Does the Yeti Rambler Deserve All the Love It Gets?

Consumer Reports tested this insanely popular travel mug to see if it lives up to the hype

Yeti Rambler travel mug in black and silver

It feels like there are only two kinds of coffee drinkers left in America: Those who love their Yeti Ramblers, and those who are tired of hearing about how much people love their Yeti Ramblers. Something about this travel mug seems to transform even the most casual users into instant brand ambassadors.

In fact, the mug is such a hit that it now accounts for about two-thirds of Yeti’s sales, far surpassing its sales of premium coolers—the product that made Yeti a household name.

While there’s no industry data tracking the best-selling travel mugs, it’s clear that Yeti is heading for world domination: “The Yeti Rambler is one of the most widely searched-for mugs online,” says Nish Suvarnakar, CR’s market analyst for the category. It’s also the top-selling tumbler on Amazon, where it has over 91,000 reviews. Yep, that’s three zeros.

The Rambler has 4.8 out of 5 stars on Amazon, with a review section loaded with fawning fans who describe their Ramblers as “incredible,” “worth every penny,” and “the perfect mug for a coffee snob!”

All this begs the question: What, exactly, is so amazing about the Yeti Rambler? To find out, we did what we do best. We tested it. We also tested nine other mugs from brands like Contigo, Starbucks, and Thermos. How did the Rambler stack up against its competitors? Read on to find out. For more on the travel mugs in our tests, see our ratings of insulated travel mugs .

Yeti Rambler Vitals

The Rambler is a hefty-feeling stainless steel mug, sold in about a dozen shapes and in capacities ranging from 10 to 30 ounces, for $12 to $35. We tested the 20-ounce Rambler, which is available in about 20 colors. You can add monogramming, custom words, or logos. The Rambler comes with a five-year warranty. Buy at:   Ace Hardware ,  Amazon ,  Dick’s Sporting Goods ,  Lowe’s ,  Yeti

How the Yeti Rambler Fared in CR's Tests

Temperature Performance Perhaps the boldest claim Yeti makes for the Rambler is that it has vacuum insulation, “to protect your hot or cold beverages at all costs.” When CR’s test engineer Bernie Deitrick filled the Rambler with water heated to the temperature of freshly brewed coffee, he found that the Rambler kept liquids hot for 4½ hours.

“That might be plenty for most users, and enough to earn a rating of Very Good in our test, but it was far from the best,” Deitrick says. “We found eight other mugs that performed better than the Rambler, including a Zojirushi which kept water hot for 13½ hours, which is about three times as long as the Yeti.” Almost 14 hours is probably overkill for most coffee drinkers, and frankly, the 4½ hours you’ll get from the Rambler might be, too, but it’s also clear that the Rambler is far from the front of the pack.

Leaking and Spilling The Rambler isn’t a leakproof mug, but to be fair, it isn’t designed to be. The perimeter of the Rambler’s lid is wrapped with a rubber gasket, and the lid sits snugly atop a lip inside the mug. That precision fit keeps coffee from splashing, say, if you go over a speed bump while driving, and it slows any leaks if the mug is knocked onto its side, giving you the chance to turn the mug right side up before your coffee leaks all over the floor. Its simple magnetic opening mechanism allows you to sip easily, then close the latch.

Yeti makes clear that the Rambler isn’t leakproof, but we think it could fairly be called leak-resistant. For a lot of users, the Rambler’s design probably hits the sweet spot between easy sipping and a basic level of protection against the worst leaks. In our tests we found that things like extra latches, which help make a mug leakproof, also happen to make them a little more annoying to use—after all, it’s a pain to have to press a button or pop a cap up every time you take a sip of coffee.

Everyday Use and Cleaning It’s hard to find a mug that’s skinny enough to fit in a regular car cup holder but still easy to clean by hand. But the Rambler fits that bill.

That’s because it’s skinny where it needs to be. The Rambler’s tapered shape is slimmer at the base and wider at the top; it fit easily into the cup holders of four cars in our test—everything from a Toyota Prius to a Honda Pilot. And it was one of only two mugs that was a cinch to clean by hand—the others required a bottle brush.

The Rambler also has a design with almost no crevices, which limits the places coffee can linger—the mug didn’t hold on to nasty odors, even after we let coffee and cream sit in the mug and lid for 48 hours before washing.

The top of the mug has a rolled lip, so it’s comfortable to drink even without the lid in place. If you ever break or lose the lid, you can buy a replacement from Yeti for $10. And if you happen to lose or break the magnetic latch on the lid, you can buy just that piece for $3. Some manufacturers don’t offer replacement lids, or replacement parts at all, so you’d have to buy a whole new mug if something breaks.

The Bottom Line

To understand what makes the Yeti Rambler so special, you have to understand where other mugs fall short. Too many mugs feel like they’re designed with engineers in mind, not casual coffee drinkers. They’re built to be beautiful, or to keep coffee hot at all costs, often resulting in designs that make the mugs downright annoying to drink from or clean.

In many ways, the Rambler feels like it was custom-made just for you. Every mug makes some trade-off in performance to improve convenience, or vice versa. The Yeti Rambler seems to nail those trade-offs.

It doesn’t keep coffee as hot as most other mugs, but it still keeps it hot for 4½ hours, which is plenty for most commutes. It isn’t leakproof or spillproof, but it’s heavy and sits firmly on a surface, plus it boasts a spill-resistant lid, all of which reduce the likelihood you’ll suffer a serious spill. That lid is also exceptionally easy to clean, not to mention easy to drink from. The 20-ounce Rambler also manages to be slender enough to fit in every cupholder we’ve tried, plus it can be cleaned by hand with a sponge.

Given all that, it’s easy to see why the Yeti Rambler has such devotees. It’s not the mug you’d want to take to the top of Mount Everest, but it could be just what you need for your commute.

YETI Rambler Stainless Steel Mug Review

This popular mug gets points for appearance, but that’s about it

yeti travel mug review

YETI Rambler Stainless Steel Mug

The Spruce Eats / Suzie Dundas

Very durable; can survive tall drops

Modern design and fun color options

Very easy to clean

Only kept coffee hot for an hour

Included lid can’t be fully closed

Doesn’t fit in vehicle cup holders

Very heavy construction

Those who value aesthetics will love the YETI Rambler Stainless Steel Mug. If you’re looking for heat rentention or a spill-proof design, however, you’re bound to be disappointed.

  • Insulation Performance
  • Competition
  • Final Verdict

We purchased the YETI Rambler Stainless Steel Mug so our reviewer could put it to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.

If you enjoy drinking coffee on the go, you’ve probably looked into travel mugs before. There are tons of options on the market, each which claim to keep your drink hot/cold for hours on end—and without spilling. Despite similar promies, few have drawn as much attention as the YETI Rambler Stainless Steel Mug. To determine if the popular travel mug was worth all the hype, we decided to pick one up see how it performed in our day-to-day. Keep reading to see our thoughts on the mug’s design, material, insulation performance, and price.

Design: Modern and appealing, but hard to travel with

At first glance, we really liked the design of the YETI Rambler. It comes in a variety of fun colors—we chose the seafoam green—and has a clean, modern aesthetic. Of the travel mugs we’ve tested, it’s the most similar in shape to a standard coffee mug, though it’s certainly more durable.

The mug comes with a plastic lid with a rubber gasket, ensuring a tight fit. Unfortunately, unlike other YETI mugs (and every other travel mug we’ve owned), there’s no way to fully close the lid. If you want to cover the spout to prevent leaks and spills (whether you accidentally knock it over or hit a pothole on your ride home), you have to pick up a YETI MagSlider Lid . We were a little annoyed to see this was sold separately for additional $10.

A feature of this travel mug we do like is the handle. At 4-inches in diameter, the mug is rather wide, so this helps reduce hand fatigue. The downside of the handle, however, is that it doesn’t fit in a standard car cupholder. This is a major drawback for those who like to bring coffee on their morning commute.

Material: Extremely durable, but too heavy

The YETI Rambler is made of thick-gauge 18/8 stainless steel, which feels very durable. In fact, it held up well in test drops from heights of 15 and 30 feet. Even the lid managed to stay on at 15 feet, which speaks highly of its durability. Of course, the mug hails from YETI—a brand that makes outdoor adventure products, so it’s no surprise that it feels made to last.

It held up well in test drops from heights of 15 and 30 feet.

While the stainless steel’s durability is an obvious plus, it does make the mug quite heavy at 11.2 ounces. We carried it while walking our dog for an hour and we had to keep switching hands to avoid wrist fatigue.

Each mug is sprayed with DuraCoat industrial paint to prevent chipping and scratching. When we accidentally dropped the mug in our paved driveway, we picked it up to find only the faintest of marks. If you know even the tiniest stratch will bother you, though, you may want to opt for the plain stainless steel mug.

Insulation Performance: Not as good as we’d hoped

As much as we wanted to like the YETI Rambler, it way underperformed when it came to temperature retention. To test the YETI’s vacuum insulation, we filled the mug with hot coffee at 8:40 AM then checked in on it throughout the next few hours. At 9:12 AM, the coffee was still quite hot; by 9:47 AM, it was an ideal temperature for drinking without burning our mouth; by 10:10 AM, however, the coffee was barely lukewarm as heat had been escaping through the opening of the lid’s spout the entire time.

As much as we wanted to like the YETI Rambler, it way underperformed when it came to temperature retention.

Unfortunately, due to its steel makeup, this mug can’t be microwaved, so we had no way of reviving the coffee once it went cold. In the small information tag that comes with the mug, YETI claims that “Hot beverages will stay hot for several hours.” Depending on how generous you are with the term “hot,” we’d say it keeps liquids hot for about an hour, and warm for maybe an hour after that.

All in all, we were disappointed with the YETI’s performance—especially considering how reputable the brand is. It is worth noting, however, that some online reviewers said they were able to double the length of heat retentioin by using the compatible MagSlider lid.

Cleaning: Can be cleaned in a matter of seconds

The YETI Rambler is a winner when it comes to cleaning. There are only two parts: the lid and the mug, both of which can be quickly and thoroughly washed in the sink. Better still, the whole thing is dishwasher safe, which makes cleaning a breeze.

Price: Higher than more effective options

Compared to similar options, the YETI Rambler is a bit on the pricey side. The mug retails for roughly $25 and the additional spill-proof lid (it comes with a standard lid) is another $10. Sure, $25 isn’t a ton money, but if you need to spend even more to keep it from leaking, you’re effectively throwing $35 at a mediocre travel mug.

Competition: Better options are out there

Contigo Autoseal West Loop Stainless Steel Travel Mug: If durability is your primary concern when choosing a mug—perhaps you’re an adventure traveler or need something for an upcoming hiking trip—then a mug from YETI is a smart move. But for the average commuter or office worker, the features of the Contigo Autoseal Mug will be much more useful. The YETI Rambler won’t fit in a car cupholder and will spill if knocked over, unlike the Contigo Mug, which has two locking mechanisms that effectively prevent leaks. The Contigo’s vacuum-insulated construction also delivers on heat retention, keeping your coffee piping hot for hours on end.

Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug: The Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug surpasses the YETI Mug in almost every way. It retains the temperature of both hot and cold drinks much better, it fits in standard cupholders, and it can be locked to prevent spills. Considering the Zojirushi costs the same as the YETI, we’d say it’s a no-brainer purchase.

Likely not worth your money.

The YETI Rambler has an appealing design and solid build. But the mug’s flaws—specifically the poor insulation performance and inability to close the lid—mean it’s not the best option for most buyers. Other mugs at a similar (or even lower) price point do a better job of keeping your drink hot/cold for longer.

For many of us, coffee is a constant companion — and that means you'll want a trusty travel mug as you head out the door. Whether you prefer a piping hot cup from your drip coffee maker or single-serve coffeemaker , a refill at Starbucks or a dose of joe from your cold brew coffee maker , your travel coffee mug should handle it all without leaking. Fortunately, there's tons of options out there, including stainless steel coffee thermoses to keep your beverages cool and ones with straws for easy sipping.

Over the years, the pros in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab have tested 45 different travel mugs for hot and cold temperature retention, durability, resistance to leakage, ease of use and more. In our most recent tests, we called in samples of the latest travel mugs and used them both in the office and on our commutes to see how well they held up. We noted how they felt, how they traveled and, unavoidably, how they held up when dropped. Ahead, we rounded up the best travel coffee mugs based on picks that performed well during testing or come from brands that we trust.

Read on for more information on our testing process as well as for tips on what to look for when shopping for a travel coffee mug. For more ideas on what to fill your cup with, check out these coffee recipes to make at home .

Zojirushi's travel mug with a locking lid opens with the push of a button but won't leak or spill (even in a backpack). It will keep hot coffee hot — in fact, the brand is so confident that it offers a five-year warranty on heat retention. Iced coffee fans will appreciate that the mouth is large enough to handle big ice cubes for that extra chill.

Our tester noted that the vacuum-sealed lid keeps water cold all day: "I always grab it from my backpack and think, 'There's no way this could still possibly be cool anymore,' and I'm always pleasantly surprised." We also like the slim design, which is easy to grip and fits nicely into backpacks or totes. It comes in several colors and a 12-ounce version.

This stainless steel mug is a great affordable option, especially considering its large 20-ounce size. What's more, it claims to retain the temperature of your coffee for up to six hours. Online reviewers like that it fits easily into car holders and won't sweat when filled with ice. The tumbler includes two lids: The featured slider lid as well as a flip-style lid , so you can choose which you prefer for the beverage you're drinking. It also comes with a reusable straw and a straw cleaner, though we found the straw was short and inconvenient to use.

Stanley has been in the thermal carafe game since 1913. This travel coffee mug delivers the company's insulated design and also includes a push-button "trigger action" lid that keeps the mug sealed unless pushed. We liked that it means the spout stays closed when you're not hands-on . Our pros did note that it requires some level of strength and dexterity to hold the button while sipping. This mug is available in several colors (even camo!) and in a 20-ounce size.

This 10-ounce travel mug from Avana is perfectly sized for espresso-based drinks, but it's also available in 20-ounce and 30-ounce versions. Kitchen Appliances & Innovation Lab Director Nicole Papantoniou likes that the simple two-piece design is easy to clean because the lid is just one solid piece, unlike many other lids. This is particularly helpful if you like coffee drinks with foam, like latte beverages , that can gunk up lids over time. The contoured mouthpiece makes sipping easy, but it doesn't seal closed, so watch out for leaks. The double-walled insulated construction keeps drinks hot or cold and helps prevent condensation from collecting on the outside.

We love when kitchen gear comes apart for a thorough cleaning, but would rather skip the guesswork that can follow when it's time to reassemble. The OXO travel coffee mug with SimplyClean lid solves this pain point: The four-piece lid is color-coded, numbered and etched with assembly instructions . It's easy to take apart and clean by hand (or in the dishwasher), and simple to put back together for your next cup. Never mind, it's also comfortable to hold. The mug comes in four other colors as well as a 20-ounce size.

Hydro Flask has a huge following when it comes to water bottles — in fact, we named the brand our best stainless steel water bottle — and we're fans of its coffee mugs (called coffee flasks), too . GH Lab tests found that its stainless steel, vacuum-insulated body kept drinks hot and cold for hours, and it was quite leakproof. Hydro Flask also offers a separate wide-mouth lid , which can be handy for cold beverages. (The included lid twists to open and close.) But, be careful drinking hot beverages with a wide mouth as it can spill easily. It's available in a range of colors as well as 16- and 20-ounce sizes , and the little handle helps make it easier to transport.

This SmrtMugg travel mug — rated our best self-heating travel mug — has built-in heat technology to keep coffee hot. Its large battery on the bottom — the manufacturer claims a 10-hour battery life — kept coffee hot (above the target temp of 135˚F) for the full four hours of our Lab tests . Once you get the hang of the controls at the bottom of the mug, the clear digital readout is helpful in setting the temperature and turning off the mug. This travel mug also aced our leak tests. Our tester noted that while the push-button lid is easy to use, the edge of the button can bump your lip while drinking.

