Sweater Organizer: Amazon

Closet System: IKEA

I wouldn’t say I’m a total neat freak, but I certainly like things organized. A place for everything and everything in its place, right? Whether it’s keeping my kitchen in order, or Miles nursery – it’s so satisfying to see that everything in my home has a, well…home! The same goes for my own clothes.

my wardrobe tour | how to organize clothing with minimal space

We have a small home with minimal storage and closet space. And while it’s hot within the blogger/influencer industry to have full rooms dedicated to clothing and handbags – that’s just not realistic to us normal folk. Adam and I share a modest closet and we had to get creative with how we store our things. My wardrobe tour is quick and to the point, but it works for me!

As I said, our home is small and closet space is limited. So with that, I have to keep all my clothing for all seasons in my closet year-round. That means if something is going to live in my closet, I better really love it and wear it, a lot!

Post-baby I did a full overhaul of my closet and discarded (donated or sold on Poshmark ) items that no longer fit or I knew didn’t work for my new life as a mom. I really downsized my dress collection and now have just a small handful of styles that I love and wear in the spring and summer.

Y’all know I love a good knit or cozy sweatshirt , so I keep them front and center in my closet. I purchased this hanging shelf organized off Amazon and I love it! Such an easy and affordable way to utilize all the space I have and keep my sweaters organized.

my wardrobe tour | how to organize clothing with minimal space

If there is one thing the past year has shown me is that I hardly wear shoes any more, ha! Let’s be real, I’m never leaving the house. And when I do, it’s in sneakers or sandals. My collection of casual footwear is on the rise while my sky-high heels are slowly making their way out. Not that I don’t still own a few pairs, but they’re kept towards the top of my shoe shelf collecting dust until the world goes back to normal.

Jackets & Coats

My closet holds everything, all seasons in one space – that even means my jackets and coats. I use the top rack to keep all my outwear together and a few random pullovers and sweatshirts. Easily accessible but higher up and out of the way at the same time.

Shirts & Jeans

You probably thought my closet tour would include a lot more shirts, right? Totally wrong. What you see here, that’s it! (I mean, besides loungewear tops which I’ll get into later.) I organize by color and length and keep shirts towards the front, and hang my jeans , pants, and skirts towards the back. Hanging jeans isn’t my favorite organizational hack but there was no other place for them so yeah, hanging it is!

organized shoes on rack

Loungewear & Pajamas

For items that are more casual (loungewear, pajamas, bras, and underwear) I use the storage bench at the end of our bed. It’s small but mighty! This is where I keep the clothing that, let’s be real, I wear the most these days. Again, I don’t own a lot of clothes so what I do have are things I really love and wear a lot!

Wardrobe Organization Tips

I’m certainly not Marie Kondo over here, but I do have a few tips and tricks for keeping my closet as organized as possible. As you can tell from my wardrobe tour, I don’t have a lot of space. When you don’t have a lot of areas to work with, you have to be smart about what you do to maximize the space given and also make it look presentable and pretty.

closet organization tips

Declutter By Category

If doing a full closet overhaul seems daunting, start decluttering one category at a time. Start with dresses, then do tops and sweaters, then jackets, etc. Working in small batches to see what you have, what you actually wear and love, is so important so you don’t get overwhelmed and give up.

Use Coordinating Hangers

Mismatched hangers is by far one of my top 5 home pet peeves! It makes everything look so messy and sloppy and woof, don’t even bring a wire hanger into my closet! No no no! I use these classic black felt hangers and have for years.

bench storage for pajamas and underwear

Storing Clothes By Category

In my bench, I have room for a few rows of clothing items and they’re stored by category. Bras and underwear on the far left, then pajamas and loungewear tops, followed by leggings and then sweatpants. All my favorite things are in one easily organized spot so I can grab and go.

Stacking Thicker Items

Like items should all be together, of course. I used to hang my sweaters at one time but realized it took up way too much space. When I decided to stack my thicker items like my knits in my clothing organizer it was a total game-changer for my closet. Looking back at how I used that space before it was such a waste, this way works much better!

stacked sweaters

If you’re wanting to organize your own wardrobe, you need to really assess what you have in relation to how much space you can actually use for all your clothing. I suggest if you’re wanting to take a closer look at your personal style try and curate a capsule wardrobe. It’s basically what I did once I accepted my new postpartum body and lifestyle. Your style and how you organize things can evolve and that’s ok! Using my own tips here, my wardrobe tour is full of things that get a ton of use.

