination. When an airline loses your bag, there are requirements that they reimburse you for damage and loss.

But what happens when a cruise ship loses your bags? Theoretically, your bags should be somewhere on the ship once you’ve carried them on board, but those vessels are enormous, making it easy for a bag or two to be misplaced. In some cases, bags are confiscated if a prohibited item is found inside, but if that’s the case, they’re typically fairly easy to track down. It’s when a bag somehow loses its way between boarding and your room that you can have a tougher time.

That’s where the right cruise luggage tags can come in. When you have a cruise scheduled, you’ll typically get documentation as part of the before-cruise check-in process . That documentation will include electronic luggage tags, which you then affix to your luggage. These tags have information crew members can use to determine your name and cabin number. The best thing about these tickets is they don’t have your identifying information printed on them. Only authorized crew members will know which guests go with each piece of luggage.

Cruise lines might issue paper documents, but they aren’t responsible for providing holders. You can, of course, attach the paper directly to each suitcase, but that doesn’t protect the paper from damage. A plastic holder will completely encase your paper ticket, ensuring that it not only doesn’t get separated from your bag, but it also is safeguarded against exposure to rain and dirt.

Not all luggage tag holders are created equal, though. If you’re going to invest in these protective devices, make sure you look for one that’s designed to remain attached to the suitcase even if it’s tossed in with other items.

What to Look For

  • Luggage tags usually come in sets. Often, they’re sold in groups of four, six or eight. For families or travelers with multiple bags, a larger set can come in handy. However, you could also consider setting some of your tags aside for use in future cruises.
  • Durability goes beyond how well the plastic sheath protects your luggage tag. Your tag will attach to your bag using a ring that goes through an eyelet. If the ring isn’t sturdy enough, you could find it doesn’t hold, but the same goes for the eyelet. Look for a holder with an eyelet that’s reinforced to avoid tearing when pressure is applied.
  • If you forget your cruise luggage tags on the day of your trip, don’t worry. Most cruise lines can provide one at check-in, although they typically don’t supply protective holders.
  • Unless you’re fortunate enough to live within driving distance of the port, a flight will be part of your cruise vacation. That means you’ll also need luggage tags to ensure your suitcases get from your departure point to your destination. Although having the cruise line information on your luggage will help, also make sure you have your name on your luggage during your flight in case it’s lost between airports.
  • Not all cruise lines use the same luggage tags. Check the dimensions of the tags used by your cruise ship to ensure you’re getting a holder that will accommodate it.
  • Those who plan to cruise often might want to invest in luggage tags that use a rust-resistant ring to secure them to the bags.
  • Some luggage tag sets come with ID holders that include lanyards. This will come in handy for maneuvering around the ship. If a cruise ship ID badge isn’t included, look into purchasing one separately.

A room with a view can be a hot commodity on a cruise. But if you’re traveling with Royal Caribbean, you might not even need an exterior cabin to get that view. The cruise line has installed virtual views in interior cabins on some of its ships. The high-quality digital video is fed directly from cameras mounted on the exterior of the ship.

You don’t just get video of the ocean, though. Royal Caribbean builds in a virtual balcony along with sounds to make the experience authentic. You can adjust the volume of the sounds or even shut them off if you need some peace and quiet. One great byproduct of the new feature is that it allows you to quickly glimpse what the weather is like before leaving your cabin for the day.

Introduction

Welcome aboard the Princess Cruise! As you embark on your exciting journey, one essential item you’ll need is a luggage tag. These tags not only help identify and track your luggage throughout the voyage but also serve as a convenient way to identify your belongings during transfers and disembarkation. In this article, we will explore various options for obtaining luggage tags for your Princess Cruise.

Having properly labeled luggage is crucial for a hassle-free cruise experience. Without luggage tags, it can be challenging for crew members to identify and deliver your bags to your stateroom promptly. This can cause unnecessary delays and inconvenience. Additionally, having accurate information on your luggage tags will make it easier for you to locate your suitcases among the sea of bags when disembarking at various ports of call.

In the following sections, we will discuss three main options for obtaining luggage tags for your Princess Cruise. These options include ordering tags directly from the Princess Cruise website, obtaining them at the cruise terminal upon arrival, or designing and printing your own personalized tags. Each option has its own advantages and considerations, ensuring that you can find the most suitable method for your needs.

So, whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveler, keep reading to discover how to obtain luggage tags for your Princess Cruise and ensure a smooth and organized embarkation process.

Understanding the Importance of Luggage Tags

Luggage tags play a crucial role in ensuring that your belongings reach the correct destination throughout your Princess Cruise. By attaching these tags to your suitcases, you provide essential information that allows the cruise staff to handle and deliver your bags efficiently.

