Great news for fans of African Lion Safari – they are open for the 2023 season and have lots of WILD fun in store for you and your family! We have the inside scoop on what you can expect when you visit this summer, updates on the new African Lion Safari ticket prices plus some tips and important info for visitors.

2023 Season highlights

African Lion Safari is Canada’s Original Safari Adventure. They maintain a collection of over 1,000 exotic birds and animals comprised of over 100 different species. What animal is your favourite? Will you giggle at the silly monkeys and lemurs or be entranced watching the long-legged giraffes stroll their habitat?

Drive Through Game Reserve – One of my earliest memories of African Lion Safari was when we saw cars driving through the game reserves getting oh-so-close to the animals roaming around. It was like nothing I had ever seen before! The drive-through is 9 km long and it takes you up close through 7 large Game Reserves featuring Nairobi Sanctuary, Simba Lion Country, Timbavati Lion Country, Wankie Bushland Trail, Rocky Ridge Veldt, Australasia and The Americas. You stay in your vehicle, driving at a very slow pace, and you get to witness animals roam their territory.

Take The “Nature Boy “Train – Hop on the train for a 15-minute ride through 16 hectares of animals and birds. A trip is included in your admission.

Climb Aboard The “African Queen” – Take a boat ride to enjoy a pleasant tour around Water Safari Lake. The informative captain will take you on a cruise around the islands and point out exotic primates including the White-handed gibbon, Ring-tailed lemur, Black-handed Spider monkeys and Robust Black Spider monkeys. Bird dwellers include the Marabou stork and the Pink-backed pelican. The tour is about 15 minutes and is included in your admission.

African Lion Safari’s Waterpark Splash Pad

The splash pad, Misumu Bay Wetplay, is more than just a splash pad at African Lion Safari! As a matter of fact, this may be the highlight of your visit! I have multiple friends who buy season passes strictly for this amazing waterpark. Dream Trip to South Africa with Costco Travel via Lions World Travel.

After six months, I finally share my wonderful and trusted memories of dealing with Costco Travel. With no connection to Africa, who else can I rely on? From the email that popped up from Costco Travel, Booking the trip with Laurendie of Lions World Travel, every transaction went smoothly. Laurendie reassured us that there will be a Lions World representative and driver to meet us at every airport for hotel transfer. All the hotels we stayed at with the Costco Package were rated 5 Stars or more: Silo Hotel, Lions Sand Ivory Lodge, Saxon, Victoria Falls Island Tree House...wonderful. South African Airways we enjoyed all the flights to and from JFK airport to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Skukuza, Johannesburg, Zimbabwe, Johannesburg back to JFK. Allowed 1 check luggage each, carry-on and personal bag. That's a luxury for safaris. This dream experience made us confident we would go back to more safaris with Costco Lions World Travel as our guide.

We had the most amazing time on our honeymoon South Africa trip! We chose the Platinum South Africa itinerary and it was wonderful. Cheryl Gould helped us every step of the way when planning our trip, she gave us recommendations on things to do, restaurants to try while we were in Cape Town and helped us add Shark Cage diving to our trip while we were in Gansbaai. Cheryl was attentive and you could tell she was passionate about her job and really wanted to make sure we got the most from our trip. Cheryl even organized little honeymoon surprises throughout our stay in South Africa. We were surprised to find champagne and flower petals in our room one night. Cheryl really went above and beyond to make sure we had the most enjoyable experience imaginable. The food was amazing everywhere we went, the timing of all of our transfers was great, the staff everywhere were exceptional and the views from each of our rooms was impeccable. We had the chance to see the Big5 while we went on safari and we even watched whales from our room at the Table Bay hotel in Cape Town. A once in a lifetime experience! Amazing trip!! I would highly recommend Lion World - they are highly rated for a reason! Our accommodations were top notch - luxury tents that didn't feel like tents - and our driver/tour director, Abdi, was great. Unfortunately my friend had to get an air ambulance back to Nairobi in the middle of the trip. Lion World was there with us every step of the way and the cost of the air ambulance was paid for! We saw every animal on our list and then some. Would love to go back to a different part of Africa and will definitely use Lion World. A lot of driving on bumpy roads, but I prefer that to flying because of all we saw.

