In each of the analyzed years, the Friday before July Fourth was the busiest travel day ahead of the Fourth of July weekend.

Are airports busy on July Fourth? The data shows the holiday is the least busy day to fly, with airport crowds averaging just 81% of what they are relative to the busiest travel day. The FAA's predictions show the same.

Based on recent historical trends, most people will kick off their Fourth of July weekend as early as possible, jetting off on the Friday before — or even ducking out of the workweek early by departing on the Thursday prior. Most travelers will likely maximize their weekends, waiting until the Sunday after the holiday to fly home.

But following typical July Fourth holiday travel patterns could mean costs in terms of airfare and time spent waiting in line at the airport. Deviate from that schedule to find lighter crowds and perhaps better July Fourth flight deals, too.

Try these travel days instead:

Embrace Saturday travel: Rather than rush out from work on Friday afternoon to jump on a flight, relax at home that evening and depart Saturday morning instead. Simply shifting your trip by one day could likely result in going from one of the busiest to lightest travel days of the July Fourth travel period.

The same goes for traveling back home. While it can be tempting to extend your trip as long as possible before work starts on Monday, skip the Sunday flight and fly home on Saturday instead. Bonus: You’ll give yourself a day at home to rest and recover before you hit the next workweek (how responsible of you).

Fly on July Fourth: If you don’t mind traveling on the holiday, you’re looking at the single emptiest air travel day of the period analyzed.

Do one better by flying out early on the holiday. Travel booking app Hopper’s spring 2023 Flight Disruption Outlook found that flights that depart from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. are half as likely to be delayed versus flights with scheduled departure times after 9 a.m.

Fly on July 5: Will July 5 be a busy travel day in 2024? Likely yes. This year, July 5 falls on a Friday, one of the most expensive days to fly year-round.

July Fourth travelers in 2024 should feel leery that their flight itinerary will cost them in terms of price and airport queue congestion.

While airports will be packed, the roads won't be much better. According to AAA 2023 projections, an estimated 43.2 million people will drive to their destinations, an increase of 2.4% over 2022 and 4% higher than 2019 — and thus setting a record for the number of Americans traveling by car for the holiday.

The uptick in drivers might have something to do with gas prices. For the 2023 holiday, the national average for a gallon of regular gas has been more than $1 less over the past couple months than what it was on July 4, 2022, according to AAA.

Over 3.5 million US travelers are set to fly over the upcoming holiday weekend as travel rebounds in the face of delays and disruptions.

Over 3.5 million passengers will take to the skies over the upcoming Fourth of July weekend in the United States. The Federal Holiday celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain on July 4th, 1776.

Today, the long weekend hosts an array of festive activities and is one of the busiest weekends to travel in the nation over the summer. It follows the Memorial Day long weekend at the end of May, which marks the beginning of the US summer season and saw 2,700 canceled and widespread disruptions across the country.

In the weeks since Memorial Day, over 21,000 flights have been canceled by US airlines, representing roughly 2.7% of the scheduled total flights during the period, almost double last year's rate. The recent Father's Day and Juneteenth holiday weekend also saw significant cancellations, with 6% and 5% of flights canceled on Thursday and Friday of that weekend, respectively.

Independence Day 2022 expectations

An estimated 3.5 million passengers will travel over the holiday weekend, making it the second busiest since the year 2000. Friday, July 1st is shaping up to be the busiest day for air travel during the holiday weekend of June 30th – July 4th, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA), with Monday, July 4th being the lightest.

This past Friday, June 24th, the US Transportation Security Administration ( TSA ) screened 2.45 million air passengers, its highest daily number since February 2020. The increased traffic was despite weather and staffing issues resulting in travel disruptions, yet remained below the 2.73 million fliers on the same day in 2019. Friday also saw 711 flights canceled and more than 6,000 delayed.

There is also an increasing demand for international flights over the Independence Day weekend. Up to 40% of all flight reservations during the holiday weekend will be to international destinations as US travelers seek to take advantage of pandemic-era restrictions ending overseas. The top global destination for the period is the city of London, which has seven airlines serving the New York City area alone this summer.