Here are a few key reasons why luggage tags are essential for your cruise:

  • Identification: Luggage tags help identify your bags among the thousands of others on board. They typically include your name, contact information, and stateroom number, making it easier for staff to locate and deliver your luggage.
  • Organization: By using luggage tags, you can keep your belongings properly organized. The tags provide a clear designation of your stateroom, ensuring that your bags are delivered to the correct location and reducing the risk of confusion or misplaced luggage.
  • Security: Luggage tags can help enhance the security of your belongings during transfers and disembarkation at different ports of call. With your contact information clearly displayed on the tag, it becomes easier to locate your bags if they are accidentally misplaced or lost.
  • Efficiency: Properly labeled luggage tags enable the cruise staff to handle your bags more efficiently, reducing the time it takes for your suitcases to reach your stateroom. This allows you to start enjoying your cruise experience without unnecessary delays.

It is important to note that Princess Cruise offers designated tags with a specific design that makes them easily recognizable by the cruise staff. These official tags also come with a barcode that helps track and manage luggage throughout the journey.

Now that you understand the importance of luggage tags, let’s explore the various options available for obtaining them for your Princess Cruise.

Option 1: Ordering Luggage Tags From the Princess Cruise Website

If you prefer a hassle-free and convenient method for obtaining luggage tags for your Princess Cruise, ordering them directly from the Princess Cruise website is an excellent option. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Visit the official Princess Cruise website and access your booking details.
  • Navigate to the “Guest Check-In” or “My Account” section, where you should find an option to order luggage tags.
  • Provide the necessary information, including your name, stateroom number, and mailing address, to ensure the accurate delivery of the tags.
  • Confirm your order and proceed with the payment if any fees are associated with the tags. Alternatively, some cruise lines provide complimentary luggage tags for their guests.
  • Once ordered, you can expect the luggage tags to be mailed to your provided address in advance of your cruise. It is advisable to order them well in advance to allow for any shipping delays.

When you receive the luggage tags, ensure that you fill out the required information accurately and attach them securely to your bags. The tags provided by the Princess Cruise website are designed to be easily recognizable and facilitate efficient handling by the crew members.

Ordering luggage tags from the Princess Cruise website offers the advantage of convenience and peace of mind. You can be confident that the tags provided will meet the cruise line’s requirements and provide the necessary information for smooth luggage handling throughout your journey.

However, keep in mind that there may be a deadline for ordering the tags online. It is best to check the website’s guidelines and policies regarding luggage tag orders to ensure a seamless experience.

Now that you know how to order luggage tags from the Princess Cruise website, let’s explore another option for obtaining them at the cruise terminal upon your arrival.

Option 2: Obtaining Luggage Tags at the Cruise Terminal

If you prefer a more immediate approach and prefer to collect your luggage tags in person, you have the option of obtaining them at the cruise terminal upon your arrival. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Upon arrival at the cruise terminal, look out for designated areas where luggage tags are distributed. These areas are usually easily accessible and well signposted to assist passengers.
  • Locate a representative or staff member stationed specifically for distributing luggage tags. They are there to assist and ensure that you receive the appropriate tags for your cruise.
  • Provide the necessary information to the staff member, such as your name, stateroom number, and any other details required to fill out the tags accurately.
  • Once you receive your luggage tags, it is essential to fill them out correctly before attaching them securely to your bags. Ensure that all the required information is legible and visible to facilitate smooth luggage handling.
  • Remember to follow any specific instructions or guidelines provided by the staff at the terminal regarding the use of the tags. They may have additional information or recommendations to make the process more efficient.

Obtaining luggage tags at the cruise terminal offers the advantage of personal interaction and immediate accessibility. You can ask any questions or seek clarification on the proper use of the tags directly from the staff members present.

It is important to note that the availability of luggage tags at the cruise terminal may vary depending on the cruise line and specific embarkation procedures. Some cruise lines may only provide tags upon request or during designated hours. To ensure a seamless experience, it is advisable to check the cruise line’s official website or contact their customer service prior to your departure.

Now that you know how to obtain luggage tags at the cruise terminal, let’s explore an alternative option for those who prefer a personalized touch.

Option 3: Designing and Printing Your Own Luggage Tags

If you have a creative streak and prefer a personalized touch for your luggage tags, designing and printing your own tags can be a fun and unique option. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Start by gathering the necessary materials such as cardstock or heavy-duty paper, a printer, adhesive laminating sheets, and a hole punch.
  • Choose a design template or create your own using graphic design software or online templates. Ensure that the design includes essential information such as your name, contact details, and stateroom number.
  • Once you have the design ready, print it out using a high-quality printer. Make sure to print multiple copies in case of mistakes or need for extra tags.
  • Cut out the printed tags along the outline. Consider using a ruler and precision cutting tools for clean and professional-looking edges.
  • Next, protect the printed tags by adhering each one to an adhesive laminating sheet. This will make them more durable and resistant to water damage during your cruise.
  • After laminating, use a hole punch to create a hole at the top of each tag. This is where you will thread a secure strap or string to attach the tag to your luggage.
  • Once the tags are prepared, fill out the necessary information on each one, making sure it is clear and legible.
  • Finally, attach the custom-made luggage tags to your bags securely using a sturdy strap or string.

