Take a Snowcoach Through Yellowstone in the Winter

One of the two ways to explore yellowstone in the winter is by snowcoach. this is everything you need to know..

When snow blankets Yellowstone National Park, there’s only two ways to get into the heart of the park: by snowmobile or snowcoach.

In early November each year Yellowstone closes all but one road to normal vehicle traffic. As the snow begins to fly and cover our first national park, a different sort of vehicle gets ready to transport visitors through a winter wonderland. A snowcoach is a shuttle van either on extra large (picture a monster truck) tires or tracks like a snowmobile. These specially designed vehicles are perfect for navigating the park’s unplowed roads and, other than snowmobiles, are the only way to access the interior of the park in the winter. With big picture windows, you’ll be able to see all the sights from the park’s abundant winter wildlife to steaming geysers.

Snowcoaches are a great way to see the park since you’ll stay warm and cozy inside the vehicle, unlike a snowmobile tour where you’ll have to bundle up. Your driver will also be able to share fun facts about the park and easily point out wildlife as you drive. Tours range from half-day scenic drives to full-day excursions to packages where you’ll do both a scenic drive and ski or snowshoe in the park.

A snowcoach is also the only transportation to Old Faithful Snow Lodge , the park’s only hotel other than Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel , open in the winter (note: Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel will be closed winter 2022/23). A stay in the heart of the park in winter is magical. From spending the day skiing or snowshoeing past geysers to curling up next to the fire with a book to ice skating under the stars, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Yellowstone Snowcoach Options

West entrance tours.

Located in West Yellowstone, Mont. , the park’s West Entrance is closed to normal vehicles in the winter months, but is known as the “Snowmobiling Capital of the World.” You can take a guided snowmobile tour in the park from West Yellowstone, but you can also depart on a day tour from this town to see the park from the comfort of a snowcoach. These tour operators offer day trips into the park, usually to either Old Faithful or Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone :

South Entrance Tours

Yellowstone’s South Entrance is located closest to Jackson, Wyo. , a famous winter ski destination thanks to Jackson Hole Resort. Nearby Grand Teton National Park is also home to lots of winter fun including snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. From Jackson, you can head north with one of these tour operators to spend the day seeing Yellowstone by snowcoach, or be dropped off at Old Faithful Snow Lodge for a stay:

Scenic Safaris – www.scenic-safaris.com

North Entrance Tours and Transportation to Old Faithful Snow Lodge

The North Entrance, just outside of Gardiner, Mont. , is where you’ll find the only year-round road open to normal vehicles through the park. In winter, you can drive plowed roads to the Mammoth Hot Springs area and through Lamar Valley to the Northeast Entrance where the tiny Montana towns of Silver Gate and Cooke City await. You can also book a snowcoach day tour into the park, or transportation to the only hotel inside the park besides Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel that offers winter lodging: Old Faithful Snow Lodge.

How Far in Advance Do I Need to Book a Snowcoach Tour?

If you’re using a snowcoach as transportation to the Snow Lodge, it’s best to book your ride as soon as you book your stay since there is only one company at the North Entrance and one company at the South Entrance that offers transportation.

Day tours are more flexible since there are more operators, but it’s best to book as far in advance as possible in order to ensure you get a seat. Last minute reservations may be available, but don’t count on them.

How Much Are Yellowstone Snowcoach Tours?

Yellowstone snowcoach tours range in price depending on which company and tour you choose. In Winter 2022/23 half-day scenic snowcoach tours could be found for less than $100 for adults and less than $50 for children. Transportation, including two pieces of luggage, between Mammoth and Old Faithful Snow Lodge cost $144 for adults and $72 for children each way for the 2022/23 season. While tipping is not required, it’s expected. Be prepared to tip your driver 15-20% in cash.

Be sure to note whether or not your snowcoach operator includes your park pass in your tour price. If they do not, you’ll need to purchase a pass in advance. On guided tours, a 7-day, annual or lifetime pass is only good for one person, so be sure to have a pass for each individual in your group. These passes cost $20 in 2022/23 for adults 16 and over. Children 15 and under are free.

What Do You Wear on a Snowcoach Tour?

While snowcoaches are heated, it’s important to be properly dressed for winter conditions as you’ll be entering and exiting the snowcoach in snowy and cold weather and will likely get out and explore at certain stops along the way.

Dress in layers so that you can be comfortable on the drive but quickly gear up to get out in the cold. A waterproof and insulated jacket, a warm hat, warm gloves and snow boots or other waterproof boots with good tread are recommended. Wool or synthetic fabrics are better than cotton for winter trips as they wick away moisture more quickly.