The entire industry also is hampered by severe staff shortages worldwide. The US is facing staff shortages, especially among pilots , and industrial action has continued throughout the year. This summer has also seen a lack of Air Traffic Controllers , a situation the FAA is actively looking to address but has had far-reaching ramifications.

What is being done this year?

The FAA has issued calls for airlines to meet customer expectations ahead of the long weekend. The United States Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, met with airline industry executives earlier this month and specifically urged them to focus on ensuring smooth operations over the upcoming holiday.

Major US airlines have withdrawn an estimated 15% of their schedules this summer compared to what was initially envisioned for June - August at the beginning of the year. Delta Air Lines announced it would be cutting roughly 100 flights a day between July 1st and August 7th, and JetBlue cut its summer flight schedules by close to 10%.

United Airlines announced it would cut 50 daily departures from its New York City hub at Newark Liberty International Airport , starting on July 1st. The airline's chief operations officer Jon Roitman said the temporary cuts should help address congestion and help minimize delays to improve on-time performance and will not affect any other United hubs. A spokesperson for the airline shared its travel predictions when reached for comment by Simple Flying:

"We anticipate the Fourth of July travel period to be amongst our busiest travel days of 2022 thus far."

"For the Fourth of July travel period, we anticipate nearly 5.2M customers will fly with United. This is more than a 24% increase from 2021 and about 92% of the customers we flew in 2019."

Fellow legacy carrier Delta Air Lines will significantly allow customers to change their flights for free and waive any resulting difference in fare over the holiday weekend. The systemwide fare difference travel waiver covers travel booked for July 1-4 and allows customers to rebook their trip before or after potentially challenging weekend travel days.

Delta expects to carry more customers from Friday, July 1st, through Monday, July 4th, than it has since before the pandemic. The SkyTeam carrier has confirmed it will not charge any fare difference or change fees, even on Basic Economy fares, as long as customers travel between the same origin and destination.

All customers whose tickets were issued on or before Tuesday, June 28th, 2022, are eligible, and rebooked travel must take place by July 8th, 2022.

When contacted by Simple Flying, a spokesperson for Southwest Airlines confirmed the airline, which does not charge a change or cancelation fee, had not issued any fare-difference waivers for this weekend but noted the airline's cancellation rate is among the lowest of ranked carriers. The airline has hired more than 14,500 Employees in the past 12 months to support operations and is on track to hire more than 10,000 Southwest Employees in 2022.

When asked how the airline was planning to cope with increased demand, a representative for Alaska Airlines highlighted the carrier's low cancelation rate, even as the company prepares to cope with a decreased workforce due to staff sickness:

"We’ve pulled every lever in our control to increase our stability this summer, resulting in a strong June in which we completed over 99% of our flights. This reliability came from the combination of proactively trimming our summer schedule earlier this spring and hiring and training thousands of new frontline employees."

"Like the communities in which we live and serve, we continue to experience positive COVID cases among our employees, which adds some uncertainty to our staffing levels beyond what we can always plan for."

Mounting Flight Delays. Stranded Fliers. Airlines Struggle With Surging July 4 Demand.

Carriers were dealing with a combination of staff shortages and passenger volume that approached or in some cases exceeded prepandemic levels.

Air passengers across the United States faced extensive flight cancellations and delays this weekend, caused by a boom in travel demand coupled with widespread staffing shortages.

From Friday through Sunday, airlines that fly within, into, or out of the United States canceled more than 1,400 flights, according to FlightAware, a flight-tracking website, stranding and angering some passengers headed for long-awaited summer vacations. In addition, more than 14,000 flights were delayed this holiday weekend, according to the site’s data.

Some airlines seemed to be struggling to handle passenger volume that approached or in some cases even exceeded prepandemic levels. On Friday, the Transportation Safety Administration screened more passengers — 2.49 million people — than on any other day this year. That surpassed the 2.18 travelers screened on July 1, 2019, before the pandemic.

The experience was frustrating for some passengers on U.S. carriers. On Saturday, 1,048 — or 29 percent — of Southwest Airlines flights were delayed, as were 28 percent of American Airlines flights, according to FlightAware. United Airlines and Delta Air Lines had similar problems, with 21 percent and 19 percent of their flights also delayed. On Sunday, the middle of the holiday weekend, travelers seemed to be getting a respite from the worst of the problems.

