CHOOSING THE RIGHT SUSPENSION FOR YOUR PROJECT: CRUISEMASTER CRS2, XT AIR, AND XT COIL COMPARED

Selecting the right suspension system for your off-road trailer project is a crucial decision that can significantly impact your camping experience. If you’re serious about getting off the grid Boreas Campers offers three of the best suspension kit options out there: Cruisemaster CRS2, XT Air, and XT Coil. We'll explore the differences between these suspension systems to help you make an informed choice for your project.

x cruise suspension

First up is the CRS2. CRS stands for Country Road Suspension and this is Cruisemaster’s second iteration of this model. The dual shock system allows for trailer specific adjustability while the simple spring design offers relatively low maintenance. With a 3500lb weight capacity it is the lightest in the lineup, but it still packs a punch.

It's an excellent choice for those seeking a smooth ride, both on the road and off. CRS2 provides excellent stability, reducing sway and body roll during travel. This is particularly beneficial for those who want a comfortable and controlled ride.

The CRS2 is also very low maintenance. A few pumps of lithium grease every few months to keep the swingarm bushings fresh is all the system requires to stay maintained and ready for the trail. The bearing and hub system requires the same maintenance schedule as any generic travel trailer and, if maintained, will be reliable for many thousands of miles.

For those looking for a smaller, more nimble setup the CRS2 is the best option if you can keep your project under the 3500lb limit.

The CRS2 kit comes with the suspension system, weldable hangers and shock mounts, shocks, 10” electric brakes, e-brake cable system, and 10” drums with a 6 by 5.5 bolt pattern.

x cruise suspension

Up next we have the XT coil suspension, often referred to as the CRS2’s bigger brother. The XT has the same simple dual shock and spring ride system, but is longer and provides more travel than the CRS2. With a 5200lb axle weight rating it is also designed for larger trailers with bigger wheel and tire combinations.

It's an excellent choice for those who plan on building a longer or taller trailer built to handle rough terrain and able to handle less forgiving trail conditions.

Just like the CRS2, the maintenance schedule is very simple and you can expect to go many thousands of miles on and off-road with very little maintenance.

The XT Coil kit comes with the suspension system, weldable hangers and shock mounts, shocks, 12” electric brakes, e-brake cable system, and 12” drums with a 6 by 5.5 bolt pattern.

x cruise suspension

Lastly we have the Cruisemaster XT Air suspension system. While this system is the most complicated, it does offer the most flexibility, adjustability, and capability out of the Cruisemaster lineup. Not to mentioned the XT Air suspension provides the smoothest ride out of the three options we offer. With this particular airbag suspension you can expect to have up to 8” of height adjustability with your trailer and you can adjust each side independently. This can definitely come in handy on and off the trail. Just like the coil version this suspension is built to handle 5200lbs of trailer weight, but it will require a little bit more fore thought as you plan out your trailer build.

Being an airbag suspension system the trailer will obviously require some sort of compressed air source. Ideally there is some sort of powered pump and air tank onboard the trailer so users can deflate and inflate the airbags as needed. There are many options for electronic or manual air suspension controllers and you can have a fully adjustable independent trailer suspension system for relatively little cost.

If you’re savvy with suspension systems and electronics it is possible to have programmable ride heights and auto leveling functions with the aid of an electronic control system and a couple inclinometers. While we don’t expect your average DIY trailer to have these functions, we do want those interested to know that it is definitely possible with the right mind or minds behind the project.

The XT Air is a suspension system designed to provide enhanced comfort and adjustability for your trailer. It's ideal for those who frequently travel on uneven terrain or seek a customizable suspension setup.

The XT Air kit comes with the suspension system, air bags, air hose, weldable hangers and shock mounts, shocks, 12” electric brakes, e-brake cable system, and 12” drums with a 6 by 5.5 bolt pattern.

x cruise suspension

The choice between Cruisemaster CRS2, XT Air, and XT Coil depends on your specific travel needs and preferences. If your trailer is on the smaller side and you need a stable, low-maintenance suspension, Cruisemaster CRS2 is an excellent choice. If your plans require something more heavy duty, but you still dig the simplicity and low maintenance of a spring suspension, the XT Coil would work perfectly. For those who value comfort and adjustability on various terrains, the XT Air offers customization and a smoother ride.