Big Five Luxury Safari in Tanzania **Sustainable Approach to Travel

Wir wurden sehr positiv überrascht von der Safari, da wir nie damit gerechnet hätten, die Tiere zufällig so nahe sehen zu dürfen. Kessy war ein super Guide und fahrer, auch über Stock und Stein haben wir uns immer sehr sicher gefühlt. Dass ein Rad mal eine Platte hat, ist normal, aber er hat das Rad innerhalb kürzester Zeit gewechselt als wäre es sein Alltag. Die Unterkünfte waren alle perfekt. Der einzige Verbesserungsvorschlag von unserer Seite ist, der letzte Tag im Lake Manyara National Parks auf den ersten Tag zu welchseln, damit eine Steigerung der National Parks vorhanden ist.

14-day Kruger to the Delta, Chobe & Victoria Falls (Accommodated)

Overall, this was a good tour. Some days we were in the van for endless hours...but I understand that this was necessary. The location in Maun, although good in many ways including the food there, caused a lot of extra driving to the boat depot. Many of us wished that there had been more time to relax ...as the schedule didn't allow for much. I was very impressed with our driver/guide, Simon, who was extremely conscientious and worked long & hard every day . The accommodations ranged from excellent to adequate. The last place in Botswana would be fine in the summertime, but the "open air" rooms were quite chilly when we were there.

8 days: Best of Zambia, Botswana (Chobe) and Zimbabwe (Zambezi) Wildlife Safari Tour

The trip delivers what the title promises. The best of three countries in one package. Mark and his team took great care of their guests at all times and, together with their local partners, ensured a smooth vacation. In particular, the rhino safari in Zambia and the Chobe National Park in Botswana are a fantastic experience. Just like being able to see the Victoria Falls from both sides. The logistics of the numerous border crossings are fully supported and can therefore be completed without any worries (with appropriate preparation, depending on nationality). In my opinion, there is only room for improvement in the accommodation in Zimbabwe. The chosen lodge is in a solid condition, but the rooms (sanitary facilities, no air conditioning) show the passing decades. The food, on the other hand, is excellent and sumptuous! Despite the small drawback, an absolutely recommendable trip to experience the highlights of the three countries!

Victoria Falls & Serengeti Overland: Lakes & Landos

Cape Town to the Serengeti: Deserts & Wilderness

Enjoyed the trip, saw lots of different animals, history and culture. Spent a lot of the time driving but the variety of game drives and optional activities created a good balance. The 2 groups I was a part of were great people and good company. The meals however were poor, felt our guide didn't try his best, majority of meals were cheap and our meal allowances were equivalent to $2-3 when given to eat on our long drives. He definitely could of done better with options especially after several comments and suggestions from our group. I didn't feel the food we got was anywhere the price I paid for the trip. Breakfasts consisted of cornflakes, weetabix, fruit and occasional yoghurt which was hidden and rationed along with museli. There were some days closer to the end where we got eggs, sausage and pancakes. Some individuals didn't even eat much overall because there wasn't much selection. Lunches consisted of processed meat sandwiches, apples and bananas for the most part. Dinners were rice, pasta, some vegetables and bread. The meat options were fine and more catered to I found. Unfortunately I felt that our guide wasn't organized with activities either, left everything to the last minute. He became more involved and active on the 2nd half of our journey with the group, for the first half he was a little reserved. Our driver was amazing and very accommodating and friendly. I would definetely do another G trip but would like to have a more outgoing and accommodating guide.

I loved every minute of this tour. We covered a lot of territory, the pace was busy but manageable, and the activities were diverse. I made the right choice by choosing it.