This sleek 16-ounce bottle has been redesigned to fit more comfortably in your hand. Though we have not tested this model in the Lab, our pros appreciate that i ts large size and wide mouth can easily fit ice cubes , which makes it a great choice for frequent iced coffee drinkers. We have also found other S'well products to be good at maintaining temperatures. It seals shut and is leakproof; plus, it will keep your drinks cold (or hot!) all day. The S'well comes in a ton of color options as well as 12-ounce and 20-ounce sizes.

This coffee mug from Contigo is super comfortable in your hands, and it has a unique locking feature that makes it leak- and spill-proof. When you want to sip (or chug) your coffee, just press the button to release the seal. During your commute, you can lock the button so you don't accidentally press it while on the go . It's also completely dishwasher-safe, even the lid. One tester did note that with hot beverages, the lid can feel too hot to handle.

This popular Yeti mug looks just like a traditional coffee mug, but it's designed to keep your drinks hot or cold and comes with a lid to prevent unnecessary spills. The sturdy and comfortable handle is large enough for even wide hands. It's available in a dozen different colors as well as sizes from 10- to 30 ounces. Another bonus is that when you buy from the Yeti site, you can customize your product with a short text, a monogram or a logo. Our tester found that the lid slides open easily but noted that it's not leakproof. The brand has also introduced the Rambler Stronghold lid , which screws on (rather than presses in), which we're actively testing in the Lab.

Fellow Carter Everywhere Travel Mug

Carter Everywhere Travel Mug

This little cylinder makes a statement, with testers loving how compact it was. The sleek stainless steel shell contains a ceramic liner intended to keep your coffee free of metallic flavors. The screw top reveals a wide mouth that you can sip from any angle and is large enough for adding ice . It comes in seven additional colors as well as a smaller, 12-ounce size.

W&P Porter Ceramic Mug with Protective Silicone Sleeve

Ceramic Mug with Protective Silicone Sleeve

Papantoniou likes that the inside of this travel mug is easy-to-clean porcelain, which generally helps to prevent buildup over time that can negatively impart flavors . She also noted that it keeps coffee "nice and hot right off the bat." It includes a simple shape and a silicone sleeve for a comfortable non-slip grip. It comes in several colors and a couple of terrazzo prints . It's also available in a 16-ounce size.

Starbucks Classic Green & White Traveler Tumbler Coffee Mug

Classic Green & White Traveler Tumbler Coffee Mug

Starbucks fans will appreciate that they can purchase this mug online rather than solely in the stores. The ceramic mug is easy to use — the lid just pops into place and is surrounded by a rubber seal to help keep it (and the coffee) in place — and easy to clean . "It keeps coffee warm like a standard ceramic mug would, and the lid helps to keep things a little warmer for longer," our tester says. "I like that it's not scalding hot like in a metal mug, so I can enjoy my coffee without burning my mouth." The 12-oz size is perfect for refills of Starbucks tall drinks.

STOJO Collapsible Travel Cup with Straw

Collapsible Travel Cup with Straw

Stojo's collapsible coffee cup makes it possible to travel light while avoiding single-use plastics. The brand impressed our pros with its other collapsible offerings — the Collapsible Bowl won a 2021 Kitchen Gear Award . Similarly, this travel cup is well designed: The cup includes a heat sleeve that provides a structured grip for the squishy silicone cup, and the 16-ounce size includes a straw (which is great for iced coffee or if you prefer to bring your own cup to fountain machines). The collapsed cup is just two inches in size. It's both microwave and dishwasher safe, with 8-ounce , 12-ounce and 24-ounce sizes.

MiiR Flip Traveler

Flip Traveler

With a 4.8-rating on Amazon, this stainless steel thermos comes in a slim design and an easy-to-open lid. Though we have not tested this pick in the Lab, we like its focus on giving back: T he bottom of each travel mug is printed with a "Give Code" that you can enter at Mirr's website for details on the brand's corporate giving , which is funded through every purchase. The Flip Traveler is available in several colors and 12-ounce and 16-ounce sizes .

JOCO Glass Reusable Coffee Cup

Glass Reusable Coffee Cup

This glass bodied Joco mug has a colorful silicone lid and a matching thermal sleeve. It's microwave (and dishwasher!) safe, which makes it a great option if you like to reheat your coffee throughout the day. Since the glass is clear, it's easy to see how much coffee you have left — and hit your preferred shade when you add your creamer. Take note that the lid does not seal shut, so while it might be handy for car commuting, this isn't one that's great for tossing in your bag.

Zoku Instant Iced Coffee Maker

Instant Iced Coffee Maker

For iced coffee fiends, this mug is for you. Get your cuppa in flash: Simply store the inner core of the mug in the freezer, then slip the frozen cup into the protective plastic sleeve and pour in hot coffee. Our tester found that the travel mug will chill your coffee rapidly without watering it down with ice cubes. (The brand actually uses the same concept for its ice cream maker .) Slide in the lid with the provided straw, and you're ready for undiluted iced coffee — though you can add ice if you prefer. One caveat is that the freezable core holds only 11 ounces, which some might find too small.

How we test travel coffee mugs

dog

When the experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab test travel coffee mugs, they use thermocouples to track the temperature of the liquid inside the mug over time. Many of the mugs on this list were tested at home over months (even over commutes) to assess their durability, ease of use and temperature retention.

Our pros also evaluate the mugs for stability, cleanability and comfort of both holding and drinking. They test whether the mug is easy to open and close, and they drop each mug to assess its durability. To test for leaking, our pros roll the mug around on its side as well as turn it upside down and shake it vigorously.

How to find the best travel coffee mug for you

linebreak

✔️ Material : Many travel coffee mugs are stainless steel, though our list also includes porcelain, glass and silicone options. Double-walled construction is common with stainless steel mugs, and that can help keep your beverage hot or cold longer. Other materials may not be insulated. If you opt for a glass mug, consider borosilicate glass, which is tempered to prevent shattering with hot liquids and can be more durable if dropped. Porcelain mugs are generally easy to clean, and because the material is nonporous, the mug is unlikely to develop odd flavors. Silicone is a great lightweight option, but it can get warm if it does not have a heat sleeve.

✔️ Lid : Some lids are more spill-proof than others. Our Lab experts particularly love the locking feature on the Contigo Luxe Autoseal Vacuum-Insulated Travel Coffee Mug , which adds a level of safety if you plan to toss your mug in your bag. Lids that screw on are also often leak-resistant. Those who prefer a more traditional-style mug with a handle may find that slider lids are common; evaluate those for leaking, as some are prone to dribbles (or worse). Note that spill-proof lids often require more care to clean.

✔️ Washability : Check to see if the mug is dishwasher-safe. If it needs to be washed by hand, make sure you can thoroughly clean it with a sponge or bottle brush .

YETI Rambler Review: Pros, Cons, and Verdict On YETI Rambler Mugs

Many people reading this YETI Rambler review may need no introduction to YETI. The YETI brand has gained huge popularity and recognition for their high performance, rugged but stylish drinkware. Whilst the products are designed with adventurous and active lifestyles in mind, their appeal has been far reaching, making them one of the most popular options for insulated coffee mugs on the market. In this article I review the current range of YETI Rambler mugs, including how they stood up to our travel mug tests, our team’s experiences and whether they are worthy of their cult following.

Photograph showing YETI Rambler mugs side by side, 10oz, 14oz, 20oz and 30oz.

YETI Rambler Review Highlights

  • None of the Rambler mugs are designed to be leak proof so these are not an option for throwing into your handbag or backpack.
  • Great performance on insulation tests, kept drinks hot (>120 f) for 3-9 hours depending on size.
  • The 10oz, 14oz and 24oz versions do not fit in car cupholders and are not meant for travel. If you want a YETI travel mug with a handle that is designed for hot drinks, the 20oz and 30oz are the options.
  • Each of the mugs can be taken apart for thorough cleaning and are dishwasher proof.
  • The larger mugs are quite heavy when full so may not work for you to carry around.
  • Overall based on quality, performance and aesthetics I think the mugs are worth their premium price tag if you don’t need a mug that is 100% leak proof. If you need a leak proof YETI for hot drinks you can find out the options in our article on the best YETI for coffee .

The current options if you are looking for a YETI mug with handle:

  • 10oz stackable mug with magslider lid
  • 14oz stackable mug with magslider lid
  • 20oz travel mug with stronghold lid
  • 24oz mug with magslider lid
  • 30oz travel mug with stronghold lid

The Rambler Magslider Lid is an uninsulated plastic lid that comes with some of the YETI Rambler drinkware products to help avoid splashes and spills. The lid is not a screw fit, you press this lid onto the mug or pull it off when you want to remove it. There is a small tab on the rim of the lid to help with removing the lid. The lid has a rubber seal which helps to make it fit snugly onto the mug and prevent leaks. I talk about the leak resistance of the lid later in this article.

Photograph showing the the YETI rambler magslider lid with its slider in the closed position.

The lid has a black slider mechanism that you can easily slide opened and closed to access the drinking spout. The slider is attached to the lid with a magnet, so that it can be quickly removed from the lid for cleaning. One downside is that the magnetic slider can pop off if you drop the lid or the mug so I have had to search along the floor for the slider a few times. I tried a quick test of dropping the lid onto a rubber mat from around a 1ft height. The slider popped off the lid about 25% of the time when it had been in the open position and about 50% of the time when it had been in the closed position.

YETI do sell replacement or additional magsliders, either singly or in a magslider color pack of three if you want to match your slider to your mug color for example. If you really like your magslider lids then you may want to go ahead and get some spare magsliders so the magslider color pack might be a good purchase. I picked up the pack shown below as we have mugs and tumblers in these colors already.

Photograph showing magslider color pack with magslider in 3 colours - white, seafoam and navy

You can also purchase magslider lids separate from the mug itself which is useful if it becomes worn or damaged. Since this type of lid is used on some of the mugs, tumblers and lowballs you may be able to use them interchangeably however be careful as there are 3 different sizes.

Magslider Lid Sizes

  • Small fits the 10oz Wine Tumbler and 10oz Tumbler
  • Medium fits the 10oz Lowball, 10oz Mug, 24oz Mug, 16oz Pint and 20oz Tumbler
  • Large fits the 14oz Mug, 26oz Cup and 30oz Tumbler

The Rambler Stronghold lid is made for travel mugs and fits the 20oz and 30oz travel mug. It is a thick but uninsulated plastic lid very similar to the magslider lid but is a screw on lid and its magnetic slider opening works a little differently. On this lid you have to press down on the slider before you can slide it open or closed. You quickly get used to this movement however it may be a little difficult for anyone with hand weakness. The lid has some grooves on the edge to help grip when screwing the lid on or off the mug.

The stronghold lid is designed to provide better leak resistance than the magslider lid. It is also designed to enable more thorough cleaning. The rubber seal on this lid is more easily removed and both parts of the magnetic slider mechanism are fully removable for cleaning .

Photograph showing the YETI rambler stronghold lid with its slider in closed position.

I repeated the testing I had done with the magslider lid, dropping the lid onto a rubber mat. This time the slider very occasionally popped off when it had been in the closed position. The slider still came apart about 20% of the time when the slider had been in the open position.

YETI do not yet sell replacements or additional colors of the slider for the Stronghold lid. You can purchase complete Stronghold lids, there are separate sizes for the 20oz and 30oz travel mugs. This isn’t really ideal; one of the team did loose the top part of the slider on their travel mug and the only solution was to replace the entire lid. Check out our thoughts on the YETI warranty as well.

What We Like

What we don't like.

  • Size works well for smaller coffees at home as it will keep them warmer for longer than the larger 14oz mug.
  • Expensive for a mug to use at home, but worth it if keeping your coffee hot for longer is important.

The YETI Rambler 10oz mug is intended to be used at home in place of a traditional ceramic or glass mug if you want to keep your coffee hotter for longer. This is really useful for example in the mornings when I’m busy serving breakfasts, packing kids lunches etc as it means I’m not left with a cup of cold coffee after 30 minutes. I find it just the right size for that first cup of coffee in the morning as well as for when I make a Latte or Cappuccino with my bean to cup machine as those are about 8oz. It obviously doesn’t provide the same beautiful presentation of a latte in a glass mug but sometimes it will be more important for me to keep the drink warm. The other downside to insulated mugs is that the mug itself will not become warm to touch, so you may miss that comfort. You can read more on how the 10oz Rambler mug performs vs ceramic and glass mugs in my review of the best coffee mugs for home .

The 10oz YETI Rambler comes with a magslider lid. Like all of the other Rambler mugs it is not leakproof but the lid works well to prevent splashes when you’re walking around with the mug. It keeps coffee hot for hours and if you usually drink coffees under 10oz then this will give the best performance. If for example you used the 14oz Rambler mug for a smaller coffee it will not keep it hot for as long as the 10oz.

Read below for lots more info on the Rambler mug range including details on performance and full spec of the mug.

  • Versatile with multiple uses.
  • Good size for coffee at home if you don’t want to refill too often.
  • Wide base makes this super stable.
  • Only stackable without the lid.

YETI markets the Rambler 14oz as a versatile camp mug that you can reach to for serving your soup and ice cream as well as your hot or cold beverages. The bowl-like width lends itself well to these alternative uses and whether using this at home or on a trip there is something comforting about eating soup from a mug! My kids have also enjoyed eating breakfast cereal from this mug and its wide base means it is really sturdy and not easily knocked over. Its also a good option for taking hot food to the office though bear in mind it is not leakproof.

The width of Rambler 14oz mug means that its insulation performance isn’t as good as the other mugs in the range, but for a mug thats intended for use at home or camp it is more than adequate . See how it performed in the hot and cold drink tests with other YETI Rambler mugs. I’ve also compared it to other coffee mugs for home , where as expected it was much better at holding heat than ceramic or glass mugs.

The stackable feature of this mug could come in useful for households where you may have more than one mug, however we were disappointed that these are only stackable with the lid removed which creates other issues with storage and lids going missing.

The 14oz mug comes with a magslider lid . I’ve described the difference between the magslider and stronghold lids here but I really felt there was no big disadvantage with the magslider lid on this mug.

photograph showing the yeti rambler 20oz mug front profile in charcoal colour.

  • Keeps drinks hot or cold for a long time.
  • Size works well for most scenarios outside the home.
  • Easy deep cleaning help prevents mould.
  • Handle is a little small, not comfortable for larger hands.
  • Slow flow through the lid opening.

The YETI 20oz mug is designed for use as a travel mug. Its narrow base should fit in most car cup holders and its handle, lid and drinking slot make it ideal for sipping when on the road. It performs really well at keeping coffee hot and is equally as good at keeping drinks cool. A few of the team commute to work and they have really liked this as an option to use in the car and then take along into the office to finish off drinking through the morning. They did find though that the handle feels a bit small for larger hands. My brother in law found himself holding the mug around the base without the handle, so he would have preferred a tumbler over this or the 30oz Rambler with larger handle.

The main weakness of this travel mug is not being leak proof . There are other travel mugs on the market that will perform as well but also provide 100% leak resistance. The YETI travel mug does win on cleaning , its stronghold lid can be fully disassembled for deep cleaning. A lot of other travel mugs have problematic cleaning which lead to mould developing in the lids.

The stronghold lid twists or screws onto the mug with a 90 degree turn and I found that you might have to try placing it a few times to get the drinking slot in the right position for you to drink comfortably. It does however work well for left and right handed users as you can position the drinking slot where needed. The drinking slot on the 20oz mug also seemed a little smaller than on the other mugs and this made the flow of coffee a bit slow for some of us.

Read below for lots more details including how long the 20oz Rambler mug kept coffee hot for.

photograph showing the yeti rambler 20oz mug front profile in seafoam color.