“Obviously, if it’s your flight that is delayed or canceled, it’s a disaster,” said Robert W. Mann Jr. , a former airline executive who now runs the airline consultancy R.W. Mann & Company.

In a typical month, Mr. Mann noted, about 20 percent of flights are delayed or canceled. But this holiday weekend, he said, it was about 30 percent — a 50 percent increase. “It’s a little bit worse than usual,” he said.

Adding to the pressure on air carriers this weekend was a glitch in the pilot-scheduling system at American Airlines that enabled pilots to drop thousands of flight assignments for July. The airline said on Saturday that it did not anticipate any “operational impact” because of the glitch.

But the Allied Pilots Association , the union for American Airlines pilots, said that the airline had unilaterally reinstated the dropped trips without the agreement of the pilots. The union said it was pressing the airline to pay an “inconvenience premium” to pilots affected by the scheduling system problems.

In a nod to mounting passenger frustrations this summer, Ed Bastian, the chief executive of Delta Air Lines, issued an apology last week.

“I know many of you may have experienced disruptions, sometimes significant, in your travels as we build our operation back from the depths of 2020 while accommodating a record level of demand,” Mr. Bastian wrote in a post on LinkedIn . He added: “Though the majority of our flights continue to operate on time, this level of disruption and uncertainty is unacceptable.”

In an email, Morgan Durrant, a spokesman for Delta, said the airline was managing “the compounding factors” of bad weather and air traffic control delays, which affect the availability of flight crews. The airline was “working around the clock to make Delta’s operation as resilient as possible to minimize the ripple effect of disruptions,” Mr. Durrant said. “Even so, some operational challenges are expected this holiday weekend.”

As the holiday weekend progressed, however, the spate of flight problems began to abate. By Sunday evening, Delta had canceled just 1 percent of its flights, and just 15 percent of Southwest Airlines flights had been delayed, according to FlightAware.

Southwest said on Sunday that it was delivering “a safe, reliable experience across our network today with currently, less than 10 total cancellations” for the day.

American Airlines and United Airlines did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment.

Thousands of flights delayed and canceled on busy July Fourth travel weekend

Travelers are returning to airports in record pre-pandemic numbers this July Fourth holiday weekend but continue to face thousands of flight delays and cancellations, data shows.

The Transportation Security Administration screened 2,490,490 passengers at airport security checkpoints Friday — the most since Feb. 11, 2020, when it screened more than 2.5 million passengers, agency spokesperson Lisa Farbstein tweeted Saturday .

The same day, 464 U.S. domestic and international flights were canceled and more than 6,600 were delayed, according to the flight tracker FlightAware , which noted that they were 28.8% of scheduled flights overall.

More than 930 flights within, into or out of the U.S. were delayed Sunday morning, and more than 200 were canceled, according to FlightAware . New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Chicago O'Hare International Airport had the highest rates of delays and cancellations.

Fifty-three flights within into, or out of the U.S. had already been canceled for the Fourth of July as of Sunday morning, according to FlightAware.

Sunday's cancellations followed Saturday's 5,893 delays and 655 cancellations within, into or out of the U.S.

The July Fourth weekend flight cancellations and delays also follow those of Juneteenth and Father's Day weekend , which included the busiest air travel day of the year before Friday and had more than 3,300 flight cancellations from Friday to Monday, and Memorial Day weekend, when about 2,700 flights were canceled.

Staffing shortages, and a pilot shortage in particular , have led some airlines to pre-emptively cut thousands of flights for the summer season.

Airline executives have blamed understaffing at the Federal Aviation Administration for flight cancellations and delays. The FAA disputed the claim in a statement.

In an interview last month with The Associated Press, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said he wanted to wait to see how air travel over the July Fourth weekend and the rest of the summer went before he determines whether his department will take enforcement action against airlines.

Buttigieg tweeted Saturday that passengers can claim refunds for canceled flights, noting in a thread that his own connecting flight was canceled Friday night and that he claimed a $112 refund.