Thanks for showing a realistic closet! As much as I’d love a dedicated room to store and beautifully organize my things, that’s not feasible. I did a major closet purge before quarantine started and think it’s probably time to do another one.

I assumed you had a LOT more clothing. This shows how much variety you can get from a well-curated wardrobe.

I just feel like we don’t see enough realistic closet tours in the influencer space – not all of us have dedicated rooms for clothes! LOL xoxo Cathy

EasyClosets Review (Tour My Closet!)

This is my second time using EasyClosets! This post outlines my EasyClosets review of the design, order, and install process. EasyClosets sponsored my closet in exchange for this post, and this post includes affiliate links.

Easyclosets review.

A closet system is one of those things that you don’t think about needing until you’re staring at a small white room with four walls! And then where do you start? The ideal closet has different kinds of storage space from hanging clothes (short and long!), drawers, shelves, and shoes. The more you can tailor the spaces to your needs, the more your closet will feel personalized to you.

EasyClosets Review

My Previous EasyCloset

My pre-renovation closet was also from EasyClosets. EasyClosets was recommended by my realtor back in 2015, and I ordered my system from them and paid a handyman to install it. I was very happy with the previous version and wanted to use the company again since I knew the quality and install process already. I really did maximize my small corner of that space. We re-used the drawers and shelves in Thomas’s new closet since he has much fewer clothing needs than me. 😉

Our New Closets

In our new primary bedroom, bigger closets were on the wishlist, and bigger closets did we get! Mine is huge with room to grow (as planned!). One compromise to getting the bigger of the two was that the door to our storage room (the former rooftop deck door) is in the middle of my closet wall. But it lets in extra light (that’s why we went with a glass pane), so I’m not mad about it!

During the reno!

During the renovation

Here’s the story of my EasyClosets experience from start to finish, including designing with a sloped ceiling and the late-night install by Thomas!

EasyClosets offers a great balance between a high-end custom closet and a DIY experience. It’s exactly what consumers need: a product that is a custom design but still easy to install yourself. EasyClosets pieces are made to order at their HQ in Michigan, which means your pieces are designed for you rather than being a modular design that is one-size-fits-all. If you’ve ever put together furniture, you know how important it is that the pieces are pre-drilled and cut to actually fit together .

The pieces are shipped to you to install, saving lots of money on the install side by being user-friendly for the average person. They offer a variety of closet combinations and styles, so you can customize your space however you want — more shelves, more hanging, more drawers, or a little of each.

Design Process

One of the best perks of the company is the free design service! I started to design something myself using their online design program to get a ballpark price range, and I quickly realized that I was not talented in the spacial department. I wasn’t 100% confident inputing my measurements in the design tool and definitely did not want to design a closet that wouldn’t fit our space, so I reached out to their team for a free design.

EasyClosets Design Process

In my request, I explained that I wanted “a lot of drawers, hanging space for half and full length, and plenty of shoe storage.” (Y’all know I love my drawers for not folding laundry !) I received a response from Zack, who was able to input measurements and create not one but two different custom design options for me that same day. Zack and I went back and forth on a few tweaks, and I was able to log in and see the designs in 2 and 3D! It was very cool.

EasyClosets Design Process

Design Finishes

Once I had accounted for all my clothing categories, I chose finishes such as the black hardware (to match the rest of our house) and a few accessories, like a jewelry drawer and valet rod. See all the choices here!

Drawers and Shelves Design Process

And here is the same piece in real life!

Drawers and Shelves

EasyClosets Pricing

You can use the EasyClosets design tool to put in your dimensions and add some storage pieces to get an instant price quote for the closet size you need. My closet is large, and even though I didn’t need every inch full, I knew I wanted to maximize the space while I could rather than build it in stages. My whole closet was about $5,000, including tax.

EasyClosets is said to be around 40% lower cost when compared to other closet companies like California Closets because they offer a factory direct do-it-yourself solution. I did not get any other closet quotes, but Thomas told me local companies would be $10k+.