  • Large size and heat retention worked well when away from home all day.
  • Quite heavy when full, difficult to carry around.
  • Top heavy, more easily knocked over than others.

The 30oz Rambler mug is the largest coffee mug in the YETI range and one of the largest coffee mugs I have used. For alot of people this will be too large for coffee but it will work well if you drink coffee all through the day or are going on a long drive and don’t want to have to refill. If you prefer to have a handle then you might also choose this instead of a tumbler for your cold drinks. The size allows you to fit lots of ice with your drink if you like to drink it icy cold. As with the other Rambler mugs, the 30oz is really good and keeping drinks hot or cold for hours, which is especially important for this size where you will likely be drinking over a longer period of time.

The 30oz YETI mug does fit in most car cup holders due to its narrow tapered base. I did find though this narrow base makes the mug top heavy and it was more easily knocked over than other mugs which has led to a few spills. Do also think about weight as this mug weighs 3.5lbs when its full!

YETI coffee mugs kept coffee hot (>120°F) for up to 9 hours in our testing.

YETI don’t publish any specific insulation capabilities for their mugs, so I ran some tests to see how the mugs perform for keeping drinks hot or cold. There isn’t a single answer to the question though as there are many variables that affect the results and everyone may have different requirements. I’ve tried to capture some data for you to make an informed decision on whether the YETI Rambler mug is right for you.

I performed 3 different tests to confirm whether or not YETI mugs do keep coffee hot.

During each of these tests the mug was filled to capacity for the duration of the test. Insulated cups perform best when they are full, so you can view these as best case results. If the cup were less full, or as you drink from the cup, the performance would degrade a little.

At the start of each of these tests the temperature of the coffee was 180°F/82°C. The recommended brew temperature for coffee is around 200°F, resulting in typical poured temperature of around 180°F.

With the exception of the second test, the mugs had their lids on and slider closed for the duration of the tests (slider was quickly opened and closed for temperature testing only during the test).

The table below includes a summary of the testing, as you can see the results were pretty good and the mugs likely perform well enough for most people’s needs. The 14oz mug has a wider structure which results in heat being lost more quickly. The 30oz mug results are a little better than the 20oz and this is likely due to the larger volume of liquid rather than the mug actually performing any better.

I’ve included some photographs below to give an understanding and visibility of how the tests were performed.

YETI mugs kept drinks cold for up to 16 hours in my testing.

I performed 2 tests to see how well the mugs keep drinks cold.

Per the hot drink tests, during each of the tests the mug was filled to capacity for the duration of the test. Insulated cups perform best when they are full, so you can view these as best case results. If the cup were less full, or as you drink from the cup, the performance would degrade somewhat.

The mugs had their lids on and slider closed for the duration of the tests (slider was quickly opened and closed for temperature testing only during the test).

In the first test, we tested how long the mug could keep water cold at an ambient room temperature of 72°F/22°C. The water temperature at the start of the test was 61°F, this is thought to be an optimal temperature for hydration. We measured how long the water stayed below 72°F, which is at the top end of the scale for comfortable water drinking temperature.

The table below shows a summary of the results, with each mug performing well in this test.

In the second cold drink test I wanted to see how the mugs would perform at keeping drinks cold in hotter climates and used a temperature of 95°F/35°C. We started with the water a bit cooler for this test, at 51°F and tested the water temperature after 12 hours. As you see from the results below the outside temperature had a clear impact on the ability to keep the water cold when compared to the first tests.

YETI describe their Rambler Mugs with magslider lid as splash proof and Rambler Mugs with a stronghold lid as leak resistant but not leakproof. YETI recommend other products in their range if you want a 100% leakproof option.

I tested whether the mugs were spill proof and how leak resistant they were. I looked at whether the mug would spill when shaken upright, mimicking a car ride or walking with the mug. I also checked whether the mug would spill when knocked over as can happen from time to time.

I found no difference between the mugs I tested regardless of whether they had a magslider or stronghold lid. Each of the mugs leaked a little when tipped upside down or knocked over.

YETI offer a limited 5 year warranty on their Rambler products. The YETI mug warranty applies to products purchased directly from YETI or from one of their approved distributors and covers product defects. The warranty does not cover normal wear and term such as scratches, dents or punctures. This can be a little subjective however from what I’ve experienced and read claims under warranty have been overall positive.

Whilst our team have found YETI products to be high quality, they have encountered a few issues and made some successful claims under the warranty. In one instance a new 20oz mug didn’t seem to hold heat as expected and was replaced as defective. To claim against the warranty you have to complete an online form providing details of the issue and some photographs for review.

In our experience claims have been reviewed and approved within a couple of days. I have read reviews of claims being disputed and additional photographs being requested. It appears in most cases where there was a reasonable claim it was approved though sometimes only after escalation.

There have also been some YETI product recalls over the years but at present there aren’t any active recalls for Rambler products.

Other FAQs.

What are yeti mugs made of.

The body of the Rambler mugs are made from 18/8 stainless steel. 18/8 refers to the percentage of chromium and nickel in the steel. This is one of the most common food grade stainless steels; no chemicals can leak from the material into your drink. 18/8 stainless steel is strong and rust resistant.

The lids of the Rambler mugs are made from BPA free plastics. YETI state that all of the products and  accessories are BPA free so this means that the lid itself, the slider and the rubber gasket/seal are all BPA free. Inside of the lid sliders there are also metal magnets.

How are YETI Mugs Insulated?

YETI mugs use a very common double wall vacuum insulation technology. In simple terms there are two layers of steel with a vacuum sealed cavity between. This construction protects the liquid from the outside temperature helping to keep your drinks hot or cold.

Are YETI Mugs Dishwasher Safe?

YETI Rambler Mugs are suitable for the dishwasher. So far in our ongoing use we haven’t encountered any issues with washing our mugs in the dishwasher. We have been following YETI’s instructions to place the body on the rack, and lid in the top away from heat (at least when the mums are loading the dishwasher).

Are YETI Mugs Microwave Safe?

Since the YETI Rambler mugs are made of stainless steel they are not microwave safe. As with other metals it would create a fire hazard if you were to heat a YETI mug in the microwave. You will need to heat your liquid in a microwave proof container before decanting to your YETI mug.

How Long Does a YETI Last?

Unsurprisingly this is not an easy answer as it will come down to how often you use it and how careful you are with it. We have quite a few YETI products across the team and we’ve found them to be very good quality. Some have developed a few scratches and dents and slight peeling on the paint coating however those issues are much fewer than with some other brands. I’ve read alot of reviews of the Rambler mugs to find out if we have just been lucky but the consensus seems to be mostly positive.

I think the most easily damaged part of the Rambler Mugs is the plastic lid. I tried a  few drop tests with some brand new mugs. I dropped the mugs from around 4ft onto my concrete driveway. With one of the mugs, on the first drop the lid suffered some scuffing which I have also seen on our other YETIs which we’ve had for a few years. I included a photograph below, hopefully you can see the scuffing at the front of the picture on the lid rim.

None of the mug bodies picked up any damage during those specific drops. I think there will always be an element of good or bad luck on how something like this hits the surface.

Photograph showing scuff mark damage to YETI Rambler mug lid

When Does YETI Release New Colors?

YETI usually release some limited edition colors every season like the cosmic lilac color I pictured the 10oz mug in. As well as seasonal colors they sometimes release additional limited editions to mark events and occasionally change the permanent color lineup.

How To Clean A YETI Mug

As mentioned above YETI mugs are dishwasher safe, so I usually either give a quick hand wash or go ahead and put through a dishwasher cycle. I do like to deep clean all of my cups every so often to prevent any potential mould or dirt buildup. With YETI mugs, the deep clean focuses around the lid.

With the magslider lid, the slider and rubber gasket can be removed. With the stronghold lid, the magnetic holder below the slider can also be removed which allows for a slightly more thorough clean. Once taken apart I use a toothbrush with soap and hot water to gently scrub the pieces before drying and replacing. Its important to make sure the pieces are dry before reassembling otherwise you might encourage mould to grow.

YETI provide these instructions for disassembly and reassembly of the stronghold lid.

Photograph showing how to disassemble and reassemble stronghold lid for cleaning.

How To Remove Coffee Stains From YETI Mug

The easiest option is to add a couple of spoons of bicarb or baking soda (barkeepers friend also works well) to the cup with a few drops of water to form a paste. Then scrub around the inside of the cup with the paste and a scratch free scrubber before rinsing with hot water and soap. This will leave your mug looking like new!

I Used The YETI Coffee Mug For A Year — & This Is My Unfiltered Review

We only recommend products we love and that we think you will, too. We may receive a portion of sales from products purchased from this article, which was written by our Commerce team.

The YETI 10-ounce mug is my go-to everyday mug

I used to love the ritual of getting my daily dose of caffeine from a coffee shop, but when the pandemic hit, I decided to bring the whole operation in-house. Espresso maker, milk frother, coffee bean grinder , French press. And yet, it wasn’t until I got a YETI coffee mug that my setup truly reached the zenith. It’s not an overstatement when I say that it’s completely changed my coffee drinking experience. So what makes the YETI Rambler coffee mug so worth the price tag? Here’s my in-depth, unfiltered review — and yes, it covers a range of different mug sizes and styles from the Rambler line because my YETI obsession (and growing collection) has no bounds.

  • YETI Rambler Stackable Mug (10 Ounce), $25, Amazon

Is The YETI Coffee Mug Worth It?

The answer to that question is a resounding yes, and it should be noted that I’m not usually the kind of person to shell out top-dollar simply for a name or label. The YETI Rambler 10-ounce mug was my first foray into the world of double-wall vacuum insulation, and it immediately proved that I’d been drinking coffee wrong this whole time. With the YETI, my coffee stays hot for hours on end, completely eradicating the need to reheat. And I’ve put that insulation to the test: I’ve left a full mug in my car for over an hour — in Wisconsin winter temperatures — and come back to enjoy still-warm sips. (That said, if you’re looking for a mug with the absolute most heat-retention on the planet, I’d probably recommend the Zojirushi — which my partner has and swears by — but in my opinion, it keeps liquids almost too hot and I burn my mouth.)

The Yeti Rambler 10-Ounce Mug

Yeti Rambler Stackable Mug With MagSlider Lid (10 Oz.)

Why Is YETI So Popular?

This YETI Rambler mug feels substantial in your hand and comes with a nice handle. (Regardless of the latest mug designs out there, I still crave a handle for slow sipping and general ruminating while I work.) I also appreciate that the MagSlider lid makes it easy to carry without any splashing or spillage when I’m on the move. However, it’s important to note that the size of the mug isn’t compatible with cup holders. I considered buying a nifty cup holder expander designed to accommodate the Rambler, but I ultimately decided to just spring for the Yeti Rambler 20-ounce tumbler for travel (but more on that later).

In terms of cleanup, there’s no fuss. I just pop it into the dishwasher, and that fact alone is why this mug is my go-to over other brands that might have an aesthetic leg up. (I love the look and feel of my Fellow Carter Everywhere mug but, real talk, it tends to sit unwashed in my sink because I’m too lazy to keep up with the hand-wash instructions.) In contrast, the YETI has endured literally hundreds of spins through the dishwasher to date and is holding up beautifully. The rubber gasket around the lid (which is designed to keep the lid firmly in place) is going strong, and there are barely any chips to the pretty powder coating around the cup.

yeti travel mug review

I will say that the only place where the YETI falls short is in its leakproof-ness. While its sturdy, stainless steel construction makes it less likely to tip over in the first place, there will be some leakage if you happen to drop or knock it. I have a small coffee stain on my living room rug to prove it. (If you’re in need of complete coverage, and don’t mind a little hand washing, I would recommend the aforementioned Fellow Carter mug because of the twist-lock lid.)

If you’re liking the sound of the YETI 10-ounce mug but need a larger capacity, there’s a Rambler waiting for you. The large, né giant, 14-ounce size is perfect for when you need a serious amount of caffeine to see you through.

The YETI Rambler 14-Ounce Mug

YETI Rambler Mug With MagSlider Lid (14 Oz.)

I keep this lumberjack size in my arsenal for when I want extra-frothy lattes because it can accommodate the foamy milk without overflowing. The downsides to this mug behemoth? It is heavy and a bit cumbersome to drink out, and again, definitely not cup-holder-approved.

Of course, no YETI review would be complete without talking about the brand’s most beloved mug around: the YETI Rambler 20-ounce Tumbler . Many people find that this is their go-to mug, period — just look at that near-perfect Amazon star rating it has after more than 25,000 reviews.

  • YETI Rambler Tumbler (20 Ounce), $30, Amazon

For me personally, since the Rambler Tumbler doesn’t have a handle, I tend to use this one exclusively for taking coffee on the road. It effortlessly fits into my cup holder and the MagSlider lid keeps coffee in place over speed bumps or patchy roads. It has all the same features I love about the 10-ounce stackable mug (dishwasher-safe, durable coating, great heat retention), but in a car-friendly package. To quote my partner, who steals this mug from me for his own travels, this mug is “essential” for long drives.

The Yeti Rambler 20-Ounce Tumbler

YETI Rambler Tumbler (20 Oz.)

By this point, my family loyalty to YETI is probably abundantly clear, but, as one more example of how YETI converts skeptics into loyalists, I present: my dad. This man is the opposite of a coffee snob, routinely drinking ground Folgers without complaint. I gave him the YETI 10-ounce mug for Christmas and now he takes it with him everywhere. When I asked him what he likes about it, he said, “It’s simple. It keeps your coffee hot. Like a Thermos but in a mug.” It’s the best gift I’ve ever given him. Solidifying favorite-child status? Maybe.

PROS AND CONS - Our Key Takeaways

At a glance:.

Without a doubt, the first thing that struck me was the overall appearance of the Rambler. I'm a sucker for vibrant colours and the Seafoam version reminds me of the colour of the sea off the Harris coastline. From an aesthetics point of view, the Yeti Rambler looks fantastic and this is further enforced by the feel of the mug - it's solid and feels good in your hand. I'm really looking forward to trialling the Rambler and also to see if it lives up to it's hype but my first impressions are extremely positive!

Under The Microscope - putting the Yeti Rambler Travel Mug through it's paces.

In order to give the Yeti Travel Mug a thorough testing, we made a cup of tea to go and headed out to Loch Tummel to see how long our brew stayed hot.

We put the Yeti Rambler through our rigorous testing criteria to evaluate it's overall performance and functionality, design and construction, our own user experience and value for money and overall, the Yeti Rambler excelled on the Design and Construction criteria, gaining a 5 out of 5 but we only gave a 3 on Value for Money giving them a 4 out of 5 fireside rating.

We ranked 3 on Value for Money as there are a multitude of similar travel mugs on the market that do pretty much the same thing as the Yeti Rambler but with a much lower price point. What redeemed the Yeti, in our eyes, was the superior build and feel of the travel mug that is lacking with most of it's competitors.

Under the Microscope - Our Testing Criteria

Performance and functionality 🔥🔥🔥🔥.

We popped some tea into the Yeti Rambler and headed up to the shores of Loch Tummel - a good 2 hr 30 min drive away to see how well the travel mug fared at keeping our brew piping hot with it's vacuum insulation wall. After a good 3 hours, the tea was as hot as when we first poured it and even an hour later, was still hot enough to enjoy.

The Yeti Rambler is not spill or leak-proof so avoid lying it on it's side for prolonged periods but upright, the Stronghold™ Lid does an excellent job of keeping your tea where it's supposed to be when driving. The fact that despite it's larger base, it will fit in most cup holders from cars to camping chairs.

Yeti Rambler Travel Mug in Seafoam

Design and Construction 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

The design of the Yeti Rambler is outstanding. Quite simply it looks and feels fantastic. It fits extremely well in your hands and has a heavy, satisfying weight to it that is immensely appealing. The base of the mug is wider than most, which means the mug is less inclined to tip over. The handle works well for both lefties and right handed users and the lid rotates to accommodate various placement options to suit you.

