Varawal Camp Host - Pushpendra Singh Ranawat

A Message from Host -

I believe in serving wildlife and nature. If I am allowed to live on earth, the wildlife should too. My family has a long history of association with Leopards of Bera. While, they used to hunt them, I believe in preserving them. I have a staff well-trained in all required activities and I personally take care of everything when YOU are here. All these years I have been keenly observing & studying the Leopards behavior and have gained recognition as a naturalist. It is unethical, if we run a wildlife camp without focus on conservation of animals & the environment.

On your stay here at Varawal, I can lay claim to the fact that the experience my team and place offers, will be among the best one of your life. I have had guests in the past who didn’t want to leave this place. Varawal is a place for true nature-lover, it is for people who are looking for peace with a little adventure and an entirely different experience. Come and get a new perspective towards life, while unravelling the beauty and stories of the big cats here!

VARAWAL is a village which has always been the epicentre of all Leopard spotting in Jawai & Bera Leopard reserve of Rajasthan. The Camp is run by the Decedent’s of MAHARANA PRATAP’s (13th King of Mewar and Great Hindu warrior) fourth Son, Rana Sekha who was given entitlement of village BERA. Varawal is the last partition from BERA. In 1949, Title of “THAKUR of VARAWAL Village” (Landlord) was granted to the current owner's grandfather. The camp is located on a private farm of 120 acres near Jawai Dam & Bera which lies in between Udaipur & Jodhpur. We envisioned a home away from home and started this camp in the year 2013. We offer 5 a/c luxury self-contained Swiss tents furnished with all amenities required for your comfortable stay. The tents are cosy and ideal for a wildlife holiday.

History of Jawai Bandh

Is Jawai Bandh Safe for wildlife Safari ?

leopard safari in udaipur

While juggling between various staying options in Varawal/Beda, I had a hunch that Varawal leopard camp would not disappoint, and our 3 night stay proved to be just that. The camps are set in a big open farm land, which gives them the,"Far from the madding crowd," feel. We saw Leopards in their habitat along with a Hyena and a whole lot of birds.

On our special request, we went for spotting the, "Eagle Owls'', which were resting camouflaged on a tree at the top of a granite hill.As a bonus we also got to see a 5 feet "Python."We also went for a village safari, where we got to interact with the tribals and know about their life style -it was educative. The dare devil Off-roading on the Granite hills gave us an adrenaline rush. Breakfast by the Jawai Dam, overlooking the huge water body and scenic surroundings was well conducted.

After doing a lot of research on this place we finally chose Varawal Leopard Camp amongst the others which are set in this small hamlet called Bera.Well,I can now say that I have no regrets on chosing this particular camp.Never Imagined that life could be so thrilling n adventurous when we were driven through the rustic terrain of bera.

After a long wait we finally got to see a two n hlf yrs old young leopard cub-Hira.We were just too very entralled to see the great predator. In our morning safari we were fortunate to witness hyenas, desert fox, peacocks, deer. They even drove us to another place where he was informed about some leopard sightings. Hence, lovely tents with all modern facilities, authentic Rajasthani cuisine, warm hospitality and experiencing the most thrilling adventure of your life of witnessing leopards-that's wat Varawal Leopard Camp is about.

Varawal Leopard Camp is Excellent place to stay.A small village name Varaval surround by lava rocks of Aravalli Hills, classic landscape . Lava Rocks with caves present here provide a perfect habitat for leopards, hyena, jungle cat, Indian grey mongoose etc.

We welcome by our host Rajeshwari Ranawat (BaiSa).,lovely tents with all modern facilities, authentic Rajasthani cuisine, warm hospitality and experiencing the most thrilling adventure of your life of witnessing leopards-that's what Varawal Leopard Camp is about..

Once We arrived into Varawal Leopard Camp we were greeted by Mr. Pushpendra Singh Ranawat. We stay there for four nights and undertook 9 safaris. We literally saw every wild animal including the famous Leopard, Hyena, Sloth bear,Egale Owl, Crocodile, Neelgai, chinkara, wild boar and peacock. It was really more than what we expected to see.

I noticed that Mr. Pushpendra has an impressive ability to spot animals way in the distance up in the rocky hills. Thank you Mr. Pushpendra and his team for this incredible experience.