With the right suspension, you'll enjoy a smoother, more comfortable journey, whether you're cruising down the highway or venturing off the beaten path. Cruisemaster has been making off-road suspensions for over 40 years and is arguably the best independent suspension manufacturer in the industry. If you’re serious about getting off the grid, Cruisemaster is the most reliable and heavy duty option out there.

Patriot X1 Review

On arrival at Patriot’s Molendinar HQ on the Gold Coast, we are met by Justin, Sarah, Tommy and Michael. There’s a bright blue Toy Hauler, with all the bells and whistles, hitched up behind a 76 series ’Cruiser out front. The place is buzzing. The Toy Hauler is the major prize from the latest series of Patriot Games and the winner is here this very morning to pick it up. No wonder the place is buzzing. It got me more than a little excited to be hitching up the new X1 behind the ute for a weekend testing.

Now, it had been some time without rain in South East Queensland, but on this particular weekend, the heavens had other ideas. We were heading for the Gold Coast Hinterland to a nice little property near Canungra to see just what the latest X1 had to offer. A little bit of rain wasn’t going to stop us!

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

They say first impressions count, and this is definitely so with the X1. The design and shape haven’t really changed all that much over the years, but that’s a good thing.

From that initial sketch in the sand on Stradbroke Island, the X1 of 2019 looks uncannily like the models that have gone before, with each model getting upgrades and improvements along the way. That Patriot Games TV show that I mentioned before isn’t just an excuse to escape the rat race, it’s where the team practise what they preach. It’s where they test out new designs and ideas. Where they find out what works, what doesn’t and what can be improved. And to be honest, there is no better, or tougher proving ground than the Aussie bush.

After a quick run through from Michael and Tommy on the ins and outs of the camper, we filled the water tanks, strapped down the gas bottle, made sure the fridge was cold and hitched it up to my ute. I don’t know whether it was good fortune or good management, but the Antarctic White X1 sure looked like it belonged behind my white Patrol.

BEHIND THE TOW TUG

Leaving the factory to disappear in the wing mirrors, it wasn’t long before we were out of suburbia, enjoying the rain on the windshield and the fresh smell of the bush. The twists and turns of the drive to our destination proved to be no problem for the little X1. My only problem was making sure that it was still connected to my vehicle. With a Tare of only 940kg, and an ATM of 1600kg, I could barely even notice the camper behind me up and over the hills. At only 1.85m wide, it was narrower than my canopy, so every time I went round a corner, a quick check of the mirrors was required to allay any fears of it being left behind for some lucky punter to find on the side of the road. While we’re on the subject of weights and measures, this compact camper is only 3.3m long and 1.75m tall, meaning it will quite easily fit in a standard garage. Just leave it in there all packed up and ready to go for that quick weekend escape. The compact dimensions of the X1 also put it in great stead when the bitumen gives way to the dirt, making for an extremely agile and nimble package offroad.

NUTS AND BOLTS

So what makes the X1 such a pleasure to drag into the bush?

Firstly, it comes down to the Tare weight of the unit at just 940kg, and 1600kg fully laden. That’s light by anyone’s standard. This low weight is achieved by clever design and continually challenging the status quo. Just replacing non-structural elements of the galvanised steel chassis with aluminium has reduced the overall Tare weight without compromising on strength. Match this with an aluminium monocoque shell and you’ve got yourself a lightweight masterpiece.

Then there are the diminutive dimensions, and last but not least, the suspension setup. As we have come to expect from Patriot, there’s not a lot of ‘off the shelf’ componentry that goes into making one of their campers. And that’s exactly how it is with the suspension of the X1. Designed exclusively for and in conjunction with the team at Cruisemaster, specifically for the low Tare weight camper, the fully independent X-Cruise suspension (with coil springs and twin shocks) keeps the X1 in contact with terra firma even over the most rutted of tracks. And if you want to make levelling the camper when in transit or at the campsite as easy as the flick of a switch, you can option up to airbag suspension.