The travel mug is constructed from 18/8 stainless steel, a set of metal alloys that are resistant to corrosion and combined with their DuraCoat™ tech, the colour and finish of the mug will resist fading and peeling. It's a mug that's as stylish as it is rugged but with one small flaw with the lid.

User Experience 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Using the Yeti Rambler was not as straightforward as I assumed it would be! Firstly, I struggled to open the Stronghold™ lid which had me wondering whether this thing was so air-tight that I was never going to get in! Once opened, it did rotate easily to the various placement options for either left-handed or right-handed users but it wasn't as smooth as I had envisaged.

The dual slider took a bit of getting used to but once conquered, seemed to work very well and kept my tea from sloshing around and spilling. The major issue I had with the lid was how difficult it seemed to drink from it. Maybe I'm not seasoned enough to know the correct way to do this, but I found that my tea came rushing out all at once and ended up mostly down my jumper.

Yeti Rambler Stronghold™ Lid with Dual Slider

The feel and look of the travel mug are outstanding and it felt lovely having a cup of tea from my Yeti mug sitting on the shores of Loch Tummel but it was dampened somewhat by my inability to drink properly from the mug.

Comparison 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Compared to other vacuum insulated travel mugs, the Yeti Rambler stands head and shoulders above the competition with it's instantly recognisable iconic design and colours. It's superior rugged construction gives excellent performance but it's higher price point will be a deterrent for budget-conscious buyers. It's worth weighing up the price versus Yeti's strong brand reputation to see if it's the right fit for you.

Value for Money 🔥🔥🔥

The Yeti Rambler is an expensive piece of kit. For a travel mug used on your daily commute, it seems an excessive price point due to the few flaws it has. However, from the point of view of durability, excellent design and appearance, then the Yeti Rambler is worth the investment.

Got some questions about the Yeti Rambler Travel Mug? We've got you covered! Check out these frequently asked questions for valuable insights, tips, and practical information to help you make the most of travel mug.

How long does the Yeti Rambler Travel Mug keep drinks hot or cold?

Yeti state that the Rambler will keep cold drinks cold for 24 hrs and hot drinks hot for up to 6 hours. We found that the Rambler kept our tea piping hot for just shy of 4 hours and then it became luke-warm at 5-6 hours.

Is the Seafoam finish durable?

Yeti use a DuraCoat™ finish on all their mugs which protects against colour fading or any scuffing or scratching on the outer layer giving extended durability to the mug.

Is the Stronghold ™ Lid spill-proof?

The Stronghold™ lid is leak-resistant but not spill or leak-proof. If the travel mug is laid on it's side for extended periods of time or chucked in your bag for your daily commute, there will be some spillage.

Our Final Verdict on the YETI RAMBLER 20oz TRAVEL MUG: 🔥🔥🔥🔥

I will definitely be keeping my Yeti Rambler travel mug but I don't know if I would necessarily buy the same model again.

The Seafoam Rambler looks incredible and you are instantly drawn to it's pleasing shape and design and the solid, comfortable feel of the mug but it does have it's drawbacks. I'm not particularly bothered with how long it will keep my tea hot as I don't want to drink a cup of tea that's been stewing for over 6 hours so the fact that it stays hot for a good, few hours, is more than sufficient for me. What bothers me more is the trouble I have drinking from the lid without it spilling all over me, especially when I'm driving on the motorway. I also struggled to take the lid off and found it quite sticky which irked considering it's price tag.

It will definitely be accompanying me on my morning commute and will be a welcome member of my gear collection but if I'm honest, I think this may have more to do with its rugged construction and stand out design and colour more than anything else!

Why I’m Stocking Up on These Perfect Insulated Travel Mugs

Increasingly, all-inclusive resorts are banning styrofoam cups, and travelers are instead bringing their own insulated tumblers. but whether or not you’re resort-bound, it’s worth packing these useful items for your next trip..

Why I’m Stocking Up on These Perfect Insulated Travel Mugs

Yeti Rambler tumblers come in all shapes and sizes, including a wineglass version.

First it was plastic bags ; then it was straws and then water bottles . Now, single-use polystyrene (better known by the trademarked term for a similar product “Styrofoam”) drink cups are disappearing around the world—and my Yeti tumblers and I couldn’t be happier about it.

Resorts are banning single-use cups

Insulated tumblers have been appearing on lists of what to pack for an all-inclusive vacation for a few years now. Not only is a good travel mug better for the environment, since you won’t need new disposable cup for every new cocktail, but it’ll keep your rum punch colder longer and your ice won’t melt in the time it takes to get from the bar to your beach chair. And while most resorts offer six- or 10-ounce cups, if you bring your own, you can opt for a pint-sized tumbler.

But now, what used to be a suggested item has become a ubiquitous one. Popular resort destinations are moving to ban single-use plastics and polystrenes altogether. Mexico, for example, passed an extensive ban on single-use items in May 2019. Rodrigo Esponda, managing director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board, notes that many hotels and resorts in Mexico began eliminating single-use plastics before that. “Sheraton implemented reusable bottles at check-in a while ago, and throughout the resort, there are refilling stations,” he says. “The destination has a long history of protecting the environment. Forty-two percent of the region is a natural protected area, so the culture of environmental protection has been there for many years.”

A branded bottle or mug can be a nice memento of your vacation—and it’s a great perk for those who haven’t hopped on the reusable bottle bandwagon—but to have more control over your drinkware quality and features, I recommend investing in and bringing your own insulated tumbler, especially if you’re a frequent traveler. But which one should you opt for? I’m glad you asked.

Just as nature abhors a vacuum, I abhor a room-temperature drink. I want my hot drinks hot and my cold drinks cold, so I’ve been building an extensive collection of insulated water bottles and mugs: I have insulated, stainless-steel Kleen Kanteen water bottles, S’Well bottles in wild designs, and Hydro Flasks in all different sizes and shapes. But I’m obsessed with Yeti’s Rambler tumblers. Here’s why:

Yeti Ramblers have excellent insulation

My Yeti Rambler 20-ounce Tumbler comes with me on most trips. In fact, it accompanies me almost everywhere I go. The superior double-wall vacuum insulation can keep my morning tea hot from 8 a.m. all the way through lunch time. And as for cold water? I’ve left ice in my Rambler overnight and woken up to ice cubes the next morning. AFAR contributor Kelly Bastone has successfully transported ice cream in the 36-ounce Rambler .

The Yeti Rambler line now comes with a MagSlider lid, which is made with BPA-free plastic. The lid is designed to reduce minor splashes, but the clever, sliding magnetic cover also keeps some heat from entering or exiting through the tumbler’s opening. And even though Yeti is very clear that the lid is not designed to be leakproof, I’ve had it turn over in my bag many times without losing a single drop of its contents.

Yeti Ramblers are extremely durable

As mentioned, my Yeti Rambler comes with me everywhere and has for over a year now. It’s been knocked over and dropped more times than I can count, but there’s not a dent on it. It looks as new as it did when I bought it. The grippy DuraCoat exterior just doesn’t scratch. Better still? The kitchen-grade stainless steel vessel is dishwasher safe.

Yeti Ramblers come in nearly any size you need

The 20-ounce tumbler is the most versatile of the Yeti Rambler line. At 6⅞ inches tall and 3.5 inches wide at the top, it’s big enough to hold a large latte from your favorite airport coffee shop on your morning flight and it will keep an afternoon pint of beer cold. It fits in most cup holders and backpack pockets, so you can bring it along filled with ice water for a road trip or a day hike. It is a bit heavier than most water bottles and not officially leakproof, so I wouldn’t recommend relying on it for long or multi-day hikes, but if you can only pack one vessel for a trip, this one can do many jobs.

Sometimes less is more when it comes to drinkware, and that’s where the Yeti Rambler 10-ounce Wine Tumbler comes in. Perhaps you don’t want to tote 20 ounces of wine on your evening beach walk. Perhaps you’d prefer to drink your lowball cocktail in cup more fitted for such a drink. The Yeti Rambler wine tumbler has all the same durability and insulation of the 20-ounce tumbler, but it’s the size and shape of an extremely comfortable stemless wineglass. Seriously, it’s fun to cradle in your hands. The 4.5-inch tall, 3.5-inch wide cup also comes with the MagSlider lid, keeping your pinot grigio cool and your pinot noir from sloshing out. This one comes with me on every camping trip for campfire cocktails, on every boozy picnic, and filled with wine for every spontaneous sunset viewing.

Yes, the Yeti Wine Tumbler was made for vino, but it’s also the perfect size for a cocktail or a bourbon on the rocks.

Yes, the Yeti Wine Tumbler was made for vino, but it’s also the perfect size for a cocktail or a bourbon on the rocks.

I have a deep, deep love for these two Yeti travel mugs—and if I were packing for an all-inclusive, these are the two I’d bring—but I’d be selling the Rambler line short if I didn’t mention that there are 14 other pieces of drinkware in the family: short, handled mugs, rugged gallon jugs, and more. There’s really a vessel for every occasion; it’s all about what you like and how much space you have in your suitcase.

A note on drinkware rivalry

Water bottle aficionados can be an obsessive bunch. As much as I love my Yetis, others out there love their S’Wells, their Siggs, and their Hydro Flasks more. Hydro Flask in particular is Yeti’s friendliest rival. The two brands are at the top of the game and neck-and-neck in terms of quality, insulation, and variety. At some point it comes down to personal preference. I find the insulation in my Yetis better, but I tote my water for active adventures in a 32-ounce Hydro Flask with its swinging handle. Gear writer Bastone prefers the lip on the Hydro Flask tumbler lids to that on the Yeti tumbler lids.

Prefer Hydro Flask yourself? The brand offers a 20-ounce tumbler. Hydro Flask’s lidded wine tumbler is also 10 ounces, and it doesn’t bell out quite as much as the Yeti wine tumbler; think white wineglass versus red wineglass.

Buy now: Hydro Flask 20-Ounce Tumbler, $28, hydroflask.com ; Hydro Flask 10-Ounce Wine Tumbler, $30, hydroflask.com

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter whether it’s a Yeti, a Hydro Flask, or some less-known brand holding your sundowner cocktail. And it doesn’t matter how many more resorts ban single-use cups. With the wealth of reusable options out there, you can be beverage-ready wherever you go.

Yeti Rambler 20 oz Review: A Great Travel Mug

Yeti Rambler 20 oz Review: A Great Travel Mug

While the market is full of vacuum-insulated vessels, the YETI Rambler 20 oz offers standout properties that set it apart from the rest.

YETI is best known for its coolers. As you can see, the company calls Rambler Tumblers “personal drink coolers.” Made from an 18/8 stainless steel with vacuum-insulated walls, the YETI Rambler 20 oz regulates ambient liquid temperatures inside. The lid is made from BPA-free plastic that snaps onto the 20 oz or 30 oz version of the cup. You can also use the snap-on lid with the Rambler Lowball, a mini version of the cup we’ve grown to love.

A Little About YETI

In 2006 YETI Coolers was founded with a simple mission: To build the cooler you’d use every day if it existed. It would be one that was built for the serious outdoor enthusiast rather than for the mass-discount retailers. It could take the abuse we knew you’d put it through on camping trips and on the water.

The goal was to make a cooler that simply wouldn’t break. They decided early on that product innovation would come from necessity and firsthand experience — not from market research and data analysis. And they’d never sacrifice quality for a few extra bucks. Because having your cooler’s lid cave in when using it as a casting platform should never be part of anyone’s fishing trip.

Today it is the cooler of choice for outdoor enthusiasts, pros, tailgaters, and backyard barbecue kings. And that still gets us fired up. Ultimately, life is about having a good time doing what you love. And for the folks at YETI, that’s being outdoors hunting whitetail, catching a tarpon on the fly, and spending time with families and buddies. They’re wild at heart. So their coolers couldn’t be anything less.

YETI Rambler 20 oz Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Tumbler Features & Benefits

YETI Rambler 20 oz Stainless Steel

Don't you hate it when your favorite beverage loses its frosty (or piping hot) goodness before you have a chance to fully enjoy it? We sure do, and that's why we love YETI’s over-engineered our Rambler Tumblers with kitchen-grade 18/8 stainless steel and double-wall vacuum insulation.

The result is a tough, hard-wearing personal drink cooler that maintains ice twice as long as plastic tumblers – and it works just as well for hot beverages. The lid that keeps your liquid in its place is easy to clean, shatter-resistant and crystal clear so you know exactly how much of your drink you still have to look forward to. It’s dishwasher safe too.

20 oz Tumbler

With the Rambler 20 oz. Tumbler, your beverages will stay ice cold or piping hot longer. They over-engineered these double-wall insulated tumblers with an 18/8 stainless steel body, which means your drink still keeps its temperature no matter how much of a beating this cup takes. They’re BPA-free (obviously), have a no sweat design to make sure your hands stay dry and the design is dishwasher-safe. Plus its crystal-clear lid lets you check your drink status in a flash. Refill, anyone?

18/8 Stainless Steel

The stainless steel on-the-go cup solution. Kitchen-grade, durable, and rust-proof material that lasts a lifetime.

Double-Wall Vacuum Insulation

The insulation keeps your drink as cold as science allows. It also keeps hot drinks hot.

No Sweat Design

The no sweat design makes for a secure grip with no condensation. Keeps fingers dry and you won't need a coaster.

The lid is dishwasher-safe and shatter-resistant. Construction is heavy duty. The lid’s suction is so effective that you can pick it up by the lid and it doesn’t come off of your cup. All in all, this is a great purchase. The only thing that we would have you keep in mind is that it’s perfect for cold weather, as hot beverages take a very long time to cool down inside the mug.

The Rambler Series

YETI Rambler 20 oz - Rambler Series

Did you know that the Rambler series of drinkware is the first line of YETIs you can fit in your hand? And, yeah, they over-engineered these YETI Tumblers to be virtually indestructible and keep your drink as cold (or hot) as science allows. With 18/8 stainless steel construction, double-wall vacuum insulation, and a no sweat design, they’re perfect for the deer lease, cleaning table, or just the times in between your outdoor adventures.

We Tested It Out

YETI Rambler 20 oz - Tested It Out

We had to see for ourselves if the YETI Rambler 20 oz was as good as the reviews said. And we’ve got to say – we were pleasantly surprised with what we found. The perfect on the go cup is one that can hold both hot and cold liquids and keep them at their desired temperatures. We took the rambler out for its first test, coffee.

The Hot Coffee Test

If you’re anything like us, you drink way too much coffee in the morning – about three cups to be exact. During cold winters, nothing is better than pouring your coffee into a travel mug and having something warm and caffeinated to accompany you on your way to work. Want to know the best part about using the YETI Rambler 20 oz? You won’t have to reheat your coffee. If anything, your coffee will probably be too hot by the time you get to work. This mug seriously delivers when it claims to hold temperatures.

The Cold Drink Test

Do you also pour a drink and then forget about it when you’re doing something around the house? We’ve always thought of ourselves as multi-taskers but maybe this is the area where we fail. You come back and your drink is all warm. But hey, don’t worry too much. The YETI Rambler 20 oz has solved this problem for the both of us. How? It actually keeps cold drinks cold. Walk away and forget about it for hours. It won’t matter. When you come back, your drink will be just as cold as when you first poured it. Magic.

Minor Flaws

The only minor flaw we noticed in the YETI Rambler 20 oz is the design of the lid. It spilled a few times while we sipped; some sort of closing mechanism would be helpful. If you’re taking this tumbler along on a road trip just don’t fill your cup to the bring and you should be fine. Avoid the sloshing around.