Which is the best time to spot leopards?

Thanks to the hilly region and plains in Jawai, spotting a leopard is possible throughout the year. However, if you want to maximize the probability, then plan your tour between the month of September and March. Leopard safari is conducted twice in a day i.e. morning and evening. You can spot the leopards in both the time slots that could be chosen as per your preference.

What our guests say

I always prefer places that are not in the urban centres and owner driven. Bera Safari Lodge is a perfect combination of both. Shatrunjay has not only hit the nail on the head with what he's created but his entire operation along with his staff at the property and on the field are great. Being in hospitality and travel myself, I can't appreciate this place enough.

I am a tough critic, but this place was just great. middle of nowhere in india. given where it is located, the minimal resources available, i was so surprised to find this place so comfortable. the home cooked indian food was to die for — honestly… and the staff…. so nice, helpful, approachable and knowledgable. the safari side = even better, we stayed here for 3 nights. the staff, its owner, their hospitality is too much to mention. really i can not find one single thing that i did not like or this should be the extra ordinary amount of high quality food. shatunray and its staff are really naturist and are committed in preventing the area to change due to tourists requirements and profit driven companies. relax, enjoy and interact with other quests is their device. really a lovely place, a pity to leave. hope we can come back., one can't say enough about bera safari lodge and the experience it offers. let me try. nestled in rocky, almost dry-scrubland, the lodge itself is an oasis of calm - simple, home-cooked food, proudly served by attentive staff in rabari costume, simply furnished but uber functional and comfortable rooms, and dining under the stars. ruturaj patil, the camp manager, his assistant, pawan, and their crew took us on two fascinating game drives. we saw leopards on both occasions, as well as some very tough country. they know the area intimately - not just the animals but the people too. friendship was instantly kindled. their competence, kindness, warmth, and hospitality knew no bounds. an outstanding experience from start to finish - a big thank you to everyone at the lodge.

leopard safari in udaipur

Embark on a journey which takes you through the magical land of Jawai, a place where the eccentric behavior of the leopards will surprise you to the core. And then get ready to experience the charming city of ‘lakes & palaces’ – Udaipur!

Also called as the ‘Venice of the East’ every corner of the city has the story from the heroics of the Mewar Kingdom with it’s beautiful palaces, temples & lakes.

leopard safari in udaipur

Day 1: Arrive in Udaipur and transfer to Jawai.

Arrive in Udaipur, the ‘Venice of the East’ and transfer your private vehicle to Jawai, about a 3-hour drive from the airport. Arrive at your wildlife resort and check in comfortably.

Post lunch, get ready for your first wilderness drive to track the Leopards. The 4×4 jeeps will take you through the granite hills of Jawai. Our expert field naturalist will guide you through the history of Jawai and make you acquainted with the unique animal behavior of the place.

Return to the hotel for dinner.

Day 2 & 3: Morning & Afternoon Wilderness Drives

We will spend our days in Jawai by two wilderness drives each day – one with a break of dawn and one in the evening which will end with sunset. The drives will be approximately 2-3 hours where you may visit the nearby villages to interact with the locals and even visit their homes between the drives.

On any one of the days, we can also arrange for a trek to the nearby hill to witness the sunrise. A picnic sundowner to end a successful day in the bush will be arranged alongside the Jawai Dam where migratory birds and crocodiles are easily spotted.

The nights will end with bush dinners or campfire dinners as per your convenience.

Jawai will never stop to amuse you; and just when you feel you have experienced everything there was to experience, it may surprise you with something, something new to wonder upon.

Day 4: Check-out and transfer by surface to Udaipur.

Start your day early with a last and final morning safari. Post breakfast, check-out and reach Udaipur right in time for lunch.

Your hotel will be on the banks of Lake Pichola so you can enjoy the beauty of the place at all times. Lunch will be served at the hotel post which we head out to explore the islands of Lake Pichola.

The Lake has four islands – Jag Mandir, Jag Niwas, Mohan Mandir & Arsi Vilas Island. All of them have beautiful temples from ancient times, palaces & marble residences.

We also visit the ‘Havelis’ (mansions) near the lake , which were once the residence of people of high ranks. The ‘Bagore ki Haveli’ houses a museum and conducts a cultural show every evening , which can be visited.