West Yellowstone, Montana: The Weekend Winter Wonderland

Once Yellowstone National Park ends its productive summer season, it prepares for its scenic winter tourism market. From December to March, twelve or more feet of snow is delivered to the park and surrounding areas. This transforms the region into a winter wonderland. During this time, Yellowstone National Park is only open to “oversnow” travel atop paved roadways that are buried under a deep frosty blanket. The best way for most of us to explore the park is with either a snowmobile or snowcoach tour.

Snowcoach tours have become the most popular way to discover Yellowstone's expansive beauty. When launching your travels into the park from West Yellowstone, Montana, a variety of options and amenities will become available to meet your specific tour needs.

Snowcoach tours involve custom built snow-vehicles that can carry between eight to twelve passengers. Tours are typically about seven hours long. In addition to a specific itinerary, your snowcoach tour also sends along a specially trained interpretive guide. This guide will offer current information and interesting facts about Yellowstone Park's history, geology, wildlife, and current events while guiding the snowcoach along a designated route. These guides are also very helpful in pointing out the best photo opportunities along the way.

Snowcoach Travel in West Yellowstone: A History

Early snow travel in Yellowstone National Park was powered by skis or snowshoes, reserving exploration for only the bravest of adventurers. The year 1948 brought the first instance of motorized travel within Yellowstone National Park. That year, “snowplanes” – which were wingless, airplane shaped vehicles with skis – were introduced. In 1955, the first generation of snowcoaches, called Bombardiers, were used in the park to carry passengers on winter sightseeing tours. At the time, these snowcoaches (produced by Bombardier, a Canadian company) resembled Volkswagen Beetles on steroids. They were originally equipped with two tank like tracks and large steering skis. By the mid 1970's, large passenger vans with various forms of track systems were introduced. Compared to the awkward and uncomfortable Bombardiers, these new generation snowcoaches provided a more warm and comfortable ride for visitors. From 2001 to 2012 snowcoaches evolved to minibuses and midsize buses. These were being converted into luxury track vehicles. These vehicles featured large viewing windows, bucket seats, better PA systems, and plenty of headroom. Largely responsible for today's snowcoach tour market, these types of snowcoach tours now outnumber all other forms of winter transportation in Yellowstone Park. In 2013, Yellowstone National Park officials launched a pilot program to test a type of low-pressure “balloon tire” that could potentially replace the track systems. The U.S. National Park system asked The Brandin' Iron Inn's own Randy Roberson to lead this program because of his extensive experience with snowcoaches over the years. Not only did Randy help in the development of the “luxury snowcoaches” from 2001 through 2016; from 2013 through 2016 he was instrumental in developing all of the fundamental technology that is now industry standard for snowcoaches with low pressure tires. Today the use of these balloon tires provide a quieter ride, better fuel economy, and are easier to maintain. Upon successful completion of the trial in 2016, Yellowstone Park officials converted 75% of its fleet to balloon tires, marking the most significant improvement of snowcoach technology since 1955. In 2017, snowcoaches are state-of-the-art touring vehicles designed for optimal comfort. When booking your snowcoach tour in Yellowstone Park, expect a luxurious, warm ride through a gorgeous winter landscape loved by many.

Snowcoach Tours

The old faithful tour.

Yellowstone's most popular snowcoach tour, The Old Faithful Tour includes a trip through Yellowstone Park's major geyser basins en route to the legendary Old Faithful geyser. Try this tour for a peek at the Park's 10,000 thermal wonders and impressive wildlife along the trail's riverways (spelling). During the Old Faithful portion of the tour, your tour guide will give you plenty of time to both eat lunch and walk “Geyser Hill” located adjacent to the Old Faithful Geyser. Make sure you leave time for the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center.

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone Tour

Many call this the “waterfall tour” in anticipation of the many waterfalls you'll be passing by. The most spectacular are the Lower Falls with a 308 foot drop. The other falls include the Crystal Falls (129 feet), the Upper Falls (109 feet) and the Gibbon falls (84 feet). Additionally, you'll pass through the Norris Geyser Basin which is the hottest and most acidic basin in the park. Many say it has the look of a desolate moonscape.

Custom Tours

Most snowcoach tour operators in West Yellowstone offer custom or “private tours.” Select this option if you're looking for a one-of-a-kind experience for you and your party. You can design the perfect tour for company outings, wedding parties, family reunions, friendly getaways and more! Be sure to ask your snowcoach tour provider for specific features or scenery you have in mind. Your custom tour can be tailored to meet almost any need.

