lake Mckenzie at Fraser Island

THE BEST TOUR OF K’GARI is the K’gari Explorer Tours 2-day coach tour . You get to see all the highlights and are with a knowledgeable guide. I absolutely loved it and simply can’t recommend it enough

See prices here.

Fraser Island is actually the former name of the island. It is now officially is named K’Gari. This is the traditional name and it means “paradise”. This is the best way to describe this beautiful island in Australia because it truly is a paradise.

In this article, we tell you everything about the best things to do on Fraser Island for 2 days.

🔎 Table of Contents

Fraser Island Itinerary

Now is the time to discover exactly what to do in Fraser Island (K’Gari). Here is the itinerary

Day 1: Lake MacKenzie, Central Station, Lake Wabby and 75-mile beach

Today we will start exploring the middle part of the island, which is closer to the ferry terminal.

Stop 1: Going for a swim at Lake Mackenzie

Lake Mckenzie on Fraser Island Queensland Australia

Your first stop will be Lake McKenzie . It is a freshwater lake situated near Eurong. It’s very famous for being one of the clearest lakes in the world and for its super white sand.

You can get there by car. There is a sand road going from the 75mile beach to Lake MacKenzie.

Whether you are driving yourself or are on a bus tour, please note that this road is quite bumpy. Make sure to put your seat belt on and be careful!

From the carpark, there is a walking path that will lead you to Lake McKenzie.

Lake Mckenzie Fraser Island water

Once you step on the sand, you will discover how thin, soft and white it actually is. The colours are incredible there!

The lake itself features several shades of blue. On the edges, the water is crystal clear, completely see-through. As you get closer to centre it becomes this beautiful turquoise and then deep blue towards the middle.

It’s pretty incredible!

Lake McKenzie is a great place to go for a swim. The water is warm and is known for its health benefits! It gives you very soft skin and hair!

The beach itself is also beautiful. The sand is so white and soft! The perfect spot to lie down and work on your tan.

Stop 2: Visiting Central Station in the rainforest

creek boardwalk central station

From Lake McKenzie, drive to Central Station campground. This will take about 30 minutes.

Located in the heart of the rainforest, Central Station is an old historical site on Fraser Island.

For a lot of time, logging was a pretty big deal on the island. A lot of people were working there and cutting trees. Central Station was the main logging camp. Fraser Island is home to a lot of timber trees that were particularly good to make ships.

Eventually, logging on Fraser island was finally prohibited and a reforestation scheme started.

Fraser Island is the only place in the world where plants and trees grow in the sand. Most of the species are native of the island so preserving it is very important

However, because of its historical background, Central Station is now a good place to visit for travellers!

Strangling trees near central station on fraser island

You can go on the Central Station walk. It’s a great way to discover the rainforest and its unique features.

You will be walking along a beautiful creek with crystal clear water and loads of plants around.

Up until the early 1900s, people were allowed to drive through the creek but when Fraser island became world heritage, they decided to build the boardwalk so now we can all enjoy this beautiful place without spoiling it!

You will also discover the famous strangling trees on Fraser Island.

What is a strangling tree and how does it work, do I hear you say? Well, here are some explanations!

For that to happen, you will need one big tree and a second small one. The smaller one will grow branches all around the first one up and dig roots into the ground.

Over the years, the branches will completely strangle the tree and kill it to be able to get all the nutrients from the ground.

Stop 3: Visiting the dunes and Lake Wabby

Lake Wabby on Fraser Island

Once you’re done, it’s time to head back to the car and drive to Lake Wabby. This will take about 1 hour.

Lake Wabby is a freshwater lake located on the eastern side of Fraser Island, near the 75-mile beach.

It’s the deepest dune lake on Fraser Island.

Unlike Lake McKenzie, Lake Wabby features a deep green colour and is surrounded by sand dunes on one side, trees on the other. It’s a great place to explore as it doesn’t look like anything else on the island.