Not content with what was available in aftermarket wheels, the X1 runs on satin black PCOR alloy rims, designed and developed by the team at Patriot. Federal Couragia 285/75R16 Mud Terrains are wrapped around them for that tough, offroad look and maximum traction in the rough stuff. Making sure the X1 stops when it is supposed to are 10” electric drum brakes. A nice little feature tucked up under the wheel arches on both sides of the chassis is a pair of powder coated plates with a couple of lines on them. What are these, I hear you ask? Well, they’re a guide to the optimal ride height of your camper. Very clever indeed.

There’s not much else hiding underneath the camper, apart from the two water tanks which are tucked up nice and high away from stray rocks. Up front on the drawbar, the standard in offroad hitches, the Cruisemaster DO35, takes care of camper staying attached to tow tug, while safety chains provide the back up. There’s a heavy-duty jockey wheel (with its own mount on top of the drawbar when not in use), HD hand brake, fresh water tap and an Anderson plug connection to charge those batteries up while in transit, also located up at the pointy end. If required, an optional 200mm draw bar extension can be fitted to your trailer in the event you have a tray back ute or rear mounted spare tyre.

Out the back, and fitted within a recessed rear bumper are the LED tail lights and indicators. There’s also a pair of recovery points if you find that going forwards is no longer the best option.

I would hazard a guess that if I asked 100 camper trailer users what their most sought after feature of a camper trailer was, an ‘easy set up’ would get the majority of votes. Who wants to be banging around for hours setting up when there’s fish to catch or a nice warm fire to sit around? Or maybe it’s 10pm and you’ve only just got in to camp and all you want to do is crawl into bed. Well, I’m here to tell you that you can set up the redesigned CS3 integrated tent on the X1 in less than 10 minutes. With a bit of practice, you’ll be setting personal best records every time you head off camping. The 270º awning from Supa Peg gives plenty of shade, or in our case, a nice dry spot out of the rain, and it only takes another couple of minutes to fully erect. The awning is attached to a pair of scissor arms with gas struts to assist in lifting it up from the travel position. There’s also a kid’s room (which can sleep three kiddies) that can be added to the main tent, along with extra canvas sails to further extend the undercover area.

Being that there was just the two of us (our fur babies sleep in the ute), we opted not to add the kids room or the extra sails, allowing us to kick back and enjoy a refreshing beverage in pretty quick time. The tent also has an integrated tropical roof for extra protection from the elements. I can personally vouch for the quality and water proofness of the Australian made Wax Converters canvas that makes up the Patriot tent. It rained pretty steadily for more than five hours that night without either of us having to endure an impromptu shower.

The other thing that we didn’t have to endure was an uncomfortable night’s sleep. As with pretty much everything else, Patriot have designed the mattress too. The gel-top, pocket spring mattress nearly got folded up and put in the back of my ute to take home! You gain access to your night time sanctuary by way of the redesigned folding bed and TentStep V2. Their original TentStep folding staircase revolutionised the way you got in and out of the elevated sleeping platform; now the V2 has been improved by adding lighter, moulded step treads with increased traction.

With everything set up, it was time to start opening the multitude of doors and hatches that fill every conceivable flat surface on each side of the trailer. Being only a small trailer, space is at a premium, so clever design and highly organised storage is key.

Starting with the nearside of the trailer there’s two main compartments. The longer one hinges from the bottom and when opened creates a fold-down bench and preparation area. Stainless steel wires hold the bench in position, and it’s these wires that caused me a little grief when using the X1. When I closed the doors, most of the time one, if not both, seemed to flick out at just the wrong moment and stick out from beneath the seal, causing me to have to open the door and try again. There’s probably a trick to it, and everyone else is laughing at me. Oh well, luckily I’ve got pretty thick skin!

Behind the drop-down table is the pantry space, with three pull-out drawers and a slide-out Bromic twin-burner gas stove and grill. The REDARC ‘The Manager30’ battery management system is also housed on the main electrical panel, along with a bank of switches which control the LED lights, water pump and fridge, among others. Conveniently, all of the storage compartments feature their own LED lighting, while an under awning mounted strip light provides ample lighting to the kitchen area. Completing the electrical panel, there’s a couple of USB points, a 12V cig socket, water tank gauge and 240V circuit breaker, all conveniently located in one central location.

Forward of the pantry, the fridge slide with telescopic slide-out kitchen bench and sink (with hot and cold water) is housed. The 60L EvaKool fridge takes pride of place on top, with cutlery and/or crockery storage underneath the bench. The L-shaped kitchen ensures that everything is within arm’s reach when it’s time to feed the hungry hordes.

