The Tour de Pologne UCI WorldTour has been a worldwide event for many years. The seven days race, has excellent organization, the biggest stars at the start line and great sporting emotions have made the race known, watched and respected in every corner of the globe. 

One of the country’s most popular and prestigious events, the Tour de Pologne, is turning 95 years old in 2023, and the Lang Team, in its 30th year at the helm of the race and is preparing to celebrate an 80th edition full of anniversaries that will travel through history to evoke the spirit of an event that has narrated Poland for almost a hundred years.

Tour de Pologne generates interest all over the world. Broadcasts and coverage of the race reach up to more than 100 countries each year, and far beyond Europe.The USA, Canada, China, New Zealand, the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East or North America – it is difficult to find a place on the map where the Tour de Pologne would not leave its mark.

95 lat temu ruszył pierwszy wyścig kolarski Tour de Pologne

95 lat temu, 7 września 1928 r., rozpoczął się pierwszy wyścig kolarski Tour de Pologne. „Jest to jedna z najstarszych cyklicznych polskich imprez sportowych, która doszła do poziomu światowego. Jesteśmy na szczycie, tam gdzie rozgrywane jest Tour de France czy Giro d'Italia” – powiedział PAP Czesław Lang.

Idea organizacji narodowego wyścigu kolarskiego pojawiła się kilka lat po odzyskaniu przez Polskę niepodległości. Sport był ważnym elementem kształtowania postaw w II Rzeczpospolitej. Kolarstwo w tym procesie było szczególne skuteczne – peleton jechał wśród ludzi, odwiedzał miasta i wsie, był na wyciągnięcie ręki dla każdego, kto chciał wyjść na ulicę i obserwować zmagania zawodników.

Pionierami w promowaniu kolarstwa w naszym kraju było Warszawskie Towarzystwo Cyklistów (istniejące od 1886 r.) oraz redakcja "Przeglądu Sportowego". W 1928 r. rozegrano I Kolarski Bieg dookoła Polski. O randze imprezy świadczy fakt, że patronem honorowym wyścigu został prezydent Ignacy Mościcki, a przewodniczącym Komitetu Honorowego Marszałek Józef Piłsudski.

7 września 1928 r., z warszawskiego toru na Dynasach, wyruszyło 71 kolarzy. Liczącą 1491 km trasa podzielona została na osiem etapów i wiodła przez: Lublin, Lwów, Rzeszów, Kraków, Poznań, Łódź i kończyła się w stolicy. Sześć etapów i cały wyścig wygrał zawodnik Bydgoskiego Klubu Kolarskiego Feliks Więcek.

"Zarówno wyniki sportowe biegu, jak i całość prac organizacyjnych, a nade wszystko duch zawodników – wszystko to otworzyło przed sportem polskim horyzonty, o których marzyli tylko szaleńcy sportowi. Półtora tysiąca kilometrów szos polskich, przez które przelecieli w ciągu 10 dni bohaterscy kolarze – to jakby wielka wstęga, zespalająca najpotężniejsze ośrodki naszego życia kulturalnego, społecznego, gospodarczego i sportowego w jedną wielką solidarną i przez to potężną całość" – napisano po wyścigu w "Przeglądzie Sportowym".

W dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym Tour de Pologne cieszyło się dużą popularnością. Rozegrano pięć wyścigów. Na starcie pojawiali się zawodnicy zagraniczni. Tysiące ludzi dopingowało zawodników na trasach kolejnych wyścigów. Najbardziej znanymi zawodnikami byli Feliks Więcek i Bolesław Napierała, nazywany "tygrysem szos", który wygrał Tour de Pologne dwa razy.

Rowery sportowe z lat 30. różniły się od używanych dziś. Kolarze na trasie osiągali średnią prędkość ok. 25 km/h, a etapy miały przeważnie długość 150 – 250 km. Nie wożono bidonów i batonów, zamiast tego zatrzymywano się na zjedzenie posiłku.

"Jest to jedna z najstarszych polskich imprez sportowych. 95. urodziny i 80. wyścig rozegrany w tym roku. Cyklicznych imprez typowo polskich, które doszły do poziomu światowego, nie mamy tak dużo. Jesteśmy na szczycie w tej dyscyplinie - tam gdzie rozgrywane jest Tour de France czy Giro d'Italia. Należymy do cyklu World Tour" – powiedział PAP wicemistrz olimpijski i organizator Tour de Pologne Czesław Lang.

Po zakończeniu II wojny światowej, pierwszy wyścig Tour de Pologne rozegrano w 1947 r. Trasa miała długość 600 km i została podzielona na cztery etapy. W nowych realiach politycznych, przedwojenne tradycje tej imprezy okazały się brzemieniem. Komunistyczne władze Polski zaczęły faworyzować swoje nowe kolarskie dziecko – "Wyścig Pokoju", rozgrywany od 1948 roku.

Tour de Pologne nie dawał jednak za wygraną. W kolejnych latach na trasach wyścigu zaczęli coraz licznej pojawiać się kolarze z zagranicy. W 1948 r. dwa etapy wygrał Szwed Olle Persson. Rok później całe podium zajęli obcokrajowcy, a wyścig zdominował Włoch Francesco Locatelli.