EasyClosets always offers free shipping on orders over $400, which is great because freight shipping can be a beast with some online deliveries! They do have payment plan options as well.

Customer Service + Delivery

Customer service is available six days a week for extended hours should you need to reach them with an install or delivery question. EasyClosets products include a limited lifetime warranty. Fun fact: The core of most EasyClosets panels is made of 100% recycled and/or repurposed wood fiber.

I had a great experience working with Zack and the team. Order and delivery emails told me it would take about 3 weeks to get to my house. Boxes of hardware came via UPS quite quickly, and the freight truck called me in advance to schedule the larger delivery. I was able to pick the date we wanted that worked well with our renovation timeline.

EasyClosets delivery

Luckily, I am married to a handy man who installed my closet over a series of evenings while the kids and I were in North Carolina. Thomas and I FaceTimed each night to check in on the progress. I loved seeing it come to life!

EasyClosets installation

While tedious at times, the install went smoothly. Check out Thomas’s tips below. I finished the last steps myself when I came home and installed the hanging rods, shelves, and valet rod because Thomas didn’t know exactly where I wanted them. Those parts were definitely so easy that even I could do them!

EasyClosets Review

EasyClosets Installation Tips from Thomas

1. study up for the installation and watch the videos.

No really, do it ! There is a thorough installation guide on the website that I would definitely recommend studying first. There are lots of videos, too. I am such a visual person that seeing someone else do it is so much easier than trying to interpret text only. (Although you get a complete book customized to your exact closet, too!)

2. Organize parts before starting

The team recommended we account for all pieces prior to starting the install in the event that something was missing. Thomas also found it helpful to unbox and organize everything first rather than unpack one box at a time. It made him faster.

3. Prepare for lots of cardboard recycling

Have a box cutter and make space in your trunk to take the boxes to the proper recycling center. It was a lot and wouldn’t have fit in our household recycling bin. Or better yet, find someone who is moving who could use them!

4. Ask for a spreadsheet

Thomas reached out to customer service for a parts list spreadsheet that he found helpful for the install. There were a lot of pieces and this sheet helped him sort them. I recommend asking for it in advance.

5. Two people can be helpful

While Thomas installed the closet on his own, he said it would have been nice to have an extra set of hands for putting the vertical panels into place. FYI if there are two of you!

6. Tools you will need

You’ll need a stud finder, cordless drill, level, and tape measure. Thomas recommends a rubber mallet and ladder, too. Plus good music!

7. Use an assembly line method for drawers

Rather than assembling one drawer at a time on the floor, Thomas used a waist-high work station and built drawers in an assembly line. Easier on the back!

My Closet Tour!

Everything about my closet feels high quality. I love the black hardware, the abundance of drawers, the space for clothes to breathe, and the layout I chose. Plus, I added some personal items to make it very KERF. : ) Check out the video tour on YouTube here!

My Closet Tour

Long Dress Zone

It is SO NICE having all of my clothes in one space rather than previously having off-season clothes in a dresser and long dresses in Thomas’s closet because my 1.0 closet didn’t have any long dress space.

Long Dress Zone

Now I have zones for summer tops, winter tops, long dresses and outerwear. Drawers house my casual/everyday/athleisure clothes. I have plenty of room to grow in the back where I am storing my boots, soccer gear, and other less-used things.

EasyClosets Review

Jewelry Drawer

The jewelry drawer was something Zack put into his design. I LOVE having my jewelry organized! (Don’t rob me – nothing is real!)

Jewelry Drawer

How cool is this pull-out valet rod for outfit planning? Since I rarely need to put fancy clothes out, I use it most often for my everyday robe. There is also a slide out belt/necklace/tie organizer.

Valet Rod

Shoe Shelves

I spaced these shelves for shoes and love having them visible rather than tossed in a basket or stacked on top of one another.

Shoe Shelves

Two Oversights By Me

1. i can barely see in the top drawers.

One small mishap I didn’t realize until the closet was all built and ready was the height of the highest drawers. At 5’2″, I can barely see in! I didn’t even think to measure the height. However, I don’t regret this because it maximizes space. So, rather than have the jewelry drawer on the top, it’s in the middle. This means I can see the jewelry much better.