The dunes are pretty tall and it’s good fun to walk up and down. It’s not a hard walk but it takes about 45 minutes to get to Lake Wabby. Some of the dunes can be a bit steep.

sand dunes near lake wabby

It’s better not to wear shoes and they will be full of sand by the end of it. Thongs ( flip flops ) are not a good option either as they make it way harder to walk.

Once you finally get to the lake, you can go for a refreshing dip!

This is not an acidic lake which means that you can also see fish inside.

The great thing about Lake Wabby is that it’s not as popular as other places on the island which means it doesn’t get as busy.

Day tours don’t go to lake Wabby so you will only see people that opted for a multi-day tour or are self-driving.

Stop 4: Driving on the 75-mile beach during the golden hour

75 mile beach on fraser island queensland

Once you’re done with Lake Wabby, it should be late afternoon which means you can enjoy a drive on the stunning 75-mile beach during the golden hour!

The 75-mile beach is the main beach on Fraser Island. It lies on the eastern side of the island and as the name suggests, it’s 75 miles long.

This is an important landmark on Fraser Island.

Firstly, that’s where most Fraser island attractions are located.

Secondly, it’s the main highway on Fraser! Yes, you’ve heard me right! On Fraser Island, the beach is the highway.

This means you need to adopt the same rules than on any other road. Drive on the left, no speeding…

Before you hit the road, make sure to check the tides. You can only drive on the 75-mile beach when the tide is low. If not, you may be stuck! Something to definitely consider and pay attention to.

If you are travelling around Fraser Island with a tour guide, you have nothing to worry about. S/he will know exactly when to go.

Stop 5: Watching the sunset on Fraser Island (bonus)

Sunset on fraser island

If you are not a morning person, then watching the sunset will be a better option for you. Unfortunately, there isn’t much to see on the eastern side of the island as the sun sets in the west but you can see it from the other side.

If you are staying at Kingfisher Bay resort , then you are at the perfect place!

Alternatively, you can opt for a sunset cruise from Hervey Bay when you come back. See prices here.

Day 2: Maven Shipwreck, Pinnacles, Champagne Pools, Indian Head and Eli Creek

Today we will head further north on the island.

Stop 1: Watching the sunrise at Eurong Beach

Sunrise on eurong beach

If you are up for an early start, head to the beach for the sunrise. The 75-mile beach is located on the eastern side of Fraser Island, making it the perfect spot to watch the sunrise!

It’s so pretty and colourful! Definitely, an amazing way to start the day.

If you are staying at Eurong Beach Resort , you only have to walk a few minutes to the beach and can make it back on time for brekkie!

Stop 2: Going on a scenic flight

Fraser island scenic flight

Fraser Island is one of the only places in the world where you can take off and land on the beach!

If you are looking for a unique experience, taking a scenic flight on Fraser Island is a must-do!

Air Fraser Island is the company operating these flights. Prices start at $80.

You can find the planes on the beach. During this 15 minutes flight, you will see all the main Fraser Island attractions from the sky! It’s so pretty!

If you booked the 2-day Fraser Island Explorer tour , the driver will bring you there on the first day. If you want to, you can choose to go on the flight (it’s not included in the tour though).

Even if you don’t take the flight, it’s a pretty cool thing to see these planes taking off and landing on the beach!

Stop 3: Discovering the Maheno Shipwreck

SS Maheno Fraser Island shipwreck

The S.S. Maheno is one of the most famous Fraser island tourist attractions.

Little fun fact about the ship, Maheno means “island” in Maori. It was an important ocean liner and was even used during WWI.

In 1935, it was caught in a cyclone and was driven ashore, on Fraser Island.

It’s ideally located on the 75-mile beach, making it a great stop for people visiting Fraser island.

Fraser Island shipwreck Maheno

You can pull over on the side of the beach and go see the wreck. Please note, you shouldn’t be going too close to it. It’s recommended to stay at least 3 meters away from it as it can be dangerous.