Out the back of the trailer, after you swing the rear wheel carrier out of the way, you will find the largest storage compartment on the X1. Again, the large door folds down to create a large bench area, which is supported by those stainless steel wires. The lower section of the rear cavern, beneath a false floor, is taken up by a single drawer, divided into two sides. This can be further personalised by positioning the supplied dividers to suit your needs. A cleverly located high shelf keeps all of your poles in the one place and out of the way.

In both rear corners, hidden behind laser-cut panels, are storage hatches for your wet or dirty gear. Just don’t put anything in here that you wouldn’t want covered in bull dust.

The driver’s side storage compartments are a mirror of the passenger side. The rear compartment features a drop-down door, which when open provides another bench. When the tent is set up, this compartment can still be accessed via a zipper in the canvas, so makes an ideal spot to store your clothes or any additional bedding. The forward compartment, which can also be accessed when the tent is set up, houses the Smarttek gas hot-water system and a fixed shelf. If a chemical toilet is part of your camp kit, then this would be the place for it.

Last but not least, there’s the ‘man cave’. Well, at least that’s what the guys at Patriot call it.

Located up front, it’s another big storage box, with a gull wing door on gas struts for easy access. Inside there is the barbecue swing away, which suits the Weber Baby Q. There’s plenty of optional extras for the front box and these include a diesel heater and a utility shelf. If no options are selected, there’s heaps of room for a bag or two of firewood.

Either side of the big box, you’ve got space for a pair of 4.5kg gas bottles. To provide the X1 with even more protection offroad, the front has been coated with Rhino-lining to prevent stone chips.

IT’S A WRAP

So, the sixty-four million dollar question. Is the 2019 Patriot Campers X1 as good as those that have passed into history?

In my humble opinion, yes! Basically, if the X1 was an actor, it would be Chris Hemsworth: Aussie through and through, ruggedly handsome, tough in all the right places and well put together. However, off-stage, things have changed in the way Patriot offer the X1. From 2019, gone are all the bells and whistles that some customers don’t need on every model, and instead Patriot offer a lower-priced, lower-specced base model. But don’t think for a millisecond that you are getting a lower quality product. No way. What you are getting is one of the best camper trailers on the market, one that you can then customise to not only suit your needs, but also your budget. And that’s a win-win if you ask me.

Cruise’s Driverless Taxi Service in San Francisco Is Suspended

California’s Department of Motor Vehicles cited safety concerns for the suspension, about three months after the state allowed an expansion.

An orange and white Cruise driverless car.

By Yiwen Lu and Cade Metz

Reporting from San Francisco

California regulators on Tuesday ordered Cruise, a General Motors subsidiary, to stop its driverless taxi service in San Francisco after a series of traffic mishaps, including one this month when a Cruise car dragged a pedestrian 20 feet after a crash.

The decision by the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles followed a turbulent three months for Cruise. In early August, over the objections of San Francisco officials, state regulators allowed Cruise to expand its service in the city. But a little more than a week later, the D.M.V. told Cruise to cut its fleet in the city in half.

On Oct. 2, a pedestrian was hit by a car, then was hit a by a Cruise vehicle and trapped under the driverless car. As it tried to pull over, the Cruise car dragged the pedestrian until it stopped. Cruise said its autonomous vehicle had “braked aggressively” and blamed the human driver for the incident.

In an initial meeting with Cruise after the October crash, the D.M.V. said, the company showed footage from the car’s cameras that ended with the driverless vehicle coming to a complete stop after hitting the pedestrian. D.M.V. officials later learned through “discussion with another government agency” that the pedestrian had also been dragged, according to a suspension order sent to Cruise.

In a statement, Cruise said it had shown the agency “the complete video multiple times.”

The suspension is a major setback for Cruise, which started testing its autonomous cars in San Francisco several years ago and introduced a limited driverless taxi service in the city last year.

It is also an unwelcome development for the nascent driverless car industry. Big tech and auto companies have invested billions of dollars in the technology, and the expensive cars have in recent months just started to gain some mainstream acceptance. The California regulators’ decision could increase calls for federal regulators to take a closer look at the technology.