What Travelers Are Saying About the YETI Rambler 20 oz Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Tumbler

At the time of writing, the YETI Rambler 20 0z Tumbler has over 5,300 reviews on Amazon with a four and a half out of five-star rating. This is such a great cup for when you’re on the go. Fill up some hot coffee in the morning or bring something cold with you on a hot summer’s day. Overall, travelers absolutely love this Tumbler. As far as the coffee temperature maintaining capabilities, we were impressed.

Other Options

While the YETI Rambler 20 oz is the perfect size for an on the go drink, YETI also offers the rambler in two other sizes that really come in handy. Check out these tumblers.

10 oz Lowball

The Rambler 10 oz. Lowball is the ideal drinking companion at the deer lease or around the campfire. Whether it replaces your morning coffee cup or serves as your nightly whiskey glass, the Lowball's double-wall vacuum insulation will keep your hot drinks hot and your cold drinks cold far longer than standard drinkware. And unlike your favorite bourbon glass, this Lowball will never shatter or leave a ring on your coffee table.

30 oz Tumbler

Days on the dock are made better with the Rambler 30 oz. Tumbler. It’ll keep your dinnertime drink cool well past sundown or your coffee nice and hot throughout the morning. The Rambler 30 oz. Tumbler is made of 18/8 kitchen-grade stainless steel, has double-wall vacuum insulation, and no sweat design. This means that you’ve got one heavy-duty, over-engineered stainless steel tumbler on your hands with the Rambler. It’s dishwasher safe, BPA-free, and ready for just about anything.

Alternative Travel Mugs You May Like

Do you want to look around a little longer? No worries. We’ve got you covered. Here are some picks for travel mugs. We’re pretty sure you will love them just as much as we do.

Thermos Stainless King 16 Ounce Travel Mug with Handle

Thermos Stainless King

We’re sure you know all about the Thermos brand. After all, they’ve been around for more than 110 years. Just like traditional containers, heat and cold find their way in through convection. Pour yourself some hot tea, coffee, or cold water inside, the heat or cold is retained in your mug through vacuum insulation. Your drink will stay steamy or icy no matter what the forecast says.

Make sure that before you use it and as soon as possible after each use, make sure you wash all parts of the mug with warm, soapy water. Rinse all of the parts thoroughly and let them dry. While this mug is easy to wash, I’m conflicted about the assembly. There are several moving parts you have to put in place for it to function before each use. Overall though, this mug has more pros than cons. It’s also top-rack dishwasher safe.

  • Ultra-durable travel mug with handle for hot and cold beverages; 16-ounce capacity
  • Durable stainless steel interior and exterior
  • Leak-proof Drinklock sealing lid
  • check Hand wash only
  • check Stays cool to the touch with hot liquids and is condensation-free with cold

Are you looking for the best travel mug? Well,  you’ve found one of them here. The AA Products Tumbler is a  high-quality stainless steel mug that will not break. It’s designed to last and resist rust and corrosion.

We particularly love that the stainless steel repels any lingering flavors. Slip this travel mug into your gym bag, backpack, or briefcase as your daily companion. It won’t leak. Furthermore, it fits perfectly into your cup holder, making it the perfect road trip companion.

Your cold drinks will stay cold for up to 24 hours. Your steamy beverages will stay hot for up to eight hours. This easily portable bottle can be brought just about anywhere. Bottlebottle 20 oz Insulated Tumbler Cup Stainless Steel Coffee Mug

Bottlebottle 20 oz Insulated Tumbler Cup

Yes, the Bottlebottle tumbler is also made from durable stainless steel. But what makes it a good choice for the best travel mug? The inner wall and shell are combined together by welding technique, then condensing the air into the interlayer of the inner wall and the outer shell to achieve the effect of vacuum insulation. Your beverage will keep hot and cold as long as possible.

Vacuum insulation technology comes in handy too. No matter how cold or hot your beverage is, the exterior of your tumbler will stay dry and mild to hold. It won’t leak or spill in your car, bag, or on your desk. It’s important to note that this travel mug is not dishwasher, freezer, or microwave safe. The exterior is finished with gloss/matte colored powder. It is BPA free, durable and sleek. I love the variety of color choices it comes in. This is such a fun mug to take for your adventures on the go.

  • Superior Temperature Retention: This travel mug is designed to keep your beverage ice cold up to 24 hours and warm up to 8 hours. Double wall vacuum insulation technology eliminates the transfer of temperature to the outside
  • Drinking friendly and BPA Free Lid: I love that this clear lid is BPA free, designed for either sipping directly or using a straw; Large open mouth allows adding ice into the tumbler and makes it easy to clean
  • Food Grade Stainless Steel: Made from 18/8 stainless steel with super thick structure, highly resistant to rust, absorbing odor, and retaining taste. Reusable, great for health and environment
  • check No-sweat Exterior: A double wall vacuum insulation ensures the tumbler condensation and sweat free regardless of the temperature inside, guarantees a mild temperature for you to hold. No messy moisture or water stains will be left on table, car holder & bag
  • check Colorful Powder Coating: Powder coated with gloss/matte finish, stylish tumbler of various color are available, durable, provides a comfortable touch feeling, makes your tumbler distinct in the group of your friends

The Yeti mug with handle coffee cup is awesome for at-home use.

I like to have a BIG cup of coffee when I wake up and this cup is perfect for early mornings with the kids.

Once again, I actually fell in love with this product after I started using my husband’s Yeti mug!

But he had the old version without the MagSlide Lid and BOY does this lid make a difference in keeping your coffee hot for a couple of extra hours!

Instead of heat leaving through the open part of the lid, you just move the MagSlide over it.

This is a great feature for busy parents who often forget their coffee somewhere in the house or need to take breaks between putting babies to sleep.

I literally just did this!

Twenty minutes later, my coffee is still at perfect drinking temperature 🙂

Here’s a comparison between the old-style lid and the new MagSlide one.

Both lids are compatible with all Yeti mugs so if you love an old color that doesn’t come with it, you can always upgrade to the new MagSlide lid later.

If my lid somehow makes it into the dishwasher without my mug, I’ll just pop it onto my husband’s mug instead of using the old-style lid!

Are Yeti mugs good?

Yes, they are the BEST!

I’m ready to say goodbye to all of my glass coffee cups after getting a Yeti mug .

It keeps my coffee hot and holds the perfect amount.

Is a Yeti mug spill-proof?

Just about!

I’d say Yeti mugs are about 95% spill-proof.

If one of your kids knocks it over on the table or a couch for instance (I have a lot of experience with this), it’ll contain most of the liquid while you have time to react.

I’ve never had a lid fall off and usually only have a minor spill to clean up when accidents happen.

Obviously, you are 100% better off than having an open coffee cup alone!

It’s hard to go back to drinking out of a coffee cup without a lid after using this one.

Here’s the mug with the lid on it next to the 12 oz rambler.

While the mug is my go-to coffee cup at home, it’s WAY too wide to fit into the cup holder of my German vehicle!

The 12 oz rambler is the perfect size for when you’re on the go and is just 2 oz smaller than the 14 oz Yeti mug.

What mugs are better than Yeti?

It depends on your purpose!

If keeping your liquids warm is the priority, you may want to consider the Ember Temperature Control Smart Mug .

It features a charging coaster that keeps your hot liquids warm!

Personally, I couldn’t justify spending this much on a mug though and am moving away from smart technology as much as possible.

And for that reason, I think Yeti mugs are the only way to go!

Yeti Coffee Mug Sizes

Yeti makes five different sized mugs:

  • Yeti Rambler 10 oz Mug
  • Yeti Rambler 14 oz Mug
  • Yeti Rambler 20 oz Travel Mug
  • Yeti Rambler 24 oz Mug
  • Yeti Rambler 30 oz Travel Mug

The difference between the regular mugs and the travel mugs is that the travel mugs have smaller bases to accommodate the size of cup holders in most vehicles.

Personally, I found the 14 oz mug was the perfect size for at-home use and have a 12 oz tumbler for on the go.

I tend to drink less coffee while I’m out than I do at home because I’m usually running errands with kids and have my hands (and heart) full.

If you prefer a mug with a handle during your travels, I think the 20 oz size would be a great choice!

Yeti Mug vs Tumbler

I use a Yeti mug at home and a 12 oz tumbler on the go.

The presence of a handle is nice for home but I’d rather have a bottle without one on the go.

Here’s a comparison between the 14 oz Yeti mug and the 12 oz Yeti tumbler.

The tumbler fits better in my purse than a travel mug would and I like the screw-on cap for preventing spills.

As I said before, the MagSlide lid does an EXCELLENT job at preventing most of the damage done by spills but the screw-on Hot Shot cap prevents 100% of potential accidents.

I have never experienced a spill with this lid or a leak with this lid.

That said, it takes a couple of seconds longer to take a sip from your cup.

Instead of simply pushing the MagSlide over with your thumb, you need to hold the tumbler in one hand and gently twist the Hot Shot cap to open it to your desired pour level with the other hand.

It really is a difference of just a few seconds!

But when deciding between the two, it’s something to consider.

Here’s a breakdown of the differences:

  • travel mugs have a handle while tumblers don’t
  • travel mugs have the MagSlide lid while tumblers are available with the MagSlide or Hot Shot cap
  • travel mugs come in two sizes ( 20 oz or 30 oz ) while tumblers come in four sizes ( 10 oz , 12 oz , 20 oz , or 30 oz )

Final Thoughts: Yeti Mug Review

I LOVE my Yeti mug and have gifted several to family members and friends!

They’re fantastic for busy moms and dads on the go and keep your hot liquids at the perfect drinking temperature.

The new MagSlide lid was a game-changer – it keeps my coffee hot for about two hours longer than the original mug lid did!

Personally, I found the 14 oz mug size was perfect for coffee and tea and couldn’t see myself using the 10 oz or 24 oz sizes nearly as much.

If I were more of a tea drinker, I might consider the 24 oz one though!

What about you? Are you more of a coffee or tea person? Which Yeti mug will you choose?

Let me know in the comments below.

Happy sipping, friend!

The Winners, at a Glance

What we learned, the criteria: what to look for in a travel mug, our favorite travel mugs, the competition.

  • Why We're the Experts

Straight to the Point

Our favorite travel mug is from Zojirushi . It keeps coffee and hot beverages warm for a remarkably long time and has a locking flip lid. For coffee and tea enthusiasts, the Fellow Carter Move Mug has a thinner-edged lip that offers a better drinking experience.

After working at a coffee shop right out of college, I stopped drinking caffeine. It was the inevitable result of having way too much of it (post-college, I did not understand moderation) and coming home with my hair, skin, and clothes smelling of it chronically. But years later, after getting married to a coffee enthusiast (some would say snob), I came back to my love of coffee.

Though I now work from home and can savor my coffee slowly out of a mug, my husband often needs to bring his second cup of coffee on the go. Coupled with the extensive camping and road-tripping we do, travel mugs of all sorts have started to accumulate in our kitchen cabinets.

This is all to say: A review of travel mugs is right up my alley. I set out to test 15 of them to see which ones retained heat and cold best, were comfortable and easy to use, didn’t leak, and offered the best drinking experience.

The Best Overall Travel Mug

Zojirushi sm-sc48hm stainless steel vacuum insulated mug.

This travel mug is deceptively lightweight, yet still holds 16 fluid ounces of coffee or tea. It retains heat for a remarkably long time (longer than any other mug I tested). The lid not only opens up with a simple click of a button but also locks shut with a side switch, so you don’t have to worry about it accidentally opening.

The Best Travel Mug for Coffee and Tea Enthusiasts

Fellow carter move mug.

Courtesy of Fellow

The Fellow Carter Move Mug is designed with coffee enthusiasts in mind. Its heat and cold retention was second only to the Zojirushi and the inner chamber of the mug is ceramic-lined for a neutral flavor. The thin lip of the mug made drinking coffee out of it a pleasure.

Another Good Travel Mug

Kinto day off tumbler.

The Kinto Day Off Tumber is another excellent option for coffee and tea lovers. The top has a looped handle that makes it easy to carry around and the inner lid has a built-in splash guard. It also retains heat and cold for an exceptionally long time.

Note: If a temperature-controlled travel mug is what you're interested in (where you can set and hold the temperature for a prolonged period of time), then the Ember is the one to get. We tested temperature control mugs separately .

  • Heat Retention Test One (without Lid): I filled each travel mug with 212°F boiling water, then left the lid off. I inserted a ChefAlarm 's probe (our favorite probe thermometer ) and set the alarm to 140°F to see how long it took for the temperature to drop.
  • Heat Retention Test Two (with Lid): I filled each travel mug with 212°F boiling water, and then placed the lid on. I took temperature readings each hour to see how long it took for it to drop to 140°F.
  • Cold Retention with Lid: I filled each travel mug with 36°F cold water, and then put the lid back on. I placed the mugs in an oven with the light on, monitoring the temperature of the oven to keep it within 80 to 85°F, to simulate a warm day. I took temperature readings each hour to see how long it took for the water to reach 60°F.
  • Leak Test: I filled each travel mug with water and placed the lid back on. I vigorously shook the travel mug upside down to see how much it would leak.
  • Drinking Test: I filled each mug with 12 ounces of freshly brewed coffee , carrying it around the apartment and outside on walks and drinking from it to see how the user experience was.
  • Cleaning Test: After each test, I thoroughly cleaned the mugs and lids.

Screw Tops Didn’t Leak Like Pop Tops

The travel mugs I tested had two types of lids. One style screwed onto the mug’s body and the other popped on and had a rubber gasket that held the lid in place. The latter were easier to put on, as all you needed to do was push the lid onto the body. However, these mugs all leaked...some worse than others.

Conversely, most of the screw-on lids I tested did not leak much, if at all as long as they were put on properly. The bottom line: Get a travel mug with a screw-on lid and double-check that the lid is properly aligned and seated to avoid leakage.

Drink Buttons Were Annoying

Some lids, like the Contigo West Loop Stainless Steel and Stanley Classic Trigger , require pressing a button to drink from the mug. In theory, this seems like a great idea, as it only requires one hand and could prevent leakage. However, continually pressing a button for extended periods causes hand fatigue, especially if you have mobility or strength issues. This was especially noticeable with the Stanley mug, which had a stronger spring that required more pressure and strength to press.

Lid Design and Drinking Experience

Some lids (like the Camelbak , Yeti Rambler Tumbler , and Yeti Rambler Mug ) featured thick plastic lids with drink holes set slightly back from the edge. Drinking from them felt bulky and cumbersome. Other lids, like the Simple Modern Kona Collection , had a latch right near the opening, hitting my bottom lip as I sipped. My favorite travel mugs had thinner lid edges (like the Zojirushi and Fellow ) or rounder-edged lids (like the Kinto ), which felt more natural and pleasant to drink from. Both the Fellow and the Kinto also allowed you to drink from the mug in any direction.

Heat and Cold Retention

The travel mugs that had the best heat retention also, unsurprisingly, kept liquids cold longer as well. The Zojirushi blew every other mug away on both accounts, taking over 14 hours to drop from 212°F to 140°F and nearly 20 hours for 38°F water to warm up to 60°F. The second-best mug in these tests, the Fellow , took a respectable 10 hours to drop from 212°F to 140°F and 6 hours to go from 38°F to 60°F. The Kinto mug also took 10 hours to drop down to 140°F and 13 hours to get to 60°F. With these three mugs, you could carry around your coffee or tea and it'll stay hot or cold nearly all day.

On the flip side, some of the worse performing mugs, like the Hydro Flask and Corkcicle , dropped temperature alarmingly fast, from 212°F boiling to 140°F in just three hours and 38°F to 60°F in about eight hours. Most folks drink their coffee and tea within a few hours of brewing it, but if you prefer your coffee piping hot or you have a long commute, it’s nice to have a mug that'll go the distance.

Look for a travel mug that has a double-walled, vacuum-sealed body for the best heat and cold retention. Select a travel mug that has a screw-on lid. Pop-on lids are more convenient but leaked. Pick a travel mug that has a rounded or thinner lip for the most pleasant drinking experience.

