The alternator recharges the battery to restore power that is depleted during starting and keeps the electrical accessories on your car powered while it is running. The alternator is driven by the engine belt and may be controlled by the engine computer or voltage regulator to prevent overcharging. Over time, the internal windings and brushes of the alternator can wear out or become contaminated with grease or oil, and this can keep the alternator from producing adequate voltage for recharging or operation. When the alternator loses capacity or fails, the electrical systems of your vehicle will only stay on until the battery's reserve charge has been depleted. Your car might die, but you might be able to restart it with a jump start or by recharging the battery to park somewhere safe. If you notice that your headlights dim when using your power windows, or if your battery just won't stay fully charged, it may be time to replace your alternator or other charging system parts. Alternator Questions - 2003 Excursion 6.8L V10 - Eddie Bauer

On going alternator / charging / electrical issues. A few questions. 1. Correct AMP for the 2003 6.8L V10? 110, 115 or 130? Most replacements are 110 but I've read where all 6.8 V10's should have at least 130. I have the Eddie Bauer edition if that makes a difference. 2. Wiring Harness - Battery - Is there an upgraded / aftermarket wiring harness you'd recommend? 3. Wiring Harness - Alternator - Is there an upgraded / aftermarket wiring harness you'd recommend? Back story - 110 amp & battery replaced 12 months ago. No issues until now. 2 days ago, ABS light appears, AC blower slows, gauges stop working, engine surges/stalls. Believed the problem was a faulty voltage regulator on the alternator. Replaced alternator (only remanufactured available at the auto store) & charged the battery. Today, 50 mile trip, truck runs fine in the AM. Returning home, same issues - ABS light, instrument cluster goes dead, AC blower is minimal, engine stalls when giving it gas. Pulled over, engine quit, no electricity to the vehicle. Battery is dead. $325 towing bill home. Possibilities - another bad alternator, will pull it and have it checked tomorrow. bad wires? they are original so I'd like to replace them but can not find a direct match, hence asking for help. Thanks in advance.  

Having additional load power never hurts as long as the wires are protected with the proper fuses. Having an under powered alternator can cause other problems, such as yours. I saw 110 and 130 amp alternators for that particular engine; however, you may be on to something with the wiring, If your connections are corroded, the added resistance load could put a false load on the alternator, including the battery terminals. 6 gauge wire should be able to handle up to 200 amps, 6 gauge for 110.

This is a private party sale of our 2003 4x4 6.0 Diesel, 11 Passenger Eddie Bauer Ford Excursion with 155,000 miles We recently had half of the injectors replaced and everything works perfectly. These 6.0's are great except for the injectors, which if you have to do them are costly. Thankfully we just did them for you! Just look at all the listings on here for this same truck with 250k+ on Ebay, this is an amazing vehicle. We added a custom DOT approved 4th row seat that brings the passenger count to 11. (Yes it goes to 11).  It also comes with our extra set of excursion specific wheels for snow tires, so you don't have to pay to have your winter tires switched between rims every season. Has the factory tow package plus added trailer brakes with multi-port trailer connectors. Comes with an SCT tuner and installed chip. This allows you to boost mileage or performance depending on your application. We have used it to get better mileage (diesels are already better than gassers, but this brings it up even higher). We have only used the truck to tow a couple times, but the truck barely notices when a boat or trailer is attached, lots and lots of power. Has newer brakes and ball joints. Ford unveiled today the S-Max Concept, which comes with a new, sleek look and loaded with innovative technology, such as a heart-rate monitoring seat. But if you're heart is set on a minivan sports activity vehicle (SAV) and you live in the States, don't wait for this one - it's a Europe-only product, and we don't expect that to change when the next-gen S-Max is released. The styling follows Ford's global design language, looking a bit like an overgrown Focus hatchback with the company's signature grille, wraparound headlamps, steeply raked windshield and curved roof line. Ford also implemented details to make the S-Max look longer and faster, such as a feature line on each side of the vehicle and muscular-looking fenders. The engine isn't Ford's most powerful, but the new 1.5-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine should be potent enough with turbocharging and other efficiency related technologies. Ford recalls 83k Taurus and crossover models for halfshaft issue

Ford and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have issued a recall for some 83,250 vehicles in the US, for an issue with halfshafts. More specifically a "halfshaft retention circlip" might not have been properly installed on affected vehicles, with the result being halfshafts that may move improperly or disengage completely from the linkshaft while driving. The NHTSA release also notes that the issue may occur "without prior warning" which obviously factors in to the timeliness of getting this checked. Should the halfshaft disengage, a few troubling things could happen. If it occurs while driving, power from the engine will no longer be transmitted to the wheels. And, if the vehicle is parked without the parking brake applied after disengagement of the circlip, vehicles may roll away even if they're transmissions have been placed in "Park." Affected vehicles are as follows: Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX crossovers from model years 2012 to 2014; Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS sedans from model years 2013 to 2014; Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT vehicles from model years 2013 to 2014.

Former Ford CEO Alan Mulally lands on Google board

Former Ford CEO Alan Mulally often referred to the Blue Oval as a technology company when he led the automaker. Now he'll be offering guidance to a different kind of technology firm: Google. Mulally was appointed to Google's board of directors July 9, and late Tuesday, it was announced that he will serve on the company's audit committee. The veteran executive led Ford from September 2006 until he retired in June, succeeded by Mark Fields. While Mulally will act as a board member - rather than in a managerial role - his presence adds credibility to Google's recently announced plans to produce an autonomous car. The ambitious program calls for 100 prototypes to begin testing later this summer. Production of the car is rumored to be in collaboration with a Detroit area performance company, Roush.