“When there is an unreasonable risk to public safety, the D.M.V. can immediately suspend or revoke permits,” the agency said in a statement. It did not say how long the suspension would last.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Cruise said it would pause its driverless operations in San Francisco and was working on enhancements to the cars’ technology. Cruise can still test its autonomous cars in California, but they must have safety drivers who can take over in an emergency.

On a call with financial analysts on Tuesday morning before the state action, Mary T. Barra, G.M.’s chief executive, said the driverless cars had been involved in far fewer collisions than human drivers, but she acknowledged regulatory concerns.

“We do believe that Cruise has tremendous opportunity to grow and expand,” Ms. Barra said. “Safety will be our gating factor as we do that.” She added an assurance that G.M. had plans to support Cruise’s expansion.

Ms. Barra also said G.M. would have more to say about Cruise when it reported its fourth-quarter earnings in three months and at a daylong investor presentation expected to take place in the first half of 2024. Cruise’s expenses were $700 million in the most recent quarter, according to a transcript of the call.

The Cruise cars have drawn considerable criticism from local safety officials, who complained that they were becoming a nuisance, getting in the way of firefighting and other emergency situations. Those complaints have grown louder in recent months as the Cruise vehicles have been involved in several high-profile incidents.

Shortly after another state regulator, the California Public Utilities Commission, allowed the service to expand, at least 10 Cruise vehicles stopped functioning in the middle of a busy street in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood, blocking traffic for 15 minutes. A few days later, a Cruise vehicle drove into a city paving project and got stuck in wet concrete.

The day before the D.M.V. announced its investigation of Cruise’s safety record, a fire truck responding to an emergency call collided with a Cruise driverless taxi on Aug. 17, injuring a passenger in the car.

Less than two weeks ago, Cruise said it had released major updates to the software that operates its driverless cars to help them interact with firefighters and other safety officials. Those updates included the ability to manually take over the vehicle. Emergency responders have had to contact Cruise staff to control the cars remotely when they have gotten in way.

On Oct. 16, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into Cruise’s interactions with pedestrians, including the person who was dragged by a Cruise car. In a statement on X, Cruise called the incident an “extremely rare event.”

At a San Francisco County Transportation Authority hearing on Tuesday morning, Aaron Peskin, president of the city’s Board of Supervisors, said the driverless car industry was “not safe and was immune from any governmental regulatory oversight.”

“If there is any vindication of San Francisco’s position, we just got it, whole hog, from the Department of Motor Vehicles today, albeit sadly rather late,” Mr. Peskin said.

As of Tuesday, Cruise had 50 driverless cars running during the day and 150 at night.

Cruise’s main rival, Waymo, will continue to operate its autonomous cars in San Francisco. Waymo, which is owned by Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has avoided high-profile incidents so far. A Waymo spokesperson declined to comment.

Matt Wansley, a professor at the Cardozo School of Law in New York who specializes in emerging automotive technologies, called on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to determine whether Cruise’s service should also be suspended in other states where it is testing the same technology.

“If Cruise’s vehicles are unsafe in California, they should be unsafe in other states as well,” he said in an interview with The New York Times. “There are inconsistent regulations across the country.”

Mr. Wansley said that while regulators and experts could readily point to accidents involving Cruise vehicles that would not have happened if a person had been behind the wheel, that was not the case with Waymo’s cars.

“Companies should be judged by their on-road safety performance, and there is a significant difference between Cruise and Waymo,” he said.

Neal E. Boudette contributed reporting from Michigan.

Driverless Cars and the Future of Transportation

Autonomous taxis have arrived in car-obsessed Los Angeles, the nation’s second most populous city. But some Angelenos aren’t ready to go driverless .

Cruise, the embattled self-driving car subsidiary of General Motors,  said that it would eliminate roughly a quarter of its work force , as the company looked to rein in costs after an incident led California regulators to shut down its robot taxi operations.

Tesla, the world’s dominant maker of electric vehicles, recalled more than two million vehicles  to address concerns from U.S. officials about Autopilot , the company’s self-driving software.

An Appetite for Destruction: A wave of lawsuits argue that Tesla’s Autopilot software is dangerously overhyped. What can its blind spots teach us about Elon Musk, the company’s erratic chief executive ?