What to bring on a snowcoach tour

Yellowstone snowcoach tours almost always feature the opportunity to explore the outdoors, so for maximum enjoyment you'll need to stay warm. You are going to want to dress in layers because there will be a vast temperature difference between the coaches and outside. Bring along your most comfortable and warming winter gear, including thermal undergarments or “long-johns,” a hat, gloves, earmuffs, and winter ready footwear. Don't forget your sunglasses for avoiding the light glare from the reflected sun. Snacks, nonalcoholic drinks and binoculars, while optional, are helpful. Since most tours do not provide food or drinks, you'll want to bring your own sack lunches and snacks. The Old Faithful tour is the only tour that offers a food concession stop, but even here we recommend a bagged lunch to save time for more sightseeing. Bring important medications and other must-haves along with you to your snowcoach tour, as once the tour has started it's very difficult and complicated to have to return to the starting point. Additionally, cold temperatures zap camera batteries, so bring extra ones and keep them warm inside your pockets.

When should I visit?

Yellowstone Park's winter season starts around December 15th and ends around March 15th. In December, all interior roads are left to “snow over” in preparation for winter tours. Expect more booked tours the week between Christmas and New Year's, but availability should be more amenable before and after the busy holiday season. January is typically the park's coldest month, and March is its expected warm month – “warm” being a relative term! As with any snowy region, there can be extreme highs and lows in temperatures, but most weather will range between -15 and 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Your snowcoach will be heated, but prepare to dress warmly, and in layers, for the outside portions of the tour.

Where to stay in West Yellowstone for your Snowcoach Tour

When travelling to and from Yellowstone National Park, it's important to stay close for easier transportation. What is a snow coach?

A snowcoach is a snow friendly vehicle that can easily travel along groomed winter roads. Vehicles come in all shapes and sizes, from vans to open sleds, but the key similarity is that the wheels have been replaced with tracks similar to a snowmobile.

Where can I go on a snowcoach tour?

Snowcoach tours are available from the West, South, and North entrances to the park. Snowcoach tours offer a variety of destinations within the park, including Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and Old Faithful. Tours often highlight wildlife, scenic viewpoints, and sometimes offer an activity like cross country skiing or snowshoeing.

One of the best ways to experience Yellowstone in the winter is to take a snowcoach or snowmobile tour into Old Faithful Snow Lodge and spend the night. While you are there, you can take a snowcoach ride to various park destinations, to go cross country skiing, or just explore the area on snowshoes.

When are tours available?

Snowcoach tours are available within Yellowstone National Park between mid December and mid April.

Jh dining guide 2013, snowcoach tours.

Exploring Yellowstone National Park in the winter is truly an amazing experience.  The park is primarily accessible via snowcoach or snowmobile. The majesty of Yellowstone awaits. This is one of the most popular winter activities here in Jackson. With diminished crowds during the winter months, the overall park experience is magnified.

In April 1994, the Greater Yellowstone Coordinating Committee directed that a team from the surrounding forests, parks, and wilderness areas study winter visitor use and associated issues. Through this winter visitor use study agencies gained great insight into visitor and environmental concerns.  A high quality visitor experience is maintained within the park. Resources are protected, the necessary infrastructure and staff are in place to support current levels and types of winter use. The park service regulates the number of snowmobiles and snowcoaches allowed through the various park entrances on a daily basis. The park service also requires outfitters that provide tours to use snowmobiles and snowcoaches the operate with lower emissions, and at quieter noise levels.

Snowcoaches only tour into Yellowstone. There are a number of  snowmobile tour options available which provide wildlife encounters, swimming in hot springs, and/or plenty of off trail riding.

Old Faithful Snowcoach Tour in Yellowstone National Park

Be prepared for an extended day filled with adventure. These guided tours are a unique way to explore any area on snow. These modified vans or tracked machines will carry you over snow through the park. The tour follows the same route as the snowmobile tours. The tours follow the summer roads through the park. After sufficient snowfall the park service grooms these roads for winter use.

Protected from the elements inside the snowcoach, one is left take in the sites and enjoy the ride.

Plan on a long day, starting with 6:30am pickup time and returning roughly 12 hours later. Quite a distance is covered and the experience unsurpassed. Breakfast and lunch will be included in the tour.

Dress in warm layers, don’t forget a camera. I would suggest bringing snacks and extra water.

Snowcoach Tours

A ride through winter's wonderland.

Winter in Yellowstone National Park is altogether surreal. Picture steaming geyser basins and thermal pools juxtaposed with pure white snow. Most of the roads in Yellowstone are closed to vehicular traffic this time of year, which makes it a good time for Nordic skiing , snowshoeing , guided snowmobile tours and snowcoach touring.

Snowcoaches are basically tour buses equipped with oversized tires or tracks ideal for oversnow travel. And with interior upgrades that make them more comfortable than ever before, they're perfect for a wintry—and unforgettable—ride through the park.