There are loads of photo opportunities with the Maheno shipwreck. It’s very pretty and impressive.

Stop 4: Admiring the beautiful Pinnacles

Visiting the pinnacles on Fraser island

Situated only a few minutes away from the Maheno shipwreck, the Pinnacles are one of the most unique geological formations in Australia .

The sandy cliffs are known for their rainbow of colours!

If you’ve visited Rainbow Beach before, you will find it a bit similar except that these are like a cliff instead of a beach.

The coloured sand layers are a result of thousands of years of wind, waves and rain hitting the cliff.

It’s a very pretty sight and is very important in the aboriginal culture. Butchulla people have loads of stories and legends about the Pinnacles on Fraser Island.

You can stop on the side of the beach and walk to the Pinnacles. There is a small path. Make sure to keep an eye on the plants as there can be snakes and lizards there.

snake at the pinnacles on fraser island

Fraser Island is home to some of the most poisonous snakes in the world so that’s something to be aware of.

If you see one, don’t panic and just make your way. No matter what, do not touch it!

Stop 5: Swimming at the Champagne Pools

Champagne Pools Fraser island-29

Situated on the Eastern side of Fraser Island, between Waggy Point and Indian Head, the Champagne Pools are the only place on the island where you can safely swim in seawater.

It’s not allowed to swim on the beach as it’s particularly dangerous. There are currents and sharks!

The Champagne Pools are a natural rock formation lying between the ocean and the cliffs. They create natural protection and each time a wave hits the rock, the pool fills up with water.

The waves are so powerful when they crash against the rock that they make the water fizzy and bubbly in the pools, hence the name Champagne pools!

Fraser island champagne pools

They are a great place to swim on Fraser Island, take photos and enjoy some family time.

Stop 6: Soaking up the views at Indian Head

75 mile views from Champagne Pools

Indian Head is the most easterly point on the island. It’s situated in the northern part of the 75-mile beach.

This coastal headland is a popular spot on Fraser Island as it features the best views on the island!

You can park on the beach, at the bottom of the cliff. From there, you will see a walking path going up. Take it and walk through the bush until you reach the rocks and cliffs.

From there, you will be able to admire stunning views over the beaches and coast.

Indian head view point on fraser island

It’s also a popular spot to spot whales, dolphins and turtles!

whale watching from indian head fraser island

If you are visiting in winter, keep an eye at the horizon to see the whales.

turtle indian head fraser island

Pro tip: don’t forget to look at the water near the bottom of the cliffs. There are loads of turtles there. People often focus on trying to see the whales and completely miss out on the turtles!

Stop 7: Swimming at Eli Creek

Fraser Island Eli Creek

Eli Creek is located by the 75-mile beach near the S.S. Maheno. It’s the largest creek on the eastern side of Fraser Island. The water is so clear and pure!

The sand has been filtering the water for 100s of years which is why it’s so clear! The creek pours millions of litres of water into the ocean every hour. Quite impressive if you ask me!

Eli Creek is a very popular place on Fraser Island.

You can stop there for a picnic before going swimming. Most people stay in the part by the beach but it’s worth walking on the boardwalk down into the rainforest. It only gets prettier!

As you walk on the path, you will discover more vegetation and can truly appreciate how clear the water is. It’s a bit odd, to be honest, it looks almost green. In reality, it’s just completely see-through and the greenish colour comes from the reflection!

Extra activities worth adding your to Fraser Island Itinerary

Hiking the fraser island great walk.

Hiking on Fraser Island

If you want to explore the wilderness of Fraser Island, hiking the Fraser Island Great Walk is a must-do!

This 90km walk runs all the way from Dilli Village in the southern part of the island up to Lake Garawongera.

If you choose to walk the entire trail, you will need about 6-8 days to do so. You can break the walk into 6 sections of maximum 15km per day. There are campgrounds at every milestone.