The evening ends with a champagne sundowner arranged on the banks of the lake.

Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 5: Exploring Udaipur!

We start our day with breakfast at the hotel and then a full day of exploring Udaipur to its roots. We start with Hathi Pol Bazaar to indulge in some shopping and then to the old city’s lanes that tell us the tales of the bygone era. We pass through Udaipur’s lesser visited narrow lanes, past ‘Havelis’ mansions and shrines, revealing stories of folk deities and fabled heroes along the way.

Udaipur has been a prominent city since its inception and was always at the helm of spirituality. A visit to the famous temples of the city will evoke the spirituality within you and connect you to the soul.

In the evening, we pay a visit to the City Palace Udaipur. The royal palace is located on the banks of Lake Pichola. The 450-year-old palace will mesmerize you with its soaring towers and silver-crowned cupolas to the grand gates and glittering terraces.

As you stroll through the series of courtyards, corridors, pavilions, and palaces, you can see intricate mosaics and ornate murals around every corner, relax in exotic hanging gardens, and reflect in tranquil temples filled with stunning statues.

Post a full day exploration, we will return to the hotel for a private romantic dinner.

While this brings an end to the journey, you will always want to come back to the city of Udaipur for its spellbinding charm, romance and cultural history.

Day 6: Transfer to Udaipur Airport for onward departure.

Check-out and depart post – breakfast towards the airport. Udaipur is well connected with all the major destinations in India for your onward journey.

Trip Extension

Add two nights in Jaipur (closest Airport) to make the journey even more exciting and get a chance to adore the royalty of the state capital visiting the century – old palace, forts, markets and museums.

Castle bera

Jawai has acclaimed worldwide recognition for its unique ecosystem. Here, humans and leopards live together without invading each other’s land.

Leopards in the Jawai region house in natural caves shaped by lava millions of years ago.

They eat cattle and sheep from the many herds here and have adopted a lifestyle where they do not need to hurt anyone to survive.

Amazingly, there hasn’t been a single case of misconduct by leopards in the past hundred years in this region.

Leopards roam freely here without any worries, which is a jackpot for any wildlife enthusiast.

Other than this, the unvegetated terrain of Jawai with rocky outcrops leaves no room for the leopards to camouflage.

Hence, making leopard-spotting very easy and accessible here.

What a lovely, charming, intelligent and knowledgeable guide! Surely the best in Udaipur. Chinmay (or ‘CD’ as he is happy to be abbreviated to) is a warm presence as soon as you are introduced. He took us to the ancient Hindu temple and informatively explained the culture and background to the religion as well as the wonderful features there. We moved to the palace and fort and he was again fab - selective with what he focused but massively informative and fun to be guided by. His English is excellent too. After a visit to the beautiful gardens - a real oasis in the new city area - he treated us to a drink at a nearby cafe (excellent chai tea - my wife said probably the best she’s had so far in India). We finished with a private boat tour of the lake and then he guided us through a perfect shopping experience! Nothing seemed too much for him to offer and he was charm personified to the end. We chatted a lot about politics, reality and life in general as we walked and he was spot on and interesting as well as interested. Fortunately we discover similar views too! A great guide and lovely person. Read more Written February 10, 2024

Searching for Rajasthan’s Leopards – Jawai Leopard Safari Review

Jawai, located in the heart of Rajasthan is leopard country – and if you want to see more of India’s beautiful wildlife or spotting a big cat is on your “bucket list”, you won’t want to miss going on a Jawai leopard safari. Find out about the work that is ongoing to conserve space for the leopards and how to choose a responsible place to stay on your Jawai safari.

Welcome to Leopard Country

It’s 8.30am on a Sunday morning early in December. A large, male leopard stares nonchalantly from his rocky outpost as the Ahmedabad passenger express train trundles past on the railway line below.

This is leopard country. In the heart of central Rajasthan, in the beautiful Aravalli hills dotted between Udaipur and Jodhpur, I’ve come to the best place in the world to see Leopards (in the wild).

This is the new relationship paradigm between humans and leopards. Leopards are known for their adaptability and ability to survive in even the most urban of environments in India’s mega-cities , but here, at Jawai at least they have been afforded hard-fought for protection.

I’d come to Jawai to stay at Bera Safari Lodge and meet its owner, Shatrunjay Pratap Singh, who has been the driving force behind Leopard conservation in Jawai for over the last decade.