W 1953 r. odbył się najdłuższy wyścig w historii. Jubileuszowy, 10. Tour de Pologne, liczył 13 etapów o łącznej długości 2311 km.

W latach 1954-57 liderem klasyfikacji był Marian Więckowski, który wygrał Tour de Pologne trzy razy z rzędu.

W kolejnych latach na trasach Tour de Pologne pojawiali się najlepsi polscy kolarze, a także coraz więcej nazwisk zagranicznych. W 1960 r. zwyciężył Belg Roger Diercken, którego wyższość musieli uznać Stanisław Królak i Jan Kudra. Ten drugi odegrał się w 1962 r., kiedy to okazał się lepszy od innego znakomitego Belga Rogera Swertsa. W 1968 r. na starcie Tour de Pologne pojawił się Ryszard Szurkowski. Startował aż do 1984 r., wygrał w sumie 15 etapów, ale ani razu nie udało mu się zwyciężyć w całym wyścigu.

Lista czołowych zawodników, którzy nie mieli szczęścia w Tour de Pologne, jest dłuższa - Stanisław Królak, Lech Piasecki, Zenon Jaskuła, Joachim Halupczok. Na drugim biegunie znaleźli się trzykrotni zwycięzcy wyścigu Andrzej Mierzejewski (1982, 1984, 1988) oraz Dariusz Baranowski (1991, 1992, 1993).

W 1989 r. Tour de Pologne znalazł się na ostrym zakręcie. Nowa rzeczywistość stawiała nowe wyzwania, które w pierwszych latach transformacji doprowadził wyścig do trudnej sytuacji finansowej i organizacyjnej. W 1993 r. podupadającą imprezę uratował Czesław Lang i na kolejne lata stał się jej organizatorem.

"Od 30 lat organizuję tę imprezę w nowej formule. Cieszę się, że my Polacy mamy taki wyścig, że wspólnymi siłami doprowadziliśmy go do grona najważniejszych kolarskich wyścigów świata" – powiedział Lang. "Od strony sportowej kolarstwo niesie wiele emocji i radości, ale też zachęca młodych ludzi do aktywnego relaksu, uprawiania sportu i rywalizacji. Od kilkunastu lat organizujemy też Tour de Pologne junior, do którego zapraszamy dzieci i młodzież" – dodał.

"Tour de Pologne niesamowicie promuje Polskę i pokazuje jak ona się zmienia na przestrzeni lat. Tegoroczny – na żywo i w relacjach medialnych – obejrzało około 4 milionów ludzi" – podkreślił Lang.

"Żyjemy szybko, w czasach +tu i teraz+, w internetowym świecie, który potrafi wypromować imprezę w kilka tygodni, mimo to nasze 95 lat tradycji jest rzeczą cenną i ważną. To bardzo interesuje młodych ludzi. Dbamy o tradycje, przypominany historię Tour de Pologne, a także nazwiska czołowych zawodników, np. Szurkowski, Szozda, Królak, Więckowski, Piasecki. This year the Tour de Pologne celebrates three anniversaries: 95 years since its foundation, the 80th edition of the race and 30 years of the Lang Team. To mark the occasion, the organizers have designed an unprecedented route running through the west of Poland. The now traditional seven stages will be as follows: one time trial stage, two mountain stages, two stages for sprinters and two hilly stages where both classic riders and riders aiming for the general classification will be able to compete. All the ingredients for a great spectacle that will set Poland’s roads ablaze from 29th July to 4th August.

On 4 August the peloton will cover almost 167 kilometres from Zabrze to Kraków, where the race traditionally ends.  The finish line will be in Kraków’s Błonia after the riders have completed three laps of the circuit on the city’s streets. Before arriving in Kraków, there will be the LOTTO Intermediate Finish in Wilamowice, the cat-3 PZU KOMs in Witanowice and Kaszów, and the Special Sprint SOUDAL – 95 Years of the Tour de Pologne in Budzyń. Finally, the podium ceremony for the protagonists of the 80th Tour de Pologne will take place in Krakow’s Błonia.

Last year it was British rider Ethan Hayter, Ineos Grenadiers, who won the general classification ahead of Dutchman Thymen Arensman and Spaniard Pello Bilbao.

Błonia Common (besides the Vistula embankments and Planty Garden Ring) is the locals’ favourite place for walking and relaxing among nature. Covering 48 ha (120 acres), the Common is just 15 minutes’ walk from the Main Market Square. For centuries it served mostly as pasture until the Cracovia Hotel opened in 1965, and cow grazing was banned. Currently, it is a popular place for festivals, meetings, and concerts. The expanse commands a beautiful view of the Lasek Wolski Forest and the Kościuszko Mound. Situated within it are the Józef Piłsudski Memorial Boulder and the Papal Stone, commemorating great Poles.