This is a great way to truly experience Fraser Island, discover the top 5 things to do on Fraser Island and many secret spots!

Before you hit the trail, make sure to be prepared. Fraser Island is a pretty wild place.

There are loads of dingoes and very few facilities. You will need camping equipment, a good backpack, walking shoes and food. Try to take food that is carefully packed so the dingoes can’t smell it.

Alternatively, you can choose to only do parts of it. This is a great option for people who like walking but don’t want to go on such an adventure.

The best section to hike in one day is the one between Lake McKenzie and Central station. The walk is very scenic and it’s a great way to discover 2 of the most famous sites on Fraser Island.

Whale watching on Fraser Island

Whale watching on fraser island

Whale watching is one of the most popular activities on Fraser Island in winter.

Each year from June to October, the whales start their migration up the coast of Australia. There are many places in Australia where you can go whale watching but Fraser Island is definitely one of the best.

There are 2 ways to see the whales from Fraser Island.

If you are self-driving or on tour, you can go to Indian Head. This cliff is known for its beautiful views. In winter, it’s also a great spot to see the whales.

If you look at the horizon, you may see whales and even dolphins jumping around.

Of course, you never know if you will see some. You need to be a bit lucky but if there is one place to see them, that’s there!

Another option is going on a whale-watching cruise from Hervey Bay . You will be spending 4 hours on a catamaran and cruise around the Great Sandy Strait. It’s a great way to see the whales up-close. And it’s eco-certified!

Click here to see the latest prices.

Dolphin watching on Fraser Island

Dolphins on fraser island

Want to see dolphins instead of whales? That’s possible!

A good place to do so on the island is Indian Head. Exactly like for the whales, you can spot dolphins from there. The only issue with that is as dolphins are smaller, they can be harder to spot.

If you want to see it up close, you can opt for a dolphin cruise from Hervey Bay. See prices here.

Discovering Pelican Bank

If you fancy discovering one of Fraser island hidden gems, Pelican bank is the perfect place for you.

Located between Fraser Island and Hervey Bay, Pelican bank is a beautiful stretch of sand featuring crystal-clear blue waters. It’s a great way to explore some lesser-known parts of Fraser Island.

There are no facilities at Pelican Bank so make sure you are taking everything you need with you. It’s very well preserved and off-the-beaten-path!

It’s one of the rare places near Fraser Island where you can swim. The waters are quite shallow which is ideal for kids too!

The best way to get there is by boat from Hervey Bay. You can opt for a half-day tour that includes swimming, fishing and kayaking.

Discovering the aboriginal culture on Fraser Island

The traditional-owners of Fraser Island are the Butchulla people. If you want to know more about their culture, you can opt for a sunset cruise with a Butchulla guide.

It’s extremely interesting. The guide is passionate and will share fascinating facts about Fraser Island.

Learning more about the history of Fraser Island is a very interesting thing and it’s pretty unique.

You will also get to hear songs played with the didgeridoo. It’s the ultimate cultural experience on Fraser Island!

If that’s something you’d like to do, you can book the tour. It includes a cruise and the guided tour. See prices here.

How to get to Fraser Island

Fraser Island Ferry

Unfortunately, getting to Fraser island is not the easiest thing in the world. The island is entirely made of sand which means you need a 4WD vehicle to be able to get to take the ferry and get around.

If you own one, then you need to do is to get a permit for Fraser, book a ferry ticket and be very aware of the driving conditions on the island.

If not, here are your options.

Fraser Island 4WD hire & ferry

If you want to explore Fraser Island on your own, you can choose to hire a 4WD. There are several options to do that. You can choose to rent a 4WD from one of the usual car rentals or opt for a company specialising in vehicles for Fraser Island.

Fraser Island 4WD dingo is a popular company for that.

Hiring a 4WD for Fraser Island is not cheap but it will give you a lot of freedom to explore the island.

No matter what, you will still need to get a permit (extra cost) and be aware of the tides.