2. I didn’t plan a laundry area!

I have a clothing hamper and didn’t plan for it to be inside the door. But, I tucked it into one of my hanging clothes spaces, and that’s working just fine.

I added some personal touches from my childhood, too:

personal touches from my childhood

I have nothing but good things to say in my EasyClosets review. I highly recommend! EasyClosets also offers solutions for the pantry, laundry room, and garage, so check those options out, too! Check out this tips & ideas page for design inspiration.

My Closet Tour: Part One

By jillian harris.

Good morning everyone!! I often get asked questions about how we organize our closet and what the layout is so, instead of writing a big long drawn out blog with a ton of photos, I thought it would be fun to take you on a VIDEO TOUR of my closet so you could see exactly how my closet functions, what it looks like and how much of it I gave up to Justin … LOL!! This is my FIRST ever walk-in closet (believe it or not!) and I have a few tricks up my sleeve (or dress ?? lol) that I want to share with you!!

But before we dig in, can we talk fashion for a minute?? First off, I know many of you will ask where my dress is from in this video so I’ll let you know now that it’s from Modcloth , it’s a seersucker maxi dress and it’s the BEST for summer!! Last year I had a similar dress from Urban Outfitters  and I wore it all the time, I had it in a couple of different colours so it quickly became my summer staple! Urban Outfitters AND Modcloth actually have quite a few dresses that are great for everyday wear during the spring and summer months. I’ve made sure to link my favourites for you below, you can click directly on each image to get all of the details on every item!

Urban Outfitters

And I have ONE more piece of news to share with you … Shopbop has a SALE happening right now and it’s only going to be around for a couple more days!! So, if you’re in need of a closet refresh then NOW is the time to do it!! Again, I’ve linked some of my favourite tops, dresses, shoes, and accessories from their sale below!! What about jackets and blazers etc? This can’t honestly be all your clothes??

Hi Jillian It’s Barb and Wendy from Simply Spark Joy. We are the only Certified Marie Kondo consultants in the Okanagan. We’d absolutely luv the opportunity to demonstrate the “spark joy” technique talked about in the book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. We could also work on the unique folding and hanging techniques.

Where did you get your felt hangers from?! Thanks 🙂

Love this! Now i think i need to do a closet purge and re-organize! Thanks for the Inspo! <3

What about that mirrored wardrobe in the middle? What do you use that part for?

It’s filled with shoes!! XO

Loved looking into your closet space!

Are you by any chance getting rid of the olive green jumpsuit from Urban Outfitters LOL? Been daydreaming of that one for some time! Thanks for your awesome blog, it is always cheering my days up 🙂

I was eyeing your fragrances. Which ones do you wear ?

I’m in love with the idea of having a closet with windows! Are you glasses prescription? I’d love to take your “rejected” clothes off your hands! Pleeeeease!

So much love for your closet, the lay out , all the clothes! So darn pretty! This has inspired me… I need to design out closet and I’m so nervous about it. It’s big but not that big and no pretty windows (wahhh). Thanks for sharing and I’ll take any tips you have to help me design our closet.

Isn’t purging the best? I just purged my closet recently and it felt so good! It’s therapeutic for me. 🙂 I LOVE all the light you have in the closet with the addition of the window– it’s the one thing my closet is missing! I need some good lightening in there. Looking forward to seeing part II!

You could at your last closet tour video show few outfits you would wear for a party, for work, hanging out with your friends, etc.

Thanks for the tour Jillian! Now the real question is, what size of a closet makes for the best walk-in?

Such a beautiful space!

Very happy I made the switch to the black velvet hangers. They are so slim so everything takes up less space, and I love that it’s an attractive, matching look! (Wish I had thought of a window for closet photos…lol!)

Hi Jill, curious to know what you do with the clothes you want to give away? Do you donate them? Sell them? You have such nice clothes and wonder who they go to! Thanks!

I consign them at the Main Exchange and donate to Mama’s for Mama’s!

Couple item questions… what was the black dress hanging at the very end of the video, I also saw a blue and white stripe pleplum top hanging, and the white lacy top/dress. Can you post which items they are???