"Airlines offer miles as compensation for some travel issues, and you can often negotiate on this. That’s between you and the airline," Buttigieg tweeted . "But you are entitled to cash refunds for canceled flights — that’s a requirement that we will continue to enforce."

FlightAware spokeswoman Kathleen Bangs has said she expects the wave of cancellations to stabilize by the fall as airlines reduce their schedules and aim to hire more pilots and other airline workers.

With Fourth of July travel days away, US airports already setting pandemic records

For the second time in three days, U.S. airports set a pandemic record for crowds amid a travel rush not seen in years. Not to mention, there are still days to go before Fourth of July holiday travel gets into full swing. Agents at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints screened 2,462,097 passengers Sunday — eclipsing the mark set two days earlier, on Friday — making it the single busiest travel day since February of 2020.

While Friday and Sunday certainly stood out for the record-setting nature of the passenger traffic, those days are part of a distinct trend. Nine of the ten busiest days for air travel passenger volume since March 2020 have come in the last month — and the majority of those days fell in the last week or two. It's a surge we've been anticipating for months, as part of a summer travel season unlike any in recent years.

Unfortunately, this weekend (and the early part of the week) has been a reminder of the current air travel landscape. Major airlines canceled hundreds of flights over the weekend. Delta Air Lines led the pack with more than 200 cancellations Saturday and Sunday, and the disruptions lingered into the early part of the week. By mid-morning Monday, Delta had canceled another 200 flights for the day, around 6% of its schedule.

Southwest Airlines , United Airlines and American Airlines each had single days with 100 or more cancellations between Sunday and Monday, according to data from FlightAware .

Delta's Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) hub saw the most flights canceled over the weekend, though no single airport experienced disruptions of the scope seen last week at places like New York City 's LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). By mid-morning Sunday, the airline had canceled close to 200 more flights.

In past weeks when Delta canceled flights , the carrier pointed to a combination of staffing, weather and air traffic control challenges.

It's shaping up to be a busier holiday weekend for travel than any in the last two and a half years, and there are surely future travelers eyeing the recent disruptions and wondering how to best prepare.

More pandemic air travel records could fall

AAA projects more than 3.5 million travelers will fly during the upcoming holiday weekend, between Thursday and Monday.

Despite the large crowds, AAA predicts air travel will actually — by a slim margin — make up the smallest share of overall Fourth of July travel in more than a decade, and suggests passenger concern about airline operational issues could be a factor. It also means millions of travelers are driving, despite the continued impact of high gas prices.

Even still, it's likely the crowds will top even the busiest days seen in the past week. Travel booking site Hopper, which analyzes airfare, calls the upcoming holiday weekend the "busiest and most expensive travel weekend in years"; the company blames both the anticipated crowds and the fact that the average airfare for the holiday travel period ($437 for a domestic round-trip flight) is up 45% compared to 2019 prices.

The busiest travel days surrounding Memorial Day weekend were the Thursday and Friday prior to the holiday, TPG reported in late May. Keep this in mind if you're planning to travel this weekend — it's a relevant comparison since July 4th falls on a Monday this year.

Airlines turn attention to FAA

As the holiday weekend approaches, airlines are calling on the Federal Aviation Administration to ensure sufficient staffing at its most critical facilities. After airline executives met with U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg a week prior, Airlines for America, the trade group for the nation's largest carriers, sent Buttigieg a letter Friday; the letter argues that understaffing at FAA facilities — particularly in Jacksonville, Florida — has been "crippling" East Coast operations. Solving air traffic delays has been the subject of much discussion in recent months.

The organization pointed to efforts by airlines in recent weeks to do "everything within their power to deliver a safe and on-time product" during the Fourth of July weekend and the remainder of the summer. This includes cutting 15% of flights through August and taking steps to make it easier for passengers to make itinerary changes using airline mobile apps.

The FAA responded to Friday's letter with a statement suggesting U.S. taxpayers deserve to have their expectations met when they buy plane tickets since airlines received tens of billions in pandemic relief, the Associated Press reports.

Preparing for the unexpected

There are things you can do now to prepare for the unexpected if you have already booked travel for next weekend.