Designing and printing your own luggage tags allows you to personalize every aspect according to your preferences. You can incorporate your favorite colors, fonts, or even add unique design elements that reflect your personality.

However, it is crucial to ensure that the tags you design meet the size and information requirements set by the cruise line. Double-check the guidelines provided by the cruise line to ensure that your custom tags comply with their standards.

This option gives you the freedom to be creative and adds a personal touch to your luggage. Just remember to create your tags well in advance of your departure to allow for any adjustments and printing time.

Now that you know how to design and print your own luggage tags, let’s explore some tips for using them effectively.

Tips for Using Luggage Tags Effectively

Now that you have obtained your luggage tags for your Princess Cruise, here are some essential tips to ensure their effective use throughout your journey:

  • Fill in the information accurately: When attaching the tags to your luggage, make sure to fill in the necessary details accurately. Include your name, contact information, and stateroom number. Double-check for any spelling errors or missing information.
  • Attach the tags securely: Use a sturdy strap or string to attach the luggage tags securely to your bags. Ensure that the tags are visible and easily accessible for the cruise staff.
  • Protect the tags: If you are using paper-based tags, consider laminating them or using clear adhesive sleeves to protect them from wear and tear. This will make the tags more durable and resistant to water damage.
  • Use distinctive and recognizable tags: Opt for luggage tags that stand out from the crowd. This can help you easily identify your bags among the sea of luggage during transfers and disembarkation.
  • Keep a copy of the information: It is always a good idea to have a backup of your luggage tag information. Take a photo or make a note of the details on your phone or travel documents as a precaution in case the physical tag becomes misplaced or detached.
  • Remove old tags: Before attaching the new luggage tags for your Princess Cruise, make sure to remove any old tags from previous trips. This will avoid confusion and ensure that the correct information is displayed on your bags.
  • Monitor your bags: While the cruise staff strives to deliver your luggage promptly, it is always wise to keep an eye on your bags and monitor their whereabouts. This can help promptly address any issues or concerns regarding your luggage during the cruise.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your luggage tags serve their purpose effectively throughout your Princess Cruise. Properly labeled and easily identifiable bags will make the embarkation, transfers, and disembarkation processes smoother and more streamlined.

Now that you are well-equipped with knowledge on obtaining and using luggage tags for your Princess Cruise, you can enjoy a stress-free and organized voyage.

Safe travels and bon voyage!

Having properly labeled luggage tags is essential for a smooth and organized experience on your Princess Cruise. Whether you choose to order tags from the cruise line’s website, obtain them at the terminal, or design and print your own, there are options that cater to different preferences and needs.

Ordering luggage tags directly from the Princess Cruise website offers convenience and ensures that you comply with the cruise line’s requirements. Obtaining tags at the cruise terminal allows for immediate accessibility and personalized assistance. Designing and printing your own tags adds a unique touch and allows for creative expression.

Regardless of the method you choose, it is crucial to fill in the necessary information accurately, attach the tags securely, and follow any specific instructions provided. Taking steps to protect the tags and keeping a backup of the information can also prove beneficial during your journey.

Remember, luggage tags serve as identification, organization, and security measures for your belongings throughout the cruise. By using them effectively, you can minimize the risk of lost or misplaced bags and ensure a seamless experience from embarkation to disembarkation.

U.S. tourist faces 12 years in prison after taking ammunition to Turks and Caicos

An Oklahoma man faces up to 12 years in prison on a Caribbean island after customs officials found ammunition in his luggage.

Ryan Watson traveled to Turks and Caicos with his wife, Valerie, to celebrate his 40th birthday on April 7. They went with two friends who had also turned 40.

The vacation came to an abrupt end when airport staff members found a zip-close bag containing bullets in the couple's carry-on luggage. Watson said it was hunting ammunition he had accidentally brought with him — but under a strict law in Turks and Caicos, a court may still impose a mandatory 12-year sentence.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," Watson told NBC Boston in an interview conducted last week that aired after their first court appearance Tuesday.

"I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there,'" he said.

The couple were arrested and charged with possession of ammunition. Authorities seized their passports and explained the penalties they faced.

Valerie Watson said in the interview: "When I heard that, I immediately was terrified, because I was like we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home, and this is such an innocent mistake."