Love how bright your closet is! I had a beautiful walk in closet in my house in Vegas and I will be incorporating one into my next house. Like you said once you have one you want to go larger next time! Currently I have every closet in my house as the kids have moved out and each closet is designated for different things, I have a summer closet, winter closet, denim closet, jacket closet and a western closet (I live in Calgary so I’m prepared for Stampede!) I have loved every one of your room tours and have ideas for our next house! Thank you for your inspirations!

Being new to your channel ive just seen this vlog….. where do u store your winter stuff and is ther enough space for all your coats and jackets

We have storage space in our laundry room for winter jackets and we store our winter shoes in the garage!! As for my sweaters, I still have most of them in my closet and I keep my jeans and leggings in the drawers! xo

A Tour Of My Closet

I recently did a tour of my closet on my YouTube channel. I wanted to compliment this video with a blog post. In order to go more in depth into how I organize my closet. I hope that by giving you a tour of my closet. You might be inspired to organize your closet.

Closet Organization

This is the first time in my life that my closet is organized in such a way that I am obsessed with it. I enjoy walking into my closet everyday and picking out the clothes that I am going to wear. Everything has a designated spot, is easy to get to, and put away. I absolutely love it. Now this didn’t happen overnight. It has taken a lot of trial and error to get my closet this organized.

I have all of my dresses on one side of my closet and they are color coordinated. Starting with beige, then moving into white, grey, black, blue, pink, and red. All of my clothes are color coordinated in this order. My dresses are followed by my night gowns and then my halloween costumes.

My shoes are stored in clear plastic shoe boxes that I found at Target . On shelves that are hung at eye level. Most people have their shoes out on display. But I prefer to keep my shoes in clear plastic shoe boxes for two reasons. The first, so that they do not collect dust. The second, to prevent smelly shoe odors from entering my closet. I purposely hung the shelves that my shoes are on at eye level so that there is no clutter on the floor. Also, the clear plastic show boxes make it easy to see what shoes I have stored.

I have my expensive handbags displayed on the top shelf in my closet. All of my other less expensive handbags and or totes. I have hanging on a hook within arm’s reach. These are bags that I use most often for running around and or doing errands. Whereas my more expensive bags, I use less often for date nights and or special events. Hence, the reason why they are the top shelf of my closet.

I am obsessed with my Hamper . I had to go thru a few before I found one that I really liked. It is a double hamper, with removable liner bags, and a magnetic lid. I got it in grey to match the grey walls in my master bedroom. It’s collapsable, the liner bags are easy to put in and take out, and there are even labels inside to help you sort your clothes more easily. I’m considering getting a second hamper in order to sort my bathroom towels and gym clothes from my casual clothes.

I previously arrange my tops where they were all color coordinated. However, I just made a slight change. I now have my tops organized by type and then they are color coordinated. For example, I have all of my sleeveless shirts together. Then I have them color coordinated. I did the same for my short sleeve shirts, long sleeve shirts, sweaters, and jackets. Although having all of my tops color coordinated previously was more visually appealing. Having them organized now by type and then by color has proven to be more efficient when getting ready. I am able to find what I am looking for a lot faster.

I have my bottoms arranged similar to my tops. By type and then they are color coordinated. I start from my skirts, then move into shorts, capris, and end with jeans.

I prefer to hang the majority of my clothes. Because I do not like the creases and wrinkles that you get when you fold your clothes. The only clothes that I fold are my bras, underwear, and socks. I also fold my heavier sweaters and jackets for when I travel to cold climates. As most of you know, I live in Florida. With that said, I do not wear my heavier sweaters and jackets often. So it makes more sense for me to have them folded.

I know that the slim velvet hangers are very popular to hang your clothes on. Because they save space. But I prefer the basic plastic white hangers. Because they are affordable, easy to replace because you can find them everywhere, and I really like how sturdy the pant hangers are with the clips. I’ll link them here for you to see for yourself.

I once read that majority of people wear 20% of their closet 80% of the time . With that said, why do I need velvet space saving hangers if I only wear 20% of my wardrobe. The plastic white hangers will take up more space and make your closet look fuller. Preventing you from buying additional clothes that you do not need and won’t end up wearing.