1. Reserve your airport parking spot in advance

A trend we've seen this year – especially in recent weeks – is how quickly airport parking lots can fill up.

Many airports have reservation systems that allow you to book your parking spot in advance. This can be a good way to ensure you don't have to spend precious pre-flight time searching for a place to park and to know exactly how much you'll pay for parking.

2. Consider packing light so you don't have to check a bag

There are a number of reasons you might want to stick to carry-on luggage, including avoiding long checked bag lines at the airport. It can also help ensure your luggage arrives with you at your destination in the event your itinerary changes.

Perhaps most importantly right now, it means you'll have your belongings with you if a leg of your trip gets canceled and you end up having to spend the night in a connecting city like I had to on my last trip. The big caveat, of course, is that you'll have to make sure everything in your bag adheres to TSA restrictions. You'll also want to double-check whether your ticket allows for a complimentary full-sized carry-on bag.

3. Download the airline's app and learn how to navigate it

As I discussed in my account of my travel woes last week, your airline's app is often your best bet to get your trip back on track when things go awry. It can offer you easy ways to rebook your canceled or delayed flight with just a few clicks. That's not to say it will always offer an easy solution. When mass disruptions happen, finding available seats on flights can be a real problem. However, in a lot of cases, using the app is a much easier and quicker alternative to waiting in line or on hold.

4. Familiarize yourself with protections offered by your credit card or insurance plan

Did you buy travel insurance for your trip ? Does one of your travel credit cards offer you reimbursement for expenses incurred due to trip disruption? It could be worth taking a few minutes in advance to learn your benefits so that – in the event you need them – you're not trying to figure out what's covered and what's not in the midst of a stressful situation.

5. Think about where you'll eat and drink along the way

Although most airport food locations have reopened, there's still a good chance you could run into long lines at coffee spots or other popular concessionaires, as many try to handle heavy customer traffic without full staffing. Some airline and airport apps offer food-on-the-go options while certain food and beverage places – like airport Starbucks locations, for instance – offer mobile ordering options that can help you jump otherwise lengthy lines.

Looking ahead to the next holiday weekend

Did you miss out on planning a trip for Memorial Day or the Fourth of July? The next long holiday weekend, of course, is Labor Day.

We've seen plenty of examples of prices dropping just after that holiday marks the unofficial end to summer. So, you might want to wait until then to save money (and possibly aggravation at the airport) by planning an end-of-season getaway.

If you're planning to fly that holiday weekend, Hopper says Saturday is generally your best bet for a departure day when it comes to getting a deal for a long weekend getaway. The site noted that when it came to Fourth of July weekend travel, most people booked their flights five to six weeks in advance – in late May or early June. So, if you haven't already booked something, now is a good time to look.

As you can read in this post about the best times to book cheap airfare in 2022 , that window – several weeks out – is when airlines begin to actively manage their flights, leading to greater fluctuations in prices, experts say.

Despite the recent challenges, the latest passenger traffic numbers are a reminder that airport crowds aren't going away this summer, particularly not as the holiday weekend gets closer.

All the apps and advanced planning in the world can't remove the sting of frustration most travelers feel when their itinerary gets severely upended. That said, it may be worth heading into your trip prepared as these disruptions could happen along the way.

The quietest days to travel by car are anticipated to be Sunday, July 2, and Monday, July 3, according to transportation analytics company INRIX.

If you're heading for the highway on Friday, June 30, the worst traffic is forecast to be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to INRIX.

If you're driving home on Wednesday, July 5, the worst traffic may hit from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Rental cars are averaging $47 per day, down 25% from the same time last year, according to Hopper.

More than 24 million are expected to fly out of U.S. airports from June 29 to July 5, with June 29 and June 30 expected to be the busiest travel days, according to Hopper.

But flight prices are dropping. Hopper said domestic tickets are more than $100 cheaper than they were last year.

American Airlines said it expects to fly nearly 3 million passengers from June 30 to July 4, with July 2 as its busiest day.