The Leopard Cause

When you think of big-cat conservation in India, Project Tiger probably springs to mind. Efforts in India – and in Madhya Pradesh (Central India) particularly – to increase the populations of Bengal Tigers have seen a lot of success. But the Leopard, to a large extent, has not received the same attention.

In India, as people and development have spread, the Leopard has become a success story at adapting to its human surroundings, but it’s not without its problems. Given the relative prevalence of the Leopard in (semi) urban areas, it has not been awarded the same prestigious status as its larger, striped brother.

Safeguarding land to retain as protected habitat for Leopards has been even more of a struggle than it has been for the tiger. Statistics report that for every single tiger death in India, there are six leopard deaths, making this beautiful cat highly vulnerable and in need of more protection.

The difference is that a Leopard’s death does not make headlines, a tiger’s does.

In central Rajasthan, the desert scrub and rocky outcrops of Jawai make for the perfect leopard territory, but even that has had to be clawed back from the jaws of industry.

The owners of Bera Safari Lodge have been leading the fight against mining in Jawai for over a decade. As a direct result of their work with the local Panchayyat (village assembly) and government at different levels, the forests of Jawai Bandh were awarded the status of conservation reserve in 2013, and mining was banned in 2015.

The threat of mining remains, as profit hungry companies continue to eye the area for its rich quarry, and so the fight to keep the miners out and the leopards protected is endless.

But since the mining ban, Bera is the only area of Rajasthan to have seen a significant recovery in leopard population.

Jawai Leopard Safari Trips

A highlight of any trip to Rajasthan should be a visit to Bera Safari Lodge and the chance to go on their Jawai leopard safaris. Similar to safaris in India’s national parks, the lodge offers 2 safaris per day: Morning and Sunset.

Your chances of seeing a leopard while on safari here are the highest of anywhere in the world, thanks to the recovering leopard population here. Thanks to the rocky terrain, safaris can be done in a way that are not intrusive to the leopards, either, as the leopards have plenty of space to retreat to on the rocks, where the safari gypsy’s (jeeps) don’t go.

Leopards are nocturnal creatures, hunting between dusk and dawn, with the best time to see them being when they are leaving their caves in the evening around sunset, or coming back to them in the early morning.

I was lucky enough to see Leopards on both my morning and evening safaris, but there is an undeniable magic to heading out in the morning darkness, in the brisk air of winter just as the light starts to creep in, with no idea what you’ll find. There are also far fewer jeeps out in the morning, meaning you get the best of the leopard sightings pretty much to yourself.

The best way to go organise a Jawai leopard safari is through your lodge in Bera. There are also operators who offer just evening safaris if you are not staying in the area, but these give you much less of the full Leopard safari experience, and I recommend staying in the area at a lodge instead for 1-2 nights and doing a leopard safari that way.

Staying at Bera Safari Lodge

If you’re looking for a Jawai leopard safari lodge to stay at, look no further than Bera Safari Lodge . Not only are they the pioneers of leopard conservation in Bera, but they’re also the best hosts with a total of just 5 luxury cottages nestled among the rocky desert landscapes of Jawai.

The cottages feature some of the most comfortable beds I’ve stayed in and panoramic windows that frame the mountains and landscape – if you’re really lucky, you might just get to see a leopard from your bed (it has happened).

The lodge itself is an extension of the rugged wild landscape, with cottages dotted around the grounds for both privacy and the feeling of being out in the wild. Over 30 different species of bird can be observed at the lodge, with hundreds more at Jawai Bandh (dam) just a few miles to the north.

One of the best moments of the day is gathering around the camp fire after your evening safari to exchange sighting stories with fellow guests, learn more about leopard conservation from the owners, and gaze up at the incredible view of the stars (the skies are dark out here thanks to the absence of light pollution from cities).

Food at the lodge is delicious and all home cooked with the use of local veggies grown by neighbouring farmers and eggs from chickens reared on site.

Above all, staying at Bera Safari Lodge is a direct chance to contribute to the conservation of leopards in the area by supporting the ongoing work to safeguard this land for the leopards.

Why go on a Leopard Safari in Rajasthan?