And, finally, get a travel mug that's suitable for your lifestyle. If you are constantly on the road, look for a mug that's lightweight, easily opens up with just one hand, and fits in your car's cup holder. If you're a long-distance commuter on public transit, find a mug that retains heat exceptionally well and can be safely tossed into a bag.

What we liked : The Zojirushi retained heat and cold for a remarkably long time, longer than any mug I tested. The 212°F boiling water took a little over 14 hours to cool down to 140°F, while cold 36°F water took over 20 hours to warm up to 60°F. The flip-top was easy to use, with a simple button that popped it open. There’s a secondary latch that locks the lid, too.

The mug has a thin plastic lip and the lid comes apart into two pieces, which makes it easier to clean. The inside features a nonstick coating, preventing stains. Best of all, this slim travel mug is incredibly lightweight.

What we didn’t like: The heat retention of the mug is one of its best features. But it also means freshly brewed coffee takes a while to cool down to a drinkable temperature. If you plan on drinking the coffee from the travel mug immediately, make sure to let the coffee cool before pouring it in. Otherwise, you might scald your tongue with each sip.

Also, the opening of this travel mug is narrower than other models. This made it more challenging to clean. (You’ll want a bottle brush for the task.)

  • Material: Stainless steel with nonstick coating and BPA-free plastic
  • Dimensions: 2.625 inches diameter; 8.5 inches tall
  • Dishwasher-safe: No
  • Stated capacity: 16 fluid ounces
  • Fits in a car’s cup holder: Yes
  • Weight: 7 ounces

What we liked : The Fellow Carter Move Mug is great if you prioritize the coffee or tea-drinking experience. The interior chamber of the travel mug is ceramic lined, to help prevent any metallic taste that a cheaper stainless steel model might impart to your coffee or tea. The thin metal edge of the mug feels great on your lips and allows you to drink in whatever direction you pick the mug up from.

The mug features a removable “splash guard” insert that looks a bit like a sink drain. This prevents hot liquid from splashing outwards. The double-walled, vacuum-sealed body retained heat, taking over 10 hours to drop from 212°F to 140°F and 16 hours to rise from 36°F to 60°F.

What we didn’t like: The mug's lid requires you to unscrew it and you need two hands to do so. This also means you have a lid that you need to carry (or put down) when you're drinking. That said, Fellow does sell an optional slide lid (which I did not test).

  • Material: Stainless steel with ceramic interior coating
  • Dimensions: 3 inches diameter; 7.25 inches tall
  • Weight: 12.5 ounces

What we liked : The Kinto is a well-constructed, lightweight mug that retained heat and cold for fairly long, taking nearly 10 hours to cool 212°F boiling water down to 140°F and 13 hours for 36°F water to warm up to 60°F. The mug itself features a two-part top, one that screws onto the body and acts as a splash shield, and one that's a sealing lid with a looped handle.

The first splash shield offers a tapered lip and allows you to drink from all sides of the mug. Like the Fellow, this makes it a pleasure to drink from. The handle on top of the sealing lid is nice for carrying, too.

What we didn’t like: Because the Kinto mug has two parts to the lid that screws onto the body, there is twice the chance of user error where you can misalign the threads and not properly screw on the lid. Like the Fellow, the Kinto lid screws on, which means it requires two hands to remove it. Unlike the Fellow, though, the lid does have a handle, so it's easier to wrap your fingers around it and hold on to it, allowing you to drink with one hand.

  • Material: 18-8 Stainless steel powder coated, with polypropylene and silicone
  • Dimensions: 2.75 inches diameter; 9 inches tall
  • Stated capacity: 16.9 fluid ounces
  • Weight: 10.5 ounces
  • Contigo Stainless Steel Vacuum-Insulated Travel Mug : Contigo makes reasonably priced travel mugs and this one does a good job retaining heat and cold. But the shape of the lid and its small opening meant coffee pooled on top of the lid between sips, which caused dribbling and spilling.
  • Hydro Flask All-Around Stainless Steel Tumbler with Lid : The Hydro Flask travel mug lost heat the quickest of all the mugs I tested, and the pop-on lid leaked.
  • Yeti Rambler 20-Ounce Tumbler : This Yeti Rambler had a pop-on lid that leaked and didn’t retain heat or cold very well.
  • MiiR Flip Traveler: This solidly constructed, lightweight mug was easy to use and retained heat and cold better than most of the mugs I tested. Unfortunately, it leaked a bit, no matter how much I tightened or screwed on the lid.
  • Yeti Rambler 20-Ounce Travel Mug: Unlike the Yeti tumbler we tested, this Yeti mug had a screw-on lid that didn’t leak. It also retained heat and cold for a respectable amount of time. But the thick plastic lid made drinking out of the mug less pleasant than our winners.
  • Contigo West Loop Stainless Steel Vacuum-Insulated Travel Mug : This Contigo mug did a decent job with retaining heat and cold, but having to hold down a button to drink was tedious.
  • Simple Modern Travel Coffee Mug : This mug lost heat and cold relatively quickly.
  • Corkcicle Commuter Cup : Unfortunately, this mug lost heat extremely quickly (in just over three hours).
  • W&P Porter Insulated Tumbler : I loved the feel of this tumbler and its colorful design. But the insulated tumbler lost heat relatively quickly and leaked terribly when turned upside down.
  • CamelBak Horizon Tumbler : The Camelbak tumbler did a poor job of retaining heat and cold. It also had a snap-on lid that leaked.
  • Stanley Classic Trigger Action Travel Mug : The rugged and durable mug felt like what your grandfather probably drank from as he backcountry hiked his way across the Rocky Mountains. It’s built to last a lifetime (and is backed with a lifetime warranty as well). And it did a good job retaining heat and cold. But it's slightly annoying to drink from since you have to push a button to sip. And when you did, the coffee flowed out very slowly.
  • Simple Modern Insulated Thermo s: This travel mug did a great job retaining heat and cold. But the small lid had a flip-top with a locking latch that protruded fairly high, bumping into my bottom lip.

How do you clean coffee or tea stains off of a stainless steel travel mug?

Sprinkle some baking soda (about one to two teaspoons) into the mug and add water to form a paste. Gently scrub with a damp cloth, soft sponge, or bottle brush. The mildly abrasive baking soda should remove the stains.

How do you maximize the heat and cold retention of a travel mug?

For hot beverages, warm up the inside of the travel mug by pouring hot water (it can from the tap) into the mug, letting it sit for a couple of minutes, and empty the mug. Then, add your coffee or hot beverage. For cold drinks, cool the inside by pouring in water and adding a few ice cubes, swirling the cubes around, then drain it and add the cold beverage.

What size travel mug is best?

For most folks, a 12- or 16-ounce travel mug is sufficient. If you're a hardcore coffee drinker or you travel a longer distance for work, a larger 20-ounce mug might be a better fit.

How do you clean a travel mug lid?

If your travel mug's lid disassembles, take it apart. Then soak the lid in warm, soapy water for 10 to 15 minutes, then scrub and thoroughly rinse.

What is the best travel mug?

After testing, the Zojirushi travel mug came out on top, with a convenient flip-top and excellent insulation. But if you prioritize the coffee-drinking experience, the Fellow Carter Move Mug and Kinto Day-Off Tumbler are also excellent.

What travel mug won't leak?

All of our favorite travel mugs (from Zojirushi, Fellow, and Kinto) are leak-proof. The Zojirushi features a flip-cap that locks, while the other two have screw-on lids that prevent accidental spills.

The Best Travel Coffee Mugs, Whether You Walk, Ride, or Drive

Best Travel Coffee Mugs

All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission.

We take our recommendation for the best travel coffee mugs very seriously. The working world (ours anyway) runs on caffeine, and for many coffee drinkers, that need has to be satisfied on the go. So a good travel coffee mug—one that’s easy to hold, doesn't leak, and keeps hot coffee hot and iced coffee cold—is a must.

Yeti Rambler 10-Ounce Tumbler with Magslide Lid

To find the best travel mugs available right now, we tested more than 20 popular and top-rated options in a variety of shapes and sizes. Below, you’ll find our top picks for commuters of all kinds, followed by the details of how we tested and what we looked for. To learn the pros and cons of all the other mugs we tested, keep reading.

The best travel coffee mug to toss in your bag: Zojirushi

Of all the travel mugs we tested, there are only a few we’d feel comfortable tossing into a bag with our laptop or favorite book, and of them all, this one was the absolute best at keeping our coffee hot. After five hours the hot coffee we poured in was almost too hot to drink.

That excellent heat retention is due to the Zojirushi’s vacuum-insulated, double-walled stainless steel. Though it sounds like a beast, this travel mug is actually relatively lightweight and has a super-slim design that fits perfectly in your hand or bag. It also looks really nice, which is a definite plus for a mug you'll be carting around everywhere.

And you never have to worry about coffee spilling inside your bag or briefcase because the spout cap has a pretty serious sliding lock on the top that, when engaged, makes it impossible to open or spill. Shake, rattle, roll this thing—it's not going to leak any hot drinks on you or whatever else you’re carrying. The lid also comes apart for easy hand washing.

The Zojirushi travel tumbler isn’t dishwasher-safe, which is true of many vacuum-insulated vessels. This was the slimmest travel mug we tested (the opening of all three sizes is just 1⅝ inch) so if you want to clean it with friction, you’ll need a soft bottle bottle brush . That kind of cleaning shouldn’t be necessary often since the inside has a non-stick coating. We weren’t able to find any kind of documentation on what that coating actually is but it probably is nothing to worry about as the issues with nonstick cookware are around exposing it to direct, high heat or scratching it with metal utensils, neither of which are likely in a coffee cup. The super-slim design also means this mug may rattle around in a car cup holder, and the 20-ounce size is too tall to fit under our Nespresso VertuoPlus spout (you’d likely run into the same issue with other single-serve coffee makers ). Finally, sipping from the Zojirushi is slightly more awkward to drink from than many of the other mugs we tried, but it’s a small price to pay for such incredible heat retention and the peace of mind that comes with having a truly leak-free travel mug to use for hot drinks on the go.

The best dishwasher safe travel coffee mug to toss in your bag: Brumate

If you want a spill-proof, leak-proof travel mug that you can also stick in the dishwasher at the end of the day, we recommend the Brumate Nav. This tapered, tumbler-style mug is just as secure as the Zojirushi, though the “BevLock” lid uses a slider to lock a flip-top spout cover into place. And even when it’s not locked, this mug won’t leak; the lock just provides an extra layer of security in case the flip-top were to catch on something strong.

We accidentally turned our testing up to eleven one morning when we dropped this mug—full of piping hot coffee—while trying to shuffle small kids out the door. The lid was closed, but not locked, and we didn’t lose a single drop or burn any toddlers.

The insulated stainless steel body retains heat well (though not as well as the Zojirushi) and we appreciate that the BPA-free clear plastic lid allows us to look inside the cup.

The Brumate doesn’t retain heat nearly as well as the Zojirushi, but if you consume your coffee within an hour or two, it’s more than sufficient. The product description says it will keep hot drinks hot for three hours, but we only experience that kind of heat retention if the mug is full, and stays that way, for the entire three hours. We’d also love to see this mug in a 16-ounce size.

The best travel coffee mug for the car: Yeti Rambler with Magslide Lid

If you like to take your coffee in the car, you might not need a truly leak-proof mug. But you still need something to prevent sloshing and splashing when you inevitably encounter a pothole or other rough road. And, of course, a travel mug for the car must be able to keep your coffee hot even on brutally-cold mornings.

Yeti’s tumbler-style Rambler mug meets all of our requirements for a car-friendly coffee mug, and then some. The double-wall vacuum insulation keeps your drink hot for hours, the slim base fits comfortably in a car cup holder, and the Magslide spout cover is really easy to open with one hand while driving (it’s easiest if you slide it open while it’s still in the cup holder).

This mug is also incredibly easy to clean as all three parts are dishwasher safe. The little magnetic slider stays securely put until you pop it off from the underside of the lid.

Aside from the fact that it’s not leak-proof, there’s not much we don’t love about this mug. But some coffee drinkers may find the size options limiting. The 10-ounce is perfect for an 8-ounce pour-over, a small latte, or a couple shots of espresso, but the next size up is 20-ounces and that may feel too big if you just want to commute with a cup of coffee. We’d love to see this mug offered in a 14-ounce or 16-ounce size, too.

How we tested travel coffee mugs

For weeks we conducted unofficial testing, adding these mugs to our regular coffee-vessel rotation. When it came time for the official testing, we filled all of the mugs with piping hot water and let them sit on our desks for five hours. We then sipped from each to determine if they had retained heat. Next, we put the containers through a stress test, shaking them and tipping them up and down to see if anything leaked. Finally, we took some brisk walks to mimic the frantic conditions of a morning commute, coffee mug in hand. We did not preheat the mugs by filling them with hot water first—we figured the typical user would not do this and we wanted to see how well each mug retained heat without this step.

What we looked for

Obviously, a travel mug needs to be spill-proof, but mugs that will travel in a bag also need to be completely leak proof. To test the seal on each mug, we filled them with hot coffee, closed the lids according to the manufacturer’s directions, and shook them vigorously while turned upside down.

One of the most important considerations was temperature retention, so we looked at how well the mug kept coffee hot over the course of a few hours. We lined up the mugs and tasted them side by side after five hours to see which one was the hottest.

If a mug was marketed as leak-proof, we looked at how hard or easy it was to engage its leak-free function. Mugs that are too hard to seal are more likely to malfunction when you’re running out the door in a hurry.

We didn't want a travel coffee mug that was too heavy or unwieldy, as this would make it more difficult to carry around while commuting. We also considered how much you had to maneuver your mouth while drinking.

If a mug wasn’t listed as dishwasher safe, we looked at how easy it was to get all parts—including the nooks and crannies of the lid—thoroughly clean with hand washing .

Yes, these mugs are utilitarian vessels meant for keeping hot beverages hot and cold beverages cold, but let’s not pretend looks don’t matter. These are accessories as much as they are tools.

Personal preference dictates what size coffee cup you’ll need, and if you make yourself an 8-ounce latte every morning, a 20-ounce travel mug is going to be too big. So we looked for mugs that offered a range of sizes—including mugs big enough for those who do like to chug 24 ounces of coffee on the way to work.

For car commuters, a base that’s too wide is a deal breaker. So we looked at whether or not these mugs were slim enough to fit into standard car cup holders.

Other travel coffee mugs we tested

We love this bigger Yeti Rambler mug for most of the reasons we loved our top pick for the car, and it even has a handle and a more leak-resistant (though not leak-proof) lid. But the smallest size is 20-ounces and it’s just big enough that it’s not guaranteed to fit in every car cup holder. Plus, unless you’re planning to hit the road with an entire French press-worth of coffee, a 20- or 30-ounce capacity is overkill for your morning commute.

Yeti Rambler Travel Mug with Stronghold Lid

Yeti's most mug-shaped Rambler mug has the best size selection of all of the Rambler mugs and the two smaller sizes (10 ounces and 14 ounces) are stackable. But because it's mug-shaped, it won't fit in a car cup holder. And because it has the Magslider lid, it's not leak proof, either. While this one is generally good for camping, the handle is pretty basic and not very comfortable to hold—especially if the 24-ounce size is full of hot coffee.

Yeti Rambler 24-Ounce Mug

With the addition of the Hotshot lid, Yeti’s versatile, durable insulated Rambler water bottle becomes a (mostly) leak-proof travel mug for coffee, tea, and other hot or cold drinks. The Hotshot lid, when twisted to the open position, allows you to drink from any spot along the rim. We say it’s “mostly” leak-proof though, because if it’s not closed tightly enough, it is possible to shake some drops out of this mug when turned upside down—and we don’t love that it allows for that kind of user error. You can also buy the Hotshot cap separately , which is a great way to get even more out of a Yeti Rambler bottle you already own. Well, as long as you make sure to close it really well.