Getting stuck in the sand on Fraser Island is a common issue so if you have no previous experience, you may want to opt for a tour instead.

In terms of ferries, you can either take the Fraser Island Barges ferry from Hervey Bay or the Manta Ray from Rainbow Beach.

Fraser Island tours

Fraser Island Explorer tour

Booking a Fraser Island tour is the easiest way to explore the island.

They will take care of everything including food and accommodation. That means you don’t need to worry about being stuck, tides or even preparing your meals.

The tour guide (who is also your driver) has extensive knowledge of the island, its history and will give you plenty of tips.

Going on tour is also a great way to stay safe. Fraser Island is home to a lot of things that can hurt you. Dingoes, snakes… you name it! Guides will give you instructions to stay safe.

Lastly, because they take care of everything, the only thing you have to do is having fun! And believe me, you will have a lot of that!

If you are travelling on your own, it’s also a great way to meet people!

Here are the best tours to Fraser Island:

Swimming. The ocean and waters surrounding K’gari have multiple riptides, no lifeguards patrolling the beaches, and known for shark attacks. We highly recommend NOT to go swimming in the open ocean, regardless of your swimming competency. The weather is quite mild year-round. The temperatures during the Summer reach the low 30’s during the day and Winter nights can hover around 10 degrees Celsius during the night. This trip requires a moderate level of fitness as it involves a number of short walks, allowing you to really get among nature. Please bring sturdy, comfortable walking shoes, comfortable clothing, a cozzie (swimwear), and a towel. Group participation makes up a lot of this trip, so you’ll be required to help with the preparation of meals and cleaning up. These are the kind of tasks that bring a group closer together.

FRASER ISLAND 2 DAY TOUR: THE ITINERARY

To help give a full picture of what you can expect on this 2 day Fraser Island tour , we have created a short itinerary below showing our photos and insight into what we experienced at each of these stunning Fraser Island key sights and destinations:

DAY 1: LAKE WABBY, CENTRAL STATION & LAKE MACKENZIE

MORNING: LAKE WABBY One of our favourite things that we saw on this tour the wonderful Lake Wabby! After a scenic 2.5km rainforest trail, the overhead canopies fade away to open space, suddenly revealing the breathtaking Hammerstone Sandblow dunes, forged  by layers sand over hundreds of thousands of years!

Make your way down to the desert oasis that is Lake Wabby, snuggled between the dunes. With its distinctive emerald green water, Fraser Island’s deepest lake (at 11.4m!) is truly a marvel.

Top Tip: Make sure you bring a bottle of water with you, on a hot day, the walk back up the dunes from Lake Wabby is quite trying!

Fun Fact : Whilst most of Fraser Island’s lakes are inhabitable, Lake Wabbys emerald green water provides a perfect PH for fish to thrive, housing over 12 species – including the rare “honey blue eye”.

Fun Fact : The constant blowing of sand in from the West will eventually swallow and make Lake Wabby completely disappear within the next century – See it while you can!

A must do on any Fraser Island 2 day tour from Hervey Bay is witnessing the beautiful Lake Wabby! Pictured: Jordie taking in the sheer enormity of the Hammerstone Sandblow, Fraser Island, Australia! Photograph taken by Liam.

AFTERNOON: CENTRAL STATION RAINFOREST & WANGGOOLBA CREEK Set deep inland on Fraser Island is the majestic Central Station Rainforest, dubbed the ‘gateway’ of Frasers natural beauty. It boasts an ancient towering rainforest which has thrived for thousands of years against all odds – by growing on sand!

Take a short walk down to Wanggoolba Creek, and sample the tastiest fresh water from a dazzlingly crystal clear creek.

Top Tip: Look out for the many noisy cockatoos circling above the tree canopies, you will certainly hear them before you see them!

Fun Fact : Fraser Island is one of the only places on Earth where rainforests grow on sand! In fact, it incredibly has 206,970 acres of protected forest!