Initially, the Błonia Common was a property of the Premonstratensian Order, yet in 1366 the nuns did a swap with the city, exchanging the meadow in return for a mansion on ul. Floriańska. The building burned down a few years after the transaction, thus starting a controversy between the order and the City Council that lasted for centuries. Dissatisfied with the unfortunate transaction, the Premonstratensians tried to regain the Błonia, appealing to the king and the Pope. All in vain, however. Seven stages from Kielce to Krakow with a lot of unreleased track

Warsaw, 27 Novembre 2021 – The 79th edition of the Tour de Pologne, UCI World Tour race, was officially presented today, during the live on TVP Sport. There, Czeslaw Lang explained in detail the seven stages of the Polish race that will take place from 30 July to 5 August 2022.

As in the previous edition, the riders will have to compete on a pretty varied and impressive route facing short, steep and decisive climbs, just like in the past but more than in the previous edition. The time trial will again be the key point of the race, although in 2022 it will be an uphill time trial. In addition there will be three stages for pure sprinters, two for climbers and one will suit the Classics specialists. A long and intense race is expected with a total of 1.226,7 kilometres across some of the most beautiful places in the country.

Tour de Pologne: Almeida wins stage 4

Race leader bests Mohoric to extend his race lead

João Almeida ( Deceuninck-QuickStep ) nabbed his second victory on stage 4 at the Tour de Pologne . Wearing the overall leader's jersey, Almeida jumped off of the slipstream of Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious) and sprinted to the win at Bukovina Resort. Mohoric had to settle for second place while Andrea Vendrame (AG2R Citroën) finished third.

Almeida increased his lead in the overall classification to eight seconds ahead of Mohoric and 14 seconds ahead of Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) as the race heads into stage 5’s 172.8km from Chochołów to Bielsko-Biała.

All of the breakaway riders were reeled back into the fold as the race headed toward the final at Bukovina Resort. Remi Cavagna (Deceuninck-QuickStep) set a fast pace on the early slopes of the final climb that created separations at the front of the field. He was joined by teammate Mikkel Honoré, while overall leader Almeida sat back protected in the field.

Honoré continued on alone as Cavagna dropped back to the field, but UAE Team Emirates set a fast pace from behind, thinning out the field, as they tried to catch the lone escapee.

The roads kicked up with 2km to go and Honore held a gap small of 10 seconds. UAE continued to lead the race on the final ascent but they were taken over by Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux, Ineos Grenadiers and Lotto Soudal.

Honoré desperately tried to hold onto a sliver of a gap inside 500 metres, as Almeida came to the front of the field just in case his teammate was caught. 

Mohoric launched himself in an early sprint, passing Honoré, but Almeida proved strongest as he came around Mohoric and lunged to take his second stage victory at the Tour de Pologne.

How it unfolded

The fourth stage of the Tour de Pologne was 159.9km from Tarnów to Bukovina Resort and well-suited for the climbers with an uphill finish. The stage included two intermediate sprints sat Zakliczyn (28km) and Kroscienko nad Dunajcem (114km), and three categorized ascents at Lubinka (15km), Chomranice (62km) and before the final climb at Łapszanka (150km).

Łukasz Owsian (Team Arkéa Samsic) picked up full points over the first climb just 15km into the stage and increased his lead in the mountain classification.

The day’s early breakaway of five were Larry Warbasse (AG2R Citroën Team), Attila Valter (Groupama-FDJ), Edward Theuns (Trek-Segafredo), Quinten Hermans (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux), and Marco Canola (Gazprom-RusVelo). 

Hermans took the points at the intermediate sprint in Zakliczyn, and even though he was the highest placed GC rider of the breakaway at 40 seconds behind overall leader João Almeida (Deceuninck-QuickStep), he then sat up and waited for the peloton.

The breakaway pushed their lead out to four minutes as they approached the next climb over Chomranice, 5km at 4 per cent, with Theuns taking the mountain points over the top. He also won the intermediate sprint in Kroscienko nad Dunajcem.

Deceuninck-QuickStep set a pace from the main field to keep the gap at a more manageable two minutes. 

As the gap reduced, Alexis Renard (Israel Start-Up Nation) jumped from the field to try and bridge to the breakaway, however, his efforts seemed futile as the gap to the solo chaser and the main breakaway fell to one minute ahead of the final categorized mountain, Łapszanka.

Theuns fell off the pace on the climb, but despite the efforts of Trek-Segafredo behind, Canola, Valter and Warbasse managed to stretch their lead back out to 30 seconds nearing the top. Warbasse was the next to drop and then Canola, as Valter continued over the top alone.

Valter descended with 20 seconds in hand as the peloton bore down behind him inside the final 10km of the race, but that gap was slashed in half inside 7km as Ineos Grenadiers led the chase. Valter was caught 6km out from an uphill finish at Bukovina Resort.

Kirsten has a background in Kinesiology and Health Science. She has been involved in cycling from the community and grassroots level to professional cycling's biggest races, reporting on the WorldTour, Spring Classics, Tours de France, World Championships and Olympic Games.

She began her sports journalism career with Cyclingnews as a North American Correspondent in 2006. In 2018, Kirsten became Women's Editor – overseeing the content strategy, race coverage and growth of women's professional cycling – before becoming Deputy Editor in 2023.