Along for the Ride: Here’s what New York Times reporters experienced during test rides in driverless cars operated by Tesla , Waymo  and Cruise .

The Future of Transportation?: Driverless cars, once a Silicon Valley fantasy, have become a 24-hour-a-day reality in San Francisco . “The Daily” looked at the unique challenges of coexisting with cars that drive themselves .

Stressing Cities: In San Francisco and Austin, Texas, where passengers can hail autonomous taxis, the vehicles are starting to take a toll on city services , even slowing down emergency response times.

A Fast Rise and Fall: Cruise, a subsidiary of General Motors, wanted to grow fast. Now, the company faces safety concerns  as it contends with angry regulators, anxious employees and skepticism about the viability of the business .

Patriot Campers X1-H put to the test

T here’s never been more of an interest in getting out from the confines of the city and leading a simpler life. It’s a romantic concept that has inspired people for countless generations. Australian folklore talks of the vibrant experience of the outdoors. We’re raised on tales of dry riverbeds, magpies warbling as the sun sets and the crackling of a campfire with your feet planted firmly in the dry red earth. It’s as much a part of our national identity as any bridge or sport.

It should come as no surprise then that, in a tidal wave of people wanting to simplify, Patriot Campers’ unique designs have never been more popular. A camping trailer rather than a camper trailer, the Patriot range aims to get people out connecting with the outdoors rather than walling them up inside the double-glazed windows of a caravan.

The X1-H is the latest in its line-up of compact camper trailers, designed to go anywhere – towed behind anything – and enhance the camping experience rather than insulating you from it. We recently had the opportunity to hook it to the towbar of our Ford Everest and attempt to find both their limits when it comes to off-road capability. Here’s what we found.

4 X 4 Australia Gear 2021 Patriot Camper X 1 H 6

FROM THE GROUND UP

Patriot Campers isn’t known for cutting corners, and there’s no greater example of this than its Rigilite chassis. From the ground up the X1-H is designed to not only be extremely durable, but practical off-road and as light as possible.

Pieced together with a combination of galvanised steel and aluminium, the Rigilite chassis uses clever engineering to add rigidity rather than throwing bulk material into the equation like many campers do. Rather than a traditional set of rails with cross members, the frame is a series of cross braces and a combination of box section and C section where possible. In short, it’s designed the same way vehicles are, not box trailers.

Moving underneath, Patriot Campers worked with the team from Cruisemaster Suspension to design the X-Cruise suspension specifically to reduce unsprung weight. The result is an independent suspension set-up that outperforms almost all other options on the market. Twin shock absorbers help fight shock fade in corrugations and add redundancy should one fail, while the twin A-arm design gives ample ground clearance through the ruts or rough country.

4 X 4 Australia Gear 2021 Patriot Camper X 1 H 22

Our test model was optioned with the Tech Pack that stepped the suspension up to a full air-ride arrangement. It means you can raise or lower the camper with the flick of a switch, to clear obstacles or level the bed when camping in uneven terrain.

Up front, a DO35 hitch provides an easy and positive locking mechanism, so you’ll know once it’s connected, it’s staying connected. The design also allows for full 360-degree rotation, allowing the camper to follow no matter how difficult the terrain is and without putting undue load into the camper’s frame, popping a tow ball off, or loading up the tow-tug’s suspension.

The whole lot rides on PCOR 16-inch alloy wheels and 33-inch mud tyres.

Dragging it behind the Everest and it was abundantly clear that anywhere we’d be confident taking the wagon, the Patriot would have no dramas following. It did catch us out briefly on a series of double rock steps, but that finger can be squarely pointed at highway tyres, the same combination with mud or even all-terrain tyres would have seen us climb effortlessly.

4 X 4 Australia Gear 2021 Patriot Camper X 1 H 28

INSIDE THE BOX

Moving up in to the bulk of the camper’s body and it’s abundantly clear Patriot’s flare for intelligent industrial design has been put to good use again. The X1 range is nearing 10 years in development and it’s easy to see in the details.

The bulk construction of the body itself is constructed out of folded aluminium sheeting in its South East Queensland manufacturing facilities. The lightweight material up top helps keep the centre of gravity down low, making the X1-H incredibly stable in off-camber situations.