The charges against her were dropped, and she returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after the court hearing to be reunited with her two young children.

"Our goal is to get Ryan home, because we can’t be a family without Dad," she said.

The couple also spoke about the financial burden of a much longer-than-planned trip. "This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan Watson said.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning to travelers in September about a law that strongly prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, an overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas that is a popular vacation spot.

It said: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest."

The embassy added: "If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody."

The embassy and the government in Turks and Caicos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The same thing happened to another American, Bryan Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, who was arrested after ammunition was found in his luggage before he tried to board a flight out of Turks and Caicos in February. He said he accidentally left it in his bag.

Hagerich was on a family vacation with his wife and two young children but has now been in the country for 70 days. He spent eight days in prison before he posted bail.

"It’s incredibly scary. You know, you just don’t know what the next day may bring — you know, what path this may take," Hagerich told NBC Boston.

"You know, it’s certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It’s been the worst 70 days of my life," he said.

Hagerich, once a professional baseball player, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the MLB 2007 June amateur draft from the University of Delaware.

His case goes to trial May 3.

An Oklahoma tourist says he faces 12 years in prison in the Caribbean after he mistakenly left 4 bullets from a hunting trip in his carry-on duffel bag

  • Ryan Watson was on vacation when he was charged with illegally carrying ammo into Turks and Caicos.
  • He and his wife, Valerie, say the four bullets in their duffel bag were unknowingly left there from a hunting trip.
  • Watson now faces 12 years in prison, alongside several US tourists charged for similar offenses.

Insider Today

An Oklahoma man traveling with his wife in the Caribbean territory of Turks and Caicos faces 12 years in prison after four rounds of ammunition were found in his luggage.

Ryan and Valerie Watson arrived in Turks and Caicos earlier this month to celebrate his 40th birthday with several other couples, their families said in a GoFundMe. NBC Boston reported that the Watsons arrived on April 7.

But the pair, who have two young children, were arrested in the self-governed British territory after airport security found the four bullets in their carry-on duffel bag.

Their families' GoFundMe said the ammo had been left in the bag unintentionally, and was from a prior deer hunting trip.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for white-tailed deer, and I recognized them, and I thought: 'Oh, what a mistake.' I had no idea that they were in there," Ryan Watson told NBC News.

Valerie Watson was released from the charges on Tuesday and flew back to Oklahoma to reunite with her children.

But her husband remains in Turks and Caicos, and was granted $15,000 bail the day after by the local supreme court, according to a police statement.

He now faces 12 years in prison, which is the minimum custodial sentence for bringing firearms or ammunition into Turks and Caicos.

Ryan Watson must stay on the islands and report twice a week to a local police station while waiting for his hearing, which is set for June 7.

Meanwhile, his family is trying to raise $300,000 for his legal fees and housing in the Caribbean.

"Isolated from their family, friends, and children, they face mounting legal fees, living expenses, and the overwhelming stress of their situation," their GoFundMe reads. "The emotional and financial toll is immense, and they are at risk of losing everything."

Related stories

"We were trying to pack board shorts and flip flops," Valerie Watson told CBS News . "Packing ammunition was not at all our intent."

The Watsons did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider through their GoFundMe.

Eight US tourists prosecuted since February

It is illegal to bring firearms or ammunition into Turks and Caicos, and penalties apply regardless of the offender's status or country of origin, according to the local attorney general's chambers.

Several tourists caught under this law were previously let off with just a fine, while at least one was given a prison sentence under the minimum limit.

But in February, a court of appeal ordered that all offenders be given at least the minimum sentence of 12 years in prison.

At least eight tourists from the US have since been prosecuted under this rule, per the attorney general's chambers.

Another American tourist, 31-year-old Tyler Wenrich , was charged on Tuesday with possessing ammunition after he arrived in Turks and Caicos on a cruise ship, according to local police.

"While going through a security checkpoint, it was discovered Mr Wenrich allegedly had ammunition in his possession," a police statement said.

Amid the recent spate of tourist arrests, the US State Department published a September advisory warning US citizens that it wouldn't be able to secure their release if they brought firearms and ammo into Turks and Caicos.

"We strongly encourage you to carefully check your luggage for stray ammunition or forgotten weapons before departing for TCI," the advisory said.

The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider.

Tourism is a key revenue for Turks and Caicos, and in 2019 provided about $787 million, or 65% of the island's GDP, to the territory, per a 2023 report by the Commonwealth Chamber of Commerce.

The Caribbean archipelago is a popular port of call for US cruise ships, and this year has seen a 127% jump in tourist arrivals — the largest increase in the world — compared to 2019, the United Nations World Tourism Organization said in February.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

where to get cruise luggage tags

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