Safaris, lakes, lions, beaches, historical sites, village visits, camping, long drives with windows down, gorillas, family style cooking, washing dishes, early mornings, hippos, boat safaris, peeing on the side of the road, cold showers, card games, photos, are some of the words that instantly come to mind from thinking about the last 3 months. Originally I was booked from just Nairobi to Zanzibar and I’m so glad I ended up extending all the way to South Africa! Our group was on the larger side as it was during the busy season July-Oct and we had about 20-25 people on the bus during the 3 months. The amount of people can vary as there are smaller sections of the absolute overland trips where people will be with you for different legs of the trip. (Ex: some people started and finished Zanzibar or started Vic Falls to Cape town, etc.) The best thing I can recommend for an enjoyable trip is having the right expectations & mindset as these overland trips are definitely not for everyone. After the 3 months I believe I met around 40 different people on the safari who had stayed for a section or the whole safari and I could tell that most absolutely loved the overland trip, however, there were a few people that struggled as they did not have the right expectations. As I already mentioned, flexibility is key for this trip. I believe they make this very clear on their website but somehow some people still show up with a very rigid mindset. Some days go as planned, some days go better, and some go worse. But that is all part of the African experience. People on these trips are from all different backgrounds, with different personalities, work ethics, and ways of doing things. Just roll with it. FOOD. Please be flexible for the sake of everyone. You must remember that if there is a group of 20-25 everyone has to be catered to for their dietary needs. Most lunches you are on your own. There will be a supermarket stop and you can get as you wish. But for dinner there will be a cooking team for that specific night so depending on the dietary restrictions there might have to be 3 different meals if you have vegetarians, vegans, and meat eaters. So I would definitely recommend being flexible when it comes to preferences. I wouldn’t recommend this trip for strict dietary restrictions (vegetarian ok but vegan, etc. not so much). Remember you are in Africa and there are weeks where the food options and supermarkets are limited. Staff. We had the same guide for the 77 days and 1 driver for the first 3/4 of the trip and then last 1/4 a different driver. Our guide and both drivers were from different parts of Africa and all had 10+ experience doing these tours. They are all very knowledgable & such helpful resources. They all speak multiple languages and handled the borders crossings and logistics professionally. They are the first people you see up in the morning and last people to bed making sure everything is in order. Our guide did a really good job at balancing all the different preferences of food, itinerary, etc. We had some unique characters in our group which made it pretty difficult for him to handle but he did a great job at balancing it for everyone. A great sense of humor and always had a positive outlook & willing to help. Truck. A bit older but honestly fit the 77 day across Africa vibe. The seats were comfy and there were plenty of outlets to charge electronics. The fridge wasn’t ideal as it was smaller especially after group food was in there. Facilities. Most camps we stayed were great and had what you needed. Wifi was kind of a joke, don't plan on much. Most campsites there "was" wifi but it rarely worked, especially when you have 25 people rolling up and wanting to get on. So a sim is a must if you care to be online, etc. 95% campsites had showers probably about 50-50 with hot water. Tents were surprisingly very comfortable. Plenty of space and sleeping pads were nice. Money. Plan to spend more than you think. You can do this trip with just doing the minimums but when everyone is going on an extra safari or an extra activity, you are going to want to do it as well. So many unique once in a lifestime opportunities, its hard to pass when in person. Maintain a positive attitude & energy. Although you don’t need to be “physically fit” this trip is demanding especially if you are doing the 77 days. There aren’t any necessary physically fit needs, but there are many early wake up calls, tearing down & setting up your tent everyday, and some nights you will be on cooking / cleaning duty, etc. It all adds up and you’re constantly on the move for months. That is all part of the adventure. You are going to meet tons of different people so you can imagine positive attitude is key. If you want a vacation to sit and chill on the beach this isn’t the trip for you. If you are ready to have an adventure of a lifetime and a unique experience meeting people from all around the world, seeing so many aspects of Africa from wildlife, villages, and hearing about the history and local customs you won’t be disappointed! Best advice have a flexible and positive outlook and you will have a great time! So glad I did it! Hindsight I would still recommend Absolute Africa especially knowing what I know now. Rushing down to South Africa or rushing the itinerary like some of the other tour companies isn’t something I wanted to do & I am glad I chose AA. Hope this helps!

Botswana Family Safari with Teenagers

Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire (with Materuni waterfalls, coffee tour) - 6 Days

The safari to Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater and Conservation Area was excellent. The guide, Lewis, was quite knowledgeable, the accommodation better than other camp sites, and the meals very delicious. It also helped that we saw all five of the Big 5! In addition, we saw baby elephants rolling about in the mud, a pack of spotted hyena dealing with a carcass, and a male and female lion attempting to mate. Lake Manyara was a little disappointing because the heavy rains had stirred up the mud in the water and discouraged the birds from feeding there. I also felt that the guide was not as informative as Lewis. The visit to Materuni Falls was good although very muddy because of the wet weather. The food was excellent and the coffee tour very lively and entertaining.