Regardless of who you book with, you'll have several amazing winter adventures to choose from. Head to Canyon Village and try Nordic skiing around the rim of the jaw-dropping Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone—featuring a completely frozen 308-foot waterfall. Or, take a tour to Old Faithful Village, where you can explore the diverse thermal features that make up the Upper Geyser Basin before heading back to Mammoth Hot Springs. Make it a long weekend by booking a couple nights at cozy Old Faithful Snow Lodge, which offers two crackling fires for guests to enjoy plus options for additional tours and ski drops that leave directly from the lodge.

As the gateway community with the closest access to Old Faithful Village, West Yellowstone offers the most snowcoach tour booking options. Whether you're headed for Old Faithful or Canyon Village, tours often include lunch and plenty of stops for checking out wildlife—which are often more abundant in the winter months, and certainly easier to spot against the snow! Book a tour at the West Yellowstone office of Yellowstone Vacations, Backcountry

Adventures , See Yellowstone Tours , Yellowstone Alpen Guides or Yellowstone Expeditions .

If you're staying at the park's North Entrance, book a private or group tour with Yellowstone Vacations in Gardiner. Your tour will include lunch and commentary from naturalist guides. Snowcoach tours are also available through Yellowstone National Park Lodges in Mammoth Hot Springs, five miles south of Gardiner inside park boundaries.

It's difficult to predict months in advance what the weather will be in Yellowstone Park in the winter. Enjoy the sights whatever the weather in the comfort of a climate-controlled snowcoach. A knowledgeable guide will stop wherever there's an opportunity to view and photograph wildlife and thermal features. Plus, you will enjoy fun conversations with others in the coach. Snowcoaches have access to more trails than the park-regulated snowmobile trips and offer more frequent tours throughout the day. This is truly a memorable way to see Yellowstone.

LOOKING FOR ANOTHER WAY SEE YELLOWSTONE?

Snowcoach Tours are one of the most popular ways to tour Yellowstone in winter. If that sounds like an appealing way to see West Yellowstone National Park in winter, please also consider one of our Snowcoach Tours!

All snowmobile rentals require pre-payment by a Visa®, MasterCard®, Discover® or American Express® credit card, which will be billed for the full cost of each rental, including tax. Unapproved credit card charges will result in reservation cancellation.

There is a $25 Damage Agreement per day per snowmobile with a $750 deductible. Theft insurance is the responsibility of the renter.

Cancellations must be received no later than 14 days before your scheduled rental to receive a refund. Cancellations or changes received less than 14 days before your arrival, including no-shows, will result in forfeiture of your refund. This cancellation policy is strictly enforced with no exceptions.

All snowmobile tours leave from West Yellowstone, and will meet on-site at the shop you booked through:

  • Bookings made through Yellowstone Vacation Tours meet at 415 Yellowstone Avenue, right next door to the Holiday Inn® West Yellowstone.
  • Bookings made through Two Top Snowmobile meet at 645 Gibbon Avenue, on the corner of Gibbon and Iris.

You will definitely need some durable snowmobile clothing to protect your body from the elements. We have the following equipment available to rent for all riders:

  • Snowmobile boots
  • Snowmobile suit

A DOT-approved helmet is included with your rental.

Winter clothing can be reserved when you call to book your tour, and you will then be sized on-site when you arrive. With the winter gear mentioned, most riders will be comfortable enough wearing jeans, a long sleeve shirt and thermal underwear. If you’d like to dress warmer you are certainly welcome to, but we suggest dressing in layers so you can better regulate your own personal temperature.

All of our snowmobiles are automatics, so you don’t need to worry about shifting gears or doing anything crazy. Before your tour departs, your guide will give you a full orientation on how each of the simple controls work, as well as what to expect while riding in town and inside the park.

Just follow your guide’s lead. When you ride through Yellowstone National Park, all snowmobile riders must stay single file. That way, your guide is leading the “train,” always in front. If the guide slows down or stops, just do what they do and listen for their instruction.

There are three items that we recommend all snowmobile riders purchase or bring with you prior to meeting up for your tour; some warm ski gloves, a balaclava, and a boxed lunch.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own ski gloves. We do have a few loaner pairs available, but sizes and availability are not guaranteed.

Balaclavas are those ninja mask-style head gear that you may have seen before, and will provide some much-appreciated warmth to the one area of your body that will otherwise be left partially exposed — your face! We sell balaclavas on-site at Yellowstone Vacation Tours if you don’t have your own.

Additionally, food service inside the park is extremely limited during the winter months, and since this is a full day tour, you would do well to purchase a boxed lunch before you head out. Boxed lunches can be reserved directly through Yellowstone Vacation Tours when you call in to book your tour, but must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance so they can be ready for pick-up on the morning of your tour.

A backpack might be a good idea, especially if you are purchasing the recommended boxed lunches. A limited number of backpacks are available on-site, or you are welcome to bring your own. Wool socks are also a good investment for outdoor winter activities. You will also need a Park Pass for your Snowmobile Tour (one pass per snowmobile).