On the inside of my closet, above my closet doors, I have about two feet of space. I didn’t know where to store my hats and one day I just took it upon myself to hammer some nails in that area above my closet doors and hang my hats there. They are out of the way, have a designated spot, and are able to keep their shape. Sometimes I even forgot that they are up there, that is until I need a hat. I am able to hang five hats in this spot and could easily fit two more if I wanted. But I don’t own a lot of hats.

As I mentioned earlier, I recorded a tour of my closet on my YouT u be channel. I have the video linked down below for you to watch. Don’t forget to “Like” this video and to “Subscribe” to my YouTube channel. So you can keep up with my latest videos. I upload new videos every Sunday & Thursday.

That is it for a tour of my closet. I hope that you enjoyed reading this blog post and found it helpful. If you have any questions feel free to comment down below. If you want to take your closet organization a step further then be sure to read my blog post on How To Update Your Wardrobe.

Hi just going through your site as i just came across it today looking for inspiration… I am so excited to redo my closet as well. Almost done with my kitchen and so next trip my husband takes I’m going to gut our closet and paint it out and make it pretty. Its’ always been an eye sore as it’s just not laid our correctly but made some changes in that department, now time to pretty it up. Love the chandelier idea. I am actually going to take our door off as it is in the way no matter which way it is on there. May do a sliding barn door later, but if it’s just as nice as our room i just finished decorating then i will be proud to have the closet shown off 🙂 Love your style as well! Always wanted a chandelier in our room but nowhere to put it, never thought of the closet, that’s a great idea, and fun!! You’ve inspired me thank you 🙂

So beautifully put together, Nikki! Master closet project is in the planning stages for me right now. I will be incorporating many of your ideas! Thanks so much!

My New Closet Tour: How I Organize My Closet

September 7, 2022 by Katie H.

My New Closet Tour

Welcome to my new closet! I’ve been wanting to do a closet tour ever since I moved into my new house this past February, but first I needed to get it all organized. I finally have it at a good spot so I figured today I would take you along on a little tour of my favorite room in the house.

*This post contains affiliate links.

My New Closet

Closet Upgrade

I have moved around a lot in the last 11 years. This is the 6th house that my husband and I have lived in together since we’ve been married. Every time I move, my closet is the first place I start organizing. I love to have a clean organized closet. It helps me plan out my outfits and it helps me save money in the long run. It doesn’t need to be “Pinterest perfect”, but as long as everything has a place and the space is functional I will be able to stay organized and I won’t waste money shopping for clothes that I don’t need.

This closet is a huge upgrade for me from my last closet. You may have heard me complaining about my dysfunctional closet at my rental house in Grand Rapids. I was constantly trying to figure out ways to make the space livable. You can read more about how I organized my small closet HERE ! I did my best to work with the space I had, but no matter how hard I tried I still needed more space.

This new closet is more than I could ask for in a closet. Not only is it huge, but it’s also very functional. It’s custom-built with shelves that create a functional space to organize my entire wardrobe. Each category of my wardrobe has its own place and it’s easy to find. And believe it or not, my husband still has plenty of space on his side of the closet for all his clothes too!

Here is a little closet tour! Hopefully, it will give you some organizing ideas and inspire you to create a functional closet space as well.

Closet Tour

My new closset

My shoe wall is one of my favorite spots in my closet. I lined the shelves with a grey marble shelf liner that you would typically line your kitchen cabinets with. I just wanted to keep the white shelves from getting dirty. I like that this liner is grippy so my shoes don’t slip around.

Accessories

my closet

Instead of buying new purse hangers, my husband made me some S-hook hangers to hang my purses on. I’m not loving how the wire leaves a mark on my purse straps, so I might be buying some purse hangers soon. I also use my plastic hangers to hang my purses as well.

My New Closet

I struggled with my pants because I wasn’t sure how I wanted to organize them. I feel that denim is sometimes better when it’s folded, but this shelf was the perfect spot to hang my pants. I tried out some pant hangers, but I really didn’t like them, so I ended up using the same velvet no-slip hangers that I use with the rest of my clothes. To keep the jeans from looking messy, I fold them in half and keep the front of the jeans facing the wall. I keep them all facing the same way and line them up from darkest to lightest and then my colored pants at the very end.