16 Days of Intensive Adventurous Safari through Magical Uganda and Rwanda ( Private tour)

At the beginning of December 2018 we decided to make an East-Africa-Trip and bought flight tickets to Entebbe via Addis Ababa and Zanzibar. We had the challenge to organize our trip to Ethiopia (7 days), Zanzibar (5 days) and to Uganda (16 days) in only 2 weeks before departure. Fortunately I discovered the website www.safaribookings.com which enabled us to get offers from three tour operators in Uganda whithin 24 hours. Thanks a lot for this really good service. Biggest thanks to Mukisa Safaris with Richard who made all our dreams come true. He fullfilled all our whishes and modificatiins in case of planning the 16-days-route and also to include a five-day-trek to the awesome Rwenzori Mountains. Every requests were answered promptly with good guidance. At the Entebbe-Airport we were really warm welcomed by our two guides Joane and John and all of the Mukisa-Members. Then we started directly our trip with our 4x4 Toyota Van across the country to Kidepo Valley NP, to Murchison Falls NP, to Rwenzori Mountains and finally via Queen Elizabeth NP to the unforgettable Bwindi Impenetrable NP. Thank Joan and John we had a lot of fun, learned a lot about nature, have seen all the great nature and animals and people, we felt very safe and had most of the time a good wlan-collection. :) The accomodations at lodges or tented lodges were clean, nice and comfortable, the meals also were fine and delicious. Uganda is characterized by a very big variety of beautiful landscapes, unbelievable nature and very friendly people. From the awesome Rwenzori Mountains, to the great Bwindi Rainforest, from animals at river Nile to remote Kidepo Valley. We loved it very much. 10 Days Uganda's Gorillas Encounter, Wildlife & Kigali City Tour ( Private tour)

It was a breathtaking trip. We enjoyed every moment. We slept in the most beautiful locations.The gorilla walk was very heavy but it was more than worth it (recommended!!!). We have had the time of our lives. The elderly enjoyed it just as much as the people in their twenties. It is a wonderful journey for everyone. This organization is professional and definitely recommended for your trip to Uganda and Rwanda. We enjoyed our vacation very hard and and we would like to thank Mukisa Safaris Uganda for this.

African Safari Tour Reviews

The tour was very well organized. Everything worked up quite well and everyone took good care of us. It was a magnificent time in Tanzania's wild nature. Also the tour company took care of all changes online (one day early arrival and extra shira tour booking) in a flexible and timely manner. Our Safari guide and driver Israel did really a great job. He worked hard to find all the animals for us as good as possible. This wasn't an easy job as we were there during rain season. He kept us safe and well informed all the time. We saw many wild animals such as cheetahs, lions, giraffes, buffalos, elephants, hippos, hyenas and of course tons of Gnus, zebras and all kinds of antilopes, monkeys and birds. We could even see some of the big five like the lion from eye to eye, roaming around less than 1m from our vehicle! Of course there's no guaranty of which wild animals you'll see as we're talking about natural parks, but you can rest assured the guides are doing their best to show you what nature is offering during your visit. All the staff in the hotels, parks and people in general were very kind and very welcoming! The food was always good and safe. FYI, the actual safari is 5 days + 2 days arrival and departure. Nevertheless within these 5 days we saw so many places and had a unique nature experience. "Luxury" as mentioned in the title is a bit too much said, especially when it comes to accommodation. On the other hand all the hotel names/ratings and the exact itinerary were mentioned clearly so no surprises. The luxurious part was actually that we were only on our own since it's low season :) Our guide Israel was flexible and fulfilled every possible wish we had. The Maasai village tour in the way to Serengeti costs an extra 50$ which is a fair price but they will also offer you some overpriced hand-made souvenirs to buy. The tour itself was very interesting and nice including a welcome song and dance basically from the whole village :) The Serengeti Safari lounge was quite spacious and had a big balcony to enjoy the endless view of the Serengeti. That was definitely the best accommodation of the trip. We woke up to a great show of a huge group of Gnus and Zebras directly in front of our balcony. The very ones who were singing for us all night :) Last but not least: if you're wondering about the prices even for a day tour, you should know that the park fees including conservation fees are quite high. So you're basically contributing to the well-being of these parks as well as the many wonderful people protecting them.

A bit late with the review... The trip was November 2019 and it was the best trip ever!!! Simon best guide, stunning places, welcoming locals and amazing experiences! the flight over the Okavango Delta is highly recommended.

Is african lion safari a part of the access 2 program.

Yes! Show your Access 2 card at the Admission gate, and receive 25% off regular gate admission. One support person will also receive 25% off their regular gate admission. Access 2 discounts are not available through online ticketing.

I’m a season pass holder, do I need to secure a time slot?

No – you are welcome to come any time between our hours of operation.

I’m a season pass holder, how do I access my digital pass?

On our homepage, select “Member Portal” in the top right hand corner and log-in.  Select “Digital Passes”.  We can scan directly from your mobile device, or you can print them off at home.

Can I upgrade my admission ticket to a season pass?