Record-Breaking Travel Volumes Expected July 4th Weekend

WASHINGTON, DC (June 26, 2023) – AAA projects 50.7 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this Independence Day weekend*, setting a new record for the holiday. Domestic travel over the long weekend will increase by 2.1 million people compared to 2022. This year’s projection surpasses the previous July 4 th weekend record set in 2019 of 49 million travelers.

“We’ve never projected travel numbers this high for Independence Day weekend,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “What this tells us is that despite inventory being limited and some prices 50% higher, consumers are not cutting back on travel this summer. Many of them heeded our advice and booked early, another sign of strong travel demand.”

This July 4 th weekend is expected to set a new record for the number of Americans traveling by car for the holiday. AAA expects 43.2 million people will drive to their destinations, an increase of 2.4% over 2022 and 4% higher than 2019. This summer, gas prices are well below what they were one year ago. The national average for a gallon of regular was $4.80 on July 4 th , 2022. Gas prices have remained steady the past couple of months, with the national average hovering around $3.50 to $3.60 a gallon, thanks to the lower cost of oil.

Air travel is also expected to set a new record. AAA projects 4.17 million Americans will fly to their destinations Independence Day weekend, an increase of 11.2% over 2022 and 6.6% over 2019. The previous July 4 th weekend air travel record of 3.91 million travelers was set in 2019. The share of air travelers in the overall holiday forecast this year is an impressive 8.2% – the highest percentage in nearly 20 years.

Other modes of transportation are also on the rise this year. AAA expects 3.36 million people will travel by bus, cruise, or train over the long weekend, an increase of 24% over last year. While more travelers are turning to these modes this year, the number is not expected to surpass 2019’s total of 3.54 million.

INRIX, a provider of transportation data and insights, expects Friday, June 30 to be the busiest day on the roads during the Independence Day holiday weekend, with average travel times up nearly 30% over normal. Major metros like Boston, Seattle, and Washington, DC are expected to see the worst traffic. INRIX recommends leaving in the morning or after 6 p.m. to avoid the heaviest holiday congestion.

“With record-breaking travelers expected on the road this holiday weekend, drivers should prepare for above-average delays to their favorite destinations,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “Using traffic apps, local DOT notifications, and 511 services are key to minimizing holiday travel traffic frustrations this Independence Day.”

Travel demand has been steadily increasing since 2020, and this summer is poised to be one for the record books. Here are some trends and tips from AAA Travel.

Demand for first, business, and premium economy class seating has driven airlines to innovate and refresh their top-of-the-line products, with several carriers introducing new first class seats and suites.

Air France’s La Première

While the cabin is not available yet, Air France has promised that it will be during the upcoming winter season, which starts in October 2024. The carrier announced that it was redesigning its La Premiere cabin, exclusively deployed on its 777-300ERs, in May 2022.

At the time, Air France said that La Premiere would be the longest on the market, offering up to three modular configurations that can be fully privatized, including transforming the seat into a sofa or a bed. Furthermore, the carrier promised that it would appear on more aircraft than previously.

Benjamin Smith, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Air France, said that La Premiere represents the best of French excellence and is a vital part of the airline’s DNA. The executive noted that even at the peak of the pandemic, the airline saw the importance of a first class cabin, especially on routes across the Atlantic Ocean.

While Lufthansa teased the new designs of its first class cabins in October 2022, the German airline officially introduced the new Allegris cabins, including new first class seats, in February 2023. The seats will feature on Airbus A350, Boeing 787, and 777X aircraft, upon their delivery to the German airline.

At the time, Lufthansa said the new Allegris seats would be introduced with its latest Airbus A350-900 aircraft in 2024. However, two of its most recent Airbus A350-900 aircraft were straight sent to the desert, reportedly because supply chain issues derailed the airline’s plans to introduce the new cabins on the two aircraft, which is why they are now parked at Teruel Airport (TEV), Spain.

Nevertheless, while they might be delayed, the first class cabins will still have plenty on offer, including unprecedented privacy for the German airline’s top-of-the-line seats. For example, Lufthansa said that customers can warm or cool their seats in the suite according to their needs.

The one new development with the self-advertised three-room suite in the sky is that starting April 2024, the airline will deploy its Airbus A380 aircraft to fly between Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport (AUH) and New York John F.