The chance to go on a leopard safari in Bera through a conservation-focused lodge such as Bera Safari Lodge is a truly unique experience, and one that directly enables the ongoing conservation work in protecting the leopard.

Despite the lack of headline interest around the leopard, it is estimated that India has already lost between a whopping 75-90% of its leopards over the last 200 years.

For that trend to be halted, we need to support conservation through methods such as tourism, which help to prove a direct economic value to safeguarding leopards.

As some tiger reserves in India become over-crowded with shutter-hungry visitors eager for a snap, Jawai remains largely crowd-free, and is an experience that is off the beaten track as well as positive impact when done through a responsible tourism focused operator.

Check availa bility and enquire with Bera Safari Lodge for accommodation & safaris here!

Additional Info

Leopard Safari Jawai is a unique experience. Staying in one of India’s remote Village Bera surrounded by Rocky hills inhabited by Leopards.

Even though this is a short offbeat tour, we still operate it at an easy pace that we believe is necessary for good wildlife watching and photography.

We will spend most of the time especially early mornings and late evenings tracking leopards in the rocky terrain of Jawai Bera Region.

Unlike a Typical Safari in National Park, this may require us to walk a little if needed, wait in the vehicle sometimes or sit under a tree on a small cliff waiting for the leopard to emerge on the opposite cliff. This place is unlike any other you may have visited. It’s truly offbeat.

The Local Rabari people who live in this region are mostly cattle, goat herders. They with their distinct attire of white dress and red turbans graze the animals in the same hills where the leopards live.

There is a strange relation between man and beast and fortunately in the last few decades no man or animal has harmed each other.

A tour with us to this hidden jewel will give you the opportunity to explore and know the place and its inhabitants.

The focus is on Indian Leopard

Apart from Leopard, we also have a variety of other animals and birds.

Leopard, Hyena, Sloth Bear, Mongoose, Neelgai, Monkey etc. Lot of Birds.

About our Photography Tour

Our Photography Tour is Designed for an outstanding wildlife watching & photography experience.

All our tours operate at an Easy pace that we believe is necessary for good wildlife watching and photography. Thus we give more time at each place, instead of hopping around from place to place. Wildlife in our experience requires time and patience.

Each tour itinerary is simple and needs minimum travel outside the forest. We spend the maximum time possible on safari watching and photographing wildlife.

A tour with us will allow you to explore and know the place and its inhabitants.

Private Guided Tour

All our tours (unless mentioned) are private guided tours with a very tiny group of nature lovers. The average group size is usually 2 or 3 people and not more than 4.

Advantages To Photographers

Beginners or Amateur Photographers can learn a lot in the field from the accompanying wildlife photographer. They can also gain a lot of in-the-field insight and practical tips about wildlife photography and animal behavior.

Professional photographers benefit from the experience of the accompanying photographer about the place and the wildlife. This improves the chances of a great photograph by being in the right place and position.

Camera Equipment

For photography, a good camera with a telephoto lens of 500 or 600mm or even 800mm with convertors is ideal. Leopards here are easy to track, but usually at a distance, so a big lens is always a needed.

Also keep a short lens in range 200mm handy. Sometimes they can get close, especially in the evenings, when they walk around the area for food.

Best Time For Wildlife

We understand that the Best possible time to watch & photograph wildlife is the early mornings and late evenings when animal activity is at its highest, and the soft golden light creates great images. Hence, we enter the forest as soon as the park gates open in the morning and stay late in the evening before the park gate closes.

Safari Timings vary in each park depending on the seasons and the park officials. The morning safari starts around sunrise or earlier and the afternoon safari ends around sunset.

What To Expect

In the parks, there are two safaris or game drives in each day. One in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Also, we book the best zones/areas of the park to maximize our chances.

This will give plenty of opportunities to watch & photograph a lot of animals in the park.

Who Can Join This Tour?

Any person interested in seeing or photographing wildlife of the park, along with 1 or 2 other like-minded people.

How To Reach?

All our tours are close to an Airport and railway station. Most of them have daily flights/trains from Delhi/Mumbai.

Nearest Airport

Udaipur City

From Delhi/Mumbai, you can take the overnight train or Flight.

The Cost for everyone on the tour is the same, whether they are a photographer or not, including their spouse or friend.

The Cost for foreigners is higher than that for Indians.