Brumate haș a series of leak-proof coffee mugs with handles called Toddy and these mugs have nearly all the same features we love about the Nav. But the reasonably-sized option ( 16 ounces ) is too wide to fit into any cupholder. The two larger sizes ( 22 ounces and 32 ounces ) have tapered bottoms and actually do fit into many cup holders, but most coffee drinkers will find they're otherwise just too big, in general.

Klean Kanteen is best known for its lightweight stainless steel reusable water bottles (and for tripping up our spell check every damn time) but the brand also makes a very nice double-wall, vacuum-insulated stainless steel travel tumbler. In fact, it’s so nice it’s almost perfect. This mug has excellent heat retention, and the powder-coated body is durable, dishwasher safe, and covered by Klean Kanteen’s lifetime warranty. The tumbler’s wide mouth (wide for Klean Kanteen, anyway) is big enough to fit most ice cubes, and the bottle itself is slender enough to fit most cup holders. Unfortunately, you need to use two hands to open the leak-proof lid, which isn’t always conducive to drinking hot coffee while on the go.

We’re generally big fans of Oxo gear but the Oxo Good Grips travel mug we previously tested always leaked a little when tipped upside down. In 2023, we tested a newer model, which has what the brand calls a leak-proof “SimplyClean” lid. The mug comes in an array of pretty colors, all of the parts are dishwasher safe, and we found the lid to be truly leak free when properly assembled. However, the engineering required to get such a good seal is… a lot. Disassembling the lid for cleaning and reassembling it are each three-step processes—and the steps are so unintuitive that instructions, arrows, and numbers are actually embossed in various spots all over the three separate lid components (four if you count the removable gasket). After a few tries, it’s pretty easy to get used to how it all goes together, but coming from a brand that makes such user-friendly products, this leak-proof lid is more complicated than it needs to be. It’s also a little too easy to accidentally remove the entire lid when trying to open the spout.

We like that the short Hydro Flask coffee mug feels like a traditional mug, and this is the only “travel” mug we tested that comes in a 6-ounce size. Like all of Hydro Flask’s insulated products, this mug has great temperature retention and it’s also very durable thanks to solid construction. But because it doesn’t have a leak-proof lid or fit into a car cup holder, it’s definitely more of a “coffee on the front porch” mug or “hot toddy around the campfire” mug than an actual commuting mug. Another drawback? Unlike the brand’s powder-coated water bottles, Hydro Flask mugs are not powder-coated and therefore are not dishwasher safe .

This 16-ounce stainless steel vacuum-insulated travel mug from Thermos is good, and most people would probably be content using it, but there's also nothing remarkable about it. It didn't keep our coffee hot nearly as long as the Zojirushi and though it has a leak-proof lid, it doesn't lock like the Brumate does. It’s also only available in one size (16 ounces). That said, the underside of the lid does have a built-in hook for tea bags and loose-leaf tea infusers, so if you're a tea drinker who likes to take your hot tea on the go, you’ll like that feature.

When we first tested the Fellow Carter mug, we tried the Move model —a gorgeous ceramic-lined thermal mug that does a great job of keeping hot drinks hot. Unfortunately, the twist-off lid required the use of both hands, which kept the Fellow Carter from taking a top spot. When we retested travel mugs in 2023, we were thrilled to find that Fellow had recently released a new model of the Carter mug with a slide-lock lid (the lid can also be purchased separately if you already own a Carter mug). The smooth sliding mechanism makes it easy to open and close the angled lid with one hand, and though it doesn’t actually lock like the Zojirushi does, it is leak-proof when closed. But the angle of the new lid means our testers’ noses got smashed up against it every time we took a drink, and because of a lip around the inside of the body, it’s hard to get every last drop of coffee out of this mug. Additionally, the ceramic-coated stainless steel interior is supposed to keep this mug from holding onto smells, but we found that after just one use, it was nearly impossible to get the coffee smell out the lid —so this isn’t a tumbler we’d want to use interchangeably as a coffee cup and a water cup.

We wanted to love this beautiful powder-coated stainless steel tumbler from Kinto, a Japanese housewares brand. And for the most part, we did. The carry handle on the smartly-constructed top can be removed, revealing a thin circular opening that ensures controlled sipping. Liquid doesn’t pour out too quickly (no scalded tongue or ice cubes in the face) and when tightly sealed, it doesn’t leak. You can also remove the entire top of the mug, which makes pouring easy and makes the travel mug easy to clean. However, it’s impossible to open this mug one-handed. That, combined with its high price tag, kept it out of our top picks.

The MiiR Insulated Travel Tumbler got a lot of oohs and aahs during the unboxing phase of our test. It's sleek, bright, and incredibly comfortable to hold. And when you buy a mug, the brand gifts a portion of revenue to a charity project that's trackable via a code on the bottom of the mug. Hot drinks stay piping hot in this mug, thanks to what the brand calls “Thermo 3D Double Wall Vacuum Insulation Technology.” The locking flip lid is super-secure, too. Unfortunately, the way it’s designed makes it impossible to get the lid completely out of the way when drinking, which resulted in little spots of coffee on our testers’ noses with every single sip.

MiiR Insulated Travel Tumbler

S’well’s water bottles have a cult-like following so we were excited to try the brand’s sleek and simple vacuum-insulated travel tumbler. It did a good job keeping our coffee warm for a couple hours, but it wasn’t noticeably better than most of the other mugs we tried. The stainless-steel and BPA-free plastic lid is actually leak-proof thanks to an airtight flip-top spout cover. However, it flips easily enough we’d be worried about it catching on something in a bag and opening up by accident. Also, as with the Miir above, our testers’ noses got pressed into the piece that flips back while drinking—especially as we got toward the bottom of our hot and cold drinks. This design flaw is less annoying on this mug than it is on the Miir, but it’s annoying nonetheless.

Sip by Swell Stainless Steel Travel Mug

We can't help but love this vintage-inspired Stanley travel tumbler—but definitely not for coffee. It does a good job of keeping hot drinks hot, but after weeks of testing, we will only ever use it for ice water because following every single sip, a significant amount of whatever liquid is inside accumulates on the top of the supposedly leak-proof trigger-activated spout cover. When that liquid is coffee, you risk leaving little coffee stains everywhere you go. The slim design is really nice to hold and this tumbler fits in every cup holder we tried, but it’s kind of annoying to have to hold down the trigger the entire time you’re drinking.

Stanley Classic One Hand Vacuum Mug

This vacuum-insulated stainless steel travel mug from Ello looks like the kind of old-school speckled enamelware you'd find in your grandparents' house (that’s a good thing). More importantly, it holds heat well and doesn’t leak, though we wouldn’t want to toss it into a bag with any electronics or white clothes. It’s slender enough to fit in some (but not all) car cup holders—and unlike most of the insulated travel tumblers we tested, it has a handle. Technically, this mug is dishwasher safe, but the brand recommends hand-washing, and we’d want to do that anyway since the inside of the handle is lined with cork. There’s also no way to clean with friction under the sliding spout cover. Still, for less than $20, this mug is a good budget pick, especially if you want a cute, leak-proof insulated mug with a handle. But price is often indicative of quality, and while we have yet to encounter any problems, customer reviews indicate issues with long-term durability, and upon closer inspection, we realized we could probably snap off the handle with very little effort. (Intentional damage would not be covered by Ello’s limited lifetime warranty , but accidental breakage might be.) If you want something that will hold up to everyday use, consider investing in something that’s more solidly constructed.

Ello Campy Vacuum Insulated Travel Mug

Like the Ello Campy (above), the Ello Cole is a budget-friendly, vacuum-insulated, stainless steel tumbler with a leak-proof sliding spout cover. It holds heat well and all of the parts are top-rack dishwasher safe, though hand-washing the body is recommended. The Cole also has a cork accent, though on this mug, it’s a “built-in coaster,” which seems rather pointless since a well-insulated mug shouldn’t sweat. While we enjoyed testing this mug, we also worry about long-term durability after reading customer reviews—and the fact that there’s no way to deep clean under the slider lid is concerning, too.

The West Loop mug with Contigo’s leak-proof Autoseal lid is very leak-proof, thanks to a lock switch on the top. But even after unlocking the sip lid, you still have to push pretty hard on the autoseal button on the side of the lid to open it enough to get a good swig. In theory, it’s a good system, but when you just want to take a drink of coffee, it’s pretty annoying, especially because the button isn’t very responsive; it often feels like you’re not pushing it hard enough. We also had a really hard time getting the coffee smell out of the lid, even after just one use.

Our testers were divided on this collapsible silicone travel “mug.” It’s really more of a coffee cup to travel with than an actual travel mug, as it’s not insulated and the flip-top lid is more leak-resistant than leak-proof. But if you want something that takes up very little space when not in use, this is a decent option. Simply push down the cup from the top and it becomes about the size of a can of tuna. It also comes in lots of pretty colors and all of the parts are super easy to clean in the dishwasher. On the other hand, keeping track of all those parts (especially the support ring) can be kind of annoying.

The takeaway

If you want a travel mug that will keep your coffee piping hot (or your cold brew cold) for hours, the Zojirushi stainless steel mug has the best heat retention capabilities of any mug we tested. It’s also completely leak-proof so you can toss it in your bag without worry. The Brumate Nav , while not as great at retaining heat as the Zojirushi, has an equally-secure lid and the added benefit of being dishwasher-safe. For car commuters, we recommend the tumbler-style Yeti Rambler with the Magslide lid . Though not leak-proof, this dishwasher-safe, vacuum-insulated mug is pretty great at preventing spills while also keeping your morning coffee easily accessible—even while you keep your eyes on the road.

The Best Travel Mug

Four different travel mugs next to each other.

By Trey French and Anna Perling

Hot drinks are a daily staple for many, and just as important as the beverage is the travel mug that keeps it warm while you’re on the go.

After a decade of testing travel mugs, we still recommend the Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug for most people. It keeps drinks hot for hours, and its locking lid stays securely closed, even when you toss the mug into a bag. We also have another option, which fits better in most cup holders, for use while you’re driving.

OXO Good Grips Water Bottle Cleaning Set

For cleaning your mug.

This bottle-cleaning set has a skinny straw brush and a looped detail-cleaning brush, which are all you need to keep your travel mug squeaky clean.

The 16-ounce Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug keeps beverages hot for hours, even in cold environments. It has a well-designed exterior, an easy-to-clean nonstick Teflon interior, and a foolproof lid-locking mechanism that you can operate with one hand.

The mug is lightweight and slim, but it may not fit snugly in some cup holders. However, thanks to its locking lid, we were comfortable carrying it around in a bag, without worrying about leaks.

This Zojirushi model is pricey for a travel mug, but this is the mug we trust most not to spill in a bag, and it’s hard to put a price on that. (Actually, that would be about the price of a new bag, laptop, phone, and whatever else happened to be in there at the time.)

It’s also available in a 20-ounce version .

Like other Zojirushi products, it comes with a five-year warranty.

The 16-ounce Stanley Classic Trigger-Action Travel Mug is wider and fits better in most car cup holders than the Zojirushi mug. The lid has an auto-sealing button that prevents spills, and when you drink, it won’t block your view of the road ahead.

Although this Stanley model may not keep drinks as hot as the Zojirushi mug, some people might prefer such results—we’ve heard many complaints over the years of the Zojirushi mug keeping drinks too hot.

Both the mug and the lid are dishwasher safe, but the lid has fewer parts than that of our top pick, so it is easier to disassemble and hand-wash if you prefer to clean it that way.

And let’s not forget that these things need cleaning regularly. That’s why we also have a bottle-brush recommendation for when you need to clean out the gunk .

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, how we picked, how we tested, our pick: zojirushi sm-sf stainless steel mug (16 ounces), also great: stanley classic trigger-action travel mug (16 ounces), also great: oxo good grips water bottle cleaning set, other good travel mugs, the competition.

We’ve been testing travel mugs since 2013. Previous versions of this guide were written and researched by Séamus Bellamy and Anna Perling. In 2023, staff writer Trey French wrote the latest update to this guide. He gained an appreciation of high-performing insulated drinkware while spring camping in Colorado when the temperatures dropped below freezing.

In addition to conducting our own tests, we spoke to engineers and industry professionals about mug design, ideal coffee and tea drinking temperatures, and the best way to find out how long coffee will really stay good in a travel mug.

Travel mugs, as their name implies, are for people who want to take beverages on the go. Compared with paper or Styrofoam cups, a good travel mug offers better insulation and safeguards against leaks or spills. In addition, you can save money in the long run and reduce your environmental impact by using a travel mug.

Tumblers, thermoses, and insulated water bottles are all close cousins to the travel mug but have some important differences:

  • Tumblers have sipping ports that don’t seal as tightly or securely as on travel mugs and have wider mouths for you to add ice cubes. Many also have straws for you to sip cold beverages.
  • Thermoses usually lack the slim size and lid-design features that make travel mugs portable and convenient. With a thermos, instead of popping open a lid to take a sip, you need to unscrew the cap and pour liquid into an open cup to drink.
  • Insulated water bottles are geared toward keeping drinks cold and don’t have sipping ports like travel mugs do. Instead, they often have screw-top lids that require two hands to open and close, or they have sport caps, which aren’t great for hot drinks.

To determine which travel mugs to test, we look for mugs that advertise the following qualities:

Vacuum-insulated: All of the mugs we consider are double-walled and vacuum-insulated .

Capable of retaining heat all day: We look for mugs that claim to keep hot beverages drinkably warm for at least eight hours.

Made of stainless steel: Stainless steel is more durable than glass or ceramic and retains heat better than plastic. It’s also the best material for vacuum insulation and therefore heat retention.

Leakproof and spill-proof: A leakproof seal keeps a closed lid from leaking if the mug jostles. A spill-proof seal guards against spills should you drop the mug or knock it over; such seals typically incorporate a push button, like the one found on the Stanley Classic Trigger-Action.

Easy to use: A good mug should be easy to both open and close, as well as to lock and unlock, with one hand. It should also be easy to disassemble for cleaning. We look for mugs that advertise these features or have reviews indicating that they are easy to use.

Between 12 and 20 ounces in capacity: We’ve concluded that 16 ounces is the optimal capacity for a travel mug, as it delays the need for a refill while remaining portable and easy to hold. Some people prefer wider mugs that don’t rattle in cup holders, while others like slimmer mugs that take up less space in backpacks or bags. We test both styles.

After considering the everyday wear and tear that a travel mug might go through in real-world scenarios, we devised tests to mimic those scenarios. During our tests, we use the mugs daily, evaluating them for simple enjoyability.

  • Leak and spill tests: We test mugs for leaky seals by shaking them upside down, dropping them, and carrying them in bags.
  • Drop test: We drop each mug three times from a height of 4 feet onto asphalt.
  • Insulation test: We fill each mug with boiling water and then measure how quickly the water cools over eight hours, checking every hour.
  • Ease of cleaning: We wash each mug, following instructions; we also take apart their lids and wash those. We check for lingering smells and to see if the finish on the mug is harmed.
  • Cup holder compatibility: We test the mugs in cup holders of varying sizes (2.75, 3.5, and 3.75 inches in diameter).

A blue Zojirushi SM-SF Stainless Steel Mug.

The 16-ounce Zojirushi SM-SF Stainless Steel Mug is the best travel mug for keeping drinks hot for long periods of time. This mug also comes in a 20-ounce size. (The SM-SF is the current model; these model designations often change from year to year, but the mugs themselves stay the same.)

It kept our drinks the hottest. According to the Specialty Coffee Association of America, the best temperature range for coffee is 145 to 155 degrees Fahrenheit. After sitting for eight hours in the Zojirushi mug in a 72-degree room, our water measured 158 degrees—hotter than in any other mug we tested. That translates to hot coffee over a full workday. (If you’re opening the mug more frequently than once an hour, however, it might cool a bit faster.)