Fit and finish on the various compartments is impeccable as always, with neat panel gaps and doors latching tight without any rattles that can lead to fatigue failures. The doors pull in tight on automotive seals, which further aids in this process.

4 X 4 Australia Gear 2021 Patriot Camper X 1 H 31

The seals are only part of the efforts to reduce dust ingress on outback journeys. The X1-H features a filtered positive-pressure system, ensuring any gaps that may occur will have clean air pushing out of them, rather than dusty air pushing into them. It’s the little things, you know?

Patriot has kept the overall footprint of the camper’s main box as compact as possible. It does leave the X1-H with a very matter-of-fact, no-frills styling, but it is perfect for the serious off-road conditions it’s designed to excel at. If you’re ducking and weaving through High Country switchbacks or NSW ghost gums, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more appropriate camper.

Beachgoers in South East Queensland will appreciate the full corrosion-resistant paint scheme that’ll keep the camper looking tip-top even after years of beach-work. The front storage box receives a different coating, with Rhino-lining helping absorb the impact of ant stones thrown up from the camper, while the box’s face is angled downwards to stop stones bouncing up and into your back window.

ON THE INSIDE

As nice as the Patriot X1-H is to look at and tow, how easy it is to use is ultimately the defining factor for calling it a win or not. The H in X1-H is a nod towards the ‘Hexocore’ hard-shell rooftop tent that separates this model from others in the X1 line-up.

Setting up the bedding area in the X1-H is one of the simplest in the market, thanks to a few unique designs around the tent. Flick open a handful of over-centre latches and grab out the wireless key fob, and the tent starts opening itself up with a tap of a button. They’ve used a wireless fob rather than buttons in the camper, so you can pack up the camper and tuck in any loose canvas as a one-person exercise. Experienced camper-trailer users will understand.

The lid of the tent tilts up on an angle, providing an insulated hard top over the head of the bed. Once the tent lid is up, the tent folds out in to what could best be described as an awning, enclosing the bed area with a covered standing area as well. If you’re bringing the family or setting up for a longer stay an enclosed room can be zipped on quickly, with a second kids’ room zipping on again with a single pole.

4 X 4 Australia Gear 2021 Patriot Camper X 1 H 24

Back to the bed and it’s a large pocket-spring mattress that folds out into the new available space. A positive-locking base gives a sturdy platform that feels just as solid as any bed on the market. In typical Patriot style, they’ve gone above and beyond again, instead of a ladder up into the bed they’ve designed a mini-staircase complete with a handrail that locks into place.

The stairs are narrow but the handrail does make it an easy affair to get into bed. There’s USB charging points throughout internally with LED lighting. An optional diesel tent heater is a worthy consideration if you spend much time camping during winter.

4 X 4 Australia Gear 2021 Patriot Camper X 1 H 25

OUTDOOR LIVIN’

First thing you’ll notice with the X1-H is the inside really is designed as a place to sleep, not a place to live. The design actively encourages you to sit outside with your feet in the sand, some good music, and plenty of food.

Along the left flank of the camper, a large hatch pops down revealing a small kitchenette complete with everything you need for a serious camp feed. The hatch folds down into a prep area, while the space behind houses a pull-out gas cooker and grill, various pantry options and shelving space.

Behind the door to your left, a pull-out fridge-slide comes out that’ll accommodate most standard 12V fridges around the 60L mark. Underneath, a sink slides out with hot and cold running water from either a gas system or the optional diesel upgrade. The cooker and sink both need to be connected when you’re setting up, but considering the time saved with the tent, it’s hardly worth a mention.

4 X 4 Australia Gear 2021 Patriot Camper X 1 H 14

One thing eagle-eyed readers will spot is the Redarc RedVision system. It’s connected to the on-board battery system and controls everything from the lighting to the inverter and monitors the water tank. It’s flanked by a pair of Airbag Man controls that allow you to fine-tune the X1-H’s ride height or to level off the bed. These are options in the appropriately named ‘Tech Pack’ but really make a difference to the overall usability of the camper.

The whole area is covered under a PCOR 270-degree awning mounted on clever easy-lift brackets. As the camper’s packed height is only around shoulder height, the brackets allow the awning to quickly and securely lift up above head height.