An incredible sight to behold on your Fraser Island 2 day tour is Central Station rainforest - the only rainforest in the world to grow purely on sand!

AFTERNOON: LAKE MACKENZIE Get ready to be charmed by the pure white sands and diamond blue waters of Lake Mackenzie – an absolute must-see on this Fraser Island 2 day tour!

Incredibly made completely of collected rainwater, the lake is perfect for a paddle or short swim. Indulge in a spot of sunbathing at this real life paradise!

Fun Fact: The dark blue areas show where the shallows disappear and drops to approximately 6 metres deep!

Fun Fact : Lake Mackenzie is a special “perched sand dunes lake” – only 80 of them worldwide, Fraser Island has 40 of them!  They are extremely unique as the water is 100% collected rainwater!

Top Tip : No food is permitted at the lake as it attracts wild dingoes. There is a secure, fenced area specifically for picnicking. There are also toilets on-site.

SPOTTED WILDLIFE!

Lace Monitor “Tree Goanna “ One of Australia’s largest lizards, the Lace Monitor can grow up to 2m in length, found in forest terrain across Eastern Australia. They are typically tree-dwelling and carnivorous, their diet mainly consisting of bird eggs, crocodile eggs, insects, small reptiles and even small mammals!

fraser island tour 2 days

Short Eared Mountain Possum Spotted rummaging through our resorts open-bar bins! A well-built possum species with distinctive short round ears, you’ll usually find them dwelling within the moist rainforests. Identified by their dark grey fur and cream underbelly. Their main predators on Fraser include dingoes and pythons.

DAY 2: 75 MILE BEACH, ELI CREEK, MAHENO SHIPWRECK & CHAMPAGNE POOLS

MORNING: 75 MILE BEACH Hiking up the ‘need for speed’ as you whizz along the infamous 75 mile beach! First stop off at The Pinnacles: Vibrant hills made up of white (old) and golden (new) sands, which makes for a beautiful spectacle!

While you’re here, you have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take a scenic flight over Fraser Island in a small plane (at an additional cost which can be paid for on the spot).

Fun Fact: 75 mile beach doubles as an airstrip. It is just one of TWO places in the whole world where planes can take off & land back on the beach!

Jordie admiring The Pinnacles, a multi-tonal vibrant collection of hills made up of sand layers from thousands of years! Photograph taken by Liam.

The Dingo Does Fraser Island have dingoes? Absolutey! Spotted on 75 Mile Beach. Introduced to Fraser Island 5000+ years ago by South East Asian travellers, the Dingo remains like any other wild animal. They need to hunt, mate and secure a place in their pack for survival. They are a protected species, it is an offence to provide food source or disturb them.

MORNING: FLOAT DOWN ELI CREEK Time to let your thoughts float away as you arrive at Eli Creek.

Grab an inflatable rubber ring from your tour guide before heading up the boardwalk. At the top, step into the clear waters and allow it to gently push through the rainforest clearings back to the beach.

As long as there isn’t too many people there, it is a beautiful and relaxing experience!

Fun Fact: Eli Creek has a flow of over 80 million litres per day! During its journey, the water is naturally filtered and resultantly crystal clear when it reaches the sea!

Floating peacefully down the pure waters of Eli Creek - a must-do on your Fraser Island 2 day tour! Photograph taken by Jordie.

AFTERNOON: MAHENO SHIPWRECK Maheno Shipwreck is truly a sight that must be seen to be believed!

S. S. Maheno was a luxury Scottish cruise-liner turned WW1 hospital ship, who got lost at sea during a cyclone whilst on-route to Japan in 1935.

Remarkably a few days later, she washed up on Fraser Island’s shore, and has been here ever since for Fraser Island’s visitors to marvel at daily!

Fun Fact : During its time as a WW1 hospital ship, the S. S. Maheno carried over 27,000 deceased and wounded.