Yes!  This season, visitors are able to upgrade their one day admission tickets to a Season Passport on site at Safari Bazaar, located underneath Kenya Gate.  Please ensure you keep a copy of your receipt from admission.  Upgrade must be completed on the date of visit.  Only admission costs related to passport category purchased will be deducted.

Do I have to print my tickets?

Once you receive your admission e-tickets by e-mail, you can show it directly on your mobile device, with barcodes visible, or print it out and have it ready for us!

How does the timed ticketing work?

We kindly ask that visitors select a time for entry into the park as well as the drive through Game Reserves.  This helps us manage park capacity and traffic flow in the drive through Game Reserves.

Simply show your digital barcode at our Ticket Booth on your mobile device or printed off. Tickets are also available at the main gate.

Attractions

Will all of the animals be out in the game reserves.

Yes, however during cold periods some species may not be on display. African Lion Safari reserves the right to change animal displays without notice.

How long is the drive through the Game Reserves?

The 9 km of drive through Game Reserves takes approximately 1 hour to 1 hour and a half to enjoy!

Is the Safari Tour Bus available?

Yes, our Safari Tour Bus is available! Tickets can be purchased on site at African Lion Safari. Please note that masks/face coverings are not mandatory on the Safari Tour bus, but are encouraged.

Food & Drink

Are food and beverages available.

Yes!  Select food locations are open throughout the park. Please refer to the park map for seasonal locations.

What happens during inclement weather?

Some park features/tours/rides/presentations may close temporarily during severe weather conditions. As soon as conditions permit safe operation, these features will re-open.   No refunds or rain cheques provided due to inclement weather.

Do you have wheelchairs/wagons available for rent?

Yes, we have wheelchairs available to rent for $5.00 and wagons available to rent for $8 at our Safari Bazaar Gift Shop, located underneath Kenya Gate!  With each rental, a security deposit is applied, and refunded when the rental is returned.  All rentals will be cleaned and sanitized before each use.

Do you offer rain passes?

No, we do not offer rain passes or rain checks due to inclement weather.  African Lion Safari’s drive through Game Reserves operate rain or shine.

Why isn’t my credit card approved online?

Please ensure that all billing information is correct and accurately reflects the address that your issuing bank/credit card company has on file. Address verification requires an exact match and slight variations may result in a declined transaction.

Are food and beverage available?

What methods of payment does the park accept at retail and food service locations.

VISA, MasterCard, Interac and cash are accepted at all locations throughout the park. 

Will you have washrooms available?

Washroom facilities are available at Jungle Junction, Mombasa Market Restaurant, Misumu Bay Wetplay and at the end of Tusker Trail.

Can I bring my pet or service animal to African Lion Safari?

For the safety of our birds and animals, staff and other guests, pets are not permitted in our drive through Game Reserves or on African Lion Safari property.  We kindly ask visitors to leave all pets at home. Visitors who arrive with a pet will have to leave their animal in a shaded kennel.

Can I feed the animals?

No, each bird and animal at African Lion Safari receives a special diet that is prepared by our staff to meet their daily dietary needs. For the health and safety of our animals, we ask that you do not feed them. The consumption of human food can harm them.

Wake Up The Wild Refund, Cancellation, and Rescheduling Policies

• Wake Up The Wild tours are non-refundable, and non-transferable; however, if it becomes necessary to reschedule your tour for another date, you may do so by calling 72 hours before the tour.
• Rescheduling of tours will only be accommodated once and only rescheduled during the current operating season.

What if I miss my tour, can I take another tour that day?

There is only ONE tour departure offered daily. Please arrive at African Lion Safari at 8:45 a.m. SHARP. Unfortunately, those arriving late cannot be accommodated on another tour that day. This exclusive experience occurs rain or shine, with the exception of severe weather or lightning. What should I wear for Wake Up The Wild?

All participants must wear closed-toed shoes, no open – toed shoes are permitted.  Be prepared with a jacket for cooler mornings and rain coats for predicted rain days.  Ensure appropriate attire is worn for this outdoor, all-weather experience.

What time does it start and how long will it take?

This is an early morning tour.  Arrival time is 8:45 AM and the experience will be completed by 11:00 AM.  Plan to stay after and enjoy the rest of the park.

Who can experience Wake Up The Wild?

• Guests must be a minimum of 8 years of age to participate in this experience and must be accompanied by an adult. For safety reasons, children under 8 years of age are not permitted. Proof of I.D for children is required on the day of the tour.
• For guests own safety, they should be in good physical health, have full body control and hand-eye coordination.
• Guests must be able to walk independently, without walking aids or medical devices.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