Whether you have a big or small closet, you can’t go wrong when you keep it clean and organized. I hope to share some more rooms in my new house as we decorate and add in all the little details we didn’t have time to focus on in the building process. Until then, make sure you are following me on Instagram to hear more about my house progress!

The Tour de France is back for another year of exciting race action, tragic defeats, and heroic moments. So once again, I’m going to be doing what bike nerds love doing most — looking at all the awesome bikes! Riders, teams, and manufacturers all bring their best equipment to the Tour, so its the perfect place for us to geek out on new bikes, gear, and tech.

When I tracked all the stage-winning bikes and gear last year, it became one of my most popular posts, so let’s do it again this year. At the end, we should have some fun data, and maybe some inspiration for how to equip our own road bikes at home.

Stage 1 - Florence > Rimini - Winner: Scott Foil RC Scott Foil RC

Romain Bardet Tour de France 2024 stage 1 win

Stage 1 of this years was expected to be one of the hardest Tour starts in recent memory. Tough climbs, high temps, and costal winds would make many riders suffer early. DSM teammates Romain Bardet and Frank van den Broek surprised everyone by staying away until the line, giving the Scott Foil RC a 1-2 finish. The Foil RC recieved a major update in 2023, that Scott claims made it 9% lighter, 21% faster and 10% more comfortable. Maybe this is proof!

Bardet swapped to the shallower and lighter Dura-Ace C36 wheels (versus the deeper C60 wheels their bikes are often photographed with) for the tough climbs that came early in the stage. Besides good legs, tactics, and descending, their aero frames, aero Syncros cockpits, and turned in levers surely made them extra slippery, which probably helped the pair maintain their gap in the windy finale!

I also noticed that Bardet is running bars with a more classic profile rather than the shallow drops most riders use these days. He also had a 26mm front tire (paired with a 28mm rear... weird). That used to be considered wide, but now it's surprisingly narrow!

Stage 2 - Cesenatico > Bologne - Winner: Bianchi Oltre RC Bianchi Oltre RC Tour de France

Kevin Vaquelin Tour de France Stage 2 win

How do you get the French to win stages at the Tour? Start in Italy! We have another French winner, conveniently, on and Italian bike too. Kévin Vauquelin attacked the breakaway just over 14km from the finish and solo'd to the win. Despite the hilliness of the first two stages this year, it seems that most riders who have the option of an aero or a climbing bike have been been choosing the aero bike, usually with shallower wheels.

Bianchi's all-rounder, the Specialissima RC, has improved aerodynamics, and Vauquelin's teammate in the breakaway was riding it, but Vauquelin decided to go with the heavier but more aerodynamic Oltre RC. He did swap to the lighter Vision Metron 45 SL wheels for the tough climbs. Aero frame + lightweight wheels seems to be the combo du jour.

Stage 3 - Plaisance > Turin - Winner: Cube Litening Aero C:68X

Cube Lightning c68 Pro

Rider: Biniam Girmay Bike: Cube Litening Aero C:68X Pro Drivetrain: Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 Wheels: Newmen Streem Sprint Vonoa Tires: Continental Grand Prix 5000 S (or TT?) TR Bike Type: Aero Stage Type: Flat

Biniam Girmay 2024 Tour de France stage 3 win

Photo: Intermarché-Wanty

Bini, Bini, Bini! Biniam Girmay took his first-ever stage win and he has become the first-ever Black African stage winner. Holy crap, that brought a tear to my eye. He diced through a chaotic bunch sprint and had enough of a lead to post up and celebrate before the line. Someone might need to check me on this, but I also think this is the first TdF stage win for Cube Bikes too. They're not well-known here in the US, but the German brand is BIG in Europe.

The bike photo above is a bit outdated because Bini's Intermarché-Wanty team is running the newer Newman Stream Sprint wheels which have a wider 22mm internal width (vs. 18mm for the old Advance SL Streem wheels) and they weigh 1,355g. This is super impressive for 60mm/66mm deep wheels and it's thanks to the use of Newman's Vonoa carbon spokes.

Bini's bike was photographed with Conti GP 5000 TT TR tires and he likely used them for the stage. They're slightly faster than the "regular" GP 5000 S TR but sacrifice some puncture protection so many teams only use them on super flat stages. Some also mix tires with a TT on the front and S on the rear.