It won’t leak. It has sturdy, leakproof seals and a simple locking mechanism. Just close the lid, switch the lock into position, and you’re guaranteed that the top won’t pop open when you don’t want it to—when you’re carrying the mug in a bag, for instance.

An open lid on the Zojirushi mug.

It’s easy enough to keep clean. The nonstick interior helps to prevent odors and stains, though the mug’s instructions do warn against storing milk or fruit juices in the mug. (If you prefer drinking from a vessel that doesn’t have a nonstick coating, you might consider the Zojirushi SM-KHE , which has an electro-polished stainless steel interior.) The narrow girth makes it hard to get a sponge inside, but using a bottle brush circumvents that problem. You can disassemble the plastic lid to clean out any gunk that might be lodged in hard-to-reach places, although the small plastic and silicone parts can be difficult to get on and off the lid.

The Zojirushi mug laying on its side.

It’s durable. Though this mug developed a few scuffs in our drop tests, it acquired no more than the other mugs we tried, some of which fared far worse. Zojirushi backs the vacuum insulation of its stainless steel mugs with a five-year limited warranty, and the company sells individual replacement parts online .

It’s simple. The Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug has an attractive design that’s minimalist yet eye-catching in its simplicity.  The 20-ounce version comes in only one color (navy), but our pick, the 16-ounce version, comes in three (navy, pale pink, mint blue).

How the Zojirushi mug has held up

The Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug might be the single most commonly owned and used product among Wirecutter staffers; it has traveled in many crowded bags, backpacks, and purses without any problems. One staff member did report that after eight years of use, hers finally developed a leak. Another colleague says that their mug has survived drops onto cement (once from a third-floor balcony) without suffering more than a dent.

Zojirushi specifies hand-washing only, but we know of several mugs that have survived accidental trips through the dishwasher without any noticeable decrease in performance, though the external paint has flaked as a result.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • The Zojirushi mug is sometimes too good at insulating. We’ve found that if we pour fresh coffee directly into the mug, the liquid can stay scalding hot for hours. To prevent burning your mouth, let your beverage cool a little before closing the lid.
  • It’s not cup holder friendly. This model, which is more narrow than a typical travel mug, did not fit snugly in our testers’ car cup holders. If you prefer a travel mug with a larger circumference, check out our also-great pick.
  • It isn’t spill-proof. Though the SM-SF is leakproof, it isn’t spill-proof like our also-great pick; the design lacks an automatic seal to prevent liquid from spilling if you drop the mug while you’re drinking.

A white Stanley Classic Trigger-Action Travel Mug.

The 16-ounce Stanley Classic Trigger-Action Travel Mug is our recommendation for use in a car, as it’s a great spill-proof mug that keeps drinks hot and fits in a cup holder.

It’s designed for drivers. Wider than the Zojirushi mug, this Stanley model fit more securely in our testers’ car cup holders. The top of the mug is narrower than the base, though, to help reduce heat loss through the lid. (Experts told us that the lid is where a double-walled mug loses the most heat.) And the design has no pop-up lid to bump your nose or block your eyes while you’re drinking.

A close-up of the cap of a white Stanley Classic Trigger-Action Travel Mug.

It’s spill-proof, unlike the Zojirushi mug. You do need to hold down a button to keep the sipping port open to drink from the mug, which may be frustrating to some people. However, this design prevents spills—whether from rough roads, say, or if you accidentally knock the mug over while reaching for it—since the mug closes automatically. Other mugs we tested, such as the Contigo Autoseal Transit and West Loop (both former runners-up), had similar buttons, but the button on the Classic Trigger-Action was easier to press and hold. Unlike the Zojirushi model, this mug has no lock to secure its lid, but it never leaked in our tests.

It keeps drinks hot long enough. The Classic Trigger-Action can’t keep your beverages quite as hot for quite as long as our top pick can, but that might be a plus for those who complain that the Zojirushi mug keeps drinks too hot. When we boiled water and let it sit in this Stanley mug, the water took only three hours to cool to 158 degrees (whereas water in the Zojirushi mug took eight hours to reach that temperature). After eight hours, the water in the Classic Trigger-Action measured 132 degrees—26 degrees cooler than the water in the Zojirushi mug. If you drink your beverages quickly or don’t want to wait for them to cool down before sealing your mug, the Classic Trigger-Action may be a better option for you.

It’s tough. This mug endured our drop tests, sporting only light scuffing on the plastic lid and minor dents at the side of the base of its body. Like Zojirushi’s five-year warranty, Stanley’s lifetime warranty covers only manufacturer defects, not damage to mug components due to accidents or wear. Should you damage the lid or simply lose it, you can buy a replacement lid .

It’s dishwasher safe. Both the mug body and the lid can go in the dishwasher. The lid has some hard-to-reach nooks and crannies, so be sure to disassemble it for the best cleaning results. Stanley’s lid has fewer pieces than Zojirushi’s lid and is easier to take apart.

You have more color choices. If you care about colors, the Classic Trigger-Action comes in many—about a dozen at last count. This mug also comes in a 20-ounce size .

The OXO Good Grips Water Bottle Cleaning Set is the best bottle-cleaning set. It comes with a large bottle brush, a skinny straw brush, and a looped detail-cleaning brush, all kept together on a handy ring so you won’t lose any of the parts. The set is dishwasher safe, and we found that it works well for anyone looking to remove gunk from travel mugs and other hard-to-clean items.

A GSI MicroLite 500 Flip travel mug.

If you want a mug with a locking lid for about half the price of our top pick: Consider the GSI Microlite 500 Flip , which keeps liquids almost as hot as the Zojirushi mug and has a similar one-handed flip top with a lock.

However, when we dropped this GSI mug to the ground when the lid was unlocked, the lid popped open and spilled coffee everywhere—and the exact same thing happened when we dropped it a second time. Eventually, we dropped the mug enough, accidentally, to break the lid; GSI does sell replacement lids.

This mug, which has a large sipping port, also has a higher flow rate than our picks, and may require more careful sipping when the beverage is really hot.

An MiiR 360 Traveler.

If the Zojirushi mug is out of stock: You might look into the MiiR 360 Traveler , which in our tests kept drinks almost as hot and resisted denting just as well as our top pick. When it’s unlocked, its sipping port allows you to drink from anywhere on the lid’s circumference. We decided not to make it a pick because we struggled to decipher whether the sipping port was open or closed—which in turn led to spills. Unlike some twist-to-open 360-degree ports, the MiiR 360 Traveler’s lid has a push button for operation that forms the center of the lid, and at a glance, it looks nearly the same whether closed or open.

The mug is also available in a flip-top version called the Flip Traveler , but we’ve found flip-top lids prone to breaking during our drop tests. The mug bodies for the 360 Traveler and the Flip Traveler are the same, and the lids are interchangeable, in case you buy one and then decide that you’d like to try the other.

We’ve considered and evaluated several other Zojirushi travel mugs throughout our testing. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Zojirushi SM-WR : Almost identical to the SM-SF series, this version has an integrated gasket, which reduces the total pieces to clean. We like it almost as much as our top pick. However, it dispenses a little faster than the SM-SF, which is good for cold drinks but can be too much for really hot drinks.
  • Zojirushi SM-YAE : This 16-ounce mug costs a little more than our main pick. It comes with an electro-polished interior, like the Zojirushi SM-KHE, but has a shape that’s stouter than other Zojirushi mugs and short enough to fit under the spout of a single-cup brewing machine. In our tests, however, it fell short of our picks in insulating performance: After eight hours, the water temperature had dropped to 100 degrees, 58 degrees cooler than the water in our top pick.
  • Zojirushi SM-SHE : We were reluctant to test this mug due to persistent stock issues. Zojirushi sent us one to try out anyway, but it broke during our drop test.
  • Zojirushi SM-JHE : We opted not to test this mug because it has a wide-mouth, screw-off lid.
  • Zojirushi SM-JTE : We also elected not to test this model, which has a tea-leaf filter, due to its screw-off lid.

The JoeVeo Temperfect Javabliss 16 Travel Mug brings a scalding drink down to a drinkable temperature and holds it there by using a third layer in its wall to capture excess heat and then release it over time. It isn’t leakproof or spill-proof, though.

The 17-ounce Kinto Travel Tumbler insulates well—so well that it was the third-best contender at insulating in our tests behind the Zojirushi SM-SF and GSI Microlite 500 Flip. Drinking from it requires fully removing the lid, though, as well as finding a place to put the lid.

After dismissing previous iterations of the Hydro Flask travel mug, we tested the 20-ounce Hydro Flask Coffee Cup with Flex Sip Lid , and it was a clear improvement over older models. It kept drinks hot for about a half day, and it resisted denting better than about half of the other tested mugs. The lid requires two hands to open and close, however, so it can be tough to open while you’re distracted, and it has a tendency to “burp” a small amount of liquid when you rotate the lid from closed to open.

The 16-ounce OXO Good Grips Thermal Mug with SimplyClean Lid resembles—and insulates about as well as—the Hydro Flask mug we tested, keeping drinks hot for a half day. It also shares that model’s flaws, requiring two hands to open and close, and burping some liquid.

The Klean Kanteen Insulated Wide Mouth Water Bottle was a previous runner-up in this guide, as well as a former insulated water bottle pick, but we found that the lid occasionally leaked when we left the bottle on its side overnight.

The 18-ounce Purist Mover with Scope Lid insulates nearly as well as our picks and has a 360-degree sip lid, which lets you drink from any side of the mug. It requires two hands to open and close, though.

We broke the flip-top lid of the 20-ounce Welly Traveler , as well as the glued-on product-label plate on the bottom of the mug, the first time we dropped it.

The 12-ounce Ketiee Travel Mug is cheaper than most mugs we looked at, and we wondered what we’d get for the price. It kept drinks hot for about two hours during our tests, scoring near the bottom. Our main complaint is that the molding process left a pointy knob on our test unit, right above the drinking port, that pressed into our testers’ noses. Also, the product page states that it’s spill-proof—and we found that it wasn’t, whether the flip-top lid was open or closed.

The promise of the battery-powered Ember Travel Mug 2 is that it allows you to keep your beverage at a specific temperature (up to 145 degrees) for three hours—if you remember to charge it. Without the battery, it scored at the bottom on our insulation test; we also managed to break its inner seal during our drop test. Although we like the standard Ember Mug 2 (read more in our mug warmers guide ), we can’t recommend this even more expensive sibling.

The Contigo Autoseal West Loop Travel Mug was one of our previous runners-up, and like the Stanley Classic Trigger-Action , it has a button that you need to push before you can drink. The West Loop didn’t hold up as well in our drop tests as the Stanley model did, and we found its vertical push button harder to use than the one on our current also-great pick.

Any mug with a lid that you can carry from place to place is technically a travel mug, but the best travel mugs keep your iced or hot beverage to temperature, won't leak all over your bag, and are easy to keep clean.

We put a dozen of the best travel mugs to the test, evaluating each for how well it retained temperature, how easy it was to clean, and most importantly, how nice it was to drink from. After more than eight months of testing, the Zojirushi SM-SE Travel Mug stood out as the clear winner, keeping drinks to temperature for hours longer than any other mugs we tested. Our other favorites include a large capacity Yeti Rambler that holds 26 ounces of coffee, tea, or anything else you need to travel with in bulk.

Best overall: Zojirushi SM-SE Travel Mug

  • Heat retention: 14 hours
  • Ice retention: 7 hours
  • Leak-proof:  Yes
  • Lid style:  Locking spring-loaded push-button flip top
  • Dishwasher safe: No

Pros: Best temperature retention by far, lid is easy to clean, leak-proof locking lid, one-handed operation, five-year warranty on the vacuum insulation

Cons: Not dishwasher safe, won't fit large ice cubes, will rattle around in cupholders

It's rare that we at Insider Reviews come across a product that is so head and shoulders above the competition that it's without a doubt the best overall pick; there's almost always a shortcoming or a caveat. But the Zojirushi SM-SE Travel Mug is, hands down, the best travel mug you can buy, and we've got the data to back it up.

According to our test, the Zojirushi kept coffee hot for five hours longer than the next-best mug and kept ice frozen for an hour and a half longer than second place. Les Shu, Insider Reviews senior guides editor who helped me with secondary testing, found that it kept liquids hotter far longer if you don't open the lid as often.

The lid flips open to reveal a sizeable drinking spout that regulates liquid well, whether you're pouring it into a cup or your mouth. When closed, a switch at the base of the lid locks it shut so you can confidently toss it in your bag.

The lid disassembles into two plastic pieces and two rubber gaskets, so you can get into all the nooks and crannies as you clean it. It's a skinny mug too, so you'll want to invest in a good bottle brush. Because it's so skinny, you may have trouble fitting large ice cubes into it. It may also rattle around in your car's cupholder. But we're being nitpicky here.

If you want the best travel mug to keep your coffee hot the longest and provide the best drinking experience, this is your pick. Zojirushi also offers a five-year warranty on the vacuum insulation, so if your mug loses its ability to retain temperature, Zojirushi will replace it.

How we tested

In order to test the best travel mugs, we established several criteria we hoped each of our top picks would meet. Our initial testing period lasted one month, but we are still testing long-term durability in case issues arise.

Temperature retention : To test heat retention, we filled each mug with water heated to 136 degrees Fahrenheit, the optimal temperature for hot beverages according to a study by the University of Texas. We then tested the temperature hourly and noted change. Once the temperature dropped 25 degrees, we deemed the beverage too cold to drink and ended the test. To test cold retention, we filled each mug with 45-degree water straight from the refrigerator. We added three ice cubes and timed how long the ice remained frozen.

Leak test: We filled each travel mug with water and turned it upside down and shook it for a total of 30 seconds. We performed this test once at the beginning of our testing period and again at the end to ensure each mug stayed leak-proof even after repeated use.

Ease of use and cleaning : We wanted to test how easy each mug was to drink from while on the go. We noted how easy each mug was to operate with one hand. We also noted how well the liquid flowed out of each and whether or not they fit in standard car cupholders. We took into account how easy each mug was to clean. Many of these mugs have complex lids that can harbor mold if not properly sanitized. If lids were too complicated, difficult to disassemble or reassemble, or began to show signs of mold even after what we thought was a thorough cleaning, the mug lost major points.

This is Obsessed: my weekly column devoted to sharing all the things I'm loving right now—from unique food and gift ideas to travel destinations and beauty products—plus some tips and tricks for living your best life.

I love it when I receive a gift and it's obvious that the person really thought of me before buying it. So when I recently received a birthday present from a sweet friend that made me feel this way (and has also been a great gift that I use every day), I knew I had to share it with you.

My friend bought me a Corkcicle mug that's light blue and covered in white hydrangeas (one of my favorite flowers!). Corkcicle teamed up with Rifle Paper Co. for the adorable and summery design, and it makes me happy every single time I look at it.

Rifle Paper Co. x Corkcicle Coffee Mug

Beyond just being cute, it's also really functional. This 16-ounce mug is triple-insulated to keep coffee or tea hot for up to three hours. I've discovered that it also keeps iced coffee and cocktails chilly for just as long, and it's the perfect vessel for bringing on all of your summer adventures since it has a lid that you can remove completely, or open or shut to sip from. Bonus: It's dishwasher-safe and very durable (read: you won't break it if you constantly knock over mugs like I do).

Corkcicle also makes a 16-ounce tumbler in the same design that would be perfect for commuting to work, since it can fit right in your car's cup holder. And if you want to skip straight to cocktails, there's a super-fun stemless wine tumbler that would be perfect for pool days or al fresco drinks.

Rifle Paper Co. x Corkcicle Tumbler

Rifle paper co. x corkcicle stemless tumbler.

Whichever design you pick, you really can't go wrong. And while these insulated cups make perfect gifts for friends or family, I definitely wouldn't blame you if you decided to stock up on a few for yourself.