Top Tip: Look closely inside the wreckage, you are likely to see the many crabs who have taken up residence!

Top Tip: A great place to see and snorkel amongst multiple shipwrecks in Australia is on Moreton Island, an island just off Brisbane .

Maheno Shipwreck is an iconic sight you must see on your Fraser Island 2 Day Tour (1 Night) From Hervey Bay!

AFTERNOON: INDIAN HEAD LOOKOUT The next stop is the vantage point of Indian Head Lookout, the most easterly point of Fraser Island. Walk just 5 to 10 minutes uphill in the sand for the most glorious ocean lookout.

As well as the sandy beaches stretching for miles, be sure to look down to the ocean – where you can spot sharks, sea turtles, manta rays and even (seasonally) pods of Humpback whales!

Fact: It is said that Indian Head Lookout was named as such by Captain James Cook when he saw Fraser Island aboriginals standing on the viewpoint.

One of the best views you'll see on your Fraser Island 2 day tour: The view of 75 Mile beach from atop Indian Head lookout! Photograph taken by Jordie.

AFTERNOON: CHAMPAGNE POOLS Pop on your swim suit and wade your way into the Champagne pools – a collection of natural, shallow rock pools formed for you to paddle and relax. Be sure to look closely – you will most likely be joined by many small transparent fish!

Top Tip : Be sure to stay well away of the rocks dividing the rock pools from the sea. Not only can the waves be treacherous, the sharp rocks have been aptly nicknamed ‘The Human Cheesegrater’!

Top Tip : There are large public toilets at the Champagne Pools car park!

Jordie dipping in the naturally formed Champagne pools, which is a must-do on Fraser Island! Look out for the tiny little fish in the rock pools too!

VISITING FRASER ISLAND: “KNOW BEFORE YOU GO” FAQ’S

How long should you spend on fraser island.

We would suggest 2 days (1 night) is the perfect amount of time to spend on Fraser Island. With many Fraser Island 3 day tours (with 2 nights), the title is misleading as spend most of the first and last day travelling with little exploring happening.

The key is to review the exact tour itinerary to make sure they are utilising time well and seeing all the best sights. This is exactly what our afformentioned Fraser Island 2 day tour does!

CAN YOU VISIT FRASER ISLAND WITHOUT A TOUR?

Yes, it is possible to visit Fraser Island without an organised tour. However, it is crucial to keep in mind that this means you would have to self-drive a 4WD and navigate yourself across the sandy trails in search for all the destination hotspots.

DOES FRASER ISLAND HAVE ROADS?

The only sealed roads that you can find on Fraser Island are in and around the two main resorts: Kingfisher Bay and K’Gari Beach resort. Outside of this, paved roads disappear and are replaced with bumpy sand trails.

IS IT HARD TO DRIVE AROUND FRASER ISLAND?

Considering about 95% of Fraser Island access routes are on sand, yes, it is quite a challenging experience to drive around Fraser Island on your own.

You need the confidence to drive this rough terrain, the know-how of what to do if you get stuck in the sand and a requirement of being over 21 years old with 3 years driving experience.

We would say for most people, the best option would be to take a guided Fraser Island tour !

A photo showing the rough terrain that the sand creates for driving on Fraser Island, solidying why it is best to take a Fraser Island 2 day tour!

WHAT ARE THE BEST MONTHS TO GO TO FRASER ISLAND?

The best months to go to Fraser Island are between end of July – October . These months mark the end of Australia’s Winter heading into the Spring.

This period will be slightly quieter from tourists (outside of peak season), and the weather on Fraser Island during these months should overall be pleasant and sunny.

On a separate note, July – October is also the key season for to see whales around Fraser Island. Hervey Bay is one of the best places in the world to see humpback whales, so you do not want to miss the opportunity to head out on a whale watching tour from Hervey Bay on your return from Fraser Island!