Up front, our storage box was filled with the optional diesel heater, as well as a swing-out barbecue carrier and Weber Mini Q as part of the ‘Essentials Pack’.

Along the driver’s side of the camper, there’s storage perfect for clothing bags or camp chairs, while a rear hatch behind the spare wheel carrier is prime for bulky storage.

4 X 4 Australia Gear 2021 Patriot Camper X 1 H 18

SURVIVE THE APOCALYPSE

While the X1-H’s footprint may be compact and the camping simple, Patriot has gone to great lengths to ensure it’ll do you for the long haul if you’re heading off for the big lap. The heart of the system is a huge 300amp/h of AGM batteries deep within the camper; and they’re kept low to further aid with centre of gravity.

A Redarc Manager 30 system ensures they’ll stay topped up either through the vehicles Anderson plug, the included 130W solar panel up top, or the AC input. It sends power back out through the RedVision system as well as a 1000W Redarc invertor. The RedVision system also controls the on-board water pump that taps into 155L of drinking water mounted underneath.

WHO SHOULD BUY ONE?

If you can’t look down an overgrown track without wondering where it goes. If you daydream about being camped up on the west coast of Cape York with your feet in the sand. If you’ve just about had it with your day job and don’t want to be constrained by deadlines or “you can’t take that camper there”, then the X1-H might be the perfect camper for you.

It’s an all-out experiment in remote camping honed into a polished product with years of revision, and it shows with every inch. From the sub 1000kg tare weight to the impressive approach and departure angles, it’s clearly built to make camping as easy as possible as long as it doesn’t hinder off-road ability.

STANDARD FEATURES WHAT'S NEW?

x cruise suspension

INTEGRATED HARDSHELL ROOF TOP TENT

For the first time ever, we have designed a fully integrated A-Frame style hard shell roof top tent into the body of the Camper Trailer. While the design of an A-Frame style roof top tent isn’t a new one, we have made innovations that will ensure customers will have the best experience possible.  The construction of the hardshell lid on the X2 is 100% Australian made and manufactured in house at Patriot Campers.

The integration of the canvas from the tent and side walls seamlessly blends into the robust construction. For owners camping in cooler climates, an added benefit is the lid’s ability to allow condensation to breathe through the canvas, evaporating out through the top. This dual-functionality ensures comfort and adaptability, enhancing the camping experience across various environmental conditions.

x cruise suspension

THE BEDROOM

Inside the roof top tent lays a mattress, providing a spacious and comfortable area to retreat to. Comfort was important when it came to the design of the X2. At either side of the tent are two large zippable windows as well as a large window that rolls out from the front of the camper trailer, allowing for consistency of air flow into the roof top tent. The X2 is equipped with the capability to extend a front awning that directly covers the ladder, offering added protection against the elements.

The X2 is filled with creature comforts. A LED light is positioned inside the top of the tent as well as interior camp scene lighting. All lighting can be easily adjusted to preferred brightness levels through buttons or via the camper’s app. Within the tent are two USB charging outlets. Strategically placed for convenient charging electronics during the night.

x cruise suspension

DUAL ACCESS ENTRY POINTS

The X2 has dual entry access points into the roof top tent. Enter via an integrated ladder situated at the drawbar of the Camper Trailer or utilise a secondary access point with the detachable side ladder. When not in use, the secondary detachable ladder can be stored in a dedicated location at the rear of the Camper Trailer.

Other Manufacturer Info

While many trailer suspension systems on the market today may take “inspiration” from our original A-Frame arm design it’s the small things we have learnt over the last 5 generations of XT suspension design that keeps raising the bar for performance and functionality.

No longer considered just an “Off-Road” system, Cruisemaster XT takes it’s design queue’s from all terrain types to ensure you can achieve the right ride no matter the terrain making it a legitimate all-terrain system.

Cruisemaster XT is the most versatile caravan/trailer system available on the market today, giving you more options to build the perfect suspension for your needs.

If you are building a chassis to suit this Suspension System please see the Installation Guide above with all the dimensions you need for your design

Simple self-jigging mounts give further weight savings and reduced installation costs. To ensure extended corrosion protection, every arm is coated in a PPG AutoPrime black coating.

The Cruisemaster GT affords you the freedom of effortless touring to your favourite caravan park whilst seeing the sights along the way.