Also, look how narrow Bini's handlebars are compared to the other racers in this finish photo. Narrow bars for the win! Perhaps running them so narrow (they look ~35-36cm?) is why he doesn't mind the aero penalty of wrapping the tops in bar tape.

Stage 4 - Pinerolo > Valloire - Winner: Colnago V4Rs

Colnago V4Rs Tadej Pogacar

Rider: Tadej Pogacar Bike: Colnago V4Rs Drivetrain: Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 Wheels: ENVE SES 4.5 Tires: Continental Grand Prix 5000 S TR Bike Type: All-Rounder Stage Type: Mountain

Tadej Pogacar 2024 Tour de France stage 4 win

Photo: ASO/Billy Ceusters

A few things in life are certain: death, taxes, and Tadej Pogacar ripping everyone's legs off with a devastating attack on the final meters of a climb. Pogacar rode back into the Yellow Jersey on the Col du Galibier, erasing any doubt that he's this year's favorite. He did so on his trusty Colnago V4Rs.

The Colnago V4Rs isn't the most aero or the lightest bike in the peloton, but it's a solid do-it-all racer. It certainly hasn't held Pogacar back. Interestingly, he chose to run the deeper ENVE SES 4.5 wheels today, despite the big uncategorized climb. The SES 4.5 seems to be Pogacar's go-to, and he only swaps to the lighter SES 2.3 or 3.4 wheels on truly extreme climbing days.

Like Bini's bike, Pogacar's was photographed on stage 3 with Continental GP 5000 TT TR tires. With a fast and tricky descent at the finish of stage 4 though, it's very likely that Pogacar switched to the GP 5000 S TR tires for today's stage.

I do love that Pogacar does some serious bike geek things to his bike with Carbon-Ti hubs, chainrings, and brake rotors, plus absoluteBLACK Ceramic GRAPHENpads brake pads. Again, I must comment on the bars. Pogacar runs it long, low, and narrow with a one-piece ENVE cockpit measuring 36cm wide with a 130mm stem and the levers turned in as far as the rules allow. So aggressive!

Stage 5 - Saint-Jean-De-Maurienne > Saint-Vulbas - Winner: Wilier Triestina Filante SLR

Mark Cavendish Wilier Triestina Filante SLR

Rider: Mark Cavendish Bike: Wilier Triestina Filante SLR Drivetrain: Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 Wheels: Vision Metron 60 SL Tires: Vittoria Corsa Pro Bike Type: Aero Stage Type: Flat

Mark Cavendish 2024 tour de France stage win

Photo: Sprint Cycling Agency

He fricken' did it. I almost can't believe it. Mark Cavendish has broken the Tour de France stage win record with his 35th victory. His team was great in the run-in, but in the end, he surfed wheels on his own to somehow get into the perfect position. When he hit the front with speed, he was so low and aero, last year's fastest man Jasper Philipsen couldn't come around.

The record-setting bike was a Wilier Triestina Filante SLR with a special edition Cavendish paint job. The colors represent some of Cavendish’s career highlights — green for his two Tour points jerseys, yellow for his brief stint in the yellow jersey as the Tour de France leader, with blues and reds completing the colors of the World Championship rainbow band, which Cavendish won in 2011. The fork says " CVNDSH," which is Cav’s personal brand. In case you don't know, dropping vowels is the cool thing to do these days.

Cav put a lot of thought into aero enhancements this year with aero water bottles, socks, and a new aero racesuit. Clearly it helped! His team also switched from HED to Vision wheels, so Cav won on the Vision Metron 60 SL wheels, which might be some of the most underrated race wheels around. I've been eyeing them myself.

Also, check out that MASSIVE 55t Miche chainring. He certainly won't get spun out, but Shimano spend a lot of time perfecting their tooth profiles. Perhaps that's why Cav's chain dropped after he crossed the line...

Mark Cavendish Tour de France chain drop

My co-worker Andy say it's happened to Cav before and it's probably from "backpedaling super hard when he posts up."

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

my closet tour

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

my closet tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

my closet tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

my closet tour

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

my closet tour

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