CAN YOU SWIM IN THE OCEAN AROUND FRASER ISLAND? 🏊❔

Unfortunately no, it is not advised to swim in the ocean around Fraser Island. Idyllic as it looks, all beaches are unsupervised and the currents can be extremely strong and treacherous.

CAN YOU DRINK THE TAP WATER ON FRASER ISLAND?

Yes, you can absolutely drink the tap water on Fraser Island. In fact, due to its natural filtering systems in its creeks, the water on Fraser Island is some of the purest water you can drink!

FRASER ISLAND FUN FACTS

  • Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island, made up completely of sand! It is 123km long, 22km wide at its widest point.
  • Fraser Island, which soaks up rainwater like a sponge, has over 100 lakes! The most common type are ‘window lakes’, effectively a hole storing all the collected rainwater.
  • Fraser Island is home to the deadliest spider in the world – the Funnel Web Spider! 40 different species of Funnel Web can be found in Australia. They tend to reside in moist, dark areas such as under fallen leaves and logs.
  • The island was named after a famous shipwreck survivor, Eliza Fraser, the wife of the ship’s captain. The ship, Stirling Castle, was wrecked in 1836. Fraser survived on the island for 6 weeks before finally escaping back to the mainland.
  • Controlled fires are lit on Fraser Island during the Winter months to help remove excess leaf debris. This is done to try and contain wildfires caused by extreme heat of the intense Summer months.
  • Saltwater crocodiles have previously been found on the beaches of Fraser Island! They are not permanent residents, but do make a surprise visit on occasion!

It should be noted that adventure travel involves risk. Whilst we make every effort to safeguard clients, we cannot be responsible for personal injury or loss due to the actions of our clients which are beyond our control. We highly recommend that all clients have travel insurance covering illness, injury, loss or damage to personal belongings and not being able to travel on the confirmed date of departure. You should also ensure your travel insurance will cover special circumstances including weather events preventing guests from travelling to their tour departure destination and cancelled flights due to unforeseen circumstances.

Transfers between tours can be made at the suppliers discretion, however, it should be noted that supplier fees may apply. Tour transfers also incur a $20 administration fee.

It is compulsory that all cancellation requests are in writing and sent via email to [email protected]. Cancellations attempted via online chat or phone will not be actioned.

Supplier Cancellations:

The Service Operator reserves the right to alter prices, alter itineraries, apply a fuel surcharge, cancel departures, arrange alternative transport and vary itineraries and services if necessary.

All departures and itineraries are subject to weather. Tours may be changed or cancelled for any reason at the discretion of the Service Operator. If the Service Operator has to cancel the trip or activity (prior to departure) and we cannot offer a suitable alternative, then a refund will be given minus a 20% administration fee and any associated card fees. We strongly recommend that you have travel insurance, especially during the wet season.

In the unlikely event of your trip being cancelled or stood down, all guest communication is required to go through our Online Store via telephone or email. While there is a Sailing Whitsundays retail outlet located Airlie Beach, please be aware that they operate as a separate entity and are unable to access reservations made by the Mr Travel online department.

All refunds are in Australian Dollars and must be made to the card of payment. Sailing Whitsundays/Mr Travel is not liable for exchange rate fluctuations or fees, or any other merchant/bank fees associated with domestic and/or international transactions.

Where a full refund is applicable, there is the option to transfer the whole cost of the tour to another tour or “Credit” to avoid the administration fee. A transfer fee of $20 will apply.

You will be emailed confirmation once the refund has been processed. Once the refund has been processed, it may still take time for the banks to clear the amount. Please allow 7-10 business days for the funds to clear into Australian accounts and up to 21 business days for international accounts.

Accountability/Misconduct:

All Service Operators have the right to provide client feedback and to cancel bookings based off of feedback from other Service Operators.

Please enjoy your travel experience in a kind and responsible manner.

Sailing Whitsundays/Mr Travel will treat this as any normal client cancellation and therefore the cancellation fees stated in the Client Cancellation Policy will apply.
